AO NANG BEACH

TUBKAEK BEACH

KOH LANTA

at 20km from Krabi Town is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches; a long stretch of white sand with limestone karsts as a backdrop. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs are found here. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat.

Another real place to hide away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

the developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset viewing spots , heaps of activities, and glimpses into sea gypsy life, is where you will meet nature and tradition. It’s also a National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok.

NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH

KOH PODA

just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and on weekends with picnics. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach.

This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you seem from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters.

KLONG MUANG BEACH is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known the world over for their majestic climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15-minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or cliff jumping course (yes, into the sea!), hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out.

CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Chicken) you can catch a glimpse of a chickens neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. You know those postcards with people walking on a sandy isthmus that connects to another island? Yep, here the second island is Koh Tub and is only accessible at low tide. THE KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlight of Krabi province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many a hidden caves and lagoons make it perfect for snorkeling and exploration. Make sure you stop at Lading island after Koh Hong as it is much less visited and sports a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters.

have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. February 2015

or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools that you can swim in. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species.

KOH PHI PHI

SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL

Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming “The beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay.

is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 3040C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle.

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA KOH LANTA BEACHES

LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS

Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace, and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.

Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis that melt away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

PHANG-NGA REGATTA COMING BACK

CLEANING UP KRABI

This March will see the arrival of the renowned Phang-Nga bay regatta and all it’s glory. Originally in it’s burgeoning years the regatta was given the name “The party regatta” due to the participants it attracted. Since it’s inception over a decade ago the regatta has morphed into a well rounded organization of individuals coming from a number of local and distant countries to participate in some of the premier sailing in the world. The event is scheduled to start this upcoming March 4th and will continue for 4 days where yachts will have the chance to dance in-between the various karsts erupting from the bay waters. “We are delighted that we have received such a fantastic response to the change of dates to the first week of March,” said Race Director Simon James of sailing-event organizer Regattas Asia. “In addition, the change of dates should mean that more charter yachts will be available to join as we see this division developing.” This year’s program will begin with registration and the opening party at The Chandara Resort & Spa at Ao Por, on Phuket’s east coast. The first-night party will be held at The Paradise Koh Yao, then the regatta moves across the bay for the second-night stopover at a venue yet to be announced, followed by a race to Tonsai Bay on Phi Phi Island for the third-night party stopover at the Arayaburi Resort. The final day sees the traditional race back across the bay to Phuket for the prize-giving ceremony and final-night party at the O2 Beach Club in Chalong. Online entries opened on January 14, and the Notice of Race, including the conditions and rules for entry, and the handicap scoring system explained, is available online.

WONDERS OF KR ABI

TIGER CAVE TEMPLE

A 1,237-step climb to astounding views, the hike is a mixed bag of emotions: exhaustion, exhilaration, and bewilderment. The hilltop temple is worth the effort for the 360 view of the surrounding countryside laden with swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rains. Although there are no actual tigers at the temple, there is monkey business (hold on to your cameras!). Visit the temple at the bottom, built into a cave, and for a small donation receive a blessing and a special magical bracelet from a resident monk or nun, sure to secure prosperity and health.Â

MARKETS

Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets everyday of the week, day or night, food or fun. Krabi Town boasts the largest covered market in southern Thailand. A visit to any of these is a real glimpse into local life and a chance to shop for something unique.

NAK HILL NATURE TRAIL

At the end of the road in Tub Kaek is a well-shaded hike up to yet another remarkable viewpoint of Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara beaches, and Ao Thalane Bay. For the decently fit, the ascent should take about two hours and is a wonderful exploration off the beaten path. Find the potato chip looking perch at the top and you’ve found your next profile pic.

Rent a motorbike and enjoy a highly scenic drive through local villages to Tha Pom Klong Song Nam, where freshwater and seawater from nearby mangrove forests meet. Walk through the nature preserve and admire the beautiful blue water and maze of mangrove, and end it with a cool dip in the natural pool at the end. Rarely visited by tourists, its quiet and uncrowded, save for the few local families cooling off from the sweltering heat.

Heart Healthy V

alentine’s Day is celebrated throughout the world as the day of love, an auspicious day when we acknowledge that one special person. Lovers in celebration reflecting on how they were swept of their feet, head over heels in love. Maybe you’re courting and will use this day to pull out all the stops to capture the heart of the one you have eyes for. Families celebrate this day as well. Parents to children, children to parents-grandparents, siblings and friends use this day to boast and bless these precious souls with whom we’ve exchanged our hearts with. We are giving our hearts away and we also are holding precious souls within them. Yet, how healthy are these hearts of ours? Are they strong and healthy enough to do all of this giving and receiving?

Over the last few decades throughout the globe, heart disease has been rated at the top of the charts for early death. Illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, lack of exercise, poor diet, smoking, high cholesterol and a slew of other hosts aid in bringing on cardiovascular disease. Sudden death or physical trauma come quickly to many; often times without warning. One of the most common diseases, Arteriosclerosis, happens when a substance known as plaque builds up, over time, in the walls of the arteries. As the plaque continues to build up within the arteries, they begin to narrow. This will make it difficult for blood carrying vital properties to flow freely, increasing the risk for heart attack and stroke. There are other factors that can lead to an unhealthy heart, such as birth defects, an irregular heartbeat, coronary artery disease, heart valve issues or arrhythmia. So let’s take a look at what we can do to keep every beat of our heart healthy and happy. A healthy heart is, after all, a muscular organ. It acts as a pump for the body’s circulatory system, taking deoxygenated blood through the veins and delivering it to the lungs for oxygenation and then pumping it into the various arteries. This proper blood flow will allow oxygen and nutrients to be dispersed to every cell and organ throughout the entire body. So what can we do to the muscle we call “The Heart”? Knowing these seven disease-causing steps can help you gain and maintain a hearthealthy lifestyle. Take a look; your heart will thank you.

“We are giving

our hearts away and we also are holding precious souls within them”

1.Deep breathing Many times overlooked; deep breathing is a vital component to bringing oxygen throughout your entire body and bloodstream. Oxygen-rich blood helps to aid in heart function.

1.Avoid smoke of any sort Rich, pure air is essential to overall health and especially heart health. Nicotine, carbon monoxide, methane fumes, aerosol sprays and other toxins decrease pure oxygen. These chemicals can damage your blood vessels and heart. Your blood pressure may increase as well as your heart rate as it will need to work harder to supply the heart with ample oxygen.

1.De-Stress Many are not aware that stress can lead directly to heart damage, why? Stress is an issue of the heart; the center of our emotions. When faced with stress do you lose your cool or do you go in to ‘resolve mode’? When faced with stress we may turn to comfort foods, smoking, drinking and other vices. Over time these ‘go to’s can do damage to the heart. When challenged with stress begin to have those inner voice conversations, share with friends and family the circumstance that you are up against. You are never alone.

1.Eat nutrient dense foods A healthy diet is great for your overall health; even heart health. Nutrient dense foods such as fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains help protect the heart. Eating fish in moderation can reduce your risk of heart disease. Beans also provide a great source of low-fat protein. Avoid eating saturated fat and trans fat found in foods like chips, crackers, deep fried-fast food, pie crust, dairy products, red meat, pancake and cake mix, cookies and nondairy creamer.

1.Exercise Remember the heart is a muscle organ. To benefit the heart muscle, we need to exercise it with physical activity. Get at least 30-60 minutes of moderately intense physical activity 4-6 days a week. It does not matter what you do, just do something physical that increases your heart rate. After intense exercise always allow for an additional 5-10 minutes of low impact-low intensity activity in order for the heart rate to return to normal. Exercise benefits the entire body and keeps a heart healthy and happy.

1.Drink alcohol in moderation It’s no surprise that alcohol consumption should always be done in moderation. To drink a beer or a glass of wine on occasion can actually help with digestion. Red wine in particular helps to thin the blood which reduces the risk of blood clotting while also increasing your HDL, ‘good’ cholesterol. Having a drink 1-2 times a week will suffice as well as keeping you from becoming addicted, Cheers!

