AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..

12

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.

KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

ON KRABI

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay.

June|2016

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

STOCK UP ON YOUR WATER! The heat is strong here in Thailand, stronger than it’s been in many decades, and it shows no signs of breaking. This heat has brought with it some of the most intense drought conditions in the region in the past 30 years. The world is a constant shifting environment; these shifts have become more evident in the last five years as global warming has become

more evident. The drought has been felt throughout Thailand, but has been worse in Northeast Thailand, a heavily agrarian region of the country. Pray this doesn’t affect crops to a great extent. We will know between October and November, when the crops are harvested. Other regions of

the globe have also been affected by effects of climate change. Droughts have become widespread and frequent over the past decade. These are signs that we – as the primary contributor to atmospheric carbon – need to reduce our effect on the environment. Bicycle or car pool to work when you can, bring your own bags to the grocery store

BE CAREFUL WITH MONKEYS! A number of the monkeys that live in Krabi have been tested by the Thai Ministry of Health for carrying the dengue virus and an alarming number of those tested were found to test positive for the virus. This doesn’t mean you need to completely avoid the monkeys when you see them, but feeding one or having them jump on you would not be recommended. They can carry with them a number of other viruses and

14

bacteria (in addition to dengue) so it’s recommended to look, but don’t touch. Dengue is not a deadly virus to those with a strong immune system (95% survival of individuals between 11-60). It feels like a very bad flu, but eventually your body will overcome the virus. For those who are over the ages of 60 or very young children, the virus can pose serious health concerns and greater caution should be taken.

UNLEASH your inner potential

a look into how a young man from Canada is making headway helping others achieve their goals.

A

s a student and college level athlete, Michael Carbone had few moments where his time was not occupied. His prospects looked great as he was scouted by Major League talent hunters and he ventured into the third year of his college level baseball career. His future looked brighter than ever when he was struck in the back by a ripping fastball. He was sustained until the end of the game only by the adrenaline rushing through him from 20,000 pairs of eyes. After the ninth inning, the agony set in. Michael was a serious competitor, and he played in subsequent games after his injury, but physical rigor could only carry him so far. A few games and X-rays later revealed nothing out of the ordinary, but the pain wouldn’t subside. The team doctor and his coaches told him it was just a bruise and that he should just keep playing. He kept on swinging and playing at his super octane level, but his throbbing back continued to cause serious distraction. After a CT scan revealed a fractured vertebra, Michael told us, “I’m just happy I didn’t break my back.” His playing level continued to drop until the hope of playing in the big leagues slowly faded.

20

www.krabi-magazine.com

He left the team shortly after and, with the abundant amount of free time on his hands, he got an office job, working the normal life, but there just seemed a void in his days. Then a voice said “Why not try on some new shoes?” That’s exactly what Michael did and he took on the prospect of running a marathon. “I just wanted to do a sport where I was in full control of the outcome,” he said. Finishing his first marathon in Montreal after training for only 4 months, Michael felt invincible. But upon returning to work, his colleagues asked him, “Now that you’ve finished a marathon, what’s next?” Michael was surprised, but decided to push himself to the next level for endurance athletes, an Ironman challenge! From the brink of failure to the mountain of success, an Ironman triathlon is a true challenge of both body and mind. At the time Michael didn’t know how to swim, but an Ironman includes a 2-mile swim, so Michael still pushed on. Nine months later Michael completed his first Ironman. Time for a mind shift! The once seemingly impossible feat was something Michael had accomplished. When he signed up for the race nine months before, he didn’t know how to train properly, he didn’t have a serious bike, and he was completely unprepared both physically and mentally. He found his key to success. “To accomplish a difficult task – it’s not only one’s knowledge of how to do something, it’s one’s DRIVE to do something,” he said. Michael’s lack of knowledge and physical ability were bumps in the proverbial road, but with his determination to cross the finish line, he overcame each hurdle in his path. He learned to adapt his body and mind to achieve success. Once the race was finished, this new sense of seemingly unattainable success in other aspects of his life now seemed much easier to overcome. The first hurdle was his job. The 9-to5 rate race is what most of us are stuck in. This notion to work for a large corporation, pushing papers, and adhering to the company’s agendas is appropriate and required. This is what Michael had been taught in both school and his social circle. But there were those that marched to a different beat, and Michael wanted to be like them. Not knowing how, he knew that he wanted to free himself from the shackles the job he was trapped in. A thought occurred to him. Why not start an online business? June | 2016

Sounds easy, right? Just create a website with some photos and the clients start pouring in, right? Not exactly. Michael knew he wanted to help others achieve their goals but didn’t know how. He was a decent poker player in college days. He decided to teach people how to play better poker. He didn’t know much about marketing or how to set up his businesses, but within a few months, he was online and taking new clients.

