»A Journey through the History of Rateče«

»Sprehod skozi zgodovino Rateč« Rateče so manjša vas tik pred italijansko mejo in odlično izhodišče za izlete, kolesarjenje ter tek na smučeh. Vas leži na planoti pod tromejo Slovenije, Avstrije in Italije. Duhu, sv. Heleni in sv. Florijanu.

Rateče is a small village just outside the Italian border and an excellent starting point for excursions, cycling and crosscountry skiing. The village lies on a plateau below the tripoint between Slovenia, Austria and Italy. It is surrounded by the high mountaintops of the Julian Alps to the south and the Karawanks to the north. At the top of the hill rising above the village, visit the Church of the Holy Spirit. Originally, a Gothic-style chapel that is said to be built in 1520 stood there. According to Valvasor, it had three altars dedicated to the Holy Spirit, St Helen and St Florian. It was probably its favourable position that led to the decision to build a parish church there upon the establishment of the parish in 1785. When you get hungry and are looking for a place to eat, stop by Gostišče pri Žerjavu where you can see a memorial room dedicated to the history of ski jumping. In the village

centre, visit the well-known Kajžnk House (Kajžnkova hiša) that houses a museum collection representing the ethnological heritage of Rateče. You can also walk to the Rateče cemetery; the St Thomas’ Church is especially worth seeing. The history of Rateče is hidden in the stones of this church and, according to tradition, it is believed to be the oldest church in the valley. What also makes the St Thomas’ Church so important is undoubtedly the fact that, in ancient times, it was home to the brotherhood of the Apostle. Besides, it is the birth place of the so-called “Rateče Manuscript” which proves that Slovenian was spoken there more than 600 years ago. The famous frescoes of St Mary of Višarje can also be seen in Rateče, namely at Gostišče Šurc that is also a nice traditional family restaurant with more than a 40-year-long tradition.

Tam boste uzrli slap Nadiža - prvi izvir reke Save Dolinke (reka vmes ponikne, drugi izvir so Zelenci).

- rajski planinski svet, kjer vas bo očarala idilična lepota narave, ki ji skorajda ni para v naši domovini in daleč naokrog.

»Valley Planica with Tamar« You must have heard of the Valley under the Ponce mountains – Planica, famous for sky jumping and home to the biggest sky flying hill in the world. Every year, thousands of sports fans visit Planica as, for the past two decades every March, it has been hosting the Ski Jumping World Cup Final. We recommend you to take a stroll along Nordic Centre Planica, from where you can take a walk through Valley Planica to Tamar. There you will see the the Nadiža Waterfall – the first source of the River Sava Dolinka (the river disappears further on, its second source being Zelenci). Though the source is a mere 20-minute walk away, we highly recommend that you wear hiking boots and are in decent shape. Not far from the ski jumping hills, the Olympic Sports Centre Planica is located, where you can get some refreshments before going on a hike to the paradise alpine world of Tamar that will

captivate you with its idyllic natural beauty, almost beyond compare both in Slovenia and far and wide. In Tamar (the Zelje meadow, at the end of Planica Valley), there stands the famous Chapel of Mary Help of Christians that, due to frequent landslides, was built in a particularly safe location. Ever since Bishop Gregorij Rožman blessed the Chapel on the third Sunday in August 1936, it has been a regular place of pilgrimage for the inhabitants of Rateče, Podkoren, Kranjska Gora, Rute and many others. As the chapel’s patron saint, Jožef Lavtižar chose Mary Help of Christians of Brezje, an image that holds a very special place in the heart of every religious Slovenian. This is where the Rateče shepherd’s cottage and cheese dairy used to stand, but today it is a mountain hut where you can stop, rest your tired feet and treat yourself to an excellent lunch.

»From Rateče to Lakes Fusine« Lakes Fusine, also known as Lakes Mangart or Laghi di Fusine in Italian, are two lakes (Upper and Lower Lake Fusine) that lie in Italy near the town of Tarvisio, not far from the Slovenian border. In 1971, the Italians designated the valley of the two glacial lakes the Lake Fusine National Park. We recommend you to go on a hike from Rateče to the aforementioned lakes, preferably with a guide who will tell you all sorts of interesting details about the historical features of this area and the border itself.

The border crossing is closely connected with the famous Treaty of Rapallo. The lakes are also a popular destination for numerous cyclists who come here by following the Jure Robič Cycle Path from Jesenice to Italy and onwards. You can stop for refreshments on the terrace of the bottom lake and walk fully rested towards the upper lake to see the Rateče grazing livestock. After returning pleasantly tired, you can have lunch or a snack in one of the taverns in Rateče.

