Exciting Changes for Kramp UK Ltd Kramp has announced that Julian Thompson has been invited to step into the role of International Sales Academy Manager for the Kramp Group.

In this exciting new role, Julian will be responsible for training for the sales departments in 28 countries. This will include developing ecommerce and retail skills to maintain Kramp’s leading role in farming’s technical revolution. He will also take ownership of the development of Kramp’s CRM system.

"Farmers and other end users work in a highly competitive market and sometimes have to contend with a tight margin between profit and loss. The European head office of Hypro is located in Cambridge (UK), and spray heads and components have been manufactured there since 1954. The head office of Shurflo is located near Los Angeles (USA). Pentair maintains a leading position in domestic markets and reaches customers worldwide through a network of distributors.

With six regional sales engineers, Pentair is able to offer its customers local support. "We provide training on the fundamental principles of spray pumps and nozzle performance, as well as more advanced technical and sales training. We can offer support for field trials, comparisons and trade fairs by providing demonstration units for spray nozzles, documentation, product videos, nozzle samples, price requests via an iPad app and previews of digital marketing campaigns, for example."

The right quantity in the right place

The pressure on farmers is high — and that is nothing new. Farmers face low prices for milk and grain, pressure from public authorities and rising costs, just to mention a few examples. However, technology now offers more options than ever. Innovative solutions and new possibilities are everywhere to be found.

oT, or the Internet of Things, seems to be the new buzzword in the agricultural sector and it promises a great number of advantages: access to machinery at any

time and from any location, the latest data always to hand to help make the right decisions, and more time for the essentials thanks to automation. Although the first steps have been taken, there still seems to be a long road ahead. That is not to say that the industry is simply lying in wait — quite the opposite is true. Aside from IoT, there are plenty of other developments.

Now that drones are becoming more affordable and companies that use this new technology to gather information are starting up one after the other, data collection technology is becoming easier to use and more accessible for farmers. Farmers in particular can use drones to gain a more precise picture of where the soil requires extra moisture, manure or pesticides. In addition to the use of drones, data is being collected in many other ways. In many countries, measuring equipment is being tested on tractors to collect data and there are even small machines that drive on the ground and collect data independently.

Collecting all the information is step one. Step two is to convert the information into usable data, after which comes step three: using the data in the field. And there are new challenges around the corner: If your drone has made a flight and told your computer which areas require more or less spraying, your sprayer will then need to supply the ground with the correct quantity.

There is often a large variation in the volumes that must be used.

As standard, a nozzle cannot supply much more than 25% of the nominal delivery within the normal working pressure (bar).

To continue to maintain sufficient capacity with the sprayer, the vehicle must often accelerate. This also demands greater variation in the volumes supplied by the nozzles, while the dosage and the spray pattern must match even at lower speeds. A challenge indeed.

In an ideal world, this method of spraying would increase the yield from the land while using fewer resources — in other words, a win–win situation. The environmental aspect also plays an important role, as legislation is strict and is only getting stricter. It is therefore important that all active substances being sprayed end up in the right place and do not leach into surrounding environment. Nowadays, leaching into surface water is considered entirely out of the question by those who have a say in environmental issues.

Stringent requirements and new insights create a demand for new developments in sprayers and nozzles. The use of a single tip is no longer feasible in the majority of cases and, just as all roads lead to Rome, there are also different solutions available here. Some manufacturers opt to switch between multiple nozzles, while others use multiple nozzles at the same time or opt for pulsing nozzles.

In the end, they all want to achieve the same thing: more variation with the nozzle.

The future And where will we stand in ten, twenty or even fifty years? It is difficult to say, but it seems very likely that drones will play an increasingly important role in collecting data. Who knows. What is certain is that we are approaching an interesting time in agriculture.

Method: Varioselect When using a Varioselect module, you can opt for 1, 2, 3 or 4 nozzles. It is also possible to have two or more nozzles spraying simultaneously. This offers a great variety of possible volumes if the correct nozzles are chosen.

Method: Dynajet steering By quickly switching a spraying nozzle on and off and varying the length of time that it is switched on, it is possible to spray a smaller quantity with a large nozzle, without the spray pattern or coverage being affected. This technique is similar to a PWM arrangement for electric motors.

Method: Duo react It is possible to switch between two nozzles with this module. This provides a considerable variation in volume. It is not possible to spray with two nozzles at the same time with this system. The advantage is that it can easily be added on to an existing sprayer.

Method: Seletron When using a Seletron module, you can opt for 1, 2 or 4 nozzles. It is also possible to have two or more nozzles spraying simultaneously. This offers a great variety of possible volumes if the correct nozzles are chosen.

Some tips for maintenance: • It may seem obvious, but make sure that no hoses are hanging in the way of the spray pattern • Make sure that hoses are not kinked when the spray boom folds up • Make sure that the liquid in the tank is well mixed • Make sure that the direction and height of the nozzles are adjusted properly • Do not forget the filter — a blocked filter can significantly affect the desired result

Before a new variety is selected for the AHDB Recommended Lists, it has to go through many trials and tests to ensure it can potentially provide a more consistent economic return in the market. This is generally interpreted by growers to mean that a high yielding variety will automatically be recommended, but this is not the case. A high yielding variety with weaknesses in resistance to major diseases or straw strength, or a variety achieving a high yield, at the expense of poor specific weight or late maturity won’t make it onto the final list.

