THE INVETERATE OPTIMIST

It is in the nature of the beast—the human beast—to criticize the little worlds about us as well as the Big World. We see nothing wrong with this, especially if the criticism is construc tive. There’s the rub: more often than not, we begin and end blaming every one else but ourselves, fulminating, pouting that nobody wants to listen and retreating to our little corner in despair.. or feeling that we have thus made our contribution to the solution of the prob lem.

Undoubtedly there is much that is wrong all around us; much to criticize, at every turn. And there is much that is right. There is cause for optimism, and there is reason, too, for pessimism. It augurs well for the Jewish future, for in stance, that there are so many teeners, post-teeners and young-marrieds in our mesivtos and kollelim; so many children being born in frum homes; so many homemakers who really care; so many kosher products on the supermarket shelves or at the corner grocers; so many shomrei shabbos and shomrei mitzvos; so many youngsters enrolling in our yeshivos ktanos; so much giving. Growth. Drawing in souls. Bnai Torah.

We see this and are happy. espe cially if we see only this. Perhaps we do not dare look further: at the intolerable losses that our Jewish community is sustaining each day the thousands of Moon-struck able-bodied young men and women, thousands of Jews-for-J, cultists, anti-religionists, as similationists, intermarrieds, agnostics with the big Jewish hearts, culturists, humanists and plethora of others that are too many to list. The negatives we refuse to see, or see only thorugh a haze: the divorces the broken homes. But the negatives are everywhere about us, and its important that we open our eyes to them, to see how we can gird ourselves to counteract them. Not with

words alone, and not by giving vent to our frustration.

Last Chanukah, the Jewish Homemaker carried Editorial Com ments titled AGAINST ALL ODDS. For those who missed them, we feel they bear reading; for those who read but were not stirred to action, we trust that the effect will be more positive after a second reading. We quote: Against all Odds

“The heavens are the L-rd’s heavens. but the earth He has given to the sons of man to fulfill His will and make it a better place, in accordance with the Master Plan.

The earth has been given us in trust. What we have done with it and with our trust the daily headlines in every part of the globe proclaim loudly and clearly. Mankind cannot be overly proud: too many men have belied their purpose. There is crassness and ugliness where there should have been beauty; bestial ity where there could have been an ap proximation of—or closeness to—the Heavenly Image. Mankind is far from where we should be, and day by daywe are sinking farther from the initial Goal. Not all mankind, of course, buttoo many of us to give us comfort. We are caught up in the madness of the nineteeneighties: the glittering materialism and vanity that bring us down lower and lower to the nether-most level.

And we ourselves, we stand by. By standing idly by and condoning, we are transgressing. We are permitting antimoral forces to gain the ascendancy and retain it. Each moment that we make no attempt to resist these forces makes us more culpable.

Stem the tide! Attempt to stay it!

Tell us it is foolhardy to even think of trying to do so. Tell us it is the veriest idiocy to plant one’s self in the way of a juggernaut and to rain blows upon it

with bare fists; to bombard an M-70tank with a peashooter! Tell us it were great er sense and valor to close our eyes and accept the debacle. Bid us better close our eyes in prayer to the Almighty that He visit upon twentieth century Sodom brimstone to immolate its evil.. or visit upon the universe another deluge so that civilization may start anew, perhaps with better results. In prayer, because otherwise we are helpless: we are as specks of nothing, without substance, without power. Tell us it is foolhardy to dare: that the odds against our acomplishing anything at all are great beyond imagining and we can not but fail!

And we respond: we know what odds are. The Jew has always known. As Jews we have ever been the few who have fought against the many: the tiny David who did battle against the gigan tic Goliath; the Maccabees who refused to be intimidated by the Macedonian hordes; the comparative handful of Is raelis who withstood the uncounted screaming madmen who tried to dis place them and drive them into the sea; the miniscule force for morality-andgood that has saved the world from utter destruction. Was there a chance of vic tory—the minutest chance? So many thought there was none at all; so many think that there is none in any Jewish battle joined. But Antiochus, the Hamans, the Hitlers and the PLOs have discovered, to their discomfiture, that one Jew committed to his Jewishness is a force potent enough to withstand thousands. One Jew who is ready to fight, to espouse a Cause, is the equiva lent of a regiment.

But there are too many of us who are not ready to take up arms, who are not fighting who are not fighting hard enough who are not espousing the Cause.

Is it because the Cause has passed them by, or that they do not believe in it strongly enough? Is it because they we—are overwhelmed by malaise or paralysis and find excuse after excuse for our inactivity?

The jaws of death had clamped tight about millions and millions of our brother and sister Jews in Germany, in Russia, in Iraq and all the lands of tyranny of the soul. They still are, in Iran, and even here in our United States

The Sidra Sh’lach recounts the familiar story of the spies who were sent by Moses to investigate the land of Canaan prior to its Divinely or dained conquest. Although each spy was personally chosen by Moses and each was quite familiar with G-d’s promise, ten of the twelve defied the Almighty’s will and told the people that the land was unconquerable. Even further, their fear of the Canaanites was so profound the Tal mud tells us they said: “The inhabit ants are stronger than Him” even the Almighty could not conquer them!

This conclusion is so ridiculous, the question must be asked: How could the M’raglim (spies) have pos sibly erred this far? These were men of faith and understanding, they were righteous men and wise men. What is the source of an error of this magnitude?

There is a classical parable which describes the process of becoming lost. One doesn’t suddenly find him self in the depths of the dark, track less forest. Instead, one deviates from the familiar, broad highway

only a step at a time. Gradually and imperceptibly, one strays farther and farther fromt he road until one ends up in the forest. This is what hap pened to the M’ragllm: they started out as wise and righteous princes of their tribes, who knew the will and power of the Almighty, and they ended as “rebels.”

What was the original step the original hair-breadth of their error?

According to the founder of Chabad Chassidus, the Alter Rebbe, their first imperceptible error consisted of an unwillingness to be come involved in the mundane world. In the desert, they were well isolated from the world of hardships they “had it made.” A miracle fed them (manna), a miracle gave them water (Miriam’s well), a miracle pro vided them with clothing, and miraculous clouds hid them from their enemies. But once in Canaan, their very first task would be to wage war an effort which wastes time and energy even the Almighty would miraculously prevent casual ties and bloodshed. This time and ef fort could better be devoted to the study ofTorah.

Moreover, once the war would be won, they would be required to plow and sow and tend vineyards, quite understandably, the M’ragltrn hesi tated to leave the desert in order to enter the material world. In the des ert they could devote all of their time and energy to Torah.

By distinction, Moses (who re flected Divine Will) insisted that the Jews leave the desert and settle in the land of Israel. The ultimate aim and fulfillment of Torah is Maaseh deed! The culmination ofTorah is its actualization and implementation in the real world. It is not sufficient to become involved in Torah theory. On the contrary, the land of Canaan with its thirty-one different cultures (all alien to Torah) had to be actually, practically conquered to make it a Holy land to integrate theory and practice into a unified entity.

