Before sitting down for a bite in the dining room of a social acquaintance, we should like to recommend that you give the invitation a second thought. Even if she is a close friend and if the meal she is offering is home cooked.

The kashrus of many of the homes whose mothers-in-Israel claim to be “strictly strictly” may be suspect. Pedigree, we fear, is no guarantee of observance, and many a modern “rebbetzin” has been displaying kash rus credentials which are tainted, to say the least. The greater part of wis dom or valor, then, may be to adopt a policy of taking your bite only in the most select of homes.

Among our “modern orthodox” and especially on the road—although New York City is not exempt by any means —there has been widespread adop tion of two-tier observance of kash rus. There has developed the InsideOutside Jew: “We eat out (i.e. trefa) in restaurants and at our friends’, but we buy kosher. Our kitchen is kosher. After all, Grandpa studied to be a Rabbi!” A varied and nigh-limitless list of explanations and justifications for eating out are offered: social pres sures, enlightenment, economics. They are offered with due contrition for having succumbed to the pressures which forced them to taste of forbid den foods outside; some even wince at the mere mention of their ordeal of having to wolf down a six course assortment of tarfus.

Two worlds: treif outside, kosher in side. Scrupulous adherence inside.

That it is treif outside we know, but how scrupulous is the adherence in side?

Examine the cupboards of the In side-Outside Jew. Many are the “acci

dents” on the kitchen shelves. Products which bear no symbol of certification whatsoever or which are out-and-out treif mingle freely with those which have been O.K.’d. Explanations: “A & P didn’t carry the brand we usual ly use,” they cram the offending pack age into a shameless corner. Or, “We checked the ingredients and it seemed all right.” Or, “This? This we keep on hand especially for the boss. We don’t eat it. But Tim Kelly likes to join us on Friday night. It’s his favor ite and he’s so nice. It’s the least we can do. The job, you know.” Somewhere, too, there must be a special duplicate set of dishes and pots that are identical to those used to serve the family but are different and always separate for the Kellys and other VIPs!

All manner of excuses in extenu ating circumstances. But it is obvious that a person who compromises with kashrus for social reasons will have no difficulty in finding ample reason for swallowing a morsel of Safeway or Food Fair liverwurst at home or sea soning the evening specialty with an un-Jewish taam. Mother will no doubt, on occasion, invite Brother and Sistie to come meet Daddy in town for a fun afternoon or evening complete with fancy (i.e. non-kosher) restaurant and theatre, no holds barred. Or let them have lunch with Johnnie Kelly. “Remember,” she will remind them at supper when they tell her that the Kelly maid’s bacon wasn’t bad at all and couldn’t they have some for lunch, “here at home we eat only kosher!”

With a second set of teeth and new stomach lining?

Problem one.

Now let’s talk about our own nec

plus ultra circle and not wander too far from our traditional four cubits. Let us go next door. Are we certain that our Yiddishe tochter neighbor is kashrus-pure? How many of our neighbors’ kitchens can we vouch for?

We have found among many of our young—and not so young—home makers a sad lack of information re garding kashrus. And we ask the question: Does the fact that the mas ter of the household is a Torah Jew automatically make his kitchen ko sher? How many Torah Jews have taken an interest in the cupboard? They rely implicitly in their balle boste: she knows what she may buy and what she may serve him. He has faith in her and does not question her preeminence in this area. (“Ich mish zich nit.”) His function is to see that the proper brocho is made!

Would that there were no room for doubt and fear. Our girls learn from their mothers, baking, cooking. How much and what they have learned we can not say, but we are certain that they have learned every thing there is to know. Their mothers, our wives, got their instruction from Grandma, and who can deny that the older generation were indeed care ful unto the very minutiae! But they got their training, at best, in days of very limited commodities and in gredients: homeground spices, milk from a cow in the backyard, no vita mins, no extracts, no additives, no gelatin, no polysyllabic chemicals. Life around the stove was simple and warm. Grandma knew how to kosher meat and open a chicken; she knew, when something did not look or smell right, that she had to take chicken

A College Education ForA Yeshiva Boy?

A Response of THE LUBAVITCHER REBBE

I am in receipt of your letter in which you ask my opinion about the advisability for graduates of a Ye shiva to continue their sacred studies in conjunction with college attend ance.

By way of preface, let me state at once that my views on the subject under question apply not only to students of Yeshivoth, but to all Jewish youth, since all are children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the souls of all were present at Sinai and received the Torah and Mitz voth. This is, indeed, the basis of my view which will be outlined below, after some introductory observa tions.

Jews have always been “a minor ity among the nations”, even in the best of times. At the same time “their laws differ from those of any other people”, and they differ not only in regard to special occasions, or special aspects of life, such as Yom Kippur, but they differ in their Shabbos, or Rosh Hashana and way of life, and in every aspect of the daily life. For the Jew the Torah and Mitzvoth are the guide of daily happiness, and this is the simple life and the source of life and true meaning of “Toras Chayyim”—Law of Life, and the definition of the Mitzvoth as the essence of Jewish life, “whereby Jews live”.

It is clear that being in the minor ity, Jews must have special rein-

forcements from childhood on, in order to be able to hold their own in the face of overwhelming odds.

If it was difficult enough to live as a Jew in countries where Jews were persecuted or confined to ghettos, there was one redeeming factor at least, namely that under those cir cumstances Jewish adherence and loyalty to the Torah and Mitzvoth was not put to the test. An individ ual Jew could sever his ties with his people, but that involved a sudden and complete break; it was therefore rare and extreme. But in the free countries, and under the present economic and social conditions, there are no outside barriers separat ing Jew from gentile; the road to assimilation is wide open, and the danger is all the greater since the process is a gradual one. No sudden break with tradition is entailed, but a gradual deviation, step after small step, leads in that direction. There is a well-known parable for this, about the boy who strayed from the road and later found himself in the midst of the woods. He got there by mak ing a small false step off the road, which led to another, and yet an other.

