Mass customisation Mass customisation, the mass production of individually tailored products and services, is the new business trend within industry and the service sector.

Customers of today are no longer satisfied with standard products. They want a product that fully meets all their specific requirements. To meet all these different needs, manufacturers are in search of ways to introduce custom products to the market in a cost-effective way.

Configurators Modular production is one of the options, but this only allows the customer to adapt parts of the product.

Another trend is the use of configurators, such as Kramp's Cylinder Configurator. This configurator enables the customer to create a product design independently, without relying on support from engineers, which can be costly. In the future, manufacturers will make increasing use of 3D printing as a tool to produce customer specific goods in a cost-effective manner.

Mass customisation will be a key concept for the future, both for Kramp and for its customers.

Agritechnica Pathways

September 2015

In the Systems & Components hall at Agritechnica 2015, 'Pathways' guide visitors through four themed areas: efficiency, environment, reliability and safety. Each of these issues plays a major role in the agricultural sector and they are therefore all key considerations for manufacturers.

The Kramp OEM stand this year includes the Drive Assist Solution - the result of a cooperation project between Kramp, Monroc and Sampo/Black Bruin which ties in with some of these themes.

OEM support in Poland in full swing The expansion of our OEM customer base following the merger with Grene is creating interesting new opportunities, both in the Nordic countries and in Poland. Solid foundations, primarily consisting of parts supply business for drive technology, are already in place to make the most of these opportunities.

Technology is changing faster than ever before and the requirements of the customer have never been so diverse. For manufacturers, this presents major challenges for the development of machinery. They now need to work with a shorter time to market, more tailor-made solutions and shorter product life cycles. Kramp understands these challenges and is keen to support OEMs by partnering with them to develop their processes. Our technical support services support OEMs at every step along the way. In this edition of OEM Expert, we provide an insight into the options that Kramp technical support offers.

Marcin Szumingalski, head of OEM business in Poland, is busy sharing Kramp's knowledge and expertise in hydraulics among his team. A Sales Engineer will also be joining the team in Poland to support customers with technical solutions.

The close relationship between the Kramp OEM team and the Polish engineers is being developed further with support from the Technical Services team. This will allow us to assist customers with their engineering and prototyping processes.

Technical Services Even in today's digital hi-tech era, the people within a company are still its greatest asset. The development of people and ensuring that they are prepared for future challenges are therefore constant prerequisites for innovation and competitiveness.

In our Technical Services team, project engineers regularly attend training on hydraulics, drive technology, electrical technology and software developments.

This training ensures that our own sales engineers are provided with a high level of support which they, in turn, pass on to OEMs. Our customers benefit in that they have direct access to experienced engineers with knowledge of the latest technologies.

The market impact of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine

As a sales engineer, Harmannus Bakker is often asked to contribute towards finding technical solutions for customers.

"It is great to work with a customer to develop an innovative solution".

A combination of low commodity prices and the uncertainty created by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has made for a sharp fall in business over the past nine months.

The project that Kramp recently carried out with machine manufacturer Struik B.V. from Wieringerwerf is a prime example of this collaboration in practice. A while ago, Struik contacted Kramp requesting a solution for the hydraulics and controls of a new prototype for a chicory harvester.

Drive system

Gyrax opts for ROCdrive In the previous OEM Expert, we introduced the ROCdrive drive system.

This system is the result of a collaboration project between the French axle manufacturer Monroc, Kramp (hydraulics) and Black Bruin, a producer of radial piston motors for auxiliary drives. The ROCdrive system provides the towed equipment with additional torque on demand in challenging working conditions.

Where other combinations would get stuck, the ROCdrive solution keeps the vehicle moving effortlessly.

Claude Besson, owner and director of Gyrax, visited Monroc in early 2014. Gyrax is a French manufacturer of trailers and manure spreaders. ROCdrive caught the attention of Claude Besson, who immediately identified potential applications for customers. A special trailer was fitted with ROCdrive for contractor SARL Berger, a company that often transports silage and wood chips.

Technical solution Harmannus: "After I'd discussed Struik's requirements with the engineers, I put together a technical solution for the hydraulics and controls and gathered the components. The further development and assembly of the controls was then completed

by Kramp Technical Services. They also assembled the PVG32 valve blocks and made the hydraulic hoses to measure".

On-site testing The customer was able to install the parts immediately and put the machine into operation. During the initial tests in the field, a Kramp service engineer took flow and pressure measurements to identify any tweaks that were needed. These tests provided important information that the customer can use when the machine is produced in series.

Added value "The agriculture sector is at the forefront when it comes to innovation. Customers are increasingly recognising how we can support them as a partner in such processes. With our technical services such as engineering, prototyping and assembly, we offer added value that the customer really benefits from. We aren't just a supplier of parts to our customers", says Harmannus, "We are also a supplier of knowledge".

With orders falling, the European agricultural machinery industry is faced with a situation it has never encountered before - with reports of unsold machines being returned to the manufacturer. Production has been adjusted based on this trend.

'Flat-lining' development The outlook is one of 'flat-lining' development, without immediate evidence of an increase in demand at any point in the near future. For France and Germany, where the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has had a significant impact, further decline is expected, albeit to a lesser extent than previously observed. Most companies have two months' worth of orders in their books: the lowest order level in five years. As a result, workforces are being reduced in size and further reductions, although less significant, are predicted.

Challenge These difficulties have arisen in a year in which the three major European agricultural fairs also demand resources from manufacturers. Agritechnica 2015 for one is fully booked. However, periods like this give businesses the chance to really focus on efficiency and pay attention to concepts such as lean manufacturing and total cost of ownership. But it isn't only manufacturers who face the challenge of preparing for the upturn - suppliers are in exactly the same boat.

Comer Industries recently introduced a number of new transmissions for a range of applications, including mixing wagons: The A-613 parallel gearbox with electric actuator and the new PGA-2100 VM planetary gearbox.

The A-613 gearbox is ready to be integrated into an ISOBUS system.

The gearbox is fitted with helical gears and an electrical actuator with two or three positions, resulting in an easy-to-shift and quiet gearbox.

The PGA-2100 is specially designed for applications with a high load and high torque. The compact design, combined with its technical performance, makes this drive highly suitable for use in vehicles such as mixing wagons.

Comer products are characterised by their high reliability and long service life, helping to avoid downtime in valuable machines.

European OEM Business Manager This Gyrax trailer would come to attract more interest during the French trade fair SIMA. The trailer was delivered to the customer on the 1st of May and put to work in the field the very same day.

Order hydraulic hoses online quickly and easily After the successful launch of the online Cylinder Configurator, available through the webshop since November, Kramp is now working on a Hose Configurator for hydraulic hoses. This online tool will also make ordering much easier and faster.

The required specifications can be entered via a number of tabs, allowing you to select the type of hose and connectors you need, and indicate whether or not you would like us to provide the hose cleaned and sealed - all with just a few clicks. Once you are satisfied with your hose, simply click the button to add it to your online shopping cart.

We are also working on the option of set delivery for hoses. The launch date for the Hose Configurator is not yet confirmed, but we will keep you informed.
