UAUS project director refocus seoul architecture 2014

16 Union of Architecture Universities in Seoul , the 3rd Annual Exhibition 2014.05.03-08 UAUS is an unique type of union which never is a club or architecture circle, but a group that is based on the student presidents of the 16 Architecture Schools in Seoul city, united to promote higher contact and communication with each other. Architecture, according as a major to market, is a narrow in sized community. Although today is viewed as the communication media era, SNS and networks does not tell all the story we have in every each universities. UAUS stood up in the year 2012, established in Yonsei University. Every year after the 1st, Pavilion exhibition take place annually. Starting from the Yonsei University campus and Hongdae downtown street, for the year 2014 we took our pavilion event place in park marronier, a place for the young and culture.

Personally, I participated as the designer of the 1st, and 2nd exhibition previously, representing Chung Ang University. Eventually I became the executive project director in the 3rd annual exhibition for UAUS, working for planning and digging support to an architectural festival which had been initiated and carried out only by the students, regardless of each university’s curriculums. A year work as the project director leading 20 students for the time and generally more than 300 students in the construction site, management was beyond the control.

Voluntary participation during the semesters were the hard days. However to be the student representative for the 16 prestigious schools in Korea, it was a privilege and the greatest experience for my academic days.

Generally, the exhibition project takes place in the construction site, where prefabricated design parts and materials arrive at the park marronnier. 40 hours of construction time in the Park Marronier makes great episodes of stories and dramatic exchange of ideas from a school to another. After the exhibition, criticized and evaluated by the professor groups asked with invitations, prizes for the winning university is to conduct next year’s exhibition.

“2014 Annual Exhibition : Refocus Seoul Architecture” is the topic we devised from many meetings. Korea’s architecture as culture is literally sinking to the ground, where the country prefers architecture as a capital of real estate, no more than a piece of artwork. Apartment rose sky-high in the Seoul city, when not much masterpieces of architecture are in being for the public to experience. Thus, as architecture market collapse especially happened during the last few years, SPACE Group : Korea’s noble architcture firm since the modernism times, went bankrupt in 2013. This terrible incident made great shock to the architecture relatives. We, representing the student group, hence decided to gather together and revitalize the architecture recession as a cultural event. 16 different architecture schools choosing 16 different architecture based on Seoul City, reinterpret with creativity, designed and constructed their individual pavilions.

In the year 2014, the exhibition opened with high success, more than 200 architecture students around Seoul enjoyed the work, and served great cultural contents to the public. What we can study and work is boundless. Collaboration and communication which is the most important aspect in architecture, wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a difficult approach after all.

gangnam 24/7 SUSTAINABLE VERTICAL CAMPUS

Gangnam 24/7 : Sustainable High Rise Vertical Campus for Everyone Gangnam station is viewed as the today’s best example of fast moving city. Considering the adjacent massive public transit system, the site can be best described as urban node.

Various people, who regularly commute using this huge public transportation system will be the target user group in the specified site. Also Gangnam is a unique city that needs high-quality education. Thousands of higher education seeking people rushing out to the subway and bus stations reflects the urgency of the need. However, because of the high price of landed estate of Gangnam province, no actual state of ‘campus’ can be constructed. Therefore, vertical campus is our proposal and solution for effect of sustainable education service. It could be filled up all the time, all day long by new users steadily and also be the recognizable spot in the block. “Gangnam 24/7” is named by the site specific analysis and designer’s objectives to reactivate the urban space.

We try to construct building depending on a few features to meet our aforementioned purpose. First one is ‘ Park in the city’. Gangnam is a compact city without any green spaces offered to the public. The tower’s podium portion is designed to minimize physical contact with the natural terrain in order to rehabilitate as a natural synthesis. Circulation of the tower is another feature of the building. It is very precise and recognizable. Changing user groups (Un-Routine students) move vertically within the ‘ramp plates’ by brilliant colored vertical circulation. First-time users can easily read the specific programs, where they are located at. At last, zoning is ambiguous. In order to collect massive educational block vertically, diverse spaces need to be concentrated and mixed up. Vertically stacking spaces get twisted around each other, instead of building their own zone. Spaces are intruding each other and sharing entirely different functions; so activities can occur seamlessly.