1.Meditate Stress is your body’s alarm system releasing adrenaline, which in turn asks for a ‘fight or flight’ response. Your heart rate and blood pressure will begin to rise and if left unaddressed over time will take a toll on your heart and body. Mediation can reduce blood pressure and heart rate. Tension and fatigue dissipate as the heart receives a quiet message to relax. Meditation is not difficult to learn; it just takes practice. Over time you will be able to get to a place of meditation and relaxation very quickly. Meditation is not always performed sitting on the ground with your legs folded or lying on the floor - there are many ways to meditate. Find something that works for you. Here are a few suggestions.

Bonsai, a Japanese term meaning “planted in a container, is the age-old art form of miniaturizing trees to live and thrive in pots. Although the Japanese have made it worldrenowned, it is an art born not from Japanese soil but Chinese. www.krabi-magazine.com

盆栽

The art

work began as a means to preserve nature in it’s most primal form, to maintain trees as they are idealized to be. The efforts of the art are not only for beauty and aesthetics but also to direct healthy growth and avoid wasted energy, while maintaining the tree’s miniature size. It is an impressive feat to shrink a 20-meter tree into a tiny pot and keep it comfortably inside the living room. This art is vast, and it is possible for anyone interested to create amazing specimens. For over two millennia this art form has been making it’s mark all around the globe. It originated in China around 200 years ago and then migrated to Japan around 1000 years later. Bonsai was originally thought to have been developed by Tibetan monks to harness the power of nature inside of their temples; it has since influenced many outside cultures. February | 2015

The design of Bonsai is to always recreate the natural settings in which trees can be found. Their shapes are tilted, bent, wind-torn or straight and true. Their settings can come in various styles, for instance; many trees all together creating a forest-like appearance, or being split to form “multiple” trunks, and although not entirely common in nature, a tree can be trained to hang down creating a cascading effect. The magic of Bonsai is that, like any art form, there are many ways to do it. There are standard tools and a medium to work with but how you merge the two is up to you. You can create a towering two-meter banyan tree or a tiny 20 cm redwood. Bonsai is also not restricted to a certain variety of tree. Bonsai can be applied to any number of trees, from evergreens to tropical ficus (easiest to start in Thailand) or deciduous trees such as maple or Chinese elm. As Krabi is starting to grow and open it’s doors to new people and new minds, Bonsai seems like a fitting new addition to the

demographics of our little province. Well, we have just that in Mr. Olivier Michaud from France. Mr. Michaud has been a Bonsai expert for over 14 years now has decided that Krabi is the place for him to set his roots (no pun intended). “The conditions here are perfect; the humidity in the air, the amount of natural sunlight and the temperature all allow for Bonsai trees to literally pop up! A 1-meter tree that might take 80 years to grow in Europe or Japan can be grown in Krabi in around 30 years”. Mr. Michaud explains that although bonsai is an art, it is more than that - It is a meditation. A tree grows with it’s owner and every time the owner spends time trimming branches, repotting or watering, they enter into a state of focus - all other worries seem to diminish, fears vanish, and one is left with just their tree, it’s shape, its foliage, it’s color, and nothing else seems to matter. Those who work with bonsai know that the most important thing with Bonsai is something unseen – it’s the feeling one gets when you look at it.

FE ATURE

You will need some other equipment though:

I brew

the beer

i drink.

Large cooking pot Heat source (burner) Large plastic bottle (5L will work, but 20L is better) Airlock to prevent air coning inside bottle Thermometer Scale Timer Coffee grinder Beer bottles Beer caps Beer capper Ice

Ever what to take your favorite beverage into your own hands? Ever want total control over what goes into your glass? Well my friends, this is your lucky issue as we’re going to go into the process and guide you how to make your own beer! This process you’re about the delve into is an ancient one and is arguably one of the main factors in the agricultural revolution that became the first step in setting up civilization as we know it today.

First lets go into what you need to make beer: • Barley or Wheat • Hops • Yeast • Water

Yes, it’s that simple, only those four ingredients are what you need.

26

www.krabi-magazine.com

Steps:

I

•Crush your barley or wheat malt so the inside of the malt is exposed to the environment using a coffee grinder •Add hot water (around 76C) to the malt in a large cooking pot cover and let sit for 1 hour •Strain off the grain from your mixture leaving only the liquid (or wort) in your cooking pot •Bring the wort to a boil •Once the wort begins to boil reduce heat to a simmer and add your hops, (typically the hops are added in small increments multiple times throughout the boiling process). •Continue the boil for 1 hour then turn off heat •Add enough ice to the wort to reduce the temperature enough to pour into the plastic bottle you have on hand •Once the temperature is cool enough pour wort into your plastic bottle then put plastic bottle to an ice bath to cool to 25C •Once temperature is around 25C then you can add the yeast and shake the bottle to aerate •Add airlock to prevent air getting into the bottle but allowing gas to escape. keep the bottle around 20-25C and let ferment for 1-2 weeks. You should notice a little bubbling action happening at the top of your bottle, this is fermentation and a normal healthy part of the process.Fermentation is the process of the yeast consuming sugars converting them to ethanol and CO2 •After 1-2 weeks (or when the bubbling process has stopped completely you want to cold crash your beer so put it in the refrigerator for 1-2 days, this will allow the yeast go to sleep and sink to the bottom of the bottle •After these couple of days add the priming sugar to your beer, mix around slightly and fill your bottles, cap, then put in a cold dark place for another 2 weeks

Please note that Thailand does not allow brewing ones own beer so please take this information to heart if you are considering brewing with the kingdom, we suggest you try this in the safety of your own country.

Crack and Serve!

Take care and happy brewing.

The Lai Thai Luxury Condominiums

The Lai Thai Luxury Condominiums, a new 80-unit condominium/hotel project under development in the heart of Ao Nang, actually has a unique history. Its predecessor, The Lai Thai Resort, the first boutique luxury resort in Krabi, opened in 1996 and was listed in the book “100 Best Resorts of Thailand”.

28

www.krabi-magazine.com

“W

e first came to Krabi in 1991 and fell in love with the beaches, scenery and people” says Robert C. Reynolds, owner and Managing Director of The Lai Thai. “Ao Nang was quite small then, basically just a jungle with wooden structures on the beach front and The Krabi Resort. We bought the land in 1993, and built the Lai Thai Resort with Lanna-Style bungalows. The site has amazing views of the limestone cliffs.” After 16 years of operation, the owners decided that instead of renovating the bungalows, a completely new design was needed to cater to the large family groups coming to Krabi. New units were designed as Studio (40-47m2), One Bedroom (60m2), 2 Bedroom (98122m2) and Penthouse (147-157m2) suites. All of the units come fully furnished with standard western kitchens. February | 2015

The new Lai Thai will be a condominium/hotel; with foreigners able to purchase freehold units, and the Lai Thai will keep a number of units for its own hotel operations. The Lai Thai also offers a Guarantee Rental Income Program of 7% per annum for investors who wish to participate in the growth of Krabi. “ 7% is an attractive return for investors, who are getting substantially lower interest rates on their bank deposits, ” says Reynolds, a former Director of Credit Suisse Bank. The Lai Thai will also offer Retirement Leases - of 5 and 10 years - for those over the age of 50 who don’t want to purchase a unit outright, but want to live in the comfort of a full service residence. Retirees will be happy to know that 24 hour security is provided and there are two medical clinics and ambulance service less than 100 meters from the resort. In keeping with its previous high standards of operations, the project has received EIA approval.

EIA is the Environmental Impact Assessment, which is Thailand’s analysis of resorts and condos offsetting their carbon footprint. Trees, wastewater runoff and other environmental supports are analyzed to assure a lighter environmental impact from these resorts. The resort will also offer a 25-meter lap pool, a children’s pool, a fitness center, massage area, food/beverage and maid/hotel services for guests and owners alike. Located just 700 meters from Ao Nang beachfront, and just steps away from all the restaurants, shops and tourist facilities, the Lai Thai offers a unique combination of central location, privacy and security under Western management.

