For the village, the new pier provides much improved facilities for its own fishing industry, on which it depends, as well as an opportunity to sell local OTOP products to our guests, who can, in turn, experience for themselves a typical Thai village life style. This restoration follows on from previous projects at Baan Rar Mard that included providing the village school with new computers, renovating the school’s nursing room and planting over 1 rai of land with coconuts to provide future income for the community. The story of Baan Rar Mard is at the core of a new ‘welcome’ video we have just completed, a 30 minute ‘tour’ around some of Koh Lanta's attractions, that will entertain our guests on the journey down from Krabi International Airport. Hello 2017! It’s a new year in paradise and we’re glad you decided to spend it in our little gem of a province, Krabi. January is a special time of the year, it’s the month when we all look back on last year, think of our regrets, our faults and the things we wish we had done and say this is the year when things will change, this is going to be the start of a new me. Well we can always talk about the changes we’ll make in our life, about the things we’ve wished we’d done and how we’re going to do but lets do the opposite for a minute. No matter what we do in a year a lot changes for all of us, things have been accomplished, hurdles have been overcome (even if they are small hurdles), friends made and new places seen. We’ve all come a long way this past year and it’s important we all acknowledge this, we’re all growing and getting better and better. We are Krabi Magazine are excited about this upcoming year but are very grateful for this past year. We’ve made some mistakes and have learned from them and are stronger for it. We hope you enjoy your time in Krabi province, it’s a magical wonderful place in southern Thailand, for the beaches, karsts and quaint little villages which dot the province, it’s a unique place in Thailand. AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..

TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by.
KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay.

KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach.
KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

KING RAMA X MAKES HIS FIRST OFFICIAL VISIT TO KRABI His Majesty Maha vajiralongkorn will preside over opening of new provincial hall today tens of Thousands expected to line up |to catch glimpse of the new monarch. THE SOUTHERN resort province of Krabi will for the first time in several decades host a Royal, as King Maha Vajiralongkorn graciously presides over the opening of its new provincial hall today. Tens of thousands of people are also expected to show up to witness the historic event. King Rama X, who ascended the throne on October 13, will be welcomed by Krabi residents waiting along the streets leading to the provincial hall from the airport. Krabi Governor Boompinit Boonlert said yesterday the venue was ready to welcome the new King, adding that some 36,000 are expected to visit Krabi to catch sight of the monarch. Residents from nearby southern provinces are also expected to join Krabi residents in greeting him, Krabi’s mayor Kiratisak Pukaoluan said. Kiratisak said His Majesty King

Bhumbol Adulyadej last visited Krabi in 1973, so Krabi was proud to be the first province to welcome the new monarch. “It has been many decades since Krabi last had the opportunity to receive the monarch, so people are excited and getting ready to welcome the new King,” the mayor said. The late King Bhumibol visited Krabi three times during his reign in 1959, 1970 and 1973. “The monarch represents the country’s spiritual well-being and is also one of the country’s three key institutions, so we are all aware of the Royal graciousness. We’ve pledged allegiance to King Rama X and to be good humans,” he said. Local authorities and residents have taken measures to ensure that Krabi is clean, orderly and secure ahead of the Royal visit, which has also attracted the attention of many foreign tourists visiting the province. Duan Damdee, president of Krabi’s Council of Culture, said: “Everyone, from government officials to people from all walks of life, are excited about welcoming the new monarch.”
Boonpinit Boonlert, the Krabi provincial governor, said the provincial hall’s opening ceremony would take place at 3pm today, so military and security personnel had to ensure that the venue was safe. Construction of the provincial hall, which cost Bt113 million, began in 2008 and was completed in 2014. The building is five-storeys high, 28 metres wide and 72 metres long. Many local government offices are now located in the building, which replaced the old site built in 1872. In the 19th century, King Rama V upgraded Kwaeng Pakasai into a new province called Krabi with the first provincial hall situated at Baan Talad Kao. In 1900, the offices were relocated to the last site at Muang district’s Tambon Pak Nam. At the opening ceremony, the monarch will be welcomed with a rendition of the Royal Anthem played by the Ammat Panichnukul School orchestra. The Nation

National Legislative Assembly (NLA) last month passed a bill which will limit the freedom and accessibility for internet use in Thailand. There is much controversy over this bill, primarily by the TNN (The Thai Netizen Network) founder Sarinee Achavaknuntakul, who submitted a petition signed by over 300,000 people petitioning to delay the bill until many of it’s clauses have been cleared up and explained clearly. There is much in the dark with the bill and it does give significant oversight for the government to block websites they feel are dangerous to national security. you can see the full bill here: http://itserv.ait.ac.th the concern is that with many of the bill clauses lacking clarity there is significant room for abuse and corruption if the government is given full control over when and where to implement bans and blocks on the internet. One area of concern over the bill is it’s screening panel. This panel will be made up of only 5 members whose responsibility will be strictly determining whether various content found online is acceptable or ‘a breach of public morals’. If it is breach of public morals the panel needs not seek higher approval from a court they will be given total power to shut down websites. The TNN will continue to petition the bill and call for appeals until the bill is reviewed and changed.