This minor error oftheM’raglim_ their adherence to a philosophy which divorced theory from practice and the spiritual from the material, was their first wrong step; other steps followed until their reasoning became so perverted that they came

to make the absurd statement that “The inhabitants are stronger than Him.”

Thus, the fundamental error ofthe M’ragltm the spies sent by Moses to investigate the Land of Canaan was their reluctance to apply Torah to practtce in a materialistic, worka day world.

There is yet another dimension to the classical “theory versus practice” conflict. It is best represented by the difference between ancient Greek science and today’s modem science. Among the Greeks, a fixed and inflex ible theory was all important and sa cred. If facts or observations disag reed with a well formulated theory, the facts and observations were questioned or denied. In contrast, modern science is empirical: theories are derived from observa tions and carefully planned experi ments. Any theory, to be authentic, must be able to account for new phenomena as they are discovered.

In this respect, the M’raghm repre sented the same school of thought as the discredited school of Greek philosophical science. They had a good theory, but were hesitant about putting it to an experimental test in a material world. Moses, on the other hand, insisted on the translation of theory into practical actions and deeds. Torah instruction would be valid only if carried out by a people who sowed, reaped, and worked for six days out of seven.

Practical implementation oftheory is also emphasized by Maimonides who described the criteria which mark a chochom or wise man. He points out that a chochom is recog nizable just as much by his deeds, his eating and drinking habits, his business transactions, his dress, etc., as by his theoretical knowledge. The consistency of theory with prac tice is essential; otherwise the incon sistency can lead to perversion. The story is told that Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, was once found in a compromising moral situation. When challenged, he is reputed to have said: “At this moment, I am not Aristotle.”

Torah recognizes no such dichotomy. To be a chochom, wis dom must influence all of one’s ac

tions in the classroom and outside it. Otherwise the actions will not only lack wisdom, they might actually be come directed by other forces which take over when wisdom “drops out”. A man is not a disjointed group ofor gans which act independently. If the head doesn’t control the feet, the feet might ultimately control the head. If the brain does not regulate the des ires, the desires will control the body

arid it will be evident that the brain itself is out of order.

This, quite possibly, is what hap pened to the M’raglim. They started with an excellent theory. But they were unwilling to test it in practice. As a consequence the theory itselfbe came inadequate (they did not fulfill G-d’s will) and ultimately, the theory led to perversion (they disavowed the power of G-d).

The Philosophical Approach Nature’s Laboratory of the Renewal of Life

The first Jewish philosopher in the Common Era wrote: “When the menstrual issue occurs, a man must not touch a woman, but must, dur ing that period, refrain from inter course, and respect the law of na ture. He must also bear in mind that the generative seed should not be wasted fruitlessly for the sake of gross and untimelypleasure. For it is just as if a husbandman should, while in a state of intoxication or lu nacy, sow wheat and barley in ponds or in the plains which should be dry before the seed is laid in them. Na ture also each month purges the womb as if it were a corn field, a field with mysterious properties, over which, like a good husbandman, he must watch for the right time to ar rive. so while the field is till inun dated he should withold the seed, which otherwise would be silently swept away by the stream. In the womb, nature’s laboratory, the mois ture not only relaxes but utterly paralyzes the seminal nerve forces which mould the living creature and which, with consummate craftsmanship, perfect each part, both of the body and soul. But when menstruation ceases, he may boldly sow the generative seeds, no longer fearing that what he sows will perish.” (Philo Judaeus, The Special Laws, III, 3 1—33.)

The Symbol of Family Purity: The Mlkvah

What is a Mikvah?

Literally, the word means “gather ing”; specifically, the “gathering of waters,” as in the account of the Cre ation in Genesis 1, 10 and in Lev, XI, 36 Mikva maim. Traditionally, it refers to a ritual bath, built accord ing to rabbinic specifications. The initial source of the water must be natural and not drawn by means ofa vessel (sh’uvim), a man made con tainer. Its source must be either a natural spring, rain, or water ob tained from ice. Other water may be added, once the minimum Mikvah requirements have been met. The Mikvah must at all times contain a minimum of 40 seah of water. That is traditionally 24 cubic feet or ap proximately 180 gallons.

In modern times, in buildings con taining the Ritualartum, a phrase which is now popularly accepted as the definition for “the place of ritual immersion” (coined by the present author in 1935), there is, in addition to the pools used for immersion, a distinct and original Mikvah built ac cording to rabbinic rules. A conduit leads to these pools so that the water therein is always connected with the basic water in the original Mikvah.

History of Mikvah Observance

The fundamental law is derived from Lev. XVIII, 19, which deals with the prohibition against intercourse during the wife’s monthly period. A tractate known as “Mikvaot,” con cerned with the different rules for the preparation and fitness of “ritual baths,” complements the tractate NIDDAH.

The observance of Mikvah was al ways considered of paramount im portance in Jewish life. Records of the Middle Ages (Augsburg 1290), speak of a “Jew’s Bath” near the synagogue. It would seem that in every community, the synagogue had a ritual font adjacent to it. (See I. Abrahams: Jews in the Middle Ages, p. 72).

There are also records in the Mekhilta (the ancient Rabbinic com mentary to Exodus XXXII, 17), of Jews who were ready to give up their lives rather than violate these laws. Our own grandparent and, in many instances, even our mothers risked their lives in order to puri1~r them selves. Where there were no conve nient ritualaria, such as we have today, they surmounted difficulties by “chopping holes” in the thick ice in frozen rivers in midwinter, in order to observe the law ofTEVILAH. Rabbinic authority sanctioned this only under certain contingencies and rules.

Jews who abolished the practice of Mikvah as set by rabbinic direction even lost their characteristic Jewish qualities, and finally, their power of survival.

The Relative Importance of These Laws

According to Jewish law, if a com munity has insufficient means with which to provide a Synagogue, a Sefer Torah, and a Mikvah, the latter takes precedence over the other two. A Synagogue or Sefer Torah may even be sold to provide funds for the Mikvah. (See MeshiuDavar 1,45, by Rabbi Naftali Zevi Berlin).

The Real Purpose of the Mikvah

Sanitation, cleanliness and phys ical health are concomitants to obedience of this law. Basically, the observance implies submission to the will of G-d. A woman must be physically clean before she enters the Mikvah. The main purpose is santifi cation and purification. TEVILAH IS A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE, GIV ING THE WOMAN THE SEAL OF SACREDNESS AND RESPECT.

As this rite is of a physico spiritual, not of a purely physical order, it comes within the sphere of the interaction of matter and spirit, ofbody and soul, which is admittedly a mystery of mysteries.

