WINDOW AO NANG BEACH At 20 km from Krabi Town Ao Nang Beach is the most developed of Krabi’s many beaches. Ao Nang Beach is famous for it’s white sand beaches and large limestones karsts towering over the eastern edges. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs can be found here. It is the hub from which to plan your trip to sea as well as to any number of the nearby islands. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH Just around the corner from Ao Nang, yet still undeveloped with only a few resorts, bars and restaurants, Noppharat Thara beach offers a bit more “local” feel than it’s sister Ao Nang. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather during sunset and on weekends. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to a small island on the western edge of the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH A further 20 km away from Ao Nang Klong Muang is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful and hassle free holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. KOH LANTA BEACHES Koh Lanta has a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Koh Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away..
RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES Are split and separated from Ao Nang by a limestone mountain range. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known all over the world for their famous climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or ‘deep water solo’ cliff jumping into the sea, hike the limestone trail to a lagoon or the viewpoint or simply chill out and watch the day pass you by. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you can see from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow - and sail away surrounded by turquoise water.. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Gai) you can catch a glimpse of a chicken’s neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. The second island, Koh Tub, is connected to Chicken Island by a sandy isthmus and people can walk from one to another at low tide.
TUBKAEK BEACH Next to Klong Muang Beach, Tub Keak beach is another place to just get away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail “Naga trek” to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

ON KRABI KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlights of Krabi Province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many hidden caves and lagoons makes it perfect for snorkeling and exploring. Visit Lading and Pakbia islands before Koh Hong as they are much less visited and sport a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. Koh hong is usually crowded until 3pm so we recommend visiting other Lading and Pakbia in the morning, then going to Koh Hong after the crowds have started to leave. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s birds nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming ‘The Beach’ at the now iconic Maya Bay. KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.
KOH LANTA The developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset views, heaps of activities and glimpses into sea gypsy life. Koh Lanta is also a National Park that comprises many local islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS These iconic karsts characterize most of the inland area of Krabi, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai, in between Ao Nang and Krabitown. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geologically rather unique and is only 5Km from Ao Nang beach. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK At 20 km from Krabi Town, the Khao Phanom Bencha national park comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes it’s name. One of the features of the park is Huay Thoi Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK Located in the north of the province, Tarnbok Khoranee national park is made up of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known kayaking explorers as there are a number of tributaries curving into a number of small caves boasting ancient cave paintings. SA MORAKOT OR THE EMERALD POOL Truly a natural wonder of Krabi: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40°C fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle in Klong Thom district, 70 kilometers from Ao Nang. HOT SPRINGS Situated in Klong Thom district, These natural hot springs are natures jacuzzis. They melt away tensions, relieve the body and mind with the fresh spring water running over mineral enriched limestone rocks.

NEW MEKONG RIVER BLASTING PROJECT WILL ONLY BENEFIT CHINA: EXPERTS Plan to make river accessible to barges ‘will seriously hurt Thailand and Laos’

ECONOMIC experts have warned that the Mekong-Lancang River navigation-channel improvement project will only benefit China – while having serious negative impacts on Thailand and Laos.
Experts said the project would only benefit a few people while millions who depend on the river for their livelihoods would end up suffering.
At a public forum entitled “Criticising the Mekong River’s Rapids Removal Project” at Sueb Nakhasathien Foundation yesterday, experts from different fields expressed concern about the plan to make the Mekong navigable for cargo barges of up to 500 tonnes gross. The barges will

“Recent trade statistics about Mekong River ports in Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong indicate that Thailand is importing more from China, while exports to China have slowed down. She explained that before surveys and studies of such a large project are conducted, those concerned should first see if the project is worth implementing based on solid scientific calculations. Regional tourism is on the rise, global tourism is celebrating it’s 7th straight year of growth. According to a recent statistic the total number of international tourism grew by 3.9% from 2015 and hit a new record of 1.23 billion arrivals globally, according to the World Tourism Organisation. This kind of sustained growth has not been seen globally since the 1960’s, once can only hope the trend continues. With airlines continually opening new routes globally and new airports are continually being opened and renovated travel is becoming easier and easier. With the onset of more budget airlines such as Air Asia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Airlines and Thai Smile travel is more affordable and accessible for everyone. When measuring the regions of the globe Asia and the pacific led growth in international tourist arrivals in 2016 leaving an 8% increase over 2015 arrivals. Asia as a whole in continuing to grow and with the recent opening of Myanmar as a possible destination for holiday seekers the region will only continue to see sustained growth at least for another 3-5 years. Other regions have faired differently. Africa fell just short of Asia at 7.9% growth over 2015 The middle east dropped by 4% on arrivals over the region. Europe stays constant at 2% growth

