OCTOBER 21–23 FRIDAY–SUNDAY

TRAIL RUNNING AND YOGA Sarajean Rudman and Stephen Alsdorf

FOR everyone comfortable running a 5K race. CE credits. Enjoy a weekend of yoga and outdoor adventure in the beautiful Berkshires. Trail running and yoga may seem fundamentally different in their approach to movement, but they share many unexpected traits. Each demands a high level of mental, emotional, and physical awareness—skills that a growing body of research suggests prevent injury and optimize performance.

Running as Meditation in Motion SYNCHRONIZE THE BREATH WITH YOUR FOOTFALLS. This is a great anchor for the mind. Try inhaling for four steps and exhaling for four steps; as other thoughts start to come into your mind, bring your attention back to the breath and the footfalls. COUNT YOUR STEPS. Pick a number—say eight—and count up to eight with eight footfalls, and down from eight with eight more footfalls. As you focus on counting, the mind will naturally land in a meditative state and begin to let go of whatever unfinished business you left behind when you laced up. USE THE FIVE SENSES. Bring your attention to the sense of sight—looking at the landscape, noticing all the colors around you. Activate the sense of hearing: Listen for the farthest sound, then the closest sound, then all the sounds in between. Feel the wind or sun on your skin; tune in to the scents in the air. FINISH A SENTENCE. Try completing a sentence like “I am aware…” or “I notice…” For instance: “I notice a tree that is changing colors; I notice a child playing; I notice I am sweating; I notice my heartbeat…” You might notice the same things repeatedly—that’s okay!

Join Kripalu Yoga teacher Sarajean Rudman and medical doctor Stephen Alsdorf, both avid runners, to • Experience daily runs on well-maintained forest and ridge trails right outside Kripalu’s front door • Learn how to prevent injuries and run with more ease and greater joy • Explore how running and yoga complement each other to develop mindbody strength, flexibility, and stability • Practice yoga each day to build endurance and awareness • Discover the specific health benefits of natural environments with an introduction to the science of “forest therapy.” TUITION $249, plus room & meals; see page 96. Making an Impact The true measure of our mission is the impact we have on people’s lives, at our retreat center and in the world. THE MULTIPLIER EFFECT

CARING FOR THE CAREGIVERS

Everyone deserves yoga. Your donations fund scholarships and grants that bring individuals from all backgrounds to Kripalu for in-depth training in yoga, yoga therapy, and Ayurveda, so they can share tools for health and well-being when they return to their families and communities. Our donor-funded grants support graduates of the Kripalu Schools who take the gifts of these practices to populations around the world who are facing physical, mental, and economic challenges—including at-risk teens, inner-city children, and those with disabilities.

Our evidence-based Kripalu Approach to Healthy Living programming, developed over 10 years of study and research, translates the wisdom and practice of yoga into a scientifically validated curriculum for self-regulation and skillful living. The support of our generous donors allows us to offer this programming at no charge to educators, social workers, corrections officers, and health-care providers—changing the culture of our most vital human services organizations. With our research partners at Harvard Medical School, we continue to analyze the powerful impact of this curriculum on these frontline professionals and those they serve.

We’re investing in positive change. You can help.

Your donations make it possible for us to empower people and communities through the transformative wisdom and practice of yoga. Your gift at any level makes a difference.

Healing the Scars of War with the Power of Yoga My time with the US Armed Forces left me with physical and emotional scars, causing deep psychological pain over the years. After I was diagnosed with PTSD, I found myself on the yoga mat. For the first time in many years, I felt I was doing something that helped me address my fears, anxieties, and anger. I began to feel the joys in life once more. Today I am a Kripalu Yoga teacher, and my students include military veterans recovering from experiences like mine. — Michael R., scholarship recipient and Kripalu Yoga teacher, Bloomfield, Connecticut Read Michael’s story at

How the Body Releases Trauma and Restores Goodness PETER A. LEVINE FOR psychotherapists, physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, bodyworkers, and educators. CE credits.