The

History of Valentine’s Day A

day to celebrate LOVE – what a brilliant concept!!! February 14 is the day that many people in the world celebrate the most powerful thing in existence – Love! As we enjoy this holiday devoted to love – we might wonder why we have a holiday that people everywhere stop and take time to say “I LOVE YOU!” How did such a wonderful concept come about? We are so fortunate to have Valentines Day, but where did it come from? Historically, there is no definite answer to this question, but it appears that the story began in ancient Rome. Emperor Claudius II, who ruled in the 3rd Century AD, was an ambitious Roman leader who sent soldiers away to war for years at a time. Seeing how unhappy these soldiers were about leaving their wives and families for such long periods of time, Claudius decided the solution would be to outlaw marriage.

30

A kind priest named “Father Valentine” defied the emperor and secretly married many young lovers. He was eventually caught, arrested and sentenced to death. In his time in jail, it is said that many of the couples that he had married, would visit him, bringing notes and flowers in gratitude for what he had done. The daughter of his jailer was ill and it is said that Father Valentine healed her and then fell in love with her. On the day of his execution (February 14) he sent her a note and signed it: “From Your Valentine”. In the 5th Century AD, in an effort to Christianize the holiday and to honor the canonized priest, Pope Gelasius officially designated February 14 as St. Valentines Day. The holiday was not generally celebrated however, until the 13th century, and by the 15th century, the tradition of exchanging Valentine greetings began. By the 17th century, the tradition of exchanging cards or letters with those of romantic interest took firm hold. In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers as a request to “unlock my heart.”

n the 1840’s in America, hand-written Valentine cards gave way to a new technology of mass-produced greeting cards. These Valentines Day cards were an instant hit and they have since become a major consumer product. Today, annually in America, more than 1 billion valentine cards are sold, and close to $20 Billion total is spent celebrating the holiday of love. Valentines Day is now one of the biggest consumer holidays in the USA for restaurants, confectioners, florists and even jewelers. Many engagements commence on Valentines Day as well – an average of 6 million couples! It is nice to see how popular Valentines Day has become, and the best thing is the growing worldwide appreciation for expressing love. It is a day for romance yes, but Valentines Day is not only for romantic love. This is a wonderful day to celebrate that ever-powerful force of love, in ALL it’s forms, that truly does make the world go around!

The renowned Ao Nang Cliff Beach Resort with it’s forward-thinking management has now launched a new type of restaurant right here in the center of Ao Nang, open to resort guests and the general public alike.

This is one of our favorites, and will not disappoint anyone looking to try something special. If you are interested in a fusion dish then a blend of eastern Laab salad and western traditional salad might suit you, top it all off with some thick and filling dressing and you’ve got yourself a tasty, healthy meal. The Plaza Buffet also features a wide arrange of deserts from the Thai sweet buns and fruits to the Western traditional cakes and breads, you can try what you’re comfortable with and what you know, but at the same time try something a little more exotic. Then onto to BBQ are where you can see a boat (the restaurant size boat) full of locally caught fresh seafood and marinated pork and chicken. The chefs work over a small flame to ensure the meat it not burned or charred, only cooked tenderly constantly reapplying the marinade to avoid the meat from drying out. As if the evening at the Plaza Buffett could not get more tasty, the Ao Nang Cliff Beach have commissioned local musicians to turn up some music and serenade you at the dinner table. Come and spend and evening at the Plaza Buffet. Reasonably priced and with more then enough food for you and your family, you will find everything you need at the Plaza Buffet. HOLIDAY READS Everyone likes read a good book on holidays, so we take a look at 3 spankingly great reads this month that are perfect for whiling away your lazy days here in Krabi.

INTO THE WILD BY. JON KRAKAUER The book ‘Into the Wild’ is based on a true story of Christopher J McCandless, a well educated and able young man from a good family who chased after his dreams and ambitions. After graduating from Emory University, Chris gave the balance of his education saving account to Oxfam and disappeared from society to live the life of a recluse and venture into territories where not many have dared. He gave up. of course, his family and friends in doing so. The book tells the story from perfect strangers he met, his adolecence, his adventures and failures leading to his untimely passing. The book also gives you examples of other adventures that have similarities to Chris as well as the author who can relate to Chris’s passion for life. It is a great book and a great story that will inspire.

FIGHT CLUB BY. CHUCK PALAHNIUK In his debut novel, Chuck Palahniuk showed himself to be his generation’s most visionary satirist. ?Fight Club’s estranged narrator leaves his lackluster job when he comes under the thrall of Tyler Durden, an enigmatic young man who holds secret boxing matches in the basement of bars. There two men fight “as long as they have to.” A gloriously original work that exposes what is at the core of our modern world.

THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY BY. DOUGLAS ADAMS Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor. Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”) and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox--the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod’s girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years. SAIL THE SEVEN SEAS! WELL, AT LEAST THE ANDAMAN BAY.

Take a of sip of paradise atop the newly renovated sailing yacht Freedom; managed by Krabi Spesialisten, and watch your day and worries melt away.

K

rabi Spesialisten is once again leading the way with it’s new tour, The Phi Phi Sunset Cruise, offering clients a slow cruise from Ao Nang to Koh Phi Phi then back again. It’s a trip to remember that starts as soon as you board the boat and spread yourself out one of the various spots to relax in. There is a range of seating/ cruising options for visitors to choose from including covered or open areas or rooftop and below-deck beds. A friendly crew who spoke an array of different languages greeted us. They welcomed everyone aboard with explanations on the trip’s itinerary and what to watch out for. I felt my heart skip a beat when I heard we could jump from the boat! So we set out in the morning, perky and alert, thanks to the fresh coffee that was being served by the staff. We began snapping away with our cameras, as the beauty we were witnessing seemed to get better and better the further out we travelled.

42 photography by Terence Loydall

Passing the local islands closer to Ao Nang beach, we caught glimpses of a few dive boats with divers who were preparing for their visits to the underwater world. The water was gently lapping at the rocky edges of the karsts, which erupt from the ocean below, slowly eating at the limestone edges and leaving a dramatic concave effect on each karst. Leaving the local island chain, we entered into the open ocean on our way to Phi Phi and beyond. Skirting the edges of Koh Phi Phi Don we pulled into our first bay for snorkeling and boat jumping! Suiting up with the GoPro camera, we were ready for some underwater shooting, which at 4 meters of depth, required some lung capacity. After an hour of splashing with the fish, we returned on board to Freedom, to a warm welcome of traditional Thai coconut soup with chicken “Tom Kha Gai” - The perfect refreshing food for a late brunch. www.krabi-magazine.com

Island Hopping

Hong Island by Luxury Thai Longtail Boat

“Hong” in Thai means “room” and the literal translation of the Island’s Thai name is “the island with the room”, due to the gorgeous lagoon located at it’s centre.

Our next stop was the renowned Maya Bay of Koh Phi Phi, in all its fame and glory. Unfortunately, after so many years of fame, the bay has become inundated with speedboats and tourists. Our captain, being aware of this, pulled into the far northern area of the bay, which was more remote and quiet. This stop was delightful, and it gave us a unique experience inside this famed Phi Phi region of southern Thailand. Later onto the homestretch, the boat slowly pulled away from Maya Bay and began the slow 7-knot/hour trip back to Ao Nang beach. On the way back we were witness to the wonderful sunset and eventually stars that came over us like a blanket It was a sublime evening. With sand between your toes and a copper warmth on your sun-baked skin, you’ll leave this cruise and sleep for hours remembering the wonderful day you just had, or entertaining visions of the gorgeous sun that had just melted into the horizon. Custom Furniture

Krabi is a hot place. The sun beats down from above strong and everlasting. It’s wonderfully full of vitamin D healthy for your skin and hair, but not so healthy for your outdoor furniture. Many of the chairs, tables and general outdoor furniture throughout southern Thailand are victims of the sun. Many of them after only one or two seasons outdoors can show significant signs of sun damage. Discoloring of the hardwood and breakdown of furniture hardware are common issues for outdoor furniture here in southern Thailand.

