Welcome to Johnson’s Landing Retreat Center Dedicated to the Development of Body, Mind and Spirit.

Welcome to Johnson’s Landing Retreat Center. We are nested in the heart of the Kootenay Mountains overlooking its magnificent lake. Our Retreat Center provides a beautiful and relaxing environment to take a workshop or personal retreat. We provide delicious vegetarian cuisine, comfortable lodgings, sacred meditation spaces and a labyrinth with an inspiring mountain view.

We have been offering quality learning experiences for over fifteen years. Each year our offerings are both inspiring and diverse. Our wonderful selection of dynamic instructors lead workshops and retreats inspire us and challenge us to grow. Whether it is to immerse yourself in a transformational course, or take a well-deserved vacation get-away, this is an amazing place to be.

We are Kootenay Mountain Grown Certified by the Local Agricultural Society, which recognizes our commitment to growing our food organically. We received the Green Star Award from Live Smart BC, a provincial government program because of our alternative energy initiatives, recycling, reusing and sustainable land use methods.

From the deck of the Main Lodge we have a magnificent view of the Selkirk Mountain range. We back onto the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park with the famous Fry Creek Canyon hiking trail starting minutes from our door. We are located 1 hour north of Kaslo, 2 hours north of Nelson, and 4 hours south of Revelstoke.

Get a basic understanding of how to plan a solar electric system for your grid-tied or off-grid home to be Net Zero Energy. Will cover solar hot air, solar hot water, wind, micro-hydro energy generation, Bio-Diesel, and battery electric transportation. Time permitting we will set up a solar Photo Voltaic array.

Dale Rowe has had a passion for renewable energy concepts for over twenty years. He converted a diesel vehicle to run on waste vegetable oils, and designed and fabricated a waste oil heating system for his family home. Three years ago he started a company in Edmonton called That Solar Place which supplies, designs, and installs solar installations. He is always keeping up with the latest innovations.

May 30 to June 1• Reiki

Gathering • $80 plus dana or donation to the teacher.

If you have already learned Reiki you are invited to join. Whether it was recent or many years ago, this weekend will immerse you in the healing energy of sharing treatments and stories. Coming together to share with other masters and students, renews and refreshes our dedication.

Iris Youngberg My introduction to Reiki was in a class of 23 students. I was so bathed in the beauty, so changed by the energy with that first attunement that I floated for a week. I knew I wanted to teach people this wonderful energy healing technique, but it wasn’t easy and certainly was not learned overnight. For three and a half years I apprenticed with my teacher and in 1994 I received my Master/Teacher Certificate and constantly feel the awe in every class.

June 6 to 8 • Self-Hypnosis & Emotional Freedom Technique • $195 An experiential workshop with opportunities to experience guided relaxation with anchoring, hypnosis, Emotional Freedom Technique and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. We will experience various hypnotic phenomena and address specific issues while developing the skills to practice it in future use. This course is flexible so we can customize your experience: targeting issues around smoking and/or weight-loss, sleep, past life regression, stress and anxiety.

Curtis Steven is a counselling therapist with over 20 years’ experience working with children and families. He has a Master’s Degree in counselling and is a Certified member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. His primary interest in counselling is in helping people cope with issues around anxiety, stress, fears and phobias.

June 21 to July 6 • Permaculture

Design $1190 includes meals & camping

Includes site analysis and design, patterns and landscape reading, micro-climates, water catchment, storage and distribution, wind blocks, tree ecology, organic and bio-intensive gardening, seed saving, plant propagation, medicinal herbs, soil rehabilitation, orchard and forest garden design, and more.

Sarah Orlowski co-owns a certified organic permaculture orchard in Grand Forks. Along with holding a Permaculture Design Certificate, she is a Master Herbalist and Qi Gong practitioner.

An experienced teacher, Sarah has instructed for Douglas and Capilano College, Van Dusen Gardens, the Canadian College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Healing.

June 28 to July 1 ~or~ June 28 to July 3 • Creative Mandalas

3 days $195 • 5 days $295 Using this variety of materials, students will explore their creativity and find their own unique expression while examining the tradition of Mandalas and using a variety of acrylic painting materials which can be mixed to create a number of unconventional and interesting effects.