To get in touch with Michael, visit his website at www.michaelcarbone.ca or download his podcasts on itunes

“I didn’t really know what I was doing, and I made mistakes. But I learned from them all along the way.” Within a year, his online poker coaching website was earning him enough income to work only a few hours a week. As the desire to help others achieve more from their lives had always been a part of Michael’s dream, it was natural that he wanted to share with the world how they could do as he had done. So was born Unleash Your Potential, a guide to help others achieve their personal goals. He created a number of online courses to help others achieve success and began marketing his courses through social media – Twitter, Instagram and iTunes podcasts. Since the inception of Unleash in June 2015, it has garnered the attention of the iTunes community by being ranked in the top 10 podcasts for business, self-help and education. Currently it can be found in the What’s Hot List for business. Michael has been helping people from around the planet achieve their goals through one-onone coaching, webinars and his podcasts. His plan is to continue growing the Unleash brand name to continue helping people achieve their goals.

Gain wisdom

Now that is great know how…

Today, we travel on the internet highway with the windows of our mind rolled down, our hair pulled back, ready to whizz through cyberspace, pursuing and discovering answers for almost any question imaginable. Zooming up, down, in and out, without ever leaving our seat cushion, merely clicking away and pressing buttons on a keyboard. Would you like to know how to make an ethnic recipe from a land thousands of miles away from your dining table? Get online, and – voila! In moments, you have the knowledge. Then it’s a quick jaunt to the local market to get ingredients to prepare your exotic delicacy. How many stars are in the galaxy? How many cells are our bodies made of and how do we care for ourselves from the inside out or the outside in? The questions of life are being answered more and more readily through our global community and the use of technology. We are so fortunate to have access to such tremendous knowledge. We can

26

now see and discover life with a whole new set of eyes, to grasp the things that in the past were only dreamed of.

We are gaining great knowledge, but are we truly discovering the answers to our questions? The questions, once answered, become the cornerstones on which we build our lives. Knowledge is not enough to help us achieve the dreams, goals, and purpose that you have set out before you. The knowledge you gain without implementation is foolishness.

Many people already know that eating poorly produces poor health. They know that smoking cigarettes and over indulging in alcohol can create a plethora of sickness, disease, and even lead to death. Yet hundreds of thousands of people across the globe smoke and drink in excess. We cannot stop at just gaining knowledge. Knowledge alone puffs up and leads to pride, arrogance and self- righteousness. People sit around the table, chatting about various topics that they have an understanding of. Subjects like global warming, child trafficking, animal cruelty, world hunger, obesity, and more. Yet who are the ones that actually take action concerning the topics they discuss? Is it you? If you find yourself feeling a bit convicted or uncomfortable about this question, let me give you one word that could revolutionize your life and the way you view and act upon the knowledge you gain. Wisdom. We must seek to gain wisdom. I like the phrase, “Wisdom is knowledge applied.” It’s lacing up your running shoes and applying the knowledge you’ve gained, thus reaping the benefits. It goes from your head, shuffles through your heart and then down to your sneakers. Now you’re living!

www.krabi-magazine.com

If you do not take time to apply the knowledge you gain, it’s like you are looking in the mirror, walking away and then trying to forget what you look like. In reality, this is impossible. Once you’ve looked at yourself, this truth is forever embedded in your mind. It is this way as well with knowledge – true knowledge. Once you discover true knowledge, you are left with the personal responsibility of what you are going to do with it. Will you ignore it or ignite it?

1.

Pray: Are a person of faith? Call out to the One whom you believe is the holder of all wisdom. There may be a power that knows you better than yourself. Pray and ask for wisdom.

2.

Meditate: This will give you an opportunity to sort through the clutter resounding within yourself and position you to move forward in your personal conviction.

3.

Challenge: Test circumstances that concern you. It’s okay to fail on the road to discovering your sweet spot for living. When we challenge life, we often find that we not only gain wisdom, but through our failing, character is developed as well.

