Bishop Dwenger and Concordia Lutheran high schools welcome new band directors this fall. Those bands hope to join Carroll, Leo, Northrop and Snider in building on past success. Bands compete in assorted organizations and in several enrollment levels; competition dates and venues vary accordingly. Most local bands will march for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the On the Banks of the Wabash high school marching band festival at Bluffton High School. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Performance schedules typically are finalized in the week leading up to the show. Watch INFortWayne.com for updates. • BISHOP DWENGER •

Principal Jason Witzigreuter visits with students during lunch hour at Northrop High School. Witzigreuter is a graduate of Snider High School and a former Northrop band director.

Ball State University in 1998, he earned his master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2012. He also served as a band director at Anderson and Angola and in Wisconsin, before arriving at Northrop in

2007. It was an ideal job in a large school, he recalled in an interview. “My intention was to retire here as band director,” he said. “And as I started working more in the program I thought

Jason Witzigreuter is back at Northrop High School. The former band director now directs from the principal’s office. Both jobs are really about working with people, he said. Witzigreuter returned to Fort Wayne Community Schools in July, after four years as principal at Adams Central High School. The 1993 graduate of Snider High School served as Northrop’s band director for five years before taking the administration job in Monroe in 2012. Returning to a school that he knows so well is a huge advantage, he said. “I told everybody that my best teaching experience was at Northrop, that those five years were huge to me,” he said.