During your holiday will you be... Naughty or Nice? No matter
what country you call your homeland holiday's can be quiet a challenge when you think about all the eating you will be doing for the next month or so or may have already begun. Friends and family will gather in small groups, large groups, corporate events to celebrate the holidays. Needless to say during theses socials there will be lots and lots of food and drink. The time of year when we like to pull out the stops and go for it. Losing ourselves into a wanderlust of over indulgence. When we go away from home to spend a holiday abroad such as that likened to an exotic journey to amazing Thailand. Will we choose to lose all sense of control and abandon ourselves to a frenzy of food both familiar and not? Why not, for goodness sake, you only live once and you've found yourself seated in one of the most sought after travel destinations in the world; Krabi, Thailand. Now let's not get our stockings in a bind with self condemnation because there's a way to do a little of both and not feel as if you need to find a confessional booth afterward to make amends for such unbridled behavior.

When it comes to personal health care and well-being during the holiday's you need to take a broader approach at how you look at this festive time of the year. Statistics show that healthy people tend to be happy people, more upbeat and a pleasure to be around. They make better decisions, have healthier relationships and play a more positive role in society overall. When it comes to their food choices during the holiday's, they do tend to make healthier food choices as to what they will or will not indulge in. What healthy choices? They simply choose foods that are good for them. However, there's a twist to this. Healthy people also cut themselves some slack during the holiday season. They may partake in pleasures that for many or the norm. You may see these healthy souls downing holiday treats like homemade fudge, cookies, cakes, pies, baked hams and turkeys, breaded stuffing,
creamy gravy, bread rolls, drinking wine and spirits. All of these temptations filled with plenty of saturated fat, sugar, dairy, gluten, salt and many ladened with preservatives. These people know that heathy eating is not about starving yourself or eating food that tastes horrible just because they know it's good for them; no way! They have learned that eating healthy is a process and learning to use self control as well as educating ones self about what truth health is really all about. They grace themselves in the understanding that in all reality they are going to be sitting around these tables filled with foods found in fairytale movies like Charlie and Chocolate Factory for only a few weeks and not everyday during the holiday season. They know their limits and are ready for celebration; plain and simple. To help you during this holiday season I've provide a few rich and sweet suggestions to aid you along during your time of festivity; enjoy.

What ever you do; don't starve yourself of food during the day in order that you can overindulge in the fanfare of the evening. This is a horrible misconception and can be bad for your health in the long-run. Even short term you will find yourself feeling very uncomfortable for a few hours after pounding down all of that rich food and drink. Too, the benefit of eating a couple of small healthy meals before the 'feast' will help you enter into the occasion not having a desire to satiate yourself by engorging your body with too much food at one time.

Take your time and don't be afraid to graze. Eating slowly and consistently on small portions throughout your holiday event will have you eating less overall. Too, you will not feel as run down, weighed down and lethargic after the meal.

cave In a different life Ajarn Etetait was a man who went to work, school, and hung out with friends. He was an ordinary man some would say. A man who was going through the steps of life on his own, playing by the rules and living according to the way society thought it fit. Always holding a certain artistic character in his heart but where to let out this part of his soul?

