6 | KINCOPPA KINCOPPALL –– ROSE ROSE BAY BAY SCHOOL SCHOOL OF OF THE THE SACRED SACRED HEART HEART

FROM THE PRINCIPAL I warmly welcome you to Kincoppal – Rose Bay, School of the Sacred Heart. A school that educates boys and girls from 3 years of age to the end of Year 6. From Year 7 to Year 12, we educate young women, offering day and boarding places. Our school setting, on the beautiful harbour at Rose Bay, creates a sense of serenity as a backdrop to learning. From our youngest students in the Early Learning Centre who experience the joy of nature on our unique campus, in their ‘Wildtime and Beachtime’, to our Boarders who can relax and unwind in their home away from home. As you walk the corridors, you are greeted by the sound of laughter, the thirst for greater knowledge and inquiry, and the obvious desire to do more, and be more. Our Chapel which is situated in the heart of the main building, and our Sacred Heart Goals which inform our practice, reminds us of our rich history while we embrace a contemporary learning environment. We belong to an International Sacred Heart network comprising 150 schools across 44 different countries. This unique network provides our students with the opportunities to take up exchanges as they learn how to live in different cultures. Moreover, our young people learn how to become globally minded citizens who are ready to embrace diversity and accept change. Our students have a deep sense of pride about belonging to this dynamic community and embrace all its traditions and initiatives. Such a sense of belonging in conjunction with our outstanding academic care has enabled our students to perform consistently well in their HSC results. It is only one measure of why KRB is such a special place to learn, and to be. Our alumnae continue to foster a deep connection with our community which highlights the significance of their journey. When our young men graduate from our Junior School and embark on their next stage of learning, they too remain connected to the community. They reflect upon how KRB has helped shape who they are in their formative years. Our Sacred Heart Educators focus on each individual and this philosophy helps foster in each student their strengths, their gifts and their desire to be the best version of themselves. We welcome the opportunity to forge authentic working partnerships with parents as we watch their children grow, develop and shine. I look forward to embarking on this rich and rewarding experience with you. Maureen Ryan Principal

A SACRED HEART SCHOOL The Society of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic teaching order, founded in France by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat in 1800. She was born in Joigny, France in 1779. In 1800, at the age of 21, Madeleine Sophie gave her vows with four other nuns of the Sacred Heart, with the goal of educating young women. Two years later she was made Superior, making her the leader of the Society after founding a school in Amiens, France. The Society of the Sacred Heart spread through France and received formal approval by Pope Leo XII in 1826. Madeleine Sophie opened over 100 houses and schools in twelve countries. Her vision and teachings remain a fundamental part of Sacred Heart education. In 1882 five sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart arrived in Sydney following the request of Archbishop Vaughan of Sydney to establish a school in his Diocese. By July of that year they opened a boarding school on the current site at Rose Bay. Kincoppal was established as a day school at Elizabeth Bay in 1909. Until the 1960s, the majority of staff members were religious. The first lay Principal, Chris Faisandier AM, was appointed in 1991 followed by Hilary Johnston-Croke in 2005 and our current Principal Maureen Ryan from 2018.

Schools of this global network are connected by a strong sense of community and the educational philosophy that stems from the vision of Madeleine Sophie, as articulated in the five goals of Sacred Heart education: • A Personal and Active Faith in God – Students are encouraged to reflect on their life experiences in the light of scriptures, to deepen the meaning of their lives. • A Deep Respect for Intellectual Values – We impart a love of learning. Students understand that learning involves many experiences beyond the classroom and that it is a life-long privilege. • The Building of Community as a Christian Value – We strive to provide a strong sense of community underpinned by Christian values and we encourage students to live as responsible citizens. • A Social Awareness which Impels to Action – We help students understand and appreciate differences in race, religion and culture, and we encourage them to act against oppression and injustice. • Personal Growth in an Atmosphere of Wise Freedom – We encourage students to be aware of their strengths and limitations and to recognise how they can make a difference.

