It’s November 2016, the high season is just around the corner in Krabi, the clouds will start to part, the sun will start to shine down on us, the temperature will slowly rise for the next 5 months until it hits it’s peak temperatures in April. We’re all very excited for another great season in Krabi, with every new season brings new faces, ideas, restaurants, hotels and so much more. We want to take a minute to acknowledge the passing of a great individual, the passing of a leader, the passing of Thailand’s father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who unfortunately passed away on October 13th. He was a great revered man, who was considered the father of Thailand, whose birthday was celebrated yearly as father’s day and whose picture can be sen in businesses, homes and public places throughout the kingdom. He help the throne for 70 years and helped develop much of Thailand’s agricultural production, temple, hospital, and public works construction projects. he will be dearly missed by all of his children.

AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.
KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay.

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach.
KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

Ao Nang, Krabi’s main tourist town has been growing steadily over the past decade, much of this growth is driven by the influx of tourists visiting Krabi and expatriates who choose to take up residence here. Disabled man Pan Meunyot, 84, has travelled on his tricycle wheelchair from his northeastern hometown in Buri Ram’s Lahan Sai district to Bangkok to pay respects to King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The sufferer of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal neurological disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, finished the seven-day trip yesterday morning at the Grand Palace, receiving a warm welcome from fellow mourners. With his wheelchair bearing a portrait of the King, he described his action as “my humble farewell to His Majesty the King”. Many mourners had their photo taken with Pan and congratulated him for completing his journey. With tears brimming in his eyes, he smiled and said he was glad to finally be there. He signed a farewell message to the beloved monarch. Pan said he was determined to reach Bangkok to express his gratitude for the many items he had received help from the King’s royal projects including his wheelchair and prosthodontics. He also said he had applied His Majesty’s teachings to his own life to make him more content despite his illness. Pichit Sidadee accompanied Pan on the trip and said he had never felt so close to the King. Government Spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had praised Pan and had instructed the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to take care of his health, meals and transport during his stay in Bangkok and facilitate his return to Buri Ram. Another wheelchair-bound man with the same illness, Sathit “Uncle Mhee” Janrangsi, 54, departed his hometown Phitsanulok province last Sunday en route to the Grand Palace and by yesterday morning he had reached Angthong province. He is being accompanied by 28-year-old restaurant owner Natthapat Sirimongkolpan, who joined Sathit on his bicycle in Nakhon Sawan’s Phayuha Khiri district. They are expected to reach Bangkok on Tuesday. Sathit said he loved His Majesty so much that every year he had done the same trip, except on those occasions he had sign messages wishing the King good health. He said he was struck by grief when he heard about the King’s passing, and he was determined to travel to Bangkok on his wheelchair to express his love and loyalty for the monarch and to join others in mourning him. READING THE GREEN Besides its stunning islands and bustling cities, one can come to Thailand and enjoy Thai traditions which have grown immensely in popularity in foreign countries, of these we have Thai boxing, Thai massage, Thai cooking, Thai dance, Thai music and also Thai golf. Golf arrived in Thailand during the reign of King Rama V, a hundred years ago. It was first played by nobles and other elitists of high society but since then, things have certainly changed. Over the past decade or so, the popularity of golf in Thailand has escalated; played both by local Thais and visiting foreign tourists and expatriates. Golf can be played in Thailand every day of the year. During the rainy season, from June to October, all the courses have drainage systems so they are still playable. The hot season is a good time for playing golf and getting a suntan, this runs through March and April. The cool season is probably the freshest time of the year though for golfing in Thailand from November to February. Like other Asian countries, the standard of golf played in Thailand by local golfers has rocketed over the past few years. Thongchai Jaidee is the country’s most successful golfer, winning a handful of major international tournaments. It’s happened again, another year of self mutilation and destruction much to the amazement of the onlookers…well those who take a glance up from their cameras that is. Honoring the nine emperor gods at Chinese temples throughout Southeast Asia on the ninth moon (or ninth month) of every year, the Vegetarian Festival - or Gin Je in Thai - has been celebrated throughout southern Thailand for over 100 years. During the festival, devotees typically begin their processions at temples which are close to rivers or oceans, as it is believed that the spirits travel through water easier during their journey to earth.