Through the course of years, my ministry to those who are trying to overcome weight issues, health concerns, and emotional life-controlling problems quickly brings us to looking at the concept of knowledge versus wisdom. These individuals know that they should or should not have proceeded in the manner they did. But they remained stuck. For these longing souls, the joy of having someone to go to removes the veil of isolation, paralysis, and the inability to overcome.

4.

Rationalize, reason and research: It is very important that you to take time to logically and emotionally balance your personal obstacles. Take time and do your homework. Seek knowledge pertaining to your issue until you have enough information to proceed. This time of assessing will help equip you with confidence to move forward.

They also realize that they are not alone and that others face the same obstacles they face. This can provide a huge breakthrough and give emotional courage to face the challenge of vulnerability and often, the overwhelming feeling of being exposed. You may be on one side or the other of the plumb line of wisdom. If you find yourself having tons of knowledge, but do not believe you have gained wisdom that has provided a sufficient foundation for living your life in abundance, here are a few thoughts that may help you begin moving forward on the road beyond knowledge to catapult you to wisdom beyond your years.

DIVE IN

Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us. The underwater world is rich in life, but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste. Thank you!

TIDE TABLES KRABI

If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish).

JUNE

Over 150 islands dot the coastline, offering a plethora of safe havens for fish and coral to live and grow. A number of these islands are only rock outcroppings without any beaches, making them ominous and stunning to look at and great for snorkeling and to experience the amazing underwater life. There are many soft and hard corals that grow underwater and provide small cracks and crevices for fish and small crustaceans to hide in. If you have the breath in you and have the desire, you can head out on a snorkeling expedition and dive in to see what you can find!

ONE DAY IN NOVEMBER, REPLACING BOOTS AND WARM CLOTHES FOR SHORTS AND FLIP-FLOPS, I CHANGED MY LIFE RADICALLY AND FOREVER… 38

www.krabi-magazine.com

The plane landed in Ho Chi Minh City – the largest city in Vietnam. I knew very little about Vietnam, let alone Asia, but was excited about this new step in my life nonetheless. All of my friends and relatives had just assumed I would go to Europe, so for me to go to Asia was a big surprise to everyone. Learning about my “experiment,” many of my friends and family believed I would return home shortly after I left – return home to a house in St. Petersburg – to a most familiar life in a beautiful city, but under perpetual gray skies. But my experiment has been delayed and, although I my parents thought this experiment would be short-lived, my “home” has seemed to materialize here in Asia. My notion of “home” has moved several time zones and eight thousand kilometers from dear St. Petersburg. Since my arrival in Krabi I have realized my decision was a great one. Krabi is so full of light, textures, faces, colors, viewpoints, and so much more. Asia, as a whole, has been a beautiful place! The attitude of Asia has been patiently and carefully leading me to love, freedom and harmony. This continent has the ability to completely turn your life upside down, show you another side of life, and another way to look at life. It can be difficult, but if you surrender to its power, it can be a wonderful experience, blasting the mind and opening the heart. My interest in photography began with the interest in men – their personalities, emotions, and moods. So in my work, a lot of portraits. When I look at someone, I wonder – what is he thinking? What dreams does he have? Why does he have such sad eyes? When I take the camera in my hand, a thrill ripples through my body. I have the opportunity to unravel a mystery, to discover something new, to catch some point – something previously hidden, but very important. I see the beauty in others, all different types of beauty.

Sometimes I need to help my subjects open up by comforting them with words of encouragement. It is very important if I am to learn more about my subjects that they are relaxed and comfortable. Photography for me is about the lifestyle, taste and shapes as well as the diversity of tones and contrasts. Photography offers me a great outlet to pass on what I see and feel to others through my photographs. The desire for freedom, my love of art, and my constant cycle of ideas have culminated in my becoming a photographer. Being from St. Petersburg, I have seen countless outlets and locations for taking spectacular photographs – it was a great place for opening up one’s creativity and development. It was here that my passion for photography was born. I am grateful to my motherland and for the friends who supported my decision to go where I’m happy. Now I am looking for new light and angles for my photos, for new inspirations to drive me but most of all for other artists to learn with. Now I live and work in Krabi, This is my home and source of inspiration. After traveling to different cities and countries in Asia, I wanted to convey the emotions I felt through my pictures. I want to share my passion and encourage other people all over the world – as much as possible – to travel. No material possessions are a substitute for experience. Open your eyes and your interests in life. Take the time for it. Health to you and inexhaustible energy. Love, be loved and happy! Health to you and inexhaustible energy. Love, be loved and happy!

