Chips that are implanted in the body, artificial organs and limbs which are customised, drones delivering orders and products like food, that may be made in a 3D printer in the near future. At the moment, 3D food printing is still a huge hype, but it is anticipated that 3D printing technology will become fundamental in the not too distant future for the way in which people deal with food. One thing is certain: this rapidly developing market has enormous potential.

A lot of research is required to convert this hype into reality. To what extent will our branch of industry be influenced by this technology? Will we soon be able to print

WD-40 was founded in the 1950s as the ‘Rocket Chemical Company’. After 39 failed attempts, Norm Larsen developed a special protective agent against

This is something that has to change. This is also why a close working relationship has developed with Kramp. Thomas Schmitz is Pan European Strategic Account Manager and explains: “We have been in intensive talks with Kramp for over two years, with a view to collaborating in the agricultural parts market to increase brand awareness and use at the European level. We have set out common objectives on paper and I am convinced that we can achieve them”.

3D printing. It’s a hot topic, the number of applications is increasing steadily, and it looks like it’s here to stay. On the other hand, it’s actually been around longer than many people might think. 3D printing was actually already possible in the mid 1980s.

Where do we stand today? Will everyone have a 3D printer in their home in a few years? How will this affect the sector?

t sounds attractive: replacing a part without having to go to the shop.

Simply press a button and a new part, which is at least as good as the original, will be ready in only a few hours. Although this may not yet be possible today, there are people who expect such scenarios to be quite normal in roughly ten years. Even though such printers have existed for many years, 3D printing is now clearly gathering momentum when it

comes to prices and features. Consumers can already buy a printer for home use for a very reasonable price. Mattel (the creator of the Barbie doll) has recently released its ‘ThingMaker’. The ThingMaker is a 3D printer for children that sells for about 280 euros. The printer can be controlled via an app. Even though it can’t print complex designs, it is an example of what we can expect to see in the future.

Before we take a look at the opportunities and limitations of 3D printers as regards the agricultural sector, let’s first consider what 3D printing is currently being used for. Until recently, it was mainly only large companies that used 3D printing for prototyping. AGCO is a good example. They use 3D printers to produce and prototype new parts. While an aluminium prototype might cost AGCO between 5,000 and 7,000 euros, a 3D printed plastic version would only cost the tractor builder between 1,000 and 2,000 euros, not to mention the time savings involved. Architectural offices, too, have been using 3D printers for quite some time, as they are an ideal way to create scale models. In short, the opportunities are increasing fast and what with the falling prices of printers and the improved quality of materials, it seems only a matter of time before 3D printing will be much more widely used.

Considerable time savings And how will this affect the agricultural sector? How will these developments affect things in the workshop and in the field? For the time being, it doesn’t yet look like replacement parts will be rolling out of printers on a regular basis. Top quality printers are still too expensive for this. However, that’s not to say that 3D printers aren’t being used yet at all. On the contrary. We already mentioned the example of AGCO, but smaller companies are actually already using 3D printers too. These are mainly (very) large farmers and machine builders. Typically, they will not have a printer of their own but will make use of specialised companies that own a number of different printers. In a video on Agriculture.com, US company GVL-Poly explains how they made a considerable investment in this new technology a few years ago, an investment that has already paid off. One of the things the company uses the printers for is to test new noses for harvesting machines. Whereas in the past, a mould had to be made and the company had to wait eight to sixteen weeks for a prototype, they now have a working component at their disposal after only sixteen hours.

This is obviously a huge time saving. And although the final model can’t yet be mass printed, the 3D printer can be used to make the moulds that are necessary for production.

you to work more creatively,” he explains. “You are no longer constrained by things that cannot be done. If it can be drawn in AutoCAD, it can be printed.

Development costs are much lower than in the past, which means you are now free to try more things.”

But what everyone is really waiting for is a metal printer. A plastic prototype is great, and moulds can of course be printed, but a metal printer is what is really needed, especially for demanding applications. But the wait might actually be nearing its end. In early March, it was announced that a Dutch startup sold a metal printer to Airbus. The aircraft manufacturer will be using the invention of Additive Industries in Eindhoven to 3D print hinges and armrests, among other things. The 3D metal printer has an elongated shape. Inside, it contains a building board. Metal powder is placed on the board, divided, and then melted by lasers to

Opportunities

Another method is the use of liquids, such as photopolymers, in a similar inkjet-type print head, where the printing is also performed layer by layer. A UV light attached to the print head is then activated, which converts each liquid layer into a solid layer. This method is also known as ‘stereolithography’.

What can this technology offer a mechanisation company? A lot. Perhaps not immediately, but certainly in a few years. However, investment will be required.

