AO NANG BEACH at 20km from Krabi Town is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches; a long stretch of white sand with limestone karsts as a backdrop. All of your accommodation, shopping and service needs are found here. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and on weekends with picnics. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach. KLONG MUANG BEACH is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature. RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, and rocky islands emerging from the sea. Both beaches are known the world over for their majestic climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15-minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing or cliff jumping course (yes, into the sea!), hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out.

KOH LANTA BEACHES have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. TUBKAEK BEACH Another real place to hide away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi. KOH PODA This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you seem from Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters. CHICKEN ISLAND This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when passing Chicken Island (Koh Chicken) you can catch a glimpse of a chickens neck and head, some would argue more like that of a turkey but it’s up to you. You know those postcards with people walking on a sandy isthmus that connects to another island? Yep, here the second island is Koh Tub and is only accessible at low tide. THE KOH HONG This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlight of Krabi province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many a hidden caves and lagoons make it perfect for snorkeling and exploration. Make sure you stop at Lading island after Koh Hong as it is much less visited and sports a blend of both lush jungle and tropical waters. KOH PHI PHI Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the island that Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming “The beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay.
KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace, and recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves. KOH LANTA the developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset viewing spots , heaps of activities, and glimpses into sea gypsy life, is where you will meet nature and tradition. It’s also a National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote Koh Rok. LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million yearold seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools that you can swim in. TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. HOT SPRINGS Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis that melt away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

MINISTER DAPONG ASKED TO RECONSIDER PLAN TO CHOP DOWN ALL RUBBER TREES IN SEIZED PLANTATIONS Small-scale rubber plantation owners will plead with Natural Resources and Environment Minister Dapong Rattanasuwan to review the ministry’s plan to chop down all rubber trees from rubber plantations which have encroached on forest reserves. The ministry has wrestled back 1.5 million rai of rubber plantations from encroachers out of a total of 4.4 million rai which have encroached on forest reserves and an addition of 1.6 million rai in watershed areas. It plans to chop down all rubber trees in 1.5 million rai within two years. Mr UthaI Sornlaksap, president of Farmers Federation of Thailand, said that if all the rubber trees are felled, about 50,000 household of rubber planters would be hard hit because they would be deprived of a means to make a living.
He claimed that many of them had been settling in the forest reserves and transforming the land into rubber plantations even before they were declared forest reserves or watershed areas.

On June 29th a 5 million bronze sculpture of a sailfish was erected at Ao Nang on the beach front. According to Ao Nang Tambon Administration Organization (OrBorTor) President, Pankum Kittithonkul, it has been planed to build a sculpture in Ao Nang for about a decade but it was a real issue to find the funds in the budget to do so. The Organization wanted to mark the occasion through a unique landmark that would represent Ao Nang’s Community and show everyone how important the environment is to Krabi. Mr Pankum explained that the sailfish commemorates an event that happened 10 years ago when a fisherman caught an enormous number of the iconic marine animal near Koh Phi Phi. This landmark’s purpose is also to gather together locals and tourists and make them stop by to take photos, enjoy the view and have some fun. It is a great place for couples or families to spend time. Ao Nang OrBorTor has also made plans to erect a seashell sculpture in the near future, but has no concrete date for its completion.

Many countries issued warnings against non-essential travel to Thailand. That is the reason why the ruling junta, which took power last May, has been trying to promote tourism – which accounts for around a tenth of the economy – in order to boost sagging economic growth. Tour operators in the « Land of Smiles » say they have no choice but to grin and bear it. Tourism accounts for nearly 10 percent of the country’s economic output and Chinese holidaymakers are Thailand’s largest group of overseas visitors. Thailand is one of China’s largest outbound tourism destinations. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, around 4.6 million Chinese tourists arrived in Thailand in 2014, a minor decrease from the previous year due to political instability. Thai authorities even issued an etiquette manuals for Chinese tourists ahead of an influx of visitors expected. The manuals, prepared by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, list some recommended behaviors such as not touching paintings, avoiding using public property as lavatories, and encouraging proper driving. In August 2014, Thailand announced a three month visa fee exemption to stimulate Chinese tourism, and Thai authorities have attended roadshows in major Chinese cities to advertise tour routes and travel products. The Kasikorn Research Center estimates the number of arrivals to soar by 13.5 % to 5.25 million in 2015 as China and Thailand commemorate the 40th anniversary of their ties.

A local favorite The U&P Bakery has become a staple in the past years since its founding. Now the owner gets up close and personal with Krabi Magazine letting us in on some old secrets to her family businesses history, future and some moments in between. Pojanee Sriveerachai or as she is more commonly known Khun Laan moved to Krabi from Phuket some 2 years ago to purchase the U&P Bakery from her sister and keep the business inside the family.