Among the Jews, the ritual process of purification by immersion was practised before taking part in any action of a particularly religious sig nificance. The purification of a Jewish woman after Niddah permits her entrance into a holy sphere, be cause marital relations between hus band and wife are considered by the Jew as a ritual holy act. The woman has prepared herself for conception, and this can have an influence only for good on the physical, moral, and spiritual values ofthe newborn child.

Why a Mikvah and Not a Bathtub?

An ordinary bathtub is not so con structed as to contain water originat ing from a natural spring. It cannot therefore serve the purpose of Mik vah. mere cleansing for hygienic purposes is not sufficient, from the Jewish point of view, although a bath or shower is re4uired before im mersion in aMikvah. Teuilah isbasi cally cleansing plus SANCTIFICA TION and IMMERSION. Psychologi cally, the requirement of Tevilah serves as a deterrent to premature in tercourse, whereas a bath, usually taken any time, could not have that restraining influence.

There is as much difference be tween bathtub and Mikvah as there is between “trefah” meat cleansed and Kosher meat prepared according to Jewish law.

A Jewess who does not perform Tevilah in a proper Mikvah cannot be called a sincere, observant Jewish wife. Only her Tevilah manifests her loyalty to the Jewish Law.

The Modern Ritualarium

In manyAmerican cities the obser vance of the Mikvah ritual has been strengthened by the building of a Moc~el Mikvah known as Ritualarium. The purpose is to meet the aesthetic needs of the modern woman. The outstanding features of such a Model Mikvah are:

1. Individual Font insuring pri vacy and accomodating only one person at a time.

2. Ever-changing water a fresh supplyfor each visitor.

3. Bathrooms with colored tubs, tiled floors, and walls lined with bevelled mirrors.

4. Ultra-Violet Ray Lamps benefi cial to health, and used for sterilizing freshly laundered linen.

5. Modern beauty parlors with hair driers and other feminine needs.

6. Nominal fees since it is a com munity undertaking and not a private enterprise. There is no feefor those who cannot afford it.

The Ritual for the Observance ofFamily Purity

(These Laws are compiled from the Shulchan Aruch). The terminol ogy used in this pamphlet is in accor dance with the Biblical rendition and source in Leviticus 15:19, “And !f a woman have an issue, and her issue in herfiesh be blood, she shall be in her impurity seven days.”

The Stages ofNiddah-Tevilah

The various stages of the complete period of Niddah-Tevilah may be summed up as follows:

1. The Separation Before the Menses.

2. The Beginning of the Menstrual Flow.

3. The Minimum Five-day Period of Menstrual Flow.

4. The Seven-day Period of Count ing.

5. Preparation For Immersion.

6. The Ritual Bath or Immersion (Mikvah).

7. The Blessing.

8. The Resumption of Married Re lations Until the Next Appear ance of the Menses.

The Rules ofNiddah-Tevilah

1. Separation before the menses Separation

No intimacy is permitted im mediately before the expected period of menstruation.

Time of Separation

Separation is practiced the day or night prior to expected menstrual flow. Thus, if the menses are regular and due during the day, separation should begin on the night before. In ternal examination does not substi tute for this required separation.

If the menses are regularly due at night, correct separation should al ready be practiced from the morning previous.

Normal marital relations may be had, if the awaited menses did not arrive on the expected day, only after an internal examination (bedikah).

2. How the Cycle is Established in Halakhah:

a. Pre-Menstrual Tensions

If the onset of menstruation is in variably accompanied by physical symptoms such as cramping, headache, malaise, etc., these herald the general oncoming of the Niddah state. Niddah separation begins with the appearance of these signs.

b. Time of the Month

One must remember to observe in addition to the symptoms:

1. The date ofthe Jewish month cor responding to the date of the last menses—e.g., the 15th ofNisan, the 15th of lyar, etc.

2. The number of days which elapsed from the beginning of one’s first period till the next, e.g., 28 days.

3. The 30th day after the onset ofthe last menses.

An expert Rabbi should be con sulted for any decisions in practice, especially where the periods are ir regular.

Every woman should carefully re cord her periodic menses and any accompanying symptoms, keeping a calendar. This will greatly help in es tablishing the time for separation.

Regular Periods

A regular period is designated by

the recurrence of the menses either thrice on the same corresponding date of each month e.g., the 10th ofNisan, the 10th of lyar, the 10th of Sivan, or by four times in succession with equally spaced intervals of days between the menses, e.g., three in tervals of 28 days each.

Irregular Menses

When the periods are irregular, the following rules apply:

1. On those days which have been definitely established that there would be no flow, cohabitation is permitted without any previous self-examination.

2. If the time of the beginning ofthe menses varies 2 or 3 days before or after a certain spaced number of days, a competent Rabbi should be consulted for direction.

The Slightest Flow

The tiniest drop of blood renders one a Nidcjah at all times. Hence, as soon as the menses are expected, the woman should examine herself care fully, using clean white linen. She should not bathe at that time for fear that she will wash away anypre-exis tent blood stain.

Discovery of a Blood Stain

When a doctor inserts an instru ment into the cervical canal, the woman is often rendered Niddczh thereby (possibly even without see ing blood). Digital examination does not present this problem. In such a case, too, a Rabbi should be con sulted. (For practical reasons it would therefore be best if such an examination could take place at the end of the period and prior to the counting of the seven clean days.)

Color ofDishcharge

A discharge even ofpinkish hue or gray tones renders her a Nictdah. If there is a white colorless discharge, the woman is not a Niddah. In case of any other colored discharge, e.g., yellow or brown, a Rabbi should be consulted.

Stains on Garments

When a stain is discovered on her body, undergarments, bed cloths, etc., even though she did not feel its flow and cannot trace it to any other cause, a Rabbi should be consulted. Her state ofpurity maydepend on the

time when she noticed something unusual, and this stain may be evi denced ofa recurrence ofher flow.

If the stain is found on a colored garment or can be traced to some other source or cause, the state of Niddah is not definite.

In all cases of doubt, a Rabbi with specific training in Niddah laws, should be immediately consulted as to the procedure; separation is prac ticed until his decision.

3. Conduct during Period oflViddah Relations With Husband

The husband is forbidden to have any marital intercourse with his wife during the entire period, until he knows definitely that she has pur ified herself in the Mikvah at the proper time.

General Abstinences

During the time that the woman is in the state of Niddah, all physical contact whatsoever is forbidden. Anything that may lead to such con tact, as preparing one’s bath, eating together from the same plate or sit ting in close proximity to one another in a moving vehicle, or even passing or throwing of any article from the hand of one to that of another should be avoided. Rather the object should be first set down for the other to pick up. When meals are taken together, not in the company ofother people, there should be some distinctive, recognizable object usu ally not on the table, to remind them of her status. When one of them is sick and needs care, and no outside help is available, an inquiry should be made ofa competent Rabbi.

