e at Krabi Magazine are pleased to usher in the warm, soft, and calm green season 2015. Krabi just got through the 2014-2015 high season and is now looking for a break for a couple of months. Well, as much of a break as you can ask for.

People from all over the world are still coming to Krabi in large numbers, from May-September the demographic changes to represent more Asian travellers, as opposed to the October-April months where the main visitors are from Europe. The green season in Krabi is a wonderful time to be here. Yes we are frequented by strong showers but they are short and refreshing, even necessary at times. Find yourself caught in the intense heat and looking for a refreshing shower that will douse you for an hour or two, Krabi has got your fix. Oh behalf of the staff of Krabi Magazine we would like to thank you for taking the time to read our magazine, we strive every month to bring you relevant and informative stories, while keeping our stories easy to read and fun for everyone. We ask you that if you visit a restaurant, bar or resort that you see within these pages, please mention that you saw them in our magazine! Without them we wouldn’t be able to bring you Krabi Magazine. In light of the Green season, we have added our new “green section” that focuses on things green not only in Krabi but the world, and how we can all help to make our world a little better and safer for future generations. Please check out this month’s story on electric motorbikes and how easy they can be to own or rent and travel around our province without a carbon footprint. Thank you, and enjoy your stay in Krabi, Joe Alonzo | Editor-Krabi Magazine

AO NANG BEACH at 20km from Krabi Town is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches; a long stretch of white sand with limestone karsts as a backdrop. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs are found here. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and on weekends with picnics. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known the world over for their majestic climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15-minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or cliff jumping course (yes, into the sea!), hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. KOH LANTA BEACHES have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai June | 2015

island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. TUBKAEK BEACH Another real place to hide away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you seem from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Chicken) you can catch a glimpse of a chickens neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. You know those postcards with people walking on a sandy isthmus that connects to another island? Yep, here the second island is Koh Tub and is only accessible at low tide. THE KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlight of Krabi province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many a hidden caves and lagoons make it perfect for snorkeling and exploration. Make sure you stop at Lading island after Koh Hong as it is much less visited and sports a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming “The beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the

peace, and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA the developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset viewing spots , heaps of activities, and glimpses into sea gypsy life, is where you will meet nature and tradition. It’s also a National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools that you can swim in. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. HOT SPRINGS Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis that melt away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

BANDA ACEH — An Indonesian regency has passed legislation requiring schools to teach boys and girls separately and hopes to follow that up with a ban prohibiting the two sexes from riding motorcycles together. Aceh, the only province that abides by Islamic sharia law in the Muslimdominated nation, has over the years passed a series of strict faith-based regulations that has put it at odds with the rest of the country. North Aceh last week approved the legislation, which also requires the Koran be read every night, and submitted it to

the provincial government for approval. “What we do now will be just like what happens currently in traditional Islamic boarding schools,” said Fauzan Hamzah, a member of the regency’s legislature. “I hope this policy won’t only be

The Customs Department seized a total of 511 tusks, weighing 3.1 tonnes and worth Bt200 million, from a Laos-bound container at a private company’s bonded warehouse on Saturday. Natural Resources and Environment Minister General Dapong Rattanasuwan told a press conference of the seizure yesterday. The container-load of tusks was sent from Mombasa in Kenya via ship and transported to Laem Chabang Port on Saturday.

A new OTOP (One Tamboon One Product) branch opened in Krabi province last month making the OTOP community even bigger and stronger among local people throughout Thailand.

It was initially declared as containing 11 tonnes of tea, Customs chief Somchai Sujjapongse said. Thai officials’ checking the container discovered the tusks among the tea leaves and seized them for legal action, he said.

OTOP is a community based organization empowering local people with a means to sell their products to a wider audience than would be traditionally available to them in their smaller villages.

Dapong praised this and the department’s previous ivory bust which also seized 4 tonnes of African tusks on April 18. Dapong said Thai authorities had asked for co-operation from neighbouring countries to tackle the ivory trade. Police would now probe the origin of the tusks to try to catch traders and smugglers.

OTOP was founded 14 years ago under the Taksin Shinawatra administration to help support rural regions of the country stand out with their individual province specific products. It was founded after the success of the similar Japanese program One Village One Product (OVOP).

Previous data from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has shown that Thailand - and Laos - are major transit points for African ivory to other countries.

There are numerous OTOP fairs held throughout Krabi Town and Talad Kao throughout the year, each building the OTOP community stronger. The recent opening of this branch office only strengthens community. Now if tourists or locals wish to visit the regional office and see what makes Krabi special, they can come to visit the office anytime they like and buy products specific to Krabi.

MUSIC FESTIVAL

Garbage and wastewater problems are threatening Krabi’s status as a dream destination among Scandinavians. A major tour agency based in Scandinavia has already complained about the problems directly with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

at The Sofitel Resort and Spa Join us on Saturday 20th June, 2015 for an unforgettable weekend at Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort’s when we host the fabulous Krabi Music Festival. The perfect venue for a chic music festival, our luxurious resort with its beautiful tropical garden and the largest free-form swimming pool in Thailand will come alive to the sound of top musicians and DJs.

“Our office in Stockholm has received the complaint about how tourists are afraid of splashing in the sea because of wastewater,” Wiyada Srirangkul, who heads TAT Krabi Office, said on Tuesday.

With our special one or two night packages, you can make it an unforgettable weekend, and explore the many beautiful beaches and islands nearby.

She added that Scandinavian tourists, who have visited Krabi lately, were also unhappy with foul smell from garbage piles around tourist sites.

A highlight of the event will be a mini concert by J Jetrin Wattanasin. There will also be DJs spinning the latest and classic tracks to get you dancing, fun entertainment, and enticing extras.

According to the agency, the problems have existed both in Ao Nang area and on Phi Phi Island. “There are many cancellations of bookings. This has significantly affected Krabi’s tourism,” Wiyada said, “Scandinavians have high purchasing power and they usually make a long stay”. Krabi’s tourism may face even bigger impacts soon. Many other tour agencies have now planned to inspect the province’s tourist sites after hearing about the problems. “They will come around the middle of May. So, we have to solve the problems fast,” Wiyada said. Europeans, particularly Scandinavians, are the main tourist group in Krabi. If they stop coming, the southern province will definitely suffer a big blow. TAT has already raised this issue with Krabi governor, who vows to stop the discharge of wastewater into the sea and improve garbage collection.