Ted Wallace received his B.Ed in Art at the U. of Calgary in the seventies, and spends time in Mexico yearly. This experience, which was intended to continue his art education also started a life-long spiritual quest. Once the creative dam burst he became obsessed with his passion for creating art which has continued for over 22 years.

July 4 - 6 ~or~ July 4-11 • Ayurveda - Blissful Path to a Healthy Life

2 days $195 • 7 days $570 Learn the fundamentals of this ancient healing system and live a lifestyle most suitable for your constitution. Learn to prevent disease by using seasonal/daily routines to preserve health using tonics and food combining, spices and gentle purification methods. The retreat will be complemented with daily practices of hatha yoga and meditation to give you a full immersion into a healing and restorative lifestyle.

Zora Doval is the author of two books on Ayurveda, a tantric yogini, teacher of meditation and yoga. She studied with Dr. Lad and holds a diploma for Ayurvedic Studies from his Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She studied Ayurvedic bodywork and cleansing therapies known as pancha karma with Dr. Sujata Kekada in Bali. She has a real passion for Ayurveda, Yoga and Tantra, the three sister sciences for greater health, happiness and inner freedom.

July 12 to 17• Imago Couples Therapy & Holotropic Breathwork • $585 Couples Therapy is based on the work of Dr. Harville Hendrix and is an experience in understanding self and partner, combined with tools that restore the energetic connection, and passion present in the early days of romance, which all too often sours into conflict, distance and pain. We combine Holotropic Breathwork, based on the work of Dr. Stan Grof, with this healing technique that access's altered states using evocative music and breathing.

Mark Cornfield is a psychiatrist in private practice. His special interests include psychotherapy, ego state psychology, PTSD and dissociative disorders.

Susan McBride has a Masters in counselling and her work centers around facilitating troubled couples using Imago Relationship Therapy. She offers Holotropic Breathwork and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programs.

July 26 to 31 • Restorative Yoga Retreat • $470 These experiential, practise-based retreats are designed to help you re-connect with your deep self. Expand your yoga and other mindfulness-based practises, and experience deep rest, rejuvenation, release and freedom!

August 8 to 10 •

Tantric Intimacy • $195

Tantra includes all aspects of earthly life, including sexuality and relationships, and can be a path to awakening. Learn practical tools to deepen and enliven any relationship with the cultivation of love and surrender.

Virginia Preston is a yoga, meditation and tantra teacher, and a Registered Professional Counsellor. She is versed in the mental-emotional clearing practises of Byron Katie and the Sedona Method. She has studied yoga in Canada and internationally, and shares the tantric practises of Agama Yoga, Osho and David Deida.

August 8 to 10 • Coping with Grief & Loss, Growing & Transforming • $185 We will begin with a focus on self-care before introducing the myths associated with bereavement and grief experiences. A variety of coping strategies will be offered. The transformative nature of grief will be woven with a focus on the process of meaning, making and continuing connections.

Deb Bennett is an Associate Professor at Mount Royal University in Calgary. Deb assists community agencies by developing and facilitating workshops on loss and grief for professionals and volunteers. As a social worker for over 18 years, Deb worked in a variety of settings including Hospice, Hospital, Police, Mental Health Services, and Family Support Services.

August 13 • Seed

Saving • $70 one day

The morning will be spent reviewing the principles of seed saving and the afternoon will be a hands-on experience of cleaning them across the road in Patrick Steiner’s field, owner of Stellar Seeds. Participants will take seeds home and leave with the knowledge to grow them as well.

Patrick Steiner is a local farmer and seed grower. He and his wife Colleen operate Stellar Seeds, an organic seed company specializing in heirloom, rare and locally adapted seeds.

August 16 to 22 • Kootenay Lake Qi Gong/Tai Chi Summer Camp $635 • includes camping and meals Tai Chi is the art of flowing body movements to improve your energy levels and bring the body into harmony while calming the mind. Intermediate and Advanced students will have formimprovement sessions that are not style-dependent. Option include Fan Forms, Weapons and Push Hands. Qi Gong starts the day and in the evenings, we wrap-it-up it softly with massage.