Celebrating love in paradise....
T
he journey to finding love can be difficult to say the least. Providing the lovelorn a thouroughfare of options on how to gain love. For many these roads are confusing and navigated with feelings of not being in true control of the wheel of this vehicle trying to travel the highways and biways of love. To make matters worse media and society place such high expectations on each of us to find this love undescrible. This can leave the underachiever at a loss as he or she begins to initiate taking the bull by the horns at pursuing love. When he or she lays eyes on 'the one'; thus the race begins. The heart stopping, heavens bursting, angels singing, flashes of lightening pursuit to capture the heart of one amongst millions. The femme fatal and the smooth operator alike begin to navigate through the plethora of emotions and self instilled protocols they believe will help them to captivate and capture the heart of this very special 'one'; all in the name of love. However, so true is the phrase, “Love is blind�. So often times men and women alike find themselves disillusioned, distrested, distracted and even disgusted at their attempts. They cannot understand why their plans and strategies are failing on every front. In a short amount of time they realize that they've created the making of a head on collition on a course set out for disaster. Let's take a look at a few reasons why many find themselves stranded on the highway of love....

* Love at first sight You will hear this phrase coined often. “It was love at first sight�. As romantic as this may sound this is often times very far from the truth. Many people begin to proclaim their love towards one another without being mindful that the word love carrys a lot of weight. When tossed around flippently many hearts have been broken when the love was tested and found that it went far beyond sight. Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder we must also undertand that beauty is only skin deep. Once relationships become more intimate the inside of these individuals quickly becomes the greater desire than a beautiful appearance or handsome stature. Be careful of allowing shortsightedness to leave you blindsided. * Pick me, pick me - Many times when two people come together one of these two parties is in an unhealthy need of love and attention and not so willing to extend mutual affections. This is discovered as situations and circumstances begin to arise within the relationship. You may find one person may appear more needy than the other. This will put great strain on the relationship and often times these people uncommit to what they said they would commit to long term. * Two for one special - This one can be a huge deal breaker as well as an emotional trauma that many never recover from. Being divided in your mind and affections for more than one person at a time can devistate and destroy. Instead of taking the time to really getting to know one individual you may find yourself wanting to play the field a bit to ensure you've met the right one. The disadvantage of this is that you may not allow yourself the proper time to give 100% of your time and attention to someone who may be the perfect one. Yet you were distracted by another individual. Many times this comes from one party actually being fearful of not experiencing love at all so they settle for any love. If you choose to take this route you should do so with the understanding that you can do many things good but you can only do one thing great. Wouldn't you want to consider this when it comes to relationships? Would you like to be placed in the second seat at his/her hearts table or in the first seat where there is a fiesta of love awaiting? Consider this; it may save your relationship. * Take a stand- Plain and simple; a one night stand is not love nor does it help you define relationships that are build on longevity and commitment.

