Heritage sites as Machu Picchu in Peru, Petra in Jordan, and many other historic sites around the world, including in Ireland, Sudan, and Turkey. Comer and his son specialize in applying remote sensing using LiDAR technology to the management of protected areas, particularly World Heritage Sites like Nan Madol.
LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing technology that measures distances by illuminating a target with laser light and analyzing the reflected light. It operates on the principle of sending out laser pulses and measuring the time it takes for the light to bounce back. LiDAR technology has many applications across different fields, including mapping
and surveillance, environmental monitoring, archaeology and cultural heritage, civil engineering and infrastructure, and meteorology and climate research. The last time the Comers were in Pohnpei, they conducted aerial flights using a LiDAR-