According to Taoist mythology, these nine emperors are the fundamental gods responsible for keeping all functions of earth in order. They are represented in the sky by the Ursa Major constellation, which includes the Big Dipper. Temples dedicated to one or more of the nine emperor gods will act as a traveling point for them to channel through to the devotees, who embody them during the festival processions. During the channeling, the devotees enter into a trance-like state and march through the streets for hours, mutilating themselves or impaling with various objects such as swords, razors, axes or anything else they can find. There are many different variations of the festival but all are based on the same principles of worshipping and paying homage to the nine emperor gods. In Thailand, the festival is an alteration of its original foundations as each region of Southeast Asia has its own adaptation. As the legend goes, the current ceremony was started in 1825 in Katu, Phuket by a group of Chinese fisherman who fell ill with Yellow Fever. As other medical methods to cure them failed at the time, they sought an alternative. They men embarked on an adventurous journey to try a new method of cleansing their bodies, adhering to a strict vegetarian diet. They also believed that a cleansing of the flesh was necessary, so they harmed themselves physically either through cutting, piercing or other forms of inflicting pain. The festival has since become one of the main festivals of Southern Thailand, spanning over nine days with preparations beginning weeks before. The festival has become somewhat of a spectacle in Thailand. The most popular procession is paraded through Phuket Old Town and is the largest in the region, but Krabi’s procession has steadily grown annually. Some even say it is the better festival to visit, mainly because few tourists come to spectate, making access to key viewing points relatively easy. It is still an event for the locals, and by the locals with a large production, without the frenzy of crowds in Phuket. Year after year the types of mutilation seem to intensify, appearing to be a competition of who

can use the biggest and most intense objects to impale their faces with. Bicycles, wrenches, and gas pump handles are all now regular occurrences. What will be next? Watching the procession in Krabi Town this year was a fascinating sight of varying levels of pain and endurance that devotees subjected themselves to in the name of their gods. It was quite a testament to their faith. The piercings and mutilations were only a part of the days affairs as we witnessed the parade from start to finish. The first thing we noticed was the lack of shoes. This was a simple, trivial observation, but imagine walking through the streets of a town where temperatures approach 40 degrees Celsius, with no protection from the sun or the hot asphalt. Interestingly, the devotees don’t prepare themselves through the year by developing a pain threshold. Many of the devotees are just ordinary citizens with ordinary lives living in Krabi, some of which we recognized, but with spears going through their cheeks. Devotees hold the belief that the nine emperor gods channel through them and remove all pain inflicted during the event. Judging from the looks on some faces however, there was a clear distinction between those possessed by outside powers and those still grounded. It is a sight to witness those feeling the pain, watching them become delirious during the march and needing to step out. Three men with large items stuck through their cheeks had to be removed from the parade due to their dehydration and medical attention needed. Last year, three men died from loss of blood, but those who perish on a holy day are believed to transcend into a better life through reincarnation. Although men seem to hold down the bulk of the attention the festival is not restricted to them; plenty of women also participated as well. As many as 100 women with small spears through their faces were parading through the streets of Krabi Town, each of them with little to no signs of pain or distress on their faces.

In addition to the already gruesome spectacle is the use of firecrackers, and the dancing throughout the burning explosions (again with no shoes on). Teams of two carried spirit houses on their shoulders, and when firecrackers were ignited, devotees would run towards them, jumping and dancing through them. It’s quite incredible to watch people who look as though they should be feeling such high levels of pain and distress, walking through the streets casually and calmly. It’s a sight to behold. The Vegetarian Festival is a must see for anyone visiting Thailand during the ninth moon (usually around the end of September) of 2015, but not for the faint of heart.

KAYAKING IN AO THALANE Kayaking and seakayaking are great ways to explore Krabi’s amazing sight without damaging the environment. Slow and silent, these sturdy “sit-on-top” craft can move almost unnoticed through different coastal ecosystems, passing mangrove, canyons and caves.