TIGER CAVE TEMPLE

1,237-step climb to astounding views, the hike is a mixed bag of emotions: exhaustion, exhilaration, and bewilderment. The hilltop temple is worth the effort for the 360 view of the surrounding countryside laden with swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rains. Although there are no actual tigers at the temple, there is monkey business (hold on to your cameras!). Visit the temple at the bottom, built into a cave, and for a small donation receive a blessing and a special magical bracelet from a resident monk or nun, sure to secure prosperity and health.Â

THA POM CANAL Rent a motorbike and enjoy a highly scenic drive through local villages to Tha Pom Klong Song Nam, where freshwater and seawater from nearby mangrove forests meet. Walk through the nature preserve and admire the beautiful blue water and maze of mangrove, and end it with a cool dip in the natural pool at the end. Rarely visited by tourists, its quiet and uncrowded, save for the few local families cooling off from the sweltering heat.

MARKETS Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets everyday of the week, day or night, food or fun. Krabi Town boasts the largest covered market in southern Thailand. A visit to any of these is a real glimpse into local life and a chance to shop for something unique.

KAYAKING

Whether through mangroves and caves or over clear ocean waters amidst the islands, kayaking is a great adventure into the spectacular surroundings of Krabi. Hit up Ao Thalane bay or navigate into the open sea, the choices are yours and they are endless.

Ajan Ekachai Collector, father and Local Legend. This month one of Krabi’s legends took the time to talk with us about himself, his fascination with the past and how he connects with it through artifacts and relics from times past. Ajan Ekachai was born in Krabi to a rural agrarian family. Money and belongings were not a regularity in his house and would become one of the driving forces in him becoming a collector of all things. His desire was strong for nice things to adorn shelves, walls and general areas of his house. Therefore it was a natural transition for him to focus his energy into collecting artifacts, objects of art and just about anything that looked nice and gave a connection to some part of the past. Ajan Ekachai (Ajan in Thai means teacher) always fascinated with books and reading, in his words the ability to transcend this physical world and descend into one drawn on paper is what gave Ajan Ekachai this drive to read. His fascination with books and his inability to give them up after he would read them lead him to unconsciously building a massive book collection. “Now I have over 5,000 books. Ajan Ekachai explains. After completing school in Nikon si Thammarat, Ajan Ekachai moved to Bangkok to persue a career in education. Soon after arriving he was government appointed to a position in one of the many Bangkok public schools. June | 2015

19

“I am not a collector for money, I collect from the heart” Lucky for Ajan Ekachai Bangkok just so happens to be the nexus of southeast Asia for collectors of all kinds, so being posted to Bangkok Ajan Ekachai took full advantage of his location and allocated 30% of every paycheck towards buying items to fill his collection. Thus slowly his collection began to grow in all directions, currency from all around the world, vinyl records, grandfather clocks, metal tools, books and much much more. “My collection is mainly focused on Thai items but I also have international items, the only criteria for my collection is that the items must have some connection to the past”, Ajan Ekachai says. After working in Bangkok for 20 years Ajan Ekachai’s service to his government was coming to a close, his love for Krabi never lessened and he yearned to return.

20

Upon moving back to Krabi Ajan Ekachai set up a small shop in the center of Talad Kao, only 10 minutes from Krabi Town center. “After collecting for over 20 years I wished to share my collection with everyone, some people can buy, some people can look, some people can learn” Ajan Ekachai states, so opening his shop was a logical decision. “This is my heaven and my paradise, I spend all my time here showing people what I have and talking about the items in my collection”. Ajan continues If you are looking for a step-back in time through artifacts and relics, come down to Ajan Ekachai’s shop located in Talad Kao next to Krabi Town. His phone number is:

GLOBAL CHANGE.

SINCE THE DAWN OF HUMANITY... ...we have been a species of trendsetting. There seems to be an never-ending fascination with what someone else is doing and how we can emulate them. Our clothes, music choices or even our travel destinations can easily be influenced by those we look up to.

We all have this strive to be better everyday, try harder and harder to emulate more those we idolize whether it be consciously or subconsciously.

22

H

enry ford started a trend with his renowned and world changing model T, Steve Jobs was a trendsetter with the seamless and sleek design of his various apple products, Mark Zuckerburg has now started a trend with social media, The Facebook titan has given way to a number of other platforms for communication, such as Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, etc. Our world is shaped by these individuals, a developing world of technology and services is always under a a constant wheel of change. The world is now home to over 7 billion people, only 100 years ago it was estimated at just over 1 billion, this massive increase in global population at such a amazingly fast rate has not come without a certain tax on our planet. A tax that money in the traditional sense will not fix. www.krabi-magazine.com

We currently produce approximately 36 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Of this total amount, about 60% is absorbed by the oceans and landmass of the planet, the remaining 40% the earth cannot absorb therefore it is left in suspension in the atmosphere and causes a slow but steady increase in the CO2 levels there. When it is released into the atmosphere, CO2 acts as a one-way mirror. Sunlight can penetrate through this CO2 and make it to our planets surface, providing us with heat giving energy and life to the planets plants, animals and so on. The danger comes when the sunlight cannot escape out from our planets atmosphere and back out into space. When sunlight bounces back off our planet’s surface, almost half of the Sun’s rays are trapped by the excess CO2 in our atmosphere. June | 2015

The CO2 actually absorbs the Sun’s rays on their trip away from earths surface and then radiates the trapped sunlight out in all directions increasing the overall heat on our planet. This simple production of CO2 is the leading cause for global temperature increase; global temperature growth has a number of other effects on our planet’s climate, increasing sea levels, floods, increased atmospheric moisture and therefore increasing hurricanes, tornados and cyclones. The oceans are also increasing in temperature which causes a dying off of a number of coral species which are very sensitive to temperature fluctuations. These are all directly related to the massive production of CO2, a by-product of the burning of fossil fuels such as oil and coal.

23

WHY NOT CONSIDER A SHIFT IN YOUR MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION?

