Recently, I was fortunate enough to join General Manager Stefan Heintze for an

The menu that was placed before me was almost bewilderingly extensive, with a wide selection to choose from. I decided, on this occasion, to dine “Western-style” and to start, I picked ‘Seared Foie Gras’ , its smooth creamy texture served in a delicious port wine sauce, garnished with Fresh Mango Salsa. For a main course, I was extremely tempted by ‘French Filet Charolais’ and by its cousin ‘Australian Wagyu Filet’ , but, with the ocean just paces from our table, I selected ‘Barracuda Filet’ in a pesto crust, accompanied by sautéed spinach. Meaty and full flavored, this proved, for me, an inspired choice, and I really can’t remember when I have enjoyed a dish from the sea as much as on this occasion. The menu is matched by a considerable international wine list, and the warm hospitality and personalized service from gracious staff with endearing smiles

enhances the relaxing, tranquil ambiance of the restaurant. . Stefan is an excellent, amenable host, and the evening passed quickly; over coffee we were joined by Executive Chef Mario Drewes, Berlin-born and trained, with, as I discovered, extensive global experience, having previously held high level appointments in England, Borneo, Kuwait and here in Thailand. Stefan explained that he has brought a new level of international culinary expertise to Tides and, as I can testify, his friendly and amusing bonhomie delights and entertains guests on his regular table visits. Mario’s skills, creativity and amiable personality promise a lively and challenging future as Tides looks to raise the bar still further. Tides is not an exclusive haven for guests of Layana Resort & Spa, and visitors are always welcome. It is, though, a very popular destination and a prior reservation is advisable.

Krabi, a wonderful little province in the south of Thailand. Our province, Krabi is one of the highlights to Southern Thailand covering a massive area of land and islands, it is a place of great diversity and beauty. In the past few years Krabi has seen an large increase in the number of visitors and infrastructure growth and it shows no signs of slowing down. With the increase of Chinese, Singaporean and Malaysia tourists Krabi has built numerous new hotels, villas, restaurants and so on to accommodate for this large increase in the number of visitors. Even with the growth throughout Krabi, there is still plenty of unspoiled land to explore and adventure in. Just outside Ao Nang a short 10 minute drive you can get lost in dense jungles of Palm trees or dense jungle vegetation. The entire eastern side of Koh Lanta has yet to develop and become another major destination for visitors to frequent. There is still plenty to explore and grow in Krabi, it will be exciting to look back on Krabi in 10 years and see where we were so long, save this issue of Krabi Magazine and open it March 2027! WINDOW AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..

RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

ON KRABI KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

NAGA FEST; THE KLONG MUANG FESTIVAL IS BECOMING A MUST SEE EVENT Every year in Klong Muang due to the combined effort of it’s many resorts joint effort has started opening it’s beaches to the public for the amazing festival Naga fest. This year witnessed the largest celebration to date, with over 5,000 attendees over the 3 day celebration. Krabi is excited to begin opening and attracting tourists and locals alike to new and interesting destinations throughout Krabi province, this is only the most recent in a long line of soon to be regular popular locations to visit in Krabi. The performance included both Thai and foreign performers and a wide arrange spots lights swivelling all around the stage and off into the night. Every resort and sponsor was given space to showcase their food or drinks, so there were plenty of options to choose from, but there were also plenty of people to get in line for the food. If the trend prevails and the Naga Fest continues to grow you better bring your tent and get there a day before.

GOING TO BANGKOK? GIVE YOURSELF A LITTLE EXTRA TIME In a recent statement Thai Airways confirmed with its passengers that due to repairs on a number of the runways at Suvarnabhumi Airport which is expected to start March 3rd and finish around the end of May 6th (approximately 60 days in total) there could be delays. Acting president of Thai Airways Usanee Sangsingkeo urges travellers to avoid booking flights with short layovers as takeoff and landing times could be delayed during this construction period. Thai airlines is doing what it can to prepare for the delays such as having some planes loaded with enough fuel so they don’t have to wait the full refuelling time in between flights as well as preparing to Bangkok’s alternative airport Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) Thai Airways is the largest National carrier of Thailand and is traded on the Thai

THAILAND PROMOTED AS THE “WORLD’S JEWELLERY HUB”

