Bohové, máte-li rádi staré lidi, jste-li vy sami staří, dbalí úcty k věku, sestupte sem a za mě bojujte! (Ke Goneril) Ty si mi troufáš přijít na oči? Regan, co je? Bereš ji za ruku? A proč ne, otče? Co jsem provedla? Ve své stařecké pomatenosti vidíte ve všem zločin. Vydrž, srdce! Kdo vsadil mého sluhu do klády? Já, pane, ale za své chování by zasloužil hůř ztrestat. Cože? Vy? Otče, tak dost. Myslete na své stáří. Propusťte půlku družiny a s ní se vraťte k sestře. Až uplyne měsíc, můžete přijet k nám. Teď nejsme doma a nejsme přichystáni na váš příchod, takže vás nemůžeme se ctí přijmout. K ní? Vrátit? Chudší o padesát mužů? Ne. Radši budu spát pod širým nebem, vydaný krutým živlům napospas, za přátele mít vlky, výry, snášet bodání bídy! K ní že se mám vrátit? To radši kleknu před tím Francouzem, jenž bez věna si vzal mou nejmladší, a vyžebrám si od něj prostředky na holé živobytí. K ní se vrátit? To radši budu sloužit jako kočí tomuhle grázlovi.