In the presence of each other the following care should be taken: not to sit on the other’s bed and not to serve the food directly before the other. The wife should also refrain from preparing her mate’s bed in his pre sence. The following abstinences should also be observed by the hus band in his wife’s presence: not to glance at any usually concealed limb of her person and not to eat or drink from that individual portion of which she has partaken.

Separate Beds

The Jewish practice of separated beds for married couples is thus a

necessity, assuring the proper obser vance of these abstinences.

4. The End ofthe Niddah Period The Minimum Five Days

The woman is to count a minimum of five days, including the days of menstrual flow. This applies even if only one drop issued forth on the first day and no more was seen later. Generally, there may be five or more days of actualy flow.

Even if the woman did not see any further issue after the beginning of her menses, it is still imperative that the period of menstruation be con sidered as lasting a minimum of five days.

If the flow continued beyond five days, she cannot begin the count of the “7 days” till it ceases completely, ascertaining the end of the menstrual flow.

Examination

In the late afternoon ofthe fifth day she should remove all stained under garments and thoroughly wash the lower regions of her body with warm water. (A complete bath would be ad visable). She should be finished with her body cleansing, ready for the examination, about 20 minutes be fore sunset (or near the Shabbat can dle lighting time).

If unable to be home at this time, she may wash herself in the morn ing, change her undergarments, and double check before the examination that her person and clothes are clean.

Manner ofExamination

The examination should be made with a soft, absolutely spotless white linen or cotton cloth, approximately 3 to 4 square inches. This should be wrapped around the index or middle finger, and therewith penetrate care fully and as deeply as possible. The cloth is to be gently rotated, to ascer tain positively whether there are any blood particles in any of the tissue folds or crevices. Ifnot unduly irritat ing, the cloth should be reinserted and left in place for approximately30 minutes.

It is advisable to make this exami nation while standing with one foot on the floor and the other foot raised on a chair; their position facilitates proper examination.

Change of Garments

Before the examination the woman should put on fresh under garments. which must be white. She should also change her bedclothes, etc. ifimpossible, for some reason, at least the ones in use must be abso lutely clean.

Counting the Seven Days

If there is no evidence of any blood stain or any yellowish or brownish color at that examination, the woman begins to count her sevenday period known as Y’mai n’kiyim, i.e., “free of any bloody discharge”.

Extreme care should be taken in her dailycounting. For instance, ifthe menstrual flow began on Saturday night, Sunday is the first day. Thurs day, at sundown, will then be the end of the fifth day and the examination will be made on Thursday evening before sunset. The seven “clean days” are then counted from Friday. Tevilah will be on the following Thursday night.

5. The Seven Day Period of Counting

Daily Inspection

In addition to the initial compul sory examination to ascertain the cessation of the menstrual flow, there should be a twice daily, double inspection, bedikah, by good light, in the morning and also in the eve ning before sunset.

The “cessation of flow” bedikah (inspection) prior to the first ofthe seven preparatory days, and the be dikah of the first day and of the seventh days are absolutely essen tial.

If a bedikah is omitted after the second day, by accident, or if there are medical considerations that would prevent daily bedikah, rab binic advice should be sought.

Interruption ofthe “Clean” Days

The seven “clean” days must be consecutive. If a spot of blood is noticed, she is rendered unclean until the flow ceases. Thereafter, she must count a seven day period anew.

6. The Preparation forthe Immersion

The Cleansing

After the seven-day “counting period” and a final careful self-exami nation and before the Ritual Bath,

there must be absolute cleanliness of every limb. This cleansing should be done in a bathtub and followed by a shower.

Nose, ears, naval, and nipples should be thoroughly cleaned.

Many abstain from eating meat be fore the Ritual Bath to avoid particles becoming lodged between the teeth. Care of the Hair

The hair should be thoroughly combed, so that no single hair be knotted or matted. The cleansing should be done with warm water and soap.

Care of the Nails and Teeth

The nails of the hands and toes must be cleaned, carefully cut; polish should be removed. The matron of the Milcvah should ascertain the adequacy of this preparation.

Extreme care should be taken that no particles should remain lodged between the teeth. It is advisable that a toothbrush and dental floss be used to facilitate the cleansing of the teeth. If there are any false teeth, or temporary filling, these are to be re moved.

Adhesive Substances

There should be no foreign sub stances or adhesive imatter such as plaster bandages, dough, clotted blood, etc., on the body. It must be free of any substance that prevents the water from reaching every part of the body. All rings and earrings must be removed. Any stains caused by ink, or cosmetics or wax should be wiped offbeforehand.

7. The Time of Immersion A Private Matter

This is a private and personal mat ter known only to the husband. It should be performed modestly and is not a subject for conversation even with a close friend.

Supervision

The cleansing and combing of the hair referred to above should be done as close to the time of immersion as possible. Even if a woman has cleansed herself properly at home, a quick checkup of cleanliness is nec essarybefore the Ritual Bath. it is ad visable that the cleansing take place in the bathtub at the Ritualarium, under the supervision ofthe matron.

The bath shold be leisurely, with de liberate care to achieve maximum cleanliness.

Time for Immersion in The Mikvah

This ritual immersion should be taken at the proper time, i.e., on the seventh day after the stars have ap peared. It must not be done before and also not to be delayed unneces sarily. Daytime immersion is not per mitted as a rule.

Tevilah time occurring on Yom Kippur or on Tisha b’Av must be postponed. So also Tevilah is not to be performed during shivah the seven days of mourning.

Postponement

Only in case ofdanger, owing to ex treme cold or fear of travelling through lonely or dangerous neigh borhoods at night, may it be permis sible to take the Ritual Bath on the eighth dayor on any subsequent day. Rabbinic permission must be ob tained.

Friday Evening Immersion

Ifthe time for immersion occurs on a Friday evening (or on a holiday), her cleansing should be done in the afternoon before the lighting of the candles. The immersion should then be performed in the evening, im mediately after starlight.

This Friday night privilege is granted only to those whose regular and designated time of immersion occurs on Friday night. But if there was a postponement of the ap pointed time for immersion, then a Friday night visit to the Ritual Bath is not allowed.

Saturday or Holiday Night Immersion

If the Ritual Bath is to be taken on a Saturday night which is holiday, the cleansing should be done on Fri day before. The woman should fix her hair and take care during the in tervening day i.e., from the time of cleasing till the immersion to keep it tidy. She should be cautious that nothing should stick to her hands, from the articles of foods she may handle.

Before the Ritual Immersion she should repeat her cleansing without, however, violating the holiday. She should brush her teeth (without

toothpaste) and remove every parti cle offood from her teeth. She should examine her person in most every de tail carefully before her immersion.

8. The Immersion (Tevilah)

Place of Immersion

A rabbinically supervised Mikvah should be used. When a Mikvah is not available, and a natural body of water is to be used, rabbinic consul tation is essential. Many lakes and streams in vacation areas are not ac ceptable substitutes. Immersion in such bodies of waters does not re move the Niddah status.

