Saint Mary’s Christmas Box to help 1,000 families

One thousand families will receive a box crammed with canned foods through the Saint Mary’s Soup Kitchen Christmas Box Program.

On Dec. 10, those families also will get a loaf of fresh bread, butterspread, potatoes and either a ham or turkey.

Persons wishing to be eligible for a Christmas box can register at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church at the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Lafayette Street: the Saturday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon; or the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, from 10 to 11 a.m.

A photo ID, driver’s license or Green Card is required. The person registering will then receive a postcard in the mail, which should be presented to receive the food box.

Though the distribution date is still a month

away, volunteers are already arranging for the tons of food needed to fill the boxes, ordering the meat and stockpiling the potatoes. According to Joe Miller, director of the Christmas Box Program, each family will get a variety of canned fruits and vegetables and spaghetti and sauce. In addition, they’ll receive a fresh loaf of bread provided by the Lewis Bakery here in Fort Wayne, a five-pound bag of potatoes and one pound of butter-spread. They can also choose a ham or a turkey. Five local marching bands perform in state finals Marching bands from five local high schools reached the 2016 Indiana State School Music Association finals, Oct. 29 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Ten bands reached the state finals in each of four Open Class enrollment divisions.

In Class A, Homestead placed third and Carroll placed 10th. Avon was first.

In Class B, North Side placed ninth. Northview was first.

In Class C, Concordia Lutheran placed eighth.

Western was first.

In Class D, Woodlan placed fifth. Springs Valley was first.

A community celebration of Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) fills the halls of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. The Oct. 29 celebration was free to the community, and featured music, food and activities for kids. The holiday is an opportunity for family and friends to come together and remember ancestors with memorials and traditional Mexican songs. El Azteca was on hand serving up tacos, rice and beans and local artists painted faces as decorative skulls, a classic symbol used during the celebration.

Fort4Fitness to host holiday 5k Fort4Fitness is teaming up with the city of Fort Wayne to host a 5k run during the “first lighting” of Blue Jacket Inc.’s Fantasy of Lights display in Franke Park.

“With our very successful Spring Cycle and Fall Festival, Fort4Fitness has become the catalyst for inspiring healthy living through fitness that we knew it would be,” Tim Kenesey, Fort4Fitness founder board chair, said in a statement. “Greater Fort Wayne continues to seek additional community fitness events, and our Fort4Fitness Fantasy of Lights 5K will help meet this need.”

Vocalist Shannon Persinger will be backed by pianist Eric Clancy’s jazz trio at a Marine Corps League Toys for Tots fundraiser at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Cottage Event Center.

Clancy, a former adjunct professor of jazz theory

at Huntington University, has been a professional musician since the 1990s.

Besides performing, Clancy teaches piano at the Sweetwater Academy in Fort Wayne. He has been featured several times at Jeff Fest in Huntington, is a frequent artist at area jazz venues including Club Soda, and was featured at this year’s Three Rivers Festival accompanying

national R & B recording artist Ty Causey. Besides Clancy, the trio will include Michael Patterson on bass and Mark Vincenti on drums.

Toys for Tots will provide gifts for over 500 Huntington County young people, from infants to teenagers. The organization is collecting toys until mid-December utilizing drop-off boxes at various

businesses in the area.

The Toys for Tots program began in 1947 in Los Angeles when Major Bill Hendricks collected and distributed 5,000 toys to California youngsters.

HU Foundation breakfast to honor veterans

The Huntington University Foundation breakfast on Wednesday, Nov. 9, will honor area veterans and servicemen and women currently serving in the military. The theme for the breakfast will be “Service to God and Country.” All servicemen and women attending will be recognized and provided with a free breakfast. Prior RSVP is requested.

The breakfast is open to the public. It will begin at 7:45 a.m. in the Habecker Dining Commons and conclude by 9 a.m. The cost of the breakfast is $10, a portion of which will help support the Huntington County Grant.

Col. Patrick R. Renwick, commander of the Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing, Fort Wayne, will give an update on the guard’s mission, training, deployment, redeployment and overall readiness as the U.S. military continues the global war on terrorism.

Renwick began his military career in November 1988 with the United States Air Force when he was selected to attend Officer Training School at Medina Annex, Lackland AFB, Texas. He earned his commission of second lieutenant in March of 1989 and immediately attended Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma. Renwick served as a pilot and trainer and in other roles.