A

number of the leading governments of our planet have come forward to propose laws and regulations, which act to restricting the amount of fossil fuels companies can produce. There are also a number of countries whose governments give rebates or tax incentives for companies that invest in solar or other green energy production products to offset the companies carbon footprint. This is all a very good thing for the security and longevity of our species, because if nothing is done soon the production of CO2 by humans will cause a global climate shift that will usher in a time and climate where many of us might not be able to survive. There is another way though; government policies are good to supporting the cause but take a long time and will have to go through numerous channels of politics etc. Mahatma Gandhi once said “Be the change that you wish to see in the world” and this is a motto many of us should try to live by in every aspect of our lives. There is a new option for those of you who are looking to make a change in your lives, a change that will help your lives and those of your children. I just recently purchased an electric 3-wheeled electric scooter from KrabiGreenBike, a newly operating business in Krabi province servicing individuals, resorts and groups with fully electric motorbikes, battery

24

assisted bicycles and solar panel systems which can be used on homes, guest houses or even major resorts. It’s is a great option to consider if you are interested in making a change in your lifestyle and a means to support our planet’s future. The new model which was purchased for around 50,000 THB has a range of over 70km for a single charge and a top speed of around 50km/hr. To charge this vehicle it will cost you an approximate 5-7THB in electricity costs so if you are a person like me and travel around 15,000Km/year you will save on average 10,000THB/year. So in this model you will earn back the initial investment of 50,000 in only 5 years. Companies producing electric vehicles are soaring, look at Tesla in California, they are producing over 50,000 vehicles annually the new P85D outperforms a brand new corvette. The car titans, Ford, Toyota, GM and Nissan are beginning to catch on with the new electric trend, producing vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius and the Chevy Spark

If you want to learn more about owning your own electric scooter, get in touch with the professionals at Krabi Green Bike: Or calling them directly at: 091-647-6216 or email them at: Jm.conasiam@gmail.com

He wanted to capture the pure essence of what the traditional flavours are for Southern Thai cuisine and offer these dishes at an affordable price. He wanted to couple this with an ambiance that made patrons feel at home. Now a staple in the Krabi community, Ruen Mai has over the past 25 years, moved three times to and from various locations throughout Krabi Town. Ruen Mai has now found a new home in the suburbs quiet, peaceful and homey is the theme of Ruen Mai in it’s new home on Sai Thai. It is a tranquil haven of comfort. The current restaurant was designed and built by a renowned architect and builder who also happens to be a Krabi local wishing to remain anonymous. His work is one of the key components that gives Ruen Mai it’s delightful local feel. The primary building material used in the construction of Ruen Mai is bamboo sourced from all over Thailand but only specific pieces were used in the construction of the building. The restaurant roof resembles a large straw hat that sits atop a hardwood floor, comfortably spotted with dinner tables. The whole structure is extended over a maze of canals and ponds, which are home to a variety of tilapia, catfish and other local fish. The menu is full of sumptuous dishes, from the burned eggplant in coconut soup (a favorite for vegetarians) to the sautéed shrimp in tamarind sauce (our personal favorite), but don’t feel limited by these dishes, as every dish is delicious and amazing at Ruen Mai. If you’re interested in trying truly authentic Southern Thai cuisine in an ambiance that will soothe your heart, take the short trip out to Sai Thai, on the way to Krabi Town. It’s only about a 10-minute drive from Ao Nang center.

EXOTIC FRUITS OF THAILAND A visit to Thailand isn’t complete without experiencing some of the foods here. The tropical fruits are abundant, delicious and fascinating! While you are here, be adventurous and give some of them a try!

DRAGON FRUIT (GAO MUNG GORN) This is probably the most dramatic-looking of all the Thai fruits, and the outside appearance gives NO indicator of the inside appearance at all! The fruit is a bright pink oblong shape with pointed green leaves springing out from all sides – hence the name, as it DOES look a little dragon-like. Cutting it open down the middle of the fruit will display a white center, filled with tiny black dots. To eat this fruit, scoop out the filling with a spoon. This fruit is moist, sweet, crunchy and delicious! When picking out dragon fruit, “the redder the better” for ripeness!

G U AVA (FARANG)

ROSE APPLE (CHOM-POO)

SAPODILLA (LA-MUT)

Looks like a bumpy/wrinkled green apple. Cutting guava is very pretty. Slice ½ way into it, wedge-like, and then slice all around the guava this way. We pulled out the wedges and ate them this way. This doesn’t taste like the Hawaiian fruit. Hawaiian guava fruits (called strawberry guava) are pink and sweeter. These were somewhat bland, crunchy and starchy – a little pear-like.

This looks like a cross between a thin red pepper and an apple. Cut them into lengthwise slices and eat the thin pieces. These are delicious – sweet and crunchy. They are also called Bell or Mountain Apples

This fruit looks like a large brown plum. The Thai way is to peel it with a sharp knife directed away from you and with the index finger just in front of the blade, guiding it along. You peel the fruit and then cut it through the middle in a zigzag fashion, for display. Lamut has a subtle flavor that isn’t particularly sweet, and yet seems to taste like brown sugar – if that makes any sense - It’s delicate and delicious!

www.krabi-magazine.com

JACKFRUIT (KHANOON)

LONGAN ( L A M - YA I )

MANGOSTEEN (MANG-KUT)

This is a fascinating fruit that comes in a huge spindly ball. Opening it up, you can pull out separate pods, which are around 3” long. These pods have large seeds inside that can be peeled, boiled and eaten with salt. The flesh of the fruit has a pungent taste and smell, somewhat crunchy and a little sour/starchy feel to it. Sometimes they are very sweet, and other times they are pretty bland.

Look like big brown grapes on a branch. They have a thin but hard shell that is easy to break open. The flesh is clear and very sweet with a pit inside. These are delicious but don’t eat too many at one time, as you can get cold sores or even a fever.

Mangosteen is a bizarre looking fruit with a round, deep purple shell. It has flavorful white flesh that is eaten in sections. This has a delicious, distinctive flavor that is also wonderful for juices. Mangosteen is becoming better known globally for it’s remarkable healing properties.

DURIAN (TU-RIAN)

LYCHEE (LINJEE)

R A M B U TA N (NGOR)

Covered by a red, roughly textured rind that is inedible but easily removed, the inside of a lychee consists of a layer of sweet, translucent white flesh with a grape-like texture. The centre contains a single glossy brown nut-like seed that should not be eaten.