Ao Thalane is one of the most beautiful mangrove forests in Thailand. About twenty kilometers from Krabi Town, this section of the coast is covered in dense foliage that wraps all the caves cliffs and amazing shaped Karsts. This area is perfect for a kayak cruise around the small inlets, caves and hidden lagoons and the Karst Mountains provide the backdrop for this area with its complex network of channels to meander through the dense mangrove. Kingfishers, Herons and crab eating Macaques inhabit this area along with ever present monkeys who will keep you company and sometimes even hitch a ride on your kayak. The area is undeveloped and tranquil and with caves and steep cliffs jutting straight out of the water. You will enjoy great spots for taking photos of real Krabi’s nature. The routes followed are relatively easy and you will be cruising on flat calm water so it is quite within the capabilities of first time kayakers or kids. You can ask a tour guide to give you basic instruction of using the paddles and the kayak and he can also provide life jackets. Most of the kayaks have three seats although it is normal to use one kayak for two adults. It is quite unconvenient to have three people paddling, so it is best if one adult goes in one kayak with one child
if they both want to paddle or with two adults and one younger child not paddling. No two days in the mangroves are quite the same. On some days the place is alive with wildlife, birds calling, monkeys hooping, lizards splashing and cicadas singing away. On other days, it is very quiet, like everyone is asleep. You never know quite what you’ll get but it is always magical. High tide is generally the best time to go, there are many more channels that you can paddle through and lagoons and caves to see. But even at low tide, it is still a wonderful place and you will be able to see more of the caves and all the nature that lives in the muddy ecosystem. You may have to paddle back the way you came, but it is still beautiful to see and as the water drops, more and more of the incredible root system comes into view along with all the wildlife that lives in the mud. Then there are the birds that come to pick up all the fresh food on offer. HOW TO GO THERE: Ao Thalane is thirty five kilometers from Krabi Town; take Route Number 4 from Krabi Town and turn left to Route 4033, then continue driving for another fifteen kilometers. www.krabi-magazine.com

The use of hands to grab objects is an ability we sometimes take for granted. The opposable thumb lends it’s ability to grasp a stick or a rock and move it easily, is a skill not enjoyed by many other living forms on this planet. We share this skill with is a distant relative, Monkeys and apes. Diverging from these species many millenia ago humans have since evolved and taken this simple skill to a whole new level creating computers, robots, airplanes, cars and everything else we all use in our daily lives. But this simple skill still fascinates us and those species on this planet who can exhibit the same behavior will continue to dazzle us for generations to come.
Thailand is full of these curious, fascinating creatures, they live at temples, cities and of course in trees. Grabbing at human trash, turning over rocks inspecting everything they can get their hands on. These amazing creatures are always looking for things to explore, inspect and learn from. Sometimes using the various objects they find around as tools to get to something else.
These relatives come in all shorts of shapes and sizes, fat, skinny, tall, short, black, colorful . They all live in different ecosystems but most of them still live in the tropical equatorial part of the globe, making them even more alluring and primal to those of us living in the temperate part of the globe.
Their adorable faces and curious nature makes them unique and fascinating creatures to watch and learn from. Living in similar patriarchal social circles as we humans do, monkeys exhibit many of the same social cues and needs as humans do. They will typically have a male leader for their troop, and rival troops will frequently battle one another over territory. Krabi is home to a number of different species of monkies, species such as the dusky langur (commonly found on Railay), crab eating macaques, gray macaques and others. They are fascinating and special creatures that you can watch form a far, but we don’t recommend feeding or getting too close to them as they are wild animals and should be allowed to live and thrive in their natural habitat. Our tip for visitors: Be careful and lock your balcony window, Monkeys have been known to come in looking for food and other toys.

wat Bang Riang Outside of Ao Nang, on the edges of Krabi province there lies a truly stunning temple complex; Wat Bang Riang.
Bang Riang temple (or in Thai, Wat Bang Riang) is located on the top of Khao Lan mountain in Thap Put area, it is 30 km from Pang Nga town and just over the boarder of Krabi’s western most district Ao Luk.

