Grammar
Used to, didn’t use to
We use ‘used to’ for something that happened regularly in the past but no longer happens. • Ben used to travel a lot in his job but now, since his promotion, he doesn’t. • I used to walk to school but now I take the bus.
We also use it for something that was true but no longer is. • There used to be a cinema in the town but now there isn’t. • She used to have really long hair but she’s had it all cut off. • I didn’t use to like him but now I do.
‘Used to do’ is different from ‘to be used to doing’ and ‘to get used to doing’. Negative The negative of used to is most commonly didn’t use to. It didn’t use to be so crowded in the shops as it is nowadays. In very formal styles, we can use the negative form used not to: She used not to live as poorly as she does now. Questions The most common form of question is auxiliary did + use to. I think we met once, a couple of years ago. Did you use to work with Kevin Harris?
