Artist-in-residence progrAm of the 3rd UrAl indUstriAl BienniAl

Писать каталог, когда проект завершен, — это большая удача, но в то же время серьезный вызов. С одной стороны, все уже произошло, и, казалось бы, нужно просто зафиксировать факты. С другой — мечты о произведениях всегда более лаконичны и стройны, чем ход их создания и будни, прожитые в окружении зрителей. Программа Арт-резиденций 3-й Уральской индустриальной биеннале — это прежде всего процесс, в котором важны все этапы: встреча художников друг с другом, с регионом, с заводами; рождение идеи, ее развитие, ее воплощение — или невозможность претворить ее в жизнь. Какой бы ни была эта невозможность: технической, политической, административной, временной, эстетической, финансовой… — она становится неотъемлемой частью проекта, ориентированного на эксперимент. Тем, как я строю эту книгу, я хочу показать, что вся наша работа — это процесс, процесс взаимодействия с живыми людьми, пусть кого-то из них мы называем «художниками», кого-то — «заводами», кого-то — «партнерами», а кого-то — «зрителями».

Еще летом 2014-го года был объявлен конкурс для участия в программе, а через год художники, чьи проекты были выбраны и которые были приглашены, начали совместную резиденцию. В период с 13 по 25 июля в рамках 3-й Уральской индустриальной биеннале прошла одновременная резиденция для: Александра Морозова (Россия), Владимира Марина (Россия), Жени Мачневой (Россия), Федора Телкова (Россия), группы «Открытое Пространство» (Юлии Костеревой, Юрия Кручака, Украина), Стефана Тиде (Франция), Хесуса Паломино (Испания), Якопо Мандича (Италия), Baltensperger + Siepert (Давида Зиперта и Штефана Бальтенспергера, Швейцария), Бернхарда Рэна (Австрия), Ars Virtua (Ирины Котюргиной, Никиты Рокотяна, Сергея Наймушина, Регины Муфтаховой, Жени Чайки, Россия/США). Мы провели вместе две недели, две недели в постоянных разъездах на автобусе, в поисках индустриального вдохновения и основания для нашего художественного высказывания. За это время мы много узнали друг о друге, о тех местах, по которым пролегал наш путь, и мы придумали красивые проекты, часть из которых нам удалось реализовать для Итоговой выставки программы Арт-резиденций. Это была большая работа и очень важный совместный опыт. И, задав художникам именно те вопросы, которые я задала, я хотела поделиться этим опытом, сохранив прямую речь с ее эмоциональными грамматикой и пунктуацией. To compose a catalogue when the project is already finished is a piece of good luck but at the same time a serious challenge. On the one hand, everything has already happened and it seems that all you have to do is to record the facts. On the other, the ideas of artworks are always more laconic and neat than the process of their creation and the days they lived surrounded by the public.

The Artist-in-Residence program of the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial is first of all a process, where every stage is important — artists meeting each other, the region, the industrial plants, and then the birth of an idea, its development, its implementation — or the impossibility to realize it. Whatever this impossibility might be — technical, political, administrative, temporal, aesthetic, financial… — it becomes an integral part of the experimentoriented project.

With the way I compose this book I want to show that all our work is a process — the process of interaction with living human beings, some of whom we call “artists”, some — “factories”, some — “partners”, some — “public”.

As early as in summer 2014 the call for participation was announced, and a year later the artists whose projects were chosen and who were invited to come, started the joint residence.

The concurrent residence for the artists of the program took place within the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial from 13 to 25 July. The following artist participated: Alexander Morozov (Russia), Vladimir Marin (Russia), Zhenya Machneva (Russia), Fyodor Telkov (Russia), Open Place (Yulia Kostereva, Yuriy Kruchak, Ukraine), Stephane Thidet (France), Jesus Palomino (Spain), Jacopo Mandich (Italy), Baltensperger + Siepert (Stefan Baltensperger, David Siepert, Switzerland), Bernhard Rehn (Austria), Ars Virtua (Irina Kotyurgina, Nikita Rokotyan, Sergey Naimushin, Rigina Muftakhova, Zhenya Chaika, Russia/USA).

We spent two weeks together — two weeks of constant traveling by bus in search for industrial inspiration and a basis for our artistic expression. In this time we learned a lot about each other and the places on our way. We came up with ideas for beautiful projects, some of which we were able to realize for the Artist-in-Residence Program Final Exhibition. It was a large amount of work and an important shared experience. Asking the artists the questions I asked, I wanted to share this experience, preserving the artists’ direct speech with its original grammar and punctuation.

Было лИ у ВАС СЧАСТлИВоЕ ДЕТСТВо?

Женя Мачнева: Конечно! (В любом случае). Федор Телков: Да. Стефан Тиде: Хотел бы я знать, что определяет конец детства, чтобы ответить на этот вопрос. Мне кажется, я все еще играю, как ребенок, только со взрослыми последствиями. Штефан Бальтенспергер: Да. Давид Зиперт: Я провел свое детство с Гензелем и Гретель, играя в лесу. Так что оно определенно было волнующим! Анастасия Есаулкова: Плохие моменты вытесняются из памяти со временем, оставляя только общее ощущение жизни. Однако мое детство было скорее тревожным, чем счастливым.

Анастасия Баранова: Да, счастливое детство под песни Beatles, Tina Turner и Rolling Stones. Родители — сумасшедшие фантазеры. Любимые игрушки, несчетное количество мячей, которые гоняли всем двором, деревья, ломящиеся от фруктов, руки, черные от йода ореховой скорлупы осенью. Бесконечно яркие впечатления, как калейдоскоп. Закончилось приходом солнечного затмения. Сергей Наймушин: Не знаю. Никита Рокотян: Сдавали бутылки, играли в «Дэнди». Ирина Котюргина: Да! Абсолютно! Мое детство проходило в таком районе такого города, где вечером был слышен выдыхающий все напряжение дня заводской гудок — он оповещал людей о том, что рабочий день окончен, а меня о том, что пора сворачивать игры и накрывать на стол родителям, которые возвращались с работы. А ночью были слышны взрывы со стороны НТМК, где, насколько мне известно, взрывали шлак, чтобы измельчить его. Но прежде всегда подавалась затяжная сирена,

разрывавшая тишину ночи. Эти звуки и пейзажи останутся со мной навсегда. Но мое детство в Тагиле правда было счастливым: мне очень повезло с воспитателями и учителями там! Регина Муфтахова: Да, согласно моим представлениям у меня было счастливое детство — любящие родители, бабушки и дедушки, друзья, игры в прятки, вышибалы и другие, любимые сказки, книги, игрушки, мультфильмы, фильмы, поездки в лес за грибами и ягодами, путешествия. Женя Чайка: Наверняка, но я этого не помню. Владимир Марин: Да. Овраги, крапива, гаражи, репей, девяностые. Мне понравилось. Якопо Мандич: Да, мое детство было довольно счастливым. Бернхард Рэн: Да, я бы так сказал. Хесус Паломино: Я всегда считал, что в детстве есть что-то против самой жизни. Я связывал это негативное отношение с общественными реалиями своей страны, Испании, потому что я родился во времена диктатуры, в 1969 году. Режим Франко определял четкие социальные роли для мужчин, женщин и, конечно, детей. Мужчины приносили деньги в дом и пусть и пассивно, но занимали лидерскую позицию в уму непостижимой модели семейных отношений, построенной в обществе, в котором не существовало чувственного воспитания и царствовал жесткий запрет на любые формы эротических проявлений, даже на нежность. Женщины занимались хозяйством и рожали детей, их образования хватало разве на то, чтобы преклоняться перед мужем, растить детей и помалкивать. А дети — чем были дети? Я думаю, именно на нас, детей, вылилась вся фрустрация этого общества взрослых, вынужденных жить, не имея

Zhenya Machneva: Of course! (Anyways).

Feodor Telkov: Yes. Stephane Thidet: I would need to know what defines the end of a childhood to answer this. I think I still play like a child, but with adult consequences.

Stefan Baltensperger: Yes. David Siepert: Spent my childhood with Hansel and Gretel, playing in the woods.

So it definitely was an exciting one!

Ansatasia Esaulkova: The bad points are displaced from memory with time, leaving only a general sense of life.

However, my childhood was more disturbing than happy. Lonely forest walks and sunset on the Ural rock.

Anastasia Baranova: Infinitely bright impressions like a kaleidoscope with songs of Tina Turner, Beatles and Rolling Stones, full of delicious southern nature.

Sergey Naimushin: I don’t know.

Nikita Rokotyan: Getting bottles to recycle, playing Dandy.

Irina Kotyurgina: Yes! Indeed! I spent my childhood in such a district of such a city where at the end of the day the factory siren was spreading final relief all over the people telling them that the

working time is over and me — that it’s time to cut off the games and cover the table for parents coming from their job.

And at the nighttime I could here the explosions from NTMK, where, as I was told, they were detonating slag to make it smaller. These sounds and landscapes will stay with me forever, but my childhood in Tagil really was a happy one: I was lucky to get good teachers and tutors there.

Rigina Muftakhova: According to my ideas, I had a happy childhood; parents who loved me, grandmothers, grandfathers, friends, hide-and-seek and dodge ball games, others, favorite fairytales, books, toys, cartoons, films, trips to the woods for mushrooms and berries, journeys…

Zhenya Chaika: For sure, but I don’t remember it.

Vladimir Marin: Yes. Ravines, nettle, garages, bur, the 90s. I liked.

Jacopo Mandich: Yes, my childhood was quite happy.

Bernhard Rehn: Yes, I would say so.

Yuriy Kruchak: Yes. Yulia Kostereva: Yes. Alexander Morozov: It is impossible to give simple answer to simple question.

At the moment I recognized my mortality my childhood got the happy one.

Jesus Palomino: Well, I have always considered that there was something against life in the childhood. I have always related this negativity with the social and political reality of my country Spain, because, in fact, I was born under the rule of a dictator in 1.969. Franco´s regime defined clear social roles for men, women and, of course, children. Men were the money providers and the passive leading figures

возможности критически осмыслить довлеющие над ними невыносимые патриархальные образцы. Конечно, многие семьи привыкли к такой замкнутой реальности… Но прямым следствием такого положения вещей было плохое обращение с детьми в любом социальном поле (семья, школа, церковь, улица и т. д.), непонимание детского способа мыслить и потребностей и, в конечном итоге, полное презрение к возможностям детского воображения. Улица была дикими джунглями, где дети дурно обращались друг с другом и где грубость была самым распространенным языком; школа была местом идеологического тренинга, где учителя пребывали в растерянности, не зная, чему учить, и не имея никакого педагогического проекта. С помощью телевидения и средств массовой информации государство только усиливало изоляцию граждан; культурной жизни все равно что не существовало… Вы скажете, что я нарисовал ужасную картину общества, но, поверьте, так все и было. Добавьте к этому то, что мои родители не смогли избежать своих внутренних проблем как пара, и вы не удивитесь, что я очень рано узнал, что слово «ад» начинается с буквы «А». Я тотчас понял, насколько предсказуемо, скучно, глупо, жестоко это общество. Поэтому в поисках хоть какого-то пути замещения я совершенно естественно оказался

очарован тем, что мы называем искусством: книги моего отца, картинки в энциклопедиях матери, музыка, которую передавали по радио… Моя мама любила музыку, часто она организовывала милые музыкальные вечера, в которых мы с братом участвовали, когда были детьми. Моя мама по-прежнему очень хорошо поет. Мой папа всегда был очень умным читателем. Частный доступ в мое собственное пространство культуры и удовольствия определил мою жизнь, когда я был ребенком, а затем подростком, уже более сносным, живым и человечным. Так я вижу этот период своей жизни сейчас. Скажем так, мой выход в мир, если принять во внимание все эти неприятные составляющие, которые я описал выше в качестве присущих насильственному фашистскому обществу и проблемной семье, не был овеян радостным цветением. Несмотря на это я сейчас в Екатеринбурге, делаю здесь то, что люблю больше всего. Это значит, что в данный момент мое детство больше не существует. Это всего лишь прошлое, материал для искусства и литературы. Не более того! Юрий Кручак: Да. Юлия Костерева: Да. Александр Морозов: На простые вопросы невозможно просто ответить. В тот момент, когда я осознал собственную смертность, мое детство стало счастливым.