A Stone’s throw away, TUBKEAK MINI GUIDE

A day’s out on the beach, away from it all and just pure bliss

Tubkeak Beach is located a convenient 20 minutes from downtown Ao Nang. It can easily be reached by motorbike, taxi, or car. The 20 minutes might seem like a little hike when you have Ao Nang beach only a short 10 minute walk from your hotel or villa. Rest assured, the 20 minutes you’ll spend on a bike or car is well worth the trip. Tubkeak Beach has a huge row of large pine trees that enclose the beach and offer visitors nice, natural shading. Although the beach is in the presence of many of the big end 5 star resorts of Krabi, there is still a few local restaurants where you can gorge yourself with fantastic cuisine. The resorts on Tubkeak Beach are Tubkeak Sunset Resort, Tubkeak Boutique Resort, Anyavee Tubkeak Resort and The Amari. Visitors to Tubkeak Beach have full access to the restaurants at any of the above mentioned resorts. The food is a certainly worth the trip – at any of the restaurants, the dining is exquisite and watching the sunset melt below the horizon is truly a sight to remember. We personally recommend you take a trip up the Naga Trek. It is a hiking trail which has its trail head just beyond The Amari resort. This trail head can be easily reached by taking a motorbike past the resorts, continuing on the only road coming through Tubkeak, which ends about one kilometer after The Amari. There is a park ranger present who will take your name prior to embarking on the mountain. Also, there are modest drinks and snacks available at this checkpoint. The trek itself is a highlight for Krabi. One of the must-do activities in the area. Climb to the top (about 600 meters above sea level) and take in the vastness of the landscape. Catch a great snapshot of you and your climbing partner sitting on the rock ledge (the famous photos to get at the top of the mountain). Then climb down and dive into the rich saltine waters of Tubkeak Beach, sip on a margarita from Anyavee Tubkeak Resort and just let the day melt away into night.

Dairy Hut Farm

by Aleshka Nazarova

P

etting zoo, located in Phang Nga, the neighboring province of Krabi, about 100 kilometers from Ao Nang on the way to the island of Phuket. Dairy Hut farm can be seen easily from the road as it is located under a huge rock painting. In the park about 100 animals, such as llamas, alpacas, horses, and camels reside. Some of these species were imported from abroad. Dairy farm is home to a flock of friendly sheep which you and your children can relax and feed. There are different pens for both adult sheep and sound lambs. The adults eat hard pellets and the baby lambs can be fed sweet milk. To communicate, to touch, and to feed the animals is a wonderful way to have a spectacular day with your children. There are also a group of small ponies which are incredibly friendly. If you want to introduce your children to the horses and teach them how to ride, Dairy farm is the perfect place.

44

www.krabi-magazine.com

In addition to the animals in the park you can find many sculptures of fairy-tale characters, mini cabins, a fish pond, and a playground with rides as well as a Ferris wheel. The scenery provides for great photography opportunities. The park entrance fee is 80 baht for adults and 40 baht for children. About an hour’s drive to reach the Dairy farm, it is well worth the trip. It’s a little oasis – a true tropical paradise. It all began with a restaurant serving Thai and European cuisine. The restaurant is still in operation today and is one of my favorite places to visit as the food is astounding and the prices cannot be beaten. So make sure that after visiting the zoo, have a bite at the on-site restaurant. Delicious food, fast service, attention to each client. I guarantee you will be satisfied! The restaurant is situated on two floors, and it is located right above the pond. You can dine and view schools of fish and lilies with dragon flies passing by. There are also a number of other attractions on site such as air-conditioned rooms where you can book nights to stay and a banquet hall where you can arrange a holiday for many people. Recently built, there is now a café, just a bit farther over the lake, sporting great views of immense rocky karsts. If you are not hungry, you can enjoy an invigorating coffee with a stunning view from the window of this new cafe. Next to the restaurant is the animal park and it is one of the most popular places among travelers passing through this region. Make the trip, you’ll be sure not to regret it.

THA POM Now let us introduce you to a mangrove sanctuary unlike any other; Thapom water canal. A blend of fresh mineral water that seeps out from the depths of a rich blue pond. Flowing outwards to the ocean, mixing itself with the warm salty waters of the ocean as they ebb and flow through the mangrove forests. The national park is located approximately 30 minutes by motorbike from downtown Ao Nang. It is a popular destination among the locals which live close to the park’s entrance. It intends to expand its facilities in the next few years.

