COLUMBIA CITY — Four times this year Whitley County Commissioner Don Amber motioned to allow the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department to dispatch Lutheran EMS in South Whitley. All four times that motion died for the lack of a second. Twelve times South Whitley Town Council President Randy Cokl pleaded with the board and
Sheriff Marc Gatton has taken the podium, as have residents from the South Whitley area, in support of allowing the county to dispatch for the EMS. Each time, Commissioners George Schrumpf and Tom Western stood firm in their decision against allowing Whitley County to dispatch the Lutheran EMS. Though the Commissioners have been under fire, they say many factors play into their decisions.

Terms of the contract
Primarily, Schrumpf and Western do not support the plan because they are abiding by the county’s existing contract with Parkview, which dispatches all existing ambulance services in Whitley County. For Western, it is an issue of ethics. “Before I was a commissioner, [the commissioners] worked nine to 10 months on putting together a new EMS contract,” he said. “(They) spent a ton

of time on it. We have a contract that is in place with Parkview, and so it would be totally unethical to break that contract — then we’d open ourselves up to a lawsuit. We have a contract.”
Schrumpf sees it as not only an ethical issue but a legal issue as well. Legal counsel advised them not to break Parkview’s dispatching contract. In several of the public meetings, concerned residents and Cokl brought up the “backdoor out,” a way the commissioners can break the contract. While there is indeed an out, Schrumpf does not currently see it as necessary See EMS, Page 2

COLUMBIA CITY — The United Way of Whitley County’s 2017-18 campaign is underway. The official campaign kick-off took place at the United Way Day of Caring on Tuesday. “We have a fantastic group of community leaders working on our campaign team this year. Several who have been involved for many years but also new volunteers, as well, are looking for ways to connect with our community and give back through serving on the campaign team,” said Cindy Baker, executive director of United Way of Whitley County. Pete Allen and Katie Dewitt will serve as co-chairs this year, and Jo Robertson will serve as vice-chair for the campaign. lead chairperson and a vice-chairperson who is very involved, as well, but sits back to see how the entire campaign process works so they then can move into the co-chairperson role the following year,” Baker said in a statement. “Creating a strong leadership
COLUMBIA CITY — The American Red Cross is calling on Hoosiers to help out fellow Americans suffering from the effects of the past month’s natural disasters. Whitley County will offer four Red Cross blood drives in the next month — one in Churubusco and three in Columbia City. As the American Red Cross responds to wildfires and hurricanes, eligible donors are reminded that giving blood during National Preparedness Month in September is one way to help ensure the Red Cross is prepared to respond to patient emergencies across the country every day. Hurricane Irma forced the cancellation of dozens of Red Cross blood drives in the Southeast, resulting in more than 2,100 uncollected blood and platelet donations. Natural disasters like hurricanes can disrupt blood drives and prevent donors from giving, but hospital patients still depend on lifesaving transSee RED CROSS, Page 9

According to a police report, Grubbs allegedly
fled police in his step-father’s truck on U.S. 30 at about 10:45 a.m. Sept. 16. The report, written by State Police Trooper Joseph McLaughlin, alleges Grubbs was driving 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. When McLaughlin attempted to pull over Grubbs, McLaughlin said he began a high-speed chase that went from about County Road 450 West and U.S. 30, onto Lincolnway West and Buisness 30 and through downtown Columbia
City during the Whitley County Farmer’s Market on the Courthouse square. McLaughlin estimated Grubbs was allegedly driving about 65-70 miles per hour in the downtown area. “Due to public safety concerns, I decided to terminate the pursuit,” McLaughlin said. Later, police received a 911 call that Grubbs was in a church parking lot at Lincolnway East and County Road 300 East. See COURT, Page 3
