The Malvern & Rolleston News Team - L to R: Staff members, Jodie Miller and Lois Haskett. Co-owners, Jan Thomas and Jan Crossley and staff member, Sarah Blackburn.

A Christmas Message from the Malvern News The year has flown by, for us at the News - and we’re sure many others will have experienced the same thing. From cruising into May and June - it seemed to be hard down on the accelerator, as we shot into November and December. The paper has become bigger and busier - while our office has definitely also become busier, but unfortunately hasn’t got any bigger! The core team at the News has remained the same, but we have added a new office assistant to our ranks. Office space constraints have seen us consider alternatives, but for now it’s make the best of what we have and adjust things to cope. As always, the highlights of the year are meeting with, and hearing about, the community in which we live and work. Things that wouldn’t be deemed important on national news, or in big dailies, are the things we love to hear of, and the things that bind communities together. We feel honoured that folk like to share these things with us, and that we can share them with you, our readers. As in any small enterprise - each day is a learning curve and often things are sent to try us. Change of deliverers, temperamental printers, insufficient staffing levels, along with some errant starlings who wished to reside inside the building and not outside it, are just some of the daily issues to be dealt with - generally with a smile, although not always at the time! Readers will have noticed the gradual increase in newspaper size and for this we have our loyal, and much appreciated advertisers to thank. It is they who enable us to have enough pages available for the coverage of community events, awards, achievements and business information - and we cannot thank them enough for their support. As with everything - costs to produce the News, have risen and so without the level of advertising we enjoy, it would be increasingly difficult to cover everything we’re asked to, and have it delivered to you. We hope readers will support the advertised trades-people and contractors - they do a great job and very importantly - they’re local! We’re looking forward to a well-earned break over the Christmas/January period, and while it may seem like a long time to those not in the same industry, it’s a necessary time to recharge and enable us to continue to meet those, often annoying, deadlines - that are all part of the publishing business. The office will shut on December 19th and re-open at 9am on January 19th. We sincerely wish everyone a lovely Christmas and New Year - one that is relaxing and refreshing and hopefully spent with friends and family. Don’t eat too much, don’t drink too much (we at the News wouldn’t dream of doing either!!!) - definitely don’t get behind the wheel after drinking, but above all, enjoy Christmas and all it may mean to you. We wish everyone the very best, and will be back in the New Year once again.

Th e misadventures of Blue Ted are sure to bring a smile to the faces of young and old alike. Has anyone ever wondered what happens when a teddy bear is left at home, alone? The bo ok is wonder fully illustrated with bright, cheerful photographs that all help tell the story. Out in time for Christmas, the book was originally going to be a one-off, but judging by the children’s enthusiastic response at Kirwee Model School, Glenn’s first print run will be very popular. Who knows, maybe Blue Ted will keep having adventures which Glenn will have to write about over the coming years! Originally established by the United Nations in 1985, De c e m b er 5 t h wa s International Volunteer Day (IVD). The goal of IV D is to heighten awareness of the importan t contri buti on of volunteer service, thereby stimulating more people in all walks of life to offer their services as volunteers, both at home and abroad. I V D is well su pp or te d internationally, and is steadily gaining popularity in New Zealand. In Malvern there are numerous folk who regularly volunteer their time and one such family are the Van de Pols of Sheffield. Patrick and Bronwyn Van de Pol live on a lifestyle block near Sheffield, with daughter Zoe and son Connor. Connor The family are actively involved in v olu n te er work in th e community. Patrick has been volunteering for m uch o f the p ast seventeen years; beginning with the Red Cross. He is currently a member of the Sheffield Fire Service and St J o h n M a lv e r n . T h e s e organisations require a time commitment each week of approximately four and a half hours, not counting call-outs, events, meetings and ex tra training. Patrick said he decided to volunteer because, “I’m an introvert, so not only was it a way of meeting new people, it was also a way of helping the community.”

Ten year old daughter Zoe is following his lead and has been a part of St J ohn Malvern for two years. In recent competitions Zoe led her team to three first places, earning several trophies for her efforts. Bronwyn denies doing much more than keeping house, but when questioned further she admits that she does help out at their children’s school with trips and fundraisers. W orking in the Darfield Library also means she’s on deck for additional events. “I think with work it comes down to the fa ct that we are a library that tries to involve the wider Malvern community in its events, such as story times, art exhibitions and such like, it's hard to say no,” she said modestly. At seven years of age, son Connor is still a bit young for volunteering, but Bronwyn commented that if he does

Glenroy celebrated Christmas with a Party, held on December 14th. A lovely time was had by the forty plus attendees and of course Santa was a hit wit h the children.

