How can SCiO Cup help transform your operation?
Ensure consistent dry matter and adjust rations in real time.
Maximize feed efficiency and boost your bottom line.
Measure green chop and forage, dry hay, high moisture and dry shelled corn and more.
Adjust for weather events.
Plan optimal silage harvesting time.
Get results in seconds
Track results for year-after-year improvement ACCURATE Calibrated against state-of-the-art lab tests
Test the forage on a daily/weekly basis and particularly after a rain or snow event to adjust the ration and ensure constant dry matter intake
Test before chopping or when buying forage to make sure it arrives with the right dry matter value
Variations between the Koster, SCiO Cup and the Lab will happen from time to time due to non-homogeneity and the variations in the di erent test methods. A study of 31 samples across multiple calibrations compared the results of the SCiO Cup to the results of the Koster. Both methods were good predictors of the Laboratory results and showed very little di erence in accuracy.
Forage is a mix of leaves, stalks, stems, grains, etc and each of these have a di erent dry matter content Because forage is non-homogenous, when taking samples, each sample will have the various plant materials in di ering quantities and the overall dry matter content will vary accordingly
To demonstrate this point, we ran an experiment. We took a large sample of forage, mixed it up and broke it into 10 sub-samples, which were sent to the Lab for analysis This experiment was repeated across 5 farms The di erence between the minimum and maximum dry matter values are plotted below
On average the variations between SCiO Cups is expected to be smaller than the di erences seen between the Lab and the SCiO Cup. However, when comparing di erences between any two specific cups (as opposed to a SCiO Cup being compared against an average of multiple devices) the di erences seen can statistically be similar to variation seen between the SCiO Cup and the Koster or Lab. A study of 49 samples of various materials, scanned with two di erent SCiO Cups showed a slightly improved, albeit similar standard deviation to the analysis above comparing the SCiO Cup to the Lab.
The Lab results indicate that without perfect mixing to create a homogenous sample there can be sections that show a 3 point variation in dry matter
