Annual Report

The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Hawaii is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
The after-school hours have become a critical time for youth – a time when many children in our communities are left to fend for themselves without positive adult supervision. We provide a safe place filled with hope and opportunity, ongoing relationships with caring adult mentors, and enriching programs.
Our vision is to provide a world class Club-Experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future and demonstrating good character and citizenship while living a healthy lifestyle.
As I look back at the past year’s heartaches and challenges, I also find joy and inspiration through the incredible resiliency and commitment in our communities. Because of Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii’s amazing community of supporters, we were able to keep ALL of our clubhouses open on O’ahu and Kaua’i, serving in person programs to over 3,000 children and connecting over 22,000 youth to virtual programming. We distributed over 42,000 meals, 30,000 pounds of groceries, 50,000 pieces of clothing, and thousands of PPE, school supplies and backpacks.
In a time when many organizations had to cut services, Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii doubled our operating hours, opening our Club doors as virtual learning centers for children and teens where they could access WiFi, technology and adult mentors to help them navigate their online lessons through school. On average, our Clubs opened 41 hours per week as we transitioned from “after school” to “out of school”, all the while continuing to provide a safe place, trained and caring youth development professionals and quality youth programs.
2021 presents even bigger challenges as we continue to battle learning loss, mental health issues and hunger and food insecurity with our children. But, because of you, we will be here for our youth! Our clubs are open, ready and fully staffed as we still have not laid off or furloughed any of our nearly 100 employees due to Covid-19. And when the economy is ready to open back up again, we will be here for the parents as they head back to work.
With you, our amazing communities by our side, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. Together, we will ensure our children have GREAT futures!
With much gratitude and Aloha,
Within a matter of one week of the COVID-19 lockdown, our Clubhouses mobilized and developed rich virtual programming for youth to connect with our skilled and caring staff. Members were able to experience live & pre-recorded programming including sports & fitness, crafts, dance, trivia, and leadership development.
When distance learning became an everyday reality for our families, Clubhouses opened their doors to provide a safe place for kids to learn remotely while their parents were at work. Additional tutoring and math classes were added to support students who had fallen behind.
“I have been able to depend on the Boys & Girls Club to provide the support that I need while I work, watching the children for a very minimal cost, but also to really have genuine love and concern for each child individually. To spend time with them, support their hobbies, build their confidence, and make them feel good about life in general. When everyone was shut down, they found ways to provide safe care during the coronavirus and make sure the kids were not being left at home all by themselves. Every day the staff have a smile for the kids, teaching them crafts, gardening, life lessons and checking in with them emotionally, sharing their own life experience, giving hope to tour kids. They feel safe and cared for when they are at the clubhouse. The heartbeat of this organization is Love and I am very thankful for it.”
BGCH collaborated with community distribution centers, giving out food families within the community.

Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program for Club teens. The National Youth of the Year title is the highest honor a Club member can receive, representing the voice of four million Club youth. The Youth of the Year program has recognized young people for their outstanding leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle. Over the decades, these individuals have exemplified the Boys & Girls Club mission and are proof to the impact Clubs make in transforming and saving kids’ lives. National Youth of the Year winners have achieved success in a variety of industries, including entertainment, politics, business and sports. &
Three outstanding youth have been named Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii 2020 Youth of the Year Finalists at a competition held on February 8, 2020. Selected from several exemplary Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii youth on Oahu and Kauai, these finalists, represented their local Boys & Girls Clubhouse at a special breakfast celebration. Guests attending the special event had the opportunity to hear the finalists’ inspiring stories at Aulani-A Disney Resort & Spa where the winner was announced by Mickey Mouse and Heisman Trophy Winner and NFL Quarterback, Marcus Mariota.
Do what makes your heart happy.”

Mahalo for the kindness & aloha of these amazing individual donors and organizations! Their support for our 2020 Virtual Walk in the Country fundraiser ensures Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii continues to support our youth and families within the communities we serve.
Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii’s 24th Annual Walk in the Country auction and dinner was re-imagined for 2020. Boys & Girls Clubs of Hawaii (BGCH) annual in-person fundraising event is normally held at the scenic Lanikūhonua in Ko Olina and welcomes 600-800 donors and guests. This year, BGCH included local restaurants across Hawaii for a new way of being together while still supporting the youth of Hawaii.

Walk in the Country is BGCH’s largest annual event of the year raising critical operational funds which keep BGCH Clubhouses running. BGCH partnered with local restaurants to create a memorable evening at a date convenient for donors. The intimate dining experience adhered to social distancing guidelines with a table set for six where guests were served a 4 course meal (Chef special menu). Furthermore, BGCH hosted an online silent auction, with early access for sponsors. The auction had an array of experiences and beautiful, unique pieces from local artists and businesses as well as our one-of-a-kind online wine auction. One of the featured items was a live virtual concert by world famous master on the ukulele, Jake Shimabukuro (pictured).