We considered few green factors to construct Gangnam 24/7. Facades are placed on every wall to shut the sunlight and diminish wind effect. They assume the form of eyelid and transform into various alterations as directed. The whole shape is twisted and jutted out variously to response climate changes. Curved eyelids also make wind flow taking a detour and lessen the swirl around the building. PV system is installed on the surface of the eyelid facade, where most sunlight is abutted to. Sustainability is the key issue with the eyelid facade system, and its module ceramic parts can be easily managed conserving its mobility. Also the sunlight is double, even triple reflected by the layers of the buffer zones. Eyelid facade, double glazed curtain wall, and vertical wooden louver block out sunlight in turn. Atrium, made of vacant spaces, is penetrating whole building and cause vertical ventilation. This space cools down the indoor temperature in the summer and captures warm air in the winter.

Site-specific Spatialisation for public needs We figured out the requisite spaces on site, and masses are designed by stacking these programs. Masses are placed according to the needs around the site.

Surrounding context analysis Gangnam, especially our site, is the city of skyscrapers. It is a transport center and the block of diversity where accommodates various kinds of people in a 24/7 routine.

Campus mass relations structural connectivity High-rise building must be highly stabilized with great understandings of building structure system.

Gangnam 24/7 is established with the twin cores and outrigger system in two different levels to resist lateral force when approximately 200 meter tower meets severe winds created within the microclimate.

The overall spaces are classified into 5 different classes. Gangnam 24/7 never is a simple compound, but a vertical complex required in the city.

Sunlight Sunlight is double, triple reflexed by the layers of the buffer zones.

First, the eyelid facade made out of ceramic accepts winter sunlightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s low altitude and excludes the high altitude summer rays with its shades. Second, double glazed curtain wall invites the light in shutting out the extreme temperature from the open air. Third, another shading device : vertical wooden louver shades provides booming indoor light atmosphere, best conditions for the userâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s space. Sunlight integrated design with various series of shading system serves great diversity of spatial experience to the users, and optimum sunlight control.

Ventilation Atriums which made of vacant spaces are penetrating whole building and cause vertical ventilation. This space cool down the indoor temperature in summer and captured warm air in winter.

PARK IN THE CITY

Approaching as an urban scope of view, Gangnam is a compact city where capacity of millions of population per day make activities, without any green space offered to the public. Nearby there are bunch of massive high-rise office buildings and high-desity apartment residential. These urban spaces include several green spaces served only for the corresponding user’s group. Gangnam 24/7 design’s one key feature is to consider the public demands for urban green. The tower’s podium portion is designed to minimize physical contact with the natural terrain, though partially covered up with structural utilities, in order to rehabilitate as a natural synthesis. Park in the city is another viewpoint of the design goal, giving comparative breathable nature in the high developed city scape.

CLEAR READABLE CIRCULATION

The circulation of the tower is very precise and recognizable. The design was motivated in such public structures as terminal or airports circulation system. Clear readable circulation for public flow is essential for a vertical campus project. Though functioning 24/7 in the site as a program mass, the user groups are not fixed all the time. Changing user groups (Un-Routined students) move vertically within the ‘ramp plates’. by brilliant colored vertical circulation, first-time users can easily read the specific program they are located at. Also the ramp plates act as public space and a vertical atrium space which collects sunlight and air ventilation more pleasurable for the building users. Gangnam 24/7 is an unique building which provides collectable public spaces in a 200 meter high-rise.

PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ZONING : AMBIGUITY

To collecting massive educational block vertically, diverse spaces need to be concentrated and mixed up. Vertically stacking spaces get twisted around each other, instead of building their own zone. Identical programs scatter over the building and there is no exact separation in the floor. Spaces are intruding each other and sharing entirely different functions so activities can occur borderless. Every spaces can be anywhere in the campus and all spaces are tied up entirely.

Eyelid Facade Facades are placed on every wall to shut the sunlight and diminish wind effect. They assumes the form of eyelid and transforms into various alterations according to direction. Whole shape twisted and jutting out variously to response climate changes. The upper eyelid protrudes and accepts sunlight selectively.(according to height of the sun, it cuts off summer light or accepts winter light). Curved eyelid make wind flow taking a detour and lessen the swirl around the building.

Eyelid is parametrically designed forming slight interaction with the direct sunlight density. PV system is installed on the surface of the eyelid facade where most sunlight is abutted to: considering the surrounding high-rise office buildings, the higher the facade is located, the more PV system is densely populated to collect maximum sunlight into energy with highest efficiency. Sustainability is the key issue with the eyelid facade system, and its moduled ceramic parts can be easily managed and conserved with its mobility.