There are a number of solutions to your outdoor needs: • Keep your furniture inside… • Cover your furniture nightly • Have custom build aluminum furniture with a polyethylene twining from Indo Furniture Ao Nang

Indo Furniture Ao Nang is the newest branch of the ever popular Lanta Indo furniture having over 8 years of experience building custom aluminum outdoor furniture. Constructing furniture for a variety of locations from private homes and villas to small resorts and hotels throughout Koh Lanta. Indo Furniture has been gaining in popularity due to the style in which they construct their chairs, tables, and couches. By using a method of aluminum welding to construct the frame for every piece their furniture is light yet strong and durable. After the frame is completed, a plastic UV resistant fiber is used to construct the seating and backing area for every piece, leaving the furniture resistant to harmful sun rays. Every piece created is custom built to the clients specifications and the fabric used to create the seating pillows is chosen to reflect the furniture’s intended use. If you are in need of custom-built furniture to compliment your house, villa or resort please contact the team of professionals at Indo Furniture at: pascal.ghielli@gmail.com or feel free to call them at 087-742-4335

LIFEST YLE

A MASSAGE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY! When coming to Thailand, one of the first things you might notice is that massage is offered on almost every street corner, and it is CHEAP! Whenever I visit, the most important budget item I include is enough for a daily massage. The even better news here is that one does not need any justification for this blissful experience. Massage has been proven to significantly benefit our health. IT’S GOOD FOR YOU!!! Stress is a proven underlying factor in most of the common disease states plaguing society now, so if we reduce stress, we can improve our health. Massage does just that. Tiffany Field, founder of the Touch Research Institute in Miami Florida, has studied the health effects of massage on a variety of health disorders, and the results are astonishing. Field began her research in 1992 and has documented that even a 10 minute chair massage can lower blood pressure and slow down your heart rate. She has found that when given math problems after a massage, people perform, twice as fast with ½ the errors.

The cortisol/serotonin connection: Cortisol is a hormone that is produced in response to stress in the body. It is important for our survival as it activates our fight or flight response and stimulates energy when necessary. This is however, intended to only be activated for short spurts of time i.e. for emergencies. Unfortunately in our

46

overly-stressed society, cortisol levels for many of us are consistently high, which is unhealthy. When cortisol is lowered, serotonin - the “feel good” hormone - is increased. When there is more serotonin in the system, the mood and emotional state is better, which supports improved health. This is why when we are overly stressed, we are often agitated and upset easily – our serotonin levels are low. Another benefit of reducing cortisol levels is that our natural killer (NK) cells

are increased. These are the front line of the immune system. These cells kill cancer, viral and harmful bacterial cells, so we want lots of those in our bodies. When cortisol is up, these NK cells are down, and visa versa, so reducing cortisol is good for the immune system.

www.krabi-magazine.com

Massage helps to keep Cortisol levels in balance. In studies conducted over a 5 month period, regular massage reduced cortisol levels by 31%. In a study at the Touch Research Institute, women with stages 1 and 2 breast cancer were given 30-minute massages three times a week for five weeks. At the end of the study, the women had lower depression and hostility levels and increased urinary levels of serotonin, dopamine, NK cells and lymphocytes—all of which suggested their immune systems were stronger. Studies involving many different health conditions are resulting with the same positive outcomes. Massage has been proven to support a litany of health concerns including: Fibromyalgia Stress Related disorders Myofascial pain syndrome Paresthesias and nerve pain Soft tissue strains or injuries Sports injuries Joint pain And TMJ Circulation High blood pressure Improves Flexibility and range of motion Enhances post Operative Rehabilitation Headaches And more.....

Another interesting point is about those giving the massages. When we give a massage, we gain much of the health benefits that we are giving! This is an energetic truth of giving (details in a future article). Giving and receiving are symbiotically connected experiences, so those giving massages are gaining health benefits as well. When you give someone a rose, you get to smell it first, right?!? February | 2015

The ideally recommended therapeutic massage dose is around 10 minutes/day. We can even do this for ourselves! Self massage of the neck, arms, legs, feet, is an easy thing to do while watching TV or even while at work! So, while in Thailand, the land of smiles and delicious massages, I recommend one per day for optimal health benefit, and then when returning to “your real life” keep some massage regimen in your life – your body will love you for it!

A STEP BACK IN TIME I

N THE 16TH CENTURY, TAKUA-PA WAS PART OF A BUSY AND ECONOMICALLY VIBRANT REGION OF SOUTHERN THAILAND, BUT TODAY, ONLY MEMORIES REMAIN OF ITS INTERNATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE.

FE ATURE

SPECIAL TRIP

Only 100 kilometers from Krabi town, Takua-Pa is easily accessible and rather centrally located between Phuket, Krabi and Khao Sok National Park. This was possibly one of the reasons the region held such prominence in the trading empire that saw Siam (old Thailand) flourish. Prior to the 15th century, the region was commonly referred to as Takola. It was an important stop on the maritime silk route that connected India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and many other Southeast Asian countries to Europe. Ships loaded with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, pepper and turmeric would pass by these waters on their way to the Middle East and eventually to a variety of ports in Europe. In 1498 under the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama, the influential trade route from Europe, around the Cape of Good Hope and onward to the waters surrounding the region of Takola was pioneered. This trade route inspired many other explorers of the time and gave way to one of the most traveled and profitable trade routes in history. The Portuguese traders that came to land in the region of Takola developed parts of the region using the architecture and construction style that they were accustomed to back in their homeland. This gave birth to a variety of small Portuguese-styled towns that are commonly found throughout the region. The most famous of these regions were Takua-Pa, Phuket old town and PenangMalaysia. The birth of the spice trade paved the way for many other developments in the region and for the economy as a whole to flourish, but this was not the only resource to affect the region. Later in the 18th century, British explorers discovered tin deposits from Phuket north to Phang-Nga. This gave way to a number of mines that once again allowed the region to flourish and expand even further. In time, as the number of ships and ports entering into the spice trade increased, ships moved on and the trade in general spread to other regions such as Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Smaller areas such as Takua-Pa were marginalized and left with less trade opportunities. This, in conjunction with the drop in tin pricing around the 20th century, left Takua-Pa a ghost town of sorts.

February | 2015

51

Today, the remnants of the SinoPortuguese architecture are still evident in the old town, with terra-cotta tile roofs, roman-style pillars supporting outdoor balconies and large open-spaced indoors. In fact every house in Takua-Pa old town, was built with its own well, offering each dwelling it’s own source of fresh drinking water. Many of these wells are still operating but since the wells are rather shallow, the water is no longer used for drinking. Walking down the main road in this old town we are constantly reminded of the area’s history. Old photos of the Chinese migrants who came to Takua-Pa to work in the tin mines can be seen in many of the homes. These are a fascinating assortment of 90-year old photographs – including some of the well-known Chinese vegetarian festival. Along the street, there is also an original Chinese temple dating back to the 17th century that simply blends into the street, looking as yet just another house along the way. Being in this area feels like a step back in time, and yet the locals live there seemingly oblivious to the historical treasure surrounding them. They are charmingly unaccustomed to foreigners exploring their streets. They warmly greeted us with smiles and they invited us inside for a cup of tea and to show off their family photographs.

This is a slice of another world in the heart of southern Thailand.