LIFE SKILLS

In 1998 he transitioned to the Indiana Air National Guard, 181st Fighter Wing, Terre Haute, as an assistant flight commander for the F-16C. Renwick has held various positions in the Indiana Air National Guard including weapons and tactics officer, assistant flight commander, 113th Fighter Squadron chief of training, 113th Air Support Operations Squadron commander, and 181st Intelligence Wing vice commander. He was promoted to his current rank in December of 2011.

Property tax bills due by Nov. 10 The Allen County Treasurer’s Office has issued a reminder to taxpayers that fall property taxes are due Thursday, Nov. 10.

Postmarks with the Nov. 10 date are accepted as “on time” payments.

“Long lines and long wait times can be avoided by paying early,” said Chief Deputy William Royce. “We move the lines as quickly as we can but

paying early, by mail or using one of our online payment methods is the quickest way to pay.”

This year the Nov. 10 tax due date is followed by Veterans Day on Friday and the Treasurer’s office will be closed. Fall tax coupons were included in the spring tax billing; bills are not mailed out in fall. If a new bill is needed, one can be printed from the Treasurer’s

website or by request.

Many payment options are available; by mail, electronically through the Treasurer’s website, by credit card, payments can be dropped off in the Child Support drop box on the south end of the courthouse, or pay in person at the Treasurer’s office.

Taxpayers may pay by phone by dialing 1 (877) 690-3729 and using juris-

diction code 7693; then just follow the prompts.

FWCC Harvest Concert builds on historic texts Eight Fort Wayne Children’s Choir ensembles will perform in the Harvest Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in the Auer Performance Hall, IPFW Rhinehart Music Center, 2101 E. Coliseum Blvd., Fort Wayne.

This is the first formal concert of the 2016-17 choir season.

The Allen County Council of Veterans Organizations is sponsoring its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, 4000 Parnell Ave., Fort

Wayne.

The ceremony follows a parade to celebrate veterans.

Parade lineup and checkin begins at 10 a.m. at the North Side Park parking lot west of the park and at the intersection of Parnell and Frickie Avenues.

The parade steps off at

11 a.m., from the corner of State Boulevard and Parnell Avenue. The parade will proceed to the Coliseum. The Coliseum’s Memorial Hall at the Veteran’s Plaza will hold the ceremony, which will include a wreath laying and three speakers. All are welcome to attend.

Byron Health Center welcomed Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne in celebrating two milestones.

Henry presented Byron Executive Director Deb Lambert with a proclamation celebrating Byron’s 50 years as a licensed nursing home.

Rotary Club President Candace Schuler and Henry shared with Lambert in opening the 100th Little Free Library.

Byron Health Center has been a part of the community since 1853, has been in the same location since 1916, and has been a licensed nursing home for 50 years, Henry said in his proclamation.

“The former tuberculosis sanitarium has evolved into a long-termcare facility,” the Rotary Club said in a statement.

The mayor said Byron provides physical, emotional, mental and neurological services to patients young and old. “Each resident is recognized as an individual with unique needs who seeks and deserves to reach their optimal potential,” Henry said.

With the holiday season upon us, you may well be busier than usual.

However, by spending a few minutes reviewing your investment scenario of this past year, you can see where you’ve been, where you might be going, and what you need to do to keep moving forward toward your long-term financial goals.

“This is a really big operation,” Miller said.

“We’ll have around 150 volunteers doing everything from picking up food donations and separating canned goods and other groceries to loading boxes, helping clients get their food to their cars and breaking down cardboard food

containers for recycling.

When the people come in on the 10th, they’ll present their postcard, pick up a food box, bread, butter-spread and potatoes. Outside, they can choose what meat they want from the truck.

“The church has been doing this since the 1980s when Snider High School administrator Leon Youngpeter got things rolling. I’ve been involved for the past five years and it’s a great program. We’ve developed a pretty efficient system of loading boxes and getting them

upstairs. The place is a real madhouse a few days before the distribution, but everything moves along nicely when the clients come in between 9 a.m. and noon on the 10th.

Hardiek has primarily worked on promoting and organizing the event while Scott Thatcher, the other event coordinator, will be more in charge of the event on the day.

Santacon Fort Wayne can best be described as a pub crawl, though participants are not required to stay on a specific route and may visit the designated Santacon restaurants and bars in whatever order they choose. This not only keeps the locations from becoming overly crowded but allows for those participating to stay as long as they like at whatever locations they want.