Женя Мачнева: Мне кажется, я могу жить в автобусе. У меня хорошая практика.

Стефан Тиде: Как и все в жизни: зависит от того, кто у руля.

Давид Зиперт: Зависит от кресла и пилота. Не перестаю надеяться, что когда-нибудь я буду ездить только на сиденьях первого класса.

Штефан Бальтенспергер: Раньше я думал, это зависит только от автобуса,

Анастасия Есаулкова: Зависит от степени важности (около 12 ч).

Федор Телков: Четыре часа.

of an uncomprehensive model of family within a society built on an unexisting sentimental education and a cruel rejection for any kind of erotic expression, and even tenderness. Women were housewives and baby breeders educated to just bow their husbands, raise the children and keep their mouth shut. And, children, what were the children? We children, I guess, were in many cases the repository of frustration, the garbage bin of that whole society of adults forced to live uncritically under unbearable patriarchal patterns. Of course, that many families adapted themselves to such a narrow reality… but the effects of that were the mistreatment of children at any realm of society (family, school, church, street, etc.); the non comprehension of child´s mind and needs; and last but not least, the quasi total contempt for children´s imagination.

The street was a rough jungle where kids used to mistreat each other and where brusqueness was the common language; the schooling was ideological training where teachers were lost with nothing to teach in schools lacking any kind of pedagogical project; TV and media were State´s tool reinforcing the isolation of citizens; cultural life was almost unexisting; and so on and so forth. It seems to be a terrible picture of that society… but, believe me, it was.

Added to that, my parents couldn´t scape to their own contradictions and personal struggles as a couple… I very early learnt that the word Hell starts with the letter H. I immediately understood as well how predictable, boring, stupid and cruel that society was… Hence, as an only way out and as a compensatory experience, I became naturally mesmerized by that thing we call art through my father´s books, the pictures in my mother´s encyclopedias, the music broadcasted in the radio, and my Mom´s love for music that used to organize funny musical sessions with myself and my brothers when we were kids. My Mom still is a very good singer. My Dad was a very smart reader. That private access to my microspace of culture and pleasure made my life as a kid, and later as a teenager, more bearable, playful, and human. This is my actual view of that period of my life as I could recall it now. Let´s say that my «exit to the world», taking into account all those harsh ingredients that I could define straight forward as belonging to an abusive fascist society plus family troubles, did not help to happiness flowering… Despite all that, I am here in Ekaterinburg doing what I love the most. And that means that that time, my childhood, doesn´t exist anymore. It is just the past; material for fiction and literature. No more than that!!!

Никита Рокотян: Максимальное время составляет 4,5 часа, после чего следует перерыв не менее 45 минут, если только не начинается период отдыха. Во время перерыва запрещено совершение любой работы. Ирина Котюргина: Автобуса час. Кружка за кружкой кофе. Жди остановку. Женя Чайка: Сколько угодно, подумываю получить права нужной категории. Регина Муфтахова: Не больше 5–6 часов.

я должен сказать, что путешествия на автобусе не доставляют мне никакого удовольствия. Я предпочитаю самолеты и поезда. Еще я люблю управлять мотоциклом и велосипедом. Но, конечно, на велосипеде ты далеко не уедешь… В общем, лично для меня чем меньше часов в автобусе, тем лучше, хотя я могу на это пойти, если нет другого выхода… Но я не люблю автобусы, так что лично мне и одна минута в автобусе не покажется счастьем. Юрий Кручак: 24 часа и столько же в обратную сторону. Юлия Костерева: 48 часов. Александр Морозов: Пойду от последнего — не день, зависит от возможности вытянуть ноги.

Владимир Марин: Достаточно много. Все зависит от конечного пункта. Якопо Мандич: Автобус — наш второй дом. Бернхард Рэн: Трехчасовое путешествие — это уже довольно-таки долго, но если едешь дольше, уже начинаешь любоваться природой. Это впечатляет! Хесус Паломино: Чтобы быть честным,

КАКой ВАШ ИДЕАльНый ЗАВТРАК?

Женя Мачнева: Если очень рано проснуться, можно и без завтрака. Чуть позже хорошо съесть яичницу с обжаренными шампиньонами, луком и помидорами, посыпанную свежим базиликом или укропом. Федор Телков: Яичница, бутерброд с маслом и сыром, черный чай с лимоном. Стефан Тиде: Все, что угодно, только не сычуаньский перец. Штефан Бальтенспергер: Не меньше двух чашек очень крепкого кофе. Давид Зиперт: В идеале — смузи

из инжира, банана и авакадо и немного вкусного кофе с кардамоном. В реальности — тройной эспрессо и глоток молока. Анастасия Есаулкова: Мюсли с орехами, залитые еле теплым молоком, апельсин и сладкий капучино. Анастасия Баранова: Когда есть те, кому хочется улыбнуться. Лучше всего крепкий чай и возможность вспомнить о ночных снах. Запахи свежего утра и свежеиспеченного хлеба. Шум дождя или косые лучи солнца в открытые окна. Еда, за которой не нужно идти в магазин.

how MANY houRS CoulD You SPEND oN ThE BuS?

Zhenya Machneva: I think I can live on the bus. I am trained quite well.

Rigina Muftakhova: No more than 5–6 hours.

Feodor Telkov: 4.

Vladimir Marin: Quite many. Everything depends on the destination.

Stephane Thidet: Like everything in life it depends on the driver.

Stefan Baltensperger: Before I thought it depends only on the bus. Now there is also the argument of the street conditions.

David Siepert: Depends on the seat and the pilot. Still hope to get upgraded to a first class bus-seat one day.

Ansatasia Esaulkova: It depends on the degree of importance (about 12 hours).

Anastasia Baranova: It depends on the purpose of travel. With stops up to 10 days.

Sergey Naimushin: 2.

Nikita Rokotyan: The maximum time is 4 ½ hours followed by not less than 45 minutes of pause, if onlly the period of rest doesn’t begin. During the pause any work is highly forbidden.

Irina Kotyurgina: Hours of bus. / Сup by cup coffee. / Waiting for stop.

Zhenya Chaika: Any, thinking about getting the bus driver license.

Jacopo Mandich: The bus is our second home.

Bernhard Rehn: A 3hours trip is already getting long… but if it´s longer, you´d observe the ambient nature, it´s just impressive!

Jesus Palomino: If I have to be honest, and I should say that I do not enjoy to travel by bus. I prefer trains and airplanes. But, what I really love the most and enjoy to move are bikes, bicycles. But of course, you can´t go very far on a bike…

Personally, the less hours in a bus the better. I undertand, of course, when you have to do it because there´s no alternative ways. But, I do not like buses; hence, no any minute in a bus for me personally is perfect.

Yuriy Kruchak: 24 hours and same back.

Yulia Kostereva: 48 hours.

Alexander Morozov: Let me move from the last point — not a day, depends on the possibility to stretch the legs.

whAT Do You PREFER FoR BREAKFAST?

Zhenya Machneva: If you awake really early, no breakfast is needed. Slight afterwards it’s good to eat an omelet with fried champignons, onion and tomatoes, sprinkled with basilica or dill.

Ansatasia Esaulkova: Muesli with nuts, with a barely-warm milk, orange and sweet cappuccino.

Feodor Telkov: Scrambled eggs, bread and butter and cheese, black tea with lemon.

Anastasia Baranova: I like rich breakfasts with strong tea, to not think about food as much as possible during the day.

Stephane Thidet: Everything but Sichuan Pepper.

Sergey Naimushin: Croissant, coffee, muesli, toasts with cheese.

Stefan Baltensperger: At least two very strong Coffees.

Nikita Rokotyan: Tea and bagel, bread and mayonnaise.

David Siepert: Ideally I have an avocadofig-banana-smoothie, accompanied

Irina Kotyurgina: Done in the evening.

by some delicious cardamom coffee. But reality: triple espresso with a gulp of milk.

Сергей Наймушин: Круассан, кофе, мюсли, тосты с сыром. Никита Рокотян: Чай с бубликом, хлеб с майонезом.

Хесус Паломино: Мой любимый завтрак — это тосты из белого хлеба с оливковым маслом и солью плюс кофе с молоком.

Ирина Котюргина: Готов с вечера.

Юрий Кручак: Творог и кофе.

Регина Муфтахова: Йогурт, фрукты, сэндвич и черный чай с молоком.

Юлия Костерева: Овсянка, кофе, яичница.

Женя Чайка: Тот, который готовлю я.

Александр Морозов: Яичница с помидорами, овсянка, обязательно кофе, лучше двойной — второй кофе через 15 минут после первого. В кофе добавить немного соли. Идеальный завтрак меняется в зависимости от места и времени года. На вкус влияет положение Луны.

Владимир Марин: Не знаю, стараюсь решать по ходу. Якопо Мандич: Хлеб с помидорами и шоколадный торт в автобусе летом. Бернхард Рэн: Тарелка овощей/ фруктов, немного сладкого хлеба, чай, в некоторые дни кофе, иногда сыр. Главное, чтобы хорошая порция чая упала утром в мой желудок!

Rigina Muftakhova: Yogurt, fruits, sandwich and black tea with milk.

Yuriy Kruchak: Cottage cheese and coffee.

Zhenya Chaika: The one prepared by myself.

Yulia Kostereva: Oatmeal, coffee, fried eggs.

Vladimir Marin: Don’t know. Trying to improvise.

Alexander Morozov: Scrambled eggs with tomatoes, oatmeal, coffee is necessary, better — double. Second coffee in 15 minutes after the first one.

Pinch of salt should be added into the coffee. Ideal breakfast should be changed according to the place and season. The moon position definitely defines the taste.

Jacopo Mandich: Bread with tomatoes and chocolate cake on the bus in summertime.

Bernhard Rehn: A good variety of some fruits/vegetables, some sweet bread, tea, somedays coffee… sometimes cheese.

Most important is a good quantity of tea is the very first getting into my stomach!

Jesus Palomino: My favorite breakfast is just white toasted bread with virgin olive oil and salt plus a cafe latte.

Встреча искусства и заводов приводит к возникновению нового эстетического поля, видимого сначала в особом ракурсе восприятия, а полно проявляющегося в пределе эстетического производства. Однако на этом пути от взгляда к делу мы переходим языковые рубежи, мы стираем границы слов и знаков, переиначиваем функции предметов, мы создаем такую эстетическую необходимость, в которой наша убежденность уже не противоречит границам способности производства. Встреча двух систем — художественной и производственной — происходит где-то на высоте человеческого взгляда и на частоте человеческого слова. Произойдя, она вся укладывается в нашу готовность изучать такие языки, к которым в нашем горизонте нет перевода, просто потому, что они описывают другие миры. Так в границы искусства попадают «огнеупор», «спеченные» и не очень «периклазы», «плавки», «плавильные тигли», «вязальщицы», «отпускные печи» и многое другое. Так мы узнаем, что простой уборщик на атомной станции — это «дезактиватор», что любое пространство может быть представлено как совокупность «чистых» и «грязных» коридоров, что стальная арматура, перекатываясь на «холодильнике» с яруса на ярус, шумит, как волны прибоя, и что водопады огромных градирен «мини-милов» легко представить как проекционные экраны. Однако эстетизация производства не является, да и не может являться, целью встречи художников

The coming together of the art and industrial plants leads to the emergence of a new aesthetic field initially seen in a specific focus of perception and fully manifested at the limit of aesthetic production. However, on this way from seeing to doing we overcome language barriers, erase the borders between words and symbols, reinvent the functions of objects, and create an aesthetic necessity in which our belief does not contradict the boundaries of production capacity any more. The meeting of the two systems — the artistic and the industrial — happens somewhere at the height of the human eye and the frequency of the human speech. When occurred, it all fits into our commitment to study such languages which do not bear translation in our horizon simply because they describe different worlds.