The name is derived from the Malay word, rambut, meaning hair, which is a perfect name. The fuzzy, colorful covering of this fruit is unforgettable. Peeling this dramatic covering away reveals a firm, white, translucent flesh. It tastes like a sweet version of a pear, and is a lovely centerpiece for any dinner table.

One of the most bizarre fruits on earth. It is a rich, unique tasting fruit, but to some, it is a putrid-smelling, lousy excuse for a food. It has an extremely strong and unpleasant aroma, as well as a deadly look. Trying this fruit is a step into another world. Durian is quite expensive and due to it’s powerfully imposing smell; it is actually banned from many hotels, busses and planes.

Na Tin Spicy Garden There is a gem of a garden just on the outskirts of Ao Nang called Na Tin Spicy Garden. A visit here is a pleasure that shouldn’t be missed.

40

www.krabi-magazine.com

Piet (pronounced Pete) Ruijters was a pharmacist in the Netherlands who has always been fascinated with the botanical source of pharmacopeia products.

The friendly people, beautiful nature and tropical climate originally drew him to this region, and for many years, Ruijters owned a property in Ao Nang. On retirement however, he decided to move here permanently. Piet had a vision for this garden way back, and in 2003, 2 years before retiring, he acquired the land that is now “Na Tin Spicy Garden”. This garden is an outstanding educational resource, displaying medicinal and spice plants. In 2006, Piet began planting spices and botanical specimens and almost immediately, visitors came to see what he had. Over the years the garden has grown and developed with more specimens and varieties, and it remains a treasure in Ao Nang for anyone interested in plants. School groups and tourists alike enjoy the beauty and information of this magical place. Located on Ban Na Tin, not far from the Nopparattara Beach area, the garden focuses June | 2015

on spices and medicinal plants, but what Piet loves most is explaining why and how the plants are used. One favorite example is cinnamon. Most people don’t realize that cinnamon is actually the bark of a tree – his cinnamon tree has scars all up and down from him chipping away pieces for guests to smell. His enthusiasm for plants and their power is evident when you meet this kind gardener. Piet loves to take people through the garden and break off leaves, berries, roots or bark and have them smell it. He will ask what you think it is and he will smile with glee if you guess it right, or happily tell you what it is, if you don’t. His

41

knowledge of plants, their history and their place in pharmacopeia is extensive – you will come home with more appreciation for plants than you ever knew you could have. I asked Piet what his favorite plants were, and he quickly answered those in the ginger family. This family has no dangerous species and is aromatic. They have many interesting uses as spice, medicine and perfume. The roots, seeds and flowers are all available for use. Mr. Ruijters is a powerhouse of information about plants and loves to give tours of the garden. Tours are free of charge, and if you see a plant that you would like, cuttings and/or seeds are free for the taking. Many commonly used herbs and spices are highly anti-bacterial. If you add some of these aromatic plants to your food, (such as thyme or rosemary) you start the killing of bacteria and fungi so you begin conserving your food right away. As we passed by his pepper garden, Piet explained that the antibacterial properties are one of the important things that make chili peppers so popular in tropical regions. There are 2 gardeners who live at the Spicy Garden, working full time to keep it in shape. Walking this garden is a delightful experience and a good way to grow one’s appreciation for the many miraculous plants that Mother Nature has given us. The garden is open for visits every day (except Wednesday) from 9:00-12.00 and from 13:00-16:00

Guided tours with Piet are available on Tues, Thursday and Saturdays at 10:00am For more information, you can visit their website at:

TRASH HERO IS AT IT AGAIN!

46

www.krabi-magazine.com

T

rash Hero, a nationally recognized beach clean up organization that is gaining notoriety for it’s thorough and generous work on Koh Lipe in Satun province, has recently begun to turn heads in Krabi.

The branch coordinator and founder Colin Valnion, is a Canadian local who moved to Krabi in 2014. In January of this year, Valnion saw the vital need to clean the various beaches throughout his new home. He joined forces with Trash Hero Koh Lipe, and founded a second branch of Trash Hero here in Ao Nang. Since January, the local businesses and residents alike have offered tremendous support for Trash Hero, and this support is increasing steadily. The beach cleanup days held weekly have been a huge success, with one such cleanup collecting over 400Kg of trash. Each week the numbers vary but what’s important about this is that now there are more and more locals coming, more and more schools bringing students, more and more resorts participating, and more overall visibility of this issue. What this means is that Krabi is getting it. Krabi is a popular tourist destination because of it’s nature and scenery, if we destroy these things with our cigarette butts and plastic bottles then we won’t have any more tourists wanting to come here. This past month marked a milestone for the organization as the official sponsors for the event have tipped the scales at 30 resorts, restaurants and other locals businesses. Trash Hero has drawn in the recognition of a number of local schools who have brought many students to the events. This is very exciting, because what it takes to make behavioral changes like this is educating June | 2015

the youth about the benefits of keeping the environment clean. Older generations need to learn as well, but if the youth get a clear understanding of environmental issues and ways to keep it in check, then I have a feeling our future will look a lot brighter. Each event has consistently drawn the participation of around100 volunteers from a range of areas in Ao Nang. There are tourists just passing by, residents and business owners and others who are flocking from all walks of life to participate in these events. This past April’s Earth Day event was a tremendous success as over 20 resorts sent a large number of their staff to help out. The Secretary to the National Park Service in Ao Nang along with several resort GM’s spoke at the event. Ivan Berthelot the General Manager for IBIS styles resort outlined a number of green policies that IBIS resorts adhere to. Waste is a huge concern all around the world, not only in Thailand. Human beings create, use and destroy billions of metric tons of material event year; a good portion of this trash ends up in our oceans (which we rely on for climate stabilization). This pollution is harmful to millions of unsuspecting animals and ultimately to us. Nobody wants to hang around a pile of trash so we try to make the effort to put our rubbish in bins, which is then taken away by government agencies and burned or dumped into the ocean. It is important to understand that we all live on this planet. Political boundaries don’t matter - we are all in the same ecosystem - each

and every one of us has an impact on it. Not creating waste is the best way to combat this growing issue. Some small steps to consider taking if you want to reduce your contribution to the waste problem might be:

•Don’t buy plastic water bottles, reuse old bottles and/or buy water bottles •Bicycle or take public transportation to work, or if this isn’t an option, carpool •Start a garden •Start a compost bin for your food scraps •Bring your own bags to the grocery store don’t use plastic bags •Recycle whenever possible •Buy locally produced products •Buy groceries in bulk with less packaging This is only a short list of the many things you can do to make this world we all live in a cleaner place. If you are in Ao Nang and would like to get involved, come join Trash Hero’s beach cleanup, which happens every Sunday morning at 10am on Nopparat Thara Beach. If you can’t be there on Sunday, you can find them on Facebook and connect there. Every little bit makes a difference! www.facebook.com/trashheroaonang

Exotic Fishing in Thailand Nestled among the dramatic limestone karsts just 40 minutes north of Krabi, in the quiet and peaceful province of Phang-Nga, is a remote area where you can come and find your inner angler. An oasis in the seemingly endless fields of palm and rubber trees, Exotic Fishing Thailand - or EFT for short – has found a home. Founded by Canadian native Mike Bailey, Exotic Fishing Thailand just finished it’s second full season with tremendous success.

Mike Bailey, an avid sports fisherman, began his love of fishing, like many of us, when he was just a boy. He spent many weekends bass fishing in the Canadian lakes and rivers and later, when he grew tired of the local options, he traveled down to Mexico for Dorado, sailfish and many other fish. After getting hooked (no pun intended), his love for the sport took him around the world sporting fish in many exotic destinations. When at one time he was working in Korea, he began traveling to Thailand for the sun, beaches and the tremendous fishing opportunities. On one such trip he stumbled across a fish breeder in Bangkok and began contemplating the idea of giving up his job in the metal fabrication industry and building a career in what he loved to do, fishing. Soon after in 2011, Mike began looking throughout southern Thailand for land suitable for a large lake in which he could stock all his favorite exotic fish species and open a fishing resort . After a long search, he found a special plot of land of approximately 50 rai, in Phang-Nga. Nestled between two mountain ranges - one of which is named by the locals “The Eagles’ Nest” because of its numerous raptor residents – is the oasis he has named Exotic Fishing Thailand. The PH of the water was perfect, the price was right, the area was beautiful - time to start digging! Bailey began the project after consulting a range of experts about size, stocking densities, stocking ponds as needed and so on. The final main lake was set in the center of the land resting on approximately 25 rai or around 40,000 Sq. meters. At its center, the pond’s depth is just over five meters giving it a total volume of approximately 160 million liters of water. Mike created EFT with diversity in mind. Over 66 different species can be found at the main lake thus creating a huge range of potential catches for anyone wishing to try their luck with the rod. Goonch catfish from India, Arapaima from the Amazon and our local hero the Mekong Catfish from Thailand, are only some of the many species one can find on the end of their rod while testing the waters here. Krabi Magazine took the time to head out to EFT last March to see it for ourselves and to try our luck on the rod - we were not disappointed. Surrounded by endless trees extending to the horizon, the drive through Ao Luk and into Phang-Nga is a great event by itself. We meandered along the countryside weaving between the numerous mountain ranges that erupt through the region. Turning off the main road somewhere in Phang-Nga we headed off deeper into the jungle in search

52

of fishing paradise. After traveling along for a few kilometers we began to second-guess ourselves, but we persevered, and finally, after breaking through the jungle cover, we made it! Engines off, scooters go silent and we take everything in, this gorgeous location. It is a true masterpiece to behold. A long line of cliffs border the edges of the land on two sides creating an extreme valley in which the lake is located. This lake houses some the biggest and rarest freshwater species in the world. The lake is surrounded by 16 fishing platforms with covered seating areas from which avid anglers can cast their lines. We entered through the reception area and were greeted by the man himself, Mike Bailey, who came out with a huge smile on his face (I guess another great Arapaima just got hooked). He then escorted us through the reception area where we got a glimpse of the dining area, which serves the tasty and exclusive Arapaima burger. Afterwards we began the “around the world fishing tour”. This entails traveling to one end of the lake area where there are actually 8 other ponds; each one is stocked with a certain variety of fish. When the fish in the stocking ponds are big enough they are transferred into the main lake. The smaller stocking ponds are home to Amazonian Arapaima, Chao Phraya Catfish, Redtailed Catfish and a number of other exotic species. Next to the stocking ponds are numerous fish tanks with yet another vast variety of fish (smaller of course) from all around the world. These oversized tanks are set-up in groups and all fish in each of these tanks will be endemic to a certain region of the world. There is a South American section, African, Asian, and best of all a predatory section, which features the amazing African Tigerfish. This fish makes the piranha look like a mouse, but don’t get your hopes up to high, the Tigerfish are not stocked in the main lake for safety reasons. These are relegated to the glass fish tanks which makes seeing and taking photos of them easy but catching them impossible for now. After seeing the many different species of fish from around the world and taking some quick photos, we moved onto the Arapaima breeding ponds where Mike is currently in the process of starting his own population of Amazonian Arapaima. Mike can easily maintain the current stocking levels of Arapaima fish in the main lake. Mike mentions that the fishing tour we are currently on is actually a separate activity June | 2015

53

area in EFT. It is designed as an area where kids, schools and/or non-anglers can come see some amazing fish species and learn something new but not necessarily partake in fishing if they don’t want to. The fishing tour area is named the “Mountain View Fish Park” and is open the same hours as the main fishing pond. Private tours of the fish park area are available from Mike or his staff. As we continue on with the tour, we come to the main lake where we can see numerous splashes from the large fish surfacing for food, playing or marking their respective territories known to one another. The pond area is massive, extending over 25 rai, as it should be. It looks like it nearly extends to the horizon. From our platform we can see the other anglers casting their lines. The echoes of laughter, joy and triumph can be heard all around as the many anglers land a large catfish an Amazonian Arapaima or any of the other 66 species in the pond.

“The PH of the water was perfect, the price was right, the area was beautiful, which all together meant, time to start digging!” Looking westward on the lake, we notice that some land has been cleared. Upon asking Mike what the plans are for the area he replies that they are building a number of lakeside private villas, which will offer the serious angler an option to own their own place on the lake and also rent it out to other anglers while they are not around. The lakeside villas are currently planned to be complete sometime in mid to late 2016. Overall, Exotic Fishing Thailand really impressed us at Krabi Magazine. The area is stunning, the fish are huge and plentiful, the food was great and the staff are knowledgeable, friendly and ready to help with baiting, casting, taking photos and answering all your questions. We are looking forward to our trip back to this haven, and given than it is only 40 minutes from Ao Nang, I think our rendezvous will be happening sooner rather than later.