The Santacon organization is a loosely-based group that cities all over can adapt to fit their needs. While it is convenient to use because of its established marketing and networking, not all Santacons are hosted as nonprofit benefits or are what Hardiek calls “userfriendly.” He is adamant that that will not be the

case for Fort Wayne’s Santacon.

“Some people [at the bigger Santacon events] become tasteless. We’re trying to make sure everyone is respectful on that day,” said Hardiek.

All of the proceeds during Santacon Fort Wayne will go to the Mizpah Shrine Patient Van Replacement Fund as part of the Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Chicago and Cincinnati. The hospitals serve patients in need of its services regardless of the patient’s ability to pay.

However, in addition to the cost of treatment, it is often difficult for patients and their families to afford and manage the long distances to the hospitals. To meet this need, Shriner-funded vans run daily to each hospital location. A van picks up the patient and their family, drives them to the hospital in Cincinnati or Chicago, waits for their appointments to end and then drives them back to their homes.

The long distances put thousands of miles on the Shriner’s vans. These vans often need extensive maintenance and eventually need replaced.

Santacon Fort Wayne’s proceeds directly assist in replacing the old vans for newer, more reliable ones.

Two from Thirst Project address Seton students Two representatives from the Thirst Project visited Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School to talk about the global water crisis and the group’s work building fresh water wells in African countries, India, and other countries.

Last school year, three then sixth-graders, Grace Steffan, Catherine Terrell and Gia Virgilio, organized a fundraiser, selling bracelets and raising awareness about the water crisis and the work of the

Thirst Project. The sixthgraders sold bracelets at school, in the lunchroom and at sports events, raising more than $1,300 for the Thirst Project.

Thirst Project Interns and “Road Warriors” Drew Penkala and Haley Thompson told the students about the work of the Thirst Project, which was founded in 2008 and is based in Los Angeles. The group has built 1,800 wells that serve 300,000 people, according to Penkala and

Thompson. They told of how local contractors drill and pump water from underground water sources. They talked about how in some countries, people do not have clean running water and must walk 3 to 4 miles to fetch water for their families. To demonstrate, the interns had a large jerry can filled with water

that weighs 44 lbs. They asked one student to carry it about 20 steps, and he agreed that carrying the water jug was heavy and hard work.

The Thirst Project representative thanked the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School students for supporting their work, and said that that the money raised went toward

building wells in Swaziland. According to the Thirst Project website, the group’s goal is to build enough fresh water wells so that the entire African country of Swaziland has clean drinking water by the year 2022. The Thirst Project also sponsors well-building projects in Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, India, El Salvador and

Colombia.

Thirst Project interns Penkala and Thompson are on a cross-country trip visiting schools that have supported the Thirst Project. After their visit to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School, next on their itinerary are schools in the states of Maryland, West Virginia and New York.

Fort Wayne Museum of Art brings in big names

Early 20th century artists – Picasso, Braque and Léger – now at art museum

Three of the greatest modern artists have come together in the Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s exhibition: “Picasso, Braque and Léger: 20th Century Modern Masters.”

The works available to view by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger give insight into an art period that marked a substantial break from the longstanding traditions of the art world, including the creation of cubism and collage and significant strides in printmaking, symbolism and surrealism.

beth Goings, “Modern Masters” dedicates a room to each artist. The artists’ artwork is placed next to work with a similar style and theme, rather than simply organized in chronological order. In this way, the art pieces work with and play upon the other, creating a cohesive and pleasing visual narrative, and not simply a historical timeline.

Though Braque and Picasso worked together before the outbreak of World War I and Léger utilized the duos’ creation of cubism, each artist has his own style and story to learn and understand. Picasso is

known worldwide for his symbolic and geometric style, and Braque also used these elements; however, Braque stands apart from Picasso through his utilization of advertisements in his work, making him a key part in the Pop art movement in the 1950s.

Additionally, Léger worked extensively in cubism like Picasso and Braque but focused intensely on the rise of machinery and technology after the Great War. These themes and styles are present in the “Modern Masters” exhibition and provide an understanding of the

Christmas in the Park will celebrate with activities focusing on the meaning of Christmas.

Arcola’s Citizen of Year calls for more volunteers

The Arcola Volunteer Fire Department honored Deanna “Dee Dee” Wilhelm as the Arcola Citizen of the Year. She accepted the surprise recognition Oct. 18 at the fire station.