The Bang Riang Temple complex certainly will leave a mark in your memory, from it’s wide open stunning vistas, to its incredibility detailed statues and tapestries there is no shortage of impressive eye candy. As is relatively common in areas of Southern Thailand, Was Bang Riang combines both Thai and Chinese architectural styles. The actual temple complex consists of three main areas: One where monks keep some of Buddha’s cremated remains, in the center of the main temple there is a giant statue of a sitting Buddha, the last area can be seen off in the distance from the main temple area, it is Guan Yin goddess, surrounded by a great tropical forests. On either side of the entrance to the temple from the parking area two massive five headed Nagas snakes that wind and twirl up the walkways railing. a small tower built on top in a traditional Thai style. This is to keep the Buddhist relics safe for future generations to come. The temple of Chedi Phutthathambanlu stands one hundred and nine meters high on the Khao Lan hilltop. Inside the Chedi, you can see the altar on which lies some remains of Buddha’s bones, the walls are decorated with ancient paintings depicting religious scenes and images of mythical creatures from Bhuddha’s life. The three headed elephant Erawan, guardians Yakshas, lions and the Garuda birds, all of these are protecting the Buddhas relicts. Don’t forget to change 60 baht to coins before entering the Chedi so you can carry out a Buddhist ritual of Wat Bang Riang. Once inside the open courtyard you will notice a round hallway around the Chedi decorated with 60 golden Buddha sculpts each with a hole for coins. Make a wish and go around the circle putting November | 2016
coins into each Buddha sculpture. The story goes that if after the last coin was dropped you can remember your wish, then it will come true. As you walk around the Chedi, you will find an observation point with a garden and terrace, which offers a magnificent view of the green mountains surrounding the temple as well as the massive statue of both Buddha and Guan Yin. The walkway to the statues is a staircase, decorated throughout with plants, ponds and sculptures. Chinese goddess Guan Yin (in Chinese) or Kuan Im (in Thai) is known in Thailand as the goddess of mercy. Many Thai’s also believe that Guan Yin brings them good luck and prosperity. In Buddhist hierarchy Guan Yin goddess stands on a step down from Buddha, she protects women and children, and all who suffer, by blessing them with awakening and enlightenment. Curious
fact, Guan Yin is not actually a “she”, the goddess just conditionally refers to the feminine. Guan Yin is more of a divine being, which can appear in both women’s and men’s guise. In Indian and Old Chinese traditions Guan Yin used to be represented as a man; it is only in today’s Buddhism which a woman’a appearance has been given. By the way, Kuan Im statue in Wat Bang Riang is the tallest temple in Southern Thailand. In front of the monument there is a small pool with the sculpture of Phra Mae Thorani – a chthonic goddess from Buddhist mythology. According to traditions she is typically represented as a young woman wringing the cool waters of detachment out of her hair to drown the demon Mara, who has been sent to tempt Gautama Buddha during his meditation under the Bodhi Tree. Phra Mae Thorani symbolizes earth and is also called “Mother of Earth”.

Keep right, and the uphill path leads you to the golden statue of Gautama Buddha meditating in lotus position - the largest Buddha in the region. Buddha is covered by a roof made up by a number of five headed Nagas. This kind of Buddha refers to the Sabbath day and is called Phra Nak Prok. Before the statue there is a small alley with sculptures of lions, elephants and Yakshas, as well as a sculpture of the Phra Mae Thorani goddess. On one side of the Wat Bang Riang there is a number of ‘Kuti’, they are basically special houses, which are built for the monks that have stopped at the temple for meditation or to partake in ceremonies. After your visit to Wat Bang Riang you can relax and have some local food or a drink in the café on the open terrace looking out at the stunning expanses of rocky green mountains. The café is located at the opposite side of the parking lot from the entrance.
A bit of history... The temple is mainly known as a Wat Bang Riang, however, it has an alternative name that sounds like Wat Rat Upatam. Its construction began in the late 1980’s by order of His Majesty King Rama IX, and the story of its establishment is quite interesting. In the 80s a pilgrim monk named Lung Por Chai arrived at the small village of Thap Put, where his mother recently moved and fell ill. He had to settle down and take care of her. He noticed that in the Thap Put area there is was no temple, and the locals would not hold a proper funeral service. So with the support of the locals, he decided to build a temple for everyone to use, and not just a humble abode of Dharma, but a godly and impressive temple. According to his words, the idea of such a majestic construction was to attract people to the temple and incite an interest in Buddhism. He believed that the more beautiful the place is, the more likely it will be visited. The name of Wat Rat Upatam literally translates to “temple, supported by locals”. The original cost of construction for Wat Bang Riang was 70 million Thai baht. The recent additions have been overseen by a the monk Lung Por Chai who continues to reside on the property and manage the current renovations and planning for future additions/renovations.
How to get to the Wat Bang Riang temple from Krabi Temple Wat Bang Riang is located 82 km form Ao Nang, Krabi, 30 km north-east from the Phang Nga city, 11 km from the of Thap Put village. From Krabi, take the route № 4 towards Phuket. After you pass the border crossing pointer of Krabi and Phang Nga provinces, after about 2 km turn right on the 411V highway. Follow the signs to the Thap Put and the temple Wat Bang Riang. The way from Krabi to Bang Rian temple takes approximately 1 - 1.5 hour, depends on traffic.
Important note Before visiting the temple, remember that Wat Bang Riang - is a functioning Buddhist temple whose rules must be respected. In the temple area it is respectful to wear a closed light-colored clothing (shoulders and knees must be covered), and shoes should be taken off before going inside the Chedi. In case if you came here unprepared, you can buy a special shirt to go inside the temple area, they sell these close to the parking area. A donation of any size is customary to leave in the temple, however, it is optional. Even any little donation monks welcome with gratitude.