Exotic Fishing Thailand is located in Phang-Nga just a short 40 minute drive from Krabi. You can get in touch with them by visiting their website at: www.exoticfishingthailand.com or by calling them directly at 088-379-9377

Speak Like a Thai

Sawatdii ka , this lesson I would like to talk about useful expressions to use to ask someone out . When you want to ask someone out to do something together with you or going somewhere together, like in English you would say “Shall we…?” in Thai language we use a very simple pattern below;

ä» bpai + do something / somewhere + ¡Ñ¹ÁÑé /gan mái/? For instance; [1] 仡Թ¢ŒÒǡѹÁÑé bpai gin kâao gan mái? Shall we go to get something to eat together? To eat in general (not specify what to eat) in Thai is ¡Ô¹¢ŒÒÇ gin kâao

BOUTIQUE HOTEL MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST www.hotelmanagementasia.com

¡Ô¹ gin (to eat) , ¢ŒÒÇ kâao (rice) ; we say eat rice (although we’re going to eat noodles or non rice dish) because Thai people mainly eat rice, [2] ä»´Ù˹ѧ¡Ñ¹ÁÑé bpai duu nng gan mái? Shall we go to watch a movie together? ´Ù duu (to watch, to look at), ˹ѧ nng (movie, film) [3] ä»à¡ÒÐä˧¡Ñ¹ÁÑé bpai gò Ngai gan mái? Shall we go to Ngai island together? à¡ÒÐ gò (island) [4] ä»´Ù¾ÃÐÍҷԵ µ¡´Ô¹¡Ñ¹ÁÑé bpai duu prá-aa-tít dtòk din gan mái? Shall we go to watch sunset together? ¾ÃÐÍҷԵ prá-aa-tít = the sun µ¡ dtòk = to fall, to drop ¾ÃÐÍҷԵ µ¡ prá-aa-tít dtòk = suset To answer to these questions, you just simply repeat the first verb you hear in the question. Example; Question: 仡Թ¢ŒÒǡѹÁÑé bpai gin kâao gan mái? The verb in the question is “ä» bpai” ‘Yes’ answer: 令‹Ð bpai kâ (female speakers) or 令ÃѺ bpai kráp (male speaker) ‘No’ answer: You can directly answer äÁ‹ä» mâi bpai but it might sounds to harsh. You can say ‘I would love to go’ ÍÂҡ令‹Ð yak bpai kâ/kráp But I am not free ᵋäÁ‹Ç‹Ò§ dtàe mâi wâang (ᵋ dtàe = but , Ç‹Ò§ wâang = free, available) Kru Mod is a full time Thai teacher based in Bangkok, you can contact her through her website: www.learnthaiwithmod.com

Rock Karsts

Formed millennia ago from the remains of calcium based lifeforms such as snails, crustations, and corals, these immense structures began to protrude forth from the water depths of The Andaman sea to provide Krabi with the stunning backdrop it has become world-famous for.

T

he limestone that was made by fallen crustaceans has led Krabi into the limelight‌These limestone cliffs have formed some amazingly diverse and wonderfully shaped rock pillars that make up the landscape of Krabi and have given it that signature look and feel that we have all come to know and love. The original formation of these limestone cliffs was caused by the adherence of dead crustaceans, but during this process then then young structures were weaker and exposed to the effects of the oceans. The awesome power of the ocean was able to shape the many pillars by a very slow process

60

of wearing down the rocks edges with each passing wave. The rock limestone is a relatively (we’re speaking in rock terms now) porous and lighter rock making it great for rock climbing as anchors are easy to set and there is never a shortage of foot-holes and grips to hang from. It is because of these age-old limestone karsts that Krabi has received a world recognized seat on the top 10 destinations for rock climbing worldwide. The government has realized they special quality of Krabi and the rock climbing

enthusiasts that come from all over the globe to try their skills on the Krabi karsts, so they have opened an international competition with a hefty first place prize of $10,000 USD which has now begun to draw in people form all around the globe. You can find awesome beauty from these karsts throughout Krabi, from Koh Lanta to Ao Luk and everywhere in between. So far though, we felt that the most intense and awe inspiring limestone karsts are those on Ton Sai beach and those in the Thalane bay area.

English Teacher/ Fashion Designer…

By. Annmarie Bustamante After finishing college in San Francisco, California I wanted to take a year off to inspire myself in Asia. I landed a teaching job in Phetchabun, Thailand which would commence after taking a quick trip through Europe. There I marveled at the decadent fashion of the International Film Festival in Venice, the street fashion and graffiti of Berlin, and the traditional dress of Turkey. I took thousands of photos and begun sharing them on a blog through my portfolio website, www.CasuallyUncommon.com. I love showcasing weird and interesting fashion people don’t see everyday. Aside from blogging, I have been selling homemade accessories through there and on my Etsy site for almost two years. Mostly by combining old jewelry pieces and reworking scraps left over from a few of my metalsmithing courses. I have recently launched my first swimwear line, “Tunage”. The swimsuits are constructed from 90% recycled fabric and all created by me in my apartment in Thailand (normally on the weekends when I have free time). I produced an amazing photo shoot in Thailand’s beautiful, Krabi. We chose Chicken

64

Island, grabbed a long tail boat, and some champagne and headed out to make some magic. I had a diverse group of ladies, A Philippine Travel Blogger/Renowned Trans Model, A Kiwi Hostel Owner and Rock Climber, an up-and-coming English Singer/Superstar and lastly, a Californian Minister/Heath Enthusiast/Movie Maker. A talented bunch to say the least, with the direction of our passionate photographer, Adam Bulter of www.geckophoto.com and the hair and makeup stylings of the incredible Krabi local, Sarisa Ohmmarit, our shoot turned out better than I could have ever imagined. The group vibed off each other and shared their experience in a way only sisters can. They rocked my edgy, vintage, cartoon creations and having Thailand as our set was just unspeakably serene. So if you interested in seeking out the diverse fashions of the world, browsing my portfolio or taking a peak in my shop, please feel free to! I hope to grow my brand while networking and learning what I can while teaching English abroad. Annmarie can be found carousing the world or on her blog at: www.casuallyuncommon.com www.krabi-magazine.com