Gangnam in the fast city, we try to make the place where can be sustainable functions&activities. concentrating suitable functions on the suitable site to meet overflowing demands of people. it could be filled up all the time, all day long by new users steadily. and it also be the recognizable spot in the block. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Gangnam 24/7â&#x20AC;? is named by the site specific analysis and designerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s objectives to reactivate the urban space.

the Context

Hongdae Street represents today’s hottest location in the city for culture and fashion. The biggest issue was to figure out the icons of the context, and dissolve it into the pavilion for the being of a new type of landmark. We found out some clues in front of the shop fronts.

SMALL Icon

Eiffel tower, as an landmark is recognized with its new matters of materialism, steel. Though size matters in architectural form of landmark, pavilion doesn’t. Materials which reach the best suit with the site can attribute as today’s new icon.

Starting from the Yonsei University campus in 2012 , Project subject called “A Seoul You Want to Walk in, A street You Want to Walk in” Pavilion Exhibition took place in Hongdae street.

Material

Steel hangers, especially the commonplaced white ones are the daily-used item in Hongdae street. Also, its materialism in thin steel structure can be creatively transformed in many different ways. its affordable cost is one of the greatest benefits for mass-production to an architecture.

Design

Prototype becomes the desgin, design soon reinterpreits as an structure wall. 5 walls constructs into a cube, where the title “CUBE DE EIFFEL” became. The small hanger pavilion form the concept of Eiffel tower’s approach in landmark.

Recycleable pavilion [CUBE DE EIFFEL]

CUBE DE Eiffel is fully recycleable. After the pavilion exhibition season (2013.05.03~2013.05.10), the structure consisting of 10500 steel hangers are planned to relocate them to the adjacent stores for donation.

Also we contributed to the cloaset students who live apart from their families in seoul for little bit of burden in their personal closets. Sharing helped, and pavilion was fully recycled. for more information and movie clip:

bocksille : from livestory take urban 72 hr. realtime project by seoul city

Bocksille, a Sensory dialogue complex

Bocksille is an unique project hosted from the seoul metropolitan government where 72 hour is given to design and construct a public furniture ; a bench. Team LIVESTORY adventured to participate the project constituted with different artist based on architecture: landscape designer, furniture designer, media artist and architecture students. The team worked as one, converging diverse interest and professions into one project output.

Bocksille is actually a Korean name for dogs. There are three hackeneyedly common spoken names in Korean language : CheolSoo, YoungHee and Bocksille. (Easily read as common boy, girl, and a little puppy.) Since bocksille is a long time standard name for a little dog, what is it related with the project sited in the most important travel&historical heritage: the Gwanghwamun? The artist of LIVESTORY wanted to design the most commonly seen object , the traffic rubber cone, to be the iconic structure with a bit of pop art’s wit, and society critical sense of view. The site is Korea’s representitive space where historical events and stories starts from. Today, however, Loyalty of the Gyrongbok palace never lasted as present while only the skin is being left as a stuffed animal. The team wanted to activate Bocksille as not only a bench but a media for the public to begin their story with. The subtitle of the project for Bocksille is complexed body of media for new sense of conversation.

Traffic rubber cones define Gwanghwamun’s context. Its functionality as a bench reminds of low wooden benches where we used to play and lay down on. The landscape of the upper part acts the most important role in the work overall project to give environmental wellness to the traffic island. public seamlessness desire for a place with most publicity in gwangwhamun

The project was a personal work in the 2nd semester aimed to design a large-scale cultural multiplex in a scenery of urban public location. Gwanghwamun, approaching for the second time in designing architecture at, is Korea’s key location for travelers and historical contents. Gwanghwamun plaza has been developed by times, where the last development was held in the 2000’s, making a 600 meter lengthly public square in the middle of the traffic as an island. Though plaza is often criticized since lack of communications take place with the surrounded building fronts due to the formality, public events and festivals take place in a weekly routine.

The problems about the today’s plaza are boundless. However I decided to narrow the view into solving fundanmental problems of the space. When big events occur in the public square, the set up of the transitory stages take place simultaneously with the normal customary conditions. The public space transforms into construction site with trucks and preparing works. The scene in inevitable to be dangerous for the public activities, quarantine is installed in the open against the public.

