Quality and flexibility make Alfagomma a successful world player Alfagomma. It may sound like an attractive Italian make of car, but in fact the Alfagomma Group offers a complete range of hydraulic and industrial hoses, fittings, adapters, pipes and hydraulic components and accessories.

The Italian company is a world-class player and leader in the European market. When the company was founded in 1956, its focus was on hose manufacturing. Since the 1990s, other products have been added and the company now supplies a complete range of products for the transmission of liquids, including oil.

The Southern European company focuses their full attention on their

core task; an approach that means they can adapt quickly and ensures that they continue their work. Enrico Gennasio manages the company from Milan and Guido Gennasio acts as the CEO in Singapore. Enrico Gennasio: "Our strength lies in the quality of our products and certainly in our flexibility. We do a lot of work for major machinery manufacturers. If they ask for a specific modification, we're able to sort it out in just a few weeks. That's what makes us

The company now has factories spread across five continents as well as 85 sales offices in 21 countries, but its heart remains in Italy. "Of course, during the recession we could have chosen to move the factory to somewhere else in the world where the costs are lower. We made a conscious decision not to do so. We had and still have confidence in our product and in our people. We know that, sooner or later, quality is what counts. That's why we never doubted for a moment that we had to remain in Italy and, therefore, in Europe." Those difficult years have now passed and Alfagomma is benefiting from its decision to stand firm on its home footing.

Sticking to its principles is typical of the company and is also Alfagomma's attitude when it comes to the environment. The company wants to minimise its ecological impact by using energy-saving processes and optimising logistical efficiency. "We are certified in accordance with environmental standards (ISO 14000). Our employees undergo continuous training as well as additional training in this area and we make every effort to minimise our emissions and the quantity of waste we produce. We work with government bodies and do our very best to manufacture products that are as environmentally-friendly as possible", Gennasio explains.

Alfagomma delivers to machinery manufacturers (OEM) and to suppliers for the aftermarket, such as Kramp, with a ratio of 50% between the two. The company has had close links with Kramp since 2003.

"Kramp is our biggest customer for the aftermarket, particularly with a focus on agriculture", says Gennasio. "We are growing together, year in and year out. "Both companies want to give customers as much help as possible, and we support and strengthen each other in achieving this goal."

WORKING WITH HYDRAULICS: IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS Working with hydraulic products and machines requires care, precision work and regular maintenance. This prevents unnecessary costs and reduces the risk of accidents and production interruptions. During repair and maintenance work, the importance of using appropriate materials is often underestimated.

It seems innocent enough: using a brand A coupling on a brand B hose but, even though it seems to fit perfectly in the beginning, the risk of this leading to problems and dangerous situations is high.

That is not to say that there is a difference in quality between the manufacturers — the components simply don't always work well together.

Swage data, hose lines, hoses and couplings differ from one manufacturer to the next and are not interchangeable. When parts from different manufacturers are used on one installation, there is a very real risk of the hose slipping out of the coupling. This can be dangerous for whoever is using it and can also have a seriously detrimental effect on the service life and performance of machines.

Don't forget that any form of warranty is invalidated as soon as parts from other manufacturers are used.

Choice of hose Not all hydraulic hoses are the same. Different working conditions require different hoses. Put simply, a hydraulic hose consists of three parts: the outer wall, reinforcement and the inner tube. The outer wall protects the reinforcement and the inner wall against outside influences, such as ozone, wear, weather conditions and chemicals. A different outer wall may be required for each situation. The reinforcements ensure that the hose can withstand internal pressure and vacuum. There are three types of reinforcement: braided, coiled and steel wire spiral. Once again, the intended use of the hose determines which type of reinforcement is most appropriate.

Choice of coupling A hydraulic coupling has two ends: the flange or threaded connection for connecting to the installation and the swage coupling for attaching to the hose. The dimensions of the hose determine the size of the end that is pushed onto the hose. The type of hose coupling depends on the manufacturer. As mentioned earlier, it is important to use materials from a single manufacturer, as they will be fully compatible with each other.

Storing hoses Store hoses in a cool, dry environment, away from direct sunlight.

When both ends are connected, allow the oil to flow through at low pressure and check for leaks. This also ensures that the air is pushed out of the tubes, thus improving performance.

When everything is connected, inspect the entire system regularly. Take ample time for the first inspection.

After this inspection, the user will know how everything looks and how it is meant to sound. During subsequent inspections, this can be used as a guide and any problems can be detected quickly.

Fluid injection: undetected but lifethreatening injury While the technician is working, a hydraulic hose bursts. He feels as though he has been stung by a bee, and looks at his hand. All he can see is a small blue dot. Nothing to worry about. Twelve hours later, he is lying on the operating table and needs to have three of his fingers amputated.

This sounds like a horror story, but it's reality. Wounds caused by hydraulic fluid being injected into the body can be fatal, although the wounds do not initially appear serious. Fluids under high pressure can penetrate deep into the body at the speed of a bullet, with devastating consequences.

Thankfully, accidents like this are relatively rare — but therein lies the true danger. Due to the lack of knowledge regarding the possible consequences, even among medical staff, there is a risk that the response will be too dismissive.