Krabi Magazine: What year did your sister open the U&P Bakery? Khun Laan: U&P Bakery first opened its doors in 2007 it was founded by my sister Supa Autakitmongkol as she has as strong passion for baking and everything related to baking. After a number of years working long hours my sister wanted to relax a little so she offered to sell the business to me. I lived in Phuket at the time, I knew Krabi was much more quiet than Phuket and I was looking for a change so I decided to move to Krabi and purchase the business. Krabi Magazine: before you took over the business from your sister did you have any baking experience? Khun Laan: I baked occasionally at home for my family but nothing to the commercial extent to which U&P Bakery is operating to. It has been a huge amount for me to learn but it has been a great and interesting journey, I have learned from the mistakes I have made but have grown our business in many ways. It has been a great experience for me. Krabi Magazine: Can you tell us some of the changes you have made ? Khun Laan: I have changed a locals supplier and now we purchase fresh red and green lettuce from a local hydroponic producer, I have also expanded the distribution coverage we have and distribute to many new hotels in Krabi. Krabi Magazine: Can you tell us some of the hotels you distribute to ? Krabi Magazine: What is your favorite item to bake here? Khun Laan: I absolutely love baking croissants, I think my love for this item really shines through its quality as we have gone from croissants being popular but not selling more than 500/day. Now we currently produce and sell over 1,200 croissants a day in high season. There is a lot that goes into making them but I love the extra steps, they allow for that much extra love and energy to be put into the food. Krabi Magazine: You said you want to keep the business in the family, so does that mean you have some family here helping? Khun Laan: My son comes to help time to time, my husband works in Phuket and my other daughter lives in China in a place called Guangzhou, she hopes to come back to Krabi in 2-3 years so until then I am mostly on my own. I would like for my children to take over the work but I understand if this is not what they want. On Saturday July 11th Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra organized a wine tasting from 5pm to 7pm to present Victoria Park wine from Australia. The aim of this fabulous event was to display this Australian wine, distributed by Jon Hyams an Australian wine professional who has been in the wine business for the past 30 years. Jon arrived in Thailand five years ago and hasn’t left since. He started distributing Victoria Park wine to Thai resorts three years ago. Victoria Park wine sources its fruit from the diverse grape growing regions of South Australia and is produced by the Free Run Juice Wine Company. A Barossa Valley based producer with access to many varied grape varieties. This produced is a nationally renowned brand with links to Australia’s oldest family owned winery, Yalumba. This wine tasting was the perfect opportunity to discover the three grape varietals of this Autralian wine. The 2013 Victoria Park Shiraz, the 2013 Victoria Park Chardonnay and the 2013 Victoria Park Sauvignon Blanc. Originally used to travel and help in farming practices, horses have been used for work and leisure for several thousands of years. Now Horseback riding is a very enjoyable practice and you can enjoy right here in Krabi.
Krabi Nature Horseriding is open daily from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, it is a short 5 minutes drive from Ao Nang, simply turn right at the 3-way junction going to Ao Nam Mao; in Ao Nam Mao at the roundabout take your second exit and go towards the fossil shell beach. approximately 2km after the Ao Nam Mao roundabout you will see a small sign on your right Krabi Nature Horseriding and an orange roadside stand, turn right down a dirt road and you will see the stables after 100 meters. The club has been operating for fourteen years now and offers many options for the avid rider to the first timer. You can choose between one hour trek, two hours trek, a half day trip or a whole day trip including riding along the beach, discovering the fossilshell beach, a fish farm and even learn to swim with the horses during high tide. The owner Khun Pan started his business with only one horse, afterwards he bought a mare; and the seed was planted. A few months later a foal was born, that was fourteen years ago; now he owns about twenty horses. He started his club from scratch and witnessed the birth of each horse he now owns. That is why he knows exactly which horse will suit you best according to your size and level. Krabi Nature Horseriding is home to about twenty healthy horses all taken care of by grooms. Riding one of their mares, Dollar, a 9 year old Thai/European cross breed while being escorted by Khun Pan and Magnum (his favorite horse) it was a fantastic ride on the beach with an amazing view on Poda and Chicken Islands as well as Railay. Khun Pan, who started riding 25 years ago, is a very passionate rider whose experience allows him to give some tips in order to have the correct posture and bind with your horse.
-As a rider you have to be kind to the horse even if you lead it you have to treat it with respect if you want it to be nice and obedient towards you -Your hills have to remain down, your head up and your fists still on the horse’s neck If you follow this advice you will certainly have yourself a great day of riding. The day after the ride along the beach, returning to Krabi Nature Horseriding at 9 am to watch the horses swim at the beach. Actually to better take in this activity it must be during high tide, it is amazing to see the horses enjoying swimming and cooling off in the sea. After their dip in the salt water, the grooms took the horses back to the club and gave them a shower to clean their hide from salt. If you want to discover this rewarding experiences in Krabi and return home with a head full of memories you just have to call Khun Pan and book a session. He will take care of picking you up from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. Please note that the club already has insurance and that the ride is free for children under four years old. EXOTIC FRUITS OF THAILAND A visit to Thailand isn’t complete without experiencing some of the foods here. The tropical fruits are abundant, delicious and fascinating! While you are here, be adventurous and give some of them a try!
DRAGON FRUIT (GAO MUNG GORN) This is probably the most dramatic-looking of all the Thai fruits, and the outside appearance gives NO indicator of the inside appearance at all! The fruit is a bright pink oblong shape with pointed green leaves springing out from all sides – hence the name, as it DOES look a little dragon-like. Cutting it open down the middle of the fruit will display a white center, filled with tiny black dots. To eat this fruit, scoop out the filling with a spoon. This fruit is moist, sweet, crunchy and delicious! When picking out dragon fruit, “the redder the better” for ripeness!