Head over heals in love- The pursuit of love can be exciting and very fulfilling even with its challenges. Both men and woman stereotypically know fairly soon if they've met their soulmate. Being head over heals in love for these people is longlasting and stands the test of time. Law and order- Married people are known to live longer, face challenges as a team, have bettter health and finances. Overall being married provides life lessons that only marriage can offer. It's worth it to let those wedding bells toll. Til' death do us part- These relationships are at the top of the most admired relationships between a husband and wife. Both the man and the woman have counted the costs, overlooked shortcomings, loved unconditionally and have endured the trials that marriage can bring into a life of two souls becoming one. Always and forever- There is much to be said about a man or a woman who fight for their relationship. When challenges arise, when misscommunication wants to tear at the relationship, these inviduals choose to push and work towards unity and reconcilliation. They are the ones that create ways to love their life partner, ways to bless and ensure this person to have a wonderful life and a healthy relationship; always and forever. You can truly find and experience love in paradise. Know that although love comes free, there is a price to pay. The price of patience, kindness, not envious nor boastful, proud or easily angered. FROM GRIEF TO GREATNESS In 2004 Elizabeth Zana lost her daughter to the devastating tsunami which ripped through the Indian ocean, this is her story of how she turned her loss into an opportunity to help those in need.
I
t was a quiet morning everyone was sleeping off the Christmas celebration from the day before, when just off the coast of Northern Sumatra 2 tectonic plates thousands of feet below the sea were about to collide. An event to this magnitude this has not happened in modern history as we know it, the world enjoyed a relative tsunami free period in our history so the warning system was not in place, the public knowledge of what to look for was not readily taught. When the two tectonic plates struck together they caused a massive upheaval displacing millions of cubic meters of water, with no place to go this water rippled out across the Indian ocean to destinations such as Sir Lanka, Phuket, Khao Lak, Indonesia and Koh Phi Phi. In a good number of these places relaxing tourists sat taking in the sun on their holiday in tropical paradise. The devastation of the tsunami was unparalleled, over 250,000 lives were lost, many more homes were destroyed and whole towns were wiped off the face of the earth. Elizabeth’s daughter Natasha Zana was unfortunately on Koh Phi Phi when the wave hit the areas most famous destination. The entire population on Koh Phi Phi was struck unaware and many were swept out to sea. Upon receipt of the news of the devastation Elizabeth tried frantically to get in touch with her daughter. In English we have a word for a husband who looses wide, and vice versa. We also have a word for a child who looses it’s parent, but there is a void in our language for a parent who loses a child. Maybe this is because the feeling is so immense, so overwhelming that we just don’t want to talk about this situation.

Elizabeth was faced with such a situation in 2004, overwhelmed and lost she had no where to turn and support from her friends and husband was essential to her survival through those difficult times. Natasha had always been a person of great generosity, a person who could not stop to give to those less fortunate, whether it be animals in our environment or children with few opportunities available to them, Natasha was always put those who needed the help most first. After coming to Thailand and seeing first the devastation, the loss and fear and feeling of general despair Elizabeth decided to do something to help those in need. Living a dream of her daughters, to help those less fortunate, Elizabeth was able to keep her daughters spirit and will alive and well by giving to those that needed it most. By asking her friends and family in France to support her in an endeavour to open a school for children orphaned by the devastating tsunami Elizabeth took the first step towards changing lives. At first it was a difficult process, finding, meeting with and talking with so many people constantly being reminded of the horror and destruction she witnessed when she came to southern Thailand. Her heart is what kept her going and after months of talking and meeting she finally had enough funds to allow her to open a foundation NAT (due in part to her daughters name Natasha). The foundations goal was simple, to found a school and open the doors to children who were orphaned during the tsunami, to give them the chance to go to school and develop their future as a normal child would.

