WELCOME Dear Parents and Students, The Jr./Sr. Faculty is so excited for J-Term 2018! We have revamped our course offerings this year and we are pleased with the eclectic range of options for our students.

J-Term is a chance to explore, to be creative, and to engage in non-traditional learning. All of our J-Term courses will be taught from a biblical worldview and will be challenging.

If you are in high school, I highly recommend that you look into the internship option. The students last year had an awesome experience learning about their chosen careers. The experience really confirmed their desire to pursue a particular path. Begin the process of seeking an internship soon! I?m certain that you will not regret it!

J-TERM REGISTRATION Dear Parents and Students, I am so excited to experience my first J-Term with Madison Christian School. I have heard so many great things about the program from various teachers and staff.

We had a J-Term at the Mount Vernon Nazarene University, where I attended, and it was filled with a variety of different experiences and opportunities for us to take part in. Everything that I hear about the Madison Christian J-Term sounds very similar to what we had at MVNU. I have the awesome opportunity to head up the internship section of J-Term this year. Getting experience in a field that you are interested in before starting college is invaluable. It allows the students to see if that career is something that they want to continue to pursue or if they should consider something else.

J-Term, as a whole, is a great chance for the students to get a better understand of a possible career path for them. If they have question about their next steps on the path or want to explore other opportunities, please have them meet with me. My office door is always open!

INTERNSHIPS Internships scheduled during our J-Term are a unique opportunity for our 9th-12th grades to observe and experience a working professional?s life for two weeks. This experience in the world of adult realities allows them to see the time lawyers do not spend in a courtroom, to discover the patience required to teach second grade or to observe the precision required to be an engineer or research scientist. These experiences can aid in major decisions the students are currently facing and more importantly in the discovery of how God has uniquely equipped them. Even internships that do not turn out as expected can be a valuable tool in the discovery process.

To participate in J-Term as an intern is a privilege that involves significant responsibility on the part of the student. Remember, the internship is a formally structured learning experience that starts before the first day ?on the job?.

JUNIOR HIGH

Instructors will be incorporating this verse and the hit song from the classic 80s film, Footloose.

With these principles students will not only be studying worship and dance in scripture, but also be learning an exciting and dynamic dance routine.

Students will know an exciting dance routine. Students will gain an understanding of the beliefs behind dance in scripture. Students will learn how to work together in a group setting. Students will be able to stay active while also furthering their knowledge of dance.

ANTI-AMERICAN HISTORY Instructor | Mr. Tim Allen

Description | Anti-American history is a course to educate students about the origins of the "anti-American narrative." This is the belief that America is an imperialistic and oppressive nation that has fought its way to the top at the expense of the world, including its own citizens. This view of history is intentionally distorted, or misguided at best.

Students will use primary sources and modern textbooks (available online with the material needed for this course) to compare and contrast the historically accurate story of America's past with the currently presented narrative. Do they agree or disagree?This is for students to decide. Also used are clips from the documentary "America" by Dinesh D'Souza.

Objectives | Identify several of the 'cases' against American democracy and capitalism.

Know the historical basis (or lack thereof) for a victimized American history. Understand the origins of the anti-American narrative. Analyze and debate opposing viewpoints.

Formulate a defendable position to the question "Should America continue to exist?"

Description | Can?t Stop the Feeling! explores the fields of marketing, communications & sales and the impact these fields have on our perception of reality. Students will have the chance to explore how our world is daily constructed and shaped through visual imagery and sound bites. These worldview messages influence the way we think, the purchases we make and the actions we take. Students will be given opportunities to think critically about their world and will leave with techniques to avoid the trap of these secular influences.

Objectives | Students will be given a behind-the-scenes look at the machine that produces consumerism. Students will develop a better understanding of marketing, communications and sales. Students will be given the tools to better filter secular, worldview messages. Students will explore techniques to responsibly engage with all types of media. Students will find positive, ethical approach towards approaching these career choices.

Description | Students will learn basic aerodynamics, physics, and techniques of flight through lecture, experimentation, videos, and many hands-on activities. Students will build some simple gliders / airplanes. A trip to Rickenbacker Air National Guard is planned and is expected to include time in a flight simulator and inspection of several aircraft.

Objectives | Students will examine basic flight controls and flight instruments. Students will learn features of aircraft and engine design and function to gain an understanding of advantages, disadvantages, and purpose of various designs and construction.

Description | Students will receive the opportunity to become a man of God. Students will participate in a bible study focusing on the aspects of being a young man following Christ. Students will participate in discussions on how to lead a moral life. Students will also get to participate in fun activities such as: learning how to use tools, changing a tire, and learning how to tie a tie.