“I didn’t have any clue there was going to be an award,” Wilhelm said. She attended at the urging of her husband, Steve, who retired after 30 years with the AVFD. Assistant Chief Trebor Trahin recited Wilhelm’s contributions, including creating thousands of reflective signs that mark addresses in the department’s service area.

“I made the signs from the time the firehouse started selling them,” Wilhelm told this newspaper. “There have been

lots of signs over the years.”

She said she appreciated the recognition, but said her work was never a burden. “I remember driving past signs and I thought ‘I remember doing that one’ and that was just kind of neat,” she said.

The longtime fire department volunteer and Carroll High School band mom said it’s time for the next group of volunteers to step forward. “I just think there’s a difference in the new generation from the generation that I’m a part of, and [they feel] there’s nothing in it for them,” she said.

“We need to change that mindset.”

“Their involvement with the Fire Department also began over 30 years ago.

She first was a spouse of a firefighter and all that goes with that, and then an active member of the fire department auxiliary.

Then, when the auxiliary became inactive, they more than once were called to organize and provide food and drinks to the firefighters during extended calls, which meant quickly calling others to help, contacting businesses to donate supplies on the spot, and taking provisions to the scene.”

Trahin said the Wilhelms even brought their three children to the firehouse to play the patients for CPR training.

“She, too, learned some of those skills during their training and has an accredited CPR save under her belt,” he said.

Trahin said Wilhelm’s most visible contribution was making the reflective signs for more than 20 years. “On the way home tonight, when you notice her handiwork along the roads and her dedication to the community, you will know the person who made them,” he said.

Public invited to exhibit of winter theme artwork

Every eight weeks, the Fort Wayne Artists Guild fills the art gallery at Heritage of Fort Wayne with paintings and drawings to be enjoyed by the residents as well as the public.

This month, the gallery is filled by the Fort Wayne Artists Guild’s Winter Exhibition. This particular exhibition is a collection of work by 20 artists all following a winter theme.

Heritage of Fort Wayne

has worked with the group of artists since its opening, and even offers a meet-and-greet this year, giving the public a chance to meet the artists behind the Winter Exhibition.

The meet-and-greet will take place from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at Heritage of Fort Wayne, 5250 Heritage Parkway.

The exhibition itself will begin on Nov. 1, and last for eight weeks.

At its November meeting, the Guild will feature award-winning artist Douglas Runyan presenting “Painting

Snow.”

IPFW ponders what’s to come next

As the impact of recently announced cuts to programs and departments at Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne really sinks in, another possibility that once seemed distant looms closer and closer.

“I have a feeling that what’s going on is just a prelude to more handwringing, gnashing of teeth and fury, I guess,” said businessman Larry Lee, a member of the university’s community advisory council.

The boards of trustees of the two universities are expected to decide in December whether to adopt a recommendation from a legislative study committee to split the Fort Wayne operation into two.

“Everything we’ve been hearing is that it is far more likely to happen than not to happen,” said Jeff Malanson, an assistant professor of history.

“All of the administrators who have any connection to these conversations still make it clear that theoretically there is the chance that it could fall apart, or that something less extreme than a complete split could be the outcome. But as of now, all indications are that what IPFW is right now is not what we will be in fundamental ways a year from now.”

Lee expressed the same thought.

“We will not recognize what comes out of this as IPFW. It will be that fundamental of a change,” he said.

The Legislative Services Agency proposal would give IU the nursing and other health sciences programs and leave the rest to

Purdue. But Purdue, which manages the Fort Wayne campus, has also dictated cuts in programs, departments and degrees that were far more extensive than anticipated in earlier reports from the ongoing University Strategic Alignment Process.

“USAP was intended to be forward looking,” noted Carl Drummond, vice chancellor for academic affairs.

It fell to him to be the villain when he announced the cuts Oct. 25. The edict came from Purdue, but the specific decisions were made locally, he said.

IPFW has been experiencing a steady decline in enrollment. When the strategic plan was created, that trend was taken into consideration, “but we didn’t expect it would be as deep or last as long as it has,” Drummond acknowledged.

The problem with the board of trustees’ decision that more significant cuts were needed was that faculty members and the faculty senate were not consulted first, Malanson said.

“They did not engage in any reasonable effort at shared governance, they just made a declaration that more needed to be done,” he said.

“There’s been a lot of conversation about the ‘death of the humanities’, the liberal arts at IPFW, and I understand that reaction,” Drummond said.