In addition to being purchased for personal use, a 3D printer can also be used to provide a service to customers. Although many farmers would probably benefit from owning a 3D printer, they are too pricey to purchase. There are therefore potential opportunities in this area for a dealer, which could function as a ‘print shop’. In addition, 3D printing makes it a lot easier to experiment with machine modifications.

The future Even though 3D printing has been possible for years, we are only now discovering its full potential. It will take at least another decade before this method of production is used daily. However, this doesn’t mean that future technologies aren’t already being looked into. Meanwhile, 4D printing has also made its

It should come as no surprise that brands like Adidas and Nike are already carrying out work in this area. Imagine footwear that could adapt to what you’re walking on: the moment you start walking on grass, studs automatically pop out of the bottom of your shoes, but retract again when you hit the hard pavement.

A newer method that is being used today is one where metal is used as a raw material in the printing process. It works just like the ‘normal’ method, except for the fact that the powder is made of metal.

A world apart The rules governing the use of drones are still evolving in the UK. Aerospace professionals are a field of study in themselves with their codes, technical jargon and specific scientific knowledge. "Getting to know people and people getting to know you as well as demonstrating that you have experience, that you know what you are talking about and that you observe the rules, that really helps", reveals the surveyor, who is encouraging people who are new to the field to familiarise themselves with the finer details governing the aerospace industry in all their various forms — civil aviation, recreational aviation, the defence sector and even the ultralight aircraft sector.

Multiple applications The use of drones allows us to carry out activities that would otherwise be very costly or dangerous. For some applications, drones effectively replace airplane or helicopter flights while reducing the application's carbon footprint and significantly reducing the operational costs whilst also improving the precision of data. "Drones are also useful for exploiting airspace", Patrick Lallouet insists. Regulations restrict drones to a maximum altitude of 150m or 450 ft, whereas planes cannot fly below an altitude of 500 ft. The surveyor has a particularly high level of expertise in 3D mapping. "We place photogrammetry plates over the area being mapped, which enables us to pinpoint georeferences on the map as well the height recorded by the photos. We then reconstruct three-dimensional maps by cross-referencing the orthophotographic maps and 3D point clouds using specialist

software. With 3D mapping, professionals can find out the exact height of trees, buildings or quarries and assess volumes.

Maximum efficiency When engaged in agriculture, Patrick Lallouet uses a type of spectroscopic camera. It records information that is then interpreted to determine the need for nitrogen fertilisation of crops. The surveyor then works as an expert for the specialised company Airinov. This is charged by farmers to realise the mapping of the spectra of rapeseed and wheat crops. The images returned from the fields on the device for estimating the quantities of biomass cultivation per hectare. Based on this map, soil type declared by the farmer and the performance target, the specialised company is then able to give a nitrogen fertilisation advice. It shall provide the farmer of nitrogen fertilisation card compatible for the modulated autopilot of a multitude of brands and spreading tools. For rape crops, mapping is performed at the beginning of winter and the end of winter and it's changing amounts of biomass in this period that will provide the most accurate dosing of nitrogen needed . For wheat, the first flight took place in early April. It had complemented a second flight between late May and mid-June. This last flight recording accurate information on the needs of end of cycle.

It allows to precisely adjust the final contribution, particularly to target a maximum efficiency of nitrogen and protein concentration in grain.

Reliable information In agriculture, crop mapping drone also has applications in the assessment and quantification of game damage. It also helps to provide additional and reliable information in the case of monitoring of crop tests and different research. "But we have not yet invented all possible applications that can be developed from UAV technology," says Patrick Lallouet.

Batteries under test Which 9V battery performs best? Kramp specialists tested six different saline and alkaline batteries. Based on the priceperformance ratio, which one came out on top from those tested?

The graph shows that, as expected, the alkaline batteries performed much better than the saline batteries. In particular is the difference in weight between the various batteries and the fact that the heavier batteries did not always perform better than the lighter ones.

When the voltage of a battery falls below 6V it can no longer be used. Most devices would no longer operate in this scenario. The test results show that the Koltec, Farma Saline and Rutland batteries reached the critical limit of 6V after 36 days. The Lacmé battery still showed 6.54V. After 50 days, the Koltec battery still had a "score" of 4.95V, whilst both the Farma Saline and Rutland batteries had 5.45V. The Lacmé battery showed the lowest voltage, namely 3.50V. The best performers were the Horizont Alkaline and Farma Alkaline batteries. After 50 days these batteries maintained an excellent 7.5V and so can still be used. Taking the battery price into account, the Farma Alkaline battery was deemed the winner of the test.

All the batteries were 55 Ah-9V batteries and were tested under a resistance of 200 Ohm over a period of 50 days.