The Correct Position

The woman should immerse her self in a crouching position hands and feet spread apart so that the water can reach every part of the body, i.e., the woman should stoop slightly in a natural position.

The whole body must be com pletely immersed under water. The hair must be loose.

The act of immersion should be carried out without fear. There should be deliberation, calm, andjoy in performing the Mitzvah.

Correct Supervision

A devout woman should supervise the immersion to see that it is com plete and that all the hair is covered by water. If such supervision is not available, it is advisable to wear an open mesh net over the hair as to as sure total immersion of the hair.

No one should hold or touch the woman during her immersion, ex cept in an emergency, and then only with a loose grasp.

9. The Blessing Upon Immersion

The Recital of the Blessing

When the Blessing is made, the woman should be in the Mikvah water up to her neck.

Translation of the Blessing

~‘Blessed art Thou, 0 Lord our God, King ofthe Universe, who hast sanctttled us by His Command ments and hast commanded us to observe the Ritual Immersion (Tevilah).”

Sanctification by Means of the Ritual Bath

Since the Mikvah Ritual is for Hol iness and in keeping with the lofty ideals of Tzneeuth, modesty and

sanctity, its time need not be re vealed to other persons. The time for relations should be with discreet conduct, and in strict secrecy and privacy, i.e., without any illumina tion, natural or artificial.

10. The Laws for a Bride

The Bride’s Preparation

A bride must also prepare herself after the cessation of her menstrual flow and count seven pure days be fore her wedding. If the menstrual flow ceases before the fifth day, she need not wait five days after the com mencement of her period, as in the ordinary case of a married woman.

As soon as the flow ceased, she makes her preliminary examination and on the following day counts her seven clean days.

The Arrangement of the Wedding Date

Every bride should realize the im portance of setting her date of mar riage so that she can visit the Mikvah within a few days ofthe ceremony. In case of inability of Teuilah prior to the wedding, then all separation laws of Niddah must be strictly observed until after Tevilah, Bride and groom must not be left completely alone, even during the daytime.

The bride should not hesitate to seek the advice about any Niddah problem from a competent rabbi. There should be no undue embar rassment, even as with her physi cian, since the pious rabbi is trained to advise in these matters with the highest standards of professional conduct and in accord with that sen sitivity to the modesty of the bride that is the distinctive characteristic of the Torah personality.

Since a full internal examination ofa virgin is usually not possible, the bride should examine herself most carefully and slowly, not to cause any injury by deep penetration. A surgi cal swab stick (inspected for small black spots which occasionally are found on absorbent cotton) should be used in addition to the digital examination. Penetration should be no deeper than a finger length.

The Postponement

If the wedding day should for any reason be postponed, the seven days of purification must be observed

anew, since these must be close to the day of the wedding.

The First Duty of the Bride

All women after puberty are Nid dah. Hence, a bride who does not ob serve the seven days of purification and does not adhere to Mikuah Ritual is considered as still being in that state. She does not approach her future happiness with the proper sanctity and cannot consummate her marital duties until she faithfully conforms with the Ritual precepts.

The Bride’s Daytime Immersion

A bride before her wedding day may immerse herselfduring the day time on the eighth or thereafter, pro vided, however, it is after her seven days of purity. This is an exception, not applicable after marriage.

The Groom’s Duty

After the first cohabitation, with a virgin bride, the bleeding, although due to rupture of the hymen, is to be considered as Niddah blood. All Nid dah rules separation must be ob served until Mikvah immersion can occur.

A Bride Begins to Follow All the Rules of Niddah

However, she counts only four complete days after the union, pro vided that the flow of blood has ceased within this period. This is then followed by the regular “sevenday period”, with all of its rules of examination, etc.

11. Laws ofPregnant andNursing Women and for Women after Childbirth Exemptions

Women whose pregnancy is as sured, after the third month or after three menstrual periods were skip ped, and likewise nursing women, need not anticipate their “periods.” The rules of“separation” do not apply to them because the flow has ceased.

After Childbirth

The same procedure of separation which applies in the case of the regu lar menstruant must be followed by a woman after childbirth (or unfortu nately, even a miscarriage).

However, she must first wait at least seven days after giving birth to a boy and fourteen days after bearing a gir. When she is certain that there is

no flow, she then counts her seven “clean” days. Usuallywomen stain as long as five weeks after childbirth.

After a miscarriage, when there is certainty that the flow of blood has ceased (a minimum of 14 days) she may begin to count her seven days.

12. Menopause

A woman who has reached her menopause and is about to remarry should consult a competent rabbi as to her ritual conduct.

A woman who reaches her menopause and has not been obser vant of the Niddah laws, still re mains in her state of Niddah; only after Mikvah can she cohabit with her husband. Hence, if she unfortu nately did not observe these laws be fore, she should carry out the de tailed rules as given on the previous pages. Nevertheless, she and her husband should consult a compe tent Rabbi for guidance.

13. Consultation of a Rabbi Expert Advice

In all cases of doubt, such as the unexpected appearance of stains after a medical examination, or if there is a discovery of blood by the groom, etc., a specially trained Rabbi should be immediately consulted. She should not rely upon her own views or the opinion of a lay person.

14. The Constant Performance of the Mitzvah

Every Jewish woman who menstruates is obligated to observe faithfully the laws of immersion. Even if for various medical reasons she cannot bear children, ther eis no allowance for ignoring the duties of Niddah-Teuilah. The Talmud (Shabbat 64b) declares, “A woman remains in her state ofNiddah until she immerses herself in water.” The Mikuah is a definite requirement for the attainment of the state of ritual purity by a Jewish woman.

One who is devoted and sincere in her Jewish faith will therefore never neglect the observance of this Mitzvah.

Because of the importance and complexity of these laws a woman should not rely on her own memory but should review and study this booklet often, to gain the full benefit ofJewish Family purity.

(Continuedfrom page 3) where the shmad-cults have drawn their nooses to suffocation about many young Jewish hearts. But thousands of our brother and sister Jews have been snatched from the jaws of death and been brought back to Jewish living, re scued because one or two or ten re fused to believe that there was no hope. They refused to offer their brethren in sacrifice to Moloch: they knew some thing had to be done and could be done, and did not spare themselves until they bore fruit. These few Quixotes fought, and showed they were made of the stuff of heroes. And others saw and followed to our side: they saw that the dream was not without hope and were won over. and soon the odds for suc cess were less and less one-sided. Young men who had been lured to the communes moved to Yeshivot; m’chal’eh Kodesh—desecrators of the Holy were captivated by Kedushah: the yeshiva K’tana the elementary Yeshiva—fed into the mesifta high school, into the Beth Medrash and from there into the kollel. Lubavitch, JEP (Jewish Education Program), NCSY (National Conference of Synagogue Youth) and others reaching out to the community. The phenomenon of Baaleh teshuva the return to the fold thanks to those who taught love and un derstanding.