After exploring the historical district of the town, we made our way to the outskirts where city development is starting to encroach on the natural surroundings. The town has vast expanses of rolling and jagged hills with winding rivers extending through them like large veins. A large river ran next to the central local market offering us access to pristine and exotic nature in only a10-minute boat ride. Traveling upstream we turned off to a smaller tributary where the motor was cut. Only the drivers’ paddling which pushed us through this thick mangrove forest could be heard. Two minutes later the boat driver spotted our first mangrove snake, a beautiful, jet-black specimen with bright yellow stripes running from nose to tail. It sat calmly and flicked its’ tongue to wave us by. Soon after, the boat driver pointed out a two-meter Burmese python coiled up and resting on a cluster of branches. The snake sat peacefully

52

www.krabi-magazine.com

without giving us any notice. Next, a number of hornbills shouted out and then we saw a troop of macaque monkeys peering down at us from the canopy. It became clear that this was a hugely biodiverse region and a treasure to explore! We returned to town and continued investigating the vast array of historical monuments. After we made our way through this amazing town, we then headed out to the nearby island of Koh Kho Khao. This is a long island in the Andaman Sea which extends17 kilometers from tip to tip. It was rumored to have a large airstrip that the US military used during WWII to ship in troops and supplies. Heading to the north of the island we found the airstrip which was now a long open field covered in overgrown grass, obviously not used for decades. Next, we stopped at a small beachside resort and slowed down to rest on the wooden beach benches there. We decided to relax and enjoy some local Thai cuisine while watching the turquoise waters extend to the horizon. The rest of the afternoon was drifting away into the horizon, until we were awoken by the call to attention for our next stop, which was to explore Koh Pa. This is an ideal deserted island right off the coast with gorgeous snorkeling sites all around it. We took a long tail boat to this island and stopped for some great snorkeling along the way, which was the perfect way to finish off our time on Koh Kho Khao. Later, when we returned to Takua-Pa old town and were walking down the same quiet main road we had visited previously, we were stunned at the sights, and we had to do a double take. This same road that had previously been empty and void of significant human energy had transformed into a bustling and fascinating marketplace with shop keepers selling anything from fried insects to hand made hard candies. The products there were much more diverse and interesting than those I have seen at other similar markets – again, set up for local interest only, not for the tourist trade. The experience in Takua-Pa was unlike anything we have experienced in southern Thailand, a perfect blend of cultural immersion, historical intrigue and natural exploration. It is a great experience for everyone from individuals to large families.

Haute Cuisine

Thailand is definitely one of those places where if you go hungry, you’re doing something wrong. Food is absolutely everywhere and it’s hard to walk more than a dozen yards before you bump into a stall selling anything from BBQ chicken to papaya salad. It has to be said that some of the best Thai food can often be found at these unassuming food cards. But in order to guarantee your palate get’s the finest cuisine, one must look up.

I

f you look far enough up, you may catch a glimpse of “The Hilltop”, located on the side of the huge limestone karst in Ao nang. Ran by a local Thai, Mr. Pichai, and the new generation, The Hilltop has labelled itself as a Thai Bar and Restaurant with something special up it’s sleeve. The drive up to the restaurant serves as a prelude to the show-stopping view one is treated to upon arrival. This is the jewel in the Hilltop’s crown and absolutely must seen to be truly appreciated. A vista over the whole of Ao Nang, the Andaman sea and the outlaying islands is what awaits, and truly feels as if one is on top of everything.

With a huge Hollywood-esque sign proclaiming their name it has turned out to be one of the best photo backdrops around based on the number of folks posing before it for the evening. The choice of seating is exemplary, with elegant tables and chairs arranged under a huge canopy that spill onto the neat gardens, gradually changing into comfortable, stylish sofas to lounge in. Needless to say, folks flock here at the end of the day as the view of the Andaman sunset from an al fresco sofa with a glass of something chilled is outstanding.

54

Whilst many come for just this and no more, others stay to dine at the restaurant that changes into a festival of lights after dark. Smooth jazz plays through the sound system or a live due sometimes take to the discreet stage to entertain diners with well-known classics. Diners are offered 2 separate menus, one with western food and the other solely Thai fare. There is so much choice that it mades sense to split the different cuisines up, so as to narrow down the decisions by 50% based on one’s preferences.

www.krabi-magazine.com

Thai food is what The Hilltop is renowned for. This is evident by the number of Thai diners that can be seen enjoying their evening hereon a regular basis. The seafood in particular is downright odd. A seafood salad with chopped fruit and chill might raise a few eyebrows, but is an absolute must-try. It became so popular, they named it “The Hilltop Salad”. Another gem is the “Hilltop Duck” with a similar credentials. Generous slices of the most tender and flavorful duck breast that would be the envy of any 5 star restaurant anywhere are topped with a sweet/spicy sauce that is simply delicious. As extensive wine and beer list is on hand to compliment the food, and there are even happy hour promotions that last all day, for those who really want to get into the spirit of their holiday! With a stunning location, sumptuous cuisine, fine wines and ice-cold beers The Hilltop should be on the “must-doat-least-once” list of every visitor to the Krabi region.

Fancy some Curry? Ao Nang’s got your fix.

Curry. So many choices in Thailand, green, red, yellow, penang, massaman - even if you don’t like curry, you’ll find something here to raise your eyebrow. We love it, and set out on a mission to find dome doozies, as well as delve a little deeper into what makes a truly great Thai Curry...

T

his past month we ventured out into the heart of it all, the Ao nang beach front road. Ventured out we did but not blindly, we went with a purpose, a purpose to find the best curry on the strip.

right?) This one had a special flare to it, it was elevated onto the second story of a row of shops which gave us a beautiful view of the ocean while we sat, relaxed and enjoyed some cold beers and zesty and flavorful curries.

After a few disappointments, we ended up at at one of the larger eateries on the block Green Curry (seem’s a little bit of a set up

The first one out was the flagship green curry with white rice - a beautifully decorated dish with red peppers extending out from the center and a soft white coconut milk drizzled over the top. This one was full and robust in flavor, thick coconut milk and fresh vegetables made up the bulk of this dish. Next up was a simple break food, chicken satay topped with thick, tasty peanut sauce with chopped peanuts giving the sauce substance and added flavor. Then on to the Penang curry with it’s flavorful international history. Penang curry is actually a dish (as one might guess) from Penang, Malaysia and not from Thailand. Penang curry is a nice break from the other traditional curries of Thailand as (if made correctly) it will have a tender balance of both spice and sweetness, a truly wonderful dish. The Penang curry at Green Curry was no disappointment. Again

58

decorated perfectly with a range of sliced fresh peppers and thick sauce, Penang curry is made with oil instead of coconut milk making it a little thicker but far more flavorful. Overall, the evening at Green Curry doing our little curry selection was nothing less than we expected. The food was spot on, the music in the background complimented the atmosphere perfectly and the view of the sun slowly melting into the horizon just made the whole evening one to remember! Please don’t make the mistake of planning the rest of your evening out too much as you might want to linger longer at this beachfront restaurant.

“Green Curry” can be found on the Ao Nang beach road next to the Ao nang Princeville and Jeseao restaurant. To make a reservation call 086-978-7949 www.krabi-magazine.com

FINANCI AL

Expat

Money Corner

By Jerry Dingley

Retirement planning shortfalls

The alarming decline in worldwide retirement provisions and the ever increasing deficits in both government and private pension schemes will inevitably lead to a reduced income stream for those reliant on their pensions to fund retirement income.’ Many individuals are still in a state of inertia with regards to their retirement planning following the financial fiascos and scandals of 2008, 2011 and still to date, so many are reluctant and indeed fearful to move out of cash deposits. Consequently with interest rates in many cases below that of inflation this problem is now being compounded the longer it goes on. In many cases, pension/retirement money has not been allocated correctly to reduce the risk of loss or sudden and protracted falls in value at a time when an individual may not have the ability to recover losses. Taking an income from a pot that is already in valuation decline is a sure fire way to very quickly erode capital reducing income levels even further.