After school and following a strict adherence to playing by the rules, he decided to break the mold, to become one closer to a higher powers and living a life of simplicity. He did this by joining the Sati monk-hood. Living a life of simplicity in Bangkok he followed the sacred monk lifestyle and found great solace and serenity. Although his life still felt unsettled. He felt a desire to be with nature and away from the numerous people of Bangkok pursuing an internet power to be alone and free of worry and stress. He did this by leaving Bangkok, and moving to Krabi province. His fascination with a connection to his inner self, and a want to better understand the world around him led him to develop a close connection with Buddhism. In Thailand every male is encouraged to join a monkshood for at least a period of a few months, to spend time among those less fortunate, learn form them and grow as an individual. During his time in the monk hood Ajarn Etetait found his calling. A compete and utter devotion to a power beyond him, a connection he could nurture, cherish and learn from. His time at the temple also allowed for him to dedicate time to his inner artist, time to paint, sculpt, shape and alter what he saw around him in order to create a perfect harmony.
Ajarn Etetait seems to have this unique ability to channel godly powers through his body, to alter the world around him as he allows for this unseen power to come through him and release a wave of creativity and vigor pushing him to create. Often during these channeling he is given the will to create tattoos, to create beauty on ones skin. These tattoo’s come in a range of styles and imagery ranging from images of buddha to dragons and other animals. These moments when he is given the strength and power to create a tattoo are rare but do occur time to time, the recipient on them he is to work is chosen by the power which channels through him, and these tattoos are seen as a blessing by the local’s around his home. After coming to Krabi sometime ago Ajarn Etetait found solace at the steps of the backside of Klang cave located just outside the greater Ao Nang area in Ao Luk. Klang Cave has started to gain recognition from the surrounding areas (Ao Nang and Phuket primarily) as a cave with deep water and perfect for underwater exploration as well as just general spelunking around in the dark with one of the local guides. “EMOTIONS SUCH AS FEAR, ANGER, HAPPINESS AND TRANQUILITY ARE FELT THE SAME BY ALL LIVING BEINGS� - AJARN ETETAIT Ajarn Etetait chose the backside of Klang Cave because when he was walking in the forest one day he saw the opening to a cavern like area but the cavernous holes was filled to the brim with water and inaccessible (or so he thought). After spending more time in the area he felt a connection with the backside of Klang cave more and more, a burning desire he could feel flowing through him to create a center of worship for those wishing to spend time with him and develop this cave as an area of worship. The most fascinating part to Ajarn Etetait story is that the building process for him is driven yet again by this massive power, this drive, the rush and inspiration channeled through him by this higher power. When a channel comes to him, his body and mind are sent into a trance like state, when he returns an overwhelming sense of inspiration comes over him, again the desire to create and build. This is how he has build this amazing temple are nearly by himself, through an out of body power and inspiration. We got the chance to explore some of the immense cave which Ajarn Etetait has chosen to build his temple and start his new life in. The saves are deep, stretching over 2 kilometers in length and that is just what has been mapped, so there is a lot more to explore and see. With limited time we were not able to make it so far into the depths of the caves but in future trips we plan to make a further trip. Ajarn Etetait is a practicing vegan who recommends all hose living on this planet try to enjoy a harmonious and balanced life. This is the first of many trips to the sacred Wat Tam Klang temple, stay tuned to future stories emerging from the dark caverns. Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us. If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish).

There are many soft and hard corals that grow underwater and provide small cracks and crevices for fish and small crustaceans to hide in. If you have the breath in you and have the desire, you can head out on a snorkeling expedition and dive in to see what you can find!

Just beyond the mountain. Ao Thalane Bay, a little getaway a lot closer than you think
Ao Nang, Klong Muang and Krabi town are all great places to explore, they offer you a number of beaches, restaurants and outlets to see and discover. They are also the main destinations for 90% of the travelers to the area meaning there will usually be another few (or more) people wherever you go to visit. If you looking to explore a region of Krabi where you are almost guaranteed to be alone and get to explore another side of the life of Krabi Ao Thalane bay might just be your new hotspot. Located a short 15 kilometer jaunt from greater Ao Nang, it’s an easy place to visit by motorbike, car or taxi. Although there is no public bus