We are surrounded by the odds mak ers: we have fallen prey to their mouth ings and become paralyzed.

Do-nothingness is not a Jewish char acteristic; helplessly and hopelessly waiting for the end of days or for the re solution of a problem through the in exorable passing of time is not a pre scription for action that a Jew can ac cept. Immobility and emotional wring ing of hands as we read the casualty statistics do not and cannot puff up our ego. Too many souls have been lost through lack of caring and inattention: through humble acceptance and trepi dation. Count those souls and recall that we are at least partially to blame.

Now count the souls that were re scued. Count the sacrifice made to set them free and measure the sacrifice in

the balance sheets of achievement. No more death camps and ovens; no more cattle cars of the holocaust; no more Jewish dogies rounded up for slaugh ter. No more the restiveness and sleep lessness of nights threatening disaster: the thought of holocaust and slaughter. A hill to climb, athicketto cut through, a ladder to the Heavens to ascend: a vista of Beauty, of a better world for every Jewish child today and tomorrow. For tified. Ready to negotiate each forward and upward step without fear or favor.

Resistance. The Jew knows he must gird himself for onslaught from any and every quarter. He must be strong enough to prove to the enemy that no son of Jacob can be attacked with im punity that every glow upon Jacob will be returned five- and ten-fold.

Resistance, or preparation for resis tance, is the first step. Count the bodies that are now alive because a stand was made: against Nazism, against Hel lenism, against the missions and the cults, and the other enemies who stand in the alleys of the world ready to pounce upon us. There must be strength and will to resist: our young, our men and women must be imbued with inner and outer strength, fortified with answers, inspirited with the dream and armed with the sophisticated weapons of the nineteen-eighties.

Our odds for success? Look at our tiny dot on the world map called Israel, so strong in heart and daring, standing up to the world, moving forward and up ward in spite of our enemies. In spite of enemies who claim to be friends. In spite of the UN.

The headlines scream the odds: one chance in thousands. Less than that. Should we be concerned? Ours is a his tory of defying the odds and coming out victorious. With the Almighty at our side, and we by the side of the Almighty, we are more than a match for the world.

Sit back afraid? There is no time for sitting back. We must make the world a better place: moral, peaceful, safe, poetic. Starting with the home and mak ing it a mikdash m’at. We need only to have the will to do it: the will to move for ward on the Pathways of the Almighty. We need onlyto rededicate ourselves to G-d’s purpose, in accordance with His Plan. A rededication of heart and dedi cation in deed today and tomorrow. A Chanukah of spirit and will.

Natural o i icial Flavors

A Kosher Shul in Manila

Most foods purchased at supermarkets or grocery 5tores contain natural or artificial flavors. These flavors are substances added to foods to impart a particular taste and distinctive quality and aroma for their greater en joyment. Flavor is created by aromatic substances which have been developed in living matter grown in nature. Though both natural and artificial flavors consist of many ingredients, the government requires that com panies list only artificial or natural flavors on the pack age. For instance the ingredients of a pineapple flavor may look like this:

Vanillin

Butyric acid

Ethyl pelargonate

Oil of orange

Ethyl cyclohexane propianate

Amyl acetate

Diethyl Sebacate

Citronellyl butyrate

Ethyl acetate

Ethyl butyrate

Amyl butyrate

This is a comparatively small list of ingredients used in a flavor. The ethyl pelargonate listed, is derived from ani mal fats. There are many other ingredients used in flavors that may be questionable.

In recent years natural and artificial meat flavors have become very popular in the food industry. Some ofthe in gredients are beef, chicken fat, lard and shortening made from tallow. Animal shortening must be melted before it can be used. The same applies to vegetable shortening. Very often the same melting pot is used for both animal and vegetable shortening. This makes it necessary to have a Mashgiach in the factory when the flavor house produces Kosher flavors using vegetable shortening for two reasons: first, to make sure they use Kosher Vegeta ble shortening, and second, to kosherize the melting pot.

These very same flavors are spray dried and used in powder form. Many flavors used in powder form serve as an ingredient in products that are sold in this form, for instance, jel desserts, sweet flavored powder to make soft drinks, etc. These flavors are originally produced in liq uid form; they are then spray dried and transformed into a powder. Flavor houses that produce both Kosher and non-Kosher products (which most do) must kosherize the spray drier before producing Kosher powder flavors. This is currently one of the most common problems in Kosher supervision.

A short time ago, I visited Manila again to inspect banana chip factories and desiccated coconut producers. A year ago I wrote about the potential problems involved in producing banana chips. Banana chips are cooked in oil, and the only oil available in quantity in the Philip pines is coconut oil. The problem is that many of the plants manufacture cheese rings, pork rinds, and other non-kosher products in the same oil. The companies we certify manufacture only banana chips. In addition to Starbruck, wenowcertityJ.F. Braun&Sons, Inc., Willim Food Products, Sunnyside Food Processor, and Globus Multi-Food Enterprise.

Most ofthe desiccated coconut that comes to the United States comes from the Philippines. The coconut com panies have very sophisticated equipment and they are very strict about the cleanliness of the plant. They are as modern as the most modern plant in the U.S.A. The only ingredient used is a chemical which keeps it white. The distributor for the coconut in the United States in J.F. Braun & Sons, Inc.

Our readers will be interested to know that Manila, the major city in the Philippines, has a Jewish population of about 100 Jewish families and has a synagogue where men andwomenhavebeenworshipping together. Through the tireless efforts of one man who, to our knowledge, is the only strictly observant Jew in Manila, they are now

building a beautiful new synagogue with a mechitza and are building a beautiful new Mikva. The name of this gentleman is Mr. Ezra Toeg. He and his wife are very hos pitable and all observant people who visit Manila are wel comed warmly. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Shlita, has en couraged him in his wonderful project and has sent him the following letter.

Many, many thanks for the good news that the con struction ofthe new Shul and Mikveh has been initiated. This provides the confident hope that it will proceed at full speed ahead, both in regard to the Shul with the Mechitza as well as the Mikveh (L’havdil), especially as in all such endeavors there is the assurance of Toras Emes that Hashem helps. How much more so in an endeavor that is for Zechus Horrabim. May G-d grant that it be completed even sooner than the most optimistic expecta tions, and that both are well attended and fully made use of.

The Zechus of the above will certainly stand each and everyone of the leaders and members of the community in good stead to be blessed with all good.

