01 - PCR BOATHOUSE SPRING 2019 - STUDIO III

Tasked with designing a new boathouse to add to historic Boathouse Row, it must fit on a plot of land that bends along with the Schuylkill River. The Philadlephia City Rowing club boathouse is meant to house school-aged students for an afterschool program, thus needing space for rowers to do work. With plenty of space programmed for public use with varying degrees of privacy for student use.

PCR BOATHOUSE Force Joint

To understand the forces acting on the site, a study was conducted and various models were made in accordance with them. The models would function as a ”joint” to demonstrate and help visualize how forces of the river impacted the site.

This is a final version of the joint mentioned previously, and showcases the forces of tension, compression, and pivoting, and how they acton the site.

Based on the program and the amount of use each area would get, dictated the location they would be placed in. The flow of and access between spaces was also important, and the site itself played a key role in organization as well.

Physical Model

The model was also constructed in Rhino to work out the window framing, as well as to gain interior views and to experience how a user would feel when in this building.

Having large windows facing the water as well as as a skylight allows for as much natural light to enter the building as possible.

The abundance of space on the atrium floors allows for flexibility of space, and for there to be no preset program designated here.

02 - TROLLEY HOUSING AND BRANCH LIBRARY WINTER 2020 - STUDIO V

The location for the Housing/Library building is an empty lot just off Lancaster Ave., a bustling main thoroughfare that brings people into Philadelphia from all over Pennsylvania. The goal is to provide privacy to the residents of the building, but still have the library be as open and inviting as possible. Additionally, West Philadelphia is rich in history. By taking cues from historical photos, the housing established a rhythm with the twin rowhouses around it, and the library sought to demonstrate openness and the public nature of a trolley, for which it took inspiration from.

Iterative Models and Facade

The massings went through very gradual changes in form, with the final form returning back and touching on ideas that were introduced in the beginnings of the project, such as overhang. The digital model and the annotations shown above gives more detail, giving a better experience to the viewer.

The partial building facade also speaks to the texture of the building to the user.

03 - POWELTON HOLISTIC WELLNESS COMMUNITY CENTER SPRING 2020 - STUDIO VI

The Powelton School, located in the Powelton Village area has been relocated to another site with updated facilities. However, the site of the school itself holds a lot of importance in the community, thus the want to create a community center in its’ place. Catering to the residents of the neighborhood, the wellness center focuses on alternative methods of wellness, and to create a controlled yet calming environment for the users. Creating a place where one can find ground to balance themselves, be introduced to methods of self-management, and be a general meeting area of like-minded people can be beneficial for residents in the long run.

Sketches

These sketches worked through inspiration from tensile strucutres and how to incorporate it into the old school building and its’ extension to create functioning and pleasing spaces.

Tensile structures and how they promoted the flow of space greatly influeneced the massing of this project.

04 - THE OVERLOOK AT BARTRAM’S GARDEN WINTER 2021 - STUDIO VIII

The historic Bartram’s Garden and John Bartram House is now run and operated by the City of Philadelphia. Located in South West Philadelphia, the garden sits on the west bank of the Schuylkill River and is pen to the public. The scope of the project had included adding program elements like an inn, a mussel farm, event space, and other elements to encourage community engagement. While not creating being too intrusive to the landscape, added pathways connect one side of the site to the other to create a more cohesive experience, as well as connection to the Schuylkill River Trail. This project is an overview of the site with further exploration in incorporating the landscape to one specific building in the next studio.

Rendered Site Plan and Vignettes

This overall site plan shows the general layout, as well as the trees in the Historic Area. Using the river and the bike that at the top and bottom of the site as the natural spines for circulation, the regulated lines of the historic garden were used as a natural juxtaposition, and to create pathways for visitors to traverse the site internally, rather than solely on the edges of the garden. The rendered vignettes aim to show the experience one would have as a user, as well as show the various areas and their uses.