While it is true that the humanities have some strong departments at IPFW, there are also those with just a handful of students. If there were ample resources, keeping them might be a possibility, “but in the current climate, we simply had to find some savings that

would impact the least number of students,” Drummond said.

The turmoil has also raised an idea that many in the community had long ago discarded, that IPFW be reinvented as an independent university, rather than continue as is or be torn apart.

“It is way beyond time that we should be relying on anybody else outside our sphere of influence deciding what’s in our best interest,” said Lee, a supporter of independence. “Are we going to continue to be an affordable, comprehensive university, the only one in northeast Indiana?

Or are we going to be restricting the humanities and gutting the arts and sciences colleges to the point that we are not a comprehensive university, we’re basically an engineering and business university with lip service to certain other disciplines?

“This matter is very important to me. I don’t know how many more years I have to live, but I cannot imagine anything more important to the welfare of northeast Indiana than the issue of governance at IPFW.” Although it probably has not been nurtured or polished as it should have been by Purdue and IU, “It is our greatest asset,” Lee added.

The original intent of the LSA study, as decreed by the Indiana General Assembly, was to define what its redesignation of the campus as a “multisystem metropolitan” university would look like. That was believed by many to be an opening to produce a greater level of independence; the suggestion of a split into two separate regional campuses came late in the process.

Although both IU and Purdue were expected to increase their investment as they increased their ownership in their pieces of the pie, no details have been released.

“I don’t care how much Purdue invests now to quell the storm, there’s going to be issues that come up year after year after year,” Lee said.

The downside to independence has always been that a degree from a Fort Wayne university would not carry the same weight as the IU and Purdue degrees IPFW students now receive, at least not in its early years.

“It is the best of both worlds,” Malanson said.

Faculty leaders are considering a variety of perspectives for what all this means for the university’s future, and are trying to work with the administration to find the best way to move forward in the best interests of everybody, Malanson added.

Pre-K pilot lays groundwork for expansion

Indiana’s preschool pilot program, On My Way Pre-K, produced some immediate, positive results for the children’s families in its first year.

About 57 percent of the children attending On My Way Pre-K had not attended any child care or preschool program in the prior year. So, once they were enrolled, the family caregivers were able to return to work or school, according to a report released in October by the Family and Social Services Administration’s Office of Early Childhood and Out of School Learning.

The 4-year-olds participating in the pilot program in five Hoosier counties are being tracked and evaluated

by Purdue University to determine the success of the program, which was implemented after

national studies showed early education keeps children on track long-term.

Allen is the only northeast Indiana county participating in the pilot.

When the families of the participants were asked “Has having your child in On My Way Pre-K helped you ___?”

51 percent of the families said they had increased work or school hours; 35 percent said they obtained new employment; and 33 percent said they began school or job training.

“There is no requirement for a parent to work to participate in the program,” said Amanda Lopez, president of Transform Consulting Group, which is working with the state’s Early Learning Advisory Committee to help administer the program. “We are bookending the opportunities here.”

The pilot program is free to participants, and many low-income families it is serving could not afford child care options to return to work before.

These are families whose incomes are just high enough that they do not qualify for the federal Head Start program or for state grants that fund day care centers through the Paths of Quality program, Kruse said.

On My Way Pre-K awards grants to 4-yearolds from low-income families so they may receive high-quality education prior to kindergarten, according to the state’s report. Within Allen County, 214 children, who are at 127 percent of the federal poverty level, are being served in the 2016-17 school year, Lopez said.

Kruse noted that he visited the Fort Wayne pilot program and was impressed with the students and teachers, calling the work being done “excellent.”

While the FWMoA may not have the same quantity as the museums in Chicago, New York or Los Angeles, it still has the same quality. All of the artwork in the “Modern Masters” exhibition, organized by the Contemporary and Modern Print Exhibition, was lent by an anonymous collector who does not allow the show to travel very often, making it both exquisite and rare. The FWMoA is also the national home and director of the American Cut Glass Association’s Permanent Collection.

“Modern Masters” is available to view at the FWMoA until Nov. 27.

Fort Wayne seeks county ambulance pact

The Fort Wayne Fire Department wants to take over and reshape ambulance service in Allen County to improve patient outcomes while reducing costs. But, the private company providing those services disagrees, saying the changes would drive up costs without significantly improving outcomes.