Looks like a bumpy/wrinkled green apple. Cutting guava is very pretty. Slice ½ way into it, wedge-like, and then slice all around the guava this way. We pulled out the wedges and ate them this way. This doesn’t taste like the Hawaiian fruit. Hawaiian guava fruits (called strawberry guava) are pink and sweeter. These were somewhat bland, crunchy and starchy – a little pear-like.
This looks like a cross between a thin red pepper and an apple. Cut them into lengthwise slices and eat the thin pieces. These are delicious – sweet and crunchy. They are also called Bell or Mountain Apples
This fruit looks like a large brown plum. The Thai way is to peel it with a sharp knife directed away from you and with the index finger just in front of the blade, guiding it along. You peel the fruit and then cut it through the middle in a zigzag fashion, for display. Lamut has a subtle flavor that isn’t particularly sweet, and yet seems to taste like brown sugar – if that makes any sense - It’s delicate and delicious!

This is a fascinating fruit that comes in a huge spindly ball. Opening it up, you can pull out separate pods, which are around 3” long. These pods have large seeds inside that can be peeled, boiled and eaten with salt. The flesh of the fruit has a pungent taste and smell, somewhat crunchy and a little sour/starchy feel to it. Sometimes they are very sweet, and other times they are pretty bland.
Look like big brown grapes on a branch. They have a thin but hard shell that is easy to break open. The flesh is clear and very sweet with a pit inside. These are delicious but don’t eat too many at one time, as you can get cold sores or even a fever.
Mangosteen is a bizarre looking fruit with a round, deep purple shell. It has flavorful white flesh that is eaten in sections. This has a delicious, distinctive flavor that is also wonderful for juices. Mangosteen is becoming better known globally for it’s remarkable healing properties.

Covered by a red, roughly textured rind that is inedible but easily removed, the inside of a lychee consists of a layer of sweet, translucent white flesh with a grape-like texture. The centre contains a single glossy brown nut-like seed that should not be eaten.
The name is derived from the Malay word, rambut, meaning hair, which is a perfect name. The fuzzy, colorful covering of this fruit is unforgettable. Peeling this dramatic covering away reveals a firm, white, translucent flesh. It tastes like a sweet version of a pear, and is a lovely centerpiece for any dinner table.
One of the most bizarre fruits on earth. It is a rich, unique tasting fruit, but to some, it is a putrid-smelling, lousy excuse for a food. It has an extremely strong and unpleasant aroma, as well as a deadly look. Trying this fruit is a step into another world. Durian is quite expensive and due to it’s powerfully imposing smell; it is actually banned from many hotels, busses and planes. August/September | 2015

EAT, PRAY AND LOVE IN KOH KLANG Koh Klang is on the west coast of southern Thailand, at the mouth of Krabi River in the Andaman Sea. It is the closest island to Krabi town, opposite the Krabi River. To reach Koh Klang from Krabi town head south along the riverside promenade a few hundred metres from Chao Fah pier and look for a small floating pier just past the marina in Thara Park. Boats run continually throughout the day and cost 20 baht per person, plus an extra 10 baht for a motorbike. From here or Chao Fah pier, you can also pay 50 baht for a private crossing. The island is connected only by longtail boats and crossings take as little as ten minutes. .

