MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Aloha mai!

When I reflect back on 2019 and the things I am most grateful for and at the top of my list is you, our donors and supporters. This year has been one of the most interesting and educational years of my life and I sincerely thank you for your support and encouragement as I took the helm for the first time as CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii.

Because of support from caring members of our community like you, in 2019 Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii was able to:

Provide Thousands of Youth a Safe Place to Go: In 2019, Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii served 4,213 members through our Clubhouses on Oahu and Kauai, 40% of whom were teens and 83% from underserved communities. We also connected with 11,623 more youth through our outreach programs and services.

Expand Our Reach: Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii opened a beautiful Dream Court at our Waianae Clubhouse in April and a new teen center in Lihue, Kauai, in May! Our partnership with the Hawaii Youth Symphony Orchestra grew as we successfully added Nanakuli Clubhouse to the program. Education, the Arts, Sports & Recreation, Health & Wellness, Career Development, and Character & Leadership continue to be the foundation of all our youth programs!

Build Great Futures: 100% of Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii LIT teen seniors graduated from high school; 75% of those are enrolled in post-secondary education and 13% are serving in the military.

Give Back: Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii youth members contributed more than 5,000 volunteer hours and completed more than 30 youth-led service projects.

Feed the Community: Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii provided over 30,000 meals and 80,000 snacks to youth members and distributed nearly 50,000 pounds of food to the communities we serve.

All of these wonderful things wouldn’t have happened without you!

Mahalo nui for all you do!

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Spalding Biddy Program

Being a part of the Biddy team for two years has prepared me for high school sports by showing me the importance of being consistent and discipline. The team taught me to be a leader and now I’m more confident and outgoing

Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii partners annually with the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica for the Biddy Basketball Tournament made possible by the Pacific Youth Foundation. The Charles C. Spalding Honolulu Clubhouse created a team of eight players where they participated in outside leagues to prepare them to head to California. On April 4, 2019, the Spalding team landed in Los Angeles California where they stayed at the Santa Monica Clubhouse. For most of the players, it was the first time they had visited the mainland and, for some, the first time on an airplane. The team participated in the two day Santa Monica Biddy Basketball Tournament where they finished in 3rd place with Spalding Club member Clayton M. being chosen for the All-Tournament Team.

.”

Windward Clubhouse Music & Videog raphy Program

The Windward Clubhouse opened a state-of-the-art recording studio in 2018, thanks to a grant from the Zilber Family Foundation which funded a recording studio and equipment.

It began with a question: “Can we make a music video?” Which led to sharing ideas for such a project, to selecting a song to record, creating a storyline, and scouting locations to shoot the video. Staff and members learning together in real time. Meeting new people. Learning how to work together: Vocalist. Musicians. Videographers. Sound engineer. Sharing the experience of music with other people. Learning a few basic keys. Learning to stay in time. Seeing how scenes come together. The Club spent the 2018-19 school year learning how to use the instruments and equipment, and premiered their first cover music video, “RIPTIDE”, to family and friends in May 22, 2019. Windward Clubhouse members learned a lot in the process and our amazing staff coached them each step of the way!

Lihue Clubhouse Teen Center

Received Pure Gold Donation & Expansion of Facilit y

In Spring 2019, Boys & Girls Club Lihue clubhouse received a donation from Pure Good, the foundation for Pure Storage. Pure Storage employees generously contributed more than $200,000, which helped expand the existing facility and allow the Club the ability to offer new programs. The financial gesture was followed by a work day, where Pure Storage employees, top performers in the company, were treated to a vacation to celebrate their success. About 200 people, including Boys & Girls Club staff and board members, and Kauai Habitat for Humanity volunteers joined in the work day. Volunteers painted the new teen center, worked on picnic tables, furniture and beautified the facility

The Nanakuli Teen CenterA’all’i Program

Our young people, especially between their junior and senior year of high school, struggle to really identify who they are, what they want to become, and what makes them really happy. They struggle just waking up every morning due to negativity all around from home, peers, school or even themselves that priorities interchange and they begin to think no one understands or society already has a negative label on them. All they really need is positive support, guidance, and consistency.

The Nanakuli Teen Center- A’ali’i Program is a program to help decrease school absenteeism and to progress teens to the next grade level by integrating 3 goals of services to promote attendance, attachment, and achievement. There are several components like the Why Try resilience curriculum, academic instruction, and project based cultural activities. In 2019, the Club had 14 students enrolled in the program, of the 14 only 10 were able to complete the program from start to finish. All 10 have achieved grade progression and about 50% of them decreased in school absenteeism. We also had a teen from this group become a candidate in the 2019 Youth of the Year program.

ANNUAL SIGNATURE EVENTS

Youth of the Year

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been BGCA’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members. Each year, one exceptional young person from a Boys & Girls Club is selected to be the National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year serves as both an exemplary ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth, and as a strong voice for all of our nation’s young people.

Outstanding youth were selected from across BGCH Clubhouses as Youth of theYear

Finalists at a competition held in February 2019. Finalists represented their Clubs at a YOY Celebration event on March 3rd at the Honolulu Country Club. Guests attending the special event had the opportunity to hear the finalists’ inspiring stories. The 2019 finalists were Keikelani H., Alyana-Marie C., and Evlyn R. from the Hale Pono Ewa Beach Club; Anissa O. from the Spalding Honolulu Clubhous; Lei-Shell K. and Loleina K. from the Waianae Club; Darius A. and Devaughn R. from the Nanakuli Club; and Jessica-Ann H., Bryden K., and Kody K. from Lihue. The 2019 YOY Winner was Anissa O. from the Charles C. Spalding Clubhouse.

Silence is a challenge that is holding back our youth. We need to speak up, take a stand for our future, and make a change in our world.
Anissa O. 2019 Youth of the Year Winner

Great Futures Day

Great Futures Day is a day of advocacy and a day where the community comes together to show that EVERY CHILD deserves a great future. Each year, Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii serves more than 14,000 kids each year at 9 clubhouses on O’ahu and Kaua’i.

The annual Great Futures Day took place on May 22, 2019. For the entire day, Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii and its supporters embarked on a full day dedicated to our keiki, aiming to generate donations from family and friends across the state. This annual peer to peer fundraising event is a powerful grassroots effort that reinforces the direct impact that Clubhouses have within the communities we serve for the youth that we serve.

Boys & Girls Club Hawaii provides guidance-oriented character development programs for local youth, inspiring them to become responsible citizens with programs that support academic success, healthy lifestyles, and good character and citizenship. Through its Clubhouses and the positive, productive work Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii does, the organization is able to change children’s lives and help reverse the most negative trends facing youth and the state, including graduation rates, obesity and violence.

Annual Walk in the Country

Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii’s 23rd Annual Walk in the Country is a premiere event that took place on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the magical Lanikūhonua in Ko Olina and was sponsored by Star-Advertiser and Ko Olina. This annual event was a beautiful evening filled with delicious food, refreshing drinks, amazing auction items and, best of all, the wonderful company of over 600 people gathered together for a common purpose – ensuring our kids have a GREAT FUTURE!

Our deep gratitude and humble thanks to all who supported this wonderful event. The collective efforts of our guests, donors, vendors, partners, volunteers and staff, helped to raise well over $500,000 in support of our programs.
