FROM THE HEADMASTER Tonight you will experience a showcase of hard work and talent as our students perform for their families, friends and the wider community. Our music students have a range of skill levels and musical aspirations, but the thing that they collectively share is expert guidance from our highly qualified and passionate Music staff, who strive to develop in every child a deep love of music in all its forms. Experiential learning is key to providing the tangible improvement in the craft of making music that every music student at Girton benefits from, with 30 instrumental and vocal ensemble groups practising and performing together regularly. Combined with over 650 instrumental and vocal lessons conducted each week at the school, we have one of the largest and finest regional music programs in the country. The Music Department at Girton provides a three-pronged approach to music that involves individual tuition, ensemble participation and classroom education. It is the ensemble performances, like those you will see tonight, from which memories are made. Students make friends, share the joy of making music together and learn from one another. Performing in an ensemble teaches students to learn to listen and to communicate non-verbally with each other to create music as a team, and this is where the reward and the magic happens. The musicians on stage tonight understand that the joy of learning is in giving back what they have learned to their friends, their family, their teachers and their community. On behalf of the performers tonight, I thank all those who have supported children in their musical pursuits and hope that you enjoy the creative self-expression of our wonderful music students.

FROM THE HEAD OF MUSIC Welcome to the Girton Grammar School Senior School Ensembles Concert. The musicians have been preparing for this event for an extended period and are all very excited to share their music with you this evening. Music is the art of arranging sounds in time to produce a continuous, integrated, evocative musical composition, using the tools of melody, harmony, rhythm and tone colour. Students learn an instrument, and within a brief period, their sound is becoming controlled, recognisable and pleasing to the ear. To quote the philosopher Plato, “Education in music is most sovereign because more than anything else rhythm and harmony find their way to the innermost soul and take strongest hold upon it. The Girton Senior School Ensembles Concert is a testimony to the work of our students under the guidance of their passionate music teachers and is a significant milestone in their lives. Without the support of parents, students, our Headmaster and the Board the musical opportunities available for students at Girton would not exist. My thanks to those who provide ongoing support to Music, and particularly to our Music Staff, who are so enthusiastic in their work.

MUSICIAN AND

COMPOSER OF THE YEAR

2018

MONDAY AUGUST 27 2018, 6.00pm Black Box Theatre

The Performing Arts Building, Girton Grammar School Wattle Street, Bendigo DOOR ENTRY: $5 5

The Friends of Performing Arts parent group combines the energy, enthusiasm, talent and time of the previous Friends of Music and Friends of Drama groups, reflecting the growth in Performing Arts at Girton Grammar over the last decade. This growth is partially owing to the School’s wonderful Performing Arts Building, with the “Black Box” being the jewel in the theatrical crown, and also because of the close and professional working relationship between the Music and Drama Departments at the school. Girton Grammar fosters an appreciation of Art, Music and Drama from a young age, starting in the Junior School where every child learns a string instrument and is part of a choir.

Two thirds of Girton students, from Prep to Year 12 currently participate in Performing Arts, with over 100 performances within the school and the broader community every year, making the school a key player in the Bendigo Arts scene. The primary role of the Friends of Performing Arts group is fundraising, to support public performances and to continue to offer facilities of a high standard to all students. Interested parents, guardians and friends are welcome to become part of this exciting group by contacting Girton’s Performing Arts Administrator on (03) 5441 3114.

music captains

Christopher Field Strings Captain: Samuel Lindrea 11 Jenkin

Captain: Freda Paten 12 Jones

With about 4 years of experience playing in music ensembles, I can really sit back and watch the ensembles that I am a part of work in harmony. I love the feeling of inclusion in music ensembles and the social aspect of them.

Even from Year seven, going to a singing lesson or music co-curric always sent me skipping back to class with a huge grin on my face. And, though I loved music as a hobby, it wasn’t until this year that I decided to start classroom Music again for the first time since Year 8. The music staff constantly astound me with their alacrity and their passion for music.

Live performances are great as they teach you how to perfect a song. I remember last year in Guitar ensemble we practiced the same 2 songs probably 50 times for a 10-minute performance to achieve a high standard of which we would all be proud. Watching the skill level in my ensemble increase is very satisfying; when all the moving parts are working together properly, nothing is better.

Girton Concert Choir

The pressure of needing to refine a piece to connect with an audience is crucial to musical development. I’m still discovering that music is not to be stifled and hidden away but to be shared generously, and with abandon. There is always something a little bit magic when a song comes together and we all can just fall into it, relishing each harmony and turn of phrase.