The changes proposed by the Fire Department would include increasing the number of ambu-

lances in the system and putting a paramedic on every fire engine responding to a Priority 1, or life threatening, ambulance call.

Paramedics Plus, based in Tyler, Texas, wants city officials and City Council members to consider the cost of reshaping the system in that way and “identify if that is really a need or a want,” said Ron Schwartz, its president.

Three Rivers Ambulance Authority contracts with Paramedics Plus to provide the city’s

ambulance service on a public utility model. All of the city’s ambulance costs are covered by fees for service, and that would continue under the changes proposed by the fire department.

TRAA covered the cost last year by collecting $11.5 million in service fees, and Fort Wayne Fire Chief Eric Lahey estimates the changes he proposed would reduce costs of the service to $10.6 million.

With $1,300 as a base fee, plus mileage costs, TRAA has some of

the highest ambulance fees in Indiana, Lahey said. Much of the cost reduction under the Fire Department’s plan would be achieved by investing in the system the amount Paramedics Plus now takes as profit, he said.

Of the 40,000 calls Paramedics Plus handled last year, 8,000 were Priority 1, which meant the ambulances were accompanied by fire engines. That would continue with Priority 1 calls under the fire department’s plan.

Sacred Time occurs for 30 minutes on weekdays and one hour each Sunday, when Mass is celebrated at the USF Main Campus. During Sacred Time, regardless of participation, no on-campus university-sponsored activities are scheduled for or by students or employees.

students’ and employees’ spiritual nourishment,” said USF Campus Ministry Director Scott Opperman, “and it enhances our Catholic, Franciscan identity.

Given the complications of scheduling classes, meetings, and activities, Sacred Time is innovative and bold. It reveals our priorities. Everything else is scheduled around Mass, not vice versa, which is the norm.”

Fish Fry to benefit missions in Jamaica The Huntertown Lions Club and the Huntertown United Methodist Church Jamaican mission team will hold a fish and tenderloin dinner on Friday, Nov. 11, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at The Third Place, 1601 W. Cedar Canyons Road.

Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for kids aged 2-10 and free for children under 2. In celebration of Veterans day, there is a $1 discount for all those veterans attending.

Proceeds from the dinner will assist the Jamaican mission team with supplies needed for their trip in February 2017 to Whitehouse, Jamaica.

Ground broken on Six Mile Creek Trail Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry, New Haven Mayor Terry McDonald, representatives from Fort Wayne Trails and community and neighborhood leaders have broken ground on the Six Mile Creek Trail.

The groundbreaking, held Wednesday, Oct. 19, was for phase one, a nearly one-mile long trail expansion from South Phoenix Parkway at Southtown Centre to the intersection of Tillman Road and Lemar Drive.

When the full, multiphase trail is complete it will contribute significantly to connectivity in the community by providing a 26-mile continuous loop linking Moser Park in New

Haven, Fort Wayne’s Rivergreenway and the Six Mile Trail.

“Investing in trails is critical to the current and future success of our community and region,” Henry said in a statement. “It’s great to see trail development in southeast Fort Wayne as we continue our commitment to enhancing quality of life amenities that make our City a point of destination for individuals, families, and businesses.”

Added McDonald, “We are excited about the Six Mile Creek Trail expansion. Our residents are eager to have more connectivity that will enhance recreational, leisure, exercise opportunities for pedestrians,

joggers and bicyclists.

I know connecting with the region through the trail network will strengthen our community and position us well for the future.”

This first phase of the Six Mile Creek is an investment of $1,298,050 and includes design, right of way acquisition and construction by local contractor, Brooks Construction.

The project is federally funded through the Northeast Indiana Regional Coordinating Council with a portion coming from local entities including a $100,000 donation presented at the groundbreaking by Fort Wayne Trails Incorporated.

“Our mission is to

support trail growth and usage throughout the trail network and we are pleased to make a contribution to aid in safe connectivity for this important trail that will one day offer a unique asset of a 26-mile continuous loop,” said Kent Castleman, executive director of Fort Wayne Trails Inc. “Besides completing the loop, the Six Mile Creek Trail offers a unique blend of nature and culture as it passes through urban, suburban and rural areas.”

Future phases of the trail will run east along

Tillman Road to the Trier Ditch, which was historically known as the Six Mile Creek.

The remainder of the loop route is still being planned but will generally follow the Trier Ditch to Moser Park and the New Haven Community Center where it will connect to the eastern end of the Rivergreenway in New Haven.