In some markets, including milling wheat and malting barley, quality characteristics take precedence over agronomic and disease resistance weaknesses, but even in these cases, varieties have to be better than current standard varieties. New varieties therefore have better agronomic characteristics than established varieties, with great potential to manage using fewer sprays, but growers and end users alike have less experience of managing them, so they are likely to be treated no differently from current varieties, losing some of the potential benefits of new varieties.

Buyers of grain for quality end use tend to react more cautiously to variety changes. It is easy to see why. If they can buy grain at a competitive price which meets their requirements, why change? More established varieties tend to be lower yielding than newer ones or have some more weaknesses in disease or agronomics characteristics. They are however easier to manage since growers have experience of growing them, and whilst fungicides remain effective and relatively affordable, growing these varieties and applying regular protectant fungicides seems to be a favourable option.

If we had the resources to forecast with better accuracy when a variety might break down to a disease, or forecast when the pathogen may find a way around to break a fungicide, life would be simpler. Although advances in weather forecasting have improved since the Michael Fish hurricane moment in 1987, realistically managing resistant varieties is going to remain challenging since we will not likely have the full picture as to what will happen in the near future.

Understanding the relative risk of new and established varieties is a start for a grower to take the plunge with a new variety. For quality markets, precedence is given to what your end user wants as opposed to trying something new. Feed markets give you more scope to try something new. We therefore still have the challenge as to how we can provide information to endusers sooner so they are encouraged to move to newer varieties.

AHDB now produce information to assist growers in comparing new varieties with older established ones, to see how a variety may perform – assuming no major breakdowns in resistance during the growing season. An agronomic merit is calculated by combining disease resistance and star strength ratings weighted by importance. The rating is then compared to the untreated yield of a variety. Varieties with good agronomic merit scores and high untreated yields are relatively lower risk than varieties with high untreated yields should you run into problems with spray timing or breakdowns in fungicide performance.

This information is based on existing information, which will make monitoring paramount if savings are to be made in sprays as opposed to treating it the same as the established varieties with their known weaknesses.

Using this approach where the mixture of species in the cover crop may help improve soil structure, supress weeds, retain soil nitrogen and provide a source of nutrients from the above ground biomass when it returns to the soil, may lead to a planned approach by growers of actively choosing to drill late, or in the spring, particularly where grass weed management is becoming a challenge. This would see trade-offs having to be accepted between benefits in soil improvements, nutrition, management of pests, weeds and diseases with fewer sprays, against a potential lower crop yield associated with spring and late autumn sowings.

The Recommended Lists can’t provide all the information, since it is only when systems trials are done on farm that growers can fully identify whether new approaches suit their management. However, the recommended lists can help ensure the right varieties are selected for this approach, with more emphasis taken in agronomic characteristics as opposed to yield alone, since drilling later may not enable you to realise the full yield genetic potential, but may fully realise the disease resistance potential of a variety, or speed of growth or establishment when a variety is sown in colder soils.

Moving from a reliance on sprays to get a profitable yield to making better use of sow date potentially linked to using cover crops between the cash crops, variety resistance, monitoring and forecasting, genetic diversity, rotations, and other agronomic practices, in the absence of a major leap in technological advance in breeding or crop protection technologies, will require a little more thought on the part of the grower, perhaps a little more risk taking by an agronomist, and a little more flexibility by the enduser in what they will buy.

These small step changes by all of those involved should help reduce our reliance on sprays to achieve a profitable yield.

What is certain in an uncertain world, is that these sprays we currently rely on won’t be as effective in the future as pathogens continue to evolve. n

Before picking your nozzle, you should take into consideration issues such as the type of chemical you are using, your target crop, your desired application rate and spray pressure, among other factors.

Although nozzles are often the least expensive component of a sprayer, they can have a huge influence on the quality of its performance. This is because nozzles are able to control application rate, influence droplet size and much more. Graham is going to talk about where to start.

This shows that a lot of improvements have already been made in recent years. But CEMA still feels that a five-point plan is necessary to cut the number of accidents even further.

This is now a requirement of trailed, mounted and self-propelled sprayers. Since adding this service, Bell Agricultural have seen a surge of sprayers of various sizes coming through their doors, from Knapsack sprayers right up to 36m crop sprayers. David predicts, therefore, that sprayers will continue to change in size. Bell Agricultural acknowledge that reliability is important and they are committed to keeping their customer’s sprayers in great conditions. Furthermore, David says that he has noticed a lot more early spraying in recent years while the ground is still hard, as well as spraying at night. This means pump servicing is one of their priorities for keeping sprayers reliable.

Get your equipment checked with the National Sprayer Testing Scheme Since 2003, the NSTS has been a major part of the UK agriculture industry. Their testing scheme has become instrumental in ensuring that UK sprayers satisfy the requirements of the UK crop assurance scheme, supermarket protocols and the Sustainable Use Directive.

The NSTS test around 16,500 pieces of pesticide application equipment each year, mainly sprayers, and with 270 independent test centres across the UK, it couldn’t

The test consists of 47 items. The first 30 must be satisfied to receive a pass, the subsequent 10 are advisory and the final 7 are optional. It covers all components of the sprayer and ensures the machine is working correctly. Components tested include control systems, hoses, pipe work, nozzles, filters, pumps, tank, chemical induction systems and booms. It is also suggested that computer control systems are serviced to maximize efficiency.

When preparing your sprayer for the test, your machine needs to be in clean condition and your PTO must be fully guarded. There is no specific time frame for the test, as this will be dependent on the complexity of machine.