The conditions and environment in a country such as this call, there fore, for an even greater spiritual reinforcement of the Jewish boy and girl than ever before and elsewhere. This reinforcement must be of such

strength and duration that the Jew ish child will always be conscious of the fact that no matter what the environment is, he is the bearer of the sacred tradition of the Divine Torah and Mitzvoth and belongs to a people that is holy and different. For this, it is essential that right from the earliest childhood to ado lescence the Jewish child should re ceive the fullest possible Jewish edu cation, throughout his formative years.

Hence, when a Jewish boy com pletes his compulsory education, it is an absolute must that for a couple of years, at least, he should dedicate himself to the exclusive study of the Torah and sacred subjects, in a most conducive atmosphere of a Yeshi vah, without distraction of secular studies, all the more so as the teen age years are crucial and formative and of lasting effect, in the crystali zation of the character.

This would have been my opinion even if college entailed no more than the distraction of secular stu dies. Actually there is much more involved. Theoretically a college and its faculty should not try to impose any particular views, much less a way of life, on the students. Actual ly however, the student cannot help being impressed, on the conscious and subconscious level, by the views, outlook and way of life of his pro fessors. These, as well as the whole atmosphere of a college, are unfor tunately, not compatible with the Jewish way of life, and frequently if not always quite contradictory to it. This is so even in colleges which are theological, or having so-called religious studies. Needless to say, the whole atmosphere of college is in violent conflict with the Shuichan Aruch way of life, whereby the Jew is totally committed—in every detail and aspect of his personal daily life —to the Torah and Mitzvoth and the service of G-d, as is written “You shall know Him in all your

ways,” to which a whole chapter in Shuichan Aruch, Orach Chaim (Ch. 231) is devoted: note there.

In other words, the Jewish boy (or girl) entering college, yet desir ing to retain the Jewish way of life in accordance with the Torah, finds himself tossed about in the raging waves of conifict between two con tradictory worlds. He is at a further disadvantage in finding himself in the minority camp, since those shar ing his views and convictions are few on the college campus, while the forces pulling in the opposite direc tion are overwhelming; forces he must confront at every turn— among the student body, faculty members, text books, newspapers and periodicals. It is very doubtful whether even an adult and mature person who is subjected to such “shock treatment” day after day, would not be shaken; how much more so a teenager.

Needless to say, I am aware of the argument that many Yeshivah boys attending college, or even col lege graduates, remain loyal to the Torah and Mitzvoth. The answer is simple. The number of such students and graduates who have not been seriously affected is relatively very small indeed, much smaller than imagined. They are so exceptional that the wonder of it attracts atten tion, since those who go astray un der college influence are taken for granted, while the one that still puts on Tefillin calls forth amazement. One may use the analogy of the shoe-shine boy who became a mil lionaire and everyone talks about him. It is not because he was a shoe shine boy that he attained success, and no one will suggest that in order to become a millionaire one should start in the shoe-shine business. The greater the exception and sensation, the greater is the proof of the rule.

Some people ask, is there really such a conflict between attending college and remaining an observant

Jew. I can speak from experience and personal knowledge, having at tended various colleges and seen the painful inner upheavals of Jewish students, and having for many years been the confidant of Jewish stu dents who are otherwise reluctant or ashamed to open their hearts. I can therefore state with the fullest meas ure of conviction and responsibility that he who sends his child to col lege during the formative years sub jects him to shock and profound conflicts and trials and invites quite unforeseen consequences.

In view of all the above, it is my definite and considered opinion that all Jewish children, upon complet ing their compulsory secular educa tion, should devote at least several years to the exclusive study of the Torah, without the interference of other studies, not even training for a trade, in order to obtain the maxi mum insurance against all risks and dangers that their future life may hold, when they attain adulthood and settle down to a family life.

To put the matter in bolder relief, by way of illustration. Take the gen eral attitude to polio, G-d forbid, and the precaution taken against it. Fortunately, the incidence of polio is not widespread, and where it strikes, it cripples only a part of the physical body; yet though the odds are far-fetched, it would be reckless not to take the necessary precaution. Unfortunately, the victims of college education are numerous indeed and most widespread, by far in the ma jority, and the harm is even more far-reaching.

Another point which is often the subject of misconception—the im portance attached to a college de gree from the economic point of view. Statistics show that the ma jority of college graduates eventually establish themselves in occupations and business not directly connected with their courses of study in col lege. The moral is obvious.

to the Roy to ask a “shyla”. Kitchens are different today. Now there is frozen meat and eviscerated chicken. No one has “shylos” to ask because all problems are handled—we hope— at the source by the resident mashgi ach, but there are countless new questions that arise in our chemical age when maids do the cooking and feed the baby; when broiling liver atop a burner creates a cleaning mess; when there are electric ovens and dishwashers for milchig and fleishig; and there are refrigerators that must be opened on Shabbos. Add and keep adding the changes tech nocracy has wrought. Do our wives know all the answers? Do our daugh ters know many of them? Who has taught them?

Yet husbands our close friends even are living in a paradise which takes for granted that their wives are completely versed in the science of kashrus. And let us not deny it: Kashrus is a science and it is an art.

So, if the kitchens of our observant elite can not be taken for granted, how much less so the dining rooms of our “modern orthodox”?

There is room, and there is need, in our seminaries for girls for a thor ough course in Keeping Kosher. A course which covers not only the con tents of foods—which may or may not be eaten—but one which details the numberless regulations which are in the purview of the Jewish homemaker, Shabbos, Yom Toy and every day.

In this age of time-saving devices and packaged foods, we know that husbands are still more than ever overwhelmed and pressed for time to find their livelihood. They may not have enough time to go on kitchen inspection tours. Perhaps they should make the time.

