PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Family and Friends: Congratulations to our 2012-2013 Juan De Jesus Vigil Family Foundation Scholarship recipients: Andrew Apodaca, Tyler Constance Elliott, Sarah Oates, Kalee Salazar and Adam Vigil. Their goals and aspirations make all of our work worthwhile. More importantly, these young people insure that the Juan De Jesus Vigil Family legacy gets stronger with each passing generation. During the past 6 month a great deal has happened:  We awarded five $1,000 college Scholarships for the 20122013 school term.  We are now posted on Face Book, thanks to Andrea Romero.  We also continue to fund Certificate programs and single course grants.  We continue to update and up-grade our website under the direction of Carolyn Romero.  We sponsored a Beginners Genealogy Course at the Denver Public Library, thanks to Phillip Vigil.  We are planning our next Annual Juan De Jesus Family Foundation Memorial Golf Tournament, under the direction of Carl Salazar and a silent auction under the direction of Mimi Vigil. We have a special note of appreciation to the family of Joseph Hattan. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Juan de Jesús Vigil Family Foundation and many contributions were received. Joe Hattan was the husband of Lillian Vigil, father/grandfather of Vigil Foundation Board members Carolyn and Andrea Romero. Thank you and please accept our deep condolences. 1

Our next project is the Annual Juan De Jesus Vigil Family Foundation, Memorial Golf Tournament and Cook Out. THIS IS A GREAT EVENT FOR A GREAT CAUSE. In order to meet our goal of 100 golfers we need all the help we can get. You can help by golfing yourself, sponsoring a single golfer and /or a team of four. Also, you could ask a company that you know or do business with to sponsor a foursome. Since we are a non-profit, many companies are happy to support these types of events based on our IRS 501 (3) c status. Those who are not interested in golfing should come to the BBQ and reconnect with the family. We will have a silent auction, too. If you cannot come to the picnic – and even if you can, please consider donating an item for the silent auction. On behalf of the Board of Directors it is my privilege and honor to thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

John H. Vigil 2nd FAMILY QUILT

The 1st family quilt that was auctioned in 2010 was a terrific success. We are looking for people willing to donate a 12“ x 12“ square for a Vigil Family quilt. It will be raffled as part of the 2015 Reunion activites.

Julia Walker Romero was the lucky winner of the 1st quilt.

Be creative. You can applicaque, embroider, machine stitch.... Be creative. The square can be about your family, hobbies, history. Please make sure that you leave 1“ around the edge for the quilting process.

We realize that this is an early request, but it takes time to make a great quilt. Send completed squares to Carolyn Romero at 3068 W. 11th Avenue Circle, Broomfield, CO 80020. I will accumulate the squares

and arrange to have the squares quilted. If you want to help with quilting the final project, please let me know. 2012 GOLF TOURNAMENT and BBQ

Save the Date!!!! On Sept 15, 2012, we will be holding our next Golf Tournament at the Applewood Golf Course in Golden, Colorado where we will again be provided with a great facility and course for us to continue building our scholarship programs. Golf will be followed by a BBQ and silent auction. Please “SAVE THE DATE.” Reservations will need to be made by September 5th. Education is the one path to success that can provide our family members with opportunities to become successful business owners, community leaders, politicians, professionals, and active citizens. We cannot do this alone; we need a concerted effort from everyone to make this happen. So please be generous in your consideration of 2012 Annual Memorial Golf Tournament. REUNION 2015 UPDATE

We will begin planning the 6th Vigil Family Reunion for the summer of 2015 this next fall. We need your help to plan this fun event. Where should we host the next reunion. So far we have been in Albuquerque, Denver, Trinidad and Taos. If you have a suggestion for where we should host the next reunion, or are interested in joining the planning committee, please send your suggestions/contact information to John Vigil at JHVigil1440@msn.com.

WE NEED YOUR RECIPES For the 2nd Edition of the Vigil Family Cook Book. Please send them to Andrea Romero at 2301 Ryeland Ct; Ft. Collins, CO 80526 or email to Andrea at AndreaRomero019@gmail.com. 2

FOUNDATION UPDATE

FOUNDATION BOARD WANTS YOU!

The Foundation is searching for three more board members who are willing to make a difference in the lives of the descendants of Juan de Jesús Vigil through the gift of education and youth leadership. We need people – age is not a consideration - who are just willing to just get involved. We really need help with maintaining the website. Call Carl Salazar at (303) 429-4105 for send an email to csalazar@comcast.net for information.

In June 2012, as a result of the successful reunion and your generous contributions, we awarded 5 more scholarships. Kalee Salazar is attending the University of Colorado – Boulder majoring in Environmental Studies and Ethnic Studies.

ASPIRE TO INSPIRE

Andrew Apodaca is attending his 2nd year at Red Rocks Community College studying to be a Sports Trainer.

It gives me great pleasure to inform the Juan de Jesús Vigil Foundation members that twelve of our members attended the genealogy/family history class at the Denver Public Library on June 9, 2012.

Sarah Oates is continuing her education at Central New Mexico Community College and is enrolled in the Nursing program.

Lou-Jean Rehm, a certified genealogist, conducted an interesting and informative account defining the basic concepts of understanding genealogy.

Adam Vigil continues to attend the University of Colorado, Denver studying International Business.

What I really got out of the presentation was: "A tree with no roots cannot stand,” and that is why I encourage our families to get involved in genealogy and preserve family history. I hope the session will encourage each of the attendees to get organized into learning more about their ancestors and even consider writing family history.

Tyler Elliott is attending Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, studying Civil Engineering.

***** NON-DEGREE GRANT PROGRAM The Juan de Jesús Vigil Family Foundation has added grants for people who are not attending full degree programs. The grant committee will meet quarterly to approve requests for funding for Certificate programs or for individual classes to help the applicants increase their job skills. VIGIL POETS

The Other Side of the Mountain

My Dad

By: Florida Vigil

By: Dennis Hattan

On the other side of the mountain way down below, in a peaceful valley where the skies are blue, the wild flowers grow so free. Little Angels run and play to their hearts content. They form a circle and hold hands as they sing and dance without a care. Laughter rings as they skip through fields of fragrant flowers. They wade in the water that flows so pure from the stream above. They can see their reflections as the water lights up like a diamond. They smile so sweetly as they enjoy the calm, cool water. They know this is truly a place of great beauty. The breeze feels so magical as raindrops fall from the sky. A rainbow appears in the heavens, a sign that God is watching over them. As the day ends, they know God awaits their return home.

He loved to wake up very early, start the day before most everyone He loved to eat home cooked dinners, afterwards he loved to read He loved to keep things in order, when it came to his own things He loved a good job with a challenge, always looking for another He loved a good party with family and friends, seeing his sisters and brothers He loved taking his boat out on the Ocean, he loved to navigate He loved to find new spots to go fishing, he loved when the fishing was great He loved to go to Happy Hour, down at the V.F.W you know Sit and joke and have a good time, it was his favorite place to go He loved my mom very dearly, and he loved all of us kids too And don’t you give it a second thought; I know that he loved you too So please Lord bring him home to thy house, forgive his sins oh Lord And please let us all join him there some day, so that he can love us once more For tomorrow is just another day and always more work to be done Go back to work and do what you do, that’s what my Dad would have done.
