FSM President expresses significant doubts about China’s proposed multi-lateral PICS plan By Bill Jaynes The Kaselehlie Press
June 6, 2022 FSM—On May 30, the People’s Republic of China hosted a meeting of the 10 Pacific Island Countries with which it has diplomatic relations—the Second PRCPICS Foreign Ministers Meeting - with the hope of adopting the China-Pacific Island Countries Development Vision and a five-year implementation plan. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi represented the PRC and also had in person and virtual bi-lateral meetings with the chief representatives of Foreign Affairs with each of the PICs (Pacific Island Country).
documents as written and without change by the PICs. At the end of the meetings, PRC press releases announced great success and assent by the PICs for their plans. Actually, the PICs, while not rejecting the plans did not take action on them, agreeing instead to delay decisions on the matter until the next meeting which has not yet been scheduled.
After the first PRC-PICS Foreign Ministers Meeting last year, China took a similar tack with regards to reports of success of those meetings when it released what was purported to be a joint communique it said was signed by all of the PICs. That release took the FSM by surprise, who in fact had not signed off on the communique.
Kandhi Elieisar and FSM President David Panuelo’s Special Assistant Richard Clark, demanding that the FSM make no mention during the meetings of the issues contained in a letter written by President Panuelo to 22 PIC leaders expressing several serious and pointed concerns over China’s proposed Development Vision plan.
President Panuelo did not personally speak with Ambassador Huang, but in discussing the matter with cabinet members, he decided to soften the language that might be used when the FSM presented at the meeting. Instead of urging the leaders of the other countries to “reject” the proposal, the FSM would instead urge them not to accept it; otherwise, their concerns Just hours before the start of the second would remain a part of their statement. FSM officially welcomes the FSS Tosiwo Nakayama to the FSM By Bill Jaynes The Kaselehlie Press
June 4, 2022 Pohnpei—This morning, beginning under a torrential Pohnpei rain, the FSM officially welcomed the FSS Tosiwo Nakayama, the new Australia provided Guardian Class surveillance vessel, to the FSM at a ceremony at the Marine Surveillance Dock in Dekehtik, Pohnpei.
“Named after the esteemed first President of the Federated States of Micronesia, this boat marks a new era in maritime surveillance capabilities for FSM,” said Australia’s Ambassador to the FSM, Jo Cowley. “This boat is Australian-built and is part of Australia’s multibillion dollar program called the Pacific Maritime Security Program.