Bryan Knack began studying martial arts in the mid-70s, he then turned his studies to TAI CHI and QI GONG. He was inducted into the USA Marshal Arts Hall of Fame 2007 as Chinese Martial Art Master of the year. Sifu Knack offers study in Tai Chi Yang Style, Tai Chi Chen Style, Qi Gong, Bagua, Push Hands, Weapons.

Hajime Harold Naka is an Urban Daoist rebel with a cause... and effect. He has been studying, practicing and teaching QiGong - Tai Chi - Daoist philosophy and meditation for over thirty years.

He will be joined by Bryan Knack and Kevin Wallbridge, two long-term qualified instructors.

Kevin Wallbridge has lived and studied in China and is a cofounder of the prestigious Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences School of Chinese Medicine in Nelson BC. He is a medical anthropologist who is trained as an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist. He is a gold medal winning competitor at National and Provincial tournaments and a silver medal winner at the international level (all for Taijiquan and Baguazhang). His training started in 1985 and includes several renowned teachers including the late Grandmaster Xu Gongwei.

August 24-30 • Mindfulness Meditation & Buddhist Philosophy $100 plus dana or donation to the teacher.

The Buddha taught that you can start where you are and develop your mind and heart and happiness. This silent retreat will consist of meditation instruction, dharma talks and discussions, guided meditations, silent sittings, loving kindness, walking meditation and other movement.

There will be opportunities for personal interviews and guidance for your inner work.

Brian Ruhe has been teaching for 16 years in the Vancouver area. He was a monk in Thailand and is the author of two books and a guided meditation CD. He trained in the Theravada Forest tradition and has taught thousands of people at colleges and adult education courses. Brian’s latest book is A Short Walk On An Ancient Path – A Buddhist Exploration of Meditation, Karma and Rebirth.

September 6-12 • Intuitive

Painting • $325

Students will be given techniques and opportunity to go deep into the well of their creativity.

For beginners this is an opportunity to start a relationship with painting by experiencing the joy and energy of creating it. For the experienced artist it is a chance to break out of patterns and refresh the heart and soul of their artistic process. We will cover techniques for building a painting.

September 12 - 15 • $275

Heart of the Matter Family Constellation & Breathwork Both are powerful, deep methods for releasing trauma, stress and entanglements from our physical, mental, and emotional bodies. Reconnecting us to the loving support of our ancestors, to our life force energy, and to our own knowingness and personal power. We address a variety of issues including addictions, relationship issues, depression, illnesses and adoption issues.

Blanche Tanner has been a Master Breath Practitioner and involved with personal growth and spiritual awareness for over 30 years. She teaches Family and Human Systems Constellation Facilitation, instructs at Women’s Retreat and hosts monthly breath work afternoons.

September 26-28 • Know Your

Mushrooms • $195

Starts with a slide show covering basic mushroom biology and ecology while introducing the local species through his beautiful photos. Learn helpful hints on identifying and finding mushrooms which follows as we visit different habitats to collect as many mushrooms as we can. Then a mushroom cook-out where participants learn basic cooking techniques and get to sample the unique flavours of these earthly delights.

Tyson Ehlers is an ecologist from the Slocan Valley, who specializes in wild mushrooms. His numerous research projects and scientific articles contribute to a better understanding and management of mushrooms in BC. He strives to foster the important connection between people and the forest, delivering workshops and guiding mushroom forays for over 10 years with people of all ages.

October 4 to 10 • Timber

Framing • $495 includes meals and camping

Michael starts with an overview of natural building, timber framing and ecological forestry. He will lead us through a project overview, explaining the design drawings. There will be a layout overview so you can learn how each joint is laid out on the timbers for cutting. Different types of joints will be explained during this hands-on building project using hand and power tools.

Michael Hollihn studied food security and top-soil erosion, enjoyed Eastern Philosophy and Existentialist Thinkers at UVIC, then continued with Selection Logging and Eco-system Mapping at the Ecoforestry Institute, and Timber Frame Production at the College of the Rockies. Now he instructs at the Blue Quills First Nations college. He has been practising Yoga, Qi Gong and Vipassana meditation for 19 years. He owns and operates Prana Timber Frames and Food and Shelter Farm in Midway.

Invest in Yourself to help Change the World

Mid-Week Rest & Renewal Program 4 days and 3 nights (Monday - Thursday)

This is your chance to pamper yourself with a small holiday before or after a workshop starts. Melt away your stress with a sauna and bodywork session. Meditate in our Sacred Space Sanctuary or in our serene outdoor forested areas.