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

At Kincoppal – Rose Bay, we provide the opportunity for students to go on exchange and, throughout the year, a number of students from Years 7 – 11 participate in the international exchange program. The exchange program enables Kincoppal – Rose Bay students to develop acceptance, maturity and independence and encourages them to gain an international perspective by visiting other Sacred Heart schools around the world. Exchanges present an ideal opportunity for our students to increase their knowledge and understanding of the Sacred Heart goals and assist in building community among Sacred Heart schools worldwide. The program is further enhanced by inviting international students, who are hosted by Kincoppal – Rose Bay families, to attend Kincoppal – Rose Bay and experience the Sacred Heart traditions in Sydney. Kincoppal – Rose Bay students have access to the network of Sacred Heart schools in countries including the United Kingdom, USA, France, Mexico, Japan, Austria, Italy, Spain, Canada and sister school in China.

HISTORY OF KINCOPPAL–ROSE BAY Kincoppal – Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart (KRB) is one of Australia’s leading Catholic independent schools that is part of the international network of Sacred Heart schools. It is one of a network of schools across 44 countries that were founded by the Society of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic religious order. The foundress of the Society, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, had a vision to educate the heart and mind of every child, a vision which is carried forward today in the goals of a Sacred Heart education. Each year the school focuses on one of the five goals of the Sacred Heart. In 2018 that goal is ‘A Social Awareness which Impels to Action’. Kincoppal and Rose Bay Convent were initially separate schools. The two schools were amalgamated to become Kincoppal – Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart in 1971. The original building was a private home called Claremont, built in 1851 and first leased by the School. It was later purchased by the Society of the Sacred Heart, and is still part of our School today. The School’s first permanent building was completed in 1888. The Chapel, designed by architect John Horbury Hunt, was completed in 1900. Since then, more buildings have been added to meet the changing educational needs of our growing school community. Our primary school was located in the main school building until 1951, when an adjoining property was purchased and replaced with the present Junior School in 1966.

OUR VISION & VALUES At Kincoppal – Rose Bay our vision is to provide a world-class Sacred Heart education for our students in our iconic location.

“COR UNUM” ONE HEART, ONE MIND The inspiration and focus of the School is embodied in our School’s motto meaning ‘one heart, one mind’. At Kincoppal – Rose Bay we strive for a ‘positive education’ of the whole student – educating both the Heart and the Mind as the School’s motto ‘Cor Unum’ suggests. We encourage our students to pursue their personal strengths, passions and talents; become independent and resilient, lifelong learners; develop empathy with others; and feel secure in their world with the belief that they have the capacity to transform it. We celebrate the richness of a school community that is global in nature. Our academic and co-curricular programs promote global awareness and social responsibility, with students encouraged to become alert to the world beyond their own lives and to act where the need exists. Kincoppal – Rose Bay is a School with a strong community spirit and an even stronger heart that remains committed to developing young women and men of integrity and compassion, who are equipped with a life-long love of learning.

POSITIVE EDUCATION

❤ Wellbeing and happiness at school and in their everyday lives ❤ A feeling of connectedness to the School and the broader community ❤ An appreciation of their strengths and potential to acquire new strengths

Students participate in a number of initiatives including: Bowraville Indigenous Camp, City Immersion, The Philanthropy Program and Antipodeans Abroad.

SOPHIE’S COTTAGE Sophie’s Cottage for three and four year old boys and girls is home for the youngest members of our school community. Named after Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, the Cottage operates as a long day care centre, 48 weeks of the year.

THE JOIGNY CENTRE At this Centre, located at the bottom of Barat – Burn Drive, our four-year-old boys and girls and their teachers are engaged in a unique educational journey. The Joigny Centre (Joigny is the birthplace of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat) contains places for learning and discovery, investigations and projects, all designed to engage eager explorers and thinkers. A combination of philosophies from the Sacred Heart tradition, Reggio Emilia and the Forest School bring the passions of highly trained educators and the uniqueness of each child together.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Barat-Burn is the home of our co-educational Junior School, providing girls and boys from Kindergarten to Year 6 with a warm and nurturing environment where they can further explore their interests and talents. In sharing one campus, Junior School students have ready access to Senior School facilities – science laboratories, music technology suites and sports facilities – and Senior School teachers in Languages, Science, PDHPE, Music and Mathematics. The strong relationship between Junior School and Senior School ensures our Junior School students benefit from our dedicated facilities and the extensive knowledge of our specialist teachers. We embrace the importance of co-education at Junior School level. Both boys and girls have an opportunity to grow and develop through their co-educational experience. Junior School Community Learning Spaces are designed for students to solve problems with their peers and develop critical thinking, creativity, abstract reasoning and self-esteem. Through hands-on learning, teachers encourage students to ask questions, to create and to work and interact well with others. BOARDING Boarding students have a strong presence in every aspect of school life and achieve strongly in all areas of their learning. A large percentage of boarders receive Year Scholar Awards and are the top achieving students in the Higher School Certificate. Boarders hold many leadership positions in the School and are actively engaged in all co-curricular activities, sports and leadership. Boarding is an integral part of Kincoppal – Rose Bay. Our boarding school of 150 senior school students is made up of country, city, indigenous and international students. They all contribute to the rich culture and diversity of the School.

