COURSE REFLECTION Engaging into the year with the knowledge of architecture explored through its codification of the roots of modernism, aesthetic ideals acquired from second-year Histories and Theories of Architecture. I was further intrigued and eager to further develop my understanding of architectural dynamic histories. The course served to widen the understanding of modernism, globalization, and specifically on the black experience and the challenges of injustice in the world throughout centuries of what shape portions of my understanding of what made today’s architectural dynamics. The course extended my critical thinking abilities and how to use them in trying to present my idea of architecture and shape my focus on how to use architecture to help change or shape the society and world I belong to.

COUNTER/ INSTITUTIONS

This was a group project which aimed to further learn, understand, and bring critical discussions on modernism, imperialism, and the exhibitionary complex. The assignment was based on research on case studies of cultural institutions that would develop the critical perception of contemporary curatorial practices in Africa and how they have tried to explore and re-mapped the black experience and the injustice that it has been challenged by in the world or country through centuries.

Group 4’s counter/ institution case study was Black Chalk & Co, a creative agency founded by Nontsikelelo Mutiti and Tinashe Mushakavanhu whose goal is to distribute the ideas and knowledge of African. The assignments explored and critically displayed our understanding and knowledge through the topics of colonization, the father figures, the growing diaspora, sense of displacement, and censorship of Zimbabweans. This research was tied together with the consistency works of Black Chalk & Co.

03 With the covid 19 pandemics that terrorizing throughout the course of the year, With the first-hand experience like-wise with most students, I was able to engage with the proposed essay assignment of which its aim was to ‘propose architectural parameters for liveable small spaces, through the redefinition of individual and collective rights’ in times of epidemics. With the finding of precedents and reflective mapping of my own confined space under lockdown, I developed a written dynamic explanatory of spatial standards that could help people to avoid epidemic traumas caused by a necessitated “stay in Place” order.

This was yet another group project of which its aim was to engage with the memory of Pancho Guedes and engage with one of his many projects in Johannesburg, the Sutton Close located on the Witwatersrand East campus.

With the knowledge of Pancho’s ‘spontaneous and undirected playfulness’, Afro, Neo-classical and modernist approach created in spaces located in between Wits’ academic buildings, we explored the idea of re-imagining the spaces and created an in-context to Johanessburg event that relatable to Pancho’s font