Another year of learning and fun has come to an end at Darfield Playcentre, as the children attended the last sessions of the year. It has been a busy term with plenty going on at the Centre and also a couple of outings and visits. One of the major highlights of the term was a trip to Charlie Draper’s farm, to see his plane, tractors, diggers and other farm vehicles. Th ere are many vehi cl e enthusiasts at Playcentre and it was fabulous to see them enjoying some real life action. Playcentre thanks the Draper family for organising and hosting this event. Playcentre children and families felt fortunate this term to be invited by Sheffield School to join in with their Perceptual Motor Programme, which runs in their New Entran ts’ class. The children who attended enjoyed challenging themselves on the activities and working alongside the school children to complete these challenges. “A big thanks to Sheffield School for inviting us and looking after our children so well, ” said a Playcen tre spokesperson. As always, the children at Darfield Playcentre spent some time planning and creating a display for the Kirwee Show. Baldwin “For the past two years we've painted a nativity scene, but this year we got ambitious and invited some of the local children and teens (plus a few adults) to paint a new scene every day on the church windows.” “Trinity Church is now counting down the days to Christmas with its outdoor Advent Calendar.” There are many types of calendars used in different countries. The most common ones here, in Britain and in the United States, are made of paper or card with 25 little windows. A window is opened on every day. W hen they were first made, they displayed scenes from the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus. They are call ed A dve nt C alen dar s because Advent is the short season of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. Advent means 'Coming' in Latin. The new Hororata Reserve, walk, cycle and horse riding track has now reached stage two and will, when completed, take users all the way around the seventy hectare Reserve. Already a surprisingly large number of people are using this new and ex citing facility. S ta ge on e, whi ch wa s completed in spring this year follows the western b o und ary of th e reserve, beside Hororata Road to Th wai tes’ Road , and adjacent to St J ohn’s church. Linked by Thwaites’ Road, stage two, just completed, then returns along the eastern boundary of the Reserve to link up with tracks that now follow the equestrian course around the racecourse and ice skating lake . As f unds be com e available these existing tracks wil be upgraded, to bring them to the same standard as the two new sections. In time it is hoped funding will be found to connect s tages one and two, thereby avoiding the need to use Thwaites’ Road. A fun day, walk, run and cycle is planned for Autumn 2015 to celebrate progress so far. Once this project is completed it is sure to attract large numbers of users from the local community and the greater Canterbury area. An awesome rural venue to walk or ride a bike or horse in a safe e nv ir o nm e n t ha s be e n created. The Malvern Collie Club have been in existence for well over one hundred years and early nex t year will host a Field Day, for Maiden dogs only, at Annavale Station (by kind permission of Reece and Mel Cleland). Cleland The Field Day is to be held on Sunday, J anuary 25th and see advertisement in the New Y ear for further details. The event will begin at 9:30am with all dogs present required to be registered before midday (dogs must be dosed and hold a current certificate - see local vet). There will be a Huntaway and a short hill pulling course, with a competition on both

courses, being held after lunch. Yards will also be set up for starting-out dogs, and for demonstration. Collie Club members from both Malvern and Glenroy Clubs, will be on hand to offer training tips for anyone with a young dog and just starting. They can offer guidance, or assistance with a dog problem that needs fixing away from home. It’s the place to be for spectators too - a beautiful setting and the opportunity to see what makes a working dog. New members are welcome and refreshments and food will be available.