Experimenting with different parts of the body and different mediums is a great way to find a desired image. Changing the color and length of ones hair, painting fingernails with interesting patterns and designs, trying different foundations to find ones true complexion. It’s all part of the process of finding ones image and transforming into it. But a much more interesting prospect is when the game is turned professional, proper artists can understand your face, colors, shadows, areas to highlight and generally bring out your beauty you might not have known exists. Who is ready to change your image completely and radically is a person who will continue to try different designs and looks in order to find that perfect image. See and create a new YOU - an easy, bright and beautiful self, we all have this person inside us, sometimes it needs the right guidance and coaching to bring out. This past month I helped a number of women transform themselves. It was an amazing experience and one that taught me more about myself and how to help others. No special occasion was needed, just spending time with some truly remarkable woman and helping them see another side of themselves they never knew. Stepping back in time 6 months ago, I was a young mother in constant concern. Was my daughter alright, did she have enough food, was she playing enough, was she ok? The more time I spent on her, the less I spent on myself and this I noticed everyday I looked in the mirror. Then one day came, and the desire to spend the day in a special way popped into my mind, a day for nobody but me, a day when I could feel the way I wanted to feel, beautiful. To escape from the everyday worries and feel like a confident, beautiful woman, I didn’t know what I would do, but after meeting a young and talented photographer I knew photography was the secret.

Getting in front of a lens allowed me to open up more and see another side of myself. Looking at the photos afterwards gave me perspective and It showed me how taking a few steps back and looking at myself from the outside could change my whole image. The photos which I saw afterwards astonished me. I didn’t think I could look like that. After my experience I wanted to share this feeling with others. Then the idea was born; get an education and learn how to create beauty in anything. I decided to focus on makeup and also the art of hairdressing. Soon after I successfully graduated from makeup and hairdressing school I began inviting friends to join me in my project to share the same experience I enjoyed. Thus was born the transformation project. From the traditional looks of soft skin and sheer determination to ragtime flapper girl and runway concept fashion photography I had a wonderful time working with a range of women. Showing their inner beauty and bringing out the fire in their eyes. It was a great experience working with these people and I look forward to more women who also want to see themselves transformed. The process of sitting down with a person, looking into her eyes, studying the curves and shapes of her nose, neck, eyebrows and everything else was like reading a blueprint. Seeing where I need to add foundation, blush, color tones and so on was just the beginning, it is like reading a book, the curves are the vowels and the shadows are the the exclamation points. What I need to fill in and what I wanted to make standout become clear as I study a face. It is a wonderful experience transforming people and is one I want to keep on giving and sharing with many more.

These faces come in all shapes and sizes; dark, light, long, short, islamic, buddhist, old, young, timid, aggressive and so many more. Now these are the people who drive our longtail boats, the people who sweep our streets, the men who paint the buildings and work security details.

THESE ARE THE FACES OF AO NANG. Ao Nang a place of great diversity not only in terms of its visitors but in terms of the locals who have built this little beach town from its humble coconut plantation beginnings some 40 years to one of the major tourist hubs in the southern Thailand. Some 40-50 years ago this built up city you find yourself relaxing by the pool in, slurping ice cream while strolling on the streets or slamming our face full is spicy Tom yum was just a variety of coconut, palm and rubber plantations, no roads could be found in the area let along a joule of electricity. Slowly over the years more and more people from Krabi town and the surrounding districts and provinces migrated to this little beach area. Everyone bringing with them their knowledge, traditions and religion, this is how you can see on many areas of Ao Nang Muslims and Buddhists Thais talking and joking side by side. Indian and Burmese workers waiting tables and cooking up garlic filled naan. Local fisherman make their way to the piers daily to bring home the bounty of the sea, filling our many restaurants with world class Krabi cuisine. Condominiums, hotels, villas and guest houses fly up thanks to the dedicated hard work from the labor force who come from all around the country and abroad for work. Ao Nang has become a nexus for cultures to blend together, for ideas to flow freely with less government red tape than other parts of the planet. Walking the streets, take a look around at the many different cultures that now call this place home. Take in the smells that permeate the air and seem to change from block to block, take in the richness and diversity that lives and thrives here. These are the people that make out little town unique and special. These are the faces of Ao Nang.

