Connecting the Dots The Home Depot is committed to providing customers with the resources they need to complete any home improvement project. Connecting the Dots helps to directly connect customers to those resources. Throughout the design, Connecting the Dots uses large-scale peg boards in various innovative ways. The use of peg boards symbolizes the connection between product and resources. Connecting the Dots focuses on 1) new product display and demo; 2) bringing decor to life; and 3) garden creation space. These new display areas are sure to bring excitement and energy into the store by engaging customers in these interactive areas.

Innovation is a new-product display and demo area, focusing on smart home devices. This area will allow customers to be hands on with new smarttechnologies. It will allow customers to try new products, as well as learn more about what they do and how to install them. Alongside each product is an interactive tablet that displays features of the product and how it is used, as well as a tutorial on how the product is installed. The customer will be able to save the information they learned to their Home Depot app, or simply send it by text or email. The display counters are created in a way that makes it easy for team members to switch out products. Large-scale pegboards are installed on the counter tops in two detachable sections for easy access to cords and outlets.

Many customers don’t associate The Home Depot with home decor and furniture, Finishing Touches is here to change that. Many stores do not carry a wide selection of home decor and furniture, therefore if it’s out of sight it’s out of mind. Finishing Touches shows customers a sample of what they have to offer, and connects customers to where they can find the products.

Throughout the display are interactive tablets that show customers where to find the products, whether that be in-store or online. The tablets also provide customers with advice and tutorials on how to decorate their home, which can be saved on their Home Depot app or sent by text or email. The display uses large-scale pegboards which will allow team members to easily change out the displays with new products.

Limited space is one thing that holds people back from planting their own gardens. Build your own Garden (B.Y.O.G.) shows customers that everyone can have a garden, no matter what space they have. This interactive display provides customers with dierent garden options - from a traditional garden bed, to a vertical garden, or an herb garden to hang on a wall. Along with the garden type, customers can also select a size. With the use of largescale pegboards, the gardens can be truly customizable. The interactive display provides customers with a list of supplies needed depending on their customizations. Because each garden type is dierent, the display also provides customers with a list of what grows well in each type of garden. All customizations can be saved on the customer’s Home Depot app, or sent by text or email.

Attain Center for Autism The Attain center is a place for adults with autism to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the real world. The space is catered to the needs of individuals by offering adjustable and dimming lighting options, movable partitions, and flexible room layouts. A space can become exciting and fun, or quiet and calming depending on the need. Because of its flexibility, clients can create enviornments for themselves that will optimize their ability to learn, grow, and succeed. The logo design, inspired by rolling hills gradually growing taller and taller, represents how the Attain center enables clients to gradually reach higher and higher and attain their goals.

Research Designer’s Statement

Discussion of Research

People with Autism Spectrum Disorder vary greatly in how they think and interact

with the environment. It’s been said that, “if you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism” (Shore, 2018). There is no set way to help people with ASD because everyone on the spectrum is so different. This poses a challenge when designing a space for people with ASD because their needs vary so greatly. The purpose of this research is first, to explore the possible traits and characteristics of people with ASD, second, to learn about how people with autism interact with their environment, and finally to analyze past examples of spaces meant to help people with ASD.

Although the autism spectrum ranges from nonverbal to genius (Grandin, 2010) there

are commonalities. These include differences in communication and social interaction, as well as highly focused interests. Most people with ASD have a highly-developed talent in one area, or an intense, focused interest in one subject (Shore, 2018). Because the autistic brain processes information differently, people with ASD can often seem distant or cut off.

Temple Grandin, a well-known advocate for autism, explained that she had to learn social skills much like an actor learning a role. However, because of her autism, she had abilities that the average person does not. She could think in pictures and notice small details. This enabled her to revolutionize the cattle industry (2010).