48

www.krabi-magazine.com

Thapom water canal is an interesting phenomenon – fresh mineral water springs up the middle of a dense jungle collecting in a deep blue pool where trees have fallen creating a truly beautiful sight. The overflowing water for this rich blue pool gurgles out over a line of limestone rocks and eventually opens up into a small canal. As the canal gets closer to the ocean, its riders allowing for the incoming salt water ebbing and flowing with the tide to flow freely into the canal. The mangrove forests that thrive on brackish water have crept inland following this tract of crystal clear freshwater surrounding both banks of the canal. The water has been flowing here for thousands of years and over time has crawled its way out into the open ocean. How the salt and fresh water blend together is what makes this space most special. Typically, when freshwater and saltwater come into contact with one another, they naturally mix together and become brackish (sea water with a lower concentration of salt). But due to the density or possibly some mineral content in the freshwater, when the saltwater and freshwater at Thapom water canal come into contact they form two distinct layers, each keeping their original properties. The saltwater remains below while the freshwater stays on top. This unique phenomenon is called stratification and can be seen in other places in the world, but in Krabi, this is the only known location where you can observe the phenomenon of saltwater and freshwater fish swimming side by side.

June | 2016

49

Most of the crystal clean freshwater emanating from the earth is off limits to swim in, but closer to the point where the saltwater is in high concentration, swimming is allowed. A number of locals come down to this wonderful refreshing water to cool off from the heat of the day. The pathways leading throughout Thapom water canal takes you through primary jungle where a number of reptiles, birds, mammals, and fish live, making it a great place for nature lovers. Some of the snakes in the area can be a bit dangerous, but will rarely bite – just don’t venture into the jungle unsupervised. Thapom is a great place to visit by motorbike as it is relatively close to Ao Nang, difficult to get lost, and will take you through some breathtaking viewpoints throughout the countryside. Outside the park entrance area, there are a number of restaurants that cook a range of dishes and serve them daily from 10am-6pm.

The new Illumanorah show by PAKA is shining bright into the night. After 3 years of rigorous planning and marketing, the PAKA Showpark has finally opened its doors with the first breathtaking performance this past March titled ‘The Illumanorah. The theatre is outfitted with hundreds of multi-colored lights, fog machines, lasers and a number of other visual effect tools making it a truly amazing show to witness.

52

www.krabi-magazine.com

Located on Pekasam road (about 30 minutes from downtown Ao Nang), it is easily accessible by motorbike or car, but if you feel like taking full advantage of the PAKA SHOW PARK amenities, you may call the operator at: 095-095-5650 to arrange a free van trip. The Illumanorah show is not all there is to keep you and your family busy at The PAKA SHOWPARK. There is also a shopping area featuring both locally made unique handicrafts as well as a variety of goods imported from Bangkok. There is also a full buffet offering a number of traditional Thai dishes, drinks and desserts. The performers you see prancing, jumping and twirling through the air are all from Krabi, but without a true performing arts theatre or school, there are few options for this group to learn and develop their skills as performing artists. The PAKA SHOWPARK enlisted a team of choreographers from Bangkok to train the more than 30 performers. The Illumanorah features a range of acrobatics and visual arts and over 30 cast members. It tells the story of a young girl as she ventures to the south of Thailand. During her travels, she meets a group of locals, who give her a magical crown or “Manohra. Once she dons the crown, she is whisked into a magical world inspired by her imagination. On this new (inner) adventure, she is introduced to the god of the ocean called the Naga. While with the Naga she meets hundreds of Tiger fish, sea flowers, giant jellyfish, and glowing sea insects which interact with her Manohra, illuminating it and brightening the stage. After her adventure with the ocean and all its beauty, she closes her eyes and is transported to the Himmapan forest, rich in wildlife and mystery.

