A BLACK BIRD

Twelve-year old Želja is in mourning over her beloved father, who died in an accident. She believes that she’s misunderstood and withdraws into herself and spends more time at the cemetery. There she thinks she can sense her father’s violin music and soon encounters a strange young man, Vuk. He turns out to be a ghostly creature who is able to guide Želja into the world beyond.

In her debut children’s book Aleksandra Jovanović (b 1996) succeeds in tracing the grief of a young girl and the rejection she experiences from family and friends. By letting the realistic plot slide into a suspenseful fantastic setting, she marks out the moment of healing for the main character.

This humorous and intriguing trilogy in a diary form is about the new favourite teenage couple, Nina and Max. In the first book Max and Nina find themselves separated from the rest of their families due to the state of emergency. As new computer virus spreads among humans, the two teenagers have to get by and survive on their own for a couple of weeks which brings them closer together. In the second book, the central plot is Max’s birthday that happens that very summer after the pandemics. Nina and her best friend Vera go to the party with great expectations but something entirely different awaits them there. The final sequel of the story about Max and Nina is about the first steps of the teenage band they are members of – their first concerts but also the awareness of the ecological issues and environmental activism.

Jasminka Petrović (b. 1960) has written over 30 books for children and youth. Some of her books were translated into 25 languages and some of them were adapted into plays both in Serbia and abroad. She worked as an editor of a radio show for teenagers, wrote articles for diverse magazines for children and youth, and worked as an editor of the National Geographic Junior in Serbian. She has participated in various programs and projects which stimulate children’s imagination and creativity. She is one of the key organizers of the children’s literary festival Krokodokodil. She is also one of the founders of the Movement for improvement of the children’s culture Ura kultura. Jasminka finds the inspiration for her books in conversations with children. She also gets a lot of support from her family and friends. She is the most award winning author of children’s books in Serbia.