Thus, refractories, sintered and not so sintered periclase clinkers, melts, smelting crucibles, knitters, tempering furnaces and many other things enter into the realm of arts. This is how we learn that a cleaner at the nuclear power station is called deactivator, that any space can be seen as an aggregate of clean and dirty corridors, that the steel rebar rolling on the fridge from one level to the next, sounds like breaking waves, and that the water cascading down massive mini mill cooling towers looks very much like a projection screen.

However, the aesthetization of industrial production is not and cannot be the ultimate goal of the meeting of artists and production plants. The attention to the beauty and the form in such encounter is, if you will, a side effect and a constant

и заводов. Внимание к красоте и форме при этой встрече — это, если угодно, побочный эффект или неизменный спутник, точно так же, как и внимание к цвету. В самом деле, сложно представить себе инфографику, более оправданную, чем та, что внедрена в производственные пространства: и какой бы серой ни была производственная пыль, желтые краны всегда будут парить в поднебесье цехов, желтые линии — очерчивать допустимые маршруты, а красные — отрезать пути к отступлению. Почти всегда механообработка деталей встретит вас теплой зеленью станков, стеллажи для хранения деталей будут предусмотрительно выкрашены в разные оттенки (чаще всего синего), а богатая палитра труб водоочистительных сооружений расскажет о том, что за жидкость в них течет. Стоит ли говорить, что фарфоровый завод перестает быть абсолютно белым только в цехе живописцев, а чугунолитейный превращается в черный только там, где красят чугун.

На всех заводах очень много живых зеленых растений, но немногие из предприятий продолжают оставаться яркими и снаружи. Здесь, конечно, вспоминается Первоуральский новотрубный завод, гостевой маршрут которого украшен в духе футуризма. Однако первое место по яркости делят два предприятия, которые — в порядке исключения из общей логики программы — посетили только художники, делавшие связанные с ними проекты. Речь идет о Белоярской атомной станции (туда в августе 2015 года мы с фотохудожником Федором Телковым совершили четыре экспедиции) и офисе компании «Гугл» (где в рамках своей калифорнийской резиденции в июне 2015 года побывала команда Ars Virtua). Помимо яркости снаружи и изнутри, кажется, их роднит многое: парки на территории, улыбки на лицах сотрудников, повышенное внимание к безопасности, вкусная еда и вера в то, что именно здесь делается будущее. Какими бы прекрасными ни представлялись картинки с заводов, их ближайшее рассмотрение заставляет задуматься, нужны ли вообще художникам заводы (в данном случае вынесем за скобки вопрос о том, нужны ли заводам художники). Опираясь на опыт проектов, созданных на Урале в рамках программы арт-резиденций 3-й индустриальной биеннале, можно сказать, что заводы действительно, объяснимо и видимо нужны только в ряде случаев. Прежде всего, когда удается добиться наиболее высокой степени взаимодействия и создать работу или ее часть, пользуясь уникальными производственными ресурсами предприятий. Такого рода сотрудничество получилось с тремя предприятиями. Во-первых, с Артинским заводом сельскохозяйственной техники, где по чертежам,

In fact, it is difficult to imagine the infographics more justified than the one implemented at production sites, and however grey is the industrial dust, yellow cranes will always hover above the workshops, yellow lines will always describe the permissible routes, and red lines will cut off paths of retreat. Nearly always machining areas will welcome you with the warm green of the machines, the shelves for storing parts will be thoughtfully painted in different colors (most often in blue), and a rich palette of colors of pipes at a water-treatment facility will tell you what kind of liquid flows inside them. Needless to say that the porcelain factory ceases to appear utterly white only when it comes to the painting shop and the iron foundry becomes black only where the castings are painted.

Every factory has a lot of green pot plants inside but only few remain bright from the outside. What comes to mind here is the Pervouralsk New Pipe Plant, where the route for guest excursions has been inspired by futurism. However, there are two companies sharing the top of the podium. As an exception from the general logic of the program these sites were visited only by the artists involved in the projects directly related to them.

I am talking about the Beloyarskaya Nuclear Power Station (in August 2015 the photography artist Fyodor Telkov and I made four expeditions there) and the Google office (visited by the Ars Virtua team as a part of their Californian residence in June 2015).

As well as the brightness inside and out it seems that they have much more in common — parks within their perimeters, smiling employees, emphasized attention to safety, delicious food, and the belief that it is right here that the future is made.

No matter how beautiful the pictures from factories are, a closer look makes one think whether the artists need these factories (in this case let us factor out the question whether the factories need the artists). Drawing on the experience of the projects created in the Urals within the Artist-in-Residence program of the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial, it can be said that only in some cases there is a reasonable and apparent real need in industrial plants. The first case scenario is when we manage to achieve the highest degree of interaction and create an artwork or some part of it by employing the unique production resources of the enterprises. We had this kind of cooperation with three enterprises. First, there was the Arti Plant of Agricultural Equipment where, following the drawings developed by Stéphane Thidet, an enlarged scythe was manufactured. The second was the Sysert Porcelain Factory, where the production facilities were engaged in the entire process of creation of the porcelain soldier sculpture (from making the mold to the final product) for Baltensperger + Siepert’s project Dancing Queen and in the heat treatment of pieces found for Stéphane Thidet’s project The Rests. The third was the Magnezit Plant at the city of Satka, the Chelyabinsk

В-третьих, на базе комбината «Магнезит» в городе Сатке (Челябинская область) для итальянского скульптора Якопо Мандича была создана настоящая мастерская, что дало художнику возможность не только работать с редкими материалами (магнезит, доломит) самостоятельно, но и — в случае необходимости — воспользоваться специальным оборудованием, привлекать на помощь сотрудников предприятия. Личная вовлеченность магнезитовцев в создание произведения искусства, то непосредственное, открытое общение, возникающее в этом процессе между людьми, которые профессионально принадлежат, казалось бы, совершенно разным мирам, — очень важные результаты программы на пути взаимного расширения эстетических горизонтов.

Другая модель взаимодействия с заводами развернулась, например, в проектах «Re-generation» Бернхарда Рэна и «Звуки Калача для горожан» Хесуса Паломино. Эти художники работают с заводом как со своего рода носителем определенного алфавита, например, алфавита звуковых символов. В этом случае справедливо сказать, что Бернхард Рэн фиксирует звуки действующего предприятия (ПНТЗ), чтобы затем вплести их в ткань собственного визуально-теоретического, критического повествования, а Хесус Паломино, напротив, вторгается в существующую на предприятии символическую систему звуков, чтобы дополнить ее своим, природным алфавитом или совершенно сломать (имеется в виду перформанс, проведенный на Ирбитском мотоциклетном заводе 4 августа). В похожей манере работает и Владимир Марин в своем проекте «Сервиз», когда он нарушает привычную логику производства: вместо того чтобы передать «белье» (готовый, но недекорированный фарфор) на роспись, он изымает его из стройного ряда языка технологии и — предмет за предметом — наносит на весь сервиз одинаковый скол. Более классические схемы взаимодействия, где территории предприятий выступают своеобразным индустриальным пленэром, мы видим в проектах Жени Мачневой «Тираж 1/1» и Федора Телкова «Одомашнивание». Непосредственно на Каслинском заводе Женя (так и сказала бы «всего лишь», если бы не знала, как сложно было добиться этой возможности) делает рисунки — эскизы будущих полотен, а Федор — просто снимает портреты работников атомной станции; и кажется, что делать такие простые вещи в таких труднодоступных местах — это и есть основной вызов. Проекты же Александра Морозова, дуэта Baltensperger + Siepert, команды Ars Virtua и второй проект Владимира Марина «Письмена» выходят за рамки непосредственного взаимодействия с конкретными предприятиями, художники работают с ними в более широком поле — будь то поле индустриального наследия, социально-критического осмысления действительности или анализ роли информации в современном, казалось бы, постиндустриальном обществе.

region where the Italian sculptor Jacopo Mandich was given his own studio where the artist had the opportunity to work with rare materials (magnesite and dolomite) and use the specialized equipment involving the company’s employees, whenever there was a need. Personal dedication of the company’s employees in the production of an artwork, direct and open communication occurring in the course of this process between people belonging to absolutely different worlds professionally are very important results of the program on the way to the mutual expansion of aesthetic horizons. Another model of interaction with industrial plants has unfolded, for instance, in the projects Re-generation by Bernhard Rehn and Kalach’s Cityscape for citizens

by Jesus Palomino. These artists work with a plant as a sort of carrier of an alphabet, for example, an alphabet of sonic symbols. In this case it would be correct to say that Bernhard Rehn records the sounds of an operating enterprise (Pervouralsk New Pipe) in order to then weave them into the fabric of his own critical narrative — visual and theoretical, in contrast to Jesus Palomino, who intrudes into the symbolic system of sounds existing at the plant in order to complement it with a natural alphabet or to break it down completely (here I recall the performance held at the Irbit Motorcycle Plant on August 4). In a similar manner Vladimir Marin works in his project The Service Set when he violates the usual logic of production. Instead of passing “the whites”(china that is ready but not yet decorated) further, he pulls it from the neat rank of the language of technology and — item by item — inflicts the identical chipping on every piece of the entire set.

We see more conventional arrangements of interaction where the plants’ territories act as a kind of industrial plein air in the projects Edition 1/1 by Zhenya Machneva and Domestication by Fyodor Telkov.

Zhenya, right there at the Kasli Plant, makes (I would have said “just makes” if I did not know how difficult it was to get this opportunity) drawings, sketches for her paintings, while Fyodor just takes photo-portraits of the nuclear power station’s staff — and it seems that the main challenge is doing this “basic” things at such inaccessible locations.

The projects by Aleksander Morozov, the Baltensperger + Siepert duo, Ars Virtua team, “Open Space” group, and Vladimir Marin’s second project The Characters go beyond the direct interaction with particular industrial facilities working in a broader field, be it the industrial heritage, social critique of reality, or the analysis of the role of information in the contemporary (seemingly) post-industrial society.

Современные технологии ускоряют мир, и в одну долю секунды уже вписывается огромное количество действий. Растягивать время и сжимать пространство — разве возможна без этого мобилизация? Технологичный мир выстроен на стратегии мобилизации, на ее предпосылках и следствиях, на том, что выжатое пространство не участвует больше в построении временных шкал, а вытянутое время не способно дать ответ на простой вопрос: «Когда здесь садится солнце и встает луна?».

Программа Арт-резиденций — это, безусловно, встреча индустриального пространства Уральского региона, где реки перевязаны плотинами, небо прорезано трубами, а леса благодарны каменному углю, с новым временем глобализованного общества, которое настолько далеко ушло от идеи материального производства, что даже разговор о технологических сроках кажется в его контексте нелепым.

Своей художественной интервенцией в регион мы вовсе не пытались обмануть пространство: хотя дрон с автопилотом несравненно больше соответствовал бы мобилизационным задачам, мы объехали наши города на обычном автобусе, прочувствовав неподатливость расстояний на собственном опыте. Что же касается времени… Время арт-резиденций имеет несколько измерений, среди них столько параллельных, что найденные пересечения кажутся невероятной удачей. Хотя, возможно, пересечений и нет вовсе: просто параллельные линии проходят так близко друг к другу, что одной ногой можно встать на одну, другой — на другую. Время, диктуемое любым художественным проектом, условно; время, выстраивающее производственные циклы на заводах, — это константа: вся индустриальная машинерия работает на шестеренки огромного часового механизма. Он не терпит вмешательств в свою личную жизнь, он крепко держит оборону — в сражении с ним погибли Дон Кихот и Ахиллес. Погиб бы и Кафка, забудь он о бессмысленности этой битвы. Задача программы — это поиск продуктивного взаимодействия действующих производств и художественных инициатив: стремительность художественных решений заведомо противоречит всей логике индустриального труда. В тех случаях, когда нам удалось удержать в уме это простое правило, у нас получились проекты. Даже мобилизационная интеграция должна быть мягкой.

Stretching time and compressing space — these are probably the most obvious challenges science, technology and, ultimately, industry traditionally face.

We constantly invent new modes of transportation, and the distances, which used to seem impossible, become accessible. Modern technologies accelerate the world, and one fraction of a second already contains a multitude of actions.