Translated as “Middle Island” in Thai, Koh Klang is located in Klong Prasong Sub District, which covers a total area of 26 Sq kilometers. The sub-district has four villages, three are located on Koh Klang island: Ban Koh Klang, Ban Klong Prasong and Ban Klong Kum and a forth village, Ban Bang Kanun is located on the mainland. Most visitors arrive in the northwest, at Tha-Lay pier, in the largest of Koh Klang’s three villages. A strip of white concrete shoots inland and then cuts south along the coastline, ending at Laem Kham in the far southeast. There are no cars on the island only a mix of Local Tuk Tuks, motorbikes and bicycles. The 6KM drive from one end of the island to the other takes about 15-20 minutes, so you can safely explore the island in a short day. Crossing with your personal motorbike will enable you to take in all the richness and authenticity of the island, luxuriant vegetation, goats and water buffalos grazing in the fields, families taking naps under their raised woody houses and big lizards darting across the road here and there. Koh Klang is home to nearly 5000 residents, with a rural landscape it is often hard to believe. 70% of the population are indigenous people of the island and 30% originated from Krabi and other districts of Krabi. The inhabitants on the island are 98% Muslim and 2% Buddhist. Islam’s traditional moral guidelines have not been relaxed here, including for travelers. The call to prayer can be heard all over the Island from each of the mosques, all of which serve for worship and gatherings. Although Koh Klang is only a five minute boat ride from Krabi town, the friendly Muslim families living here maintain a simple and modest life, which they are proud to share with visitors searching for an insight into authentic southern Thai culture. Signs posted throughout the island make this perfectly clear. Calm, quiet, traditional, Koh Klang is the antithesis of nearby touristic party spots. The community is tight-knit and everyone knows everyone else. Most families are fishermen, followed by rice farmers and coconut and banana farmers. Koh Klang offers great opportunities to cherish a simple life by the sea, pamper in natural peace, meet local people and observe traditional local life. The local people are involved in developing eco-tourism on the island with the help of the local government. Koh Klang is also a traditional fishing community where visitors can see the living relationship between locals and the ocean that surrounds them. Community members use ingenious, local methods to capture fish, crabs and shellfish. From the Tha-Hin pier you can take a long tail boat and sail along the Krabi river to the high seas to learn about Shallow Water Fishing. The fish nets are stuck to wooden planks and form a giant V-shaped trap in the seas. At the base of the V, there are dense nets in which the fish gets caught during the high tide. It is from these net traps that the local fishermen catch the fish using submerged baskets. Every time the fish basket is submerged, it brings up a huge quantity of fish. Because of pollution and over-exploitation, many varieties of fish are depleting. Despite this, there are still many fish that are available in abundance for example, Milkfish, Barramundi, Seabass etc. Koh Klang is famous for fresh seafood as it’s one of Krabi’s major seafood producers. Small fisherman trade their daily catch with many merchants on the island and mainland. August/September | 2015

This marine life survives thanks to the extensive mangrove forest that covers the entire island. Koh Klang’s mangrove constitutes an important part in the bio-diversity of the island’s eco system. They provide a safe, protected environment for juvenile fish to grow, before they head out to sea. There are only two places in Thailand where Sangyod (or Sang Yot) Rice are produced and these are Koh Klang and Pattalung. The canals in Koh Klang make it an ideal location for rice cultivation. Approximately 600 rai of land in the interior of the island are dedicated to rice farming. Sangyod Rice is a purple colored organic rice, having a very high fibre content. Its unique flavor is due to Koh Klang’s mixture of salt and fresh water. Traditionally, Sangyod rice is cooked during special occasions. In addition to producing a unique kind of rice, Koh Klang is also the place where the long tail boats or the traditional Hua Tong boats originated. They are now recognized as the symbol of Southern Thailand, in particular Krabi. These boats have become iconic on the beaches and islands throughout Southern Thailand, and often make great backdrops to photographs and postcards alike. The elongated “head” of the boat was designed to stand against the current while also acting as a marker for direction. If you are willing to try Koh Klang’s famous seafood, a string of restaurants floating along the northern canal raise their own fish. You can enjoy a very satisfying and reasonably priced seafood meal, simply pick your own fish or crab then order the cooking procedure; fried, steamed or grilled, and enjoy. You can also have some seafood salads or try out the clams and lemongrass broth that will definitely delight your

taste buds. The dining atmosphere is serene, with a view to mangroves absorbing the lapping of waves as passing local fishermen speed along or dock their boat at their stilted homes. Just like the restaurants, houses are made of wood and rest on stilts, there is one major difference though; they are raised over ground and not water. Evidence that there has been Tsunami or flooding damage in the area and now people are more prepared. Bicycles, colorful clothes being dried in the hot sun, scattered toys, pet cats and dogs snoozing in the cool shade, the area underneath each house narrates its own story. While our discovery of the island’s nooks and crannies was about to end and we were heading back to the pier we came across the local markets which lined the main street, it was full of small stalls and was predominantly managed by women selling vegetables, fruits, dry fish and different sauces in sealed transparent small plastic bags that seemed irresistible and tempting. Life in Koh Klang seems to be frozen in a different time period, far away from hustle and bustle of urban life just across the river. The island warmly welcome guests who come to learn and share in the local culture and way of life. RAMADAN FESTIVAL IN KRABI Ramadan is the Islamic holy month when all capable Muslims are expected to refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex until sundown. It is a month of peace and the time which the Koran was first sent down from heaven to the Prophet Mohammed. Participants strengthen and develop their connection to Allah by fasting during daylight hours, it is a form of worship. As soon as sunset has come and gone, the scene changes dramatically as everyone gathers together to indulge in a delicious feast, referred to as Iftar. Eating and celebrating often continues long into the evening.

amadan lasts for 29 to 30 days, depending on the sighting of the new moon. The dates for Ramadan are based on the Islamic lunar calendar and depend on the traditional sighting of the crescent moon by eye. Predicting the dates for Ramadan is impossible in advance; sometimes the dates even vary between Islamic countries. Spending the month of Ramadan in their country is normally among the habits of the Thai Muslims. Most travelers, overseas workers and even students who study abroad usually come back to spend the month of Ramadan with their families.