service which offers government subsidized trips to Ao Thalane bay it’s easy enough to visit no your own. Motorbikes can be rented for as little as 200THB/day and taxi’s will generally charge 500THB/way. So you’re in luck it’s cheap and easy to get there. Ao Thalane bay is nestled just behind a number of mountains separating it from it’s neighbor Along Muang making it the next stop up the coast heading into Phang Nga bay. Ao Thalane bay is popular for photographers, nature seekers and of course people who love to explore and get lost. The area has only one main road connecting the region like a winding serpentine. There are numerous small side streets which shoot off form the main road in all directions. Some of these side streets lead to a depilated village, others lead to a unique fishing pier where you can hire a local boat driver to take you up stream where other have rarely gone. www.krabi-magazine.com
There are a number of shrimp farms which dot the region, they are one of the main livelihoods for locals here. Off the shoreline you can see a number of poles protruding off towards deeper water, don’t overlook these poles for they are one of the things which makes this region special. For under the murky waters lays a network of finally woven fishing nets which can sometimes extend for over 100 meters. These nets work with the natural tidal shifts of the region, they allow for fish to come into the shallower waters during high tide, then when the tide recedes back to the horizon they fish follow in it’s wake but must make it past these massive fishing traps. Therefore you can see doing low tide these shallow muddy tidal areas are full of local fisherman looking for the nights dinner. The end of the main road ends at a pier, from this pier you can simple rent a kayak from one of the kayak rental agencies and head out to venture into the many tributaries which cut through the area. the highlights for the region, for on kayaks you can see such a range of plants and animals, monkeys dance among the mangrove trees, mud skippers jump in and out of the shallowest waters and under the surface thousands of different fish species fight for a place in the mangrove roots protection. These mangrove forests area essential for the local ecosystem offering safe breeding grounds for numerous fish species while also removeing mush of the water toxins. The end of the road is also where the regions pier is located. From this pier you can catch a long tail to the one of the better islands in the region Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yai Noi, both of them are sister islands and offer a different side of life. Isolated and calm, these islands offer a slow pace of life, stunning uninhabited beaches and simple local restaurants. Surrounded by neck wrenching towering mountains Ao Thalane bay offers you a new type of day, and it’s a lot closer than you think. So what are you waiting for, just on your bike or in your car and get going. You can get to Ao Thalane bay by following route 4 and then when you come to a junction taking you to either Phuket or Ao Thalane bay, take the turn for Ao Thalane bay and you cannot get lost.

Thailand - the country of smiles, full of beautiful nature with plenty of clean ocean and delicious food. Today we will talk about how to build a house in amazing Thailand. To do this, we met with Michael, the founder of Aonanta pool villas, a completely new project located on the outskirts of Ao Nang. Aonanta pool villas are a group of luxury villas each with their own private pool and plenty of garden space foe guests to lounge and relax in.

Aleska: Michael, why did you choose Krabi to come and built your pool villas? Michael: Krabi is a beautiful province, with unique nature, many caves and dramatic limestone karts, white sand beaches and emerald green jungles, it just seemed like the perfect place to settle down in. Krabi is also a transit point for surrounding destinations; you can get from here to anywhere in Thailand rather easily. a great advantage is that there is an international airport which welcomes direct flights from around the globe. Yet Krabi is still young in it’s development and every year it is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination tor travelers from around the world. Aleska: Tell us how you began the construction phase? Michael: You must first find the land where you are going to build your house or villas. To this end, in Krabi has several real estate agencies that are engaged in renting and selling land. I choose TEN Companie, Nico the sales manager has lived in Krabi for many years and has been selling property for a long time. Thanks to him, we found a great piece of land not far from Ao Nang beach, in quiet area sporting stunning mountain views. Aleska: Each country has its own laws and regulations on the sale of land and building restrictions. Tell us what you need to know before starting the construction in Thailand? Michael: First of all you must remember that to buy land in the property, if you are not a resident of the country is impossible. But there are land ownership solutions for foreigners, such as the conclusion of the lease land for a period of

