editorial Times they are a changin’ as we roll into April and May once again changin’ as the crowds thin out, the weather heats up and the rumblings begin in the skies. Although we have been without any rain to speak of since the middle of December, the predictable downpours are on their way as we make our way towards the monsoon season. April and May tend to be a couple of the hottest months of the year here in Krabi, and it’s the perfect time to indulge in one of the most fun, refreshing and unmissable festivals in the calendar - Songkran. The Thai New Year is better known for it’s legendary “water fights” where everyone - and I do mean everyone - takes to the streets to chuck copious amounts of water over everyone else. The whole country goes a bit “ting-tong” for a few days from April 13th and it’s a fantastic ritual to be a part of. We take a more in-depth look at what it all means inside. For something completely different, we manage to get an interview with a lady who does some incredible work with the inmates of the infamous Bangkwan prison in Bangkok. With many of them serving life sentences or on death row they have little in the way of mental stimulation in the “Bangkok Hilton”, but with unprecedented access, Heather Luna-Rose has been working with these men to bring out their inner artist with a new project there. Read all about it within. As well as all this, we have our ever-popular sections on the best places to eat, books to read, places to go, lifestyle, health and fitness and much more. Krabi Magazine is your one-stop-shop for all things “Krabi”. We hope you have a great time in Krabi and take in everything our amazing province has to offer. Enjoy!

krabi the beaches AO NANG BEACH at 20km from Krabi Town, is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches, a long stretch of white sandy beach with limestone mountains as a backdrop. It has a wide range of accommodation and services and the main shopping street features restaurants, bars, pubs, souvenir shops, dive centers and tour agencies, massage centers and spas. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. Noppharat Thara beach, just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and at weekends. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach.

Klong Muang beach is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get the so deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

beaches islands hot springs tours national parks temples

Railay beaches are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvellous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, rocky islands emerging from the sea. Railay can only be reached by boat, a 15 minutes ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing course, hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. Neighbouring Tonsai lies at the base of a cliff that divides it form Railay West. Tonsai has a shallow beach with slow gradients out to sea which is profoundly affected by the tide. Koh Lanta beaches have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. Tubkaek beach is another real place to hide away; long, clean and peaceful, the area has breathtaking views over Koh Hong islands archipelago, and charming sunsets. From there you can venture inside the National Park and try a walking trail to a viewpoint and a waterfall.

The lookout point on Phi Phi Island has to be seen to be believed. A stunning vista over the azure waters of the Andaman Sea is the reward for the hike up. The shallow waters of the bays are alive with life and are the true image of Paradise.

the islands Koh Poda is the iconic island of Krabi and the first one you can see from the beach in Ao Nang. Hop on or hire a longtail, the local wooden boats with their picturesque prows and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters. Chicken Island should be next on your list as it’s right next to Poda. From the right angle it looks like a chicken you’ll know it when you see it! From where a walk on a sandy pathway that connects it to Koh Tub - which can only be accessed when the tide is low. The Koh Hong Islands demand to be explored by longtail boat or speedboat. The archipelago, a group of limestone islands with hidden caves and lagoons, is perfect for kayaking or snorkeling.

Koh Phi Phi - This is a MUST! Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life, caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the sand that Leonardo de Caprio stepped on while filming “The Beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay Koh Jum & Koh Siboya are small, unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. These islands give visitors the time to relax and re-charge their batteries. Koh Lanta, the developing island at the southern end of the province home to sea gypsies communities, where you will meet nature and tradition. A National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai and remote Koh Rok.

the nature Limestone mountains or karsts characterise most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the massifs of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools.

Tarnbok Khoranee National Park, in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 3040C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis in which to lift away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

The Krabi region has some of the finest scuba diving in the world with an incredible array of marine life beneath the waves. Colourful reef fish, turtles, rays, seahorses and even the giant whale shark are all visitors here.

Kayaking is a hugely popular activity in Krabi. The mangroves, caves & beaches provide plenty of great opportunities for paddling. The beaches of Kong Hong never cease to amaze with their crystal clear water and stunning white sand. With two glorious beaches, a lagoon and national park land, this is a real island paradise.

A hike to Wat Tham Seua, otherwise known as Tiger Cave Temple is exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately hugely rewarding. Once you’ve climbed the 1,257 steps that lead to the hilltop temple, you’ll be met by stunning views over the surrounding Thai countryside having been transformed into swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rain. Combine the temple with trips to other destinations like Sa Morakot or visit as a separate Krabi Town day trip and combine with trips to the market.

krabi Krabi is among the World’s best destinations for climbing. The Railay peninsula is home to the local climbing scene and is considered a Mecca for the sport. There are hundreds of bolted routes in the Railay area as well as rock-climbing schools that can provide guides and equipment. Railay, once the sole preserve of backpackers, has become a favourite holiday destination, combining 2 world class beaches, excellent dining and some stunning scenery.

Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets, with Krabi town boasting the largest covered market in southern Thailand. There’s a market somewhere every day of the week .

The so called ‘Emerald Pool’ is fed by a natural spring and gets its name from the glorious colour of its water. Perfect for swimming, there are also hot springs for soaking in.

kissing Public displays of affection are a big no-no all over Thailand, and should be avoided. No snogging in the restaurant please - or you will be faced with a sea of red-faced Thais all avoiding you.

dress It’s one of the great ironies of life that the one place in Thailand that has the best beaches, ocean and blazing hot sun, is also one of the most conservative when it comes to dressing. The predominantly Muslim population here in the South can take real offense to any tourist wandering into their shop with just a bikini on, or tiny shorts for the guys.

customs

I know, you’re on holiday and you deserve that tan - I understand. But here, bikinis are for the beach and only the beach.

shoes Easy this one - take your shoes or flip flops off at the entrance to any indoor space. If in any doubt, look for other flip flops at the doorway and leave yours there with them. Resorts are the exception to this, as are most restaurants - but absolutely take them off if entering a Wat (temple) or a Thai’s home.

head & feet In Buddhism, the feet are seen as the lowest part of the body and the head the highest - both literally as well as figuratively. This means that you should never point your feet at a Thai, a monk or a statue of Buddha. Instead, sit with your feet under your knees or cross-legged. The head is seen as the most “holy” part of the body and as such, should not be touched. This means no playful ruffling of that cheeky boy’s hair or patting of kids heads. I know, to us it’s a gesture of affection. To Buddhist Thais, it’s very offensive.

royalty The Thai Royal Family is revered and there can be no worse “faux pas” than joke about the King. Some have actually been thrown in jail for making “uncivil remarks” about their beloved leader. It’s serious business and you should take note. You’ll see his image absolutely everywhere, which should give you a good idea of the respect and love he has from the Thai population. Just use common sense and you’ll be fine. If in doubt about what you should do in any given situation - just do what the Thais around you are doing and you can’t go wrong.

the

haggling Thailand is an excellent place to pick up some bargains, and haggling is expected amongst customers and vendors. Remember to take the “softly-softly” approach and don’t be aggressive. Smile and ask what their best price is and take it from there. Keep your voice calm and quiet and never, ever lose your temper.

buddha Sacred and revered. Even if it’s a ruined, half destroyed statue of the deity - treat it with the utmost respect and you’ll shine in the eyes of the Thais. Common sense again - don’t clamber up onto one and make bunny ears behind it for a photo. If you want to take a picture of a statue, please do so respectfully and, if possible, ask a monk if it’s ok to do so.

WATER SHORTAGES ON THE CARDS FOR KRABI Thailand’s Provincial Waterworks Authority at it’s office here, said this year the province has been more impacted by drought than in other years. Somchai Kulthananat, the local manager, said there has been no rain since mid-December, causing stored water resources from Khao Phanom Bencha National Park to recede, affecting the amount of water in the Krabi Yai canal which supplies the local water supply. Water supply availability will be reduced if there is no rain by the end of this month. Due to the reduced supply, water might also have to be rationed, distributed zone by zone at different times. Mr Somchai asked the public to use water economically and prepare containers to store water in readiness for periods when water distribution is suspended. Provincial Waterworks Authority officers in Krabi are putting up sandbag embankments 50cm high to help save water at the local raw water pumping station to support more than 20,000 households in the provincial seat.

