The Arcola Volunteer Fire Department honored Deanna “Dee Dee” Wilhelm as the Arcola Citizen of the Year. She accepted the surprise recognition Oct. 18 at the fire station. “I didn’t have any clue there was going to be an award,” Wilhelm said. She attended at the urging of her husband, Steve, who retired after 30 years with the AVFD. Assistant Chief Trebor Trahin recited Wilhelm’s contributions, including creating thousands of reflective signs that mark addresses in the department’s service area. “I made the signs from the time the firehouse started selling them,” Wilhelm told this newspaper. “There have been lots of signs over the years.” She said she appreciated the recognition, but said her work was never a burden. “I remember

driving past signs and I thought ‘I remember doing that one’ and that was just kind of neat,” she said. The longtime fire department volunteer and Carroll High School band mom said it’s time for the next group of volunteers
to step forward. “I just think there’s a difference in the new generation from the generation that I’m a part of, and [they feel] there’s nothing in it for them,” she said. “We need to change that mindset.” “I think people need
to be more involved in their community, and encourage their children to be involved — their churches, the Lions Club, the PTO, anything,” she said. Trahin recited the See ARCOLA, Page A12
Byron Health Center welcomed Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne in celebrating two milestones. Henry presented Byron Executive Director Deb Lambert with a proclamation celebrating Byron’s 50 years as a licensed nursing home. Rotary Club President Candace Schuler and Henry shared with Lambert in opening the 100th Little Free Library. Byron Health Center has been a part of the community since 1853, has been in the same location since 1916, and has been a licensed nursing home for 50 years, Henry said in his proclamation. “The former tuberculosis sanitarium has evolved into a long-termcare facility,” the Rotary Club said in a statement. The mayor said Byron
provides physical, emotional, mental and neurological services to patients young and old. “Each resident is recognized as an individual with unique needs who seeks and deserves to reach their optimal potential,” Henry said. He described Byron as “a community of inclusion and acceptance.” Lambert and Henry spoke to staff and residents in the dining room. “So as the community health needs changed over the course of decades, our mission and our vision changed with that,” Lambert said. “I don’t think we could do the things that we do without the support of the Mayor’s Office and the [Allen County] Commissioners Office.” Lambert also addressed the second celebration, in the Byron lobby, where a former phone booth alcove found its new See BYRON, Page A3