Priorities are in the soul. But we feel that it is of extreme importance that we teach kashrus to our wives and daughters so their daughters and sons will be Jews inside and out side the home and inside and out side the heart forever and ever.

Rambam (Maimonides) consider ed that demons were old wives’ tales (Mishnah Commentary, Avoda Za ra, chapte 4), while the Gaon of Vilna, 60) years later, forcefully maintained their reality, though conceding that they have an “inner meaning” (Biur Hagra, Yore Dea, 179, 13).

Are we now, in this post-modern ge, in a position to effect a recon ciliation, and also to suggest what that “inner meaning” might be?

PSYCHIC PHENOMENA

Psychosomatic medicine has taught us that mental events can have very noticeable physical effects. Psychic phenomena are today under investi gation in many parts of the world, including Soviet Russia. “Polter geist” experiences, in which noises are heard, disturbances occur, arti

des explode and objects are thrown about without apparent cause, have been fully documented in many dif ferent places over a period of more than four centuries. A careful com parison of these accounts reveals an interesting fact, not always ap parent to the authors themselves: the disturbances are invariably asso ciated with a boy or girl near the age of puberty. No convincing ex planation has ever been offered for these phenomena.

It is increasingly clear that the effects attributed in the past to demons must have been due to what we now refer to as subconscious and psychic forces. It has even been suggested that shayd, the Hebrew word for “demon” (Aramaic: shid da) is derived from the Aramaic verb shaddey, to throw, and is con nected with poltergeist phenomena.

MORAL SPHERE

In the Talmud these forces are often called mazzikin, or “harmful influences”. Those particularly vu! nerable to their attacks are stated to be persons alone at night, and in isolated places such as ruins or deserts (Berachot 3b). The precise nature of the harm they inflict is not stated, but it would seem to be mental rather than pIiy~ical. In Rosh Hashana (28b) “demonic compulsion” is equated with insani ty. The fact that they are thought of as the forces of Samael, or Satan (Zohar III, 282) would seem to in dicate that their origin is to be sought in the moral sphere, for “Sa tan” is another name for yetzer ha ra, the evil side of man’s nature (Bava Batra 1 6b). Their effects may be counteracted by reciting the Shema or occupying oneself with

thoughts of Torah immediately be fore going to sleep (Berachot 5a), so that the subconscious is pervaded by the stabilizing influence of holi ness.

Could this perhaps be the ex planation of the Vilna Gaon’s refer ence to an “inner meaning” of these phenomena? Perhaps the Gaon is hinting that their source must be sought in the inner world of the mind. Since they originate in regions of the mind beyond ego-experience, they are conceived as due to “other beings” or “outside” factors. And in a sense, of course, this is true. Not in the naive sense, ridiculed by Rambam, of separate entities possessing quasi-physical bodies, but in the deeper sense that any nonego mental activity is, in a psycho logical context, “other” to and “out side” the ego.

In the light of this insight it may be possible to understand many of the Talmudic statements in this area.

FINGER-TIPS

For example, we are told (Shab bat 109a) that after getting up from our sleep we have to wash our hands in a special manner, to remove the ruah ra’ah (evil spirit) which rests on the fingers after sleep. The Zohar explains that deep sleep induces a state akin to death. Awakening re moves the resultant impurity from the whole body except the finger tips, from which it departs only by washing in the prescribed manner.

It should not be difficult to un derstand this on the lines suggested. Sleep means a relinquishing of con scious control. The forces of the subconscious take over. This results inevitably in a certain degree of disorderliness and disorientation. We all know how the mind goes through various stages of semiawareness on awakening. First we become aware of our immediate surroundings; then we may have a vague feeling that something, pleas-

ant or unpleasant, is due to happen that day: then full awareness comes flooding in. The mind has progress ed through three worlds: the senses, the emotions, and the intellect. The mind’s control over most bodily ac tivities is soon restored, but those most sensitive instruments of fine touch and delicate action, the fin gers, still remain affected, and their holiness-potential is thus diminished. The situation is restored, so our tradition tells us, only by a symbolic act of washing. The hands must be washed three times, alternately; the washing thus forming an orderly pattern. This re-imposes the orderli ness of conscious control, and with it the full holiness-potential is re stored.

SYMBOLS

The present writer believes that it is possible to understand many of the other recorded statements on the subject of shaydim in a similar man ner. As an example of a passage which lends itself to symbolic in terpretation we will cite the discus sion in Berachot (6a). There are four sections, which we will deal with consecutively.

A. We learnt in a Beraitha: Abba Binyamin said, If permission were given to the eye to see, no-one would be able to stand, because the the mazzikin. Abaye said: They are more numerous than we, and they surround us like the ridge of earth which surrounds the tree-bed.

Ray Huna said: Each one of us has a thousand at his left and ten thousand at his right; as it says, “A thousand shall fall at your side, etc.”

The meaning would seem to be that the unconscious forces which beset every ego are extremelynumer ous. If “the eyes were to see them,” i.e. if the unconscious were to be made conscious, it is very doubtful whether the ego could maintain it self intact against their shattering impact. Abaye’s simile of the “ridge of earth surrounding the tree-bed”

seems incongruous in this context. The ridge of earth plays an impor tant beneficial role; it helps to retain the water which ensures the life of the growing plant. Yet he uses it to symbolize the harmful forces of the psyche. It may be that an important truth is being taught here. These subconscious forces did not get there by accident. Like all manifestations of the Satan—the evil side of man’s nature—they are implanted by the Creator for a purpose. In the heal thy individual the subconscious in fluences may well serve to create tension for the ego and ensure its alertness and readiness to combat the evil stimuli that emerge into consciousness.