Mr. Apisak Tantivorawong, Minister of Finance, revealed that the gems and jewellery industry is one industry with strong potential in Thailand as it is still an emerging sector but commands a high market The industry also brings about significant added value from upstream to downstream processes and provides employment for more than 900,000 people. The Ministry of Finance sees a good opportunity to develop Thailand as the World’s Jewellery Hub and has introduced a series of measures to facilitate cooperation with various related ministries, including the Ministries of Industry, Commerce, Labour and Tourism and Sports. These measures are: 1. Tax incentives • Exemption of import duties on raw materials including unprocessed pearls, diamonds and gold as well certain semi-finished and finished goods. • Exemption of value-added tax on raw materials and semi-finished goods. • Exemption of personal income tax for sales of raw materials. 3. Marketing support • Organise information sources on tourism at key gems and jewellery trading outlets and exhibitions in the Thailand Grand Sale, as well as promote quality gems and jewellery products to tourists via various media channels, including advertisements and promotions on airlines, as a means to increase international exposure of Thai gems and jewellery and promote sales (Ministry of Tourism and Sports). The Minister of Finance concluded that: “Being a hub for the production and trade in gems and jewellery will help facilitate an increase in trade in this sector in Thailand. Cooperation among various key agencies will help drive Thailand’s gems and jewellery products to be “product champions” that are accepted and renowned in the world market while tourists can be encouraged to come to Thailand to buy locally produced gems and jewellery. This will also benefit related businesses, such as hotels, shops, restaurants and more. This in turn will give a boost to the Thai economy and stimulate employment throughout the industry chain. he vast majority of the scientific community agrees that the vast spike in global tempts is a direct case form our own actions as human beings on this planet. Our presence and lifestyle has lead to the increased amount of CO2 gas particles in the air and the CO2 gas acts like a net trapping in heat from the sun. Virtually the only people who don’t agree with this simple fact re those lobbyists and politicians and of course employees for the fossil fuel industry. Although many governments have started taking steps towards offsetting their carbon footprint and possibly stopping or at least curbing the annual increase in new CO2 being edited into the atmosphere. The world is changing no way of denying it, some still don’t agree on why is changing (but they’ll come around soon enough), but one thing we can all unameously agree on is that the world is changing.

As we said before this increased change comes from the producing of CO2 and other gases such as CH4 and N2O. These gases come from many places in our planet and our industries, not all of them are man made but some of the largest contributors are from man and his actions. The first and foremost as we all can guess is of course the burning and refinement of fossil fuels, natural gas, petroleum, and coal. These are by in large the largest producers of green houses gases but would you expect that in close second is agricultural use

Thats right agricultural use, well whats agricultural use you might ask? Agricultural use is everything relating to growing crops and livestock as well as deforestation and carbon released from dead organic matter our to farming practices. The largest contributors to this category are by far growing crops and livestock. This is because

when livestock (primarily cows, sheep, pigs and goats) eat they build up food in their stomachs which needs to be broken down and digested. The difference between humans and livestock is that when livestock digest their food they produce a large (proportionally speaking when compared with humans) amount of methane gas. This methane gas is excreted through their anus and through the mouths’. It has been estimated that a single cow products between 30-50 gallons of methane gas daily, which might not sound like much but with and average of 1,400,000,000 cows worldwide thats a lot of methane gas. GETTING BACK TO BASICS, HOW IS THAT FUNNY STUFF ‘RUBBER’ WE SEE EVERYWHERE MADE AND WHO MAKES IT?

e got lucky enough to have one of the many rubber farmers in Krabi invite us out to their plantation to see who they harvest this versatile and ubiquitous product.

Rubber itself believe it or not is actually produced from trees, it’s the sap from ta specific family of trees which is harvested over a period of time, boiled and pressed into sheets. These sheets are then brought to factories and are further processed into the materials we all use in our everyday lives. Latex gloves, tires, shoe soles, cable protectors and so much more.