DID THAILAND SPOT MISSING PLANE? Thailand reportedly detected the missing plane from Malaysian Airlines in its radar, but failed to give information about it. The Thailand military said its radar detected a plane that may have been the missing Malaysian Airlines jet just minutes after the jetliner’s communications went down. However, Thailand did not share the information with Malaysia earlier because it wasn’t specifically asked for it, news.com.au reports. The twisting flight path was described by Thai air force spokesman Air Vice Marshal Montol Suchookorn. He added that the plane was taken to the Strait of Malacca, which is where Malaysian radar tracked Flight 370 early March 8. He however said that the Thai military does not know whether it detected the same plane. He said the plane never entered Thai airspace and that Malaysia’s initial request for information in the early days of the search was not specific. Story courtesy of www.bignewsnetwork.com

COAL PLANT FOR KRABI COULD MEAN ECOLOGICAL DISASTER Fossilised shells at a beach dating back 75 million years and over 10,000 rai of the country’s second-largest seagrass area in Krabi would be destroyed if the coal seaport and coal-fired power-plant project go ahead, an environmental watch agency warned yesterday. Adding to the concerns over the project, the local tourism association in Koh Lanta is worried that the project would jeopardise the area’s tourism, with the industry generating between Bt1.4 billion and Bt1.5 billion annually for the local economy. In response to the backlash, a consultancy company hired by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat), which would construct the plant, will on Sunday listen to public concerns about the project in Krabi. “We fear that the public scoping for the Ban Klong Ruo Coal Seaport project will not be different to the one organised earlier for the coal plant,” said Chariya Senpong, a campaigner for Greenpeace Southeast Asia’s Climate Change and Energy division. “Both assessments only identify the impacts that they are able to mitigate, and play down the environmental, societal and economic harm the project will cause. The 700MW power plant would be fuelled by bituminous and

sub-bituminous coal, which would likely be imported from Indonesia, Australia and Africa. Construction of the Bt30-billion facility is scheduled to be completed in 2019. Egat is conducting an environmental and health-impact assessment of the project, which is expected to be completed soon. A Greenpeace report states that the marine life surrounding the proposed project and the sea route to transport coal to the port includes the seagrass area, which covers 17,725 rai, dugongs, nursing grounds for aquatic species, a mangrove forest and over 21 species of wild birds. The mouth of Krabi River is also recognised under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilisation of wetlands. Koh Lanta Tourism Association chairman Therapot Kasirawat said he was worried that hundreds of thousands of tourists, especially from Sweden, would shun the area if the project went ahead. Therapot said about 150,000 Swedish tourists annually visited Koh Lanta, staying on average 19 days, while about 95,000 visited Koh Phi Phi. “We learnt that they [tourists] will go to other places once they see the first coal ship pass the island,” he said. 401/4 Ao Nang, Krabi. End of Na Thai Road. U&P Homemade Bakery has been around for a few years now and has secured itself a place in the hearts and stomachs of many locals and ex-pats in the Ao Nang area. Being one of the very few bakeries in town that bakes a good loaf of bread, U&P also have a great array - and display - of pastries, cakes, flatbreads, rolls, buns and even breadsticks to choose from. They have a fairly extensive menu as well, meaning you can get more than just a decent cup of coffee and croissant in the morning. Lunchtime is sorted with a great selection of western and Thai dishes - the sandwiches being a firm favourite thanks to the freshness of the bread being used aand the decent sized portions served up. Their early morning opening is perfect if you want to get a head start on your day, and the free WiFi makes hanging out here a longer pleasure as you can catch up with work or friends online. Located a little out of town for most of the tourist trade, they are certainly worth a look in if you find yourself in the Na Thai area on the outskirts of Ao Nang. You won’t be disappointed!

scuba snorkelling watersports gear

Another New Wreck Dive for Krabi Waters 18 March marked the new resting place of the AKS 861, a former merchandise ship from Norway that is now lies at the bottom of the Andaman Sea near Maya Bay. Just east of the Viking Cave, this 450-ton ship was ceremoniously sunk after almost 70 years in service. The Royal Thai Navy hosted the event, and guests were chartered in from the surrounding areas to watch aboard the H.T.M.S. Pattani, an off-shore patrol vessel.

The AKS 861 was the last of three ships sunk to create new dive sites in Andaman over the past year. The other two ships were sunk in Koh Yawasam in Krabi. Scuttling old ships for wreck diving sites is a practice that creates artificial reefs for recreational diving. Before a ship is sunk, it’s interior is gutted, the ship is purged of oils, hydraulic fluids and other dangerous chemicals, and most of the superstructure is removed to avoid any potential hazardous caving of the ship as it corrodes. This and the other vessels sunk around the islands of Ao Nang and Phi Phi were done so to create artificial reefs and make the already popular dive sites even more of an attraction to scuba divers. Coral can attach to the wreck and use this as a base to grow, creating a spectacular “artificial reef” over time.

This reef can also become a home to a myriad of marine life that are attracted to the corals and use the wrecks as a nursery for their young as well as a permanent home. This makes for a stunning dive site that can be a huge boost for both the marine environment and the local diving community as a whole.

Krabi is now the one place in Thailand that has the most wrecks in it’s waters, and the fact that they are pretty easy to access in comparison to other wrecks, makes it a bonus. Many shipwrecks lie in very deep waters, making them dive-able by only experienced scuba divers and sometimes specialist wreck divers only. All of the wrecks around Krabi lie in less than 35 meters of water, with many much shallower, meaning that divers need less specialised training to experience them.

krabi tides March 2014

The shallower depths also mean that there is more light, which makes for a more enjoyable dive. This coupled with the balmy warm waters of the Andaman sea make the short dive trips from nearby Krabi, Phuket, Lanta and Ao Nang even more appealing. If you want to experience these new wrecks and see just how they are attracting new marine life, check in with your local dive operator for more info.

Krabi has been an area of Thailand that has been steadily growing for years now, but this past year Krabi has really boomed. With the new international hospital, the international marina as well as the general growth in chartered flights arriving, Krabi has really started to grow. As as has happened in many paces throughout the world, with massive growth usually comes the sacrifice of the local environment. Krabi has long been concerned with the environment already signing in various building restrictions and business regulations, but now the door is open to a new and fast growing style of traveling; ecotourism. The Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai has selected Krabi as its primary focus over the next few years due to its burgeoning infrastructure and ability to actively adapt to the growing environmental needs. Director of the research development group at The Prince of Songkla University Dr.

Parichart Visuthismajarn explains that “tourism can be used as a tool to help local people look after their environment, it can be used to teach the community to work together to preserve the environment while also maintaining the local culture and customs. Dr. Parichart has already commissioned many projects throughout Thailand and has had great success not only in the south but also in the north of Thailand. This past February, Krabi Resort sponsored a three day ecotourism seminar that brought marine ecologists from Taiwan as well as various doctors from throughout Thailand to talk about the growth of Krabi, areas of concern as well as the benefits of the ecotourism. It is a very exciting time for Krabi as the sustainable development ultimatum has just been signed for Krabi, which will regulate developing infrastructure and buildings by keeping the environmental needs in mind as well as addressing the lasting effects of these structures on the environment as well as the people.

Krabi Hospital Interview With the recent opening of the brand new International hospital right here in Krabi, we thought we would take a more in-depth look at it and what a facility like this has to offer those in the Krabi region.

access a private hospital - in Phuket, Nakhon or Trang. The idea of building a private hospital in Krabi happened 3 years ago and is now finally open to serve not only people from Krabi but also people in living in the surrounding provinces and of course international visitors.

We met with K. Suntaree Viprakasit, the Managing Director of Krabi Nakharin International Hospital to ask some questions that many locals and ex-pats wanted to know. KM: Good Morning Khun Suntaree and thank you for taking the time to meet with us. Can I start by asking you what exactly is the Nakharin group? KS: Nakharin is a group that includes 2 hospitals, the 1st one was opened in Nakhon Si Thammarat and the 2nd is now in Krabi. Both hospitals are under the same owner but are managed as 2 separate local companies. It is my job to manage both of these hospitals.