60

I am constantly amazed at how aggressively allocated some pension plans are and often see those in their sixties who are or will be heavily reliant on their pension income to pay living expenses, but with nearly 100% of their schemes invested in only two or three boutique ‘alternative’ funds. Often such funds hold illiquid physical assets (commercial property for example) with little regard to the market and institutional risk inherent within.

Modern portfolio theory A correctly structured pre or post retirement portfolio would usually consist of many different asset classes that are not directly correlated to each other – meaning that they don’t all go up or down at the same time in sympathy with each other and by broadly the same amounts. Using non correlated asset classes spreads risk away from over reliance in any single sector or institution, adds diversification, and can enhance overall returns with significantly less volatility.

In some cases, investors are actually doubling up on their exposure to high risk assets to recoup earlier losses and thus invite further portfolio erosion, not to mention taking on added personal stress at a time when they should be enjoying their retirement!

TOP Press – QROPS UK Pension Schemes Update! Unexpectedly in December, HMRC (UK tax office) introduced a new statutory instrument to come into effect from April 2015 that seeks to align the regulations for overseas pension schemes including QROPS, with the changes introduced in the Taxation of Pensions Act 2014. Although still under consultation it will likely proceed, and will present pension holders with important choices to make.

The main point therein is that the current requirement for 70% of a tax relieved fund to provide an ‘income for life’ is removed – ergo, those individuals of any nationality with existing QROPS UK Pension schemes could in theory be able to access all of their accumulated fund as a cash lump sum at age 55 if they chose to do so. Some will no doubt be tempted by this new facility but seeking specialist advice is essential here, as any funds withdrawn in excess of the usual 30% tax free allowance could be subject to income tax rates of up to 40% thereby reducing retirement income even more – see paragraph 1 !

Clean Beach, Clean Life This past December, the volunteer-based organization Projects Abroad lead the way again on the 5th bi-annual underwater debris cleanup hosted by the local Krabi government.

D

rawing an impressive 63 participants from a variety of organizations, the two-day event was a great success for the reefs around Koh Hong archipelago which is within the protected marine National Park area of Thailand. The volunteers were from a number of organizations, but the Projects Abroad group included freelance and staffed divers from Poseidon dive centre. The Projects Abroad group was responsible for an impressive 300kg of trash collected over the two-day period.

62

The divers all suited up in SCUBA gear and jumped in searching for anything and everything that was not placed in the water naturally. These included discarded fishing nets, unused squid hooks, empty cans, bottles and much more. Due to the lack of education within the local fishing community in Krabi and the tourists that sometimes forget about what they should do while on vacation, the seas and reefs are becoming more and more littered every year. We all hope that with each event as this one more of the community leaders will begin to start implementing stricter laws and more effective punishments for those caught breaking them. www.krabi-magazine.com

The reefs around Koh Hong are just some of the many places in the Andaman sea that are the focus of intense tourist and fishing activities, making them more vulnerable to degradation over time. This was one of the most successful ones to date, recovering an impressive 1000 kilograms of trash and debris, with many of the leading Krabi government officials present vowing to help further the protection of our vulnerable oceans. The coral reefs of our sea are made up of two main types - hard and soft corals. Many of the hard corals of our ocean can take up to a decade to grow just a centimeter, therefore a bottle that is carelessly thrown overboard can February | 2015

sink and break a large piece of coral which might take years to grow back. Discarded fishing nets that are often dragged over large areas can tug on the edges of coral and and cause large areas to break off. It is important we all consider these as our collective oceans. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction and if we are to survive as a planet all together it is important that we all do our part. If you see someone throwing overboard they shouldn’t, politely tell them, if you see some trash on the beach or floating in the ocean, please do your part and pick it up.

PHOTOGR APHY

FINDING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

“ M O J O ” In this “hashtag” and “selfie” world that we live in, our senses are constantly bombarded with imagery both good and bad. Counter to what one may think, you can very easily make an argument that the oversaturation of visual fodder we experience in our every day life has actually dulled our creative senses rather than sharpened them. On one side, more and more people have the capacity to take technically great photos due to the influx of affordable technology and easier ways to put our stuff out there, but on the other side it has created a wider gap between photographers and those

64

who simply take photos because they can. The problem is that, because we’re constantly being exposed to imagery from both sides of the field, and often within the same context (read: social media), the chasm between these two groups of photographers has become increasingly foggy and the path to the former category less clear. There’s one simple and fundamental thing that separates inspired photographers from mediocre ones: mojo. Here are a few ideas on how you, too, can find your photography “mojo” and be on your way to taking inspired and meaningful photos:

www.krabi-magazine.com

Educate Yourself Yes, I know. It sounds a bit harsh, but it needs to be said. The reality is that there are far more cameras out there than there are people who know what to do with them. If you don’t know what you’re doing with your camera and are unfamiliar with fundamental concepts of art, it can be next to impossible to find your photography mojo. Start by learning how to really use your camera. Most cameras geared towards a serious consumer these days are packed full of features that enable you to make the most of any photographic situation. These are there for a reason and it is truly shocking how few aspiring photographers take the time or to familiarize themselves with their cameras While “automatic” settings have become increasingly “smart” in trying to figure out what their users are trying to do, they still have crippling limitations. By harnessing the potential of your camera through knowledge, you’ll not only be able to capture more perfectly executed photos from a technical perspective, but you’ll also unleash a lot of creativity that would otherwise be suppressed. When you understand how your camera responds to light, an entire world of possibilities presents itself in terms of creative potential for telling a story.

Find What You Love to Shoot Stylistically, as a photographer, most of my work relies heavily upon a “human element.” Even many of my landscape photos contain some human element because, frankly, I find them to be more interesting that way. In retrospect, my leanings towards people as a visual focal point should have been obvious–I’ve always been a “people watcher,” but if you had asked me what sort of photographer I wanted to be when I first started out, I would have told you that I wanted to be a wildlife photographer. Sometimes you don’t find inspiration; it finds you. I initially got into photography while living and working in Singapore. I did a great deal of traveling during that time and it was through these travels that I discovered my eye was far more drawn to people that I encountered than wildlife.

means of motivating myself. When you’ve taken thousands of photos, sometimes it can be difficult to see things from a unique perspective; especially if you’re constantly shooting in familiar surroundings. The easiest way to give yourself an assignment is to simply go somewhere new. When you’re in surroundings that are unfamiliar to you, your eye is freer to be drawn to things that stand out and a “story” will naturally arise from the things your eye is drawn to. It’s no coincidence that travel and photography go so well together. That said, traveling doesn’t necessarily mean getting on a plane and hopping over to the other side of the planet –although that’s certainly a great way to do it. Sometimes “travel” can mean simply mean visiting places in your area that you haven’t seen or doing things that you haven’t done. Alternatively, you can liberate your eye by giving it something to focus on. The next time you go out to take some photos, do some research beforehand and pick a story to tell visually. It doesn’t have to be anything exhaustive. For example, if you’re going to a temple, research some aspect of the religion that is followed there and try to capture examples of it. When there is a specific narrative that needs to be told, your brain and your eye seem to work better together and it’s a lot easier to find unique angles when approaching the subject.

Try these methods out and find your “photography mojo.” Here’s an example of an “assignment” that I gave myself to provide creative direction for a daytrip to Boudhanath, an important stupa for Tibetan pilgrams in Kathmandu, Nepal. I focused on the idea of “impermanence,” which is an important concept in Buddhism and used long exposures to illustrate the passing of time.

If you’re just starting out, don’t get stuck on an idea of what sort of photographs you want to take. Instead, let your eye guide your hands and see what photographs you take naturally. If you’ve been into photography for a while but seem to be in a rut, start with a clean slate by trying something different.

Give Yourself an Assignment If you know how to use your equipment, know what you like to shoot, and still have trouble finding your photography mojo, try giving yourself an assignment to jumpstart your creativity and give yourself direction. Even established photographers sometimes find themselves in a rut; I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that sometimes I, too, use this as a February | 2015

FE ATURE

MAGIO BIKE TOUR.