Because people on the autistic spectrum process information differently, they

often interact with their environments differently. Some may be bothered by noises or smells, while others seek out extra stimulation. People with autism can be divided into two categories: hypersensitive and hyposensitive. Those who are hypersensitive are extremely

sensitive to sensory elements. Their brains aren’t able to prioritize sensory information so when there is a lot of stimulus, it can be overwhelming. Sounds, textures, lights (particularly fluorescent), smells, tastes, physical touch and strong visual elements can cause distress leading to “meltdowns” and sometimes aggressive behavior (Pellicano, 2012). Makenzie Fultz, a long-time volunteer for people with autism, says that movable barriers are a good way to prevent distraction and distress (Personal Communication, 14 October 2018). Hypersensitive people face the opposite problem. They have a slow response to sensory aspects and will seek out extra stimulation. “Stimming” is a term that refers to selfstimulation such rocking back and forth, spinning, flapping one’s hands, tapping objects and watching things spin (Jeon, 2018).

In a study done in Indonesia, it was shown that the physical layout of a space has a

direct impact on the actions of people with ASD (Atmodiwirjo, 2014). According to John Weaver, a special-education teacher with decades of experience, creating a space that is comfortable for people all along the spectrum is a difficult challenge because there is such a wide range of needs. What might be good for one person, may not be good for another (Personal Communication, 12 October, 2018). Kijong Jeon, an interior designer and educator, designed a center for people with ASD and focused primarily on providing stimulation. He looked to the Snoezelen method developed in the Netherlands which uses dimmed and colored lights, projections, bubble tubes, bean bag chairs, fiber optic curtains, and bubble mirrors to provide stimulation that is meant to help calm users. He cited studies that had found that multisensory environments can cause a 50% decrease in distress and a 75% decrease in aggression (Jeon, 2018). The results of a post-occupancy evaluation found the setting was overwhelming for many of the users when everything was turned on.

Although it calmed some people it was too much for others. The escape room, however, had very positive reviews. It was painted pink, which has been shown to be a calming color, was softly lit and had bean bags and weighted blankets. Staff also reported that clients reacted positively in areas with natural light and an outdoor atmosphere (Utah State, 2018). In Jeon’s second autism center, he paired down the stimulation to just specific areas which worked well for both hyposensitive and hypersensitive clients. He also incorporated more natural elements which was very well-received. One of the biggest things that the staff liked was the flow of the layout. Many of the clients like to wander and the layout provided interest but was still easy to navigate. Flexibility is key. Creating spaces that can be stimulating or calming depending on the need will broaden the range of people that can be helped.

Goals and Objectives

The goal of this project is to create a space that is customizable to the needs of each

individual. It will be comfortable for both hyposensitive and hypersensitive clients and will offer flexibility for a number of different activities. The main areas will be neutral and calm while small areas of stimulation will provide interest for hyposensitive clients. Natural light as well as dimmable and colored lights will enable staff members to create environments that best suit individual needs. The space will have intuitive flow through the floor plan so that it is easy for clients to find their way. The rooms will be equipped to serve a variety of functions. The majority of furnishings will be movable in order to offer greater flexibility.

Rooms will have movable partitions in order to maximize space for big activities as well as create smaller areas for individual use. A sensory room will offer sensory stimulation as well as smaller “escape” spaces for hypersensitive clients. The use of adjustable lighting, movable partitions, and flexible layouts will enable the space to be adaptable to the needs of individuals.

Analysis of Ingress, Egress and Universal Design

The Attain center is intended to be intuitive and natural for everyone to use

regardless of a person’s physical limitations. The design meets all ADA specifications and the wide halls and extra wide doors make it easier for someone in a wheelchair to have access. To increase ease of use for those in wheelchairs, the designers incorporated a 5’6” turning radius rather than the required 5’ radius. The building has two main exits, one at the front and one at the back. Both have level surfaces and are completely accessible with an egress distance of 72-’4”. The center is not only designed to be universally accessible, but universally beneficial to all of its users. It is meant to be comfortable for hyposensitive and hypersensitive persons with autism. The overall feel of the space is calming and neutral in order to put sensitive clients at ease. Light woods and soft greens create a calming, natural atmosphere. Occasional areas of color and texture provide doses of sensory stimulation needed by hyposensitive clients. The variety of lighting and room layout options allow the spaces to become fun and stimulating or quiet and calming depending on the needs of the individual. Because of its flexibility, the Attain center is a place where all sorts of people can learn to succeed.