The Jewsof Kurdistan

Kurdistan is the Persian designa tion for the “Land of the Kurds.” The Kurds on their land are mentioned in both Sumerian and Assyrian docu ments, dating to 2000 B.C.E. Kur distan is also noted in the Bablyo nian Talmud (Baba Batra 9/a). Its territory spans the Zagros moun tains of Central Asia and their sur rounding prairies. The climate of the region includes heavy snow in the winter and hard rains in the spring which flood the wadis. The combina tion of harsh terrain and weather malces the area as difficult to pene trate as a natural fortress, and Kur distan has traditionally been a place of refuge for political and religious dissident groups.

Today Kurdistan is a geo-ethnic designation, used to delinate an area 960 km in length and approximately 215 km in width. The Kurds, num bering 7.6 million people, possess no political homeland. The Kurds repre sent a homogeneous ethnic group, related to the Iranians. Most are Mos lems, though not Arabs; their lan guage, Kurdish, of which various dialects are spoken, is of the Indo European group. In the past the Kurds were a rural-agricultural people, living in traditional tribal vil lages. Today their number in the cities and small villages is increas ing.

According to a tradition prevalent among the Jews of Kurdistan, and mentioned in accounts of travellers who visited Kurdistan over the cen turies, Kurdish Jews are the descen dants of the Israelite and Judean tribes exiled by the kings os Assyria, or as the Prophet Isaiah called them: which were ready to perish in the land ofAssyria” (27:13).

Despite its geographical proximity to the centres of Talmudic learning, Sura and Pumbedita, Kurdistan is hardly mentioned in the Talmud. The only Kurdish city noted, Irbil, is one of the most ancient cities in the

world. Undoubtedly the isolation of the mountainous areas of northern Kurdistan prevented any real com munication with centres in lower re gions. The harsh terrains, the diffi cult climate in winter and spring, and the ever-present danger of high way robbery also caused the virtual cutting off of one village from another, a situation which con tinued almost without change up until recent times.

The rural-agricultural way oflife of Kurdish Jews in Iraq, Iran, Russia and Turkey, probably accurately mirrors Jewish society in Talmudic times, as is evidenced, among other things, by their use of Aramaic dialects which are directlydescended from Talmudic Aramaic dialects (this tongue is also spoken by Kur dish Christians, while the Moslems speak Kurdish).

Many of the synagogues in Iraqi Kurdistan were named after prophets, such as Ezekiel and Elijah, and were considered to be very an cient.

Synagogues were built on the banks ofa river or stream to facilitate the fulfillment ofthe halachic injunc tion to have an adjoining mikve (ritual bath).

Summer services were held in a fenced-in courtyard which was sur rounded by a roofed balcony sup ported by wooden columns. The floor of the synagogue was a few steps lower than the courtyard ground, in keeping with the verse: “Out of the depths have I cried unto thee 0 Lord.”

The typical Iranian Kurdish village consisted of narrow unpaved streets bordered-on either side by homes and shops. Channels of water coiled through the streets, supplying the needs ofthe community. Homes, with large courtyards, were enclosed by large walls to ensure privacy. Heavy wooden doors with wooden locks sec ured the dwelling and faced unto the street. In the centre ofthe town stood the synagogue, which was also en compassed within a wall. There was no appreciable difference between Jewish and non-Jewish buildings. Construction was in the hands ofthe Moslems, who erecte~i a wooden framework of natural ~lements and

completed the house with adobe bricks.

The diet of Kurdish Jews was naturally regulated by the Jewish dietary laws. Ritual slaughter was available in the village only once a year. Families would dry meat and use it until the slaughterer’s next visit. Fresh meat and milk products were stored in separate clay barrels underground, a form of natural re frigeration. Fruit and vegetables were also dried for year-round con sumption.

A unique Kurdish food is kuba, round or flat cake made of a mixture of ground wheat or rice, with a drop of water and salt, and stuffed with fried meats. Sweet kuba, in which the meat is replaced by a mixture of dates, raisins, jam and other sweets, is also known.

Another popular dish is the yap rakh, grape leaf, cabbage or onion skin, stuffed with a mixture of rice, lemonjuice, and tomato sauce.

A special Shabbat dish, cooked from before sunset on Friday until Shabbat lunch, is called mabote, and is made from ground wheat, chick peas, meat, kuba, cow’s intes tines and stuffed chicken.

Everything needed in the home, including beds and sleeping acces sories, medication, baskets, clay pots, candles, tobacco, arak and per fume was made by the family.

The Kurdish Jewish community was virtually unique among Jewish communities of the world in having agriculture as a major source ofliveli hood. Many farming Jews were land owners. Most of the farming was done in the summer with the partici pation of the entire family. The lives tock included beasts ofburden, such as mules, bulls and buffalo, riding animals, including donkeys and horses and particularly flocks of sheep which, in the winter, pastured in the warmer, southern areas of the country.

Many Jews, especially in the town of Zakho, were engaged in wood trade and ferrying. The wood was cut in the mountainous pine forests and in poplar and willow forests grown especially for the purpose. The felled timberwas sent down the river, often on week-long voyages.

NON-DENOMINATIONAL VOLUNTARY PRAYER

A great Jewish theologian, the Baal Shem Toy, once said: “If G-d punishes man, he does not deprive him ofhis wealth or health but ofhis faith.”

Our nation faces critical times marked by turmoil and upheaval and wejust cannot punish ourselves, our children and posterity by removing ourselves from G-d. Furthermore, the young generation is desperately seeking direction •that will equip them with a sense of’security and therefore shouldsnot be restricted in the free expression of their faith in a Divine Creator. Long ago, Prophet Isaiah- proclaimed, “Verily, if ye have no faith’ye will not endure.” Isaiah 7.9. I believe that the present turbu lence signaisthat the time is here to permit G-d again in all the public places. ~- -

For in complex times such as these we need added substance, strength and fortitude bolstered by spiritual faith that will bring tranquility to a perplexed generation. The Preamble to the Constitution contains the fol lowing phrase: “We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish jus tice, insure domestiã tranquility. Hence, the responsibility rests upon us to insure domestic tranquility.

On the other hand, the prohibition against the offering of a voluntary non-denominational prayer at the beginning of each daily session in our public schools disturbs the tran quility of the children and of their parents and thus we fail in our re sponsibility to insure “domestic tranquility”. In fact, there are today too many angry, frustrated and perplexed youngsters who yearn for a sense ofdirection and are longing for

moral support. People in trouble and distress and tribulation long to in voke G-d’s help and guidance. The youth of today are inflicted with a de moralization process, they turn to dangerous drugs and cults in their search for relief from anxieties. Can we forget these youngsters by accept ing the prohibition of avowal of faith in public schools? It is a known fact that when President Kennedy was assassinated and the tragic news spread through the population. all were filled with anxiety for his survi val, children in many schools had the urge and the desire to offer some prayer for the life of the President, but teachers under the Supreme Court decision had no other alterna tive than to deny such devotional ex pressions. Does it not disturb the tranquility of the nation, if in a na tional emergency the people, and children in particular, cannot invoke the light and the presence ofG-d that provides tranquility and peace?