LENDING OVER 80% Christma s money saving t ips: The countdown to Christmas began a long time ago, and hopefu lly you’ve been putting a little bit of money as ide too t o alleviate the financial burden of the h oli day season. There’s so much we need to purchase, from Ch ristmas presents and fancy food to tanks of pet rol and plane tickets home. If you haven’t been putting mo ney aside you might be lo oking ahead at the coming month s w ith a little trepi dation, but perhaps that’s t he incentive you need to start saving mo ney for the hol idays next year. So if you’re wonder ing ho w you’l l stretch the budget t his Christmas, why not try some of t hese money-saving tips: 1. Instead of a proper tree, buy a plastic tree that’ll last more than one Chri stmas. 2. Do your present shopp ing in the New Year, when everyone is retu rning t heir unwanted gifts. 3. Leave the kids at home when shop ping – you m ight be feeling a litt le too generou s and let t hem fill t he trol ley with un necessary ju nk. 4. Watch YouTube videos on making your own decorations. There are some great tutoria ls out there that make it real ly easy. 5. Make sou p on Boxing Day. Instead of throw ing out all the left over bone s an d vegetable s fr om Ch ristmas dinner, put them in a pot and make soup. 6. If you have to fill stockings, don’t be scared of putt ing something practical in there to take u p a litt le space, l ike socks or a new pair of under wear. 7. Many supermarkets have schemes that all ow you t o put mo ney as ide regularly for sto re credit over the Christmas break. 8. Do a second hand Secret Santa… that way you’re only buying the one present, and if it has to be second hand, your budget w on’t take a big hit.

9. Ask the kids to make prese nts. They might want to get you something, and you’ll end up paying for your own present, so get them to make something instead. 10. Ham, turkey and chicken gets more expensive closer to Christmas, so base your l unch arou nd a different meat, like steak or sea fo od. Worst mo ney saving advice: While research ing ou r money saving tip s we found some bizar re advice that may be a little wei rd or u nusual, but wi ll defin itely he lp you save the pennies! Here are some of the best o nes: 1. If you have a dog, collect the hair it sheds duri ng the year. At the end of the year you shoul d have eno ugh hair to knit yourse lf a jersey. After al l, better a s weater from a dog you know and love, than from a sheep you'l l never meet. 2. If you're hosting a dinne r party and don 't have a lot of cash, make alternative after-dinner mints. Just freeze a tube of toothpa ste, then cut it open and sl ice the contents into wafer-thin pieces to produce your very own treats. They'll lo ok cool and al so leave your guest s wit h fresh breath. 3. Use an ol d calendar. ie 2014 shoul d’ve been able to u se a calendar from 2003, 1992, 1986, 1975, 1964, 1958, 1947, 1936, 1930 and 1919.

To the Editors: It was with honour and humour when I noted my photo entitled ‘King of the Kitchen’ at the Day Club Christmas function. However I feel the credit goes to ‘the girls of the kitchen’. A special thanks for their planning, purchasing and formulation of the Club activities for such a wonderful Christmas celebration. Also an ex tended thank-you to all volunteers of the Club for their input throughout the year. I consider, at this time, it’s appropriate for our committee to thank all volunteers of our community/district such as St John, Fire Brigades, rugby, netball & garden bowls’ Clubs along with the many other organisations within our community. W ithout the input of volunteers, we and other activities, could not exist. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Y ear.

John Newton, Coalgate. To the Editors: In reply to Paul McOscar (December 12th.), I would think his directions to his guests are just as confusing as his actual address - Homebush Road, Glentunnel, - opposite the Hororata Golf Club. Perhaps he would like to re-write history there as well. I would also suggest that he looks up that dictionary for the meaning of the word ‘Commemorative’. Once again you cannot change history and make an original building into one that ‘commemorates’ itself. However it is nice that he admits to being one of the complainers. W e now know who to blame for this fiasco.

Laurie Squires, Hororata.

From: Selwyn MP Amy Adams:

Merry Christmas from HotelHomes PM. Property Management never sleeps, appoint us now and enjoy a stress free holiday!

I would like to wish all of the readers of the Malvern News a very happy Christmas and New Year. I hope that you have the chance to relax with family and friends and that, whether you are staying at home or travelling away over the holiday period, you may be able to enjoy some more settled weather than the chaotic extremes we have been experiencing during Spring. It has been a busy year and I have enjoyed catching up with some of you when I have been out and about in the electorate at various events. Thank you for your support this year - it is an honour to have the opportunity to represent you in Parliament for another term and I am looking forward to working hard for Selwyn again during 2015. As always, if you have any concerns or issues that you think I may be able to assist with please do contact my office in Templeton for advice. My office will be closed for the Christmas-New Year period from Tuesday 23rd December and will re-open again on Wednesday 14th January.

Thank you for your support this year I am available throughout the holiday period if required.

