cornfield to the east. John and Donna Rekeweg see the acres of twisted and smashed corn to the west and north. They survived the Aug. 24 tornado that thundered

on past Woodburn and into Ohio. Then the cleanup began. Recovery will be yet another chapter. Yet cousins Paul and John agree that it could have been worse.

The Eel River Elementary School PTO sponsored its fourth annual Otter Trot, a schoolwide walk-athon in which students collect pledges for a mile, or more, of exercise around the neighboring Carroll Middle School track. Incentives were given to those who collected the most money, but the emphasis was on helping the school community. “This event has been really great for us,” Brandy Baumann, Eel River PTO secretary and event coordinator, said. “It has been our biggest fundraiser and it’s an easy fundraiser to coordinate. The kids enjoy doing it and we enjoy cheering them on.” The event is one of two big fundraising events throughout the school

The Carroll High School marching band claimed a second-place trophy in its first show of the season. The Charger Pride competed Sept. 10 at the On the Banks of the Wabash Marching Band Festival at Bluffton High School. Homestead took first in Class A, and Northrop placed third. “We felt pretty good about it,” director Doug Hassell said of the performance, which featured three of the four major parts to the show. Hassell said he expects to have the full show ready by this weekend. Carroll fields 170 band members to perform “Nocturna Animalia.” The Kingsmen Carnival of Bands will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Penn High School, 56100 Bittersweet Road, Mishawaka. Gates open at noon; performances begin at 1 p.m. Eleven Class A bands will perform, beginning with Portage at 7:47 p.m.

and closing with Homestead at 10:10 p.m. Carroll performs at 9:31 p.m. The host band will perform in exhibition at 10:23 p.m. In all, 37 bands will march. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students and ages 65 and over. “It’s a really good beginning,” Hassell said of the band season. “I think in addition to what the kids are able to do on the field, the general sense is that we’re really enjoying the time that we have. It’s a positive group and a positive vibe.” The Charger Pride will march again Oct. 1 at the Homestead Fall Festival of Bands. The full schedule was not available at press time. The first band will march at approximately 10 a.m., and the final band at about 5:30 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens.