Discover how the body releases trauma and allows trauma survivors to heal deep wounds—physiologically, psychologically, and spiritually. Peter A. Levine invites psychotherapists and other helping professionals to a training that covers all aspects of the trauma response and shows how body-oriented psychotherapy can transform trauma and help restore goodness. Explore the implications of body-oriented psychotherapies in the light of recent neuroscientific findings on how the brain and body deal with emotional information. Traditionally, therapies have attempted to change perceptions of the world through reasoning, insight, conditioning, behavior modification, or drugs. However, it’s only when the internal experience of the body changes that perceptions can shift and trauma survivors can become fully present and able to move forward in their lives. Introduction to TraumaSensitive Yoga David Emerson and Jenn Turner FOR yoga teachers and mentalhealth professionals. CE credits.

The yoga program run by the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute has helped thousands of people dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), from survivors of chronic abuse to war veterans. Research done by the Trauma Center showed that the Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) model significantly reduced symptoms of PTSD. The founder of the program, David Emerson, and his senior colleague, Jenn Turner, offer a 40-hour workshop for yoga teachers who wish to bring elements of trauma-sensitive yoga to their students or clients.

Overcoming trauma means fully engaging in the present without being hijacked by survival-related emotions and sensations. Success means allowing yourself to know what you know and feel what you feel without reentering the past. Recovery depends on physical experiences that contradict sensations and feelings of helplessness and disconnection. This program, based on the practices of yoga and mindfulness meditation, includes • Current research on trauma • An exploration of how overwhelming experiences change the capacity for self-regulation and how imprints of trauma are held in the body • How brain function is shaped by experience • Specific techniques that affect regulation, the integration of dissociated aspects of experience, chronic helplessness, and the reintegration of human connections. Your increased understanding fertilizes the application of effective trauma interventions, including EMDR, yoga and sensorimotor processing, Internal Family Systems, and neurofeedback. We think of courage as translated into public acts of bravery— confronting opposing forces or challenging circumstances. But the linguistic origin of the word is couer, meaning heart. Courage is the measure of our heartfelt participation with life, others, community, and work. To be courageous is to seat our feelings deeply in the body and in the world, to live up to and into the unending vulnerabilities of the relationships and things we care deeply about. To be courageous is to stay close to the way we are made. Explore the foundational elements of a courageous life with David Whyte. Through the revelations of poetry and the poetic tradition, David guides us to look into the bold, courageous, vulnerable, and occasionally painful steps we can take to bring our real identity out into the world; to be and do, to achieve, and, above all, to give. Getting older can be a soulchanging experience, a lifelong journey of discovery in which you move toward greater fulfillment and self-realization. This weekend, we look at aging in a whole new light, and discover that it can be so much more than merely piling up the years and the physical changes they bring. Learn to celebrate aging while staying young in mind, imagination, and spirit, as you • Recognize aging as a process through which you become more emotionally intelligent, sensitive, wiser, and more creative • Find new meaning and soul growth in past experiences and relationships

A groundbreaking meeting of diverse voices addresses the interface of yoga and body image.

Body Positive Growing up in the Midwest in the 1980s, Erica Mather never felt like she fit in. “I was tall, busty, and brunette, where blondes were the norm,” she remembers. Under pressure to perform as an athlete and to conform to what she saw in women’s magazines, “my mind got out of control and imagined grotesque bodily flaws where I had none,” she says. “I started to eat to manage my emotions, and over-exercised compulsively to attempt to control my body.” It wasn’t until she found yoga in her mid-20s that she began to heal from body dysmorphia—with the additional help of therapy, strong friendships, and the passage of time. “I began rehabbing my relationship with my body and with all it contains and all it is capable of—feelings, thoughts, emotions, and Spirit,” says Erica. She became a senior Forrest Yoga teacher, and created the Adore Your Body System and The Yoga Clinic, where students, teachers, and health professionals can learn about self-care for the body. “At its best, yoga teaches us to be present with what is real, now, and gives us the tools to skillfully engage with and handle what is real, now,” Erica says. In the context of body image, that means embracing your body as it is, without striving to create change. Yoga can be a powerful ally in that process, when taught and practiced with compassion and awareness. Inspired by the growing conversation about body image in

the yoga community, Erica launched the inaugural Adore Your Body Telesummit last year. She brought together presenters from the fields of yoga and health, as well as the feminist and body positivity movements, to share their stories and their techniques for changing the way we think about our bodies. The summit drew more than 700 people, and prompted Erica to envision a live event focused on yoga to promote body positivity—a gathering that would encompass the voices of yoga teachers and practitioners of all shapes, sizes, ages, ethnicities, and abilities. DON’T MISS Yoga and Body Thus was born the Yoga Confidence: Acceptance, and Body Confidence Positivity, and Empowerment: event, which takes place November 13–17; see page 83. at Kripalu this fall, featuring keynotes from Cyndi Lee and Seane Corn, along with panel discussions, interactive exercises, yoga, meditation, and Q&A. Personal stories from three of the program presenters are featured on these pages. “I believe that every person’s story about their relationship with their body is part of the fabric of truth that makes up the human experience,” Erica says. “I wanted to make a space to begin to have these conversations about body positivity.”