Will this public phenomenon justifiable for the national symbolic road? controversies can be diverse but the discomfort is natural. The site for the project hence is the emptyused space adjacent to the public plaza. Viewing east to the Gwanghwamun, there exists another public park, which today been used in an unefficient manner. In the method of overlapping the public plaza’s axis with new cultural zone, architecture with new form of open space will relieve the unconvinience. The new cultural complex I would like to propose is not only unique for its open space or use, but also the comprehensive function of the gradual sunken plaza for architectural-stage. This will leave current public space serving a 24 hour open and temporary stage construction load to be minimized. This can eventually create another public seamlessness to Korea’s national symbolic square.

project gwanghwamun : ways to view national heritage with 2 architectural designs.

Bocksille and Public seamlessness it the two project I have made the location on the same context : the Gwanghwamun. Since there are so much social and politic issues around the site, it was one of the most difficult project to handle with. Site with such subtle issues and controversies takes much time to make decisions with a new idea.

Brick, historically is the oldest building material been handled with. Durability and mobility is its key advantages for being a popular used material for centuries. Not only for its performance but the warmth it contain beneath, gave me the idea that Brick can be interpreted as a democratic , other words, peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s common material.

Since Gwanghwamun and Kyungbok Palace in front of the site representâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s loyal icon of Korean history, the new proposal cultural space must low down its representation in a modest way. Project Public Seamlessnessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s facade system is designed with white bricks for the public use, and will eventually be reflected its mass form by the shiny curtainwall office buildings surrounded by. Bricks act as a double skin facade expressing complexed program use in the elevation, pilling up in a parametric design method.

Another issue was to deal with various group of puvblic influences which flow between the site. Cyan dots are the travelers and visitors to the Gwanghwamun, Magenta dots represent daily office user group, Green dots are the temporary crowds in occasional events and festivals. Three different user groups in different time use is merged into one layer and analyzed. New public device in the site can be predicted to control their movement in a more creatuive pattern.

public interweave apgujung : defining an artificial block

Urban character of Apgujeong can not be easily analyzed of understood. Unique social tension exists in the city.

Interweaving programs and spaces was the idea to harmonize the social issue into a less stressed social relations.

Shopping, education, office, pastic surgery (beauty) , residential user groups all intercept in this particular site.

Apgujeong, a space for the new wealth, is called as the recently developed Beverly Hills of Korea. High income bracket social group use the place, hence, parallel and vertical interweave of movement is the architectural grammer to define the artificial block. Neither fast nor slow movement conducts social harmony and impartially locate different program uses.

Led by head architect, JUNSEUNG WOO from LESS architects, the team of artists is comprised of architecture students from CAU and YONSEI UNIVERSITY.

WORK STATEMENT : GENERATIVE FORMATION

From small to big, infant to adult, egg to chicken, the many processes in between is best understood by the concept of ‘TIME’.

Within this ‘TIME’, there is a transition of size, density, velocity and weight, sometimes slow and sometimes quick, which is captured by this team of artists, who aim to capture the logic of transitions and control by their designs. between the part and the whole, within this space, the artists have made their designs focusing on capturing the stimulus and its response.

From geometric module cluster, organ to body - within these processes, the artists have found tension, and the direction of growth. through this understanding, the artists have made growth and design, adding mutation to control its form to capture their desired design.

Accordingly, their work remains in progress and is not complete.

Indeed, it will not be finished until the artists stop making growth with their design intention. this is a cut of film . it can grow as much as the artists want, and it can be furniture, room interior, structure, or architecture ….this is tool for the invention of new spaces, which is remains within the minds of the artists.

PLATOON KUNSTHALLE SEOUL As PLATOON KUNSTHALLE is located in the upscale cheongdam area the confrontation of subculture with the close-by design houses, commercial galleries and luxury brand stores creates a tension and interaction between the two worlds. the seoul KUNSTHALLE also provides showcases of underground artists, studio residencies and a fine selection of cutting-edge stage performances to introduce the energetic potential of subculture in korea and asia.

Subculture at PLATOON KUNSTHALLE is presented in different formats like exhibitions, movie nights, concerts and multimedia performances, workshops, discussion panels and special events. the four scholarship programs give young upcoming artists from korea and abroad the opportunity to develop creative projects at the PLATOON KUNSTHALLE. the four showcases present every month striking works from the subculture and streetart field including leading artists of the international urban art scene.