KM: So how many beds are available at the new hospital?

KM: Can I ask why Krabi was chosen as location for the second hospital?

KS: We have 100 beds in 5 different types of rooms, ranging from a dorm with 9 beds up to our VIP room that includes a dining area for family and visitors. We aim to offer a good selection of high-quality rooms to cater for any budget.

KS: Krabi is an interesting and growing province that is attracting more and more expats and tourists every year. It had no private hospital though, which meant that many people

KM: One of the most important questions we want to ask you involves the proficiency of your doctors. Does a new hospital mean new doctors fresh out of medical school? KS: Ha ha! Yes I see your concern but I can assure you that all of our full time doctors have been carefully selected on their experience and expertise. We have at present 12 full time doctors with us as well as 15 working part time. Most of the doctors at the hospital have attained PhD level and come from places like from Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Rama. The most important thing for us at Nakharin International Hospital is to provide excellent care so we take the hiring process very seriously. More doctors will be hired when the need arises and new specialties will be offered when the appropriate doctors are found. KM: Good to know! Do we need to make an appointment?

(expats and thai) had to travel for a long period of time to

42

KS: It is always best to book an appointment to avoid losing too much time in a waiting room. The hospital opening hours are from 8am to 5pm, please call 075 626-555 to find out about the doctor’s schedule.

KM: Finally, can I ask if you have had many “guests” staying with you since you opened? KS: Actually we have, yes! After only 25 days, 1100 patients have already visited our hospital and we have had more than 200 in-patients. Our high technology CT scan and MRI will be ready to go on the 23rd March and we already have patients on our waiting list. KM: Thank you very much for your time, I can say we are all very happy to know we finally have a private hospital close to our home, well done for your efforts and results so far. Is there anything you would like to add to this conversation? KM: That’s a number everyone should have! So private healthcare can be expensive. How to you work with regards to health insurances? KS: We have already made steps to put in place a system that allows reimbursement by both Thai and international insurances and benefit from the cashless claim system. A lot more will be done in the near future. If you want to know more about your particular insurance provider, please contact the hospital directly. KM: One of the questions we have been asked to ask you is whether the hospital will offer health check-ups? KS: Yes, we offer 3 main health checks that go into different level of details. If you obtain a Privilege membership card (Executive or Premium) you can benefit from different options of complimentary health check-up programs. Contact us for more information or visit our website. KM: You have an Accident and Emergency Department, so do you also have new ambulances? KS: Yes we provide an ambulance service. We currently have

KS: Thank you for the trust you put in us. We have opened very recently so my only comment is that all cannot be achieved at once. Please understand that we need time to reach the best standards and we are working on it one step at the time. Work in progress, as we say! Top Dog Hot Dog success reigns once again as Café Europa held it’s 12th Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest in Krabi Town. Bottomless draught beer, loud t-shirts, good cheer and of course, all you can eat hot dogs in 12 minutes put the cap on another successful event. It’s hard to say if the next day rated so highly, but nonetheless it was a good time for all. Situated in the heart of Krabi Town, Café Europa has been serving up Scandinavian culinary delights to the masses. Homemade pate, Smørrebrød (Danish open-faced sandwiches), imported Scandinavian cheeses, genuine Akvavit, and even gluten-free bread have made a mark on local hearts and stomachs for nearly 24 years. The neighborhood eatery has been popular with Thais, expatriates and tourists alike, but its ubiquity extends beyond their imports. Owners Henrik, Finn, and Tip opened their doors in 1990 - long before the tourism boom invaded Krabi - with the simple mission of bringing a few comforts from home served up with a family feel. Today, they are a household name. Tenderhearted charm permeates the air in this mom-and-pop style café, and despite their occasional VIP guest list – the governor of Krabi is a regular and Leonardo Di Caprio ate here often enough to have his own chair commissioned - the establishment has remained tethered to its down-to-earth roots.

after last year’s contest. No trophy and title is sparkly enough for the indigestion, we suppose. In twelve short but grueling dog-stuffing minutes, people gobbled down hot dogs with beer, with some opting for the quicker technique of dipping the bread into the beer to speed things along. It’s all going to the same place anyway. Others casually dressed their dogs in onions and mustard in between chuckles, not taking the event as seriously as a heart attack (figuratively and literally). Hailing from Sweden and living in Had Yao, Krister Andersson took the win with eight and half hot dogs. Suffice to say, many of the contestants reached their annual limit of hot dogs in one night, but certainly not their limit of beer…a whole 50 liters of it, probably because the hot dogs make people extra thirsty. It was another outstanding year for the festivities, and we’re looking forward to the next contest in 2015. Rumor has it KM’s editor has already signed up, spandex on, ready to win it. Yeah, even we didn’t know he owned spandex.

A cheeky idea from a small group of dive instructors, the contest began as a way to indulge in the nostalgic red hot dogs from the motherland with a competitive twist. 12 years later the contest is a tradition of pure fun, held according to the official rules of Hot Dog eating contests, of course (yes, official rules). “It’s just fun for the people,” Henrik explains. “It’s fun to give back to the regulars. A lot of people look forward to this event. More so they come for the beers, though.” But what’s with the flaming red color of the hot dogs? Well, its peculiar, we know, but it’s actually intentional and the process is steeped heavily in tradition. In Denmark during the days of yonder, sausages were sold in their usual brown color. The leftover sausages were then dyed red, so that customers could distinguish between the fresh and day-old sausages the following day. Somehow, people just began preferring a splash of color in their lives and the red dogs climbed over the brown dog coat tails to the top. The hot dogs used for the contest were actually made in Bangkok by actual Danes and are regularly shipped to the restaurant. This year was one of record breaking in attendance – 31 to be exact – as well as 180 dogs prepared for the contestants. Unfortunately, last year’s champ Rune Granland of Norway, was unable to defend his title of nine and half dogs. We surmise that he paid big for it the next day

Peace, Love & Photography Professional photographer and actress couple give up their successful businesses to embark on an around-the-world adventure to make the world a better place. Through their acts of kindness, they hope to inspire a generation and change the world. For years, Filip Cederholm had ran a successful photography studio in Stockholm, but as the years rolled by and the shoots kept coming he began asking himself what it was all for. “Why is it that I have so much and others around the world have so little? Can’t something be done to help?” Thinking about the change he wanted to see and realizing his specific abilities with photography and experience shooting in challenging areas, the concept to use his skills with the camera to help others was a natural transgression. In 2011 Filip founded Peace Love and Photography and slowly began the downsizing of his studio in Stockholm. Soon after the project was conceived, the beginning of the ABC Charity project began. The goal of ABC charity was to travel the globe taking photos of 500+ students at a time who would arrange themselves in the shape of a letter of the modern English alphabet. After the arrangement was finalized, a photo is then taken and made available on the charity’s website for purchase, with 100% of the proceeds generated going towards various charities in each of the countries visited. “The goal is to show people that all a person needs in order to change the world is an idea and the willpower to see it through. It is our dream to help to inspire people to change the world as they see fit,” Filip tells us.

Soon after the inception of Peace Love and Photography, Filip was working on a photo-shoot in Toronto where he met the talented actress Ashley Copper. Ashley was a successful actress featured all across Canada and with a bright future on the big screen, but even in the limelight she also had reservations about her path and its effect on the world. They soon realized their passions were intertwined and they could work together to achieve the international change they both sought. After deciding to work together on this project, they immediately began planning for the first letter “A”, with South Africa being the chosen host of the first letter. Soon after, articles were published in Swedish newspapers and magazines which garnered their initial following.

The goal is to show people that all a person needs in order to change the world is an idea and the willpower to see it through.

Social media accounts have been extremely helpful in spreading the word internationally and gaining support. “In the beginning it was only the two of us, writing the stories, contacting media for interviews, arranging all of the logistics - with only Filip and I working for the project, it was extremely tiring but we kept it going and now we are gaining support from the many communities we are working with”, Filip explains. It was a tough start, but the hard work is paying off as the couple have now completed the letter “G” in Thailand. As their success and popularity grow, charities and organizations from around the world have begun contacting them to be a part of future letters.

to the ABC Charity website and made available to the public for purchase in a variety of sizes.