People with Autism Spectrum Disorder vary greatly in how they think and interact with the environment. It’s been said that, “if you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism” (Shore, 2018). There is no set way to help people with ASD because everyone on the spectrum is so different. This poses a challenge when designing a space for people with ASD because their needs vary so greatly. The purpose of this research was first, to explore the possible traits and characteristics of people with ASD, second, to learn about how people with autism interact with their environment, and finally to analyze past examples of spaces meant to help people with ASD. The findings showed that most people with ASD have a highly-developed talent in one area, or an intense, focused interest in one subject (Shore, 2018). Because people on the autistic spectrum process information differently, they

People with autism can be divided into two categories: hypersensitive and hyposensitive.

Those who are hypersensitive are extremely sensitive to sensory elements while hyposensitive people process sensory information slowly and see out extra stimulation (Pellicano, 2012). In a study done in Indonesia, it was shown that the physical layout of a space has a direct impact on the actions of people with ASD (Atmodiwirjo, 2014).

However, after analyzing several post-occupancy evaluations of existing autism centers, it is aparant that what works for one person does not work for everyone. When designing a space for people with ASD fexibility is key. Creating spaces that can be stimulating or calming depending on the need will broaden the range of people that can be helped.

The reception area features natural materials, colors and patterns in order to create a calming atmosphere. The curved walls and corners echo the shape of the logo and add a friendly softness to the aesthetic.

The floor plan design makes the space universally accessible.

The hallway connecting the reception area to the offices in the adjoining building features a green wall with the Attain logo at the center. It is visible through the front windows adds interest to the exterior elevation as well as underscores the nature-inspired design of the autism center. hallway detail

BRANDING

The sensory room features vestibular swings, bean bags, movable partitions, and alcoves in order to suit the needs of a variety of users. Glowing rain drops on the ceiling, dimming lights, and projections on the wall create a calming atmosphere and add interest.

DE S IGN CO N CEPT The Attain center is a place for adults with autism to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the real world. The space is catered to the needs of individuals by offering adjustable and dimmable lighting options, movable partitions and flexible room layouts. A space can become exciting and fun, or quiet and calming depending on the need. Because of its flexibility, clients can create environments for themselves that will optimize their ability to learn, grow and succeed.

The design is inspired by rolling hills gradually growing taller and taller and represents how the Attain center enables clients to gradually reach higher and higher and attain their goals. flex room

Re¡Nu Medical Spa Re-Nu medical spa is a one of a kind spa, focused primarily on medical esthetic treatments. The facility provides a variety of treatments to their clients such as injections, botox, laser hair removal, cool sculpting and more. This project was done for Master Esthetician- Cierra Nuckols in partnership with neighboring Rocky Mountain Dermatology. This space was purposefully designed to be a comfortable and cozy space, while still maintaining a sterile environment. Clients come to this space in a state of vulnerability, so the comfort of the clients is of utmost importance.

While many medical spas tend to feel cold and sterile, the client desired the space to feel warm and inviting. Where cleanliness is of great importance, non-permeable finishes were selected throughout the project, and materials that can be sterilized were specified. The project also included helping with the name selection, the design of the logo, and product design.

Cierra Nuckols contract for design services

Kristen Beus Design will prepare schematic design and design development drawings to illustrate suggested design concepts.

Upon your written approval of the design concepts, Kristen Beus Design will generate the architectural drawings required for you to obtain your building permit.

These design services shall be provided for $20,000.

In addition to my design services, other consultants i.e.. structural, electrical and mechanical engineers may also be needed to participate in this project. You agree to enter into contracts directly with these firms. I am willing to provide names of qualified consults, or you can find your own. Although I (the designer) will provide you with construction documents, it is your responsibility in collaboration with the builder to obtain all approvals required by any governmental agency for this project.