MCSI - MADISON CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION Instructor | Mrs. Kim Miller

Limit | 10 Students

Description | MCSI is an exploration of forensics, including fingerprint analysis, handwriting analysis, chemical analysis of unknown substances, hair analysis, glass fragment density, chromatography, soil analysis as well as others. Students will also explore how the brain processes visual information and determine the pros and cons of eyewitness accounts. After exploring these areas with hands-on discovery learning and presentation of scientific and historical data, students will apply their knowledge and skill to gather and analyze data in a mock crime scene. Students will also participate in a discussion supporting the reliability of the Gospel accounts through forensic evidences.

Critical thinking and collaboration will be the foundational skills students will use in this experience.

Objectives | Students will use critical thinking to solve real world problems. Students will compare and contrast the effectiveness of different forensic techniques. Students will demonstrate basic forensic analysis of unknown data using scientific analysis and deductive and inductive reasoning. Students will explore the reliability of the Gospel through a deeper understanding of forensic analysis. Students will collaborate effectively.

Description | It is never to early to start understanding how to be good stewards of the monetary blessings God has given us. Students will research a job and using that salary we will discuss how they create a budget, make car and house payments, go grocery shopping, and ultimately keep a balanced checkbook. We will bring back math lessons on sales tax, gratuity, and discounts and do more applications. If time allows we may also look into the stock market.

Students will know how to budget their money. Students will know how taxes and withholding shape their take home amount. Students will learn how to be good stewards of their money.

Description | Sewing - basic hand stitches and pillow kits sewn together on sewing machines.

Objectives | Learning about different sewing supplies and what they are used for.

Instruction of basic hand sewing techniques and how to sew on buttons. Using hand stitching to create pillows from kits. Introduction to use of a sewing machine. Completing the pillows on the sewing machine.

Description | This course examines the nation of Thailand and it's culture. Students will learn a little bit of the language, sports, food, the structure of their society, and how to witness to a Buddhist culture. The class will also visit a Muay Thai gym and eat at a local Thai restaurant.

Objectives | To show culture differences between Asian and American societies. To help students experience cuisine, martial arts, and language from Thailand. To help students be more cultural sensitive to an area that is very different from ours. A PLAY IN EIGHT DAYS Instructors | Dr. Waverly Wilkerson

Description | The students will write, plan, rehearse and perform a play in eight days.

Objectives | The students will learn to write a script for a short play. The students will audition and decide the cast and crew from among the class members. The students will rehearse themselves for seven days and perform on the eighth day. The students will gather props and scenery for the stage, using their imagination in order to make things work in a short amount of time.

ANCIENT GREEK LANGUAGE & CULTURE Instructor | Mr. Joshua Harris

Description | Take a trip through time to one of the most innovative cultures in history!

This course is designed to introduce you to the ancient Greeks. Learn the basics of the language spoken by Homer, Plato, and Paul, explore the social and political features of the Greek city-states, and delve into the classic myths that captivated the ancient mind.

Objectives | Students will be able to produce and pronounce the Greek alphabet. Students will be able to translate 1st and 2nd declension Greek nouns and present tense verbs.

Students will be able to recite their favorite Bible verse in Greek. Students will be able to describe the political situation of ancient Greece.

Description | Students will spend their efforts learning to use two (three if time allows) of the most popular coding languages in use across a large portion of the web. These coding languages are also some of the most in-demand programming languages in today's job market.

Objectives | Students will learn the basics of coding with Python. Students will use Python to code increasingly difficult small projects. Students will use Python to code a final project. Students will learn the basics of using Java. Students will use Java to code increasingly difficult small projects. Students will spend some time learning the basics of JavaScript (if time allows, this also includes some small projects as well).

Description | This class was designed to provide a space and opportunity for students to explore local colleges. We will spend time researching and visiting local universities as well as learning about financial aid and common application questions. The class will need transportation each day and chrome books for each student. When not visiting a school, we will discuss financial aid, researching techniques, personal goals and essay writing. The students will begin an application for at least two schools.

Objectives | Students will be able to start at least two college applications. Students will be able to understand the missions of several local Ohio universities. Students will be able to explain the basics of FASFA. Students will be able to experience campus life of multiple colleges. FILM NOIR : DETECTIVES, DAMES & DANGER Instructors | Mr. Ryan Pettit

Description | Students will become familiar with film noir?its context (World War II and post-war America, c. 1944-54), its themes/philosophy and genre characteristics (including stock characters, set lighting, camera angles, visual language/symbols, etc.) originating in hard-boiled detective fiction. We will read one or more short stories or excerpts of hard-boiled fiction. We will watch such noteworthy noir films as The Maltese Falcon, Out of the Past, Scarlet Street, The Asphalt Jungle, and Double Indemnity with an eye to identifying the ways in which they embody or deviate from the ?ideal?film noir.