In the Himmapan forest, she is surrounded by wild deer, butterflies, birds, and other forest Creatures, all of whom seem to have a sort of reverence for her Manohra, and treat her as the queen of the forest. And so enter the antagonists, a group a hunters who see her infinite beauty and the beauty of the creatures worshiping her, and who decide to capture her and the wondrous forest creatures. They do this with a fervent intensity and cruelty. Hunting the last of the forest creatures, they capturing it with ropes and chains. The once beautiful Himmapan forest is then distorted into a desperate and desolate place. However, rescue is on its way! The Naga (God of the ocean and protector of the land) seeing there to be a gap in the perfect work of the imagination, sets forth to stop the hunters and free the many creatures of Himmapan forest. And so the battle ensues! After an intense fight, the Naga is victorious and the hunters are banished from the forest. The Land is then freed from evil, the girl and fantastical creatures are set free, the girl returns her Manohra, and sent back into the world where she was born. From her experience, she realizes that the Manohra is a sacred piece of the local culture where she visited and should remain there despite its supernatural powers. She then continues her journey as a tourist. The story that is told during the show is a true and accurate one. Not only is it a fantastic performance given by the many talented cast member, it has a message that can be taken to heart. The PAKA SHOWPARK was built in 2015 but the planning for such a performance has been underway for the past 3 years. But that is not all‌ What you see at a PAKA SHOWPARK is only the beginning of what is to come. There are big plans for the future such as a large outdoor amphitheater, and an even larger outdoor shopping area. So take in the greatness that The PAKA SHOWPARK has to offer but brace yourself for what is to come. It will truly be an experience to remember.

SIAM CONTEMPORARY ART SOUVENIRS WITH A MEANING Siam Contemporary Art was founded seven years ago by a young Thai woman from Chiang Mai who wanted to bring the crafts and creations of her hometown to Koh Lanta. Koh Lanta before Siam Contemporary Art was opened had nothing available in terms of Chiang Mai products.

O

riginally from Chiang Ma,i Khun Pomee has strong roots in a land full of world class carpenters and wood carvers. Chiang Mai is still rich in mahogany, takien and other strong hardwood trees, offering a great canvas for all kinds of artisanal wood work. Chiang Mai style furniture and architecture is dramatically different from the more basic and simple style of construction and design we find throughout Krabi and Southern Thailand. The style you see prevalent throughout Northern Thailand is reminiscent of a more traditional Thailand we all know from the books and movies; it is called “Lanna style.” The tall vaulted roofs curving upwards to the heavens ending in a dramatic wooden point, the large wooden doors, the carved wooden molding covering floor-wall joints – these are only some of the many common items you can find from Chiang Mai. Table top wood carved items can be seen everywhere and frequently, entire homes are made from locally collected forest hardwood. The local style for Krabi (and southern Thailand) has taken on a new feeling. Some of this is due to the lack of hard wood trees as opposed to rubber and palm trees. Wooden homes have been replaced with concrete ones. But that doesn’t mean the inside of your home or room is comprised of only concrete. Siam Contemporary Art offers a range of items from wooden statues of Buddha, picture frames, floor statues, and much more. Come browse their numerous items on display and find something that would complement your house or home. The items found in Siam Contemporary Art can be placed on tables, stands, hung on walls, and much more. Some items are so large that they can be left alone free standing on floors or staircases.

“There is alway something to compliment you’re house or home” Open daily Monday - Friday 09:00 - 17:00 their shops owner and main importer Khun Pomee is always available to help you find the perfect item. THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

B

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks, and guest houses that cater to newcomers. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast – hence it’s often referred to as “The Sunset Island” – and can be reached by road. Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao, and Phra Ae have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin, and Ba Kan Tiang, and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and are less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal-clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.

64

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

unplug in KOH JUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?

We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth

70

weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here.

While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the

island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.

Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help. We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers. There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh www.krabi-magazine.com

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.

WHAT DOES the term “ RAI “ MEAN ? A rai is a unit of area, equal to 1 square sen or 1,600 square metres (40 m × 40 m), and is used in measuring land area for a cadastre or cadastral map. Its current size is precisely derived from the metre. The rai equals 4 Ngaan or 400 Tarangwa a.k.a. square wa. Usually used in Thailand, the Rai, the Wah, the Ngaan and the Tarangwa are recognized by the International System. Converting Rai and Wah can be complex and can create legal issues when people do not understand what it is that they are signing at the contract stage. Ensure that you understand what you are buying and how best to deal with this. These are the basics for land conversion in the land measurement system in Thailand. Thailand does not have an Imperial or Metric system. -1 sq. wah = 4 sq. m. 1 acre = 2.471 rai or 43,560 sq. ft. -1 ngan = 100 wah (or 400 sq. m.) 1 hectare = 6.25 rai or 10,000 sq. m. -1 Rai = 4 Ngan (or 1600 sq. m.)