During the course of your project, I will be available to make periodic visits to observe the work of these contractors to determine whether the contractor’s work is proceeding in general conformity with our concepts as well as address construction questions.

Constant observation of work at the project site is not part of my duties. I am not responsible for the performance, quality, timely completion or delivery of work, materials or equipment furnished by contractors who have signed agreements with you.

In the event that you request any design service not described in this letter, such as changes to the design that necessitate changes to the construction documents after your written approval of the design, will be invoiced to you at the following hourly rate of Lead Designer $100 per hour. Hourly charges (if applicable) will be invoiced to you monthly and are payable upon receipt of invoice.

Prior to commencing my services, an initial design fee of one thousand dollars ($1,000) is requested to be paid within thirty days from the signing of this agreement. This fee is non-refundable and is payable upon signing this agreement. The remainder of the fee shall be paid within 30 days of completion of construction. You also agree to reimburse Kristen Beus Design for any money that I spend on your behalf in the duplication of plans, drawings and specifications, messenger services and the like.

In addition to all other legal rights, I shall be entitled to withhold delivery of my services, should you fail to make any payments due on the project.

All concepts, drawings and specifications prepared by my firm and all copyrights and other proprietary rights applicable remain my property at all times. Project documents may not be used for any purpose other than completion of this specific project.

In the unlikely event that this relationship does not work to either of our satisfactions, fourteen days written notice is requested to address any problems. If the project is cancelled for any reason, you will remain liable for all services provided as of the termination date. Moreover, if there are still items in dispute upon termination, we agree to submit to binding arbitration only in the state of Utah in accordance with the Commercial Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association.

Naturally, we anticipate a smooth project and are excited to begin. To do so, please sign both copies of this letter and return one copy with your check for the initial deposit in the amount of $5,000 made payable to Kristen Beus Design. Upon receipt, I will schedule your project. If the fully executed agreement is not received within thirty days from the date of the agreement, I reserve the right to re-quote our fees.

Do not support ceilings directly from permanent metal forms or floor deck.

Fasten hangers to cast-in-place hanger inserts, postinstalled mechanical or adhesive anchors, or power-actuated fasteners that extend through forms into concrete.

Do not attach hangers to steel roof deck. Attach hangers to structural members.

When steel framing does not permit installation of hanger wires at spacing required, install carrying channels or other supplemental support for attachment of hanger wires.

Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for cleaning and touchup of minor finish damage. PROJECT CONDITIONS

A.

Comply with CRI 104 for temperature, humidity and ventilation limitations.

Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install carpet tiles until spaces are enclosed and weathertight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and ambient temperature and humidity conditions are maintained at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period.

Do not install carpet tiles over concrete slabs until slabs have cured and are sufficiently dry to bond with adhesive and concrete slabs have pH range recommended by carpet tile manufacturer.

WARRANTY Special Warranty for Carpet Tiles: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of carpet tile installation that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

Failures include, but are not limited to, more than 10 percent edge raveling, snags, runs, dimensional stability, excess static discharge, loss of tuft bind strength, loss of face fiber, and delamination.

EXAMINATION

A.

Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for maximum moisture content, alkalinity range, installation tolerances, and other conditions affecting carpet tile performance. Examine carpet tile for type, color, pattern, and potential defects.

B.

Concrete Subfloors: Verify that concrete slabs comply with ASTM F 710 and the following: 1.

Slab substrates are dry and free of curing compounds, sealers, hardeners, and other materials that may interfere with adhesive bond. Determine adhesion and dryness characteristics by performing bond and moisture tests recommended by carpet tile manufacturer.

2.

Subfloor finishes comply with requirements specified in Division 03 Section "Cast-in-Place Concrete" for slabs receiving carpet tile.

3.

Subfloors are free of cracks, ridges, depressions, scale, and foreign deposits.

Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

Fill or level cracks, holes and depressions 1/8 inch wide or wider and protrusions more than 1/32 inch , unless more stringent requirements are required by manufacturer's written instructions.

Remove coatings, including curing compounds, and other substances that are incompatible with adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, without using solvents. Use mechanical methods recommended in writing by carpet tile manufacturer.

3.3

INSTALLATION

A.

General: Comply with CRI 104, Section 14, "Carpet Modules," and with carpet tile manufacturer's written installation instructions.

B.

Installation Method: Glue down; install every tile with full-spread, releasable, pressure-sensitive adhesive.

C.

Maintain dye lot integrity. Do not mix dye lots in same area.

D.

Cut and fit carpet tile to butt tightly to vertical surfaces, permanent fixtures, and built-in furniture including cabinets, pipes, outlets, edgings, thresholds, and nosings. Bind or seal cut edges as recommended by carpet tile manufacturer.

E.

Extend carpet tile into toe spaces, door reveals, closets, open-bottomed obstructions, removable flanges, alcoves, and similar openings.

F.

Maintain reference markers, holes, and openings that are in place or marked for future cutting by repeating on finish flooring as marked on subfloor. Use nonpermanent, nonstaining marking device.

G.

Install pattern parallel to walls and borders.

H.

Stagger joints of carpet tiles so carpet tile grid is offset from access flooring panel grid. Do not fill seams of access flooring panels with carpet adhesive; keep seams free of adhesive.

PROJECT CONDITIONS

A.

Maintain a temperature of not less than 70 deg F or more than 95 deg F in spaces to receive linoleum floor coverings for at least 72 hours before installation, during installation, and for at least 72 hours after installation. After postinstallation period, maintain a temperature of not less than 55 deg F or more than 95 deg F.

B.

Do not install linoleum floor coverings until they are at the same temperature as the space where they are to be installed.

C.

Maintain relative humidity in spaces to receive linoleum floor coverings before, during, and after installation within the range recommended in writing by manufacturer.

D.

Close spaces to traffic during flooring installation and for time period after installation recommended in writing by manufacturer.

E.

Install linoleum floor coverings after other finishing operations, including painting and ceiling installation, have been completed.

F.

Do not install linoleum floor coverings over concrete slabs until slabs have cured and are sufficiently dry to bond with adhesive, as determined by floor covering manufacturer's recommended bond and moisture/alkaline tests.

EXTRA MATERIALS Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed, are packaged with protective covering for storage, and are identified with labels describing contents.

MANUFACTURERS Basis of Design Product: The design for each linoleum type is based on the product named in the Linoleum Floor Covering Schedule at the end of Part 3.

Subject to compliance with requirements, provide either the named product or a comparable product by another manufacturer.

Products from other manufacturers must be pre-approved prior to bid date and should be delivered to GSBS for Architect and Owner review. Allow 7 working days for review.

Submitted products will be evaluated for approval based on comparable construction makeup as well as design aesthetic.

PRODUCTS

A.

Linoleum Floor Coverings: Consisting of linseed oil, mixed with wood flour, rosin binders, dry pigments mixed and calendered onto a natural jute backing so that it is partially embedded in mixture. Patterns and colors extend through entire floor covering thickness.

B.

Trowelable Leveling and Patching Compounds: Latex-modified, portlandcement-based formulation provided or approved by floor covering manufacturer for applications indicated.

C.

Adhesives: Water-resistant type recommended in writing by floor covering manufacturer for products and substrate conditions indicated. Use Forbo Linoleums’ L910 Adhesive. Lay material into wet adhesive. Trowel 1/16” square notch. Spread rate-approximately 150 sq. ft. / gal.

C.

Remove coatings, including curing compounds, and other substances that are incompatible with flooring adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, using mechanical methods recommended by manufacturer. Do not use solvents.

D.