“It is extremely exciting that it is now taking hold and our message, ‘Together, we can make a difference’ is proving even more true with the support we’re receiving,” Filip tells.

An amazing aspect of this project is the personal connection it will offer to donors, those who wish to purchase photographs will have the ability to choose which charity their purchase goes to support.

It was a tough start, but the hard work is paying off as the couple have now completed the letter “G” in Thailand.

Ashley and Philip traveled to Krabi this past February in order to shoot the “G” in their alphabet. Their shoot in Krabi was met with a great amount of support from the entire Krabi community. The Mayor, Mr. Keratisak Phukaoluan, arranged the donation and logistics of a crane in order to hoist the couple into the air so they could get the photo as well as the police and security on duty for safety reasons. A local school agreed to have their students participate by turning the day into a “field trip” and a local tour operator helped with the transportation of all the students involved. Their message was loud and clear - in Krabi, together we truly can make a difference. Krabi Magazine asked them a few questions on why they choose Krabi. “I came to Krabi a few years ago on holiday among many other places around Thailand and this place always stuck in my head as one of the most special and unique places in Thailand, not only the physical landscape but the people, food and general energy of this place is unlike any other place I’ve been to in Thailand.” The size and scale of the project is unheard of; never before has an undertaking of this magnitude been achieved in the name of art and charity.

“We want there to be an immediate connection between the charities and the people purchasing the photos,” Ashley explains. “When people choose to purchase a photo from our website they can then choose from a list of charities where they want the money from their purchase to go.” The current project is scheduled for completion in 2016, but afterwards the couple plans to do another alphabet and continue their work all around the globe. For any questions or information you would like to ask Ashley and Filip, send an email to: hello@peaceloveandphotography.com They can also be followed on Twitter and Facebook accounts by searching for “peace love and photography” on either platforms.

Sushi Restaurant & Grill Opening time

11.30 hrs. – 23.00 hrs.

26 different locations across the globe are being reviewed for viability and arrangements are currently underway. Some of the proposed locations are: Israel Palestine Lebanon Jordan Cambodia Argentina Canada Zimbabwe/Zambia Democratic Republic of Congo “We are talking with many more countries and arranging the details, but the above list will keep us busy for at least 6 months, so this is a good start” Ashley says. ABC Charity aims to raise 10 million USD for a myriad of charities that have helped Ashley and Filip during the course of this project. The plan is to raise funds through sales of the photographs on their website. As letters are completed, the final photos are uploaded

Teeing Off in

Thailand A

fter Spain and the United States, it’s Thailand that takes the third seat in the world’s international golf tourism destination. Thailand has picked up more golf tourism awards than any other country, being named best destination in 2010 by the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators (IAGTO), and receiving the association’s first regional award in 2012 for Pattaya. While the majority of inbound golf tourists come from within Asia, other markets including Great Britain and Western Europe - and on a smaller scale from North America - are growing. More and more, golf tourists are realizing what Thai golfers have long known: all facets on and off the course are focused on providing the best possible experience. For those not in the know, here are a few reasons why Thailand is a hot spot for golf holidays.

Weather The three distinct seasons of Thailand’s tropical culture make it ideal for yearlong tee offs in any of the regions. The cool season from November to February is mild and very sunny with humidity reaching its lowest levels of all three seasons. Temperatures average between 16°– 35° Celsius, with light breezes and clear skies in abundance. This is also the busiest time for travel in Thailand, but it doesn’t surpass the peak golfing conditions. The hottest period commands the March to May weather, with average daily temperatures reaching up to 40° Celsius in some regions. However, the temperature rise is gradual and as any good golfer knows, early morning or evening tee offs are ideal. June to October is known as the green season, when the most rainfall occurs due to the southwest monsoons. Intermittent showers and thunderstorms prevail throughout the day, but as Thailand experiences the driest monsoon period of any Southeast Asian country, there is still plenty of sunshine to and warm weather to be had.

48

Courses Thailand has been the distinguished host of world class Corporate, Pro-am and Charity tournaments, attracting big names such as Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus to name but a few, with some purse prizes surpassing USD$1 million. With that comes the knowledge and expertise of professionally designed courses – both by players and leading architects. There are over 200 courses to choose from at the moment, satisfying the varying levels of any visiting golfer.

Terrain Diversity It’s no secret that Thailand is a coffer of beautiful of sights to behold. Several golfing destinations can be found within the bustling city of Bangkok with some courses hardly alluding to the vibrant and chaotic energy of the metropolis. Cooling, mountainous countryside courses can be found to the north in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, while stunning beachside courses are to be had in the south in Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Samui. If a lively scene is on the menu, great courses can be found in Pattaya. Or if quieter, quainter destinations are the mission, there are plenty of options in the seaside town of Hua Hin, or amidst the breathtaking waterfalls and scenery of Khao Yai. Golfers can even find themselves surrounded by sand dunes in a links-style golf course dotted between rice paddies. Whatever your flavor, Thailand has any golfer covered.

Caddies Thailand is known the world over as the land of smiles, and on the greens is no exception. Caddies are an integral part of the game and provide exceptional value-added service. From the moment players are greeted at the clubhouse to arranging post-game services, Thai caddies are known for catering to every need. Distances to the green, lines of putts and marking balls are just standard procedure in addition to keeping any visitor cool and refreshed. And of course, this is all done with impeccable efficiency and a smile. Thais are known as some of the friendliest people in the world.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) fully supports the tourism industry, catering to every need, with golfing being one of the top priorities. Excellent information and regulation assures high standards for any golfing holiday. With this comes high quality infrastructure, making golfing destinations within Thailand easily accessible and affordable.

Entertainment

Accommodation Staying in Thailand is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and every budget from five-star resort to Thai style bungalow can be met with the wide array of accommodation on offer in all regions.

Food Thailand is famous for its food; rich in flavor and complex on the tongue, yet simple and fresh. Varieties of local dishes are around every corner, but impressive international cuisine is also easy to find for those visitors seeking something closer to home. The options are endless.

Infrastructure

Outside of golfing, there are a plethora of activities to be enjoyed that any visitor would be spoiled for choice. From cultural attractions such as festivals, temples and shrines to local markets and top-rated shopping destinations, there is something to please every taste. Thailand boasts a chasm of splendid beaches and mountains, and hosts an abyss of world-class spas, internationally renowned shopping and dynamic nightlife. The list is endless.

Value With the boundless choices of accommodation, cuisine, entertainment and courses, Thailand offers tremendous value for the money, making it a hot spot for golfing tourists of all levels, interests and price ranges.

Songkran 2557 We’re not done with the New Year’s celebrations, and Songkran – Thai New Year – is the pinnacle of them all. Of course, most people know it as Thailand’s annual group shower, but Songkran didn’t arise from a national hygiene issue. The annual nationwide water fight originated as a way of paying respect to people and wishing them well on the horizon of the new year. During this time, Buddha relics are cleansed with water, and somewhere along the way people began capturing the runoff and gently pouring it onto the shoulders of elders and family as a blessing of good fortune. Of course, this was a slippery slope as tricky youngsters evolved the ritual into full-fledged dousal each other. Not a shabby idea considering April is the hottest month of the year in Thailand. Firecrackers are lit relentlessly, giving the boot the old year and scampering off evil spirits. Hoards of people pile into the back of pick-up trucks armed with buckets of water (with ice! so sneaky!) and water guns, ready to fire away as they creep slowly through town. Others gather along the streets hosing down passersby and filling up guns and the buckets of strangers to keep the festivities going. People dance in the streets and smear each other with colored talcum powder. The entire nation purifies itself with exceptional efficiency…and in other news things are pretty solid for the utility company.

50

But don’t let the water blur your vision. It’s still a festival deeply steeped in spiritual and religious aspects, so it’s also a wonderful experience to step outside to partake in the rites and rituals outside of the raging water battle. Clean your home – and any Buddha relics you might have -as a figurative way of ridding your house of bad spirits. Join your family and pay respects to your elders. Try not to speak ill about anything or anyone during this time and make resolutions for the New Year (for the third time this year, we know, but does it hurt to keep trying?). Perhaps visit a local Wat – temple in Thai – and give food to the monks. In many Wats in the north you can get a glimpse of sand stupas, mounds of earth brought to the temple and decorated in colorful flags and pennants. They are a symbolic gesture of replacing the earth unwittingly taken off the grounds on the shoes of visitors.