When completed, the Six Mile Creek Trail will connect with four New Haven parks and several residential neighborhoods in southeast Fort Wayne.

400 walk to ease grief, remember lost infants

Infants lost before or shortly after birth were remembered Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Walk to Remember for Perinatal and Infant Loss at Huntertown Family Park.

This free event included a memorial walk, a balloon release and a live band. Event coordinator Dana Wyant described the event as “a place where parents can come remember their baby and get support from their family and friends and the community also.”

Registration increased from a little over 100 to over 400 for this third year of the event. The event also enjoyed the generosity of 50 sponsors. “We got more money than we could possibly need,” Wyant said, “so we really hope to put that back into the community and provide some resources for local hospitals that just don’t have the resources for perinatal loss.”

In the midst of the memorial walk was Sarah Richendollar. Being her first year at the event, she chose to come to support a friend as well as remember the four babies she has lost due to miscarriages. “(This event) lets you see that you’re not alone,” Richendollar said. “It’s a taboo, you don’t talk about (miscarriages).”

The memorial walk provides a place for people like Richendollar to talk about their experiences and surround themselves with those

going through similar struggles. She reminded the community that “you just need to be there for people when they might not tell you they need help.”

This event is for those who have lost an infant but also for those who support the cause, such as House of Hopes volunteer Heathyr Harkless. House of Hopes is a nonprofit organization that offers free photography for various causes including the memorial walk. Having a strong emotional connection to the event, she said, “I personally have not experienced a miscarriage or a child loss of my own, but there’s tons of our clients with House of Hopes [for whom] I’ve captured the final moments of those little babies’ lives.” Those babies are the reason she came to and supports the event. “It’s so often an issue that isn’t talked about,” Harkless said.

“They know they’re not alone, but it’s different knowing it versus seeing it [at this event].”

The main goals are remembrance and awareness. “I just hope that this really opens the eyes of the community that infant loss does still happen in this day and age, more than people realize,” Wyant explained. “We just want to break down barriers.”

For those who attended the walk and for those who are dealing with perinatal and infant loss, Wyant said. “We haven’t forgotten your baby.”

Fun event nets $29,000 for Literacy Alliance The Literacy Alliance held its third annual Laughs for Literacy fundraising event, a Twisted Colleague-Wed Game, at Parkview Mirro Center for Research.

Eleven teams competed as their fans cheered them on. Office colleagues, as opposed to newlyweds, were asked questions about one another in a twist on “The Newlywed Game.” More than 200 attendees enjoyed the event. Following the Colleague-Wed Game, comedic hypnotist Rusty

The event raised more than $29,000 to provided literacy services to those in Allen County.

Local seamstresses, who have been making hundreds of dresses for the Little Dresses for Africa program, will display their work. Visitors are urged to write a note and donate money for postage to send the garments around the world.

People will also have the opportunity to express their thanks to law enforcement officers

by penning a note that will be attached to the gift bags of candy to Fort Wayne Police and Allen County Sheriff officers.

A decorated red, white and blue Christmas tree, which will be given to the Veterans Administration Hospital, will include personal notes written by festival attendees to thank veterans for their service.

In addition, folks will be able to learn ideas for constructing crafts and food items for sharing as Christmas gifts. There will be balloons for kids and free cookies, lemonade, coffee and hot chocolate. Donated books, CDs and DVDs will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Christmas in the Park, which is sponsored by the Christ Child Festival committee, is an all-volunteer activity. The Literacy Alliance works to help adults improve their education and achieve their high school equivalency diploma. All classes are offered free to students.

The organization operates seven neighborhood-based learning centers and services, which include basic adult education, small

group reading classes and prep for the High School Equivalency diploma (formerly GED). The agency uses professional teachers and trained tutors, and coordinates outreach services including free child care and transportation.

The Literacy Alliance began in the 1960s as the Fort Wayne Literacy

Coalition, which worked to match volunteer tutors with adults who wanted to improve reading skills. In 1988, the group merged with the Northeast Indiana Literacy Council to become the Three Rivers Literacy Alliance and services were expanded. by Harold Altman eventually became the first step toward an extensive collection of original artwork for William Roebel and his wife Mary Ann. Some of the artists in their collection include Renoir, Cortès, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Whistler, Haring, Neiman, Picasso, Renoir, Rembrandt, and Dali.