The Hale Pono Golf Tournament was reimagined in 2020. We wanted our supporters to enjoy what they love and safely. Our partners at Prince Golf Course and the Hale Pono Club came up with an idea that would support our efforts, and our golfers loved it! Instead of the traditional one-day golf event we were able to secure several days on the course where teams could choose when to golf. When they were done, they picked up lunch on us at the course! After all teams golfed, we gathered their score cards. This was the best part because rather than being on the course together and knowing how everyone had done, it was blinded which created a sense of competitiveness. 2 weeks after we had a virtual event to announce the winner and do giveaways.
On March 7, 2020-just days before Hawaii’s governor issued statewide stay-athome orders-the Windward Clubhouse hosted its 7th annual Kanikapila Under the Koolau Stars. Sponsored by Kamehameha Schools, the event drew over 200 supporters to Mid-Pacific Country Club in Kailua for an evening of community, song and fantastic food in support of Windward kids. Guests dined on delicious dishes by popular eateries Baci Bistro, Buzz’s Original Steak House, Easy ‘Que, Kalapawai Café, and Nico’s Kailua-each of which graciously donated their goods and services. Na Hoku Hanohano award winning singer-songwriter Brother Noland and his band wowed the crowd, just as they have Windward Clubhouse keiki through workshops and appearances over the years. All told, the event raised $27,100 for the Clubhouse’s spring, summer and fall school break programs, which have grown increasingly popular with Windward families in search of an affordable place for their kids to take part in a variety of sports, arts, music and leadership activities.
Hawaii Youth Symphony is deeply grateful for its partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii. Our organizations share a kindred spirit, and a mutual commitment to inspiring young people to reach their fullest potential. Together through our collaboration in the Clubhouse, we have been fostering a love of music in young students for over a decade. Playing music and learning an instrument are among the srest ways to build friendships, self-confidence, and strong character. At HYS, we believe music should be a right for every child—and the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii has cultivated an accessible and inclusive learning environment for all children, where opportunity, kindness and a sense of community thrives.
Much aloha to our friends at BGCH for all they do to support Great Futures for Hawaii’s youth.”

“Being a corporate board member is extra special to me because I am a former club kid (Spalding Clubhouse in early 80’s). I could not pass on the opportunity to give back to the organization that played such a large part my development as a person. My volunteerism was intended to be my opportunity to “pay it forward” and create opportunities for the next generation of club kids. As much as I would to feel like I am giving, the truth is I continue to benefit from my involvement with BGCH through the teamwork of the board volunteers, administration, club leaders and club kids. Being a corporate board member was one of the best decisions of my life.”
-John Katahira, Corporate Board“Being part of the Boys and Girls Club of Hawai’i has been a key part of my life and that of our family’s life for well over 30 years. BGCH is 45 years old and the largest youth services organization in Hawai’i. Being a “club kid” is a game changer in so many ways. We now serve over 14,000 kids on two islands. Denzel Washington is our national spokesperson and represents us well. “Great Futures Start Here” is a reality when you walk through our doors as Denzel says. Club kids now are in the civilian, government and military work force. Many continue to give back by volunteering. Several serve or served on our corporate and alliance boards. Visit any club any time and check us out. Safety, fun and ethical belonging are central to us. Our club keeps kids on the basketball court, not the juvenile court. Come on by!” -Mike Town, Corporate Board

Darci Yakimura – Corporate Board
Being a board member with BGCH for the past eight years, in short, has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my professional career. BGCH is an amazing organization that positively impacts the lives of so many, providing a safe and supportive environment, and after-school programs that help foster the development of our youth. It truly has been a meaningful experience to be able to serve and contribute to BGCH and its mission. Serving on this board has also allowed me to collaborate with other purposeful, compassionate, and driven leaders in various industries. Nothing compares to the feeling of knowing that we are collectively making a difference in our community. I am beyond grateful to be a part of a dedicated group of corporate board members, alliance members, BGCH staff, and volunteers.”
-Donna Yano, Corporate Board
Thousands of people, businesses, volunteers, and foundations make our work possible. Although it would be impossible to list them all in this report, we would like to acknowledge our top financial donors who made a true impact this year in the lives of our youth. This list does not contain auction purchases.
When the oil from the kukui nut is lit, it provides a source of light. This light symbolizes the potential of each of our youth.