In the South, Songkran is typically celebrated for up to three days, and in the north the mayhem plays on for a week. It’s a truly delightful cultural experience and we hope your 2014 Songkran experience is a great one. But before we part, here a few a tips for any of you newbs:

4. Have fun. It’s a crazy time to be in Thailand and perhaps it’s not everyone’s flavor, but put on a smile, let your hair down and just try going with it. It really is a total blast (but whoa whoa, not too blasty, remember Rule #1!). Be safe, and Happy Songkran-ing.

1.Please, don’t just go around blasting any Joe Thailand in the face. The festival is for anybody but not for everybody. Understand? Especially for the elderly and say, someone like your boss – controller of schedules and general ability to feed and clothe oneself- ask politely first if you can offer them a blessing, and keep the sprinkling to a controlled minimum; a little on the shoulder is great. This is not the day to prove that you are your corporate league’s dodgeball champion. And it doesn’t take a physicist to know that travelers on motorbikes feel thrown water harder. Be easy, bro. Also, indoors and innocents on restaurant patios are off limits. Nobody likes a soggy pizza. 2. Probably not the best day to wear white. The rules of apparel decency still apply as well, despite it being a water fight. Keep the banana hammocks and rump floss at the beach (or better yet just in your closet if you can help it). 3. Unless you stay indoors, you’re likely going to get wet. If it’s not waterproof or waterproof-able with some kind of protection, then leave it behind just to be safe.

muang

As Krabi’s beach areas become more and more crowded, it’s a relief to know that one small corner of this province is still the postcard-picture image of paradise. The unspoilt beach at Klong Muang is just a stones throw from Ao Nang and yet, the peace and serenity here is a million miles from the tourist traps and big brash resorts just down the road. Places to stay in the area are located directly on the beach. Luxury rooms and bungalows look out over the waters of the Andaman Sea, giving you the perfect view of a spectacular sunset. As the sun sets over the Andaman, the time has come to relax and sample some of the finest seafood you’ll ever taste. Krabi is known country-wide for the fresh produce from these waters. While welcoming you with open arms, the small local community are also active in preserving the beauty of the area and encourage visitors to do the same. This small piece of paradise will leave a long-lasting memory. Enjoy the beauty of Klong Muang and remember, don’t tell too many people - this is your secret hideaway!

kohlanta lanta old town It was once called Ban Si Raya and was the commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It is a picturesque place with Chinese timer shophouses dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen dock their longtail boats giving the whole scene a very “Thai” look.

the lighthouse Located in Tanod Cape on the southernmost tip of the island, the lighthouse tower of Lanta is the perfect symbol of solitude. It is the place where immaculate nature still survives as it is rarely reached by tourists due to the rugged road conditions.

just arrived It consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of the tourist operations. Ban Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for newcomers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast of the island and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays are all nice to relax and swim.

national park The park covers a marine area dotted with several small sandy islands surrounded by coral reefs. The headquarters are located on the island’s southern extremity.

koh lanta scuba diving & snorkelling There are no fewer than 19 dive operators on Koh Lanta and most of them - if not all - will be qualified to take first-timers out for a fully supervised scuba dive. Dive sites nearby include the world-famous Phi Phi islands as well as the Koh Haa archipelago - all of which are within easy reach. The price you pay will generally include all equipment rental, lunch, fruits and drinking water and as a bonus, the dive sites and boats will be much quieter at this time of the year. A lot of the dive operators speak a variety of European languages, so there’s a good chance you can get an instructor that - quite literally speaks your language. If you’re dead set on staying well and truly within reach of the water’s surface, then snorkelling is the way forward and many of the dive boats also welcome snorkellers on board as well as divers.

thai cooking classes Thai food in the west is generally quite expensive, creamy and “toned down” in comparison to what you find in this country. Here, in contrast, it’s very cheap, plentiful and packs much more of a punch. Learning to cook authentic Thai food in Thailand is about as good as it gets, and many of the kitchens are open-air or even on the beach front - just to add to the experience. Classes are a great way to spend a morning or afternoon if the weather is a little wet for other outdoor activities, and you get to eat everything you make too - so you don’t have to worry about what’s for lunch!

rent a moped & explore Mopeds are everywhere in Thailand, and Lanta is no exception. They’re cheap, easy to operate and are hard wearing. In Saladan you can hire them absolutely everywhere. You might have to leave your passport with the rental agency, but don’t worry - this is standard practice. Everyone does it. It’s an insurance for them that you’ll bring the bike back, is all. Biking around Lanta is the best way to truly explore all it’s nooks and crannies, and you might even come across a few surprises along the way….

activities

have a massage

If the thought of even standing upright is just to much - congratulations: you have successfully integrated into the Lanta way of life. If you have reached this point in your stay here, then it’s time for a massage. If you have never had a Thai massage, you’re in for a treat. Unlike the more traditional notion of a massage, the Thai version does not use soothing strokes as it rubs scented oils into your tired body. Oh no. It uses a “pressure point” method that means lots of hard pressing, twisting and cracking of joints! But it’s not anywhere as bad as it might sound - otherwise no one would do it. It’s invigorating and totally relaxing all at once, and after a hour of this, you feel like you’ve had a great workout and your body will be rid of any niggling aches and pains. You can have it as hard or soft as you like - and your masseuse will usually ask you if the pressure she is using is ok for you, and will adjust accordingly. Probably one of the best things about getting a Thai massage in Thailand is it’s availability to everyone on any budget. You can choose to luxuriate in one of the breathtaking spas that Lanta has on her shores, or you can find a small massage hut somewhere. While the surroundings will not be on par with the spa’s, you can still get a great massage for a couple of hundred Baht, which can’t be argued with.

Its’ sterilization and health centre, which currently cares for over 60 dogs and cats, is open daily to visitors who can tour the facility and meet the animals. Freedom Through Art –

A New Life Through Art Rehabilitation arts and creativity-based workshops, aiming to empower marginalized communities such as those in Bangkwang. In so doing, she’s faced a myriad of challenges, but years of fostering trust and relationships within some of Bangkok’s prison systems has permitted her access otherwise denied to outsiders. This past February, her continued work at Bangkwang was united with another promising cause. For the past four years, Art for All, a Thai non-profit organization whose mission is to offer free art instruction to underprivileged populations was granted permission to offer an art program to a few dozen Thai inmates at Bangkwang. As an exercise in rehabilitation, the art program essentially brought color into an achromatic life, both literally and figuratively. The classes have played an integral part in nurturing creativity and inspiring expression, allowing an opportunity for personal transformation rather than simply vying to exist.

There are a few hundred foreign inmates amongst almost six thousand Thai prisoners at Bangkwang Central Prison, serving long-term sentences, or whom are on death row. The retribution of foreign prisoners is two fold: while they are serving out their convictions, they are unwittingly subjected to a unique type of segregation by default. In a foreign land, amidst a foreign language, under foreign customs and within a foreign justice system, these persons bear the cumbersome weight of unfamiliarity, breeding a deepened sense of isolation, hopelessness, and devaluation. For foreign inmates, Bangkwang can be a place where the human will and spirit faces its biggest challenge: to remain intact. Inmates commonly succumb to depression, psychological disorders, suicide, and sometimes –ironicallyto addictions to the very vices that landed them there. With the exception of family and loved ones, this population is easily forgotten from the outside. But for Heather Luna-Rose, Executive Director and founder of Luna-Rose Prisoner Support (LRPS), that world remains connected to this one. The Canadian non-profit has worked tirelessly for the past nine years providing support visitations, counseling, financial assistance, tangible support (such as food and other necessities that prisoners must fund themselves), lobbying, and advocacy. Her mandate was born of the understanding in the flaws of retribution: absolute punishment is dehumanizing, devaluing, and ultimately detrimental to society as a whole. An avid social justice activist equipped with vast experience and credentials in critical pedagogy, violence prevention and humanitarian action, Heather has also worked extensively with facilitated