»Secret Settlement of Podkoren and the Zelenci Nature Reserve«

We recommend you to start your trip in the old village centre. There, you will be able to admire the more than one-hundredyear-old lime tree, under which a hidden treasure is supposed to be buried. Once, a washing basin used to stand nearby, where our ancestors used to meet and spend time together. Get some rest at the Vitranc guest house, where you can fill yourselves up and have a chat with the friendly local people. Taking a look around, you will notice old farmhouses, richly decorated portals and the beautiful house Belopeški dvori. This building has a heart. It was a meeting point of Šefman troops who fought for the Northern Slovene Border and pushed the Italian army back to the settlement of Pontebba after the First World War, thus preserving the Slovene national territory. Have a walk through the village that was once important because of the postal carriage leading through the village of Podkoren along the mountain pass of Korensko sedlo to Koroška. Have a stop at the guest house Pri Čošeljnu (the Rasinger homestead), where you will notice a memorial plaque dedicated to the inventor of the lamp for use in coal mines and the worldrenowned natural scientist – Sir Humphry Davy. It was he who fell in love with this part of the world. He was particularly thrilled with the place known as Zelenci, the small Zelenci

lake with its unique ecosystem representing the second source of the River Sava Dolinka that is protected as a Nature Reserve. We warmly recommend you to visit that location; either on foot, by bike or by riding a horse. In order to experience a real adventure, don’t forget to hire a local guide. When setting out towards the pass of Korensko sedlo you may revisit the times of the important Slovene reformer, Primož Trubar, who used to travel along this stony road towards the German countries. On the southern part, there stands the Vitranc hill, where ski champions, such as Bojan Križaj, Rok Petrovič, Alberto Tomba, Benjamin Reich and Ivica Kostelić used to win their races.

jedro Kranjske Gore in začutite utrip pristne alpske vasi. To še posebej priporočamo v mesecu decembru, ko v vasi vlada prav posebno praznično vzdušje.

»The Rich History of the Authentic Alpine Village of Kranjska Gora« Kranjska Gora is an alpine village in the Upper Sava Valley that is nowadays known as a ski and cosmopolitan resort. If you visit us, we recommend you to hire a local guide. We can also organise a panoramic ride in a truly special antique tourist bus, an attraction in its own right. It has a glass roof giving an excellent view in all directions. The road through Kranjska Gora takes you across the Vršič mountain pass, part of which is also called “the Russian Road” as it was built by Russians. On the way to Vršič, there stands the Russian Chapel put up in the memory of Russian soldiers who got buried under an avalanche during the construction of the road across the Vršič mountain pass. On your way from Kranjska Gora to Vršič, you can stop and admire Lakes Jasna that turn into a swimming spot in the warm summer months. We recommend that you make a brief visit to the Židana Marela shop to buy some souvenirs. Take a walk through the village centre of Kranjska Gora and feel the pulse of a genuine alpine village. It is especially

worth seeing in December when the village is bubbling with festive spirit. Kranjska Gora also has one of the oldest farms, the well-known Liznjek Farm that was renovated and turned into a museum in 1983. Just crossing the threshold of the house, one gets an idea of what life was like for wealthy farmers in the late 17th century. In this more than 300-year-old genuine alpine house, you can walk through the open-fire kitchen, the wide entrance hall and small rooms, climb up to the attic to see the two wooden bedrooms called “štibelc” and descend to the cellar, known in the local dialect as “čevder”. The house boasts frescoes on the façade, a stone semi-circular portal and a wooden balcony – called “gank”. After seeing the Liznjek Farm, you can head towards the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption. The church was initially called Our Lady of the White Gravel, but all that is left from it is the Roman-style stone bell tower. The current church was built by Villach master builder Jernej Firtaler in 1510.

»V objemu Špikove skupine in Martuljških slapov« Gozd Martuljek oziroma Rute se nahajajo pod mogočnim gorovjem, imenovanim Martuljška skupina (včasih imenovana tudi Špikova skupina in Martuljkova skupina). Gorska veriga se s severnimi stenami dviga nad Zgornjesavsko dolino nad Gozd Martuljkom in spada pod Julijske Alpe.