Last December, two amazing Italian cyclists who are traveling around the globe passed through Krabi province. We were lucky enough to meet and talk with them.

We are Giovanni and Marco. We are two Italian guys who are doing something different, something off-road. We left Italy two years ago with a big dream: The World by bicycle. We are from a town in Italy called Ravenna and our goal is to return in five years, and to cycle every continent. We have two simple rules: • Follow a nontraditional route • Stay as close to the sea as possible

O

70

To date we have traveled 25,000 km, and we are headed towards our 21st country, Vietnam. After this, we will go north to Laos, China and Mongolia but we keep Krabi in our hearts, like a second home.

ur story is one of friendship, as we have known each other since childhood. After sharing experiences at school, with sports and friends, we decided to make our dream come true by having this adventure and discovering the world together. Now the big question, “why by bicycle?” To be honest, we are not professional cyclists, but in a previous trip we rode bicycles and found them to be the best friend and friendliest vehicle to travel on. By riding a bike, we go slow and have more opportunities to see and understand the places we visit. We reached Krabi the first time in October 2013, after 9500 km of road across Europe, West Asia, India and Nepal. Krabi was a wonderful place for us to rest and recoup our much needed energy. In Krabi, we met Renato the owner of the restaurant Viva in the heart of Krabi-town.

www.krabi-magazine.com

Our travels are simple and cheap - fortunately, everywhere we go we find good street food. Our habits are rustic, sometimes we eat without cutlery or live without showers, but traveling simply teaches us that with a smile, everything turns into an experience to remember.

I remember a night in Indonesia when we camped in a mosque. After 7 hours of cycling, we cleaned ourselves in the basin where Muslims wash their feet before praying. We ate plain rice with chicken and prawns and we communicated with body language. We finally lay down on the cold floor, and were lulled to sleep by the mosquitoes buzzing and truck noises. What we lost in comfort that night, we gained upon awakening: a colorful dawn, the minaret imam song and a hundred kids around us, laughing and hugging their new white-skinned guests. It seemed a dream, like a hymn to life. But our story is also one of mountains of enemy and lover together. One morning in Sumatra, after 3 days of hills and swamps, I woke up stiff but rested. I washed my face in the nearby water tank, which was filled from the nights’ rain, and I wore my dirty, sweaty bike clothes of the day before. It seemed just another brave day, but the mountains were waiting for us. It was the real climb.

at Marco. His eyes told me that he too was exhausted, also clinging to his handlebars, as was our fate. My calves, like stone ready to crack, my breath as a gale of wind, unable to find oxygen, but my heart was a crazy piston, and it kept me driving on. Bicycle and mountain. My feelings were a mixture of effort and triumph, challenge and motivation, lost in the eternal question of whether to stay or leave. That day, the limit was the imaginary line of the equator, the zero parallel. That day and always, the limit was my mind, the finish line that we create as our goal.. Exhausted, I pushed on, trying to overcome my limit, to overstep the equator, to arrive a little bit further. Call it curiosity of my limits; it has always been my heart that lets me go beyond my mind. And beyond my lonely soul. Follow these intrepid travellers on facbook at: www.facebook/magiobiketour There was a woman with a veil washing her clothes in a stream next to her house, a young Indian loaded with heavy bunches of palm fruit, and throngs of men sculpted the rock roadside with hammers and pickaxes - this reminded me of forced laborer. I felt privileged in my freedom of choice to travel the world this way. We rode along ten, twenty, thirty kilometers and then the road went up, up, mercilessly up without respite. I was sweating and fighting. I devoured all of the energy in my body then I stood up on my pedals. I turned back and looked

Outstanding Opulance at Layana Resort & Spa

Layana is Koh lanta’s premier adults-only resort that offers guests a slice of heaven on Earth... Being the premier adult only resort in Lanta, Layana Resort & Spa prides itself on it’s commitment to quality and service, the General Manager Stefan Heintze even makes it his duty to personally welcome and wish a safe goodbye to for the resort’s guests. The atmosphere when entering Layana blankets one in total comfort and clean luxury as the resort was designed with a certain traveller in mind. Looking out over Layana’s grounds from the generous balcony of the lobby area, one can truly take in the beauty of this amazing resort. The grounds are meticulously manicured with painstakingly perfection with an attention to detail that us unrivaled. Heading out to the beach looking out to the sunset, one can see straight to the horizon and nestle their feet in the soft white sand, relax and listen to calming

lounge music resounding from the sleek yet tropical beachfront bar/restaurant. If the beach is not on your top ten list then it is entirely possible to change things up and head to the Linger Longer Spa and treatment center, which now offers the new salt spa service. The salt spa places people in a calmly lit room with grated white salt on the floor. Salt is then atomized and blown into the room for the visitor to breathe. The vitamins and minerals from this salt spa treatment are so popular that this new spa concept has become popular in various resorts throughout the globe. For those looking for the ultimate getaway, Layana’s large private mansion ‘La Maison’ is something to behold. Standing completely alone, large walls around the property offers visitors complete privacy from the rest of the resort. With a private pool, lounge, two bedrooms, a private kitchen and a 24 hour private butler on site to cater to residents every request, this is truly a place of pampering pleasure. In fact, the vast majority of guests love their stay at Layana; currently 40% of the year round guests are returning ones. This says something about the quality and attention to detail the resort takes into account. Take a look at this fantastic resort by visiting www.layanaresort.com

ACTIVITIES SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELLING There are no fewer than 19 dive operators on Koh Lanta and most of them - if not all - will be qualified to take first-timers out for a fully supervised scuba dive. Dive sites nearby include the worldfamous Phi Phi islands as well as the Koh Haa archipelago - all of which are within easy reach. The price you pay will generally include all equipment rental, lunch, fruits and drinking water. A lot of the dive operators speak a variety of European languages, so there’s a good chance you can get an instructor that - quite literally - speaks your language.

SUP No, it’s not a shortened version of a popular greeting. SUP stands for Stand Up Paddle, and Koh Lanta’s calm water is ideal for this water activity. There are a few operators on the island and conditions are suitable almost any time of year. Some companies can even arrange tours to other islands for an SUP excursion. Get that tan, work the jiggle out of your gut, and when it’s hot, jump ship!

THAI COOKING CLASSES Thai food in the west is generally quite expensive, creamy and “toned down” in comparison to what you find in this country. Learning to cook authentic Thai food in Thailand is about as good as it gets, and many of the kitchens are open-air or even on the beach front just to add to the experience. Classes are a great way to spend a morning or afternoon if the weather is a little wet for other outdoor activities, and you get to eat everything you make too - so you don’t have to worry about what’s for lunch!

If you’re dead set on staying well and truly within reach of the water’s surface, then snorkelling is the way forward and many of the dive boats also welcome snorkellers on board in addition to divers.

YOGA Yoga is a great way to take back control over your holistic, mental and emotional health, and Koh Lanta is an exceptional place for doing so. Most yoga studios are set either beachfront or in tropical gardens. If the spirit compels you, you can even find a multi-day retreat or yoga teacher certification courses. Namaste.

HELP LOCAL ANIMALS

RENT A MOPED & EXPLORE

Rated on TripAdvisor as the No.1 activity on Koh Lanta, Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) is a non-profit organisation working to relieve the suffering of local animals through sterilization, vaccination and medical care.

Mopeds are everywhere in Thailand, and Lanta is no exception. They’re cheap, easy to operate and are hard wearing. In Saladan you can hire them absolutely everywhere. You might have to leave your passport with the rental agency, but don’t worry - this is standard practice. Everyone does it. It’s an insurance for them that you’ll bring the bike back, is all.

It’s open daily to visitors who can tour the facility and meet the animals. Whether you’re interested in taking a dog for a stroll on the beach (some of the dogs love to swim!) or are happier cuddling one of the many affectionate cats, LAW is the place where you can get your furry fix while contributing to a worthwhile cause.

Biking around Lanta is the best way to truly explore all it’s nooks and crannies, and you might even come across a few surprises along the way….