Aside from personal works, this year the inmates are creating a mural project on the inside wall of Bangkwang, providing a positive return on the art program as it continues to shed light on the benefit of creativity-based programs. The program provides a means of quelling the deteriorating effects of imprisonment by re-establishing self-worth, which has a direct effect on mental and emotional states, and subsequently the status of the prison population. Many inmates cite the lack of mental stimulation as one of the greatest challenges in incarceration. As of 2012, visitors were prohibited from bringing in items such as clothing, food, toiletries, medicines, and most notably, books, magazines, and similar materials. Computers and cell phones are prohibited. Consequently, there are limited avenues of mental reprieve and emotional release. Each day can undertake a monotonous rhythm as incarceration leaves little room for inflection even in the most mundane of daily rituals (of which there are very few). As such, life inside becomes a battle against being broken, and it’s a battle that many lose. Since the art program’s inception, only one foreign inmate has been permitted to participate. Felix Cheremnykh is an Ukranian whom came to Bangkwang on a death sentence. Felix was not an artist in his life before incarceration. At his trial,

supports the possibilities of art and creative expression as rehabilitation, to allow the prisoners to start contributing to their fellow inmates, and moreover back to society,” Heather reiterates. “I see this as an opening for the prisons to not just be seen as places of punishment, but as a movement towards a new model.” While pieces created in the Art for All program are solely owned by Bangkwang and not available for exhibition or sale, Heather independently curates prisoner art exhibits and sells works by several inmates she supports, and has done so for three years in Canada. Because of her experience, she was invited to consult with the Art for All class this past February, and lectured on other prisoner artwork from around the world.

he did not speak, read or write any Thai and was not afforded a translator. In his cell, he created a defense document of stick figure drawings, taking responsibility for his crime in the form of picture versions of the events. He was sentenced to the death penalty, but has since received a reduction to 40 years due to his ‘Excellent Class’ status, and several King’s amnesties over the dozen years he’s been incarcerated.

Heather’s cause is independent of the Art for All program, but their parallel natures will hopefully cultivate future collaborations, and the possibility of expanding creativitybased programs. In the interim, in addition to supporting art she continues to provide emotional, spiritual and psychological support to imprisoned foreign nationals.

To fill his time, Felix began sketching evocative scenes of prison life on any materials he could acquire or donated supplies from LRPS. Crude drawings eventually gave way to impressive sketches that did not go unnoticed. After considerable appealing, and likely due to Felix’s ‘Excellent Class’ status, Felix was allowed to join. His self-taught talent earned him the chance to formally present his work to the Prime Minster Yingluck Shinawatra during her visit last year. Heather has been a familiar face from the outside for Felix (his family is financially unable to visit him), and she has exhibited and sold his artwork in Canada, putting 100% of the proceeds back into his prison account. One year the sales of his artwork totaled USD$2900, allowing Felix to not only support himself inside prison (inmates must purchase their own food, clothing, toiletries, etc.) but also send money home to his family through Heather. The estimated cost of sustaining bare necessities for a foreigner in a Thai prison is roughly USD$100 per month, and it is money they cannot earn inside the prison but must rely on outside help for. While incapacitation, deterrence, and retribution are common justifications for imprisonment, the theory of modern prison systems as places of art rehabilitation are still somewhat novel in Thai men’s prisons. “It’s exciting that Bangkwang prison

Heather’s work remains largely thankless in its grand scheme, with the biggest obstacle being funding. LPRS is without government funding and subsists solely on Heather’s personal funds. She spends half of the year in Vancouver, Canada, exhibiting art and fundraising for the costs of returning to Thailand to continue her mission for the latter half of the year. While in Bangkok, countless hours are spent either bringing support to inmates in Klong Prem Central, Bangkwang Central, and Bangkok Remand, or completing the innumerable tasks

all you need is rest Information regarding inmates and their conditions is strictly controlled, and the marred history of Bangkok’s prison systems has often spurred a defensive stance against publicity. Likewise, sensationalism does little to further the mandate of LPRS. In gaining access to the inmates, Heather has had to tread delicately in her humanitarian mission, for fear of backlashes to the progress she’s made in developing positive relationships with the prison officials. The hope is that focusing and sharing the positive changes happening through art and through inmate support may perhaps be the start of something bigger.

Heather’s collaboration with the Art for All program in Bangkwang is in its infancy, but she’s optimistic in the furthering of the relationship, possibly expanding its reach to other inmates, or the introduction of additional programs. Supporting arts is a confident beginning, but it remains a fleck within the larger framework of advocating growth, restoring dignity and hope, providing compassion, and inciting positive transformations of the inmates. Healthy Holidays by Sarah O’Farrell

S

ometimes holidays are a ways and means of putting exercise ‘on hold’ for a week or two. Indulging in buffet breakfasts, sleep ins, pool relaxation and happy hours are routines we don’t get to enjoy in our 9-5 lifestyle. But for some of us, working out is almost as habitual as brushing our teeth. I’ve been on the South East Asia road for the last three months and given the time frame, have been travelling on what I believe to be a ‘flash packer’ budget. Our average nightly spend has been USD40 over 20 different hotels/ guesthouses. Although I fall into the category of exercise withdrawals, including a fitness facility within my accommodation budget has not always been an option. Only two out of the 20 have included a gym. So, I’ve had to improvise a little to ensure I still get my heart rate up, I’ve carried a skipping rope and theraband

with me on the road which have been life savers. There’s also plenty of body weight exercises that can be done such as squats, push ups and lunges so I’ve managed quite well. As I was recently in Ao Nang, Krabi here’s some tips on what you can do while in the area, for free! Take a walk or run along the beach! You won’t be the only one out there absorbing the glorious vitamin D. The vibe on

If you want to truly earn your dessert then take a walk up the hill to these restaurants (note: NOT when you’re heading up there to eat - I don’t recommend doing this in high heels!) The Hilltop is higher up so keep breathing and you’ll get there. You’ll soon forget that your gasping for air when you witness the beautiful view at the top. Ao Nang offers a number of fitness facilities that are a pay as you use set up. Some hotels will also let you use their gyms at a cost as well. In the area you can also find yoga studios and Muay Thai gyms for some authentic training styles. For the more adventurous rock climbing is also a possibility. Enjoy your time in Ao Nang! the beach is great in the morning with plenty of locals and tourists working up a sweat or having an early dip in the ocean. The sand on Ao nang beach is excellent for running or walking. Nice and flat and relatively stable. I often reward myself with a nice cold fruit shake after my work out, remembering to ask the ladies to hold the condensed milk and sugar! Koh Jum

Koh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint on this tranquil island. Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi from the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged in, has it lost its reputable unplugged character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to unplug; the island’s nature and culture still dominates the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family run character ranging from the back packers paradise Bo Deng run by two laughing souls, Dila and Rosa, all the way up to the stunningly beautiful Koh Jum Beach Villas, an eco villa resort with exquisite villas tucked in an incredible botanical garden. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the

island at over 400 meters. A great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harbouring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese Pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island amongst the mangroves. Resorts are located facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villages to remain authentic without any significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats located on the mainland port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi – Koh Lanta Ferry that stops at two locations on Koh Jum out at sea where long tail boats come out to meet passengers to take them ashore. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and also prevent large masses of tourists from ever overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year.

The Motorbike Diary

W

e headed to the Chao Praya River pier with only an overnight bag and ambitions for something new, something more than the usual escape from high season. First sight was Koh Klang, just across the river yet worlds away from the raucous hustle; quaint villages quietly existing in the traditions of fishing and farming, and not much else. Waiting patiently under the trees for enough people to fill the longtail boat, we were finally waved over to ride our motorbike down the walkway, and onto a skinny, rickety wooden ramp where we parked our bike on the boat. The boat was the same size as the droves of longtails that sweep the Ao Nang seashore, but with only a platform for cargo, anything with wheels, and a firm stance for the few bodies crossing over. We hadn’t yet entered that realm filled with curious looks as to what the foreigners were doing, travelling with the locals, sans ferries, crowded speedboats and the confines of advanced bookings. We rode through the island past fields of rice and tarps of drying fish to the end, looking for a boat that would puddlejump us to the next land mass. A woman sitting in the refuge of her sala approached us with an inquisitive smile; our faces shrouded in that unmistakeable look of hope that we found the right place. When our plans were revealed, she graciously pointed us towards the unassuming pickup point on the beach, sanctioning our quest to commute as she does. Riding

our motorbike onto the sand, we came to the shy white flag upon its pole, waiting to be raised as a signal to any boats on the other side that people were ready to cross. For half an hour we sat in a shaded hammock made of an old fishing net, unconcerned with however much time it would take to be picked up. At this moment, still in the dawn of our adventure, we had all the time that time could create, and there we sat in the cradle of an umbriferous tree, imbibing that satiating breeze. We could go anywhere.