Yoga was a game-changer in my recovery from an eating disorder. It helped me beat a disease that nearly ended my life. As a moving meditation, yoga taught me to recognize and respond to my body’s needs, cope healthfully with difficult emotions, and treat my body with compassion. As a holistic practice, yoga also connected me with a community and sense of purpose that infused my life with meaning and helped me beat the disease for good. But I think it’s important to mention that the culture surrounding yoga in this country can also exacerbate food and body image challenges. Yoga must be taught and practiced with mindfulness and compassion, or else it can become one more tool we use to numb our feelings and try to fix a body that was never broken to begin with. Chelsea Roff is an internationally recognized author, speaker, and the founder and director of Eat Breathe Thrive™.

I grew up in a small town outside of Toronto with black immigrant parents, making me different from everyone else in every possible way. For most of my life, I felt like an outsider, an ugly duckling, and simply not good enough in comparison to the rest of my small world. The images and conversations that bombarded me reinforced my connection to these feelings of isolation and inferiority. The action that brought me peace and understanding of myself and the world around me was yoga. I started a practice with my mom at the age of 3. It developed into what would become my dharma. Yoga is my passion, and sharing yoga with EVERY BODY is my mission. Yoga for All is about breaking down the barriers that keep us from noticing our true greatness. Yoga is in all of us, and is for all of us; it is time to make it so. Dianne Bondy is a celebrated yoga teacher, social justice activist, founder of Yogasteya, and a leading voice of the Yoga for All movement.

By the time I took my first yoga class, my body had already endured two decades of ridicule for being too big, too curvy, or just not the right body type for particular spaces that little girls often dream of fitting into. Why would yoga be any different? After all, I only saw maybe one or two women of color on the cover of a particular yoga publication I obsessed over before building the nerve to attend that first class. Moments before the instructor walked in, flashbacks from my childhood and the experiences that contributed to my relationship with my body convinced me that my presence in this space was a mistake. Today, in my second decade of practicing yoga and teaching in communities, my body is still challenged by those who are not accustomed to seeing full-body types move in certain ways. Similar to the critiques placed on my body as a young gymnast and later as a cheerleader, I continue to encounter reminders that my body may always be questioned. My yoga practice teaches me acceptance and that my body is not an inconvenience or a burden, but rather an opportunity to reclaim my position in any space I choose to occupy. Chelsea Jackson Roberts is a yoga educator who works with marginalized and underserved populations and serves on the Yoga and Body Image Coalition. A longer version of her story appears in Yoga and Body Image: 25 Personal Stories about Beauty, Bravery, and Loving Your Body.

DAKINI’S HEART-ESSENCE CHÖD

THE YOGA OF LUCID DREAMING

FOR everyone.

FOR all levels.

Healing Chöd is an ancient Buddhist ritual known for its power to alleviate physical, emotional, and mental illness and suffering. There are no instructions to follow or techniques to learn. One simply lies down, rests, and receives healing. Healing Chöd is suitable for everyone, including those with chronic or mild illnesses.

Mangalam Svapna Yoga is an ancient Buddhist practice that transforms sleep into an opportunity for personal insight and spiritual growth. Practiced in Tibetan monasteries for more than 1,000 years, these practical techniques induce lucid dreams through a series of meditative visualizations practiced while falling asleep. Once mastered, these techniques can be used to improve sleep quality, receive spiritual teachings while dreaming, and develop insights into the nature of life, death, rebirth, and awakening.

Healing Chöd rituals consist of music, prayers, and mantras in the sacred sounds of Sanskrit and Tibetan, transformative mudras and offerings, and meditation to cut through the destructive emotions and repel negative energies and obstacles. Empowerments are given to further increase healing blessings.