Objectives | Gain an understanding of what makes a movie "film noir." Consider film noir as an expression of the wider culture of the time. Learn to interpret the visual language/symbolism of film noir. Learn to identify a story's philosophy from plot and character clues.

HOW TO GET THE JOB OR SCHOOL YOU WANT! Instructor | Mr. John Wilson

Description | After 20+years in the personnel field I have see just about every type of interview situation and how best to handle it. I have also seen almost every mistake that can be made. I've hired and fired and counseled employees. We will put all of that to use in this course. I plan to use a combination of materials, from videos to role-playing to work with students to improve their presentation skills. This can be of use to either Jr High students as they look to the future or Sr. High students as they are currently interviewing.

Objectives | Students will learn skills for interviewing. Students will learn how to best present themselves. Students will be able to understand common interview mistakes to avoid. Students will utilize role playing to improve their interviewing skills. Students will be able to use the skills in other situations- public speaking etc.

INTRO TO METEOROLOGY Instructors | Mr. Hunter Greene

Description | A first look at various aspects of meteorology including hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, cloud types, winter precipitation, global circulations, weather instruments/models, storm chasing, and environmental issues/debates. We will also examine extreme weather events including The Flood from Genesis, and discuss how they happened. Activities include outdoor observation, recording data using weather instruments, researching famous severe weather events, watching famous weather videos/movies, composing a weather forecast, and presenting a weather forecast to the public (other students).

Objectives | Students will define layers of the atmosphere and cloud types. Students will differentiate between precipitation types and frontal types. Students will discuss earth-sun relationships (seasons) and their influence on weather and climate. Students will explore various severe weather types and discuss safety responses to weather hazards.

SLAVERY: PAST & PRESENT Instructor | Mrs. Jo Anne Kelly

Description | The students will learn about the life of a typical African-American slave in pre-1860s United States through the reading of Frederick Douglass's Autobiography of an American Slave over Christmas break. We will discuss the book and view a video of Douglass's life. Two field trips are planned --first to Columbus's Kelton House (a link on the Underground Railroad) followed by a beverage at Roosevelt Coffee (whose profits help human trafficking victims) and then to the National Underground Railroad/Freedom Center in downtown Cincinnati. The Cincinnati museum also contains a special exhibit on modern day slavery. Prior to the Cincinnati museum visit, students will read and discuss excerpts from Disposable People by Kevin Bales, a professor of sociology and the world's leading expert on contemporary slavery. Students will end the course by performing a service project for one of the Columbus agencies serving victims of human trafficking.

Objectives | Develop an awareness and understanding of what the typical African American slave experienced in the early days of our country. Read Frederick Douglass's powerful story of his life as a slave and his hard-won eventual freedom. This book is on nearly every list as a book which students should read prior to college. Develop an awareness and understanding of contemporary worldwide slavery. Develop a commitment to serve those less fortunate through working on a service project for one of the Columbus agencies serving victims of human trafficking.

Description | This course will analyze the standard American diet and the effects it has on the body. We will be studying health and nutrition to prepare young people to make wise, healthy decisions about their Temples (bodies). As believers, we are called to take care of our bodies so we may be effective in ministry. During this course, we will be going to Planet Fitness to learn about how to incorporate a regular fitness routine. We will also be going to the supermarket to select foods to prepare healthy lunches that will enjoy together.

Objectives | Students will learn about the pitfalls of the standard American diet. Students will gain an understanding of how proper food choices can prevent and heal certain diseases. Students will explore a fitness routine that they can easily incorporate into their lives. Students will make healthy choices in the grocery store. Students will learn how to make healthy, delicious foods.

THRIFY THREADS Instructors | Mrs. Sarah Gaal

Description | The purpose of the Thrifty Threads class is to teach students how to wisely use the money that God has entrusted to them. After completing the in-class activities and receiving teacher instruction, they would have the tools and knowledge necessary to design and acquire an outfit and even a wardrobe at a fraction of the typical retail cost.

We would be using the Bible, the computer lab, online shopping tools, online mapping tools, and Microsoft Excel. During the class, students would learn how to do a cost analysis and a simple budget. The class would include a thrift store field trip and in-class fashion show in which students would model their deeply discounted outfit in person or compile a photo collage of the items that they would acquire at online retailers.

Objectives | Students will have to demonstrate the ability to apply logical thinking to break down a complex problem into parts and solve it. Students will use computers as a tool to compute the cost of items compared to other comparable items. They will evaluate percentages and values. Students will plan and evaluate how to spend money and forecast potential costs and expenses. Students will design an outfit that appeals to their personal style and expresses their own distinct look.