Flute Ensemble

Captain: Toby Scott 11 Jenkin

Captain: Lucie Griffin 10 Frew

My music life at Girton started in 2013 whilst in Year 6, when I played saxophone in B.A.S.S (Band And Super Strings). I love the dedication and passion that comes from each of the students involved in Music.

I have been involved in the Music Department since arriving at Girton. It is a welcoming and supportive group of teachers and students who, together, create a very nurturing environment.

The discipline shown in a Girton performance reflects the dedication of everyone involved in Girton’s music programme, teachers, and students alike.

Live performances allow musicians to reach their potential and generate poise through performing. Personally, through live performances, I have been able to travel to America and France for singing.

Concert Choir primarily consists of students in younger Year levels and I have enjoyed befriending all of them and really getting to know them. I think we all contribute in a meaningful way and we genuinely appreciate the Concert Choir and the Girton music programme as a whole.

Girton Chamber Choir

Being the leader of a smaller ensemble group allows me to become closer with individual musicians. From this, I hope that I have developed leadership skills and have helped others become stronger performers.

Girton Singers

Guitar Ensemble & Big Band

String Orchestra

Captain: Kate Hadkins 12 Frew

Captain: Nelson Beks 12 Millward

Captain: Grace Falconer 11 Aherne

I have always enjoyed music and singing, receiving singing lessons from a young age, later on transitioning to singing lessons within the school with the wonderful Ms Schatzle. I love how Girton Singers involves girls from all of the different Year levels, which allows them to meet new people. Girton Singers has participated in multiple competitions and our performances always receive strong feedback, which demonstrates the hard work of Mrs. Dusseljee, Mrs. Higgs and all the girls.

I was first involved with the Girton Music program in the Year 5 Band playing alto saxophone. Since then I have played saxophone, guitar, electric bass, double bass and the drums. Now I mostly play classical guitar for VCE Music, but I also play Jazz bass in various ensembles.

Girton’s music program allows people to make new friends in all Year levels the same passion for music. It provides many opportunities for musicians to perform, enhance their music skills and to enjoy themselves.

I have been involved in Girton Singers for most of my Senior School life, and it has been a privilege to be Captain in my final year of school. The experience has enabled me to grow and develop my leadership skills and Mrs. D always puts a smile on everyone’s faces and makes rehearsals fun.

Symphony Orchestra

My favourite part of the music program is the consistent rehearsal time and always having another performance to work towards. Live performance puts you in a more alert state where you notice aspects of the music and your own playing that you otherwise would not. I enjoy leading the Guitar Ensemble because it is a very popular and accessible instrument and caters to a variety of skill levels. I enjoy leading Big Band because I love the jazz influence and the greater emphasis on “groove and feel” compared to classical music.

The Girton Jazz Band

String Orchestra has the wonderful opportunity to perform with the “Forever Young Rock Choir” every year. Although playing to a live audience can be terrifying, I love performing with this community choir as it brings many laughs and smiles, and can really make a person’s day. I truly enjoy the company of everyone in the String Orchestra. We are able to have fun but we also work hard to improve as an Ensemble.

Wind Symphony

Captain: Lily Begg 12 Jones

Captain: Oliver Vine 11 Jones

Captain: Olivia Mattiske 12 Aherne

I have found the sense of community within Girton’s Music Department to be so important. The ensembles build connections between students across Year levels and provide an encouraging environment for all musicians.

I have been involved in the music program for six years and have enjoyed different performances and opportunities every year throughout my experience, all of which have been positive.

I have been involved in the Girton music program since Grade 5 and I have loved being in many musical groups. I really enjoy expressing myself through creating music and sharing my love of music with the other music students.

In live performance, there is an engagement between audience and musicians that is unique. I love how music can shape atmosphere and emotion and, in a live setting, this is so much more powerful. As one of Girton’s largest and most diverse ensembles, Symphony Orchestra allows students from all instrument families to perform together and does a wonderful job in capturing the spirit of the school.

Live performances assist in the development of a strong musician and allow a progressive evolution to key performances, enhancing every musician’s development and technical proficiency. I enjoy being Captain of the Jazz Band and Vice -Captain of Big Band as it allows me to play with very skilled musicians who are all capable of playing different instruments and various genres. As a Captain I am very proud of the quality of music that is produced.

I think partaking in live performances are so important when learning music, as they give you something to work towards and they allow you to share your music with people. I also enjoy having an opportunity to show people what I have been working on and how far I’ve come in my music journey. In the Wind Symphony, I feel that we are all equals. I love working with the people in Wind Symphony because it is so lovely to be able to create music with people who share the same passion for music as I do.