The food awaiting them at iftar (the end-of-day breaking of the fast) should be good, hearty, traditional Thai food that warms the soul and rewards the assiduous Muslim after his day of sacrifice. The Thai Muslims incline towards having dates, soup and large amounts of fruits during this month. After dark, the streets fill with people, food stalls, decorations, light displays and music. If you’ve never been in a Muslim area during Ramadan before, it is definitely an exciting adventure. Ramadan is more than just fasting. Thai Muslims are expected to purify their thoughts, and focus more on their religion. Those who fast should gain a better appreciation of the predicament of the poor and the destitute. They focus on
performing acts of generosity and kindness, by providing community services, buying gifts and taking time out to help those in need. One way you can get on board is by engaging in similar acts yourself. If you happen to know any locals, be sure to buy them presents and/or offer to help in any way you can. The end of the month of Ramadan is marked by Eid-ul-fitr. Eid is an Arabic word which means festivity and Fitr means “to break the fast”. The exact date of Eid-ul-fitr is not fixed and varies as it depends on the sighting of the moon. On this day of celebration, new moon is viewed and Thai Muslims wear new clothes, cook delicacies and visit their loved ones to greet them, with gifts and sweets.

or decades they have been making headlines in domestic and international media outlets, many flock to Thailand just to catch a glimpse of these interesting and diverse individuals. Well known throughout the globe as ladyboys, there are varying degrees of ladyboys, some with just some makeup, some with full on sex change operations, we’re after one question; What makes their acceptance so prevalent throughout the kingdom and not in other developed nations?
Long since has Thailand been synonymous with the word ‘freedom’, a place where you can do anything, dress how you like, be as you like, do as you like, now come to think of it this is not entirely true but on the surface the freedom in the air rings through loud and clear. This is what many of us assume is the reasoning why ladyboys in Thailand are so prevalent everywhere. Is there more Transexual people in Thailand than in other countries? One might ponder as Ladyboys seem to be everywhere Back in America cross-dressing or transsexual people are rarely seen, but does this mean there are more here than elsewhere? Is it simple that the general environment in Thailand is so much more welcoming towards the third gender as opposed to the more uptight environment such as America, Europe and Russia? Well there lies the answer. Thailand is a place of freedom, and yes the general environment is more open to the third gender but this is not the only reason that you will certainly see a ladyboy on the street, in a bar or maybe your hotel during just a short week trip to Thailand. Thailand opened its doors to foreign tourism in the 1960’s before this point ladyboys were a very unique part of society. Without the tourist desire for this new type of people to emerge they had little place in a society where at the time was heavily an agrarian one. With the influx of the foreign minds arriving to Thailand, a land shrouded in mystique they craved a strong appetite for more and more exotic. This new group of visitors in Thailand made it possible

for the Thai individuals with ladyboy tendencies to feel comfortable and find themselves a place in this new and evolving Thai society. As more and more individuals began to come out of the closet, dress and act as they wished, they gave more confidence to others wishing to do the same. This domino effect lasted for decades, now these unique and interesting individuals are wellknown throughout the globe for the great acts they will go to in order to change themselves into a beautiful woman.
“Sometimes you will be talking with an individual at a bar, restaurant or hotel and not even realize that the individual is actually (or at least was at one point) a man.” These individuals go to such amazing lengths to change their appearance and alter who they are. The easier and more simple versions of change involve the application of makeup, the next step will often lead to a dress of women’s clothes, the next step will be shaving legs and arms, taking estrogen hormones and finally full on sex changes which are performed in a number of locations throughout Thailand. As the demand increases for these dangerous and irreversible surgeries so does the price, currently a full sex change (only down south speaking) will cost you around 300,000THB.Then, in addition to the actual surgery one must endure the days and weeks of pain and adjustment to their new bodies, earning their regard in many peoples opinion as a massive sacrifice; this is another testament to the level some will go in order to get the body they desire. What drives these alluring individuals to go to such great extent to change who they are? Lucky for us we had the great chance to interview one of the leading members Khun Monkey and Khun Beau of the Blue Dragon Cabaret show located on the 3rd floor of Centerpoint in Ao Nang about this question. “The overwhelming open-mindedness of Thai people is one of the main reasons for ladyboys being so prolific throughout the Kingdom” tells the paid of Cabaret show workers. “That being said the main source of work and income for us is at the cabaret show in Ao Nang, visitors are almost exclusively foreign customers”, the pair continues. “For most of us we are not rich, we do not come from wealthy families, we must work for our money, we need a way to support ourselves and often in hotels, cabaret shows, bars and restaurants the main customers are foreigners, therefore without them we would have a more difficult time finding work and surviving in the lifestyle we do.” It shines new light on the subject of transgender and cross-dressing among cultures, for a country that has traditionally held the topic of sex as a taboo subject. It is the foreigner tourists coming to Thailand that has created a niche pocket for these individuals to feel free to express themselves in an alternative way. August/September | 2015