Stretching time and compressing space — is mobilization really possible without this? A technological world is built on the strategy of mobilization; on its preconditions and consequences; on the fact that a squeezed space no longer takes part in building temporal scales, and the stretched time cannot answer a simple question — when the sun sets and when the moon rises here.

The Artist-In-Residence Program is undoubtedly a meeting between the industrial space of the Ural region, where the rivers are bound with dams, the sky is pierced with chimneys and the forests are grateful to the coal — and the new time of the globalized society, which left the idea of the material production so far behind that even the talk about technological schedules seems absurd within its context.

Through our artistic intervention into the region, we did not try to deceive the space at all; although an autopilot drone would have conformed much, much better with the tasks of mobilization, we travelled around our towns using an ordinary bus, feeling first hand the intractability of distances. As far as time is concerned…

The time of the art residences has several dimensions, and so many of them are parallel that the discovered junctions seem to be an unbelievable luck. Maybe the junctions do not exist at all, though: maybe, parallel lines run so close to each other, that you can stand with one foot on one of them and with another — on the second.

Time imposed by any art project is contingent; time, which builds industrial cycles at the plants, is a constant: the whole industrial machinery is working for the gears of one giant clockwork mechanism. This mechanism does not tolerate interferences into its private life; it holds tight — Don Quixote and Achilles perished trying to fight it. And Kafka would have perished too, if he had forgotten the meaninglessness of this battle.

The task of this program is to search for a productive interaction between the operating manufacturing facilities and the artistic initiatives: the impetuousness of artistic decisions obviously contradicts the whole logic of industrial labor. When we could remember this simple rule, we succeeded in our projects. Even mobilizational integration should be gentle.

Во время посещения Фарфорового завода художника заинтересовали предметы, отброшенные на стадии до обжига изделия. Эти предметы, судьба которых быть снова превращенными в однородную массу и отлитыми в формы, — произвдоственный брак, выброшенный из производственного цикла. Художник предложил вернуть их в этот процесс: обжечь и покрыть глазулью. Эти скомканные объекты свидетельствуют о процессе производства и несут в себе следы обработки, сохраняя черты тех объектов, которые должны были из них получиться. Эти объекты представлены на подлинном стеллаже для отливки форм, привезенном с Фарфорового завода. Оттуда же привезены и прочие элементы инсталляции, а лампы по характеру света точно такие же, как те, что используются на заводе.

During his visit to the Porcelain factory, the artist took interest in the objects discarded at the pre-firing stage. These are the objects destined to again become a homogenous mass and be molded — they are the factory rejects thrown out of the manufacturing cycle. The artist offered to return them into this process: to fire them and to glaze them.

These crumpled objects bear evidence of the production process and carry the traces of manufacturing, preserving the features of the objects they were supposed to become. These objects are presented on a genuine stand for molding, brought from the Porcelain factory. Other objects of the installation were also taken from the factory and lamps produce the same day light as the lamps, installed at the factory.

In his project made for Ural Industrial Biennial, Stéphane Thidet created a total installation for one of the basement rooms of Iset Hotel. In it, the scythe rotates against its usual direction as if breaking the passage of time, leaving circles on the water. This work is the result of the artist’s residence at the Arti Factory: there, specially for him, an unusual enlarged scythe was produced. The circular movement of the scythe fits ideally into the square geometry of the room; the splashes of water create a muffled echo.

Скульптура из камня (магнезит и доломит) представляет кусок земной коры в виде блока неправильной формы, от его поверхности террасами вглубь уходит воронка, которая напоминает о карьере, где этот камень был добыт. Вынутый блок породы, глубиной 40 см, расколот на отдельные кусочки, которые снова уложены в чашу «карьера». Во время Биеннале публике предлагается взять кусочек магнезита. Инсталляция представляет собой игру, своеобразный пазл наоборот, первый шаг в размышлении об исчерпании ресурсов и приглашение зрителей разделить ответственность за финальный результат: «кратер». This stone sculpture made from magnesite and dolomite presents a part of the earth’s crust as a block of irregular shape. From the surface of this shape terrace by terrace the crater goes to the depth, reminding us an open-cast mine from which this stone is extracted. The artist took out the central part (about 40 cm) of the stone and divided it into pieces and then placed it back to the bowl of the crater.

During the exhibition the public is invited to take a small stone of magnezite. So, the installation is a game, kind of a puzzle constructed inside out, first step in the reflection about exhaustion of resources and invitation for the spectators to share the responsibility for the final result: the crater. The sculpture itself is presented “at the foot” of the Iset Hotel and in the room 704 visitors — with the help of direct video surveillance — could observe the life of the “stone-pit” during the exhibition.

«Звуки Калача для горожан» — это проект искусства участия, цель которого — привнести опыт природных звуков в повседневную жизнь горожан, работающих на заводах Уральского региона. Главной задачей проекта было записать 8 часов природного звука в Калаче. Чтобы добраться до этой отдаленной маленькой деревушки, команда проекта воспользовалась Алапаевской узкоколейной железной дорогой. В действительности Калач — конечная станция этой дороги. Весь опыт создания проекта: путешествие в Калач, запись звуков природы в лесу, представление этих звуков на работающем предприятии — был задокументирован на видео, которое представляет собой своеобразный журнал экспедиции. Алапаевская узкоколейка — самая протяженная узкоколейная железная дорога на территории Российской Федерации, которая в свои лучшие времена достигала 620 километров и в течение долгих лет оставалась основным транспортным средством как для пассажирских, так и для грузовых перевозок. Справедливо отметить, что Алапаевская узкоколейная железная дорога играла исключительную роль для отдаленных деревень и уральских лесных просторов, помогая поддерживать устойчивое социальное, культурное и экономическое развитие региона. То, что художник привез на поезде из природных мест, ценно не только как уникальный природный ресурс, но как эстетический опыт, который мы получаем через звуковой перформанс, полный символического богатства. По представлению автора, перенос звуков Калача на Ирбитский мотоциклетный завод должен работать как своего рода спусковой крючок для нового эстетического опыта, вызов к диалогу между индустриальной деятельностью человека и нашим современным чувством природы. Как для художника для Хесуса Паломино важно, что сегодня любой общественный диалог, который в то же самое время обращается к экономической активности человека, к природе и промышленности, должен рассматриваться в связи с идеями экологии человека и устойчивого развития.

Kalach’s Soundscape for Citizens is a participatory art project that proposed to bring the soundscape experience into the everyday life of citizens in the factories in the Ural Region.

The recording of natural sounds taken from the environment in Kalach was played on August 4, 2015 at the Ural Motorcycle Plant in Irbit.

The project proposed to do an eight-hours sound recording of the natural site in Kalach. To reach this remote small village, the project team used Alapayevsk narrow gauge railway. In fact, Kalach is located at the end of the Apalayevsk railway line. The whole experience of travelling to Kalach, the experience of recording nature in the forest, and the performance of the soundscape at the working site at the plant was documented in a video that explain and register the whole journey.

Alapayevsk narrow gauge is the most extended narrow gauge railway of the Russian Federation, which in its best times reached an extension of approximately 620 kilometres. Alapayevsk railway has been for years the main mean of transportation in this area operating both passenger and freight trains. It should be fair to say that this company played an exceptional role among the remote villages in the Ural forestry areas, helping to sustain social, cultural and economic development in the region.

What the artist brought on this train from the natural environment is valuable not only as a unique natural resource, but as an aesthetic experience, which we receive through the sound performance, full of symbolic wealth. In the artist’s view, bringing Kalach’s soundscape into the Ural Motorcycle Plant triggered a challenging aesthetic experience of a dialogue between the industrial human activity and our contemporary sense of nature.

For Jesus Palomino as an artist it is essential to stress that nowadays any social dialogue addressing human economical activity, nature and industry, should be concerned with ideas of Human Ecology and sustainable development.

Екатеринбург стал одним из первых заводских городов, который был основан по указу императора в XVIII веке в первую очередь для строительства железоделательных заводов. Впоследствии город, расположившийся в крае, богатом природными ресурсами, зарекомендовал себя как торговый, со свойственными таковому экономическим бумом, градостроительным и культурным развитием. Екатеринбург выделяется на Урале и богатством студенческой жизни, однако индустриальная составляющая является важнейшей финансовой основой для населения. Ввиду кризиса с середины XIX века город стал важным торговым и финансовым центром России. Однако последующие экономические трудности в советский период подвергли многие некогда преуспевающие заводы сильному упадку. Предприятия закрывались, следствием чего были безработица и прочие социальные проблемы, особенно в прилегающих провинциальных районах. В настоящее время со стороны правительства предпринимается много усилий, чтобы вернуть городам былой индустриальный расцвет.

Re-generation пытается воссоздать, возродить прошлое, по крайней мере на ограниченный срок — срок, ограниченный пространством. Объектом становится номер гостиницы «Исеть», пустующей уже два года. Воссоздается вид номера, каким он был в свои лучшие времена, возможно, каким он был до того, как гостиница закрылась пару лет назад. Гостиница превращается в витрину ушедшего времени: комнате, в ее прежнем оформлении, возвращаются характерные декоративные элементы. Отсылкой к временам расцвета становятся обработанные записи звуков с заводов и звуков окружающей среды, которые помогут установить общую взаимосвязь и лучше понять актуальность промышленности. Оригинальные звукозаписи с местных предприятий накладываются на синтетически созданные шумы, которые как бы имитируют, регенерируют подлинные звуки. В это же время на экране телевизора воспроизводится современный текст (наложенный на записи с местных заводов) Пола Мейсона, который занимается вопросами капитализма в целом и гиперкапитализма в частности. Ekaterinburg was one of the first industrial cities, founded by the decree of the emperor in the 18th century, primarily for the construction of ironwork plants. Later, the city, located in the province rich in natural resources, established itself as a trade city with economic boom, urban and cultural development characteristic to that.

Ekaterinburg stands out in the Urals by the richness of student life, but the industrial component is a major financial basis for the population. Because of the crisis, starting from the middle of the 19th century, the city became an important trading and financial center in Russia. However, the subsequent economic difficulties in the Soviet period, subjected many once prosperous factories to a strong decline. Enterprises were closed, resulting in unemployment, and had other social problems, especially in the surrounding provincial areas.

Currently, the government is taking a lot of effort to bring the city its former industrial heyday back.

Re-generation is trying to recreate, revive the past, at least for a limited period — the period limited by space. The room in the Iset Hotel vacant for two years becomes an object. The view of the room as it was in its heyday, perhaps, as it was before the hotel was closed a couple of years ago, is recreated. The hotel is transformed into a showcase of the past age: the room is recreated in its former design, its characteristic decorative elements are brought back.

References to the heyday times are the sounds of the plants and environment recorded and processed; they help to establish a common relationship and better understand the relevance of the industry. The original recordings from the local enterprises are imposed on synthetically created sounds that seem to mimic and regenerate the authentic sounds.

At the same time a contemporary text (superimposed on a record from the local plants) by Paul Mason, which deals with capitalism in general and hyper-capitalism in particular, is played on a TV screen. His ideological theoretical basis lies in the study of actual development of population devoid of power and deceived by the world of finance, alternative projects for departing from the financial and credit markets, the new democratic paths emanating from the public, crowdfunding, crowdsourcing and many others (title of the article The end of capitalism has begun, published in The Guardian, 17.07.2015).

«Сервиз» — это проект-провокация, это объект-обманка. Художник здесь ведет работу с предметами быта и со стереотипом, согласно которому дефекты на них являются результатом использования. Действительно, обычно они появляются в процессе эксплуатации и делают вещь негодной. Но в данном случае это не так. Художественные дефекты в «Сервизе» Владимира Марина не имеют бытового происхождения, но намеренно, более того, кропотливо переносятся на сервиз, копируются от объекта к объекту по специально созданному трафарету.

Создается почти незаметная, но неудобная для зрителя вещь. Он понимает, что что-то не так, но не сразу видит что. А увидев, не понимает — зачем, почему и как. И в этот момент становится соавтором, придумывая свою версию происходящего.