Description | What will you discover about your past?What mysteries lie within your family's history?Using the powerful resources of Ancestry.com, Fold3.com, and Newspapers.com you can unravel the secrets of your family past. You will learn how to construct a family tree, research various types of historical records, and be amazed at the legacy you have been given. Did you have ancestors on the Mayflower?Did your family fight for the North or South in the Civil War?From where and when did your family immigrate to the United States?Explore your past and find out more of who you are.

Objectives | Learn how to search and interpret information on historical documents.

Create a complete (as possible) family tree as far back as you can go based on historical records. Utilize and interpret the reliability of historical evidence to support or disprove theories about your family?s history. Utilize the resources mentioned above to reconstruct your family?s ?story?. Create a family tree & timeline presentation about your findings during the class and present them on the last day of J-Term. Appreciate your family heritage & share your findings with your family.

FAQS Are all students required to pick something?

Do the J-term on-campus educational classes have a cost?

Yes, all students are required to participate in J-Term, as it will be mandatory for graduation.

The classes offered here at MCSduring J-Term will range in opportunities and experiences. The cost of the classes will also vary depending on the supplies, materials and transportation required for the class. There are some free classes.

Will J-Term increase my tuition?

J-Term will not increase your tuition, as it is part of the school year, but depending on the opportunity one selects, a fee to cover the travel or supplies will be assessed.

Is f inancial aid available f or J-term?

No, there is not financial aid for J-Term.

Do I have to do an internship during J-Term?

No, you do not have to do an internship during J-Term, but it is recommended.

This is an opportunity to have a deeper and richer J-Term experience.

Will courses be ?second-rate? to the internships?

Will the atmosphere be a little ?f reer? than the normal school day?

Yes. The courses will be fun, different and unique. Our hope and desire is that J-Term classes will provide yet another opportunity to deepen and develop the student/ teacher relationships, a distinctive of an MCSeducation, while affording everyone a learning opportunity that is unique and life enriching. This time will be a time for exploration, experimentation, and non-traditional learning in which the students and teachers will further develop an interest in a particular area, as well as continue to forge the deep relationships that are core to what we do here at MCS.

No, the classes will be of high quality, and they will be taught by our excellent faculty and parent volunteers.

Can you select your own internship?

Yes, students are encouraged to pursue the internship that interests them the most. There will be an application process, internship requirements and a contract that must be signed by the student, parents, business and school. If a student has a difficult time securing an internship, the Jr./Sr. High School office will assist the student with the process.

How do we f ind about internship opportunities?

Identify what it is that you are interested in pursuing as a potential career, and locate businesses in the Columbus area that would be a potential fit with your interest. Make contact with the business to express your interest in an internship.

This may take several attempts, but be persistent. If you have difficulty finding an internship, contact Mrs. Jones or Mr. Current and they will assist with finding a suitable internship.

How will you keep accountability f or the internship program?What will be required of these students?

Students participating in the Internship component of J-Term will have to complete a minimum of 36 hours, keep and publish a nightly journal, participate in online discussions with other students participating in internships, and attend an Internship Breakfast the last day of J-Term.

Are there limits to group sizes as well as minimums?

There are limits on the size of the groups.

Students will schedule their J-Term classes online with Juniors and Seniors given priority scheduling. There will be additional deadlines for each class.

Are we taking time away f rom the academic year f or our high school students? What about the AP students ? are they losing time in class?

The school calendar and student activities during the year have been adjusted to maximize class time for the high school students. Regarding AP classes and scores, teachers will adjust their courses accordingly, but other schools that have an established J-Term program report that there is not a noticeable or significant difference in scores with the implementation of a J-Term into their curriculum.

How is J-term credit given and what happens if the weather is horrible or most of the session is missed because of weather or illness?What if my child gets sick and misses school days during J-Term?

J-Term credit will be given after the successful completion of the two-week J-Term period.

Should there be school cancellations due to weather the requirements for the J-Term will be appropriately amended. In the event of a prolonged illness, the student will be required to make up the missed classes to receive credit. Illnesses will be handled the same as during the regular school year and accommodations will be made for extenuating circumstances.

CREDITS Each completed course earns credit towards graduation. J-Term grades are Pass/Fail and will not be factored into the student GPA.

ATTENDANCE It is important to attend school during J-Term. Students that normally sign out early will not be permitted to do so for J-Term. Refund will not be given for students missing J-Term. Make-up time will be required for student absences during J-Term.

CONFLICTS Please honor your commitments to sports and fine arts programs by choosing J-Term options that do not force you to miss practices and games.

SCHEDULE Morning Session: 8:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

Evening Session: 12:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