30 years with the subsequent extension of the lease on the 30 and 30 years (maximum rental period - 90 years), or the purchase of land in the ownership of the resident Thai company. Aleska: Tell us about your project? Michael: Aonanta pool villas is essentially several luxury villas, each with it’s own private pool, fully equipped with furniture, a spacious kitchen and the necessary equipment for comfortable accommodation. The idea behind Aonanta pool villas was so that guests would feel at home during their stay. The main objective was to combine the necessity of comfort for a medium to large family with all the modern ammenities while keeping the villas feeling like they were a home away from home. In Phuket and Koh Samui there is a high concentration of villas, ranging in size and price. As opposed to Ao Nang where the number of high end luxury spacious pool villas is rather small and more exclusive. Our main product private villa with swimming pool, large grounds and a barbecue area. Each villa is designed so thats guests can come and enjoy the space as a large family or as be as private as they wish. Each villas has two bedrooms which are located on different floors and have each have their own separate entrance. GOODBYE 2016, Another year come and gone, another page turned, lets take a look at what happened last year
It’s that time again, we’re onto another year in paradise, time to say goodbye to the past and hello to the new. 2016 was an interesting year, ushering in a new era for Thailand with the passing of King Bhumipol and the ascension of his son Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. U.S. astronauts have been bumming rides to space from Russia for more than three years. Soon they won’t need to. This year, SpaceX unveiled one of the first privately developed manned spacecraft. A few months later, NASA officially selected Dragon Version 2, along with Boeing’s CST-100, as the nation’s new taxi to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX emphasized both safety and efficiency in Dragon’s design. Most spacecraft, including the Soyuz capsules that currently ferry astronauts, rely on parachutes to slow their reentry speed, which makes for a rough landing. SpaceX gave Dragon Version 2 a propulsive landing system instead. This technology should be gentler, to protect delicate instruments, and more accurate, to deliver the craft’s seven passengers with the precision of a helicopter. Dragon can also be prepped for relaunch in weeks, dramatically reducing mission turnaround time and potentially saving millions of dollars. Solar Roadways has taken the first step to creating the world’s largest solar panel: The company uses tempered glass and photovoltaic cells to create intelligent, energy-harvesting pavement, complete with built-in heating elements for melting ice and LEDs for signage. Last October Thailand's beloved King Bhimipol passed away, he was the worlds longest reigning monarch and was loved by Thai people throughout the kingdom, his passing was met with a year long period of mourning by Thai people throughout the kingdom. With the passing of a king, comes his successor, most times it is his son. For King Bhumipol it was his son Maha Vajiralongkorn. Maha Vajiralongkorn took his seat in the annuls of Thai history as the 10th king of Thailand on November 12th 2016 taking his seat among the legends of his country and we all wait eagerly to see and understand how he will guide this great and diverse land. Soon after his coronation Maha Vajiralongkorn announced his planned trip throughout the kingdom to meet with various town and city officials, open new municipal buildings, schools and oversee various infrastructure projects. On December 9th Maha Vajiralongkorn came to Krabi town to open the new city hall. It was a great and historic day for locals and tourists alike. A day marked with numerous military police officers, black tinted Mercedes Benz, government officials adorned in pearly white uniforms and of course thousands of spectators looking to catch a glimpse of the newly crowned king.

On the outskirts of Krabitown, just beyond the main junction of Talad Gao and the first settlement of Krabi lies a national park so vast and encompassing that it actually extends well beyond the boarders of Krabi Province.

trifle difficult to find but well worth the time as this place has not become the target of the mass tours provided by a number of the local operators, keeping it remote and just under the radar. To get to Huay Thoi waterfall you need to rent a motorbike, car or hire a took took to take you there. Take the main road going from Ao Nang to Krabitown, at the first major four way intersection with a light you come to turn left, continue on until you come to your net light, turn right and go straight until you come to a major 5 way intersection at the bottom of a hill. Stay straight but bear left through this light and then keep your speedometer around 40km/hr so you will be able to see the approaching sign on your left. Once you see it (HUAY THOI WATERFALL with an arrow to the left) turn left and stay on straight. Not is the slightly hard part… This road which will take you to Huay Thoi Waterfall is long, and after driving for around 20 minutes without seeing your destination you might get a little distraught, don’t fear young explorer, continue on, persevere the potholes and manic motorbikes, white knuckle the wheel and continue on until you see your destination poke out from the forested depths of the National Park. A cheap 200thb/person entrance will be asked of you upon entrance, we have tried to flirt our way out of this to no avail, so you can try but you probably will have little luck… I suggest you bring your camera and possibly a picnic if you can as the main area of the national park is a grassy field with various banyan and large contorted huge trees extend overhead and create a blanket like canopy. This is a perfect location for photos of you and your friends, as the backdrop is vibrant, dynamic and not overly populated. The main waterfall which is the primary destination of 90% of the visitors is just a 10 minute walk on a comfortable dirt road surrounded by primary forest and all the dwellers inside. Keep your yes open for tree frogs, butterflies, and beautiful songbirds whose calls can be heard echoing through the dense jungle, the chance remains to spot a forest tapir or spotted cat, although rare they do inhabit these habitat. The waterfall you emerge through the canopy cover to is the last tier of a 7 tiered waterfall system, it’s source is well up into the mountains, possible to trek to but not recommended. Water begins from the mountainside from rainfall which collects in the various pits and streams of the hillside in small bodies of water these smaller bodies merge and create larger and larger streams until they converge into the main body and cascade down from onto our heads from above. Huay Thoi waterfall is part of the Khao Panom Bench National park, a park founded as a means to maintain some of Thailand’s true national land, instead of allowing it to be slashed and burned, turning it into just another part of the monogamous landscape of rubber and palm plantations. THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks, and guest houses that cater to newcomers. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast – hence it’s often referred to as “The Sunset Island” – and can be reached by road. Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao, and Phra Ae have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin, and Ba Kan Tiang, and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and are less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal-clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

unplug in KOH JUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?
We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth

weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here.
While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the
island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.
Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help. We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers.
There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.