Mr. Jimmy has been playing at the Phra Nang Inn Bar for more than 6 years now and he has acquired many frequent followers. Not only the expats who live here, but also tourists who regularly spend their Holiday in Ao Nang. So Jimmy has become womewhat of a sensation. In his formative years Jimmy performed in Manhattan New York, in several bands before being drafted into army at the age of 20. He was stationed in Germany. There he worked for 3 years as an interpreter for the American Consulate. During that same time he performed in Schwabing - Munich’s entertainment mecca. It did not take long before the music scene became aware of him and he got his first recording contract in Germany. As it is so often is in the life, Jimmy opted to stay in Germany, founded a family and devoted himself entirely to his music. He worked with international stars like Melanie, Donavan and German Jazz-rock “great” Klaus Doldinger’s Passport. Klaus Doldinger has strongly influenced the musical tastes of countless German music lovers. Creating Fantastic music which Jimmy helped create. 2016 marks the year when Klaus Doldinger released an Anniversary CD containing many of his greatest hits including some of his collaborations with Jimmy. The CD is currently Nr. 1 on the German Jazz charts. A part of the records success is due in part to the talents of Jimmy. Yes, Jimmy is multi-talented. He is a composer, producer, arranges music, plays guitar and sings. There is no doubting some of his greatest achievements include: composing music for TV shows like the famous German evergreens series "Tatort" and "The Investigator" which has aired in over 100 countries.
He has also released 7 CD’s of original material on such prestigious labels as, Warner Brothers Atlantic and CBS (now Sony). But sooner or later everyone needs a holiday and so it was that Mr. Jimmy one day travelled to Thailand to explore people, the country and the famous Thai cuisine. During his vacation he fell in love with the place and decided to stay here. That was in 2008. After one year in Bangkok he moved to Krabi where he now calls home His love for music has not diminished over the years which one readily sees and hears while watching him. His performances have all veritable concert atmosphere. He produces, and arranges all his back tracks in his own studio in Ao Nang which lends a personal touch to his unique renditions. It’s also interesting to hear Jimmy’s comments and descriptions of each song. There are background stories that connects his personal life with the songs or give insights to the songs origins. One cannot wait to hear the next story and the next song. An evening with Jimmy goes by very quickly and leaves one thoroughly entertained, listening and singing along to all of the old and new songs alike. This, combined with one or two cool drinks at reasonable prices makes an evening with Jimmy at the Phra Nang Inn a special and unforgettable experience. And ………..it is not a dream, it’s a reality. DENGUE FEVER: SYMPTOMS, CAUSES AND TREATMENT Most people are aware of the most common diseases carried by mosquitos such as Yellow Fever and Malaria. However, many are less familiar with another mosquito born virus, Dengue Fever. It can be found in 128 countries of the world and is most prevalent in tropical and sub-tropical countries and makes an appearance in many more temperate climate countries as well. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says that there could be up to 400 million cases of Dengue fever each year and the World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that worldwide, there are 22 000 deaths from Dengue Fever, mostly among children. The numbers have increased in recent years due to a better reporting and diagnosis and with the movement of urban populations into rural areas. HOW IS DENGUE FEVER CONTRACTED? The disease itself can only be passed to humans from an infected mosquito. The offending breed of mosquitos are identified by their stripes that are light grey to white. It cannot be passed from human to human but first has to be carried by a mosquito host. WHAT ARE DENGUE FEVER’S SYMPTOMS? The onset of the disease can be very similar to a case of the flu. Symptoms, which usually develop in three to eight days after exposure, are chills, fever up to 104° F, headache, pain upon moving the eyes, loss of appetite, lower backache and pain in the legs and joints. These will subside after a few days and a couple of days later the fever will return and a red, itchy rash can break out all over the body, except the face. Also, the palms of the hand and soles of the feet may turn red and become swollen. WHAT TO DO? If you think you may have been exposed to Dengue Fever and develop these symptoms, you must see a physician immediately. Testing has been perfected and can identify the antibodies in the blood that will occur if the fever is present and a diagnosis can be quickly given.
HOW TO TREAT DENGUE FEVER? Since the dengue fever is a virus, no specific medications or antibiotics have been developed to treat it. With rest and good hydration most people will make a full recovery. However, a severe form of the disease known as Dengue Hemorrhage Fever (DHF) can develop and the infected person can begin bleeding from the gums and in the digestive system along with vomiting and stomach pain. DHF can also get more serious involving the heart and lungs and needing hospitalization. Self-use of no steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and aspirin is not recommended as they can promote bleeding and should be administered only under the supervision of a doctor. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or codeine are usually given to relieve pain. Dengue is fatal in less than 1% of the cases. The acute portion of the disease with fever and body pain will usually last about one to two weeks. The period of convalescence and the feeling of weakness may take several weeks to pass. SO HOW CAN I AVOID DENGUE IN THE FIRST PLACE? Good mosquito hygiene and common sense are your best weapons. When appropriate, wear long sleeves and clothes that will cover the legs. Sleep in mosquito-free spaces, keep windows and doors without screens closed to keep mosquitos out. Use insect repellents that contain DEET, they are effective in repelling mosquitos. Almost all “natural” repellents and vitamin patches will do absolutely nothing to keep mosquitos away. Mosquitos can detect the carbon dioxide exhaled in human breath, they will follow the trail back to you if you stay in one place too long. Also, mosquitos are poor fliers and have difficulty moving where there is wind. You can get some real relief from them on windy days and even sitting in front of the breeze stirred up by a fan can help keep them away. Enjoy your vacation in this beautiful and relaxing tropical location but be aware that trouble can come from small things in these wonderful places. Use common sense and avoid those irritating little mosquitos as much as possible. Be aware of Dengue Fever’s symptoms and seek for medical help if you begin to display them.