The mention of “a thousand” and “ten thousand” alludes to Psalm 91,7: “A thousand shall fail at your side and ten thousand at your right hand but (destruction) shall not approach you.” If we follow the allusion through, the meaning seems to be that in spite of the dangers that lurk around him, G-d will not allow His servant to fall.

MENTAL STATES

Now follows a section in which certain nuisances or inconveniences are attributed to “their” influence.

B. Rava said: The pressure which occurs in the assembly is due to them. Weakness in the knees is due to them. Torah students’ clothes wear out because of them. Legs knock together because of them.

There is one simple and compar atively trivial manifestation of the subconscious forces, and that is the phenomenon known as “Fidgeting.” People such as Torah students, who sit aNd study a great deal, are par ticularly prone to this. This would seem to he the central reference point for all the four occurrences enumerated here, if these are to be taken literally. It may well be, how ever, that they are metaphorical ref erences to mental states; so that “pressure at the assembly” may de

note mental tension; “knees”—sta bility; “clothes” character; and “knocking legs” faltering spiri tual progress.

C. Anyone who wants to become aware of their presence should take fine ash and place it round his bed. In the morning he will see something like the footprints of a cock.

The symbolism here is reasonably straightforward. The “fine ash” is the ability to subject one’s own men tal states to a sensitive appraisal. The bed refers to dreams. The cock is a sexual symbol. The meaning seems to be that the simplest way to become aware of subconscious factors is to analyze one’s dreams, when underlying sexual motivations and associations will become appar ent to the sensitive observer.

DANGEROUS ENTERPRISE

In the following final extract the symbolism is more intricate.

D. Anyone who wishes to see them should take the afterbirth of a black cat which is also the daugh ter of a black cat, a firstborn which is also the daughter of a firstborn; burn it (the afterbirth), grind it to powder, and put some in his eye; he will then see them. He should keep it (the powder) in an iron tube and seal it with an iron seal, lest they steal it from him. He should seal its mouth to avoid harm. Ray Bevai son of Abaye did this, saw them, and was harmed. The Rabbis prayed for him and he re covered.

“To see them,” as we mentioned above, means to become fully aware of one’s hidden motivations; to make the unconscious fully con scious. The Talmud warns that this is a difficult and dangerous enter prise. Even Ray Bevai, the son of Abaye, who we know from else where (Hagiga 4b) to have been on familiar terms with the Angel of Death, did not escape unharmed.

A sharp and cruel eye is needed to discern the hidden motives un

derlying one’s thoughts and actions. The danger is twofold. Too much knowledge of this sort can affect one’s mental stability. Also one is prone to apply to other people the insights gained by observing one self, often with disastrous results to human relationships.

The cat is a symbol of cruelty. (It is the only animal, besides man, that kills for pleasure.) Black is a symbol of evil. (It absorbs light without reflecting any; typical of “taking” without “giving”.) Black born of black, firstborn of firstborn, represents the quintessence of the quality. The afterbirth symbolizes productive capacity. Grinding into

powder represents the fine sensitivity required to probe the world of the subconscious.

The probing capacity must be kept under strict control “lest they steal it”; that is, lest the forces of evil make use of the cruel clarity it requires to destroy one’s humani ty. There is also the danger that “he may be harmed”; i.e. that one’s own mental stability might be affected.

It is not suggested that the few insights offered here exhaust the subject of psychic and subconscious influences as discussed in the Tal mud. It is hoped, however, that they may open the door to further research in this fascinating subject.

The Problems of Marri6ge

It is a striking thought that since the beginnings of human history every generation of parents has been concerned with the upbringing of children, and yet, despite that accu mulated experience, the same prob lem continues to confront all parents —that of how best to rear and to educate their children.

Such also is the case with mar riage: although it is an institution of the greatest antiquity, it yet pre sents a problem in our own day to the individuals who embark upon it and to corporate society which has so much at stake in the stability of its foundations.

“The problems of marriage” is a phrase used with considerable—and growing—frequency on all sides at the present time, in our own com munity and beyond. The growing disregard of the sanctity of the mar riage undertakings, the personal dif ficulties of individual husbands and wives, the social and sociological obstacles to their happiness, the pitfalls that many couples fail to surmount, the increasing resort to divorce in our own day as witnessed by statistics which do not lie—these and a host of other factors have brought the phrase to the fore. Nor is the dissension between husband and wife confined to them and their

generation; it affects also the out look and happiness of their children, with consequences that are but too evident on all sides.

Why is there a marriage problem? If this question can be answered at its deepest level and in its innermost significance, we shall have gone far towards clarifying one of the most disturbing tendencies of our day— tegral part of himself, and at the same time a person other than him self. “And they shall be one flesh” is literally true in the ideal marriage, we shall have identified the basic cause, and the remedy may then be the more easily prescribed.

Fundamentally the cause is one of the upbringing, or rather of the con ditioning, of the individual. Each man—and each woman—is reared in the realisation of a duty he owes to himself and of a duty he owes to his neighbor. In all life’s relation ships he sees clearly two parties— himself and others—and their mu tual bearings on each other. He fails to see, because his upbringing and training have not taught him to see, that there is one unique person who is at once something of both parties: his matrimonial partner is an infor husband and wife become one— their aspirations, their outlooks, their difficulties, and their joys, are not merely shared, they become

identical; in that sense and to that extent, a man’s wife should become as much a part of his own being as one of his own limbs or one of his own thoughts. Yet she ~retains her own personality and individuality; she can be seen by him objectively as someone outside himself, as well as subjectively as someone within himself; in that sense and to that extent, she is as much a part of his environment as is any neighbor or fellow being.

This dual character of man’s part ner in marriage is expressed in the dictum of the Rabbis: “he feels towards his wife as he feels towards his own person; he honors her more than he honors his own self,” for she is at once and at the same time an essential part of himself and someone other than himself, claim ing in those two capacities his de votion and his respect.

