A monument of culture, a mainstay of art, a house of artists and a town of kings. Beautiful, even magical Cracow have been attracting and enchanting tourists for ages. It is a city which stands on the podium of every ranking for the most beautiful city in Poland. Its long and complicated history has made it a city full of historic sites but still we can find modern attractions and places where one can spend time in an active way.
Majestic Krak and Wanda Mound are witnesses of the beginning of Cracow and museums display relics from
the Palaeolithic. Visiting the Wawel, we will discover the history of the Piasts who ruled and the Jagiellonians who took care of the development of the town and its art. Entering the streets of the Old Town, we will explore the history of their former citizens, merchants and artists. In Kazimierz we will get to know Jews of Cracow and the banks of the Vistula will serve as a great meeting spot. The magic of Cracow can be felt in every district, street and at every square.
Swoszowice is famous for sulphide baths but sulphide water cannot be used in crenotherapy. However, it does not mean that we may not drink mineral water in Cracow. In Mateczny Estate, by one of the busiests roundabouts of Cracow, Antoni Mateczny Roundabout, there is an oasis of tranquillity – Mateczny Spa Complex (the Spa Park and spa buildings). There is a modern mineral water pump
room located in a beautiful, Art Nouveau building which is surrounded by the green Spa Park. The place dates back to 1898. There, one can try healthy, unique mineral sulphate-chloride-sodium-magnesium-calcium mineral water which comes from the local ‘Mateczny Spring’ (highly mineralised) and ‘Anton’ (moderately mineralised).
Antoni Mateczny discovered the water on his land in 1898. Soon afterwards, the bath centre, the Spa Park and other spa facilities were created. Unfortunately, during the Nazi invasion, the German occupied these buildings and in the years 1945-1946 the Red Army was stationed there – they destroyed the spa equipment and the Park. After the war, the family of Mateczny regained the spa for a while but when the owners were forced to leave it in
1952, it was taken over by the State Treasury and later by the management of National Spas in Swoszowice-Zdrój. A few years later, Mateczny functioned again and in 1970 Krakowianka bottling plant was put into service in the area of the Park. The heirs managed to get back the spa after several dozen years and in 2003 they sold it to IPR company. Today we can walk around the beautiful Spa Park and drink water from Cracow Spa Pump Room.
Cracow Spa Pump Room is also a place of meetings and cultural events. The owners refer to the years of splendour of the place, to the time when it was frequented by health visitors, people who lived in Podgórze and Cracow which at the time neighboured with it. Members of Young
Poland bohemia dropped in as well in order to refresh themselves with healthy water sipped from a jug and spend time with others. Art Nouveau interiors encourage the organisation of social gatherings.
Organised groups can take a trip around the Pump Room. During such a trip they will familiarise themselves with the history and architecture of the place, gain information on the water, visit the whole Podgórze and eat a delicious meal.
If you like the mineral water of Cracow, you can take it with you. The water is bottled in specially prepared, glazed rooms so that the whole process is visible.