Gozd Martuljek

»In the Embrace of the Špik Mountain Range and the Martuljek Waterfalls« Gozd Martuljek or Rute lies at the foothill of the great mountains of the Martuljek mountain range (sometimes also known as the Špik mountain range). With its northern walls, the mountain chain rises above the Upper Sava Valley above Gozd Martuljek and is part of the Julian Alps. It is a landscape park (since 1949) and is a part of the Triglav National Park (since 1981). At the foot of one of the most breath-taking Slovenian mountains, Mt. Špik, there are the Lower and Upper Martuljek Waterfall. On the way between the two waterfalls, you will see the cottage Brunarica Pri Ingotu (1h on foot in hiking boots) that offers excellent home-cooked food and a great atmosphere where you can regain your strength. For those who can make the climb to the second waterfall (there are another 90 minutes of walking uphill from Brunarica pri Ingotu), you can see the “mosses” or “the Spring at Cold Waters”, where the water gushes from the ground and flows down over the moss, giving it its beautiful green colour all-year round. When visiting us, you should not miss seeing the famous cheese dairy Pr’ Hlebanju where they can organise a cheese tasting for you. The farm with more than a

500-year-long history, to which the house’s solid wood ceiling dating back to 1506 also bears witness, lies on a sunny terrace of the Karawanks in the village of Srednji Vrh above Gozd Martuljek at the altitude of 1000 m, affording the most beautiful view of the Špik mountain range. The tradition of dairy making was brought back to life ten years ago. All fresh cows’ milk today is used to make cheese and other dairy products that regularly receive gold awards in the Delicacies of Slovenian Farms competition. We also recommend you to see the Finžgar Chapel that serves as a memorial to all of those who died in the nearby mountains. If you decide to go on a guided tour with our local guide, let us tell you a few words about the fascinating process of charcoal-burning in “a charcoal pile”. It used to be the most common form of forest exploitation, but today it is only a memory of this once highly developed craft.

Mojstrana, Dovje in Zgornja Radovna »A Pilgrimage on the Path of St Mary of Višarje«

If you take a short stroll around Mojstrana, you will see a number of old farms, for instance Šmercova gostilna that has a fresco of St Mary of Višarje. Mojstrana has known pilgrimage or religious tourism since the 15th century when Slovenians started following the pilgrim path to Višarje near Tarvisio. Traces of the route are seen in the images of St Mary of Višarje on the houses in Mojstrana and Radovna, while no such image can be found in Dovje. According to tradition, the houses with the image (fresco) of St Mary of Višarje offered the pilgrims shelter and food against payment– they could also be seen on inns – while also serving as a signpost. We also recommend a visit to the remains of the former Mojstrana cement factory, known in the local dialect

as “fabrka”. A noteworthy fact is that the cement from the Mojstrana factory was used to build the Suez Canal and the Singapore Fortress. “Fabrka” is also an excellent starting point for a short stroll to the idyllic Lake Kreda hiding in the woods where they used to dig chalk for the cement. For those of you who would like to experience a real pilgrimage, we recommend that you continue your journey by driving through the Upper Sava Valley to Italy, all the way to Žabnice (Camporosso), where you can take a cable car ride to Svete Višarje (Monte Santo di Lussari) that also represents the crossroads between three Slovenias – that of the Slovenian emigrants, the Slovenian minorities living in neighbouring countries and those living in the motherland.

neorenesančnem slogu in pokrita s skodlami. Tabernakelj je v osnovi še gotski. V zakristiji so odkrili čudovito fresko, ki prikazuje Jezusovo križanje.

It shows traces of Gothic architecture, but was rebuilt in the

Neo-Renaissance style and shingled in 1829. The tabernacle is still essentially Gothic. A beautiful fresco depicting the crucifixion of Jesus was discovered in the vestry. Its age is unknown but the fresco has already been partly restored. The cemetery next to the church is also worth seeing. Numerous climbers who died in the Triglav mountains are buried there. The most well-known was Klement Jug. For a whole of 38 years, Jakob Aljaž had been priest at St Michael’s Church in Dovje, whose work and selflessness has guaranteed him a special place in the Slovenian history.

»In the Embrace of a Triglav Fairytale« Visit the quiet alpine village of Mojstrana and walk through the doors into the magical world and straight into the embrace of the mighty peak, Mt. Triglav, hiding at the end of the most well-known and probably the most popular alpine valley, Vrata. In its gable, the valley crashes into the wide Triglav northern wall; it comes into view in all its glory after only a few minutes’ walk from the end of the road at Aljažev dom. From here, you can walk through the woods for another few minutes and look at the great peg – a monument dedicated to the fallen partisan mountaineers. The Vrata Valley is considered to be one of the major starting points for the ascent to Mt. Triglav. Even those of you who don’t intend to climb to the top will feel its mightiness in this spot and see the symbol of Slovenia from up close without much exertion. On the way to Vrata, the Peričnik waterfall is a must-see. There are actually two waterfalls,

the Lower and Upper Peričnik, that offer a fantastic refreshment in the summer heat and a spectacular scene in the winter when the water freezes over, becoming especially inviting for photographers. Through the 11-km-long glacial valley in the Julian Alps runs the River Triglavska Bistrica, flowing into the River Sava Dolinka in Mojstrana. In the summer season, you can stop at Koča pri Peričniku to get some refreshments or go to Aljažev dom where you will be greeted by an extensive and diverse menu of home-cooked food.