Ladyboys not only go to great lengths to appear different, they watch women in real life and in movies to learn their mannerisms and habits, they apply makeup and will generally go through a massive transformation on a daily basis. If one works for a few year on these skills they can and will begin to take on these mannerisms, speech habits and other womanly habits as they will become second nature and you will see less and less of the original man or boy. Quite often the transformation will begin at a very young age, often individuals will begin to play with and try on girls clothes, then they will hang around girls at school finding they prefer the company of girls to guys. Sometimes they will even begin taking female hormone pills around the age of 9 or 10. Up close and personal with The Managing Director of the new HOTEL MANAGEMENT company based here in the south of Thailand. KM: Hello Daniel, thank you for taking the time to talk with us today, we would like to give our readers a little information about you and your company so lets get started getting to know you better. KM: Where are you from? Daniel: I am from a small town in the South of Sweden, so I guess you could say I come from proud Viking stock. KM: What brought you to Thailand? and when was that? Daniel: I was head hunted from my job as a hotel GM in Luang Prabang, Laos by the owner of Beach Republic Residences & Beach Club on Koh Samui. That was back in 2010 so I have been living in Thailand for 5 years now. My wife is expecting our second child any day now, a little brother for our young daughter. KM: What lead you to start the Hotel Management Asia business? Daniel: In my job as hotel GM I met and talked to many hotel owners who were having a hard time finding management for their properties because they where “too small�. I saw a great demand for small to medium resorts/hotels in need of a more flexible approach to property management. The idea is to share the cost of sales, IT, marketing, accounting and management between a few selected high-end resorts/hotels so each owner can benefit from a complete and professional property management without the need to build up and pay for a whole team which is often too expensive for a resort with 15-20 pool villas for example. KM: What is your background with the hospitality business? Daniel: I started in the travel business working my way up. In the end, together with several of the best and most prestigious travel agents in the world I operated world tours aboard private jet but also exclusive tailor made programs to South Africa and Seychelles. I started to work in the hotel business about 10 years ago. Mainly because I thought it could be done better as I had been disappointed so many times with the short comings from 5 star independent hotels. My guests were sometimes paying 100.000+ USD per person for a private jet tour and some of these hotels couldn’t even get the basics right. KM: Who is Hotel Management Asia a business founded to serve?

Daniel: Yes, and this is one of our strong points. We can take over or build up any resort/hotel operation with our present team. We even have an up and running food and beverage brand Hook Restaurant and Bar concept that can be applied to any location along with the hotel operation. A complete solution for hospitality property management. KM: What are your plans for Hotel Management Asia in the next 10 years? Do you have big expansion plans?
Daniel: We are looking to connect with several types of Property Owners. Firstly the owner/investor who plans to take a back seat and let us manage their investment for them. Secondly, there are owners who are looking for the freedom to pursue new goals and projects and want a safe, professional team to take care of their property freeing them from the day to day operation. Thirdly, we have owners who want to get their property in perfect condition for sale by improving revenues and industry performance standards to show the resort as a turnkey operation for a potential buyer. KM: Why did you choose to open your business in Krabi and the south of Thailand?
Daniel: I really like this part of Thailand and living close to the sea is important to me. From a business point of view, I really believe in this area, especially Krabi. The natural beauty of Phang Nga and its islands such as Koh Yao Noi, Koh Yao Yai and Koh Jum to name just a few. There are so many great destinations in the world, Krabi is up there with them and has a great future on the map. KM: How many hotels do you have planned to be managing by the beginning of the 2016? Daniel: Happy customers is priority number one! I want to make sure all our customers get the attention they need so we will keep the “family” small at this point. We are looking to add one or maximum two customers/locations this year. We don’t want to rush things. We are building solid foundations to take the business forward, growing organically. We already have 2 resorts in our portfolio and this beautiful part of Thailand is the focus of our future plans. KM: Do you offer a completely turn key management service so hotel owners don’t have to do anything they don’t want to? Can you take care of everything A to Z with hotel management?

Daniel: I will not allow this company to grow too fast. Adding services and resorts will happen naturally as our reputation grows. I believe that our clients are our best source of referral, let the word go out. I want us to grow slowly and add services in the future, for example, a temporary GM to help independent hotel owners or family businesses to get things right. Especially if they feel that they haven’t got the full potential out of their property but still want to manage it by themselves. There are many hotel and restaurant owners in Thailand that have invested quite a lot of money, some have never been involved in hospitality before on any level. We can help give them a competitive edge. KM: What is it you like most about the hospitality business? Daniel: It feels great when you know you have a resort working like a Swiss clock and your guests are all having a wonderful time. For us in hospitality we have a big responsibility to make sure they get maximum value from their precious holiday time and money. The combination of being serious with a smile and giving great service beyond what’s expected is the core of hospitality. That is what motivates me. KM: I know that there are a number of other companies that offer management services to hotel owners, what makes your business different? Khun mai: Emerald symbolizes a few different things, firstly it is green the same color of trees and much of the nature we are surrounded by, therefore the color and energy of each of my projects under The Emerald Development Group should embody this green natural feel. Secondly Emerald’s are an esteemed previous stone and signify luxury and prestigue, another image and feeling I would like preset at our finished projects. Krabi magazine: Can you tell us a little about what is special about your building style? Khun Mai: Building has always been a passion of mine, but I don’t like to maximize the building area in terms of unit allotment. I have always tried to build condominiums with the clients needs in mind. What I mean by this is that I never like to over develop a project. I will build according to the land area which will leave the project owners with a comfortable amount of space to feel at home and not in a hotel. Krabi Magazine: Why did you choose to come to Ao Nang, as you have had such great success in Phuket? Khun Mai: I have been building in Phuket for some time now but in Phuket what I can offer my