This episode should be sufficient to conclude that denial of the men tion of G-d in the public schools af fects the tranquility and welfare of our children and their parents.

I submit for your consideration that the Preamble of the Constitu tion is equally important and valid as the First Amendment.

Permit me now to turn to another aspect, namely, ‘freedom of choice’. Freedom cannot be defined without the element of free choice. We, as free people, recognize and respect the greatest inalienable gift given by the Creator to each human being, which is the gift of free will. By this gift, man is free even to disassociate him self, if he chooses, from his Creator. Therefore, no mortal man, or group of mortal men, should have the right

to attempt what an all-powerful Su preme Being refuses: that is, the forced combination of free will, free conscience, or free intellect. Man should be free to seek and praise and serve, or even to ignore, his Creator in his own way, so long as he does not interfere with the next person’s equal right. The Founding Fathers understood and gave attention to this concept when they provided that men as a group, through their gov ernment, should make no law re specting establishment of religion.

But ifour forefatherswere quick to express the principle ofseparation of Church and State in the Constitu tion, they were also quick to affirm that the powers of the Federal Gov ernment were delegated by the people. These same Founders had previously, in the Declaration of In dependence, held it to be self-evident that the people are endowed with a reserve ofcertain inalienable rights, which were bestowed upon them by a Supreme Being. In short, while the Founders were hesitant to impose upon man’s freedom of conscience any denominational religion, they were quick to acknowledge their own, and this country’s dependence upon a Supreme Being. Our Found ing Fathers did not purport to sepa rate G-d and State, but only the Church and State.

To some, the distinction may seem subtle, but the distinction is nevertheless there. It appears that our Founding Fathers were equally concerned when they wrote the De claration of Independence based on the biblical premise that all men are created equal not to infringe on the rights of any denomination. May I submit that if the Declaration of In dependence is valid, then a voluntary non-denominationalprayer isjust as valid and cannot be in conflict with the Constitution. Our Founding Fathers did not suggest in what form we should worship G-d but were con sistent in constantly acknowledging our dependency upon a Supreme Being. This was done through offi cial anthems, official emblems, offi cial slogan, official oaths, official de clarations and speeches, and official holidays. The Founders did this be cause they believed that the nation

which represents a Supreme Being receives a divine protection and bles sing. How right theywere has already been demonstrated. The conse quences that result from denying the existence of a Supreme Being are specifically stated in the Book of Deuteronomy 30.7: “And many evils and troubles shall come upon them; so that they will say in that day: Are not these evils come upon us because our G-d is not among us?” Thus, the path we must follow as a Nation, is a turn to our basic traditional concept of a firm reliance upon a Supreme Being and acknowledgement of our dependence on a Divine Creator.

As a survivor of Nazi and Com munist oppression I can bear wit ness to the curse that resulted from the denial of the existence of G-d. During the dark days ofWorld War II, I saw the horrors which ultimately led to the extermination of millions ofinnocent people, including women and children, a curse that never be fore appeared on the face of this earth. These atrocities, these cruel and barbaric acts were brought upon totalitarian states. Their leaders, Hi tler and Stalin, were overwhelmed by their power and might, who denied the existence of G-d and considered themselves so powerful that they were not accountable for their brutal deeds to a Supreme Being or to their people. They believed they can en slave and annihilate innocent people without accountability and punish ment.

This curse I saw unfolding with my own eyes and from my study and meditation I concluded that whenever we permit the removal of G-d from our midst, catastrophe upon catastrophies will befall us.

The President’s Commission on the Holocaust, of which I was privileged to be a member, in it’s re port to President Carter, dated Sep tember 27, 1979, states as follows: “The Holocaust could not have oc curred without the collapse of cer tain religious norms; increasing sec ularity fueled a devaluation of the image of the human being created in the likeness of G-d.” Today’s tragic events in Cambodia, marked by the starvation of innocent people, and similar events that occur behind the

Iron Curtain and in other parts ofthe world, all point to the fact that the World cannot be ruled without G-d.

It is for this reason that our Found ing Fathers, who were divinely in spired, constantly reaffirmed our re liance on a Supreme Being. this is evidenced when they devised the great document, the Declaration of Independence and stated: “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Thomas Jef ferson clearly indicated that liberty without G-d cannot be preserved, when he said: “G-d who gave us life gave us liberty.” George Washington said: “It is impossible to govern the world without G-d and the bible.” Wil liam Penn stated: “Our dependence on a divine Creator was time and time emphasized and re-emphasized by the national leaders of our time.”

On March 4, 1933, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said: “In this dedication of a nation we hum bly ask the blessing of G-d. May he protect each and every one ofus. May He guide me in the days to come.”

President Eisenhower, in one his messages as reported in the New York Times on November 4, 1952, re ferred to a wise philosopher who came to this country many years ago seeking the answer to the question wherein lies the greatness and genius of America. He sought it in her wealth, in her fertile fields and boundless forests, commodious har bors, rich mines and in her democra tic Congress and matchless Con stitution. But it was not there. “Not,” said the wise philosopher, “until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness, did I understand the secret of her genius and power.”

President John F. Kennedy on January 20, 1961 said: “The world is very different now And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forbears fought are still at issue around the globe the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the State, but from the hand of G-d.”

The challenge of our present time

was echoed by Governor Ronald Reagan when he said: “Where were we when G-d was expelled from the classroom?” (U.S. News and World Report of October 27, 1979).

This is a challenge that we must face; this is a challenge that de mands action because the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court gave rise to an alien perception that we are a State separated from G-d. This per ception, ifpermitted to continue, will destroy or great spiritual heritage from which we always nurtured our strength.

In conclusion, I wish to turn briefly to some of the arguments advanced by those opposing a voluntary nondenominational prayer. Some say that a voluntary non-denomina tional prayer is worthless and waters down the meaning of religious ex perience. Ifthis is so, then there is no basis for their opposition. Ifthe nondenominational prayer has no religi ous connotation, what justification has the opposition to oppose prayer if it is meaningless? The other reason which is so frequently ad vanced is that we do not want to cause any embarrassment to those children who do not wish tojoin a de votional expression. Myanswer in re gard to this point is that the great ness of America is in diversity. It be came a strong, mighty, wealthy na tion because it permitted the right to differ and to be different. I believe that one of the greatest educational tools is lost when we do not tell our children that those who desire to pray to Almighty G-d may do so, and those who do not believe in prayer may abstain. This concept is the cor nerstone and pillar of our American way oflife, namely, the right to differ and to be different. This right is basic in any free society and let us continue to live with it.

Permit me now to conclude my tes timony with the words ofthe Prophet Isaiah: “And when all Thy children shall know the Lord; great shall be the peace of Thy children. Isaiah 54:13.

Let us dedicate ourselves to hasten the era of peace by letting our chil dren know G-d.
