Kognitivní složka empatického procesu slučuje afektivní a kognitivní mentalizaci. V průběhu empatického procesu obě složky „spolupracují“. Váha činnosti jednotlivých složek záleží na kontextu. Uzly a hrany sítě afektivní empatie nejlépe zobrazuje empatie bolesti druhé osoby. Podkladem kognitivní empatie je mentalizační síť. Kognitivní empatie je podkladem usuzování na myšlenky, přesvědčení, záměry druhého člověka. Čistě lidský rozměr poskytuje empatii jazyk jak obsahem, tak prozódií. Další čistě lidský rozměr poskytuje empatii schopnost „být v kůži druhého člověka“, empatickou perspektivu. Empatie má svůj konektom. Různí lidé jsou schopni empatizovat v různé míře.