Этот проект основан на материале, найденном в ходе июльской экскурсионной резиденции. Художник Владимир Марин заметил, что на напольные плиты на заводах часто наносились сварочные швы, чтобы сделать листы менее скользкими. Однако рабочие, решая формальную задачу, делали это каждый по-своему: точки, линии, узоры, надписи, рисунки. Некоторые подписывали свой монотонный труд. Узоры, наваренные на напольные плиты исторического завода, не просто дань технике безопасности, производственная необходимость. В проекте «Письмена» они видятся как самостоятельные художественные высказывания. Чтобы воспринять их, мы увеличиваем дистанцию, создавая профессиональную копию изображения: рисунки, наносившиеся годами работниками классического Демидовского завода, фотографируются, оцифровываются, и с помощью современного лазерного станка их контуры переносятся на свежие листы металла, затем по контуру работает сварщик, придавая рисункам фактуру с помощью классической электродной сварки. Эти листы превратили одну из комнат гостиницы «Исеть» в пещеру, в которой послания прежних поколений работников заводов говорят с нами настенными письменами.

This project is based on the material, found during the guided residence in July. The artist Vladimir Marin noticed that floor plates at the factories are often covered with welding seams with the purpose to make floor less slippery. But workers, solving this technical problem, did it each in their own way: points, lines, inscriptions, patterns, images. Some of them used to sign their monotonous work.

Patterns, welded into the floor plates of a historic factory, are more than just a necessity of production or a tribute to safety measures. In the project The Characters by Vladimir Marin they are observed as an independent artistic proposition. To perceive them we increase the distance, creating the professional copy of the image: drawings, which have been welded by the workers of a classic Demidov factory along years, were photographed, digitalized, their contours were transferred into the new metal plates with a help of modern laser machine and then these contours were worked on by a welder, who shaped them with the classic electric arc welding.

These plates transformed one of the rooms of the Iset Hotel into the cave, where messages of the former generations of the factory workers speak with us by wall characters. The Service Set is a provocative project, a tricky object. Here the artist works with the objects of everyday life and with the stereotype, according to which the defects on these objects are the result of being used. In fact, usually they appear in the process of exploitation and make the thing worthless. But this is not the case. Artistic defects of The Service Set of Vladimir Marin do not have these domestic origins, instead they are applied onto the set intentionally, more than that, laboriously. They are copied from the object to object, with a help of specially designed pattern.

Something almost unseen, but not practical is created. The spectator understands that something goes wrong, but does not see it at once. And when s/he sees it, s/he cannot get why, what for and how. At this particular moment the spectator becomes a co-author, inventing his/her own version of what is going on.

Общение всегда играло важную роль в развитии культуры. Но с приходом электронных технологий, интернета, социальных сетей этот процесс все больше и больше становится затруднительным. Парадоксально, но то, что поначалу нами воспринималось как возможность преодолеть пространственные, временные и культурные барьеры, решительный прорыв к построению целостного, прозрачного и разумного мира, сегодня проявляется виртуализацией реальности, манипуляциями сознания, наполняется мифами и пропагандой. Человек в этой модели стал простым ретранслятором чужих сообщений. Проект «Мастерская плаката» бросает вызов такой ситуации. В июле 2015 года в Нижнем Тагиле в одном из вагонов маршрута № 15 было организовано производственное пространство — передвижная коммуникативная площадка, содержащая в себе элементы социального центра и творческой мастерской. В салоне трамвая были установлены столы, за которыми тагильчане могли общаться на различные темы, а самые активные имели возможность совместно с художниками заняться созданием плакатов. В широком значении «Мастерская плаката» стала местом ревизии социальнокультурной коммуникации, культурным пространством взаимоотношений между художниками, которые по своей сути являются открытой структурой к миру, и жителями индустриального города, различными социальными группами с четко обозначенными требованиями, определенными системами ценностей и восприятием мира. Главная цель этой ревизии заключается в том, чтобы найти модели совместной деятельности, согласования интересов и сотрудничества. Сотрудничество, в котором не было бы утрачено различий при обретении общности.

Communication has always played an important role in the development of culture. But with electronic technologies, internet and social networks coming into life this process becomes more and more difficult. It may seem a paradox, but what initially was perceived as the possibility to overcome spatial, temporal and cultural barriers, as a critical breakthrough to the construction of the complete, transparent and rational world, today turns out to be a virtualization of the reality, manipulation of mind, filled with myths and propaganda. In this model a person becomes just a forwarder of borrowed messages.

The project Posters workshop challenges such a situation.

In July 2015, in Nizhny Tagil, at one of the trams No. 15, a production space was organized — it was a mobile communication platform, which included elements of a social center and a creative workshop. Inside the tram special tables were installed, and, sitting at these tables, citizens of Tagil could discuss different issues, and the most interested had a possibility to create posters together with the artists.

In a broad sense, the Posters workshop became a place of revision of socio-cultural communication, cultural space of interaction between artists, who, essentially, are the structure open to the world and the residents of an industrial city, and to the different social groups with clearly defined demands, certain values and systems of perception of the world. The main goal of this revision is to find models of common activity, coordination of interests and cooperation. A cooperation, where the differences are not lost in the process of reaching the commonality.

«Dancing Queen» — это продолжение одноименной работы художественного дуэта из Швейцарии Baltensperger + Siepert. Отправная точка — фигурка игрушечного солдатика, которая работает на батарейках. Принцип этой игрушки простой: солдатик ползет по полу и время от времени прерывает движение, замирает и «стреляет», прежде чем продолжить свой путь. Для своей видеоработы Baltensperger + Siepert просто изменили положение солдатика с горизонтального на вертикальное и синхронизировали скорость его движения с ритмом музыкальной композиции. В этом новом положении движение, которое было задумано как воинственный жест, превращается в танец, становится радостным и беззаботным. Название «Dancing Queen» взято из хита группы ABBA, пользовавшегося особой популярностью в 70-е годы, эта же композиция и лфегла в основу музыкального сопровождения видео. Во время своей резиденции в Екатеринбурге Baltensperger + Siepert случайно увидели в витрине одного из уличных киосков точно такого же игрушечного солдатика. Художникам показалось любопытным, что одинаковые игрушечные солдатики продаются в разных точках мира. Все, чем они отличаются, — это цвет формы и лицо, на котором можно прочесть черты любой национальности (в зависимости от страны, где продается солдатик). Для Уральской индустриальной биеннале художники решили создать группу белоснежных фарфоровых солдатиков. Как и в видео, солдатики снова встанут на ноги, но, сделанные из фарфора, они замрут в одном положении. Изменения, которые происходят со сменой материала, отдаляют солдатика от контекста детских игрушек и приглашают зрителя посмотреть на фигуру как на чистую форму, лишенную значения и не нагруженную символами.

Dancing Queen is a continuation of Baltensperger + Siepert’s same-named video piece.

The starting point is a battery powered toy soldier originally designed to crawl on the floor. From time to time the toy soldier interrupts its movements, lays still and pretends to shoot before continuing to gain ground.

For the original video piece Baltensperger + Siepert simply changed the soldier’s position from its horizontal orientation into vertical and adjusted the speed to the rhythm of the sound. In that new position the motion, which was designed as a militant gesture, transforms into a dancing move, a gesture of joy and absence of worry. The title of the artwork is taken from the ABBA’s catchy 1970s disco song Dancing Queen, which also builds the acoustic background of the video.

During their residence in Ekaterinburg, Baltensperger + Siepert again stumbled upon the same kind of plastic soldier in the window of one of the many kiosks at the side of the road. The artists were curious to find out that the same kind of toy soldiers seem to be available all over the world. All they differ in is the color and pattern of the uniform and the head of the soldier, that can be replaced with a head of all kinds of ethnicities (according to the country where the soldier is sold).

For the Ural Biennial the artists decided to create a cluster of plain white porcelain soldiers. Like in the video, the soldiers are put on their feet. But, made of porcelain, are frozen in their posture. The transformation that happens through the change of material takes the soldier out of the childrens’ toy context and enables the viewer to see the figure as a pure shape devoid of symbolic meaning.

В своем последнем проекте художественный дуэт Baltensperger + Siepert ставит под вопрос привычные практики художественного производства. Вместо того чтобы увеличить собственные производственные мощности в фордистской манере, они решили воспроизвести себя, найдя в Екатеринбурге двух человек, которые стали Baltensperger + Siepert.

With their latest project, artist duo Baltensperger + Siepert questions common practices of the art production. Instead of increasing their production in a fordist manner, they reproduced themselves by finding two people in Ekaterinburg, who became Baltensperger + Siepert.

The new Russian Baltensperger + Siepert worked independently within a given framework and employed the thinking process and methodology specific for Baltensperger + Siepert. Finally “Baltensperger + Siepert” produced an independent artwork for the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial.

Baltensperger + Siepert understand their practice as a reflection on relevant issues that have an impact on both social and a political level. With their work “Baltensperger + Siepert”, the duo examines new ways of how art can be produced.

Their work takes a new spin on their own artistic identity.

Baltensperger and Siepert treat “Baltensperger + Siepert” as a constructed, reproducible persona and create circumstances under which “Baltensperger + Siepert” can function even when detached from them.

In the process of the expansion of the Baltensperger + Siepert, Anastasia and Anastasia accepted the challenge to get deep into the artistic process of Baltensperger + Siepert. Using the specific methodology of Stefan and David they created an artwork in the course of six weeks. Through their research Anastasia + Anastasia immersed themselves deeply into the problem of identity search in contemporary world, its creation and manifestations on individual, national and global level.

With their final work Deprussion, Made in Russia they offer the multinational audience of the Ural Biennial to get a small but significant permanent tattoo “Made in Russia”.

Hereby they question the common concept of cultural self-localization by labeling an individual using the terminology of labeling commodities. But contrary to the commodities, the individual is labeled with the “Made in Russia” regardless of his/her real country of origin.

By raising a question of a social stigma with all its controversies in the public discourse, Anastasia and Anastasia offer an unusual perspective. This voluntary act of self stigmatization in English language connects the tattoo with the identity beyond the national borders of its bearer but in the context of both economic and political structures, and dissociates it from purely nationalist contexts.

Я персонаж фильма о путешествии, и я в дороге. Путешествие прежде всего форма. Форма нужна для того, чтобы было куда приезжать. Структура любого роуд-муви распадается на ряд эпизодов. 12 эпизодов — 12 предприятий на Среднем Урале, событий полетов птиц над индустриальным ландшафтом. Орлы, стрижи, ласточки и сапсаны — пойманы в ловушку времени и записаны в дневнике моего путешествия. Нервозность и тревогу вызывает истерзанный ландшафт Урала. Эксплуатация недр и насильственная, ускоренная индустриализация оставили свой след в виде терриконов и остовов выработанных шахт. При этом следы прошлого присутствуют в настоящем: здесь физически ощущаешь одновременное существование потоков времени. Прошлое и будущее присутствуют симультанно в зыбком настоящем. Моя работа фиксирует время: траектория летящих птиц прежде всего создает хронотоп, рисунки фиксируют темпоральный пейзаж.

Мой труд соотносим с трудом пролетария: 10 минут времени на рисунок равны 1/48 рабочего дня. Эти пропорции обмена обусловливают стоимость моих усилий и подтверждают тезис о неравенстве труда. Логичным следствием трудовой теории стоимости является признание труда единственным источником богатства. Если так, мое богатство — свободное время. На рисунок уходит 10 минут, 10 минут на фиксирование того, что исчезает мгновенно. Траектория птиц не имеет материального веса и четкого плана, в отличие от производства — последнее всегда технологично, линейно и схематично. Происходит столкновение двух поэтик: индустриальной и романтической — производство утилитарно, а движение птиц на первый взгляд не имеет четкой цели… Расселяя рисунки в гостинице «Исеть», я совершаю диверсию. Я материализую в воображении мост от индустриального к гостинице «Исеть», части Городка чекистов, созданного пролетариями труда для пролетариев-чекистов, смотрящих и следящих. Чекисты — глаза рабочего, формально камера — как фокус линзы «Исети» — скользит по пейзажу, высматривая стрижей и голубей. Заброшенные заводы-музеи и действующие заводы, памятники культуры и экономические зоны — все эти пространства оказываются зафиксированными и записанными в дневник моего времени. Напряжение столь велико, что лопается кафель…

I am a character of a road movie, and I am on the road. Travel is primarily a form. We need a form, so that we have a place of arrival. The structure of every road movie breaks into a sequence of episodes. The 12 episodes are the 12 plants of the Middle Urals: bird flying events over an industrial landscape. Eagles, swifts, swallows, peregrines are caught into a trap of time and logged in my travel diary.