SHE SETTLED IN KRABI BECAUSE SHE MADE A FRIEND WHO TOLD HER ABOUT A RURAL SCHOOL WHICH WAS SCHEDULED TO BE SHUT DOWN DUE TO LACK OF GOVERNMENT FUNDING. THIS WAS HER CHANCE, SHE MET WITH THE SCHOOL’S MANAGEMENT TEAM AND OFFERED HER ASSISTANCE. The school was in a most dismal state, buildings needed to be repainted, the field needed weeding and the grass cut with the equipment; desks, chairs, books and so on all needed to be replaced, the school needed a lot of work but this is exactly the place Elizabeth was looking for. After many days of work Elizabeth and some of her supporters opened the doors once again to a fortunate 12 students, not the school can barely fir the 200+ students over 12 grades it is home to. In another life Elizabeth was a ballet dancer, traveling throughout the world and performing in many cities. Given her background it was only natural she would try to teach the students the arts. Music, painting, sculpture and of course dance were some of the subjects she wanted to offer her students. Since then she has built the music program from a dismal few broken drums and brass instruments to a larger, almost orchestra and most of all she has given the children inspiration to strive for something better in life, to not be afraid of trying different things and learning new things. Also wanting to broaden the minds of the children Elizabeth has established a working relationship between her NAT school as well as a number of other foreign schools. These partner schools are located throughout South East Asia, from Cambodia, Vietnam to Malaysia and even Singapore. Elizabeth has given the students at NAT an opportunity to talk in real time over skype to other students in foreign classrooms. To engage in question and answering sessions giving the students at NAT a taste of how outside children live their lives. NAT Foundation has been operating since 2005, and now they help children who are not only orphans from the tsunami but also from other circumstances. Now with over 150 students NAT has become a part of the community drawing such faces as the French Ambassador, the Governor of Krabi and many more all to show their support for Elizabeth and her work. NAT has only in the past few years started receiving and assistance from the Thai government, up until then is is solely funded by the generosity of everyday people like you and me who want to help. It had always been important for Natasha to help those in need, to give when nobody else would, to help when she didn’t have to, and in her daughters memory Elizabeth has lived on by following the directions of her daughters spirit. Krabi’s coastline spreads over 300 kilometers, making it a great place to find new beaches and get wet while exploring the underwater paradise that surrounds us. If you prefer to go a little deeper and stay longer, you can try SCUBA diving. The entire bay area is quite shallow with most diving locations less than 30 meters in depth. The life underwater is rich and incredibly diverse, with hundreds of different fish, corals and mammals to discover. There are blacktop reef sharks, leopard sharks, numerous parrot fish, pipe fish, nudibranchs and of course the friendly clown fish (or more commonly known as nemo fish).
The underwater world is rich in life, but it is up to us to help preserve it for future generations, so please be considerate with your trash whether you are on a boat or on a beach and always look for a trash bin to dispose of your waste. Thank you!

A day to celebrate LOVE – what a brilliant concept!!! February 14 is the day that many people in the world celebrate the most powerful thing in existence – Love!
As we enjoy this holiday devoted to love – we might wonder why we have a holiday that people everywhere stop and take time to say “I LOVE YOU!” How did such a wonderful concept come about? We are so fortunate to have Valentine's Day, but where did it come from? Historically, there is no definite answer to this question, but it appears that the story began in ancient Rome. Emperor Claudius II, who ruled in the 3rd Century AD, was an ambitious Roman leader who sent soldiers away to war for years at a time. Seeing how unhappy these soldiers were about leaving their wives and families for such long periods of time, Claudius decided the solution would be to outlaw marriage. T h e holiday was not generally celebrated however, until the 13th century, and by the 15th century, the tradition of exchanging Valentine greetings began. By the 17th century, the tradition of exchanging cards or letters with those of romantic interest took firm hold. In Europe, Saint Valentine’s Keys are given to lovers as a request to “unlock my heart.

