Chihuly Renewal Project The Beacon Gold Chandelier, by world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly, is one of only 10 Chihuly sculptures in the state of Michigan, and features 200 signature glass shapes including the horn, split leaf and Venetian leaf in bumblebee yellow. The Krasl Art Center dedicated the Beacon Gold Chandelier in 2000 to local resident Ed Conrad. As a highly distinguished banker and community leader, Ed served the Krasl Art Center for more than 25 years. Today, his commitment to the community continues to be a celebrated example of selfless service. In 2010, the lights illuminating the artwork began burning out with increasing frequency. It soon became clear that the lighting system had fulfilled its lifespan and needed to be upgraded in order to illuminate this magnificent sculpture for our community. Restoring the Beacon Gold Chandelier includes: • Deinstallation of the intricate sculpture by a team of Chihuly-certified art handlers • Installation of a new energy-efficient and long-lasting lighting system under the leadership of a lighting designer • Inspection of the rigging which secures the sculpture in place • Cleaning of each of the 200 individually blown glass shapes prior to its reinstallation This extensive process will take three weeks, during which time the Krasl Art Center must close its doors to the public from September 3 – 21, 2012

Message from the Director On Friday, May 11, the Krasl Art Center successfully and enthusiastically kicked off the collaborative Biennial Sculpture exhibition with our partners, the cities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, New Territory Arts Association and Box Factory for the Arts. The expanded sculpture party hosted over 700 individuals in one delightful evening. Tim Sizer of Timothy’s Restaurant both sponsored the exhibition and provided the exquisite food for the opening party. This year’s indoor exhibition is the ideal complement to the outdoor sculpture placement with preparatory drawings and maquettes on view in the galleries. You will not want to miss this year’s Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff. With record numbers of artists applying (900 artists from around the country) and the ranking of #24 in the nation, the Art Fair continues to be a key cultural and arts event in Southwest Michigan. Moreover, the Krasl Art Fair is estimated to attract 70,000 visitors to the region in a single weekend. Thank you to everyone who has generously contributed to the Chihuly Renewal Project. I am excited to announce that we have already raised half of the funds necessary for this unique project. When the new lights are turned on in September, the Beacon Gold Chandelier and the KAC will glow with the pride of knowing that our community supports this world class work of art. When you visit the KAC this summer you are sure to enjoy the lively voices of the KAC’s youngest visitors who are participating in classes and camps. It is our goal to go beyond simply providing studio art experiences for these students; we strive to engage them in critical thinking about the artwork on view and the creative process. In the Galleries 2012 Biennial Sculpture Invitational Indoor Exhibition: Through July 22, 2012 Outdoor Exhibition: Through August 31, 2013
On May 11th the Krasl Art Center celebrated the opening of the 2012 Biennial Sculpture Invitational. This exhibition series has been a proud part of our history since its inception in 1996. New in 2012, the exhibition expanded; 26 new sculptures were placed on the KAC grounds, at the Margaret B. Upton Arboretum along the St. Joseph River, at Lookout Park along Red Arrow Highway just south of Hilltop Road, in the Arts District of Benton Harbor and outside the Box Factory for the Arts on Broad Street in St. Joseph. The opening party was a great success with artists, entertainment, food and spirits at three differnt locations throughout the twin cities. THANK YOU to the cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor, the New Territory Arts Association and the Box Factory for the Arts for your partnership and support of this exhibition! Visit the Krasl Art Center galleries before July 22nd to view the indoor component of our Biennial Sculpture Invitational including preliminary drawings, models, photographs and footage illustrating the artist’s working processes. Join local sculptor Dave Wilkinson on the front lawn of the Krasl Art Center to observe an artist at work and possibly even try your hand at sculpture. The Summer Studio is an artist opportunity to work on-site at the Krasl Art Center throughout the summer of 2012; it provides dedicated time to create art and fosters positive networking for both the individual artist and the Krasl Art Center.
Energy Reboot: The Art of Indira Johnson July 27-September 2, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, July 27th, 5:30-7:30pm The topics of peace, personal and social responsibility and the sacredness of everyday life are important themes for artist Indira Johnson. Using a variety of materials, techniques and universal icons such as images of hands and feet, Indira creates sculptures and installations that are approachable and dynamic. Sometimes the works are playful or humorous, other times they are introspective; sometimes they are all three. Indira enjoys working with discarded objects and believes each object carries with it traces of its former identity. This former identity is transformed through the creation of the new artwork and takes on new life through its display. Born in Mumbai, India, Indira is the second of six girls. Her father was an artist who chronicled the work of Mahatma Gandhi and her mother was a social worker who assisted Mother Teresa in helping the poor. In fact, it was Mother Teresa who helped Indira leave her native India for higher education in the United States. Art and activism continue to weave throughout Indira’s life today. She is currently part of the Chicago-based multi platform public art and peace project titled Ten Thousand Ripples with the organization Changing Worlds and several other art, education, social and community organizations. Additionally, Indira is the founding director of the Shanti Foundation, an organization that teaches non-violent decision-making skills through art. Indira received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she met her husband, Karl. Early on, the two lived in various places, including India, Sweden and Colorado. Today, they live in Evanston, Illinois with a second home in Buchanan, Michigan.