Lets talk personal with Layana Resort & Spa’s General Manager Stefan Heintze

KM: It is now the four years that you live on this beautiful island Koh Lanta and therefore your 5th Green Season this year. What do you enjoy most during this time of the year from May until October? Stefan: It is the freshness and lushness of the island. On the mainland there is an impression that Koh Lanta is difficult to access during the Green Season, but this was maybe 10 years ago the case, while now life continues normally, but more quietly though. KM: We understand that at Layana Resort also during the quieter time of the year that resort is open all year round and that many Europeans still travel to Koh Lanta and stay at your resort. Why? Stefan: Well, on one hand it is the name and brand behind Layana Resort & Spa, which stand for an absolute peaceful environment & impeccable service. Guests travel all the way from Europe as well enjoying our top beach front location and yes again for the pampering factor, regardless if it may rain occasionally. KM What is your leisure & excursion team offering your guests ,when they decided to explore the island or want to venture out in the evening? Stefan: There plenty of activities which we offer our guests, all organized exclusively for Layana Guests with our own boats, yacht or hotel cars by own dedicated team. Guests often love to join our sunset cruises in the mangrove forests or during the day to go on one our

68

organized kayaking trips. If the weather permits, we also bring our guests to various snorkeling trips, which is always great fun only for Layana guests, with our crew and sometimes even chefs on board. KM: Stefan, of course we would have the burning question, what would you as the General Manager of Koh Lanta’s leading resort recommend any guest to do, while vacationing on Koh Lanta during the Green Season now? Stefan: Koh Lanta is famous for its great dining options in Saladan in the evenings, which is like a miniature fisherman’s wharft. The Lanat Seafood Restaurant and Black Pearl are extremely popular among our guests. Shopping as well in the late afternoon in Saladan or in Old Town at the East Coast of the Island

is a must for some great souvenirs to take home. There is also the National Park at the South of the island, which is great during this time of the year for some tracking and visiting the waterfalls in the rain forests. KM: Sunsets? Where do you watch the best sunsets on the island? Stefan: Of course on Long Beach at Layana Resort & Spa, our Hotel Bar is even called Sundowner Bar and we feature special Happy Hour prices during Sunset Hours. Everyone is welcome also non resident guests and it always like a great happing place before dinner time. KM: Thank you Stefan and we wish you a great Green Season ahead… www.krabi-magazine.com

Yoga Holidays Feeling as though you would like a holiday not based around beer, smoking and eating 7/11 food at 3am? There is no more perfect a place than Thailand to enjoy downtime that involves beach walks, delicious food and lush sunsets that nourish the soul. Now Krabi has so much to offer in the way of holidays with a spiritual purpose, a choice between yoga retreats, healing courses or deepening your yoga practice with a month long teacher-training course. If you are a beginner and just always liked the sound of yoga or perhaps attending classes regularly. This is a guide to choosing the retreat or course that will ignite your soul, giving you the right physical and mental challenge.

The Type of Yoga There are many disciplines of yoga and this is an important factor in deciding what fits your style of practice. Hatha: Essentially the roots of all yoga, the physical practice will be slower and a deeper, a more spiritual form in classes and theory. Ideal for: Those with the desire to learn the beginnings and entire lifestyle of yoga. Vinyassa: This is a flowing, dynamic form of practice, using breathlinking movements, with emphasis placed on the sun-salutation postures. Ideal for: Those needing a strong, powerful practice to shake up body and mind. Ashtanga: Strong focus on vigorous physical postures and powerful breath control. This practice produces intense internal heat and sweat while learning the 1-4 series of postures, so it can be competitive. Ideal for: Those that desire a robust, physical practice. Yin: A much slower practise that focuses on longer held postures to release muscles and connective tissues in the body. Ideal for: Those who struggle to sit still but desire to learn patience in body and mind.

What is a yoga retreat? The word retreat itself evokes images of backing away from the norm, leaving the grind of daily life, work and stress behind. Retreats have become more popular due to our modern life demands that have us constantly switched onto our phones, wifi and social media. Taking a break with a purpose by concentrating on meditation and yoga asana classes can be more fulfilling for the body and mind. A chance to not only unwind but some view retreats as an opportunity of selfdiscovery, a method of dealing with past pain, hurt or heartbreak and essentially a space for quiet and reflection.

“ I f there is one thing yoga has taught me through teaching and practice, is that flexibility of the body is less important than the flexibility of your mind and being open to the changes and transformation that yoga will deliver time and time again. Yoga is much, much more than strutting a posture, these postures do however lead us to a greater understanding of our breath and through this our present state, so never be disheartened by ‘not being flexible’. Yoga is an all encompassing lifestyle so there is no existence of good or bad, it is for every individual and body type” Suzi Hall

What is Yoga Teacher Training?

. Teacher Training in association with Ashtak Yoga, India

Even if you can’t imagine yourself teaching, this is a great way to truly immerse yourself. There’s a lot more to yoga and these courses teach you about the important philosophy, lifestyle, meditation and pranayama; which is the expansion of breath within the body, teaching skills as well as the asanas (postures).

Next course: 28th March 2016 – 21st April 2016

The courses start at 200 hours, which fits into a month and are varied in price. Most will offer a certificate with the worldwide Yoga Alliance, gaining the ability to teach in the UK, USA and Oz.

What you can expect

Klong Dao, Koh Lanta

This is not an easy option, meditation and pranayama can start at sunrise with approximately 3 to 4 hours daily of physical asana classes to practice, learn to teach and adjust others in the postures. The courses allow for one day off a week and also consist of theory classes: anatomy and physiology lessons, chanting, yoga philosophy, history and explaining the 8 limbs of yoga.