The Urals’ tormented landscape produces nervousness and anxiety. Exploitation of mineral resources and violent, accelerated industrialization left their traces in the form of waste piles and carcasses of depleted mines. Moreover, the traces of the past are in the present: here you physically feel the synchronous existence of time flows. The past and the future exist simultaneously within the tenuous present.

My work captures the time: the trajectory of flying birds ultimately creates a chronotope; the drawings record a temporal landscape.

My work correlates to the work of a proletarian: 10 minutes for a drawing equals 1/48th of a working day. These exchange ratios determine the value of my efforts and confirm the thesis about labor inequality. The logical consequence of the labor theory of value is the idea that labor is the only source of wealth. If so, then my wealth is my free time.

10 minutes are needed to make a drawing — 10 minutes to preserve something which disappears in a moment. Bird trajectories do not have material weight or a clear plan — unlike production, which is always technological, linear and schematic. It is a collision of two poetics: an industrial and a romantic one: production is utilitarian: the movement of birds seems, at the first glance, to have no clear purpose…

By exhibiting my drawings at the Iset Hotel, I take a subversive action. In my imagination, I materialize a bridge from the industrial to the Iset Hotel, to the part of the Chekist Neighborhood built by the working proletariat for the KGB proletariat — the watching and the surveilling ones. KGB officers are the eyes of the worker, formally, a camera as a focus of the lens of the Iset glides across the landscape, searching for swifts and pigeons. Abandoned industrial museums and operating plants, cultural monuments and economic zones: all these spaces are captured and recorded in a diary of my time. The tension is so great that the tiles begin to burst…

История Каслинского завода уходит корнями в XVIII век. С царских времен предприятие славилось своими мастерами, производило предметы архитектурного и художественного литья. И по сей день завод функционирует. Литье интересует меня прежде всего как средство массового тиражирования вещей. При выборе Каслинского завода в качестве места для резиденции я сразу же почувствовала, что хочу создать серию натюрмортов, так как из всего разнообразия изделий, изготавливаемых на этом предприятии, меня привлекает в большей степени пластика малых форм, широко представленная в ассортименте продукции завода. Распространение этих предметов имеет с давних пор богатую географию. Мы можем встретить небольшие кабинетные скульптуры в музеях, частных коллекциях, антикварных салонах, на блошиных рынках, а небольшие сувенирные фигурки найти в простых квартирах своих знакомых, где они могут безвестно пылиться на полке. Но как эти предметы выглядят в производственных цехах, мы не знаем.

Проект «Тираж 1/1» представляет серию «индустриальных» натюрмортов, выполненных в технике шпалерного ткачества, эскизы для которых были созданы в рабочей обстановке Каслинского завода. Здесь для меня важен эксперимент, в котором тиражируемой вещи присваивается статус единственного произведения, который она приобретает в тканом воплощении. Также я вижу интересную взаимосвязь между средневековой исключительно ручной техникой исполнения и тем, что практически все операции на заводе также делаются вручную. То есть несмотря на серийность производства штампованность как таковая отсутствует, потому что каждая фигурка прошла многоступенчатую обработку через человеческие руки. Для меня ручной труд в современном технологичном мире, с одной стороны, остается под вопросом, с другой — я вижу в нем возможность свободы и самостоятельности.

The history of the Kasli plant goes back to the 18th century. Since the time of the tsars, this plant has been famous for its skilled craftsmen; it produced cast architectural and art objects. The plant is still operating today.

Casting interests me mostly as a way of the mass replication of objects. When choosing the Kasli Plant as a place of residence, I immediately felt that I wanted to create a series of still lifes — because out of the whole assortment of objects produced by this plant, I am particularly attracted to the minor forms which are widely represented among the plant’s products. These objects have long been in wide distribution geographically. We can see small cabinet sculptures in museums, private collections, antique shops and flea markets. We find small souvenir figurines in the ordinary apartments of our friends, where they can remain in obscurity, gathering dust on shelves. However we do not know how these objects look inside their production shops.

Edition 1/1 project presents a series of “industrial” still lifes made in a tapestry weaving technique, which were designed in the working environment of the Kasli plant. What is important for me here is an experiment, which ascribes a unique status to a replicable thing — a status, which it acquires in its weaved incarnation. I also see an interesting interconnection between the medieval, purely manual technique — and the fact that almost all operations at the plant are also done manually. That is, despite the serial nature of production, there is no “conveyor type” quality, because each figurine passes through multiple stages of processing in human hands.

For me, manual labor in a modern technological world, on the one hand, remains problematic; on the other — I see it as an opportunity for freedom and independence.

Атом как страшное оружие постепенно усмиряется и превращается в «мирный», то есть служащий на благо человека. Около 15 процентов мировой энергии сегодня производится атомными электростанциями. В Свердловской области 10 процентов электроэнергии производится Белоярской атомной электростанцией. БАЭС находится в 45 километрах от Екатеринбурга и в трех километрах от города Заречного. Белоярская станция появилась в стране второй после Сибирской и работает с 1964 года. Станция сооружена в две очереди: первая очередь — энергоблоки № 1 и 2 с реактором АМБ, вторая очередь — энергоблок № 3 с реактором БН-600. После 17 и 22 лет работы энергоблоки № 1 и № 2 были остановлены соответственно в 1981 и 1989 годах, сейчас они находятся в режиме длительной консервации и стоят с выгруженным из реактора топливом. В настоящее время на Белоярской АЭС эксплуатируется один энергоблок БН-600 — единственный в мире успешно работающий энергоблок с реактором на быстрых нейтронах. Однако со дня на день должен быть пущен в эксплуатацию энергоблок № 4 с усовершенствованным реактором на быстрых нейтронах БН-800.

Большинство людей в мире испытывают страх перед ядерной энергией, ведь всем известны аварии на станциях и их чудовищные последствия. Однако времена меняются, укрощение атома продолжается, наука движется вперед. Тот страх, который наполняет людей вокруг, кажется, незнаком работникам станции и жителям Заречного. Для них БАЭС — это источник жизни, дом, к которому они искренне привязаны, который они благоустраивают и украшают. Город и предприятие образовывают один организм, погруженный в густую растительность местного ландшафта. Именно поэтому «одомашнивание» станции, привнесение в ее индустриальные, безликие, стерильные пространства элементов личного, теплого, домашнего, и стало одной из ключевых линий исследования. Впервые в жизни ступая на территорию атомной станции, испытываешь смешанные чувства: перед тобой величие и угроза, первое проявлено каждой порой, вторая укрыта в тени раскидистых пальм и в будничном уюте рабочих помещений… Невольно задаешься вопросом: как это ощущают люди, живущие с этим каждый день, на самом ли деле работники не испытывают никакого страха? В фотопроекте участвовали и на вопросы отвечали сотрудники БАЭС: у них разные должности, профессии, возраст; были среди них и те, кто строил и запускал первые энергоблоки, ветераны.

Nuclear power is one of the youngest industrial fields. It is still being studied, and the ways to manage nuclear power are being continually improved. The Atom as a destructive weapon slowly becomes domesticated and turned into a “peaceful” atom — that is, serving to benefit humanity. About 15 percent of the world power is now generated by nuclear power plants. 10 percent of elecricity in the Sverdlovsk region is generated by the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant.

The Beloyarsk plant (BAES) is located 45 kilometeres from Ekaterinburg and 3 km from the town of Zarechny. The Beloyarsk plant was the second nuclear station built in the country (after the Siberian nuclear plant) and has been in operation since 1964.

The plant was built in two stages: first, units No.1 and No.2 with AMB reactors were launched; at the second stage, a third unit with a BN-600 reactor was built. After 17 and 22 respective years of operation, the 1st and the 2nd units were put out of service in 1981 and 1989. Today they are in a long-term suspension mode, with all nuclear fuel unloaded from the reactors.

Today, only one power unit BN-600 is in operation at the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant.

It is the only unit in the world to work successfully on a fast neutron reactor. However, at some point in the near future the launch of the 4th unit with an improved BN-800 fast neutron reactor will commence.

Most people in the world are afraid of nuclear power. After all, everybody heard about nuclear accidents and their horrific consequences. Times are changing though, and the domestication of the atom continues, and the science is moving on.

The fear, experienced by most people, seems to be totally unfamiliar to the nuclear plant’s staff and to the residents of Zarechny. For them, the Beloyarsk plant is a source of life, a home to which they are genuinely attached, which they improve and decorate.

The town and the plant form a single organism immersed into the lush vegetation of the local landscape.

This is why the “domestication” of the power plant — an introduction of something personal, warm and homely into its industrial, faceless, sterile spaces — became one of the key lines of the research. When you set foot on the site of the nuclear plant for the first time, you experience mixed emotions. You see both greatness and threat; the former is in every breath, while the latter is covered by the shade of sprawling palm trees and by the mundane coziness of the work rooms. Inevitably you begin to ask yourself: how do people who live with this every day experience all this? Are the staff really not afraid at all?

The Beloyarsk plant employees took part in the photo project and answered questions.

All of them have different jobs, professions and ages. Among them there were also the veterans — those who had launched the first energy units.

Этот проект — результат сразу трех резиденций: виртуальной, проведенной в «Майнкрафте» в 2014 году, выездной, прошедшей в июне — июле 2015 года в Кремниевой долине (Калифорния) и Уральской индустриальной, в рамках которой группа Ars Virtua посещала уральские заводы вместе со всеми художниками программы в июле 2015-го. В итоге этих резиденций группа Ars Virtua пришла к заключению о необходимости показать важность идеи знания в обществе в целом и информационной непрерывности в частности. Сегодня в постинформационном обществе мы слишком полагаемся на доступность информации, не задумываясь о том, насколько уязвимыми мы в этот момент оказываемся. Доступ к информации невозможен без ключа: будь то знание программного кода или иностранного языка. Не обладая этим знанием, мы рискуем не расшифровать информацию. Художников искренне поразил этот парадокс, согласно которому, для того чтобы обладать самой информацией, ты должен обладать информацией о том, как она устроена, и они решили предпринять безусловно утопические усилия по созданию некоего универсального языка, понять который возможно и без знания кода.

В качестве алфавита этого языка был предложен ряд символов, сгенерированных на основе визуальных данных Google. Эти символы выводились на титановый экран, состоящий из 256 пикселей, каждый из которых приводился в движение отдельным моторчиком. После того как экран проработал месяц в режиме поочередной смены символов, было решено законсервировать изображение, поскольку значительная часть механизмов стала выходить из строя. На стене напротив можно было видеть экран, разделенный на девять мониторов — на них медиаторы биеннале дают свою интерпретацию символам универсального языка. Любопытно, что тот символ, который было решено законсервировать на экране, ключевой символ биеннале, ктото назвал «завод», а кто-то — «дом».

This project is a result of three residences: the virtual one, realized in Minecraft in 2014, the field one, done in June-July 2015 at the Silicon Valley (California) and the Ural industrial one — within which the Ars Virtua group visited the Ural factories together with all the artists of the program in July 2015.

As a result of these residences the Ars Virtua group came up to a conclusion about the need to show the importance of the idea of knowledge in the society in general and informational continuity in particular. Nowadays, in the post-informational society, we count too much on the accesibility of information, without thinking how vulnerable we are at this moment. If you do not have a key, you do not have any access to information: it does not matter if we speak about programming code or foreign language. Without having this knowledge we are at risk of not decoding the information. The artists were sincerely impressed by this paradox, according to which, the one who wants to own the information, first has to own the information about how it works. And they decided to take undoubtedly extremely utopic efforts and create a kind of universal language, which can be understood without any code.

A set of symbols, generated on the basis of visual data library of Google, was proposed as an alphabet of this language. These symbols were demonstrated on titanium screen, composed of 256 pixels, each of them put to motion by a special motor. After a month of the operation of the screen in the regime of a constant change of symbols, a decision to fix the image was made, because of the fact that many mechanisms were out of order.