Take advantage of the group room for some stretching, Yoga, Tai Chi or dance. Curl up in a comfortable chair with one of the wide selection of books from our library. Be adventurous and hike to Fry Creek Canyon or up Kootenay Joe Mountain behind the Center.

A 35-minute walk or 10-minute drive will bring you to a beach on the shores of Kootenay Lake. Delicious vegetarian cuisine at every meal strengthens the body so you can return home stronger.

BODY WORK SESSIONS available upon request.

Fee: $ 350 • Includes meals and shared accommodations for 3 nights (Private rooms are available for an additional fee). Also includes one bodywork session.

Center Life Program This seven day program is designed as an immersion experience into Retreat Center life. Four hours per day, for five days will be spent working in various aspects of the Center; the garden, the kitchen, or building/maintenance.

You may get a variety of experiences depending on what our needs are at the time, but if you have a preference please let us know. Your two free days can be spent communing with nature, hiking, swimming in the lake or reading some of the many books in our vast library.

Please come with a willingness to participate and learn. This program runs from May through November, but other times can be arranged. Your Center Life experience can start on whatever day you like and is a good first step towards a full-time work exchange. As a follow up to Center Life you could take Healthy Habits Cooking, Living on the Earth (our Life Skills course) and continue onwards to community development.

Your investment is $310. Includes meals and cozy accommodations.

Aspects of the Retreat Center Gardening Deva

Want to learn more about gardening, or use your already honed gardening skills to assist us in our lovely gardens? Our farm has been designated as Kootenay Mountain Grown, which means that we garden using organic methods. We grow fruit, herbs and vegetables to supply the Retreat Center kitchens. We require lots of willing hands to plant, weed, water and harvest the gifts from our gardens.

Kitchen or Housekeeping Angel

Nothing like on-the-job training, helping staff to prepare meals or make the place ready for guests. This experience helps make the transition to a healthier lifestyle easier. Time could be spent on picking and preparing fresh garden produce and serving it. You just might learn to make granola, our better butter or salad dressing. We stock the shelves, sweep the floors, and wash the pots and pans.

Building and Grounds Maintenance

We always need energetic people to help with hauling wood, raking leaves, pruning trees, sorting lumber, as well as a myriad of other tasks to keep the Center running. Every project requires various skills. If you have some time to share we would appreciate your assistance.

Volunteer Program If you wish to spend, some extended time at the Retreat Center assisting in a variety of activities which include maintenance, housekeeping, food service and gardening we would like to hear from you. In exchange for your volunteer time we will provide your meals, accommodations and maybe you can attend evening lectures and/or yoga classes.

Community Development One of our aspirations is to develop community around and in support of the Retreat Center. We are looking for people interested in building a lifestyle that is in service to the planet. Your investment would be in energy (money is not required). If you think you may be interested we ask that you come for our Center Life Program (see above) then stay on as a volunteer. This is the process that leads to full community membership.

October 18 • $90 Learn to build a simple cost-effective lettuce hydroponic system using only basic tools in this one day course. Eliminate the need for soil, reduce your water and nutrient consumption while increasing your yields. Grow healthier plants (cool and warm season veggies) without the need of pesticides and herbicides. Learn to build your own system that will hold 133 plants in a 12’ x 4’ area.

LiVING ON THE EARTH A Life Skills Course

June 13 to 20 • $595 A Life Skills Course with Johnson’s Landing Retreat Centre Staff – Time will be spent working with our gardener learning to grow food and then preparing wholesome vegetarian dishes. You will also have the opporuntiy to work with some of the builders to learn construction skills. We have many selfsustainable living skills to share so if you want to learn specfic ones, please ask.

Fee includes vegetarian meals, instruction and camping for seven days!

Facilities The Lodge contains the dining facilities, a lounge/common space for meeting, as well as a library area for quiet relaxation. It has a sauna and other amenities on a large deck that overlooks majestic Kootenay Lake.

The Center’s meeting room holds up to fifty people and has a deck that doubles as an outdoor classroom with a breathtaking view. We also have a meditation sanctuary, a bunk house, tent cabins, regular cabins, campground, guest tree houses and tipis. There is also a 42-foot Labyrinth for meditative walking.