ACTIVITIES The boarding house has a structured and supervised activity program so that each weekend there is at least one outing that provides those students staying in with an opportunity to enjoy and explore Sydney. Dances and social activities with other schools are also integral to life in the boarding school.

LEAVE Older students are offered the flexibility of dinner passes on weekend evenings, city passes for shopping and a four-hour movie pass on weekends. Boarding leave is flexible, enabling all boarders to spend time meeting and visiting family and friends.

CITY FAMILY SCHEME Year 7 boarders, are teamed with a Year 7 day student and their family. These families help new students adjust to living away from home and the boarders may be invited to spend the weekend with their city family. Many of these city families become a valuable support for parents living great distances away and develop strong friendships, which often continue past school years. EDUCATING HEARTS & MINDS | 21

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Kincoppal – Rose Bay welcomes students from Asia, PNG, Africa, the UK, USA and Europe, offering a world class Sacred Heart Catholic education in an iconic location. International students enrich our community and form lifelong friendships. Cultural Diversity week is an opportunity for our international students to share and celebrate their culture with the School. Our students appreciate a rich diversity of cultures and experiences that promote personal growth and active participation in a supportive community. Our internationality is key to ensuring that all of our students become global citizens – understanding the world outside their own.

SUPPORT In both the Junior and Senior Schools, opportunities exist for students whose first language is not English to attend specialist classes in English as a Second Language (ESL). Support is given by ESL-trained staff, who also work with the classroom teachers. Entry into the Senior School is dependent on the student having a suitable level of English to cope with mainstream classes. Assistance is also provided to help students and their parents feel part of the school community.

These events include annual celebrations of Mothers and Fathers Day and the biennial Spring Fair and help build friendships at a parent level which deepens our sense of community.

BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS At Kincoppal – Rose Bay we believe that the financial means of a family should not be a barrier to their children accessing and enjoying the benefits of a Sacred Heart education. Thanks to the generosity of the Kincoppal – Rose Bay community – alumnae, current and past parents – 60 students are supported by a needs-based bursary and each of those students contributes to the rich diversity of the School. Contributions to the bursary are made through donations, bequests and through fundraising activities. The Sr Philomene Tiernan rscj Boarding Bursary, for example, was made possible by the generosity of our community who donated over $1 million for this new Bursary. EDUCATING HEARTS & MINDS | 25

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS We focus on providing world class educational facilities within a much loved heritage environment. In 2008 the School Board adopted the Master Plan 2008-2015 as the principal planning document to guide the future physical development of the School, and the planning document against which all future building programs would be considered. This was updated in 2013 with a detailed Junior School Master Plan and then consolidated into a Whole of Campus Master Plan Update in 2015. In 2011 Kincoppal – Rose Bay opened the Maureen Tudehope Centre as a space for the whole school to gather, and for assemblies, liturgies, visual arts, music, dance and drama performances, swimming and other sporting activities and community gatherings. Enhancements to Kincoppal – Rose Bay’s rich learning environment in recent years have included the Katherine Robertson Centre for Year 12 students, the Sister Philomene Tiernan rscj Learning Centre and senior community learning spaces, and the Stuart Centre for Year 7 students, designed to ease the transition into the Senior School. Work on the new Year 12 Learning Hub has commenced this year. The Master Plan for the Junior School provides a strategic approach to the upgrade of the Junior School over a number of years. The plan is to provide an outstanding learning environment for all our junior school students. The implementation has progressed with the opening of Sophie’s Cottage in 2016. In addition to the Master Plan, Kincoppal – Rose Bay has embarked on an extensive maintenance program to preserve and enhance the heritage significance of the campus.