The failure to perceive this re lationship to his partner is at the root of man’s marriage problem— in proportion as that relationship is recognized by the two partners, marriage is stable, with abiding unity of purpose and happiness for them both; in the measure in which each sees the other as simply a “second party” outside of himself, marriage endows the participants with a basic problem from which all the other ills.of their union must spring.

This problem is not confined to any one generation: it is as old as the marriage institution itself, and must remain until its basic cause has been removed, which can be achieved only by the recognition of this relationship by husband and wife, and by their concern to live by its implications.

But the problem has been aggra vated and magnified in our time and has assumed grave proportions be cause of the readiness with which increasing numbers seek the reme dies to every difference—however

trivial—in divorce proceedings.

It is one of the most extraordinary social phenomena of our time that the institution of divorce, provided for in the Torah to safeguard mar riage, has in our day come to be one of marriage’s greatest dangers. For the Torah makes provision for divorce with proper regard for those cases of married couples who find it beyond their powers to live in amity together. Rather than that both should go through life in un endurable misery, let each be re leased from the other, and thus be enabled to effect a new union with the possibilities of happiness ahead rather than remain bound to the other and to the unavoidable un happiness which that must entail. Such is the Torah’s intention in leg islating for divorce, and such in practice was the attitude taken to it in bygone days. Thus husband and wife in the past sought divorce only as a last resort, and every effort at peace-making between them, at adjusting their grievances, reconcil ing their differences, and restoring trust and reciprocal affection, was made by the Rabbi before the di vorce arrangements began. It was only when these efforts failed that the Rabbi, recognising the difficul ties to be insuperable and realising that divorce was preferable to a perpetuation of such unhappiness, allowed the divorce to proceed. Thus the numbers who divorced were small and the Torah’s purpose was attained in large measure.

Today, however, this has changed. The traditional attitude has been subordinated to the “modern” out look. Any difference between hus band and wife over the most petty matter is all too often seen by the parties to warrant divorce; there is no pause for compromise, no attempt at reconciliation, no scope for peace-making. Goodwill, perse verance and adaptability, are set aside and the Torah’s purposes nul

lified—purposes which created di vorce as an emergency measure to protect marriage, are by tragic irony converted into one of the most menacing factors in the stability of modern marriage.

It is a commonplace that no two individuals have identical tastes, identical outlooks, or identical habits. Two people living together, can therefore, with all the intimacy which prevails between husband and wife, easily bring to the surface the differences of taste, outlook, or habit that divide them—and all too often husband and wife do bring such differences to the surface, with di sastrous results to their own happi ness and to that of those about them—even though their differences be concerned with trivialities of no apparent consequence. Misunder standing, bitterness and hostility set in where gladness and mutual un derstanding should prevail; tears are reaped where joy should be gar nered.

One thing can avail, however, to remove all differences common ideals shared by both. When two partners have identity of view on spiritual values, when they are ani mated by a common faith, when, in other words, they have identity of ideals, all other differences are seen in their proper perspective as being concerned with mundane, trivial or transient things, and therefore as being of lesser importance. There can be no deep-seated dissensions, no quarrels, or embitterment, be tween a husband and wife who share each other’s ideals—for all else is subsidiary to the spiritual values which each has accepted as the ar biters in life’s decisions.

In all the circumstances, oppor tunities and obligations of married life, it is the sharing of ideals and the pooling of spiritual resources that command the abiding loyalty of both partners and that guarantee their enduring happiness. Material

things and mundane problems, too, are shared in full measure, but these must be secondary and subservient to, even built upon, the spiritual foundation on which Jewish mar riage rests.

Judaism provides and prescribes for this in its own unique and hal lowed way; the laws of purity and chastity of Jewish family life im plant into the hearts and minds of those who uphold them the recog nition of this truth—the physical and material aspects of marriage have their due place, but its spiritual claims must first be heeded. The Creator in His Divine Law lays down the gracious precepts of chas tity in Jewish family life in order to hallow the union and to ensure for posterity purity as well as health; and in order that the soul, conceived in the holiness of wedlock, shall at the moment of conception and at its emergence into the fullness of life be endowed with that purity which will be the guarantor of its hallowed character throughout its years on earth. When these spiritual claims have been met, the physical expres sion of marriage that many then follow is sanctified, and marriage itself becomes a great spiritual force to strengthen the bonds of mutual devotion and loyalty, and to ilumi me the united life of husband and wife with the radiant light of a har monious faith.

The ideals of modesty and mo rality which are inherent in our atti tude to marriage, are compulsive laws in Jewish matrimony. Without them, marriage is little more than the union of two individuals who love each other to outward appear ance only, but who are divided and even may fear each other in the depths of their hearts; but with these ideals, marriage becomes the sublime fusion of two souls wedded to a common purpose and dedicated to a common objective.

DEAR YISROEL WhatAboutLoving G-d?

DEAR YISROEL,

Every letter I receive from you makes me happier and proves to me how right we were to start this ex change of letters. Your questions show that you don’t just read their contents, but that you give them your serious thought. The question you ask me in your last letter is no less important and no less thought ful than the previous ones. You ask: We spoke about doing the mitzvohs, obeying G-d’s commandments, be cause we love Him. We say so twice each day: “And you should love your G-d with all your heart (de sires) with all your soul (mind) and with all your wealth (power) (De vorim). And here comes your ques tion, How can I make myself love G-d? Love is not like eating matzohs on Pesach or putting on Tefiuin These are physical acts which can be commanded, but love is some thing which comes from within. You cannot love someone if you don’t really feel that you love him. There fore, how can you command feel ings? Or can you?