A kind priest named “Father Valentine” defied the emperor and secretly married many young lovers. He was eventually caught, arrested and sentenced to death. In his time in jail, it is said that many of the couples that he had married, would visit him, bringing notes and flowers in gratitude for what he had done. The daughter of his jailer was ill and it is said that Father Valentine healed her and then fell in love with her. On the day of his execution (February 14) he sent her a note and signed it: “From Your Valentine”. In the 5th Century AD, in an effort to Christianize the holiday and to honor the canonized priest, Pope Gelasius officially designated February 14 as St. Valentines Day.
In the 1840’s in America, hand-written Valentine cards gave way to a new technology of mass-produced greeting cards. These Valentines Day cards were an instant hit and they have since become a major consumer product. Today, annually in America, more than 1 billion valentine cards are sold, and close to $20 Billion total is spent celebrating the holiday of love. Valentines Day is now one of the biggest consumer holidays in the USA for restaurants, confectioners, florists and even jewelers. Many engagements commence on Valentines Day as well – an average of 6 million couples! It is nice to see how popular Valentines Day has become, and the best thing is the growing worldwide appreciation for expressing love. A
s a young child Khun Nit would spend his days helping his father on his boat, fishing for all types of sealife; tuna, squid, crabs, shrimp and anything else that was in season. His mother would work in various rubber plantations cutting the trees’ lower sections and extracting the sap which would be processed into commercial rubber. His life was simple but sweet, going to school and helping his father in his free time. When Khun Nit turned 12 his mother came down with a rare form of cancer which was caused by various chemicals used on the rubber plantations. She passed after her battle with the disease and left his father to care for Khun Nit and his other siblings alone. Loosing his wife completely devastated Khun Nit’s father and left him unable to function in a normal fashion anymore, slowly Khun Nit’s life became more and more isolated. His siblings left the house in search of a better life, his father was unable to care for Khun Nit the way he used to and therefore Khun Nit was forced to leave home and find a new life for himself. His home province was Satun and is located about 200 kilometres from Krabi province. Receiving a message from a childhood friend that there was a restaurant in Krabi where he could work was all he needed. He booked a bus ticket and came to Krabi to meet with the restaurant owner and discuss options for starting work.
Upon seeing a young 13 year old Thai boy who could not speak any English come into his restaurant the restaurant owner was not highly impressed and enthusiastic about hiring him. After their conversation thought the restaurant owner saw something in Khun Nit. The restaurant owner sent him to another restaurant located on the beaches of Kantiang Bay in Koh Lanta. He was sent to the famous Same Same but Different restaurant with one piece of advice; find a foreign person who can speak English and learn from them. Soon after arriving in Koh Lanta Khun Nit was fortunate enough to meet a young woman who befriended him and agreed to help Khun Nit learn English. Lucky for Khun Nit this benevolent woman had with her a few English books so Khun Nit and her spared no time. In-between shifts they would sit at the restaurant go over sentences in the book and practice pronunciation. Sure enough in only a short while Khun Nit had enough of a vocabulary that he could begin having simple conversations with patrons. He continued practicing and within a few years he was a master of the language, being the go-to server at the restaurant for all foreign occupied tables. February| 2017

After his arrival at Same Same but Different Khun Nit was given shelter, a salary, friends and the opportunity to learn but he still felt inside a desire to find some outlet for his personal expression. A place where he could create something new, something unique and something that was his own creation. Often he would see a fellow colleague combing the beach for driftwood and then carving it into unique figures and designs creating some great artwork. He thought he could do the same. His enthusiasm started like many hobbies do for many of us, through trial and error. Finding a piece of saturated bamboo and carving an elongated droopy face in the side of it was a great way for Khun Nit to get comfortable with the tools and to start his journey in finding his own style. His style is something unknown as his talents and ideas are limitless, Khun Nit tells us “I always like to create more, to try new things, to challenge myself to recycle something into art�. Since his journey began into his new life Khun Nit has experienced changes and had many opportunities to better his life. One of these changes was his discovery of wood carving, where he had the creative freedom to make what he envisioned and what he wanted. Starting out his carvings were not sold in any shop just placed around Same Same but Different restaurant and patrons when they saw something they liked they could ask Khun Nit to make them something similar or something unique. His prices started low because of his inexperience and his lack of knowledge of the going rates but it allowed for patrons to get great work at a very affordable price and kept Khun Nit happy as he