Alkaline batteries are more expensive in comparison to saline batteries, but they are longer lasting. Whereas saline batteries lose voltage over time, alkaline batteries give a constant voltage over their service life. As devices often require at least 6V to operate, much of the energy in saline batteries is lost.

Parts centre in the heart of Herefordshire Carpenter Goodwin have been in business for 20 years. The company launched in March 1996 when Nick Goodwin and Richard Carpenter initially spoke about building a new parts business. Nick as an ex-mechanic had been in dealerships and stores for most of his working career and is very much the parts specialist with an immense knowledge base. Richard worked on his family farm, studied at university and was in retail sales before Carpenter Goodwin.

Both Nick and Richard saw a huge potential in the area for a tractor parts business and with a central location based in Leominster felt there was an untapped network. Both are from farming families and share an equal partnership in the business.

Although Carpenter Goodwin originally just focused on tractor and machinery parts, over the years the company has grown and now covers a wide range of products from workshop to ground care items such as lawnmowers, strimmers and hedgetrimmers.

The business started with just 2 people, but quickly became 3, when Alastair joined them as Shop Manager within their first year. They currently have 12 staff.

Carpenter Goodwin are very proud of their open plan shop concept which works on the principal of “making a shop out of parts”. They have attracted many new customers, but the emphasis is mainly on trade. They advertise locally on a regular basis and take part in local fairs, such as the Royal Welsh show.

Both Nick and Richard believe that their future growth will stem from the internet. The shop is almost like a webshop to browse the products before purchase, but ultimately orders will be placed online in the comfort of home and will be either collected or delivered the following day.

Back in March, Carpenter Goodwin celebrated 20 years in business and held an Open Day at their premises at Leominster.

This one day show took place on Thursday the 17th March and involved all of their key suppliers. Kramp were proud to be a part of the show. A variety of promotions were offered to all visitors, which proved highly successful. The show was a resounding success and attracted over 200 visitors.

Carpenter Goodwin have had a relationship with Kramp for 20 years. Product ranges include machinery parts and ground care related items. Recently they have registered for Kramp Online service and are already seeing the huge potential in the service.

The end users that have registered are already benefitting from the massive product range and convenience of online ordering.

They have also revamped their shop and this has increased new foot flow and generated further sales.

When asked about their success, they were clear with their answer: “Great staff, great service, high standards and no hierarchy. Everyone is hands-on and we ensure a relaxed environment. We believe this is one of the keys to a successful business.” Responded Nick.

After I left college, I spent 5 years working in retail at John Lewis as a Customer Assistant.

After gaining valuable experience on the shop floor, I went into their purchasing department dealing with mens' formal wear. I love data – number crunching, forecasting and working out demand and learned about the order process. After working in London, I am now looking forward to working in a completely different market, closer to home.

This year saw two new locations for the Kramp Academy; Reaseheath College, Cheshire and SRUC, Aberdeen Campus in Aberdeen. Both proved to be invaluable in terms of location and we will continue with Reaseheath into the 2016/2017 season. We are looking for another venue in Scotland to match that at Aberdeen. We are hoping to increase the current number of courses during the new season.

To gain the certification, end users can take the LANTRA created training and exam on rodenticide use. This can be found at www.rodentcontrolonfarms.co.uk, the training is free and the exam costs ÂŁ50 + VAT. A number of Farm Assurance schemes have been certified for safe rodenticide practices

by CRRU and if an end user is a member of one of these schemes then they do not need to take the exam while they remain a member. They simply need to prove that they are members of a CRRU approved farm assurance scheme. These include: 1. Red Tractor Farm Assurance 2. Quality Meat Scotland 3. Farm Assured Welsh Livestock 4. Northern Ireland Farm Quality Assurance Scheme.

End users without a certificate or approved farm assurance will no longer be able to purchase or use professional rodenticides. All users must adhere to the new code of best practice. Misuse could be reported to Natural England and your customer could therefore face a substantial fine.

Rat Bait and Kramp Dealers.

So what actions will you need to take as a Kramp dealer?

Firstly you will need to complete and return the DECLARATION 1 SUPPLY CHAIN PARTNERS form which you can get from Kramp UK. Please return the form to Chris Neville, Kramp UK, Stratton Business Park, London Road, Biggleswade, SG18 8QB or email rat.bait@kramp.com Secondly you will need to ask your customers to complete either the CRRU CERTIFIED USER DECLARATION or the FARM ASSURANCE SCHEME DECLARATION. You will need to keep these forms on file either in paper form or electronically.

Finally, if you are also using rodenticides around your business and wish to use the professional sized packs, then you will also need to complete the training and exam to remain compliant.