A very thoughtful question in deed, Yisroel, a question about which a lot has already been written by some of our great Rabbis of all generations. Before we cite some of their answers, however, let me ask you a question of my own. It is taken for granted and is a natural thing that children love their par ents. Because children realize—or should realize—that their parents

are the source of their existence, they raised them and cared for them, provided them with all their needs, guided them with their education, in short, have done everything human ly possible for their well-being. It is therefore natural that children love their parents. Why then should it not be considered a natural thing to love the Almighty who created everything and is the source of eve rything and everyone in existence, parents and children alike? The question should really be reversed: Why is there the necessity to com mand love of G-d when it is only natural and self-evident that we should love Him?

To answer this question I cite to you the words of the “Sefath Emes,” written by one of the great est and holiest Rabbis of the 19th century, the Rabbi of Ger, Poland. He says: “It should be clear to us beyond doubt, that never will G-d ask us to do something without giv ing us the means to do that thing (by means we understand both phy sical and mental). Never will G-d ask of us human beings to do things which are unattainable. And so, all the 613 commandments automatic ally mean that we not only have to obey them, but that we also have the ability to obey them. It therefore is never sufficient to give inability as an excuse for not doing a mitz voh, for such an excuse means that the person pleading it did not really

look to find in himself the ability which G-d gave him for carrying out that mitzvoh. Therefore, the mitzvoh of loving G-d, like all other mitzvohs, tells us that we should only be true to our nature, namely that we possess the abilities to love G-d just as a child has it in his nature to love his parents. These are the words of the “Sefath Emes,” and they correspond to what was already said before.

You will now want to know, I’m sure, how deep this love should be and whether I can give you a few hints how to search within you this ability of carrying out this all-im portant mitzvoh. I shall be glad, of course, to help you. Let us see what our Rabbis have to say on this sub ject. Let us open the “Mishnah To rah” of the Rambam and learn his words.

He says: It is a mitzvoh to love this Great and Holy G-d, as the Torah says: You should love your G-d.

How do we come to love Him? When a person delves into the won ders and into the greatness of His creations, he sees from them His wisdom which has no end. Soon he loves and praises and glorifies Him. As King David says: My soul is longing to know the Almighty living G-d. And delving into His creatures soon makes a person real ize that he is but a pitifully small thing, standing with a very small mind, in front of his Creator.

How is the right way to love G-d; to love Him a strong and boundless love, until his mind is pre-occupied with it always, never ceasing to think of G-d, as He directed us: And you should love your G-d with all your heart and soul.

Yisroel dear, I’m sure you will agree with me, that when we read these words, it will give us a glimpse of the depth of the Rambam’s love of G-d. I hasten to add, that you should not say now, how can I be asked to love G-d the way King

David loved Him, or the way the Rambam loved Him? You should never ask such a question either in regard to this or any other mitzvoh. What is required of you, is to try to do your best, and be true to your nature, and seek out the ability G-d gave you to obey Him.

Let us learn further, Yisroel dear. We will now open the “Seferi Ha chinuch” (written by Rabbi Aharon Halevi of Barcelona, one of the most extensive and one of the first commentaries on the 613 Mitz vohs). Let us turn to Mitzvoh 418, the Mitzvoh to love G-d. Among other things, he states there that the surest way that leads to the love of G-d, is the way of those who con stantly study and dwell into the depth of the Holy Torah. Just as a person who receives a precious gift whose value he does not yet fully appreciate, realizes that his love for that person will grow ever more when he will fully appreciate the value of the gift, so is it also with our Holy Torah. The deeper we delve into her words, the stronger will we love Him who gave the Torah to us. For the Torah, like no other thing, will bring us ever closer to our Creator, and the closer we are to Him the more will we love Him. The Torah itself tells us that even other nations will realize our closeness to G-d, if they will ever grasp some of the wisdom in herent in its commandments. It tells us in Sefer Devorim:

“You should observe and follow these directives, for this is your wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the nations, that when they hear all these statutes will say, sure ly this nation is a wise and under standing people. For what great nation is there that has G-d so near to them as the Lord our G-d is whenever we call upon Him. And what great nation is there that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law which I set before

you this day” (Devorim 6-8).

In other words, all other nations will respect us only to the extent that we know and observe this Su preme Law. For it is through us, the Jewish People, that G-d put the Torah into this world, a Torah which even non-Jews honor as the basic code of civilization. We who consider, or should consider, this Torah as the source of our life, how grateful should we be to Him, and how much should we love Him for having chosen us to disseminate the words of this Torah among all the people of the world.

I would like to add just one addi tional thought before ending this letter to you. Even before you open the Rambam or the Sefer Hachinuch or any other Sefer pertaining to this subject, let us look at ourselves. We are a piece of flesh and blood. We talk, walk, eat, drink, think, act, etc. Yet we all know that the mo ment a person dies, G-d forbid, his body, remaining intact as before, ceases to function and comes to a complete standstill. This same body which only a moment ago was full of bounce and energy is now at a complete halt. Why, you will ask? Because the Almighty wanted it to come to a complete standstill. Will we not realize, when thinking of all this, how our very life and existence depend every moment on His will. Will we not at the same time become even more grateful to Him, and love Him even more deeply, for enabling us to function and act with that pitifully small thing which we call our body. This was what Iyov had in mind when he said: And from my own flesh do I see my G-d..

I have no doubt that after you will give serious thought to all that was written in this letter, the words which we repeat twice daily, “Love your G-d with all your heart,” will have a completely different meaning to you.

Happy is the man whose wife bestows love and faith on their union; who is to him mother, sister, wife and friend, sharing with him all his burdens and his cares, sus taining their household even in ad versity and hardship with love and peace, with gentleness of demeanour and with fortitude of spirit—such a wife builds for him a home that is at once stable and exalted. But woe is to the man whose wife’s sole con cern is empty finery and pleasureseeking—at times she may rouse and satisfy her husband’s passions, but at times she is but a woman of strife and dissension.