clients is limited quite simply to Phuket. I have a number of clients that come to me and want to buy a condominium in a quiet and calm area and while Phuket does offer a number of residential locations which give this option the province of Phuket as a whole is very developed. I want to be able to offer people options for where they would like to purchase their own property, for instance, a project in a more natural surrounding while still in a good location for nightlife, restaurants and activities. Krabi is the perfect location as it is a quickly growing area of Thailand and shows great potential in the upcoming years to continue its upward trend in growth. Buyers at our new project, The Emerald Ao Nang can enjoy a great investment choice while having their condominium in a location that allows for easy access to quiet and calm beaches, intimate hot springs and a variety of viewpoints and nature hikes without a huge number of crowds. We have a great track renting our projects in Phuket and to make our situation even better in Ao Nang we are actually working with the Krabi White Sands Resort as a partner in developing The Emerald Ao Nang. Krabi Magazine: How are sales going at The Emerald Ao Nang? Khun Mai: We have partnered with a number of local and international agencies to develop a strong sales network of private agents as well as internationally recognized property brokers. In addition we also employ a full time sales team
always available to show our many projects to walk in customers. This strong sales model that we have used for our past projects has allowed us to sell a great number of units and currently is working for us in Ao Nang. We currently stand at 30% sold and haven’t even started the new high season in Ao Nang when we expect to nearly sell out. Krabi Magazine: How many units will The Emerald Ao Nang have? Khun Mai: We will build The Emerald Ao Nang in three phases, the first will be built and ready to move in by the end 2017. The other two phases will be ready for transfer and move in the following year. We have 205 units available at The Emerald Ao Nang, these units range in size from our studio units at 29Sq. meters up to our penthouse units at 154 Sq. meters so there is a wide range of units which can cover all needs and budgets. As we have seen Ao Nang take leaps and bound in it’s growth over the past 5 years, we can only hope to imagine what Ao Nang will be once we open The Emerald. We can be assured that the amount of visiting tourists will significantly increase by then providing for a very high occupancy rate and therefore a great return on investment for our customers. THE SUNSET ISLAND
Koh Lanta consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of it all.

The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast - hence it’s often referred to name as ‘The Sunset Island’-and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays take in more dramatic views and less crowded for swimming.
Once called Ban Si Raya, Old Town was historically a commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses and home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago.

UPLUG IN KOH JUM Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades?

e are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own familyrun character, ranging from the backpackers paradise to luxurious beach villas. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons. The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea.

This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without a significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is known as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. The renowned Koh Jum Lodge is an excellent place to stay for a few days, and has superb views to boot. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats which leave from the mainland at the port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local longtail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers. The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year. Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about it. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or longtail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum. Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above. The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat, from where you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel.
If you are driving, it takes about 1 hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum. If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written – Krabi, Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot. These buses will leave from all of these locations at intervals throughout the day and will take you directly to the Laem Kruat pier. Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. Then we went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from. If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat. We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort. Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by. Well worth the experience.

However, few know that Thailand in general is a nation that is warm and sunny most all year round. Beach lovers can find beaches to scale across nearly all twelve months of the year.

here has been a secret not revealed about this amazing country. This secret is monsoon season. Even during this time of the year you can often times find your place in the sun. The droves of people are nowhere to be found. You are likely to keep this secret tucked away in the recesses of your mind for the sake of a return to visit these quiet peaceful shores. Here in the Southern regions of Thailand we share two coasts, the west coast on the Andaman and the east coast along the Gulf of Thailand. Usually during Monsoon season you can find a beach to brazen your body on, as the monsoon does not always affect these two opposing coasts at the same time.

The importance of air is not to be taken lightly. In fact it remains to be the most immediate need of the body. Today, most are not actually giving themselves enough air in order to fuel their bodies properly. Smoking, airborne pollutants, lethargy, shallow breathing are only a few culprits that many wrestle with. As well as starting an intentional breathing program you will also want to be intentional about creating a proper aired breathing environment.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Standing with feet together, like a bird, stretch your arms out as you reach both hands up towards the sky. As you are reaching, take a deep breath in. Release the arms allowing them to gently float down to your side, as you exhale. Do this for a series of 10 breaths.
Seated or standing, breathe in deeply to a count of 5. Exhale slowly and controlled to a count of 5. As you get more comfortable with controlled breathing begin to increase to a count of 10. Do this for 5 minutes or 20 times.
Seated, take a slow deep inhale. Quickly exhale using the diaphragm. Do this for a series of 10 breaths.

