FROM FRUIT PEELS TO CRUEL-FREE LEATHER

INFO Place: Milan, Italy

Year: 2023

Type: Material

Professor: Federica Doveil

“No More Rotten” is an innovative project that explores the potential of creating cruelty-free, sustainable leather alternatives from fruit waste. By utilizing peels and byproducts from various fruits such as apples, cactus, pineapples, bananas, oranges, and coconuts, the project aims to reduce waste and provide a viable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional leather.

Each fruit-based leather has its own unique properties, ranging from durability and water resistance to softness and biodegradability. The project showcases the versatility of these materials, demonstrating their potential use in a wide range of applications, including fashion accessories, upholstery, and furnishings.

By repurposing fruit waste into a valuable resource, “No More Rotten” contributes to a more sustainable and circular economy, reducing the environmental impact of both the agricultural and fashion industries.

This innovative approach not only minimizes waste but also offers a crueltyfree alternative to animal-based leather, catering to the growing demand for ethical and environmentally conscious products.

BRINGING VALUE TO MATERIALS THROUGH AWARENESS, AND DEMONSTRATING HOW WASTE CAN BE USED INTELLIGENTLY

WHY?

From all fruit produced, we throw away nearly half, either by farmers because the pieces do not meet the cosmetic standards of supermarkets, or by consumers in developed countries.

A large amount of peel waste is generated from fruit and vegetablebased industries and household kitchen and has led to a big nutritional and economic loss and environmental problems.

Processing of fruits and vegetables alone generates a significant waste, which amounts to 25–30% of the total product.