September 21-November 4, 2012 Opening Reception: Friday, September 21 In 2012 we are celebrating sculpture at the Krasl Art Center and the key to this focus is our permanent collection. Through the creative foresight and benefaction of the KAC’s founders, we have collected sculpture for thirty years. Today, we have 37 sculptures in our collection on view between New Buffalo to South Haven. Learn about the individual artworks, the artists who made them and how they came to be in your backyard in this fascinating exhibition.

May 12 – September 29, 2012 Learn about the art in your community – including monuments along the bluff, sculpture in the KAC’s permanent collection and special biennial sculptures on view for a limited time only. Tours will begin at the stairs at Lake Bluff Park (intersection of Broad Street and Lake Boulevard) each Saturday at 2:00 pm. Tours last approximately 1 hour and will follow the bluff to the KAC. $3.00 suggested donation.

Birch Tree Forest by Katie Vota July 27-September 2, 2012
artlab Artist Talk: Thursday, July 26, 2012 Katie Vota wants to bring the outdoors in and create a sensory experience in the artlab that is like walking through a birch tree forest. Ever since she began working in paper as her predominant medium, Katie has been quietly obsessed with the birch tree, also known as the paper birch. After much experimentation, the artist has created her own impression of the tree and its environs through the use of paper that has been cut, rolled and uniquely installed. The addition of light and sound make her project complete and offers visitors to the artlab an immersive experience that is quite meditative if not a little surreal.

artlab is a gallery space dedicated to installation, time-based media, sound and light.
artlab is not afraid to showcase the fruit of visual experimentation; it does not require a ‘finished product’ or an ‘established artist.’

Arts Education The BIG Ts The capital Ts are vital to the survival of the arts and if you have a Talent you are willing to share there are many Ts that the KAC education department would be Thrilled to receive. Beginning with simple Tasks you can do such as Typing documents, Tracking information, and Tallying totals, all critical to our administrative services. There are also opportunities to Talk about art to those who might be experiencing it for the first time by becoming a presenter for our popular Understanding Art Tours program. This school focused outreach Touches children in profound ways through engaging exposure to the KAC exhibits, paired with a hands-on studio experience that gives expression to ideas. If you are an outgoing and enthusiastic, your Time will be very rewarding as Understanding Art Tour guide or Teacher.

If your gift to the arts comes in the form of Treasure, you can provide an extended educational experience for a deserving Talented future artist by funding a class for our scholarship program. Leah Fisher is a recipient of the Spring Term Scholarship. She is a graduate of the KAC Very Special Arts program, who is now taking an adult ceramics class. On her first day of class she exclaimed, “I’m going to be a potter!” In response, her fellow classmates offered to help her reach her dream in any way they can. By providing a scholarship in the form of a class fee, KAC can expand the outreach of the education department by including more students through scholarships.