always had something to create and work on. After his mastery of the art and the English language, the owner of both restaurants offered Khun Nit a position at the famous and highly revered Ruen Mai restaurant, where he would be creating artwork for the restaurant, running tables and also interacting with the foreign cliental frequenting the restaurant. Once again he was presented with the opportunity to challenge himself and learn something new as the restaurant owner wanted more unique creations to decorate the restaurant with. Khun Nit came up with a wonderful bamboo woven light covering, a little nervous if the restaurant owner would like the design he was rather shy, but the owner loved it and asked for more only they should all be different designs and shapes. This new creation allowed for him to use natural material, weave every strand together and create shapes from everyday life. Octopus, fish, jellyfish or just a simple ball, they were all shapes and creations available to Khun Nit and he made them all. Within no time Khun Nit earned himself a right to take a front row seat at Ruen Mai as he was a jack of all trades, decorating, designing, and of course serving tables were his daily tasks. Pathamon graduated in 1990 with a BA in Home Economics from Rajamangala Institute of Technology in Bangkok and has since taught carving classes in Germany and in Thailand. The origins of Thai fruit and vegetable carving date back to the Loi Krathong festivals of the 14th century during the Sukothai era. It is said that in the year 1364 one of King Phra Ruang's servants wanted to create a unique decoration for her raft. She therefore carved a flower and a bird from a melon for that purpose. The king was
so impressed by the elegance and beauty of the carving that he decreed that every woman should learn this new art. Throughout the centuries fruit and vegetable carving is enjoyed in changing popularity, sometimes the art seems to be almost disappearing and then at other times it is a favourite pastime even practiced by kings. At present, the basics of this art are taught in Thailand in primary and secondary schools as well as in optional courses at some Universities, mainly as an effort to raise the interest of young Thais for their cultural heritage. At class, you can choose three different course: foundation course, advance and full day course. In the foundation course you will start with the easiest fruits, then move onto vegetables and garnish designs. You will learn the proper handling of the two most important carving knives and a number of easy and fast to do everyday garnish designs, such as leaves and simple "blossoms" that can be combined to create stunning plate decorations. In the advanced course you will carve more complex and intricate patterns, such as blossom designs from pumpkins and patterns on watermelon or pumpkin centrepieces.
The full day course will give you the foundation course in the morning, you will go over all the basic techniques and produce some simple but effective designs. In the afternoon, you will move on to some more complex centrepiece creations. By the end of the day you will have created an entire dinner party display. rabi has long since been a great destination throughout the world for climbers due to its dramatic cliffs and natural scenery which surrounds every mountain. It’s a beautiful place and offers easy and challenging climbs a like so all levels of climbers can find challenge here.

Rock climbing in Krabi began on Railay peninsula as it offers some of the most stunning views in the region. Many of the routes actually extend out over the ocean offering climbings the option to fall back into the sea, referred to locally as deep water soloing. Among other things Railay has been a great place for climbers to come and experience the sensation of pushing themselves and exploring absolute beauty for decades now.
Since the first bolt was planted climbers came from all around the globe, climbing magazines descending on the cliffs, guide books mapped the area and more and more came. Now it’s world renowned and because of this it’s sometimes rather busy on the cliffs, and although the view and scenery throughout Railay are truly breathtaking, sometimes climbers are searching for that new route, the unknown line where they can just climb in silence with their partner.

