Throughout the Kootenay Rockies region are glimpses of the past. Exploring the rich history of this area – turn-of-the-century silver-mining ghost towns, the railway museums, the wild west heritage towns – puts it all into perspective. It makes your vacation come alive as you immerse yourself into what life was like for a pioneer, a railroader or a miner living the dream during the silver boom. Regardless of where the road takes you – to a restored sternwheeler, an island park or a fascinating train museum filled with priceless antiques from the railroading glory days – exploring the diverse history is bound to be a highlight of your trip.

Music and mountains go hand-in-hand. But the mountains inspire art of all genres. So, not surprisingly, the region is a mecca for painters & potters, welders & weavers, and just about every type of artisan you could imagine. The arts scene is vibrant – eclectic art galleries and one-of-a-kind studios and shops are yours to discover. Interested in Indigenous art and culture? For thousands of years, before the Europeans arrived, the First Peoples of this land prospered here. Their rich Indigenous history is thriving and showcased at interpretive centres and galleries dedicated to local First Nations.

This part of British Columbia is renowned for its orchards, which offer an abundance of fruits, berries and fresh vegetables. And spread throughout is a growing network of craft breweries, distilleries, cideries and a handful of quaint wineries in Creston and Trail. The good news is that you are never far from a wonderful little spot where locallyproduced beverages are happily made and served. Whatever quenches your thirst – a hoppy Pacific Northwest IPA, a savoury raspberry-infused vodka, a classic apple crisp dry cider or a golden glass of Gerwurtztraminer – you’ll find it here.

If you want dramatic mountain golf, this is your destination. The many spectacular courses are all about mountain views, elevation changes, rugged topography and beautiful golf holes that wind alongside stunning rivers and lakes. While the region boasts a number of destination golf resorts, there are many little known gems that also cling to mountains and cut through forests near scenic towns … and they are just as rewarding to play. The Kootenay Rockies is one region where leaving your clubs at home just isn’t an option.