NEW KRASL STAFF Sarah Eisele, Volunteer Coordinator
Sarah Eisele joined the Krasl Art Center staff in April as our new Volunteer Coordinator. Sarah loves people, books and the arts, and when not organizing volunteers for the Krasl Art Center, she is a librarian next door at the St. Joseph Public Library. Having attended the Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff as a guest, she is familiar with the outpouring of community support present during the event and is excited to be a part of the team. Sarah is available at the Krasl Art Center on Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings, please stop by say hello, and find out about becoming one of our valued volunteers.
Jodie Hardy, Education & Interpretation Manager
Jodie Hardy joined the Krasl team in late March as the new Education & Interpretation Manager. She is responsible for evaluating, conceptualizing, implementing and managing KAC classes, programs and activities designed to facilitate the understanding of art. She is currently recruiting faculty, art facilitators and volunteers to usher in new Fall programming.
Sarah Eisele
Jodie comes to the KAC with experience as an artist, art educator and former art center director of the SullivanMunce Cultural Center in Zionsville, Indiana. She moved to St. Joseph in 2010 after achieving her Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the Herron School of Art & Design in Indianapolis. She has taught university level sculpture, painting and color theory, and believes that an education that includes art coursework provides vital creative problem solving skills to all professional pursuits. Her artistic practice includes public art sculpture commissions and video installations that investigate advertising culture utilizing signage methods and materials. Her kinetic sculpture Close-up, installed at Community Hospital North of Indianapolis, is a painted steel and wood structure that stands thirty feet wide, fifteen feet tall, and weighs over 2500 pounds. In September of 2011 she was a featured artlab artist, with the installation exhibit Conspicuity that focused on abandoned sign structures in Southwest Michigan.

Moving forward the KAC is pleased to recognize its long standing members as Friends of the Krasl. Initially formed as a social group for arts enthusiasts, the Friends provided volunteer service which was instrumental to the successful development and management of the KAC gift shop, HollyMarket fundraiser and overall organizational growth. We are pleased to continue the legacy of this group by now honoring those Krasl Art Center members who support this organization through membership year after year. Krasl Art Center members who have maintained a membership at any level for 15 years or more will be recognized as Friends of the Krasl and are encouraged to involve their friends and guests. KRASL ART FAIR ON THE BLUFF July 14-15, 2012; Saturday, 10 am-6 pm; Sunday, 10 am-5 pm This year over 900 artists applied for the Art Fair, which gave our expert jury the chance to select some of the best artists in the nation. We are happy to announce that we have 70 returning artists, 28 artists who reapplied and were accepted, and 118 brand new artists! It is certain to be a gorgeous, memorable and enjoyable show. In 51 years, the Art Fair has grown from a small regional clothesline art fair into an impressive nationally ranked Art Fair with over 200 artists representing 32 states and Canada, and attracting nearly 70,000 visitors to Michigan’s Great Southwest. The Krasl Art Center wants to thank the volunteers, sponsors, community leaders and members who through their vision, perseverance, creative energy, financial support and hard work are responsible for the success of the Art Fair. Because of their efforts, we have a valued tradition not only recognized in Michigan, but throughout the country. The Krasl Art Fair is rated among the top art fairs in the country; ranked #24 in the nation by Sunshine Artist Magazine and #32 by the Art Fair Sourcebook.
Friday Night Kick Off Party, July 13, 5 – 10 pm This event is free and open to the public. The Krasl Art Center celebrates the opening of the Art Fair on the Bluff with the annual Friday Night Kick-Off Party on July 13, from 5-10 pm. The party is a thank you to the community for supporting the Art Fair for 51 years. Entertainment will include live music, a “Sneak Peek” at art by this year’s art fair artists and a Krasl Kids’ Zone which includes free art activities from 5-8 pm. The event also features a wine tasting tent featuring Tabor Hill Winery & White Pine Winery. Food from Timothy’s Restaurant will be available. See you there!

Featured Sculpture Winds of Change, Rick Ott 2010 Stainless Steel and Aluminum Location: Jean Klock Park in Benton Harbor, Michigan Winds of Change is constructed of intertwined freeform shapes and found objects that play together in the wind as if in a synchronized dance. The sculpture is intended to entertain the senses and curiosity of the viewer, and give them pause to anticipate the inevitable change that will occur in the sculpture when the wind blows next.