On the opposite wall you can see the screen split into nine monitors — there, the biennial mediators give their interpretations of symbols of the universal language. It is curious that the symbol which was decided to be fixed on the screen, the key symbol of the biennial, some called a “factory” and others — a “house”.

Зритель — фигура крайне абстрактная, по-разному описанная в эстетической, искусствоведческой, маркетинговой теориях. И, как бы нам ни казалось, что все наше художественное производство смыслов имеет своей целью цельное сообщение зрителю, мы никогда не можем очертить его (зрителя) контуры достаточно четко, не можем ни разгадать его, ни предельно унифицировать. Единожды придуманная, описанная и произведенная работа представляется зрителю, но существует ли в выставочной действительности такая геометрия, в которой пересекаются горизонты создания и восприятия? Приведу случаи из жизни Итоговой выставки программы Арт-резиденций, которые иллюстрируют возможные ответы на этот вопрос.

Случай первый: классический, с уборщицей. На десятый день работы выставки исчез фарфоровый сервиз Вовы Марина. Порядка тридцати предметов с одинаковыми фигурными сколами — «сломано вручную в Екатеринбурге» — были педантично сложены в мусорный пакет и чуть-чуть не вынесены из здания. Никакого злого умысла — просто эстетическая пропасть: нарушенный порядок повседневности, робко притаившийся за отельной тафтой для одних — оборачивается будничным беспорядком для других. Случай второй: о порядке и вовлеченности. Номер 805, где расположился проект Бернхарда Рэна Re-generation, остался единственным собственно отельным номером на выставке. В нем сохранился не только антураж, но и следы жизнедеятельности постояльцев. Предметы быта, одежда, постельное белье, остатки скромного праздника на столе — все это не могло оставить зрителей безучастными. Нужно признать, что возможность участвовать в жизни номера: перекладывать предметы, использовать пену для бритья, добавлять пустые бутылки на послепраздничный стол — привлекала зрителей больше, чем гостеприимное приглашение присесть на диван и, наслаждаясь критическим текстом о посткапитализме, посмотреть видео и послушать оригинальный индустриальный звук в электронной обработке. Случай третий: об откровениях. Но бывало, что люди засиживались в 805-м при распахнутой двери, и тогда — особенно в вечерние часы — их охватывала гипнотическая волна: звуки природы, неправленые, живые, пойманные Хесусом Паломино в Калаче, врывались в царство синтетического, пусть и основанного на подлинном, индустриального звука, отбивающего ритм посткапиталистического мира. Случай четвертый: о желании остаться. Еще одна комната, где зрители часто задерживались, уже посмотрев экспозицию — это проект Федора Телкова «Одомашнивание». Туда часто приходили фотографироваться в несколько зловещих зеленых

The spectator is an utmost abstract figure, described differently in aesthetics, art history and marketing theory. It does not matter how sure we may be that all our artistic production of meanings aims at creating an integral message to the spectator, we can never outline her/his contours visible enough, and we cannot decipher or unify her/him.

Once it is invented, described and produced, a piece of art is presented to the spectator, but does somewhere in the reality of the exhibition exist such a kind of geometry where the horizon of creation intersects with the one of perception? I will show the cases from the life of the Final exhibition of the Artist-inResidence program that illustrate the possible answers to this question.

Case number one: classical, with a cleaner. On the tenth day of the exhibition the porcelain set (by Vova Marin) has disappeared. About thirty objects with equal designed chips — “hand broken in Ekaterinburg” — were accurately put into the trash bag and almost thrown away from the building. There was no malicious intent — but an aesthetic precipice: disrupted order of the everyday life, shyly hidden behind the hotel taffeta curtain, for ones, turns out to be a routine disorder for others.

Case number two: order and involvement. Room 805, where the project Re-generation (by Bernhard Rehn) was installed, was the only real hotel room left at the exhibition.

Not only the entourage was preserved there, but the traces of guests’ life were also present. Everyday objects, clothes, bed sheets, remains of the modest feast on the table — all that could not leave the audience indifferent. It is necessary to admit that the possibility to participate in the life of the room: to move the objects, to use shaving balm or to add empty bottles on the postfestive table — attracted people somehow more than friendly invitation to sit down on the sofa and, enjoying the critical text about post-capitalism, to watch the video and listen to the original industrial electronically processed sound.

Case number three: revelations. But sometimes people were staying in the room 805 with the door thrown open and then — especially in the late evening hours — hypnotic wave was covering them: natural sounds, live, without much of edition, caught by Jesus Palomino in Kalach, burst into the kingdom of synthetic, even based on genuine, but still industrial sound, which beats the rhythm of the post-capitalist world.

Case number four: desire to stay. One more room where spectators used to stay already after they saw the exhibition was the project by Feodor Telkov, Domestification. People often came there just to take pictures in slightly sinister green diode lights.

Thus, many were entrapped by the coziness created by the artist and reinforced by the historical blue leather chairs, brought from the nuclear power plant.

Случай пятый: об объектах найденных и потерянных. Objets trouvés, привезенные с фарфорового завода, составили проект «Остатки» Стефана Тиде. Выставленнные в виде «подвижной инсталляции», они все время перемещались, то придавая композиции облик античных руин, то отдаляя ее от него, иногда и вовсе исчезали, выходя из игры. Случай шестой: об игре. Наблюдая за зрителями на территории проекта Александра Морозова «Регистрация: между созерцанием и действием», я пришла к выводу, что они воспринимали это пространство как зону игры. Попадая в лабиринты четырех комнат, следя за движением неровных линий, маячками точек на карте и данностью объектов, выросших словно из ткани самой гостиницы «Исеть». Зрители принимали вызов, начинали спорить со спутниками о сути проделанного художником пути или разгадывали ребус изломанных линий, бродя в тишине среди листов.

Случай седьмой: об интриге и тайне. В силу технических особенностей проектов, не все из них разместились на 7-м и 8-м этажах гостиницы. «Коса» Стефана Тиде расположилась в подвале восточной башни и, из соображений обеспечения зрительской безопасности, попадать туда предполагалось только в сопровождении гида. Вполне предсказуемо, это ограничение было воспринято как запрет и вскоре после открытия выставки в соцсетях появились инструкции, как его обойти, а многие, подходили формально к его соблюдению и сами превращались в гидов «по подвалу» для своих друзей. Случай восьмой: о данных поводах и шансах. Работа выставки в целом навела на мысль о тотальном пренебрежении запретами. Простая просьба «не трогать руками» — слишком банальна, чтобы ее соблюдать, а «не уносить понравившиеся произведения искусства» — требование невысказанное, но вроде бы висящее в атмосфере любой выставки — не работает, когда речь идет о фарфоровом солдатике. Он был украден из экспозиции и вскоре заменен на идентичный образец: так зрители вынудили проект к развитию и вместо экспериментального образца был изготовлен тиражный. Случай девятый: о недоверии к материалу. «Тираж 1/1» называется проект Жени Мачневой, составленный из абсолютно уникальных тканых работ. Кажется, это — произведение, рукотворность которого совершенно очевидна. Однако не раз приходилось слышать предположения о том, что эти натюрморты напечатаны на основе компьютерной графики. Похожая реакция невнимательного зрителя встречалась и на проект Вовы Марина «Письмена»: здесь невероятным казался факт того, что речь идет о точной копии заводских напольных плит, выполненной в материале. Почему-то убеждали цифры: видимо, пятьсот метров сварочного шва — весомый аргумент. Случай десятый: о процессах и разговорах. Конечно, сложно переоценить роль экскурсии, особенно кураторской, особенно для того, кто ее проводит — ведь ни одна экспликация не передаст тебе это ощущение: ты объясняешь и видишь, как в глазах вспыхивает понимание. Это заметно особенно, когда в проекте процесс важен не меньше результата, как у «Baltensperger + Siepert. Воспроизведение себя», где эксперимент по созданию художников, хотя и может быть представлен манифестом, вряд ли может быть им описан, и в проекте

Case five: objects lost and found. Objets trouvés, brought from the Porcelain factory, composed The Rests project of Stéphane Thidet. Being presented as a movable installation they were in perpetual motion — alternately approaching the composition to the image of the antique ruins or estranging it from one, sometimes they even quitted the game, totally disappearing.

Case six: the game. Observing the spectators on the territory of Alexander Morozov’s Registration. Contemplate/Act, I concluded that many of them perceived this space as a game zone. Entering the labyrinth of four rooms, following the movement of irregular lines, beacons of points on the map and reality of the objects, which look if they just have grown out of the tissue of the Iset Hotel itself. The spectators took the challenge and began to argue with their companions about a way the artist made or to solve the puzzles of broken lines, wandering in the silence among the plates.

Case seven: mystery and intrigue. Due to the technical features of the projects, not all of them were located on the 7th and 8th floors of the hotel. The Scythe (by Stéphane Thidet) was placed in the basement of the east tower, and, for the reasons of spectator’s safety, entering there was possible only in the company of a guide. Quite predictably, this restriction was understood as an interdiction and soon after the opening one could find an instruction on how to evade it in the social networks. Some of the visitors also decided to literally follow the rule and themselves became the “basement guides” for friends.

Case eight: given reasons and chances. The exhibition as a whole brought the idea of a total disregard of prohibitions to mind. A simple request “do not touch” — too banal to observe it, and “do not take away your favorite work of art” — the unspoken requirement, but seems to be hanging in the atmosphere of any exhibition — will not work when it comes to the porcelain soldier. It was stolen from the exhibition and was soon replaced by an identical piece: thus the audience forced the project to be developed and instead of an experimental sample the replicable object was produced.

Case nine: mistrust of materials. Edition 1/1 is the name of the Zhenya Machneva’s project, composed of absolutely unique tapestry pieces. It seems that nobody would doubt that it is totally handmade. However more than once it was told that these still lifes are printed on the basis of computer graphics. Similar reaction of inattentive spectator could be heard about the project The Characters (by Vova Marin): it was impossible to believe that what is presented is the exact copy of factory floor plates, produced with same material. Only numbers could somehow convince — 500 meters of welding seam look like a heavy argument.

Case ten: processes and conversations. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of the tour, especially the curatorial one, especially for the one who gives it: no paper description can transfer you this feeling, when you explain and suddenly see the understanding flashing in the eyes of the listener. It is especially noticeable when in the project the process plays a part no less important than the result. As in the project “Baltensperger + Siepert”. The reproduction of the self, where the experiment on the creation of the artists, although can be presented by a manifesto, still cannot be described by it. Or in the project by the Ars Virtua, where the screen created for the exhibition continues experiment by itself, being the part of the process which can be interrupted only artificially — can we seriously pretend to exhaust the universal language?

Case eleven: prudence. Jacopo Mandich with his sculpture To the last stone talks about the depletion of the resources. Sneering at the society of consumption,

Случай одиннадцатый: о благоразумии. Об исчерпаемости ресурсов говорит Якопо Мандич своей скульптурой «До последнего камня». Иронизируя над обществом потребления, Якопо предлагает зрителю взять себе кусочек магнезита. Приведу одно наблюдение: человек берет кусок магнезита внизу — с «карьера» начинается осмотр выставки, — проходит с ним девять этажей современного искусства, возвращается и кладет магнезит обратно: исчерпаемый ресурс природы становится возобновляемым ресурсом зрительского внимания. Случай последний: о фланерстве. Второй проект, в котором непосредственное участие зрителя признавалось необходимостью на старте, — это «Мастерская плаката» группы Открытое пространство. На деле модерация работы мастерской на самой выставке не увенчалась успехом: зрители, охваченные стремительностью и, очевидно, многосмысленностью современного искусства не были готовы остановиться, сформулировать высказывание и позволить ему превратиться в плакат. Оказался ли контекст гостиницы «Исеть» более мягким или менее провокационным, чем среда тагильского трамвая — только вот мало кто из посетителей комнаты 712 стал говорить со мной о чем-то, кроме любви.

Jacopo proposes the spectator to take a piece of magnesite. I would like to offer one observation here: a person takes a piece of a stone downstairs — the visit starts from the stone-pit — passes nine floors of contemporary art holding it and then returns and puts it back. Thus, exhaustible natural resource becomes a renewable source of visitor’s attention.