From the Mayor of Selwyn Kelvin Coe: Season’s greetings one and all and a special welcome to all the new arrivals to our district this year. It’s been another year of extraordinary growth for Selwyn with all the challenges and opportunities that it brings. Christmas is a time to share friendship and goodwill with our family and friends, and recognise the true treasures in our life as we care and share our values and ideals with others. We owe so much to so many when we think of all the volunteers who contribute to the wellbeing of our community. Our sports clubs, recreational, cultural activities and Community Care services are all largely serviced by volunteers. Our new Community Response programme initiated following the earthquakes, is proving very successful and complements our emergency service and Civil Defence volunteers. Volunteers all contribute so much to the wellbeing of our community and ensuring Selwyn is such a wonderful place to live, work and play. On behalf of the Councillors and myself, I would like to thank all t hos e wh o h av e supported us and Council staff in the many activiti es undertaken during the year. After a particularly busy year I hope we can all enjoy the Christmas break, take time to reflect and refresh as we remember family and friends, and consider the good things in life. It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to work with you and for you this past year. Safe journeys, Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year to you all.

Kelvin Coe

W hile the cooler weather may have kept a few away from last Saturday’s Country Christmas in the Park event in Darfield, organisers were still ex tremely happy with the turnout. “The weather certainly didn’t dampen any spirits,” said the event orga niser, Re becka Slaven. Slaven Feedback from the event was all positive, with one woman heard to say, that it was the best show ever, largely due to the diversity of performers on offer.

“Every performer was just awesome,” Rebecka enthused. “They really came together and wow, I thought the talent was just amazing.” “Although we ran over time by quite some, the end was a massive highlight for me with local children singing Christmas carols and Kim Churton getting those remaining, out of their seats and dancing away to Zumba routines.” “Chevonn Chevonn W alker was a fantastic MC and the whole event and its

performers just engendered a huge sense of pride.” “I really enjoyed myself,” Rebecka added, “and I could not have done it without a great support crew and fantastic people on the night.” “A huge thank you to everyone and I hope you all have a very merry Christmas,” she finished. This happe ned in the Bay of Islands in the s mall Oihi Bay. Over 3000 Maori were present. Samuel Marsde n’s Christ mas Day message focuSsed on Luke 2. 10, where t he angel s peaks to s hep herds, “I bring you g ood news that will bring great joy to all people.” Chief Ruatara explained as mu ch as he coul d and reas sured the people that this ‘good news’ would be come clear over time. T hose pre sent were not able to compre hen d the full signifi cance of this visit and the message. However, they did respon d with a dan ce of j oy (haka) a nd welcome d the missionaries to stay with them. Two thoughts are signifi cant i n Marsd en’s ser mon. The Good News demonstrates that this message is for our blessi ng and bene fit. And it is for all people. There are not insiders and outsiders, s ome who are fav oured a nd other s who are e xclu ded. Over the e nsuing de cade other missi onaries ca me an d lived i n Maori settleme nts in Northland. They w orked har d at good relation s, writing out the Ma ori language a nd translating the Scripture , teaching Maori t o read a nd write (in both Ma ori an d English ). They also had to learn how to live off this n ew land. Shee p far ming was first introdu ced here and pastoral farming was establishe d. It was not all plain sailing. Life in New Zealand with its isolation b ought many hardshi ps an d challenges. Missionary mistakes, misu nderstan ding, mi scondu ct were also part of the mi x. However, by the mid -1820 ’s s ome Maori were b ecoming Christians and t hey were eager to share the message of pea ce on earth, goodwill to all peopl e. It led to much bles sing as tribes embrace d forgiveness rather than revenge. T he missi onary’s relation ship with Maori established a foundation on which the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. Its provision for indigenous pe ople is uniq ue a mong the history of colonisati on. Wi shing every one a Merry Christmas & a prosperous New Yea r!