Broom and vacuum clean substrates to be covered immediately before product installation. After cleaning, examine substrates for moisture, alkaline salts, carbonation, or dust. Do not proceed with installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

Alkalinity and Adhesion Testing: Perform tests recommended by manufacturer.

Proceed with installation only after substrates pass testing.

F.

Moisture Testing: Perform tests recommended by manufacturer. Proceed with installation only after substrates pass testing.

Perform anhydrous calcium chloride test, ASTM F 1869. Proceed with installation only after substrates have maximum moisture-vapor-emission rate of 3 lb. of water/1000 sq. ft. (1.36 kg of water/92.9 sq.m) in 24 hours.

Scribe, cut, and fit floor coverings to butt neatly and tightly to vertical surfaces and permanent fixtures, including built-in furniture, cabinets, pipes, outlets, edgings, door frames, thresholds, and nosings.

Adhere floor coverings to substrates using a full spread of adhesive applied to substrate to comply with adhesive and floor covering manufacturers' written instructions, including those for trowel notching, adhesive mixing, and adhesive open and working times.

Provide completed installation without open cracks, voids, raising and puckering at joints, telegraphing of adhesive spreader marks, and other surface imperfections.

H.

Roll floor coverings according to floor covering manufacturer's written instructions.

I.

Heat-Welded Seams: Rout joints and heat weld with welding bead, permanently fusing sections into a seamless floor covering. Prepare, weld, and finish seams according to manufacturer's written instructions and ASTM F 1516 to produce surfaces flush with adjoining floor covering surfaces.

J.

After installation is completed, allow 72 hours for adhesive to properly bond and cure before implementing initial maintenance procedures.

Unroll sheet floorings and allow them to stabilize before cutting and fitting.

Lay out sheet flooring to comply with the following requirements: 1.

Maintain uniformity of floor covering direction.

Arrange for a minimum number of seams and place them in inconspicuous and low-traffic areas, and not less than 6 inches away from parallel joints in flooring substrates.

3.

Match edges of sheet flooring for color shading and pattern at seams according to manufacturer's written recommendations.

4.

Avoid cross and butt seams.

5.

Eliminate deformations that result from hanging method used during the drying process (stove bar marks) according to manufacturer's written recommendations.

C.

Integral-Flash Cove Base: Cove linoleum floor covering 4 inches up vertical surfaces. Support floor covering at horizontal and vertical junction with cove strip. Butt at top against cap strip. A cove base is not found in every location.

CLEANING AND PROTECTING

A.

Perform the following operations immediately after installing flooring products: 1.

Remove adhesive and other surface blemishes using cleaner recommended in writing by floor covering manufacturer.

2.

Sweep and vacuum floor thoroughly.

3.

Do not wash floor until after time period recommended in writing by floor covering manufacturer.

4.

Damp-mop floor to remove marks and soil using method and cleaner recommended in writing by floor covering manufacturer.

B.

Protect flooring against mars, marks, indentations, and other damage from construction operations and placement of equipment and fixtures during the remainder of construction period. Use protection methods indicated or recommended in writing by floor covering manufacturer.

1.

Apply protective floor polish to floor surfaces that are free from soil, adhesive, and surface blemishes. a.

Seal linoleum with not less than 3 coats of floor polish. b.

Use commercially available product recommended in writing by floor covering manufacturer. c.

Coordinate selection of floor polish with Owner's maintenance service.

2.

After drying room film (yellow film caused by linseed oil oxidation) disappears, cover linoleum floor coverings with undyed, untreated building paper until inspection for Substantial Completion.

Airbnb Office Headquarters Airbnb, founded in 2008, has seen consistent growth in the last eleven years of the company’s history. With over 6 million listings worldwide in over 81 thousand cities, and over 200 countries, Airbnb has been a company to watch. Today, Airbnb has 31 offices globally, with their headquarters located in San Francisco (Airbnb). With this immense growth, more and more jobs have been created within the structure of the company - with around 20 different departments.