Our motive is to give motivations to the public the idea of generative formation can hold flexibility for its scale, form and material. We conducted our designs as creative as possible and figured out the most efficient way of digital formation to be fabricated in the possible time schedule. The showcase successfully commenced and the expressions with light, media art, kinetics made Kunsthalleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s atmosphere to highest specularity.

We desired to realize the idea of parametric design in a more interactive and dynamic way for the showcase at Gallery Hillstate through the research on 3d geometry, material, and fabrication.

This parametric pavilion was realized with translucent hybrid cotton and LED lights which is linked with motors and sensors to response to human behavior and to give the impression of an organic â&#x20AC;&#x153;livingâ&#x20AC;? creature.

In order to fabricate this parametric pavilion, exactly 150 sheets of flame-proof, cotton-coated modules were folded, which is 700mm x 900mm sized.

These modular panels are joined with tension-wire and regulated holes to connect each other, controlling tensional force by hanging weight of materials and devices.

Each tension-wire is connected to motorize in order to make interactive movement by sensors, responding to human behavior in space.

[Architects + Composer + Media Artist + Engineers + Sculptor] The world is overflowing with sounds, sound is one element which composes the world. Though the world is affluent with musical instruments which allows us to hear beautiful sounds, majority of people doesn’t have a clue why and how the instruments are made.

There are diversity of artist groups whom love music and gathered together in a place to analyze today’s most used instruments by reassembling them, and with their individual ideas and talents , designs a new prototype form of musical instrument which never have exist until today. New technology of the fabrication industires : 3D printing method and the hybrid style approach to the engineering are the key means of workflow.

EBS initialized the project for educational purposed documentary film, with many numbers of today’s Korean best young artists, as an architectrual student, the team brainstormed and constructed a instrument which can be experienced by spatial use.

competition entry, winning the silver prize. Nodle island is an abandoned island in the center of Seoul. In the concept of creating an urban light house, three isolated mass split enhances different view type, separating different programs served in each mass will be energy-efficient because it minimizes inner core program surfaces. Between the tree masses, three cloud structure holds three structures acting as an outrigger structure, and a sky park.

The work was developed with 2 other members from SKKU architectural engineering students, which enabled us to not only approaching in a brief structure system estimation, but allowed us to analyze the effectiveness of the overall structure and detailed structural designs which include building materials.

While Cultural assets have remained unchanged, the cities have changed. Two opposite spaces in the wall have been existing.

City that constantly changed has modern and present scenes, but Jongmyo has kept its conditions to have previous figures and will remain without changes.

This site has many different time layers. Compromising solution between city continuously changing and cultural asset (Jongmyo) that will be kept without change will be required.

Seosunragil is a urban space next to Jongmyo, Historical UNESCO Heritage for King’s altar. However the town surrounding is becoming lagging behind of the old industry’s factories which is not active today. There are many Korean traditional housing types : HanOk, unused or showing cultural backwater. I asked myself what kind of architectural device can thoroughly relieve this kind of situation. Hoping for the old Seoul’s centroid, I organized the lost clusters of 10 HanOk Housings, rebuilding them, and regaining vitality to the place. The housing acts as guesthouse for the next generations and the new building acts as the wellfare center, supporting center for the guesthouses.

modular house uaus 2012 project : new standard of student housing system

UAUS is an unique type of union which never is a club or architecture circle, but a group that is based on the student presidents of the 16 Architecture Schools in Seoul city, united to promote higher contact and communication with each other. Architecture, according as a major to market, is a narrow in sized community. Although today is viewed as the communication media era, SNS and networks does not tell all the story we have in every each universities. UAUS stood up in the year 2012, established in Yonsei University. Every year after the 1st, Pavilion exhibition take place annually. Starting from the Yonsei University campus and Hongdae downtown street, for the year 2014 we took our pavilion event place in park marronier, a place for the young and culture.

The first UAUS exhibition required a new standard of student houseing system in Seoul city. Booming economy bubbled real estate market, university students no more have sufficient economic capability to own a house, even lease one. Students in 8 architecture universities aimed to design and construct a affordable, sustatainable housing prototype.

Modular house is what Chung Ang University representatives designed to contribute a well-being living for the students. Each modular prototype is designed with Lecourbusierâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s human measurement ratio. These modules function as furnitures, electronic devices, and a simple solid wall or void. Various modulars will be developed and updated in the future industries just like todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s App Store, and regardless of time and space, easily purchased and replaced into new type.