• Most programs are adult-oriented.

The Center does not have playgrounds or child care facilities.

• It is not easily wheelchair accessible.

• Smoking and/or the use of drugs or alcohol are not permitted at the Center.

• The Retreat Center is a wildlife sanctuary. Please do not bring pets.

• There is a pay telephone at the Retreat Center with a data jack for internet access.

• Cell phones do not work at the Center.

Gas: There is a gas station in Kaslo that is usually open late. There is another gas station/corner store in Cooper Creek, just past the Hwy. 31 turn-off, before you turn towards Johnson’s Landing.

What to Bring: flashlight and extra batteries, hiking footwear, beach towel & bathing suit, notebook/ journal, water bottle and slippers or indoor footwear suitable for hardwood floors (outdoor footwear is not worn inside the buildings). The weather varies a lot here, so bring clothing for all possibilities. Please note that there are no stores or restaurants in Johnson’s Landing.

Booking a Workshop/ Retreat Please register early to ensure a place in both your chosen workshop and the accommodations of your choice.

• Plan to arrive between 2 and 6 pm the day of the workshop. Most programs start after dinner which is usually served around 6 pm. Most programs finish after lunch on the last day of your workshop or retreat.

The balance for accommodations with meals and taxes is due upon arrival by cash or credit card. Debit cards and personal cheques are not accepted at the Center.

Cancellation: If you need to cancel, give us at least two weeks’ notice and we will refund your deposit minus a $30 processing fee. Or we will credit your deposit towards another workshop/retreat during the same calendar year.

If a workshop is cancelled, we try to give two weeks’ notice and a FULL refund, or you may come for a visit with a 25% discount on a custom vacation package.

Day Use Fee: Guests attending a seminar and not staying on site will be charged a day use fee of $15 per day to cover facility usage and other amenities.

All prices are in Canadian dollars.

In order to maintain our reasonable rates, we encourage guests to pitch in and help in any way they feel comfortable.

PLEASE NOTE: Although we try to bring the workshops as advertised, circumstances may happen that are beyond our control.

We do not accept liability for cancelled workshops or changes resulting from weather, maintenance work, unavailability of staff, acts of God, government or any other authorities.

We do not accept liability for any loss of, or damage to, personal property of our guests.

We reserve the right to refuse admission to a guest if his or her participation in the workshop is deemed inappropriate.

Our programs are educational experiences and are not to be mistaken for medical or psychological counselling or treatment.

(Not offered as part of a workshop/program) We have one cabin which can be used for seclusion retreats of a week or more, includes meals.

Culinary Delights We lovingly serve delicious vegetarian gourmet meals using our own organic garden vegetables and herbs when possible. We buy organic grains, dried fruits, seeds, nuts and locally made sourdough breads. We grind our own flour to make scrumptious-tasting baked goodies with cold-pressed oil and free-range eggs.

Wheat-free and special diets are available upon request.

Directions from Kaslo to the Retreat Center Take Hwy. 31 North, past Lardeau, which is the sharp bend in the road.

Turn right when you see this sign.

Go over bridge, the road will turn to gravel.

At the next intersection turn right. It’s approx. thirty minutes from here.

Drive past the Argenta turnoff, and soon the lake will be on your right. After 8 km you will see a Johnson’s Landing sign. You have 4 km to go.

Drive straight past the mail boxes that are on your left hand side.

Continue on past Gar Creek where a slide took out many trees.

At a ‘Y’ in the road take the uphill (left) road towards the Fry Creek Canyon Trail.

Pass the Community Centre and the bulletin board.

Go past the Fry Creek Trail Head.

Take the SECOND right where the sign says...Kootenay Joe Road.

The entrance to the Center is at the top of hill on the left.

Ground Transportation For one price our minivan can transport up to five people.

To the Retreat Center: from Castlegar - $120 from Nelson - $100 from Kaslo - $50 To assure minivan availability, please book well in advance of your arrival. Toll-Free 1-877-366-4402 Car rentals are available in Castlegar and Nelson.

Small Planes For added adventure small plane service is available from Nelson to the Kaslo airstrip. Three people can fly for a very reasonable price.
