We are crew, not passengers

Derived from the Expedition Learning (EL) Education model, the Crew framework is crucial for the development of good people with particular emphasis upon character. Crew is both a culture and a structure. As a culture, Crew is focused upon relationship building, academic and character development, and service.

The Crew program focuses upon the four pillars, as illustrated in the infographic to develop each associated element.

The construct of Crew is essential to the development of character at Korowa. The motto, ‘We are crew, not passengers’ means teachers and students work alongside one another to include the diversity of individuals. Trust is developed through Crew sessions that focus specifically on students learning how to work and support others. Students and teachers are strengthened by acts of consequential service to others. Being a Crew member means that students learn to rely and support one another not just socially, but academically and ethically.

The Crew Framework is delivered throughout the School via three stages. Circle is delivered in Junior School Prep-Year 6. The Cripps Years 7 and 8 are referred to as Community. Crew is delivered in Years 9 and 10 and through the Time Zero program at Years 11 and 12.

Each Circle, Community and Crew session follows a particular structure in which students come together with their Crew leader several times a week to develop connections, build habits of character and to discuss important ideas and events that matter to us. Crew plays an important role for students to reflect upon and set goals related to their learning growth and skills. All students have an equal voice and can be heard.

An awareness of society is developed and students act through service initiatives which allow them to determine how they can both positively influence others while actively contributing to society.