Case, the last one: flâneurs. Another project, where direct interaction was supposed to be necessary from the beginning is the Posters workshop (by Open Place). In fact, the moderation of the workshop at the exhibition was not extremely successful.

Probably, spectators captured by impetuosity and multiple meanings of contemporary art were not ready to stop, and formulate a statement, and to let it be converted into a poster. Or the context of the Iset Hotel just occurred to be softer and less provocative than the environment of the Tagil tram… Anyway there were not many people among the visitors of the room 712, who were ready to talk to me about something other than love.

В творчестве Якопо очень важна экологическая составляющая: в большинстве случаев в работу идут материалы, уже бывшие в использовании или подлежащие утилизации, среди них металл, дерево, стекло и камень. Владимир Марин (vladimir-marin.culturalspot.org) живет и работает в Калуге. При создании произведений зачастую работает с найденными объектами, исследует среду и претворяет в художественный объект ее ключевые элементы, обнажая в них те смыслы, которые прежде присутствовали в скрытой форме.

Baltensperger + Siepert (baltensperger-siepert.com). Художники Штефан Бальтенспергер и Давид Зиперт живут и работают в Цюрихе, сотрудничают с 2007 года. В своей художественной практике Бальтенспергер и Зиперт критически подходят к социальным, культурным и политическим вопросам: они пытаются визуализировать их и создавать модели по управлению ими. Александр Морозов (sashamorozov.ru) родился в Луганске, живет и работает в Санкт-Петербурге. Основные медиа художника — живопись, графика, скульптура, инсталляция. Для художника характерны сочетание разных медиа в одной работе и тяга к созданию тотальных произведений.

Cтефан Тиде (stephanethidet.com) живет и работает в Париже и Обервиле. Создает объектные, часто тотальные инсталляции, сложные объекты. Стефан не предлагает готовых ответов на вопрос о значении своих работ, вызывая зрителей на свободную интерпретацию. Федор Телков (flickr.com/photos/fyodor_telkov) родился в Нижнем Тагиле, живет и работает в Екатеринбурге, является членом Союза фотографов России, занимается в основном жанровой и портретной съемкой, разрабатывает социальную, гуманитарную, индустриальную, этнографическую проблематики, работает со спецификой Уральского региона. Хесус Паломино (jesuspalomino.com) создает проекты, связанные с местами, локациями и коммунальными историями. Каждая из работ появляется как этический и эстетический ответ на такие проблемы, как права человека, экология, культурный диалог и критика демократической системы. Юрий Кручак и Юлия Костерева (openplace.com.ua) живут и работают в Киеве, являются основателями художественной платформы Open Place, которая направлена на расширение границ влияния искусства, а также нацелена на вовлечение людей в процесс творчества через междисциплинарные проекты.

Bernhard Rehn (archexperience.com) works as media and sound artist, as well as architect, designer, scenographer and curator. In his creative work he pays much attention to working with the public space, and to critical analysis of existing socialeconomic systems.

Zhenya Machneva (flickr.com/photos/zhenya_machneva/) was born and works in St. Petersburg. Her creative work is closely linked with a rare technique of tapestry weaving. In her woven canvasses Zhenya often depicts industrial landscapes and still lifes.

Jacopo Mandich (jacopomandich.net) lives in Rome, where in his studio he works with small formats, but is also prone to experimentation. In Jacopo’s creative work an ecological component is very important: in most cases he works with used or going to be disposed materials, among them: metal, wood, glass and stone.

Vladimir Marin (vladimir-marin.culturalspot.org) lives and works in Kaluga. Along the process of art creation he often works with found objects, explores the environment and turns its key elements into the art object, exposing those meanings that were present before in a latent form.

Baltensperger + Siepert (baltensperger-siepert.com). The artists Stefan Baltensperger and David Siepert live and work in Zurich and collaborate since 2007.

In their artistic practice Baltensperger and Siepert critically approach social, cultural and political questions: they try to visualize them and create models to manage them.

Aleksandr Morozov (sashamorozov.ru) was born in Lugansk, lives and works in St. Petersburg. The main media used by the artist are painting, graphics, sculpture, and installation. Characteristic for the artist are combination of different media within one work and inclination to creating total artworks.

Stephane Thidet (stephanethidet.com) lives and works in Paris and Auberville.

He creates object and total installations and complex objects. Stephane does not offer ready answers to the question about the meaning of his works, challenging the audience to free interpretation.

Fyodor Telkov (flickr.com/photos/fyodor_telkov) was born in Nizhny Tagil, lives and works in Ekaterinburg. He is a member of the Union of Photographers of Russia.

He is mainly engaged with genre and portrait photography, and also develops social, humanitarian, industrial, and ethnographic perspectives; works a lot with specifics of the Ural region.

Jesus Palomino (jesuspalomino.com) creates projects related to sites, locations and communal histories. Each of them appears as an ethical and aesthetical question to such questions as human rights, ecology, cultural dialogue, and critics of democracy.

Yury Kruchak and Julia Kostereva (openplace.com.ua) live and work in Kyev. They are the founders of the art platform Open Place, aimed at expanding of the boundaries of influence of art and at engagement of people in the creative process through interdisciplinary projects.

Ars Virtua (arsvirtua.com) is an artistic association, which operates in the field of virtual, interactive art, as well as on creating the objects. Was founded in 2007 by James Morgan.

Сегодня комбинат «Магнезит» обеспечивает полный цикл производства огнеупоров — от добычи сырья до отгрузки широкого спектра продукции конечным потребителям. Основные направления деятельности Фонда поддержки и сохранения культурных инициатив «Собрание» (fundsobranie.ru): содействие просвещению в области искусства, образования, социальной работы, этики; разработка и реализация социальных и благотворительных программ; организация художественных салонов, ярмарок, вернисажей, выставок; осуществление издательской деятельности, создание условий для наиболее эффективной реализации творческого потенциала российских граждан. Белоярская атомная станция им. И. В. Курчатова имеет крупнейший в мире энергоблок с реактором на быстрых нейтронах (БН-600). По показателям надежности и безопасности он входит в число лучших ядерных реакторов мира. Объем вырабатываемой Белоярской АЭС электроэнергии составляет порядка 10% от общего объема электроэнергии Свердловской энергосистемы. Предприятие «Фарфор Сысерти» (farfor-sysert.ru) поддерживает лучшие уральские традиции ручной росписи фарфоровых изделий. Вся продукция относится к народнохудожественным промыслам России, это означает, что в нее вкладывается тепло рук живописцев и частичка их души.

Артинский завод (artiz.ru) — старейшее предприятие Урала. Производство в Артях начали осваивать с 1809 года. В 1827 году завод выпустил первые косы для сельскохозяйственных работ, закаленные по технологии создателя русского булата — великого металлурга П. П. Аносова. С этого времени косы стали основной продукцией завода и были отмечены многочисленными наградами. «Титановая долина» (titanium-valley.com) — строящаяся особая экономическая зона (ОЭЗ) промышленно-производственного типа в Свердловской области, одна из семи российских территорий, где созданы специальные условия для развития промышленного производства. Ирбитский мотоциклетный завод (uralmoto.ru) — единственный в мире завод, производящий тяжелые мотоциклы и один из немногих в мире, который производит мотоциклы с коляской. Сейчас большая часть продукции завода производится на экспорт. Первоуральский новотрубный завод (chelpipe.ru) — один из ведущих производителей стальных труб в России. На ПНТЗ производится свыше 25 000 типоразмеров труб и трубных профилей из 200 марок стали. На заводе работает свыше десяти тысяч человек, а продукция поставляется на крупнейшие предприятия страны. Каслинский завод архитектурно-художественного чугунного литья (kac3.ru) является одним из старейших заводов России, где сохранены вековые традиции чугунного литья. Каслинское литье всегда отличалось неизменно высоким качеством высокотехнологичных отливок и обширной коллекцией моделей. Алапаевская узкоколейная железная дорога находится в ведении муниципального образования Алапаевское (alapaevskoe.ru) и является единственной узкоколейной железной дорогой в России, по которой осуществляются пассажирские перевозки. Тагильский трамвай — это нижнетагильское муниципальное унитарное предприятие, которое занимается транспортным обслуживанием жителей Нижнего Тагила. На предприятии работает порядка 500 человек. Ежедневно на стальные магистрали города длиной 110 км выходит около 54 трамваев в рабочие дни и около 30 в выходные, трамваи курсируют по 11 маршрутам. Нижнесергинский метизно-металлургический завод (nsmmz.ru) — современное высокопроизводительное предприятие черной металлургии, обладающее технологиями мирового уровня. ОАО «НСММЗ» является одним из крупнейших производителей непрерывнолитой стальной заготовки квадратного сечения, сортового проката и катанки.

Magnezit Complex (magnezit.ru) is the biggest subsidiary of the Magnezit Group, where generations of experience are successfully combined with advanced technologies and principles of sustainability. Today the Magnezit Complex covers the whole cycle of production of refractory materials — from crude extraction to shipment of a wide range of products to end users.

The main directions of activity of the Foundation for support and preserve of cultural initiatives Sobranie (fundsobranie.ru) are: promotion of awareness in the fields of art, education, social work, and ethics; development and implementation of social and charity programs; organization of art salons, fairs, vernissages, exhibitions; realization of publishing activity, creation of conditions for effective realization of creative potential of the Russian citizens.

Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Station named after I. V. Kurchatov has the world’s biggest power unit with a fast neutron reactor (BN-600). In terms of reliability and security it is one of the best nuclear units in the world. The amount of electricity generated by the Beloyarsk NPS is about 10% of the total amount of electricity of the Sverdlovsk region power system.

Sysert Porcelain (farfor-sysert.ru) is an example of the best Ural traditions in hand painting of porcelain. All the products belong to folk arts and crafts of Russia, which means that warmth of hands of the painters and part of their souls is in there.

Artinsky Plant (artiz.ru) is the oldest enterprise in the Urals. Manufacturing started to develop in Arti starting from 1809. In 1827 the plant produced the first scythes for agricultural works, tempered in accordance with technology of the great metallurgist P. P. Anosov — the creator of the Russian damask steel. Since then the scythes are the main product of the plant and have won numerous awards.

The Titanium Valley (titanium-valley.com) is a special economic zone (SEZ) of industrial type in the Sverdlovsk region, one of the seven Russian territories, where special conditions for development of industrial production are created.

Irbit Motorcycle Plant (uralmoto.ru) is the world’s only plant producing heavy motorcycles and one of the few in the world that produces motorcycles with a sidecar. Today the most part of production is export-oriented.

Pervouralsky Novotrubny works (chelpipe.ru) is one of the leading producers of steel pipes in Russia. PNTZ produces more than 25 thousand type sizes of pipes and pipe sections from the 200 steel grades. The plant employs more than ten thousand people, and the products are supplied to the biggest enterprises of the country.

Kaslinsky Architectural Art Casting Plant (kac3.ru) is one of the oldest plants in Russia, where centuries-old traditions of cast iron are preserved. Kasli casting always distinguished itself by the high quality of high-tech casting and a wide range of models.

Alapaevsk Narrow-Gauge Railway is administered by the Municipality of Alapaevskoe (alapaevskoe.ru) and is the only narrow-gauge railway in Russia carrying passenger services.

Tagil tram is the Nizhny Tagil municipal unitary enterprise providing transport services for citizens of Nizhny Tagil. The enterprise employs about 500 people. Every day the steel ways of the city, which are 110 km long, carry about 54 trams during working days and about 30 during weekends serving 11 routes.

Nizhneserginsky hardware and Metallurgical works (nsmmz.ru) is a modern highperformance enterprise of ferrous metallurgy possessing world-class technologies. JSC NSMMZ is one of the largest manufacturers of continuous steel billet of square section, long steel and rods.

This book has been published in conjuction with the Artistin-Residence program of the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial of contemporary art, which took place in the summer of 2015 in 11 cities of the Urals.

The Final exhibition called Strategies of Integrative Mobilization was open to the public since September, 9 till November, 10 and occupied the 7th and 8th floors of the Iset hotel (Ekaterinburg, Russia).