Lying down start by squeezing and relaxing each and every muscle from the bottom of your feet to the top of our head. Take in a deep breath for a count of 5 as you contract each muscle, filling the muscle up with blood. Exhale as you release the muscle for a count of 5. Give yourself ample time to perform this breathing technique. You’ll be glad you did.
Perform any aerobic exercise for 5 to 20 minutes at a time. Running, tennis, dancing, etc. Whatever it is you should not be able to perform the activity and carry on a conversation at the same time. You want to be focused on getting oxygen into your body for a consistent uninterrupted period of time.
Rapid breathing technique making a ‘ssshhhh” sound, as if you are quickly asking someone to remain quiet. Using the ‘sshhh’,’ sshhh’, sshhh’ sound you want to breath in and out from your mouth as you use your diaphragm to quickly inhale and exhale, rapidly pushing the air in and out of your body. Do this for a series of 30-50 breaths. Avoid getting light headed; this is not your goal.
Sitting or lying down, relax your entire body. Breathe in normally and slowly. During this time place a smile on your face and begin to think pleasant thoughts. Allow your pleasant thoughts to relax your mind, body and spirit. Enjoy this technique for 5 minutes.

In Bangkok over the last three months we have seen several high profile residential property launches by major developers selling off plan condominiums which have been hugely successful in terms of booking numbers. A 53 story project close to Lumpini Park with 187 super luxury units priced from 30 million baht up, and due for completion in 2018 was 97% sold out in less than two months. Another new project on the corner of Asoke on Sukhumvit Road was launched earlier this year with its pre-sale event held at an upmarket down town shopping mall. There was a queue outside the building early morning and when the doors opened at 10am people were literally running down the escalators to be first in line to book the best units. This project will have almost 800 condominiums on 50 floors when it is completed in two or three years time, and yes, it was completely sold out same day! I could go on but you get the picture. With prices approaching 300,000 baht a square meter and up it would be understandable to think that the Bangkok property market is getting ahead of itself. I remember in 2005 when the talk of the town was that prices had just hit 100,000 baht a square meter and the doom and gloom merchants sitting round the table were predicting the end of the world. The fact is that Thailand just had a lot of catching up to do compared to other regional property markets in terms of valuations and it is now coming into its own as investors see significant upside potential here. In the resort markets however where a significant percentage of foreign buyers have been from Russia it is certainly true that there has been a softening in demand of late. With a 50% fall in the ruble many were simply unable or not willing to complete on earlier pre booked off plan units, or perhaps decided to sell out their contracts and existing condos anyway in order to transfer baht back home and double up their money – who could blame them. However, this does not constitute a crisis, rather a short term window of opportunity for those who want to buy and who can now pick up some great deals and by the way, the ruble is now a smidgeon away from a 50% rise from its lows in January so stand by your beds! In 2008/9 the developed world experienced its largest financial crisis since the great depression of 1929 which sent property and stock markets plummeting by 50%. Now, just six years later those markets are significantly higher than they were then and those that simply blocked out all the noise and held on to what they had have for the most part done very well. Those who saw the opportunity and bought at the lows however have done even better. Thailand is an awesome place to invest in property for long term investors whether in Bangkok, or the resort areas of Phuket, Pattaya, Krabi or Samui, and opportunity calls to the smart money. MOROCCAN MINT TEA
Mint tea, in Arabic « shāy bil n’anā »’, isn’t just a drink in Morocco. It is a sign of hospitality, friendship and tradition. Because this drink is so popular, it is served all day long, after every meal and with every conversation. Moroccans take great pride in their tea and the serving can take on a ceremonial form, especially when prepared for a guest. As a combination of imported ingredients (tea from China) and a local ingredient (fresh mint), it is an early example of globalization in cuisine. INGREDIENTS 10 sprigs of fresh mint, plus extra for garnish 3 teaspoons of green tea 2 tablespoons of sugar (or more to taste) 4 cups of water DIRECTIONS Boil the water and pour a small amount in the teapot, swishing it around to warm the pot. Combine the mint and green tea and sugar in the teapot, then fill it with the rest of the hot water. Let the tea brew for three minutes and set out glasses for the tea. A shot-glass is close to the slender glasses used in Morocco. Fill just one glass with the tea, then pour it back in the pot and repeat. This helps to dissolve and distribute the sugar. Pour the tea. If you want a nice foam on the tea so always pour with the teapot a high above the glass. If you do not have at least a little foam on the top of the first glass, then pour it back into the teapot and try again until the tea starts to foam up nicely. Garnish with the remaining sprigs of mint. Even if it’s a hot beverage, moroccan mint tea is ideal to ease the thirst. So use it as your perfect ally to fight the heat and drink it to your heart’s content.