Many people have been under the impression that rubber is a synthetic material and although there are synthetic rubbers made from a variety of petroleum products the vast majority of it is harvested from trees throughout the tropics worldwide. In fact rubber trees were one of the main products which drove the colonisation of Africa. Today not much has changed with regards to the product, the harvesting methods and tools fashioned have varied slightly but it is still an ancient trade which is still practiced throughout the world today. Farmers usually wake up at early in the day around 2-3am when the night is at it’s peak and venture out into the fields to cut new lines in the trees bark allowing the sticky white sap to ooze out into makeshift bowls made from coconuts. The rubber is harvested during the night because the trees “run” faster during this time, their sap is transferred to the trees exterminates, its’ limbs and back again down to the trunk. this sap is the life blood of the tree and carries essential nutrients for the tree to grow and flourish. When this sap is flowing faster and more free it is easier to harvest and collect. The farmers which tend to the plantations can cover vast distances in relatively short time because in the middle of the night they don;t have the heat to battle against. the farmers usually work upwards of 6-8 hours every night and can cover and area os over 10,000 Sq. meters during this time. They work under the light of the moon and typically a small headlamp, the work is relatively peaceful and easy going but does involve some lever of danger as they are out in the forest in the middle of the night and typically alone. The coconuts which slowly fill with the white sap are harvested once they are full (typically every 2-3 days). The white sap which once oxidised becomes a harder material and looses it’s liquid properties is easier to remove from the coconut shells. The raw rubber balls are then loaded into the back of and old pickup truck. They are then brought to a transfer station where the rubber is boiled and turned back into a liquid and pressed into sheets. The farmers who take up the task are dedicated men and sometimes women who take to the fields daily often traveling great distances to their land plots where they work. They are simple people, people who live and thrive from the land but yet they all seem to have an understanding and appreciation for nature, a deeper connection that many of the city dwellers have forgotten or lost in their years in concrete jungles. Alongside Palm oil farming and rice farming, rubber farming is one of the main staples to the Thai agricultural economy. Thousands if not millions of Thai’s earn their livelihoods from here trees, and throughout the country not only in the south do these farms exist. In the north due to the dryer months rice is a more common commodity to grow but rubber plantations are still popular so farmers can diversify their crops and not rely on only 1 commodity. Throughout the south of Thailand and into Malaysia these farms are increasing in popularity as the knowledge of how to grow and sustain them is readily available and if a family owns only a small few areas they can earn a substantial income. The only drawback to rubber farming in Thailand is that the government sets the market price for the product. This is a good and a bad thing; on one hand the farmers know exactly what they will receive for the goods, but on the other hands this amount is relatively low and in other regions of the world substantially higher. Given the farmers can still enjoy a very healthy standard of living by farming these trees so there is little to complain about, there is always room for improvement in any system. Thailand is the worlds leading exporter of rubber world wide with 2014 bringing in $6,000,000,000USD in revenue to the country from rubber exports. Close second is Indonesia, then Malaysia and Vietnam in 4th place. Thailand’s exports account for some 34% of the worldwide rubber market, so keep that time mind when you see the product in your home country, there is a chance it came form the fields which surround your hotel. Thailand’s rubber trade is vast and influential, providing many Thai families with many options for living and surviving in a ever changing world.

KOH PODA An island just off the coast of Ao Nang, Koh Poda, has become one of the iconic islands of Krabi. Finding itself in a large number of postcards, coffee table books and general photos, it is a small and easily accessible island of magnificent beauty. Actually Koh Poda is part of the Thai National Park system, meaning it is a protected area of Thailand. There are therefore, no permanent structures on the island, only a simple beach bar stocked with Mojitos and Singha or whatever drink you might enjoy to accompany your pleasurable visit. Koh Poda is a short 10 minute long tail boat ride from Ao Nang beach and Railay bay. You can get tickets from the beachfront ticket office at Ao Nang for 100THB/seat each way so you can come and go from Koh Poda all day everyday from 8am-5pm. Behind Koh Poda are two other renowned islands, Koh Tub with the famous talay-way or sunken sandbar and Koh Gai (Chicken Island) with the rock shaped as a chickens head extending upwards from the islands southern point. The history continues… SELMA was born in 1926, built in Norway under the expert hand of Johan Anker, a renowned Olympic champion who won Gold in 1928 with a crew including the King of Norway. She’s a “6-metre” (36 footer, but her design is of the metre class), part of special breed of racing boats built in wood and used throughout the world to compete on places as diverse as Lake Huron, the San Francisco Bay, Lake Geneva, the Batlic Sea, the Atlantic or the Med. ERNE was built in 1936 in the USA by expert boat designers Sparkmans & Stephens and built at the Nevins shipyard, in New York. VINNIA in 1935 in Norway, built by Anker’s partner Christian Jensen. All the boats have been brought to Thailand to be renovated and put back on the racing circuit. Selma won the Classic division in the 2015 King’s Cup Regatta in Phuket and was on March| 2017

the podium in the Bay Regatta and the Top of the Gulf Regatta in 2016. ELEPHANT PARK Mountainous creatures.