Airbnb’s previous headquarters, designed by IDF Studio in San Francisco, was completed 4 years ago, but is already being outgrown. This is a new office proposal for the Airbnb headquarters, located in the developing area of Mission Bay in San Francisco. With the new Warriors Stadium – the Chase Center, and the new Uber Headquarters currently being constructed, Mission Bay is a prime location for the new office space.

The goal with the new headquarters is to integrate the community into the company. The integration of public spaces throughout the headquarters helps to connect the community into the space. Retail spaces are located on the west wing of the building, and the Airbnb coffee shop - on the east wing, is open to the public. The large exterior courtyard integrates the surrounding areas, and has great access from the neighboring Mission Creek park. An event space on the first floor of the building can be rented out by the public after business hours. The integration not only gets the public excited about Airbnb, but also engages employees.

Employee satisfaction is of the utmost importance to Airbnb; therefore, amenities and employee health are a big design focus on the project. The Airbnb café on the second floor provides employees with fresh food daily. Large break rooms are integrated to connect employees with one another. Collaborative workspaces are used, and adjustable standing height desks are used throughout the workstations.

Color Selection Color plays a big role in the Airbnb headquarters. Color is used in a variety of ways in this project, both as a branding opportunity, and as a wayfinding tool. In this project, the branding colors of Airbnb are used heavily. It was importat to use bright and cheerful colors to convey the contemporary business style of the company.

Anywhere you go in the project, you are sure to see the bright Airbnb branding colors. The use of bright colors brought a great opportunity to use color in the wayfinding of the space. With the immense scale of this project, wayfinding is extremely important. With this, each of the six floors of the project has an assigned color. These colors are used in the centralized areas of each of the floors, by the stairs and elevators. The color scheme continues throughout each level to give a visual representation of where in the building a user is. The bright and cheerful colors throughout the space are sure to create a fun and energetic work enviornment for all employees in the space, as well as any visitors or guests using the public areas.

Wayfinding While wayfinding is used very visually in the use of colors throughout the project, there are additional ways wayfinging is used more intuitively. The spaceplanning is well thought out for optimal circulation. The main level of the project is purpousefully a very open space, as to visually show the different areas of the space. Throughout the second floor, the more private areas are more closed off for the executive areas and meeting areas, this is done so that there is more privacy. The cafeteria is very open, and visually shows users of the space different dining options very clearly. In the workspace floors, wayfinging is used by making the shared areas, such as the restrooms, break rooms, and copy centers centralized. The goal of this project is to make all spaces easily accessed and to make the user experience one of ease.

The good news is that with the technology we have today, how people work can change and evolve, and it is. Workplace design plays a big role in how we work, and is a critical part of productivity, and employee health.

The design of the new Airbnb heaquarters facilitates a supportive workplace by being collaborative, integrating into the community, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and incorporating sustainability into the workplace. The purposeful design of the workstations helps to facilitate collaboration between employees; it also helps to build a positive sense of community between departments. The integration of small conference rooms throughout the open offices helps to create a more focused workstation in times the open workstation may be a distraction. Large break areas shared between departments helps to facilitate cross-functional relationships within in the company. Employees with built relationships within a company tend to stay longer, and are more satisfied with their jobs.

Mobile Library The Book Bus is a mobile library that travels to various neighborhoods and provides books and the use of computers to children in areas that do not have access to a community library. The goal of this mobile library is to help broaden knowledge in less educated areas. This fun bus is sure to provide a sense of excitement throughout the neighborhoods that it visits. This library provides a space where families can come to gain knowledge in a fun enviornment.

Riverside Residence The Riverside Residence is located on the Columbia Rivershore in Vancouver, Washington. This home was designed for young couple- Zach & Anna Beus, who have lived in the area for the last two years. The space will be home to the couple as well as their dog, and provides an additional living area in which guests can stay.

A feature wall is constructed of painted decorative concrete screen blocks which is centrally located by the stairs of the house. This small home is perfect for the young couple who love to travel, as much as they love to spend the weekend exploring the surrounding Portland Metropolitan Area.
