Lighting choices: Consider task, ambience and accent Q. We are planning a kitchen remodel this year and have been talking to a local contractor about the project. We have come up with a kitchen layout and have settled on a cabinet manufacture and counter choice. Our project is not elaborate and we are on a budget, but we want it to work for us for years to come. Something to think about is there are three basic types of kitchen lighting — task, ambient and accent. It doesn’t have to cost more, and better designed lighting will save energy in the long run. They all are very important and should reflect the style of kitchen. The more open the space the more general overall lighting is needed. The higher the ceiling, the closer task lighting wants to be to your work area. Employ outdoor natural lighting windows, skylights and a patio door in the dining room for everyday use. Accent for nighttime or entertaining and direct lighting for

when you’re cooking and cleaning. If using can lights, a common mistake is to locate the cans too far out into the kitchen ceiling to provide general lighting. Now when they are on and your’re trying to work at the counter you are shading the light from your work area. If the cans are located directly over the edge of the counters the light will illuminate the work area. Take your plans to a lighting store and see if they have any other input or get the suggestions of a design professional because, yes, whatever you decide you will live with for years to come.