And happy is the woman whose husband honors her more than him self, who looks upon her as upon the very fount of blessing, who sees in her the veritable “mother of all living,” who drinks deep at the river of her pleasures. But woe is to the woman whose husband looks upon himself as master over her, as if her task were only to do his bidding and to gratify his desires. For love which rests on passion only, cannot but cease between them.

It would be impossible to overstress the wisdom of the Rabbis in their insight into human life when they declare: “Happy is the man whose life attests him, whose Torah attests him, and whose manner of livelihood attests him.” Happy is he indeed if his wife can bear true testimony to his personal standards, to his conduct in domestic and fam ily life; if his Torah-knowledge can bear witness to his wisdom; and if his livelihood can declare his in tegrity, his honor, and his upright ness. Such man, partnered by a wife revering such ideals and influencing by example and by precept a rising generation, may be happy indeed in his own life and in the contribution he makes to the score of human happiness.

“If one was writing a Sefer Torah or Tefihlin or a Mezuza and whilst writ ing it he failed to have his mind on the matter and wrote one of the Di vine Names without dedicating it as such, the Sefer Torah, etc. is dis qualified.”

(Rambam, Laws of Sefer Torah 1:15)

It is apparent from these words of the Rambam that the Sefer To rah, Tefihlin or Mezuza is disquali fied only if the proper intention is missing while writing the Divine Names; the remainder of the text does not seem to require this in tention.

But this seems to be contradicted by the Gemara in Gittin (45b) which says that a Sefer Torah writ ten by a non-Jew cannot be used. The reasoning is as follows: Even the tanning of the skins to be used for the parchment of a Sefer Torah must be carried out for that express purpose; one therefore cannot buy parchment manufactured by a nonJew. How much more then must the writing itself be done for the express purpose of a Sefer Torah; one written by a non-Jew must cer tainly be disqualified. The Rambam (ibid., 1: 11) definitely requires the tanning of the skins to be carried out with the express intention of

manufacturing parchment for a Sefer Torah; so it is difficult to under stand why the writing itself should have less stringent requirements.

But the Rambam may hold that there is a difference between the kind of intention required for tan ning and the kind required for writ ing. Writing the words is after all the essence of creating a Sefer To rah; the written text is the Sefer Torah or Mezuza. Even if they are written without conscious intention, therefore, the holiness of the Sefer Torah descends upon them of itself; the normal purpose for which one writes these words is for the crea tion of a Sefer Torah and the ab sence of express intention does not disqualify. Skins are tanned for many purposes, however, and the absence of express intention to tan them for a Sefer Torah is definitely a disqualifying factor.

The reason why a non-Jew’s in tention cannot help us in either case is that since the mitzva does not apply to him, his intention does not possess the power to create the sanc tity of a Sefer Torah. When an ob: servant Jew writes a Sefer Torah there are two requirements: the text must be written as, and for the pur pose of a Sefer Torah; and the Di vine Names must be written as such.

The first of these requirements may be fulfilled without express inten tion, as we explained above; but the purposeful writing of the Divine Names can never be waived. When a non-Jew writes a Sefer Torah, however, his intention is of no avail; and in the absence of express in tention we certainly cannot say, as we do in the case of the observant Jew, “what else can he be writing it for if not for the sanctity of a Sefer Torah?” One cannot talk about “the normal purpose of writing these words,” since the whole situation is an abnormal one.

However, in the Gemara in Gittin that we quoted above, there is an opinion expressed by one of the Tannaim (though not accepted as Halacha) that a Sefer Torah is valid though written by a non-Jew. The reason given is that the Tanna con cerned holds that a Sefer does not need to be written for that purpose. “Intention” is not an essential re quirement for the validity of a Sefer Torah, according to this opinion.

The difficulty with this view is that while there may be disagree ment about the requirement or nonrequirement of intention regarding the text of the Sefer Torah, there is no disagreement regarding the Di (Contittued on page 27)

KEEPING KOSHER CITRIC ACID ON PASSOVER

To continue our policy of taking our homemakers behind the scenes so that they will have a better under standing of what is involved in certifying a product as O.K. Kosher for Pesach or year-round, we are bring ing the following to your attention. It represents ex tensive observation and analysis by outside experts, in addition to intensive personal attention and on-the spot inspection.

The subject is Citric Acid, produced by Miles Labor atories. The question: Is it permissible for Passover? The answer: Yes, it is.

We bring three items of correspondence: a letter from Rabbi Moshe Tendler in which he states that Ray Moshe Feinstein says, unequivocally, that “the product described in the report of Feb. 22 visit is ab solutely acceptable for Passover use, without reserva tion, even by those who follow our custom of pro hibiting bean product derivatives.” Two, is the report of the on-site visit by Dr. Tendler, with his conclusions. Three: a note from the Plant Manager, Elkhart Citric Acid Manufacturing.

Dear Rabbi Levy, shlita: April 27, 1979

Mr. Robert 3. McGrath, president of the citro-tech division of Miles Laboratories Inc., informed me that the report of the on-site inspection of his plant, which I made on Feb. 22, 1979, has been forwarded to you.

I discussed, in the fullest detail, with my father-in-law Ray Moshe Feinstein shlita, the halachic analysis of the data contained in this report. Since CORN meal is the source material (not one of the five chametz grains)

and NO GRAIN PRODUCT or derivative is used in the citric acid production, the sul~sequent digestion (“eekool”); chemical conversion to tasteless and odor less calcium citrate before Pesach; and final regenera tion with a highly toxic and corros~ye acid (H2S04) to give a chemically distinctive, crystalline citric acid (sour salt); obviates any concern for the laws govern ing use of bean products (“kitniyos”) on Pesach. Corn syrup ies a conversion product (hydrolysis) of starch, while citric acid is a metabolite of the fungal organism used by Miles Inc. to produce their citric acid. It is analagous to the production (metabolic conversion) of milk from grain that is consumed and digested by the cow before Pesach.

