Lighting choices: Consider task, ambience and accent Q. We are planning a kitchen remodel this year and have been talking to a local contractor about the project. We have come up with a kitchen layout and have settled on a cabinet manufacture and counter choice. Our project is not elaborate and we are on a budget, but we want it to work for us for years to come. My question is the electric JEFF DEAHL that is planned is basically a light over the island and a series of can lights around the perimeter. There’s a light over the dining room table that is open to the kitchen. Is this adequate and is there

anything else that should be considered? — Lauren in Butler A. Today’s kitchens serve multiple functions, everything from meal preparation to entertaining of friends around islands and peninsulas. when you’re cooking and cleaning. If using can lights, a common mistake is to locate the cans too far out into the kitchen ceiling to provide general lighting. Now when they are on and your’re trying to work at the counter you are shading the light from your work area. If the cans are located directly over the edge of the counters the light will illuminate the work area. Take your plans to a lighting store and see if they have any other input or get the suggestions of a design professional because, yes, whatever you decide you will live with for years to come.