LAST MONTH WE EXPERIENCED JUST THAT. A team of local climbers has taken to bolting new routes for climbers, giving tourists and locals alike options when it comes to choosing where to climb, their newest cliff which has been bolted features over 70 routes to choose from. With rock climbing the tendency has always been to find a great place where the bolts are good, the routes are well known, the guides have all climbed each spot a few dozen times (if not a hundred times), and what is wrong with that? Rock climbing although one of the safest sports on the planet has an appearance on the outside of being dangerous, you want someone to guide who knows what they are doing, is well versed in the location and can give you tips and advice on grips and holds. that’s been the case throughout Krabi for some time now, but it’s slowly shifting, more and more climbers are searching for new outlets to test their strength on, to push the limits for themselves and in general just to discover new places to climb. The new Mountains of Chong Plee offer just that, a place to challenge yourself but in a relative private and secluded area. The rock face offers a range of difficulties starting from the more simple 4 and 5A routes to the most complicated 7C. All of the routes are within 100 meters of one another so you can try you fingers on more challenging routes without driving or travelling to whole new location.
Just 10 minutes outside Ao Nang in the quiet local village of Chong Plee is the first of such cliffs that has been prepared for climbing. There is a bungalow resort located on Chong Plee soi 6 just next to the new mountain called Spirit Mountain climbers camp at the bungalows relax in total seclusion and then spend the days climbing on the huge rockface. Rooms can be rented there for a small fee starting at only 500THB/night, which offer the basics needed, comfortable privacy and generally surrounded by a great group of friendly climbers who are open to share their experiences on the rocks. When the sun comes up from it’s nightly slumber and you get outside the rocks are only 50 meters from the bungalows front doors making it easy to be first on the cliffs early in the morning. The resort Spirit Mountain climbers camp and bungalow is simple but the resorts manager Romano does a great job making you feel like family and right at home. The community of climbers which diverge on this resort from all around the world is vast yet small as they all share the same passion and can relate easily on many levels because of this. Overall a great place to come, relax and take in the beauty of the mountain. EXOTIC FRUITS OF THAILAND BY LINSEY HURLEY AND PAMELA BENJASIRICHAI A VISIT TO THAILAND ISN’T COMPLETE WITHOUT EXPERIENCING SOME OF THE FOODS HERE. THE TROPICAL FRUITS ARE ABUNDANT, DELICIOUS AND FASCINATING! WHILE YOU ARE HERE, BE ADVENTUROUS AND GIVE SOME OF THEM A TRY!
SAPODILLA (LA-MUT) This fruit looks like a large brown plum. The Thai way is to peel it with a sharp knife directed away from you and with the index finger just in front of the blade, guiding it along. You peel the fruit and then cut it through the middle in a zigzag fashion, for display. Lamut has a subtle flavor that isn’t particularly sweet, and yet seems to taste like brown sugar – if that makes any sense - It’s delicate and delicious!
GUAVA (FARANG) Looks like a bumpy/wrinkled green apple. Cutting guava is very pretty. Slice ½ way into it, wedge-like, and then slice all around the guava this way. We pulled out the wedges and ate them this way. This doesn’t taste like the Hawaiian fruit. Hawaiian guava fruits (called strawberry guava) are pink and sweeter. These were somewhat bland, crunchy and starchy – a little pear-like.
ROSE APPLE (CHOM-POO) - This looks like a cross between a thin red pepper and an apple. Cut them into lengthwise slices and eat the thin pieces. These are delicious – sweet and crunchy. They are also called Bell or Mountain Apples.
DRAGON FRUIT (GAO MUNG GORN)This is probably the most dramatic-looking of all the Thai fruits, and the outside appearance gives NO indicator of the inside appearance at all! The fruit is a bright pink oblong shape with pointed green leaves springing out from all sides – hence the name, as it DOES look a little dragon-like. Cutting it open down the middle of the fruit will display a white center, filled with tiny black dots. To eat this fruit, scoop out the filling with a spoon. This fruit is moist, sweet, crunchy and delicious! When picking out dragon fruit, “the redder the better” for ripeness!

JACKFRUIT (KHANOON) This is a fascinating fruit that comes in a huge spindly ball. Opening it up, you can pull out separate pods, which are around 3” long. These pods have large seeds inside that can be peeled, boiled and eaten with salt. The flesh of the fruit has a pungent taste and smell, somewhat crunchy and a little sour/starchy feel to it. Sometimes they are very sweet, and other times they are pretty bland.

MANGOSTEIN (MANG-KUT) Mangosteen is a bizarre looking fruit with a round, deep purple shell. It has flavorful white flesh that is eaten in sections. This has a delicious, distinctive flavor that is also wonderful for juices. Mangostein is becoming better known globally for it’s remarkable healing properties.
DURIAN (TU-RIAN) is one of the most bizarre fruits on earth. It is a rich, unique tasting fruit, but to some, it is a putrid-smelling, lousy excuse for a food. It has an extremely strong and unpleasant aroma, as well as a deadly look. Trying this fruit is a step into another world. Durian is quite expensive and due to it’s powerfully imposing smell; it is actually banned from many hotels, busses and planes.
LONGAN (LAM-YAI) look like big brown grapes on a branch. They have a thin but hard shell that is easy to break open. The flesh is clear and very sweet with a pit inside. These are delicious but don’t eat too many at one time, as you can get cold sores or even a fever.
LYCHEE (LINJEE) Covered by a red, roughly textured rind that is inedible but easily removed, the inside of a lychee consists of a layer of sweet, translucent white flesh with a grape-like texture. The centre contains a single glossy brown nut-like seed that should not be eaten.