Riding our motorbike onto the sand, we came to the shy white flag upon its pole, waiting to be raised as a signal to any boats on the other side that people were ready to cross.

As a boat driver approached, he made no attempts to hide his look of surprise. Smiles drew across all of our faces - ours acknowledging our excitement, and his of his bewildered amusement. And so it went like this as in a game of hopscotch, from island to mainland back to island again. Passing through villages too small for a presence on maps, we found ourselves launching out of Laem Kruat Pier towards Koh Sriboya, a place that hardly graces the lips of travellers surging past it on their way towards Koh Jum. Our minds were reeling at the thought that perhaps this island was a stone left unturned. Two local girls accompanied us on the boat and began to ask questions, possibly because Koh Sriboya saw little to no traffic from outsiders, save for the one small resort on the island mostly inhabited by a few expats throughout various times of the year. Speeding up the sandy bank and onto the dirt roads that had seen better days, we rode through an island that still paused at the sight of us. As we whirred by a group of villagers milling about, a little girl screamed out “Farang!” with an undeniable tone of shock and awe, followed by roars of laughter from the rest of the group and ourselves. The intruders had been identified. We knew then that we need not venture any further.

against our skin as if to beg us never to leave. Close the eyes and the mind can’t remember the troubles of yesterday; we’re here now, drifting in a sea of bliss. Before our eyes were so many reasons to be grateful for this life. The treasured bottle of wine we had carried was well worth the haul, every taste bud in overload underneath the painted sunset of fiery reds, amber oranges, soft purples and placid blues. And the villagers seemed untouched by the burdens of catering to a transient community, a weight that seems to tax the warmth of other well sought out destinations. This is a place where visitors and locals invite each other to connect over a meal in their homes, the simplest form of hospitality in the world, and the fastest way into hearts and minds. This is the stuff of real travel diaries that posits itself deep into the marrow.

What we had carried was well worth the haul, every taste bud in overload underneath the painted sunset of fiery reds, amber oranges, soft purples and placid blues. We found the islands only lodging almost completely unoccupied, spoiling us for choice. Past a forest of hammocks, under the refuge of banyan and palm trees with uninterrupted views of the ocean, we had discovered utopia. A roomy teakwood bungalow with windows as wide as the walls on all sides, a shower under the sky, and a verandah pleading for us to stay; a proper paradise found. The ceaseless breeze brushed

When the sound of waves lapping an empty beach can be heard from your bed through the night, nothing else in the world would appear to sooth the soul. If only we could’ve lingered longer in this postcard. But the romance of a motorbike adventure will live on in our memory, and in a conversation over dinner somewhere far away in the future.

PHI PHI Paradise

Thailand is seeing a rapid tourism boom with no signs of slowing down. With that comes an influx of visitors to one of the most beautiful and accessible island groups in the world, Koh Phi Phi. Despite what you’ve heard, there is still plenty to do and see in the archipelago that fits every style; from partygoing backpacker, to the relaxation-seeking travelers. While the concentration of shopping and restaurants reside on the isthmus of Koh Phi Phi Don, peace and indulgence can be found on secluded parts of Long Beach, Laem Thong, and other areas of the main island that are only accessible by private longtail boat. Even in the midst of the crowd, nothing outshines the translucent waters, pearl white sandy beaches, and panoramic views of the stunning limestone karsts. It is indeed, one of the most beautiful places in Thailand. Koh Phi Phi Don was nearly wiped out in the devastating tsunami of December 2004, but the redevelopment was swift, and new building regulations limit the height of infrastructure so as to not obstruct the stunning island views. Only two seasons exist on the archipelago: the hot season from January to April, and the rainy season from May to December. The latter season doesn’t completely halt island activities, so travelers need not worry about low season shutdowns of businesses and activities as in other parts of Thailand. While most of Thailand is of the Buddhist belief, Koh Phi Phi has its own eclectic mix of Thai-Chinese, Muslims and even traditional sea gypsies. The majority of the population is Muslim, but the entire community lives harmoniously. This melting pot of cultures and faith means there are abundant celebrations year round. Visitors can take part in traditional festivities such as the annual boat-launching ceremonies of the sea gypsies, or numerous longtail boat races. The island also heavily celebrates westernized holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day, making it a perfect location for holiday getaways for people from all walks of life.

Koh Phi Phi Don remains an exotic escape, and can be customized to any travel style. Not to be forgotten is the plethora of activities available for the active visitors, or those with families, some of which are unique to the region. It is a hub of romance, excitement, liberation, and tranquility. Wherever you are on Koh Phi Phi, you will find what you are looking for.

Stunning Koh Phi Phi There is a never-ending array of things to do on the Koh Phi Phi islands besides roll around in the same sand that DiCaprio’s hot bod once did without looking creepy.

Turn it up and join a Deep Water Soloing boat trip, whereby adrenaline junkies can swim to far-reaching climbing routes and plunge right back into the sea. This is sure to please any thrill seeker.

Koh Phi Phi Don – the largest island - is the eating, sleeping, lodging center of the archipelago and although well developed, always as stunning as ever. Koh Phi Phi Leh is always teeming with visitors to Maya Bay thanks to that whatchamacallit movie , but there are two other islands to the north, worth the short boat ride. Ko Mai Phai is an islet that glistens with several tantalizing beaches, and Ko Yung has a beautiful stone beach on the east, a few small sandy beaches at the foot of the hills, and loads of vibrant coral reefs. A breathtaking view of Phi Phi Don and its isthmus rewards the steep walk and small admission fee of the Viewpoint. Of course, it is especially magically at sunrise or sunset, but don’t forget your torch. Surpass the daytime crowds and opt for a Maya Bay Overnight Sleep Aboard. See the infamous beach during sunset, swim with plankton blanketed under the stars (rumored to be one of the best spots to do so in the Andaman), and sleep in the wondrous bay blanketed by the cool night air. Some of the most spectacular Diving sites in Thailand are found locally in Phi Phi. A myriad of macro and micro marine life, caves and swim-through’s, and even a wreck site await beginners to advanced divers. There’s no shortage of renowned dive operators available to suit all levels and desired itineraries, including day trips and multi-day liveaboard trips. Forget the crowds on Railay and try your hand at rock climbing the limestone karsts of Phi Phi. Inch your way into tight-rope walking by venturing into a Slacklining, which can done on land or over water. Visit one of several climbing shops for more information.

With beaches on all sides suitable to any wind directions, Phi Phi Don is an ideal place for Kiteboarding. Whether experienced or a newbie, wind seekers can head to the nearest kiteboarding shop for rental equipment, certified IKO courses, or arrange customized tours. Learn how Pineapple Paper or Batik is made. Even tap into your inner artist and create your own unique Thailand souvenir by painting your own Batik textile. Go Caving. The humidity, the sea, and the porous nature of the limestone rock have collided over the centuries, forming a vast system of caves. There are many caves in the Phi Phi archipelago that can be explored, with some containing prehistortic paintings or bird’s nest swiftlets that can be partially visited. Enjoy a cocktail on the beach and watch a Fireshow. Talented fire artists toss, flip and twirl great balls of fire, even eschewing gasoline from their mouths to create the ultimate human dragon. Phi Phi is known for some very famous fireshows, and even championship matches that are sure to dazzle.