One of the smallest details of the story of the birth of Jesus is that he is born in a manger. That’s all it says, a manger. It doesn’t mention a stable, but we assume a stable because where else would you find a manger? Sometimes it is depicted as a cave, since the countryside of Bethlehem lends itself to keeping animals sheltered in small caves. But the only thing mentioned is a manger. And for some reason, Luke sees fit to mention this little detail not just once but twice in his Gospel. The first mention is in the angel’s message - according to Luke’s gospel the angel says to the shepherds: “This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” It is significant that they Rev Susan Baldwin overlooks do not say, “go into Bethlehem, and keep looking until an entirely different kind of you find a baby. You can’t miss it, he’ll be the only one in flock than that usually found a manger.” No, the angel says, “this will be a sign for in her church. you: and by doing so it implies a deeper meaning, a particular significance for this event. It is important enough that Luke doesn’t want us to miss it, so he says it again: “the shepherds went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger.” What is a manger after all? It is a container from which animals normally feed. And yet, we think it’s significant that the shepherds found him in a manger, and not someplace else. Being born in a manger is a powerful symbol: Jesus is born and later he calls himself the “bread of life.” He is sustenance for the world; he is where the world’s hungers can be fed. He is also called Prince of Peace. If you will come and eat at his banquet, you will taste peace. If you drink at his table, you will taste justice. If you are hungry for hope, he is the place that you will find sustenance. When the angel says, “this will be a sign for you,” it is not about giving directions. It is the significance of Jesus Christ, the son of God, born in a manger, a place where feeding occurs, where hunger can be satisfied. The sign of a manger is the sign that Christ will be our sustenance. The hungers of everyday men and women are for peace, for hope, for courage to face our addictions, for easing our loneliness, for freedom from our anger or regrets. That’s why the hymn, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Main West Coast Rd, Yaldhurst RD 6 Chch concludes saying: “The Wishing all our valued customers a hopes and fears of all the very Merry Christmas and a years are met in thee tonight.” We will be hungry Healthy, Happy New Year more than once in our WE WILL BE CLOSING MIDDAY 24TH DEC & lives, and we can come to RE-OPENING ON MON 5TH JAN 2014 God to have our hungers All enquiries please satisfied. phone 03 342 6223 or fax 03 342 6234

Author J oe Charles was born in Timaru, his parents both from Central Otago pioneer families. By the 1950’s he was farming at Glenroy. Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, J oe started writing at a young age. His first ballad, written at the age of ten was duly submitted to his Correspondence School teacher, who ex pressed a wish, “that he put as much effort into his school work as into rhyming ramblings”. Despite this less than encouraging start J oe continued writing and went on to be one of New Zealand's best known ballad writers. His first book, ’Black Billy Tea’ was published in 1990. The book contained a ballad entitled ‘The Coleridge Run’ about a traction engine race. The ballad now appears on the new information board at the Lake Coleridge Power Station which was unveiled recently at the 100 year celebrations. Singer W illiam Clauson, Clauson made a recording of 'Black Billy Tea', recognising the importance of

J oe's work as a folklorist, he told J oe that he had a duty to continue to record the history of the nation in song. W hile J oe passed away in 1991 his legacy continues through his daughter Robyn Matheson, who has recently published a second book of her father’s writings. The book, ’Blackberry Pie’ contains several ballads related to the Malvern district and continues J oe’s mission; to record New Zealand's colourful folk-past in verse, while there were still the old timers with anecdotes to tell them. This is the history of the ordinary people who helped build a nation; history which is gathered in bars and shearing sheds and not gleaned from books. Tall stories are blended with genuine historical events. The ballads finding their strength in Joe’s love of the land, its mountains, rivers, and wild-life and in his commitment to the history of ordinary people. Along with a powerful sense of the past, J oe had a fine

Sheffield Hall has reopened to the public. An engineering report on the hall, commissioned by the Sheffield Hall Committee, has now been receiv ed and reviewed by Council. The report has identified that the main body of the hall can be reopened with the foyer area being closed off. The hall will b e able to acc essed from a side door rather than the main entrance. The report has identified that there is a risk that the blockwork at the front of the hall façade could fall if an earthquake occurred. Howev er the report identifies the façade is more lik ely to fall outwards as it is supported by the roof on the inside. This foyer area will be closed off and the main entrance will be locked. A fence has also been erect ed at the front of the hall around the façade. The report has also identified a number of useful options to strengthen the hall that will need to be considered. The Council and the Hall Committee will be reviewing these options in the future. Hall bookings can be made by contacting Michelle Webster on 03 318 3063.

• A lady lost her handbag in the bustle of Christmas shopping. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, "Hmmm.... That's funny. When I lost my bag there was a $20 bill in it. Now there are twenty $1 bills." The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have any change for a reward." • The Santa Claus at the mall was very surprised when a young lady about twenty years old walked up and sat on his lap. Santa doesn't usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him, so he asked her, "What do you want for Christmas?" "Something for my mother, please." said the young lady. "Something for your mother? Well, that's very thoughtful of you,'' smiled Santa. "What do you want me to bring her?" Without blinking she replied, "A son-in-law!" • A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead."