. Yin Teacher Training

They may also cover Ayuveda; ancient Indian alternative healing and Kriyas; which are methods of cleansing the body. Doshas; which are an examination of 3 different bodily humours that make up our individual constitutions. Mudras; particularly hand mudras which are held to increase the flow of Prana, the yogic energy in the body and Chakras; which are the 7 energy centres of the body. Both retreats and teacher training can be intense for the mind and body. The essential nature of yoga is to question and sometimes rock your comfort zones, so there can be moments of elation mixed with difficult experiences. Expect to make friends and spend a lot of time discovering yourself even if that was not the original planyoga is potentially full of surprises. Many of these courses also offer social time to get to know fellow students, with shared meals, movie nights and trips organized locally to visit other islands.

. Daily yoga and meditation classes Next course 1st April 2016 (12 days)

UNPLUG IN KOH JUM KOH JUM ISLAND IS STILL THE QUINTESSENTIAL DESTINATION IN KRABI PROVINCE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AUTHENTIC THAI VILLAGE LIFE AND DEVELOPMENT THAT IS STILL A SMALL FOOTPRINT.

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? 74

We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family-run character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain

authentic without and significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors www.krabi-magazine.com

come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it! This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum.

June | 2015

Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about 1 hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and thencontinue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written - Krabi,Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem

Kruat pier. Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We then went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb Fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience!

CHEERS TO YOUR HEALTH…

“Let’s raise our glasses to health; Cheers”!

You’ll hear this commonly used phrase at weddings, birthday parties and almost every social gathering where we are honoring the lives of those whom we are endeared to. When we say this we are sharing our hearts desire for these individuals to walk in total health, that they will never see sickness or disease and that they will have a long and healthy life. I’m all for cheering health but the question lies in; what is real health anyway? Before we go into gaining understanding as to what health is; let’s take a look at what health is not.

H

By. Zina Docto

ealth is not spending hours in the gym trying to burn off the many calories that we find ourselves consuming on a diet typically filled with refined and process foods. It’s not focusing on what to eat or what not to eat and then being led by guilt and self-condemnation to go and sweat it out. Many find themselves bound by this picture of health only to wind up frustrated and feeling paralyzed in finding the solution towards real health. Health is about much more than just food and fitness. I assure, you health is about much, much more.

are Air, Water, Food, Exercise, Sunlight, Rest and Relationships. I have been fortunate enough to have spent the last 15+ years pointing others towards making this same discovery towards overall health.

Webster’s Dictionary defines health as the condition of being sound in the mind, body and spirit; especially: freedom from physical disease or pain. In other words HEALTH is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

When you are making a decision about anything which applies to these seven areas, ask this simple question, “Are you a nutrient or a toxin”? Applying this healthy equation has been a simple cure all to keeping me in total health for over 20+ years. There is much to be said about what real health is but the principles are quite simple. Setting off on the journey to discovering this is one of the best decisions you will make in your entire life because simply said, it will affect every area of your life.

I realised decades ago that in order to discover true health I would have to discover me; the whole of me. I had to discover who I was in order to care for what I was. I agree with Mr. Noah Webster who coined the definition of health, that there are three elements to who I am; that being mind, body and spirit. I discovered that if I learned to care for all three of these areas of who I was, then I would ultimately walk in total health. I began to challenge and gain personal understanding and experience in what I believe are not just two primary areas of health; that which most focus on (food and exercise). I discovered there are seven overall areas of who and what we are that present true health. They

76

Through all of the education I received, I boiled things down to a simple catch phrase; “Good stuff in bad stuff out”. I then created an easily applied rule to live by that aids in restoring and maintaining health in these seven areas. The simple equation is “Nutrients - Toxins = Health”.

Cheers to you if you are on that journey now. Here’s one of the many examples where you can apply the healthy equation, Nutrients - Toxins = Health for each of the seven areas.

www.krabi-magazine.com

• Air: Increase the amount of oxygen in the air you breathe by allowing fresh air into every room of your home, office and transportation. You can start doing this now. If you think about your environment, you will discover that most of where we find ourselves is indoors. Begin opening up the windows to your environment. Let the air in. You need it. • Water: Avoid soda, coffee, tea and other liquids that are not primarily pure water. • Food: Make a meal where the vegetables take

center stage, such as a broccoli carrot salad or cucumber and beet medley. You’ll never go wrong eating living whole foods.

• Exercise: Do a physical activity that you enjoy in lengths of time spanning approximately 20-60 minutes in duration.

• Sunlight: Use ‘sun sense’. If you feel you’ve

had too much sun, you probably have. Drink lots of water when in the sun; stay hydrated. The sun provides nutrients but use it wisely.

• Rest: Establish a relaxing evening routine like listening to comforting music. Reading is also a great way to unwind after a long activity filled day. • Relationships: Keep a journal. Write down your thoughts and feelings. Use this as a resource that you can go back to in order to address emotions that you may have ignored. It is a great tool to have as you can express yourself without doing anyone harm. You can return to the journal to discover new ways of communicating in a positive manner The next time you make your way down the grocery isle and begin to reach out for your next purchase; ask the question, “Are you a nutrient or a toxin”? Remember, it’s about good stuff in bad stuff out. Zina is the founder of “i AM WOMAN”. Fruit Salad You are most likely in Krabi right now reading this magazine or will be shortly, therefore you are getting a first hand feeling for the intense heat that exists in a place such as Krabi. If you are looking for a great dish to help alleviate the heat, then look no further than a delicious, beautiful, healthy and super easy fruit salad. There is not a specific way to prepare this dish thats part of the beauty of it. You only need fruit - whatever kind you like, antelopes, mango, apple, oranges, bananas (one of my favorites) kiwis, strawberries, the list goes on and on. Especially in Thailand where the variety of fruits is so very different than those available in Europe. It’s a worthwhile dish to prepare as you can whip it up in a few minutes and then “bam” you’ve got yourself an amazing meal, or just treat it as a salad to eat alongside a main course. For this recipe we will be giving you we will use the following fruits: kiwi - 3 whole fruits (cut in cubes) strawberries - 200 grams (cut in quarters) grapes - 1 whole bunch of grapes (uncut) cantaloupe - half a cantaloupe (cut into cubes) honeydew melon - half of one whole fruit (cut into cubes) Pineapple - half of a pineapple (cut into large cubes) Steps: 1. Take your fruit that has already been cut (I hope) and place it all in large mixing bowl. Mix the fruit together thoroughly and then place in the refrigerator and let cool down for 1-2 hours. Remove after cooling is complete and enjoy! Wasn’t that easier than anything you’ve ever done!
