Elan
Contemporary rug designs are generally characterized by stark contrasts, bold uses of color, and geometric or free-form style elements. They are normally architectural and modern in their look. Contemporary rugs can also feature retro patterns. Typically these designs are inspired by art deco and arts and crafts periods.

This style is a blending of traditional and contemporary styles. Quite often, the blend provides the elegance and timelessness of a traditional pattern with a little less formality. For example, a transitional rug may feature a classic floral pattern but not a border. Or, the rug’s design may feature a border and an intricate pattern but with little color contrast between the two elements.
Chroma
Traditional designs are modern-day representations of time-honored European and Asian patterns. In some cases, a traditional rug’s design may be a pattern that has been used for generations. Traditional rugs are normally considered formal, but they can also be used in casual living spaces. Traditional rugs normally contain specific elements like oral and other intricate patterns, borders and central medallions.

Types of rugs
NOURISON
CUSTOM RUGS Nourison offers a variety of custom services for area rugs and broadloom carpet. Nourison can weave your rug from 100% wool, silk, or a combination of both. Various construction techniques are available, including hand knotted and loom woven. Available rug dimensions range from small runners and rounds to oversized mansion rugs, ensuring your dream rug will fit your space perfectly.
HAND KNOTTING
HAND WOVEN
Hand-knotting is the most labor-intensive of rug constructions. In the hands of master weavers, this technique can produce works of art unparalleled in detail and beauty. In a knotted rug, tiny threads are tied onto the warp, creating the pattern or design. The weft threads anchor and align the rows of knots. When the knots are later cut, they stand away from the warp/weft backing to create the velvety pile of the finished piece. The density of the pile is determined by how tightly the knots are packed together. There are a variety of actual knot styles, among which are Persian, Turkish, and Tibetan knots.

In Tibet, native weavers developed a distinctive method long ago of weaving woven on a vertical loom. A Tibetan knot is made when a metal rod is inserted into to the cotton foundation (warp and weft threads) during the knotting process. The two warp threads are at different positions around the weaving rod, and the threads are knotted form left to right.
A split-weave kilim is constructed when colored weft yarns are woven through the warps to create the pattern and the thread is pulled through the warp only as far as the pattern and color dictate. Then the thread is turned back on itself to go the direction in which it came, finishing the same side on which it started. Different colored threads meet but do not join, creating the design.
When the row of knotting is completed, the knots are cut off the metal rode. This creates a surface texture in the pile with the signature horizontal striations that identify “Tibetan weave” to connoisseurs the world over. The most common Tibetan knotted rugs are in 60, 80, or 100 knots per square inch. The higher the knot count, the thinner the carpet. This type of weaving is indicative of tribal and modern designs.
HAND TUFTING
LOOM WOVEN
Hand tufted rugs and hand hooked rugs are produced with a tufting gun. Working much like an oversized sewing needle, the gun pushes and pulls threads of yarn through a scrim—a pre-woven grid foundation. With a hooked rug, the loops of yarn are left intact to form a characteristically “knobby” pile. In a tufted rug, the tops of loops are sheared to expose the thread ends for a softer and plusher pile.
Nourison’s loom woven rugs are made on the best quality looms, which have been customized to weave exceptional quality products with a feel and suppleness that rivals handmade rugs. These loom woven pieces are then hand washed and hand finished, utilizing time-honored techniques, to accentuate the beauty of each individual rug. Vacuum regularly. Due to the potential for rug damage, beater bar vacuums not recommended. Remove spills immediately by blotting with a dry cloth. Professionally clean only. Do not steam clean or wet shampoo your jute rug. Plant fibers are highly absorbent, so when exposed to liquids or excessive dampness, they are subject to some shrinking and puckering. Rug padding is recommended.

If a spill should occur, it is recommended to blot the affected area with white paper towels or clean white terry cloth towel. Rubbing distorts fiber and moisture will weaken the fiber, which causes breaking or damage. With a soft brush, comb the face of the rug in the direction of the pile. Anticipate that the pile might look flatter and more reflective after grooming. Once dry, re-brush the fiber to regain original texture. Rug padding is recommended.

That sum, fetched at a Sotheby’s sale, shattered the previous record for rugs sold at auction. But it won’t help the struggling Washington gallery overcome its financial woes because the money must be used for future acquisitions, not to help the bottom line. The winning bid for the Clark Sickle-Leaf Carpet stunned viewers and participants at the sale, in which 25 rugs and carpets were auctioned off to raise money for new acquisitions of American and contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery. The anonymous bidder, who participated by phone, paid $33,765,000 for the 17th-century Persian piece, which came from the bequest of William Clark, the industrialist and U.S. Senator who donated more than 200 works of fine art and rugs to the Corcoran upon his death in 1925. Before Wednesday’s sale, a blue leaf-patterned 17th-century rug from southeast Iran held the global record, selling for $9.6 million at Christie’s in London in 2010. “I thought it might sell for 10 or 15 million dollars,” said Mary Jo Otsea, the auctioneer and senior consultant for rugs and carpets at Sotheby’s. The auction company estimated the carpet would sell for between $5 million and $7 million. “No one ever expected to see it on the market. Its beauty and rarity — the closest comparables are in museums.” Which is why, Otsea believes, the carpet sold for such a high figure. Rarity pushes the value of art up, and most Persian carpets are subdued in patterns and hues. But the roughly 8-by-6-foot carpet is said to be the epitome of the “vase” technique, perfected during the Safavid dynasty in Persia. It was last displayed in Washington at the Sackler Gallery in 2003 and the Corcoran Gallery in 2006. The Sotheby’s sale also comes as the classical carpet market — carpets made during the 16th and 17th centuries — is booming. A decade ago, only the most famous Persian rugs would sell for seven figures at auction. But collectors in Asia and the Middle East are investing in Persian rugs with the same enthusiasm they are showing for rare, valuable contemporary works. Museums in the Middle East are also investing in Islamic art collections, including the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, now under construction. And renewed interest in Islamic art in the West has probably contributed to prices, too, with the 2011 opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands and last year’s opening of the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre. As for who bought the record-breaking rug, it’s anybody’s guess. Sotheby’s never talks, and the Corcoran doesn’t know.