BODYTALK by Suzi Hall

Your New Year’s inspiration! Did you know that 60 to 70% of your communication is body language?

I am sure you can relate to this from the many experiences in Thailand where no verbal language is shared and there you stand trying to communicate what place you want to go, fruit you’re looking for, nearest beach etc. Flaying arms and facial expressions making up for the gap in common language. Sometimes it works and you have success getting what you asked for and sometimes you just end up with fishy, dry shrimp in your papaya salad (not a personal favorite) Considering your body language in relation to your body confidence, if non-verbal communication is mainly how we are perceived, then surely we can trick people into thinking we are feeling great when we’re having an off day, week or still feeling the post Christmas bulge? Those days when you roll out of bed and look as though you have spent the evening on the sofa with the last series of Games of Thrones and *insert your favorite junk food keeping you company (Not disagreeing that this isn’t a great way to spend an evening)

Faking it These are the days when we need to ‘fake it’ Pull out the winning outfit that people always say you look so good in, get dressed to music that lifts your spirits, don’t look in the mirror, don’t worry how you look, tell yourself, fabulous! Practice tricks of confident people, remember no one knows how you really feel, it is all about how you hold yourself, tall, proud and sexy. Always look people in the eye, remember their name and smile

80

pleasantly. Distract the focus from yourself by asking lots of questions, people love talking about themselves If someone compliments you, say thank you.

Fueling it The body is happy when it is fed good nutritious food, walk out in your fabulous outfit full of confidence and spend the day making up for the pizza and beers… eat greens, lean meat, boiled eggs, avoid sugar, especially in fruit shakes that seem so healthy, find unprocessed food to give your digestion a break and drink tons of mineral water. My perfect day of eating on Koh Lanta: Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs with rye bread (available from the German Bakery) served with fresh cucumbers and tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil. Snack: A handful of unprocessed almonds (bought online from Good Kharma health food store, Phuket http:// healthfoodthailand.com/) Lunch: Tom yum soup with brown rice (served at Irie bar on Koh Lanta) make it spicy to boost metabolism. Snack: A crunchy apple or watermelon both full of fibre, with a yogurt for an extra protein hit. Dinner: Tuna salad with lots of fresh veggies and served with sweet potato mash.

Beating* it Another simple way to feel better about your body, is make it move and sweat. Go running, punch some bags at your local Muay Thai gym, go for a cycle or a walk, attend a yoga class, anything that will get your heart beating. Do it to release those happy endorphins, the chemicals sent to your brain that signal even though you may look exactly the same when you left your front door, you surely will not feel the same. www.krabi-magazine.com

Checking it Lastly, the importance of the way you look while training, not talking about fancy lycra or admiring your biceps and kissing the ‘guns’, I am referring to the term Proprioception; which is how you perceive your own body, its movement patterns and the significance of this during exercise. This became very relevant to me in Muay Thai training, previously when shadowboxing was mentioned I cringed, practicing up and down on the gym floor, fighting an invisible opponent felt silly and self-conscious. Then I realized that watching your body really gives a sense of correct technique. As a personal trainer and yoga instructor I am the mirror, I am the voice that corrects your posture, alignment and reminds you to pull in your abs of steel. So use that voice in your head or watch yourself in the mirrors when you move, compliment your progress or even just on being there, because whatever it is, it is good enough!

February | 2015

UNPLUG IN KOH JUM

Koh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint. Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi from the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged in, has it lost its reputable unplugged character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is as tranquil and laid back as it has always been. In fact, what is noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture still dominates the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family run character ranging from the back packers paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harbouring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese Pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of

the island amongst the mangroves. Resorts are located facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villages to remain authentic without any significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominantly a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi and is home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these village engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting - or Batik - as cottage industries. While the north is mountainous, the south comprises dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and also prevent large masses of tourists from ever overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year.

FROM

LOVE Why are all these people from all around the globe flocking to Ao Nang to live and build new lives? We talk with a wonderful woman from Russia who moved to Ao Nang to start a new life and see what she has to say. Hello dear friends, my name is Julia Sokolova I was born and raised in the small town of Rubtsovsk Altay, Russia. After graduating from secondary school I went to Novosibirsk for university where I received a degree in economics Which I used to begin my banking career. Prior to December 2011 I lived a normal life, every day was predetermined and I knew what everyday would bring. I would work in my bank, wait for the days to end and wait to travel on my various holidays, go SCUBA diving, visit exotic places and meet interesting people. It was on one of my holidays in which I was introduced to Krabi, which changed my life ‌

MEET THE LOCALS

WHEN DREAMS COME TRUE I moved to Krabi in the winter of 2013 and after only a month of living here I felt a truly powerful and warm energy all around. I realized that I was building my new way, living my dream in a place where I felt wonderful. All of us have dreams and to not see these dreams realized should be a crime. I no longer wanted to live as if everything has already happened in my life, I was young and full of energy and wanted to build my new live in Krabi. So upon my return to Russia I talked with my closest friend Irena Morozova about my idea to move to Krabi and start a business, her first reaction was skeptical but after long talks she decided to join me in my endeavor, to come back to Krabi and start a business. she simply said, “I’m coming with you!!!” and a week later we were on an airplane and off towards a new life. The question what we were going to do in Thailand never arose as we both love to cook, so naturally it came to us, we will open a restaurant. We were both brought up from childhood learning how to cook great Russian food from our mothers and grandmothers. Every dish we cook we put a piece of our soul and love into. Upon arrival we learned of a nice restaurant for sale called HAWA RUSSIA or “our Russia” this was an excellent opportunity for us as the food is the style of food we know and love, Russian. We bought the restaurant and then changed the menu to better suit the tastes we know Russian people love so much. Russian cuisine as any home kitchen, combines nutritious and healthy ingredients, the main feature of Russian cuisine is the richness in vitamins and minerals, especially those necessary in the cold season.

Russian cuisine has long been famous for using ingredients from those most were available in Russia. Potatoes, one of the main products that we use in our kitchen, rich pies, boiled and mashed potatoes, dumplings, chips and more. A special place in Russian cuisine is the salting and preservation of vegetables such as mushrooms and cucumbers and sauerkraut. Let’s not forget the favorite dumplings of Russia, namely Pelmeni, without this of course no Russian feast is complete.

At our new restaurant we pamper our guests with a variety of pancakes, supplementing them with various fillings such as salted salmon, butter, sour cream, homemade jam from berries. In this beautiful warm country we have learned to bake homemade brown bread, which is a favorite addition to every feast. Also from this bread we prepare a truly Russian drink; kvass. Kvass is a thirst quenching and courage-giving drink. All this and much more, we prepare with great love and energy. After moving to Krabi my life changed, I have learned a lot here, I now notice the beauty in every passing moment, Krabi has taught me to go through life with a smile on my face because when you smile the world smiles back. Visit Julia at Nasha Russia in Ao Nang and try some of their amazing cuisine

EDUCATION AT IT’S BEST “My Aunt lives in Phuket and was invited to a tennis competition at Thanyapura. After seeing the facilities and applying, I was awarded a tennis scholarship with Thanyapura. I train every Monday to Friday before school, and again in the evenings. I’ve been here for 5 months and love it. ” Mattu When choosing the best option for your child’s education, there are many factors to take into account. Considering the quality of an academic programme, social development, positive competitiveness, supporting individuality, enhancing creativity, catering for interests and, above all, promoting happiness and well being, will all play a part in the decision making process. However, options can feel limited when the variety of schools within your area fall short of your expectations. Many modern families around the world are choosing boarding as the most suitable choice for their child’s education, although for many at first, this can seem like a daunting proposition. Contemporary Boarding Schools empower their students to work together and learn from one another, to gain a greater sense of independence, to self-manage their responsibilities, and cultivate a deeper love for learning. Students develop an extended family with their boarding community, and lifelong friendships are created between fellow boarders.