PHI PHI Activities Fancy a climb? Those towering limestone cliffs offer you a glimpse of what mother earth is capable of. Why get up close and personal with those beauties and go for a climb? There are many tour companies on the island that can assist you in your height seeking activities. Try deep water soloing where you climb upwards of 10 meters then jump backwards into the pearly ocean below! Pure bliss! Fancy a beach? Well you’re on an island!!!! One of the best and most accessible beaches on Phi Phi Don is Long Beach, just a 10 minute long tail ride from Tonsai beach (100 THB) or a 45 minute stroll through the jungle and you’ll step down onto the picturesque white sand beaches that make this island world renowned. Just grab a cocktail and let the day float on by. Doing nothing never felt so good. Fancy a trip to Maya Bay? Remember way back in 2000 that movie with young Mr. DiCaprio, well you’re there! Prior to this movie’s filming and international notoriety Koh PhiPhi was

Activities to do on Phi Phi: Phi Phi is home to some of the world most fun and thrilling things to do on earth. From the limestone cliffs to the translucent waters of the Andaman bay there are no shortages of things to do to keep you and your loved ones busy during your time on Koh Phi Phi. Fancy a dive? Well the waters surrounding Phi Phi are home to some of the most vibrant sea creatures around, from the small yet brilliantly colored nudibranches to the graceful leopard sharks and hawksbill turtles, there is always something to see. Don’t think you have to be a seasoned professional scuba diver to get a glimpse of the wonders of the sea, much of what is worth seeing can be seen comfortably from the surface with nothing more hen a mask and a snorkel.

a much less visited place but still with the wave of visitors from all over the globe Maya Bay remains one of the most beautiful and pristine places on the island. Fancy a little exercise and a nice view? Look no further then the viewpoint on middle of Koh PhiPhi Don. You cannot miss it, just walk away from the main section heading north and you’ll start to see some signs around, don’t worry if you don’t see anything you can always ask someone. The hike takes about 40 minutes from start to viewpoint two (which is where it’s all at!). Don’t forget your camera! Fancy a fire show? Skinky bar is where you need to find your way to my friend, with some of the most intricate and mind blowing dances with that attractive flame, this is the place to see what everyone’s talking about. They even do a flaming jumprope that’s open to all that dare…. Fancy a tattoo? I’m sure you’ve seed a few shops around the island and I’m sure you’re thinking, hummm I would like to get one. Well my friend Koh Phi Phi is home to some of Thailand best tattoo artists around, just remember think before you ink.

Viewpoint

Some would call it an upward stroll while others would classify it as a life-threatening hike. Regardless of fitness level, we can all agree on one thing: the Viewpoint is a never ending Christmas of one of the most beautiful views in Thailand. Reaching the viewpoint is fairly easy. From the main village on Koh Phi Phi Don, visitors can follow signs from the road heading east towards Ao Lo Dalam. There are also signs for ‘Tsunami Evacuation Route,’ which is the same path. The 300-meter ascension includes steep steps along a narrow, twisting path. The path is paved and well marked, allowing even the tiniest of visitors a chance to climb to an incredibly rewarding view. There are actually three viewpoints (creatively named Viewpoints 1, 2

and 3) along the path, with Viewpoint 1 being the climax. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with an overlook of the sandy straight connecting the two large bodies of Koh Phi Phi Don. The birds-eye perspective is 360 degrees of jutting limestone karsts, which are just as majestic as when visitors arrive by boat under their towering presence. The view is vibrant midday, albeit hot, but it’s well worth a trek up at sunrise or sunset. Once at the top, visitors can continue on down one of four trails that lead to the remote, uninhabited east coast beaches of the island: Ao Tohko, Paknam (Relax Beach), Rantee and Lo Bakao. The first three take approximately thirty minutes to reach, and about one hour to reach Lo Bakao, where hikers can continue onwards along the road to Laem Thong.

Long Beach

Far enough away from the crowd yet close enough to the hustle of Tonsai Village, Long Beach lies facing southwest towards stunning views of Koh Phi Phi Leh. The tranquil stretch of beach boasts translucent, azure waters with some of the best direct beach to water snorkeling found on the island. You don’t have to venture far to see vibrant coral and marine life bustling about in their natural underwater habitat, and renting snorkeling equipment is quite easy and reasonable. Just 200 meters out from the beach is a small rock barely breaking above the surface – Shark Point – where black tip reef sharks can be viewed. Not to worry, these sharks are vegetarian! Since this is a popular stop amongst tour boats during the day, the sharks are much better spotted either mid morning or early evening. From November to April the water is glassy and calm, but May to October sees rougher seas, so swimming is a bit more difficult at low tide due to the rocks and coral. The latter season also tends to have a stronger current, so swim with caution. The majority of visitors come to Long Beach to stay, but it is also an

easy day trip. A quick five-minute longtail boat ride from the pier will deposit you on the finest and softest white sand on an island chock full of fine, soft white sand. If you prefer, you can take the more scenic route by foot, either by clamoring over the rocks between beaches, or hiking up the trail running through the Viewpoint. There are only a handful of resorts and bungalows on the beach, ranging in price. Each offers deck chairs for sun soaking, with the more upmarket resorts boasting a beachside pool. At present, there are no independent restaurants, but each of the resorts offer fresh seafood and Thai cuisine, as well as standard Western dishes. As the sun goes down and night blankets the sky, visitors can park themselves on one of beachside resort bars to accompany the sunset with a cocktail. Phi Phi Don in general has a laidback attitude, but Long Beach turns it up a notch by turning down the noise. When the sun dips, the beach invites a mellow vibe from visitors in search of tranquility; a few drinks and cards or backgammon with friends is typically the way travelers close the chapter on yet another spectacular day. And for that random wild hair, you can always head back to Tonsai.

Landscaping Your Garden

Consumer demand remains strong for attractively designed residential landscapes that are perfect for entertaining and relaxing, according to the 2014 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends Survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects. The survey also shows continuing popularity for both sustainable and low-maintenance design. Landscape architects who specialize in residential design across the country were asked to rate the expected popularity of a variety of residential outdoor design elements in 2014. The category of gardens and landscaped spaces received a 94.2 percent rating as somewhat or very popular. Outdoor living spaces, defined as kitchens and entertainment spaces, were second most popular at 92.0 percent. Outdoor recreation came in third at 75.8 percent. Across all categories, 98.3 percent of respondents rated lighting as somewhat or very in-demand for 2014,

77

followed by seating/dining areas (97.7 percent), fire pits/fireplaces (95.4 percent), grills (94.3 percent) and installed seating (89.6 percent), which include benches, seatwalls, ledges, steps, and boulders. “Homeowners know that designed landscapes add value to their lives as well as their property values,” said ASLA Executive Vice President and CEO Nancy

Somerville, Hon. ASLA. “They’re interested in livable, open spaces that are both stylish and earth friendly.” In the realm of landscape garden structures, terraces, patios, and decks are high on people’s lists (97.7 percent), as are fencing (88.5 percent), pergolas (82.8 percent), and decks (82.3 percent). Survey respondents noted that the most popular landscape and garden elements for 2014 include low-maintenance landscapes (95.4 percent), native plants (84.5 percent), and fountains/ornamental water features (83.9 percent). Slightly more than three quarters of respondents (76.4 percent) noted food and vegetable gardens, including orchards and vineyards, will be in demand this year. Decorative water elements—including waterfalls, ornamental pools, and splash pools—were predicted to be in demand for home landscapes (86.1 percent). Spas (76.4 percent) and swimming pools (73.8 percent) are also expected to be popular. The most in-demand eco-friendly design elements include native/adapted drought-tolerant plants (88 percent) and drip/water-efficient irrigation (84.5 percent). Permeable paving (78.9 percent), reduced lawn (72.6 percent), and recycled materials (65.1 percent) are other popular elements that will help

American homeowners reduce their environmental footprint. Additional information on residential landscape architecture can be found at www.asla.org/ residentialinfo.

land There can be a lot of confusion and even the odd legal battle from the mind-bending array of terms for land areas in Thailand. It pays to know exactly what you are talking about if you are considering purchasing or building a property of your own here, so here is a table breaking down the Wahs, Ngans and Rais so you can see at a glance what’s what. As a rule of thumb, the Rai - the most common unit of land in purchasing deals is just under 1/2 acre, or 17,222 sq feet Always make sure that both parties are crystal-clear in the amount of land being discussed, especially before any contract is drawn up and signed...