On the 13th of October 2016, Thailand and the world lost a great man, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Thailand is currently in the midst of a 1 month mourning period after the kings passing. Feeling sorrow and remorse since the passing of the great Bhumibol Adulyadej, the ninth monarch in the Chakri Dynasty. Thai’s throughout the kingdom are in the process of passing the crown to the next successor, Maha Vajiralongkorn. He was the worlds longest serving monarch, holding the crown of Thailand for the past 70 years. Loved by both young and old from all over Thailand, he was a man of principle, he had a great love for his people and showed this in his actions. His love for Thai people can be seen since his assenting to power in June 1946. Since his coronation he has implemented a number of projects both social and environmental throughout the kingdom to improve the lives of Thai people. Primarily his projects revolve around farming and agricultural practices but also he has done much to develop arts and sciences as well. Bhumibol Adulyadej’s picture adorns the walls of nearly every Thai house across the country. You could see photos of him and his wife on bridges, in schools, businesses and banks. Really everywhere one looks in Thailand there is a good chance you might catch a glimpse of his face. His belief for the development of his country started with the infrastructure; roads, farms, food etc. So this was the first of the many projects throughout Thailand which he focused his energy developing and helping to benefit. He sponsored growing strawberries, pumpkins, coffee and many more crops in Ching Mai and throughout the north of Thailand. He sponsored growing rubber and palm throughout southern Thailand. He also helped usher in Tourism to the kingdom by helping build roads, airports, hospitals, temples and many other necessary places to host travelers from around the globe. His influence was far and wide, his history will be of nothing short of his actions in life. King Bhumibol Adulyadej was a man for his people, a man who wanted to see his people grow and his nation become great. His success is evident as Thailand has one of South East Asia’s most vibrant and bustling economies. From tourism to manufacturing and everything in between. Thailand is growing in leaps and bounds and much of this success is due to the programs and initiatives set in place by the late king Bhumibol Adulyadej. The world was aware of his passing as all major media networks broke the news to their respective countries only shortly after his passing. He was a diplomat of sorts for Thailand meeting with worlds leaders from Russia, China, America and many other countries. If you would like to show your respect for his passing please do so by not wearing brightly color clothes, preferably black if you have them. Also drinking alcohol in public and making lewd gestures and faces is also not recommended.

THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks, and guest houses that cater to newcomers. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast – hence it’s often referred to as “The Sunset Island” – and can be reached by road. Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao, and Phra Ae have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin, and Ba Kan Tiang, and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and are less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal-clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

unplug in KOH JUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?
We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth

weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here.
While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the
island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.
Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help. We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers. There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.

WHAT DOES the term “ RAI “ MEAN ? A rai is a unit of area, equal to 1 square sen or 1,600 square metres (40 m × 40 m), and is used in measuring land area for a cadastre or cadastral map.