These beloved creatures hold a special place in the hearts of all Thaiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, they are the national animal of Thailand and have been used in numerous situations throughout the kingdom.From battle war machines to lugging logs through dense jungle to just strolling around the jungles taking tourists on leisure walks through their homes, thee amazing creatures have a lot to offer. Elephants are something of a mystery to many of us throughout the globe, they are the largest land animal which is in existence, they enjoy one of the longest lifespans of any land mammal, they are highly intelligent and posses immense power yet still have a gentle side to them. With a habitat in the tropics and sub tropic regions of Africa and Asia they are not found in the Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Europe unless that is in a zoo. In Thailand they are natively from the forests which make up the landscape of Thailand. Once, ages ago thousands of wild Asian elephants roamed the forests freely from the north to the south, in our current day and age few are left to live naturally in the wild due to increased desire for their tusks and the ivory trade poachers often struck out for a quick profit. There are a number which live in Khao Yai national park in the Isan region of Thailand which are protected by a number of full time national park staff. Other than Khao Yai wild elephants have been hunted or captured so if you want to see a truly wild elephant your best shot is to head north to Khao Yai National park.

Many of these elephants which have been captured from the wild and put to work draw media attention on their treatment and conditions they’re forced to ensure just to get money for their owners and food for themselves. Many of these elephants are worked to exhaustion and not given adequate resting time in-between working days, they are also often beaten by their trainers, so somewhat that media attention is justified. On the other hand these trainers and owners are often tasked with massive areas of land to clear in limited time and a limited labor force in order to meet the quote and get paid, this money will go to feeding the elephants and their families, so it;’s somewhat of a catch 22. We don’t accept the inhumane treatment of elephants but for those in dire situations they must make choices under different circumstances. Although many of the elephants which end up at logging camps and elephant trekking camps throughout Thailand where the methods for training and keeping the elephants in line is often more on the rough side there is one such place which feel differently. Phang Nga Elephant Park located just a short 1.5 hours from Ao Nang is leading the way in elephant treatment and practices, using alternative methods and non-violent practices to gain the trust and respect of the elephants from the mahouts (elephant trainers). Although a bull hook or training stick is still present on the trainers in case of emergency typical training consists of pulling the elephants’ ears and guiding them using signals but most of all using positive reinforcement to train the elephants in the first place is the fundamental basis of the Phang Nga Elephant Park’s training philosophy.

At this date and time they take in trainers from around southern Thailand and teach them this effective method of training, afterwards these trainers can return to their villages where they came from and implement these same practices in their home villages. Thats not all The Phang Nga Elephant park has in the plan. They just recently secured a large 70 rai plot of land in the Northern hills of Phuket where they plan to build a clinic, rehabilitation area, training grounds and general living areas of mistreated, injured and old elephants in need of help. they project is planned to begin in the next 5-10 years and will be a great step forward for the region and the industry nationally as the more centres like this one the more accessible care and treatment for elephants is and as a whole the public opinion of the industry will be improved and the elephants lives will be better.

That beach just across the way, whats it’s name? I’ve heard so much about it but I just don’t know hoot get there, please help!

We know the feeling, you’ve heard the name, you’ve heard the rumours, you know it’s amazing, you know it’s worth visiting, but you just can’t find your way there. What to do. We’re here to help. Today we’re going to lift the veil on a little gem that you’ve probably heard of, you’re probably wanted to visit but just don’t know who or where to go. Long beach is the name and it’s not as far as you might think. Just adjacent to nopparat thara beach is a long stretch of relatively untouched beachfront which faces due south looking right at the locals islands around Ao Nang and Koh Phi Phi. Long beach is only a short 15 minutes drive from Ao Nang so it’s easy to get to. Once there you can sit down and dine at a number of the bungalow resorts such as Pan beach bungalows or Long beach bungalows, both serve some great food and drinks to enjoy as you lounge around and watch the waves lap against the shore. The beach itself is rather long, about 3 kilometres so if you’re into taking a nice stroll, this is a great spot, towards the western (or right) section of the beach the areas turns more into a fishing village where a number of local fisherman live as well as park their boats in-between trips. If you arrive here early enough and ask one of the bungalow resort if a fire BBQ is possible you might fancy a try at this, the owners and staff are friendly enough and are accommodating when possible.

THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

UNPLUG IN KOHJUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth

weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the

island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.

Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help. We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers. There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.