Preventing accidents Check hydraulic systems regularly for leaks. Do NOT do this by running your hands along a hose. Always wear protective gloves and face masks.

Hose configurator With our easy-to-use hose configurator, you can order a hydraulic hose in just a few clicks, at the right length and with the right couplings to meet any requirement.

"The big difference to similar online tools is that this configurator doesn't only include our best-selling hoses. It allows you to view all the options you could want", Hans Freriks explains. As the Hydraulic Cylinder Solutions Manager at Kramp, he was closely involved in creating the configurator, which is now helping customers to order both cylinders and hydraulic hoses.

The structure of the configurator is ideal for both replacement market and OEM use. "Imagine you need to replace a faulty hose", Freriks explains. "You can specify the number of steel layers or the international EN standard to find the right hose. If you're an OEM, you can simply select the hose based on the operating pressure, temperature, abrasion resistance and bend radius parameters. There are also several additional options such as cleaning, protection, labelling and testing." Customers also have the option of putting together their own hose set. This set is allocated a single part number so that it is easy to re-order the complete set in the future. Another great advantage is that you can see the price right away. There is also the option to select either a short delivery time or an economy delivery time at a discounted price.

Hydraulics The use of hydraulics on farm machinery is certainly nothing new, with Harry Ferguson pioneering the now standard hydraulic linkage arrangement found on the back of most tractors in the 1940’s – however, as ground breaking and industry changing as that first hydraulic linkage was, it was still a very simple system in comparison to the hydraulic systems used

Modern farming utilises some form of hydraulic system on nearly every piece of machinery. Even the exceptions, implements such as mounted cultivators or flatbed trailers, still need a hydraulic system on the tractor to lift them in and out of work, or in the case of the trailers possibly operate brakes. The systems used can vary from a simple ram and a couple of pipes for operating a bale grab, to self-contained systems with oil reservoirs, pumps, electro-hydraulic valves and rams that have the ability to set maximum or minimum stroke points using a control box. A handy feature on some high specification hedge cutters when set to avoid accidental contact with the tractor!

Tractor hydraulics have also seen massive changes since the days of the little Ferguson tractor – power steering systems, oil operated brakes, high tech linkage systems with electronic proportionate controls and electrically operated auxiliary spool valves, programmed for flow rate and active time using a computer, instead of having to lean out the back of the cab to adjust a manual restrictor. All these changes have made tractors more operator friendly, safer, and efficient.

This increasing complexity of hydraulics has transformed the lives of operators, allowing the movement and control of machinery from the comfort and safety of the cab, whilst also increasing work efficiency by reducing stoppage time to make adjustments, fold machinery for transport or manually lock attachments to the machine, like on a loader for example.

The problem with all of these added hydraulic systems is that they can be very complex, and mean that there is much more

that could go wrong, be it a switch, a valve or a pipe, they all have the potential to fail. With such a wide range of hydraulic fittings available, from different connector types, different thread patterns, to pipe sizes and hose types, it is important that dealers keep in stock, or have fast access too, a wide range of fittings and components that can enable more basic repairs, such as pipe replacements, to be carried out the same day. The more complex repairs or replacement parts should still only take a day or two to ensure that expensive machinery down time is reduced. It is also important that dealers have the knowledge and expertise to give advice on hydraulic systems, whether it is simple on farm building projects that need a ram or two to move a component, or more complex systems that require a certain type of oil – getting it wrong can be a costly, and potentially dangerous mistake.

Hydraulic systems within agriculture are only going to be utilised more and more, with increasing complexity, so they are an area where training and experience will never be wasted – whether on farm, or at a dealer level. With the possibility of autonomous vehicles carrying out field work in the future, it is possible that the operator will become more of an engineer to keep numerous machines serviced and operational, with computer systems, electrics and hydraulics becoming the sole operators. n

Phil Ward from J G Paxtons visited the Kramp Sales and Distribution Centre in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire earlier in the year. The day that was chosen for the visit happened to be same day as Phil's son Seth had his birthday, obviously this could not be ignored so Phil was sent home with a Fastrac toy to surprise Seth.

As you can see from the picture Seth was very happy with his birthday gift!

Not just the Irish representative for Kramp, new Account Manger Chris Cashman has also represented Ireland in a number of European tournaments for Underwater Hockey.

Chris left West Waterford to study at Plymouth University and began his career with Kramp when he graduated in 2008. Joining the sales team as Product Specialist for Tractor and Vehicles, Chris spent 8 years expanding his knowledge across all machinery sections, PTO and transmission and by 2014 had been promoted to Senior Product Specialist.

In 2015 a new challenge was presented; 20 SDF dealers were set up around Ireland for which Chris was responsible. This opportunity meant when Kramp entered the Irish market earlier this year, Chris was prepared for the role of Account Manager and has moved home to his family farm outside of Dungarvan.

Thinking about the new challenge ahead Chris stated "I thrive on success, knowing that I have made a dealer happy and fulfilled their expectation by providing our assortment, our services and our values always makes me feel very proud.