Ray Feinstein shlita stated, unequivocally, “the product described in the written report of Feb. 22 visit, is absolutely acceptable for Passover use, without re servation, even by those who follow our custom of prohibiting bean product derivatives.”

I trust that this clarification and analysis is helpful to you in evaluating this product.

The fungal organism used to produce citric acid is not absolutely dependent on starch for its raw material. Given other nutritional media based on protein deriva tives it will also produce citric acid albeit by lesser quantitative yield.

THE JEWISH HOMEMAKER

I. THE PROCESS:

A. Starting material—corn (maize) flour

B. Flow chart, with emphasis on steps relevant to Biblical dietary laws.

1. After starch is separated from the gluten component (following liquifaction and saccharification with two enzymes) the pH (acidity) is lowered to approximately 1 .~.

2. The fermentation medium consists of the corn syrup (glucose) with added mineral nutrients.

3. After fermentation the pH is approx. 1.7.

4. The fermentation broth is filtered free of the mycelium, and lime (ca(ah2) is added to precipitate the citric acid dissolved in the broth. This precipitate of calcium citrate is a dry, tasteless, granular material when recovered by filtration and drying.

5. Sulfuric acid is added to the calcium citrate to regenerate the ‘titric acid. The pH at this step is approx. 0.5.

6. The 2 enzymes added (at the liquification saccharification step) are manufactured by fermentation of broth containing no derivative of wheat, barley, oats, or rye. The isolation of these enzymes from the broth is also a “chametz-free” process.

II. ANALYSIS & CONCLUSIONS

A. The starting material is not a grain that is forbidden by biblical law for Passover use. Its prohibition is of a lesser severity, with its origin in rabbinic in junctions designed to protect the integrity of biblical law. As such it is fully binding on all Ashkenazi Jews but with more leniency than biblical chametz.

B. The substance in question enters into the state of “chametz” only on Passover. The citric acid to be sold as Kosher will be manufactured before the Passover (Pesach) holydays.

C. During the process, the mixture becomes “unfit for human consumption” because of the low pH (1.4 at one step and 0.5 at another).

D. The fermentation product upon removal from the fermentor is in the form of a white granular powder essentially tasteless and odorless.

E. The citric acid is not (like corn starch) a component of the original material (corn flour). It is a meta bolic by-product of the impaired metabolism of the mold cells, similar in its relationship to the starting nutrient as cow milk is to the grain con sumed. The citric acid is further removed from the starting material than is the simple hydrolytic pro duct corn syrup or glucose. Many enzymatic steps must occur before the glucose is “digested” to give citric acid.

F. The final product, citric acid, is not designed to be a food substance but only an additive in significant dilution.

Conclusion

In my opinion the citric acid manufactured by Miles Laboratories in Elkhart, Indiana conforms with the Jewish dietary laws as a product acceptable for yearround use including Passover.

REQUIRED WHILE vine Names. Here everyone agrees that if they are not written as such the whole Sefer is disqualified (Git tin 54b). How then can anyone hold that a Sefer Torah written by a non-Jew can be valid? If the Di vine Names are invalid, surely the whole Sefer must be invalid?

To understand this we must con sider the following statement in the Gemara (45b): A Sefer Torah written by a non-believing Jew must be burnt; one written by a non-Jew must be preserved, but not used.

The reason given by the Rambam for the first of these Dinim is as follows: “A Sefer Torah written by a heretical or non-believing Jew is burnt with all the Divine Names it contains because the writer did not believe in the sanctity of the Divine Names and therefore did not write them as such. He imagined that they have no special significance and thus the names he wrote do not possess sanctity.” In the case of the nonJew, however, the names do possess sanctity and that is why the Sefer Torah must be preserved.

How can we understand that the non-Jew has the power to invest the Divine Names with sanctity, while we saw above that he does not possess the power to invest his writ-

ing of the text with the sanctity of a Sefer Torah, according to the Halacha which say that proper in tention is essential to the validity of a Sefer Torah?

It is evident that we must dis tinguish between these two require ments. The requirement of “proper intention” for the writing of the text is something over and above the actual writing of the text itself. One can write these words for vari ous reasons and purposes and the requirement of “intention” is needed to specify that the particular pur pose of my present writing is the creation of a Sefer Torah. This kind of intention is not within the hala chic competence of a non-Jew, as we saw above, since the mitzva of Sefer Torah does not apply to him.

The intention to write a Divine Name as a Divine Name, on the other hand, is not something over and above the actual writing of the Name. “Writing a Divine Name” means in fact, and has no other meaning than, writing it as a Divine Name. This is clear from the Rambarn’s explanation of why the nonbelieving Jew’s Divine Names have no sanctity; it is because “he im agined they have no special signifi cance”. As soon as anyone is aware of the special significance of the

Divine Name while writing it, it thereby becomes a Divine Name, and is invested with that sanctity which precludes our burning or damaging it. In this respect, there fore, the believing Jew and the be lieving non-Jew have equal status; the Divine Names that they write are invested with the special sanc tity of the Divine Name.

It follows therefore that the Tanna who holds that there is no require ment of “intention” for the text of the Sefer Torah, can accept the Se fer Torah written by a non-Jew as perfectly valid. True, the non-Jew has no competence to create “inten tion” of this sort; but this is not an essential requirement according to this view. The intention required for the Divine Names, however, is an essential requirement; but this kind of intention is within the compe tence of a non-Jew too.

It follows, also, that even accord ing to the accepted Halacha, which makes “intention” as regards the text an essential requirement, and therefore disqualifies the Sefer To rah written by a non-Jew, this Sefer Torah may still not be burnt, as is the one written by the non-believing Jew. The Sefer Torah may be in valid, but the Divine Names it con tains retain their sanctity.