RAMBUTAN (NGOR) The name is derived from the Malay word, rambut, meaning hair, which is a perfect name. The fuzzy, colorful covering of this fruit is unforgettable. Peeling this dramatic covering away reveals a firm, white, translucent flesh. It tastes like a sweet version of a pear, and is a lovely centerpiece for any dinner table.

ra ined from a young age and often thrown into their first fight at an age of 10 these boys are battle hardened well before they reach puberty.
There are many traditions in the training of the young fighters to become battled warriors, many of these are diet based but the most well known is that ancient practice of kicking banana trees. These young warriors once were trained to increase the size of their tibia and fibula by causing micro fractures in the bones which would later calcify and actually grow in diameter. Once this process has been practiced for years the fighters kicks are stronger and more destructive. In ancient times fighters were instructed to kick banana tree trunks, in modern times fighters use regular punching bags (which sometimes can be more dense than banana trees). Sitting on the edge of the ring watching two warriors throw punches, kicks, elbows and knees wildly at one another a certain respect fills your body as this sport is unlike other martial arts, it resembles the body of kickboxing yet it has a certain “bare knuckle� feeling to it. Humid sweat and bursts of blood erupt from the malee filling the air as punches land their marks and knees split unprotected ribs, a primal order of brauns and brains fills the air. From the edge of the ring you will notice a focus and dedication in the fighters, they seem to see nothing but each other, the roar of the crowd, the bright lights shining down on the ring, the announcements on the fight cutting through the air, nothing matters to these warriors other than each other. The experience of seeing a real Muay
Thai fight is unlike anything you have ever seen, inside the well trodden arena there is gambling, screaming, beer drinking, comfortable sofas that surround the immediate perimeter of the ring and best of all plenty of fights. Order a beer from the vending booth, take a seat ringside and kick off your shoes take in a breath of the hot, excited air, the ensuing battles are to begin shortly. The Ao Nang Krabi Stadium can house a maximum of 2,000 visitors at any single fight, but usually spectator numbers are limited to only 100-200 so there is plenty of space to move around and see the fight from the perfect vantage point. Fights are weekly on Monday and Friday nights and start at 9pm. With the bigger brother and sister to Krabi being Phuket and Koh Samui one can see the potential for Krabi and where it can go if given the space and permission. Krabi still has yet to let itself run as its full fledged neighbours but it has seen it’s fare share of growth over the past 10 years. and it seems like the growth has only just started. Hotels are shooting up in every plot of vacant land you can find but they all seem to be packed as soon as they open their doors. Restaurants are constantly opening new venues and sister branches, growing and expending their reach. Overall Krabi is booming and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop anytime soon.
Although the main beach front plots throughout Krabi are sporting some price tags many of us cannot stomach but there are a great number of land plots slightly removed form the beachfront and which offer stunning views and great investment opportunities. As a foreigner, Thailand tries to restrict foreigners directly owning land outright, (which is a good thing if you ask me). There is not really an option for foreigners to outright have their name on title land deeds, instead they must only rent the land from a Thai national for a period of 30 years (which can be renewed 2 additional times, giving a lease term of 90 years). There is another option and they is to set up a company which has a 51% majority of Thai shareholders, but foreigners can still be appointed to being the companies director and therefore having the vast majority of the power and direction of the company. Land can be purchased under a company such as this.

THE SUNSET ISLAND Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

an Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks, and guest houses that cater to newcomers. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast – hence it’s often referred to as “The Sunset Island” – and can be reached by road. Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao, and Phra Ae have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin, and Ba Kan Tiang, and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and are less crowded for swimming. Ba Kantiang Bay has spectacular crystal-clear seawater, soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy. It’s the picture of a postcard, symbolizing a luxe hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.

Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island. Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang, and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It’s a picturesque place dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen still dock their longtail boats and make for an authentic snapshot of local life.

UNPLUG IN KOHJUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. Now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators found at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum have their own family run character, ranging from the backpackers’ paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai, and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth

weaving and painting or “batik” as it is known here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas, and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face west, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the
island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat.
Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is quite an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare – it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help. We recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with our readers. There are two ways to get to Koh Jum by passing ferry or longtail boat. The ferries leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, and both stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore at Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum. This was our favorite of the two methods of travel. If you are driving, it takes about one hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” – the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat. They are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. The pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too,” the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as if they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70 baht fare, and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.
